OHS Fine Arts Centre to bear name of longtime directors

By ERIKA WURST news@kendallcountynow.com Oswego High School theater alums opened their pocketbooks for a good cause last week and raised more than $5,000 in a matter of days for a cause near and dear to their hearts.

The funds will go to purchase signs, commemorative plaques and shadow boxes for the high school’s performing arts center when it’s renamed this week after the program’s longtime and now-retired directors. The space will be known as the Dave and Donna Barnes Performing Arts Center.

Dave and Donna Barnes spent 33 years directing 99 plays with Oswego High School students until they retired in 2008. During those years, they created a network of alumni who have gone on to act on stage and screen, direct, and work in set production in their adult lives.

“My life would not be what it is today, had it not been for Dave and Donna,” former theater student Amanda Drinkall wrote of her mentors when donating to the GoFundMe campaign. “Their continued support of my acting career has meant the world to me. Love Love Love!”

Drinkall was one of nearly 80 people who donated to an online campaign and talked about her affection for the couple. Supporters lamented that the auditorium dedication was a long time coming.

“When the auditorium was first built in 1990, one of our oldest alums had his daughter write a letter asking that they name it after us,” Dave recalled. “We were given a copy of the letter and just laughed. We thought, ‘That’s nice, but it’s not going to happen.’”

And it didn’t – for another 28 years, anyhow.

Name or no name, Dave and Donna (who married in 1980) went on to run a hugely successful program inside that auditorium. One of their last performances was a musical with a cast of nearly 200 students. It was a far cry from the program’s infancy in the 1970s, when the casts were small and the stage was the dingy floor of the school’s small gym.

“We worked in the wrestling room for the first five years,” Donna explained, recalling days long past. As they built their cast and the program’s name, their practice spaces upgraded – from wresting room, to small gym, to large gym, and eventually their own auditorium.

passed and watch the space be built.

“It gives me an appreciation for what it took to put on shows before then,” Tucker said. “Dave and Donna literally built shows from the ground up in those days, and made it look easy. No two people have ever managed so much with so little, and no two people are more deserving of such an honor.”

For 18 years, Dave and Donna spent hundreds of hours among the lights and seats and stages of the auditorium, directing passionate students and growing a family. Former students recalled the theater as a place where they felt belonged and a place they were proud to be a part of.

Dave Barnes said he made it his mission to ensure they felt exactly that way.

“First and foremost, we realized that in order for us to subsist as a group, we had to have each other’s back,” he said about building the program. “I tell the kids, let’s care about each other and who we are as a group, because if we don’t, no one else will. As long as you do that, this group will follow you anywhere.”

Dave and Donna still frequent the shows of their former students, and they still attend the school’s musicals and plays. Because of this, their alumni group is vast and strong.

“The name on the building will be our name, but it’s really the OHS theater family name,” Donna Barnes said.

“It couldn’t have happened without thousands of other people who were involved. We had the keys [to the auditorium] and we turned on the lights. But the students made it all happen.”

Board members cite anticipated cost savings

“That is just too large [of a savings] for us to ignore,” Marecek said.

Board members, however, also expressed some hesitancy to go with a new service provider.

“We know Republic has done a great job and it is a little nerve-racking, but I’ve looked at the numbers and the services provided and I think it is a fantastic opportunity for us,” said board member Theresa Sperling.

Board member Denny Lee said Republic has “done a great job” in the village, but when their proposal is compared with DC Trash’s proposal, “it’s not even close.”

Village President Matt Brolley agreed that the DC Trash proposal is “definitely more cost-effective” but also noted that the firm is a “younger, newer company” with fewer clients. A DC official told the board that the firm currently has four other municipal contracts and will add Sugar Grove on Aug. 1 – the same day they would begin service in Montgomery.

Brolley said he is “definitely uneasy” about changing contractors based on Republic’s work in the village over the past several years. He noted that in finalizing a contract with DC Trash there will be “no option to turn back” for the village on its solid waste collection service.

Board member Pete Heinz was the lone board member to speak in favor of retaining Republic.

“We’ve never had any trouble with Republic,” Heinz said, adding, “Don’t fix it if it isn’t broken.”

D-308 gets partial state payment, wants full funding

By MARTHA QUETSCH news@kendallcountynow.com Community Unit School District 308 finally received a categorical funding payment this week, but it was just a small part of what the state owes the district.

The $450,000 payment was 15 percent of the first categorical payment of $3.5 million due to the district last September, said John Sparlin, district superintendent.

The payment is the only categorical funding the district has received for the fiscal year, which ends June 30. If the district does not receive additional payments as of that time, the state will owe it $14.75 million.

The state is required to remit categorical funding to public school districts quarterly during the fiscal year.

“It shouldn’t fall on us to push back this way.”

Jared Ploger School District 308 Board of Education member But because of its budget impasse, the state is significantly behind in those payments.

“As of today, we should have received three (of four) categorical payments totaling $11 million,” Sparlin said following the April 24 School Board meeting.

The partial payment came after the district sent a letter to Illinois State Comptroller Susana Mendoza two

state even further to meet its full financial obligations. Toward that goal, they signed on to the Pass Illinois Budget! Initiative on April 24. Nearly 400 Illinois school districts have joined the grassroots initiative, which calls on the governor and state lawmakers to immediately end the state budget impasse, fix the education funding formula and invest in students at schools throughout the state including higher education, and pay school districts what they are owed this year.

“Until we have received all the money we are owed, we will not be satisfied,” Sparlin said.

During Monday’s meeting, board member Jared Ploger thanked Sparlin for his efforts in trying to obtain the categorical funding, but added, “It shouldn’t fall on us to push back this way.”

weeks ago. In the letter, Sparlin asked that the state “disburse all mandated categorical funds for FY 2017 currently owed to District 308” and stated that “these funds are key for the maintenance of our balanced budget, as required by law.”

Forty percent of the revenue the district includes in its annual budget is from the state, both in general aid and in the quarterly categorical payments.

The district last fall established a balanced budget of $191 million, with the expectation of full state funding.

In June 2016, Illinois policy makers announced that the state would “fully fund” K-12 education. Sparlin noted in the letter to the comptroller that the state has narrowly applied “fully fund” only to include general state aid, not mandated categorical payments.

Montgomery residents should start paying slightly less for their weekly trash and recycling pickup service beginning this summer. In addition, residents should expect to see a new firm providing the service.

A majority of village board members voiced support Monday evening for finalizing a contract with DC Trash of Cortland to provide trash and recycling collection service in the village effective Aug. 1.

The board is expected to approve the final contract later this spring.

DC Trash will succeed Republic Services as the village’s solid waste hauler. Republic’s current five-year contract with the village expires July 31.

Republic submitted a new contract proposal, but board members opted to hire DC Trash to provide the service

based on the lower anticipated cost to the village and to residents.

Currently, village residents pay $19.65 per month for the service from Republic, but under the proposed new contract with DC Trash that monthly cost will drop to $16.47 for the first year and then increase annually by 3 percent over the seven-year life of the contract.

Republic Services’ contract proposal called for an initial monthly charge to residents of $17.25 for the first year with annual increases of 3.25 percent over the life of the contract.

Under the proposed DC Trash contract, residents will be provided with refuse and recycling bins. Residents will have their choice of 35-, 65- or 95-gallon bins. In addition, residents will not be required to purchase and place stickers on refuse and yard waste.

Also, residents will be allowed to place out one large item per week for pickup at no additional charge.

Oberweis’ bill imperils public’s right to know Dissemination of information to residents through publication of public notices protects the public’s right to know.

Through public notices, units of government inform the public about what they are doing or proposing, which, in turn, helps the public effectively engage in the democratic process. The cost for public notices is minimal to each unit of government, usually less than one-tenth of a percent of the budget.

Legislation that took effect five years ago goes further. The Illinois Legislature unanimously approved a bill requiring newspapers to post all public notices they print on a public, free-access centralized website at no additional cost to government. That website is PublicNoticeIllinois.com.

The system works well. Newspapers disseminate public notices and then certify that governments have complied with public notice laws. The

public is served efficiently, in print and online.

However, some people want to change it.

Senate Bill 2032 would allow units of government to bypass publishing notices in local newspapers and, instead, post public notices on their own websites or on a state-run website.

State Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, introduced the bill in February; a Senate committee is reviewing it.

Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti is a strong supporter; a task force she headed issued a report in December 2015 that favors the concept of “modernizing public notices.”

Frankly, we are appalled by their cavalier attitude toward public notices and government transparency.

As a respected, independent third party, newspapers reliably transmit this information in print and online.

Newspapers for centuries have played a key role in the legal process of public

notices by publishing, certifying and archiving them. It’s a long-proven process.

By contrast, government is unreliable.

The Citizens Advocacy Center reviewed Illinois local governments’ track records for posting notices online in three basic areas – public meeting notices, public meeting agendas and approved minutes from public meetings – as required by law through the Open Meetings Act. Of more than 750 websites surveyed, only 73 percent of governments complied with posting meeting notices, 57 percent complied with posting an agenda, and a mere 48 percent complied with posting approved meeting minutes.

That’s unacceptable.

What can the public expect if local governments bypass newspapers and post public notices online?

The same dismal record of noncom-

pliance and lawbreaking.

That would be a terrible blow to transparency.

We are unconvinced that public notices, if placed only on government-controlled websites, would have anything close to the same readership they have now.

Senate Bill 2032 is a radical departure from the proven public notice system that all other states use.

Government inevitably would become less transparent, especially for people who aren’t online.

And the public’s right to know, rather than being protected, would be diminished.

Politicians such as Oberweis and Sanguinetti ought to know better. They should realize that public notices in Illinois were “modernized” more than five years ago through legislation establishing the centralized website.

The bill should be defeated.

Farming on the ‘Prairie Peninsula’ took a while to get going With the official arrival of spring late last month, a young man’s fancy naturally turned towards spring plowing.

Preparing fields for planting has been going on here in the Fox Valley for thousands of years. During the past 60 years, the preparation has been done entirely by machine. Before that, lots of horseflesh provided the power, and before that, human hands wielding hoes and mattocks did the trick.

The good thing today is that we have the technology available to feed the world on increasingly less farmland. Plowshares these days, for instance, come in large groups pulled by machines that 50 years ago would have been called construction equipment. Although the goal is to prepare agricultural land for planting, the interesting thing is that fewer farmers are actually plowing their fields every year, and that is good news for all of us. More on that later.

First, though, we ought to talk about the plow – the tool that really revolutionized agriculture here and around the rest of the world.

Agricultural practices evolved just like everything else, a little at a time, although they sometimes took a quantum leap ahead, mimicking Stephen Jay Gould’s “punctuated equilibrium”

Thousands of years ago, agriculture arose in the “Fertile Crescent” we all learned about in grade school.

The first plows were apparently sharpened logs that were first pulled by people and later by domesticated livestock of one kind or another.

Those plows of the earliest designs did duty for thousands of years – and in fact are still being used in some parts of the world today.

Gradually, plows began to take on a more modern appearance, although appearances in this case were deceiving. Plow blades continued to be made of wood for generations, although cast iron tips were eventually added. That design worked tolerably well in cutting through thin topsoil, with the soil laid over in a long strip by the wooden moldboard.

When the first colonists arrived in North America, they brought their European plows with them. In those days, the plow was pretty much the only animal-drawn tool used, not only to prepare fields for planting by turning the soil, but also to culti-

vate young plants. And those plows worked pretty well in the thin rocky soil along the East Coast. Much of the land first farmed out east was former forest land with a thin coat of soil over a rocky base. In those conditions, it didn’t pay to cut a furrow too deeply because you could easily break the plow on submerged rocks.

Some efforts were made to improve plows but it wasn’t until settlement ran out of forest in western Indiana that a real need for an improved plow was felt. When the first pioneers broke out of the eastern forest and saw gently rolling tallgrass prairie lands geographers call “The Prairie Peninsula” stretching as far as they could see, they were awed. And disappointed.

At first, it was felt this huge treeless expanse stretching west all the way to the Mississippi wasn’t fit to grow anything. But it didn’t take long for our ancestors to figure out that they had come upon the richest grain-producing soils on Earth.

Initial settlement nibbled around the edges of the prairies while the pioneers took advantage of the hardwood timber in the groves that grew along watercourses and in stretches of wet prairie. Settlement technology was timber-intensive, relying on logs for cabins, outbuildings and rail fences.

Eventually, advancements in building technology developed here in the Midwest made it possible to settle those rich but timber-scarce prairies, even miles from the nearest timber.

But it all depended on farmers somehow getting crops to grow on that rich soil. It was easier said than done, given the tough mat of prairie plants that protected the rich, deep soil below.

And even after the prairie was “broken” or turned over for the first time, the black loam clung to the plowshares of the 1820s and 1830s like glue. Running John the existing cast iron Deere plowshares through the soil didn’t polish them. Instead, the soil stuck to the shares, weighting them down and requiring sometimes several yokes of oxen to pull them.

Then John Deere, working in his blacksmith shop over in Grand Detour in western Illinois, had a brainstorm.

He knew steel, unlike iron, could be polished to a bright shine. Might not steel plow blades act the same?

Deere used a broken sawmill blade to make his first steel plowshare. In shape, it was little different from the

The Montgomery Village Board recently approved the budget for the new fiscal year that will begin May 1.

The annual budget process allows the village the opportunity to carefully account for public funds, to manage municipal finances wisely, and to plan for the funding of services and facilities required by the public. Residents and their needs are the driving force behind the budget process and the resulting annual budget is the single most important policy adopted each year.

The budget represents the culmination of five months of effort to present a plan honoring our commitment to our residents to maintain financial strength, demonstrate fiscal responsibility and plan for long-term sustainability of the village.

The budget is posted on the village website and is available for viewing at the Village Hall.

Can’t you please do something about that?

A: I agree with you. All of us in

Illinois pay painfully high property taxes – some of the highest property tax rates in the country. The portion of the tax bill that actually goes to the village is very small – around $350 per year if your total property tax is $7,000. The largest chunk of the taxes goes to the school district and other taxing bodies.

The $350 you pay in property taxes to the village pays for police protection, street maintenance, snow plowing, leaf pickup, brush pickup and many other services provided by

the village.

As a village board, we are well aware of the continued strain on the economy and the economic difficulties faced by many of our residents. Our board is fiscally conservative, and we are proud of the services we continue to provide our residents while holding the line on expenses. We have adopted a “do-more-with-less” mentality that has challenged all village departments to continually seek ways to save money.

On that note, I am happy to announce that the village board recently took action to freeze property taxes on existing properties for the fourth year in a row. We firmly believe that we can continue to provide a high level of services to our residents without increasing property taxes.

In addition to holding the line on property taxes, we also initiated an annual property tax rebate for residents

last year in which we rebated a total of $81,000 back to our residents. This year we are on target to rebate approximately $126,000. And I can assure you that we will continue to seek ways to reduce expenses and save money going forward.

Q: Does the state budget crisis have an effect on us locally?

A: The budget crisis in Springfield

continues to be a major concern for us.

Legislators have repeatedly discussed the idea of balancing the state budget by taking some of local municipalities’ share of revenue that is collected by the state, such as income tax and sales tax. We continue to emphasize to our legislators that such an action would have a disastrous effect on the budgets in Montgomery and other Illinois communities.

It’s high time for Illinois to legalize marijuana use Yorkville Police Chief Rich Hart is one of a growing chorus of law enforcement officials who are in favor of marijuana legalization, as long as it’s regulated properly.

“Prohibition just hasn’t worked and it’s never going to work,” he said.

“At this point, it’s better if there’s proper regulation.”

Years ago, the concept of legalizing the recreational use of marijuana would be as foreign as flying cars or a cure for cancer, but luckily these days the idea is getting more and more popular and a pair of Illinois legislators have filed bills seeking legalization.

House Bill 2353 and Senate Bill 316 both seek to legalize, tax and regulate the recreational use of marijuana in Illinois. The bills were proposed by state Rep. Kelly Cassidy and state Sen. Heather Steans, two Chicago Democrats.

Support has been shown even among law enforcement, with a Pew poll in January showing 68 percent of police officers believe marijuana should be legal in some form – 32 percent of those surveyed said they favored both medical and personal use of marijuana.

Hart said that, from a police officer’s perspective, he would rather deal with someone who’s consumed marijuana than someone who’s downed a few Jack and Cokes or beers.

“Most of the time, intoxicated

VIEWS Tony Scott [drunk] individuals can get violent,” he said. “You rarely see that with cannabis, unless it’s mixed with other drugs or alcohol. If it came down between the two, I’d rather deal with somebody who’s high on cannabis than I would an intoxicated individual.”

I asked Hart about the federal government’s stance on marijuana legalization, since Attorney General Jeff Sessions has said he’s not in favor of it.

“The federal government’s going to have to step up on this, and they’re just going to have to flat out do what the federal government does in situations like this, regulate it just like they do tobacco and alcohol,” Hart said.

“They’re going to have to give the states the guidelines to work from.”

Hart said he still has concerns about driving-under-the-influence cases increasing, as he has heard from some Colorado law enforcement colleagues, and he wants to see continued education about the dangers of alcohol, tobacco and marijuana for children.

“The biggest thing is, there’s got to be a continued education process,

like we do with tobacco and alcohol,” he said. “Really, we won’t be able to gauge how this worked until 10 years from now, how this will affect the 15to 25-year-olds, that generation.”

But it appears that the two proposed Illinois bills address some of the concerns, as consuming marijuana in public, consuming marijuana while driving, or driving under the influence of marijuana will remain illegal. A percentage of the tax revenues would go toward substance abuse treatment and public safety campaigns about the risks of tobacco, alcohol and marijuana, and residents could grow up to five plants out of reach of children and away from public view in their home.

The state has taken baby steps already toward legalization. Legislators approved a medical marijuana pilot program in 2014, but that comes with several restrictions on who can be prescribed marijuana for medical purposes. Last July, Gov. Bruce Rauner signed into law legislation that makes the possession of 10 grams of marijuana or less a civil law violation that is punishable by a fine, rather than jail time. In Yorkville, for example, someone caught with that amount of marijuana can be fined between $100 and $300 for a first offense.

Although these steps are well-meaning, they leave the state’s thriving black market for pot intact.

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health states that around 750,000 Illinois residents consume 327 metric tons of marijuana every year, but only 17,000 of those residents participate in the medical marijuana pilot program.

That’s a lot of pot, reefer, weed, or whatever you want to call it, that is being consumed and not taxed.

The idea of legalizing marijuana has become more popular over the past decade or so, to where people who wear “Make America Great Again” caps and people who sport Planned Parenthood shirts come to agreement on it. Retirement board rules Hastert

An Illinois retirement board voted 5-2 Wednesday to terminate the pension that imprisoned former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert received for his service in the Illinois General Assembly, according to the Associated Press.

Hastert, who served in the General Assembly from 1981 to 1986, was receiving an annual pension Dennis of $28,000. He is serving Hastert a 15-month prison term in a hush-money case that stemmed from his sexual abuse of students when he taught and coached at Yorkville High School between 1965 and 1980.

Hastert’s attorneys didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on the decision, the AP reported. Hastert could appeal the decision in state court.

Montgomery ‘Mayor on the Move’ is May 6 at Dunkin Donuts

Registration is now underway for the sixth annual Miles for Smiles 5K Run and 1 Mile and Kids Fun Run set for Sunday, April 30, at the District 308 Center at 61 Franklin St. The run benefits Oswego-based Celebrate Differences, which works daily to make certain that children and adults with disabilities through the state of Illinois get the support they need to live full lives in the community.

Miles for Smiles includes a professional time 5K race that takes runners through the village’s downtown on a USATF-IL certified course. Advance registration is $35 for the 5K, $25 for the 1-miler, and the Kid’s Fun Run is $10 (untimed). Registration increases by $5 on race day.

Backyard chickens, rain barrels and a tree planting were all a part of the annual village of Oswego ECO Commission Earth Day event Saturday at Village Hall.

Dozens of area residents attended the event to learn more about ways to become more environmentally conscious and to drop off items for recycling, including Styrofoam, eyeglasses and bicycles.

Oswego resident Kevin DeBolt said he came to the event to learn more about raising backyard chickens.

The village board is expected to vote on a measure May 16 or June 6 that would allow six hens in residential coops no larger than 10 by 14 feet, according to Village President Gail Johnson.

“We love eggs. I support backyard chickens, and this is something I think we would do at our house,” said DeBolt, who lives on Main Street. “We only buy organic food, and I’m concerned about what’s put in our food, especially for our daughter.”

Currently, Oswego bans the raising of any type of livestock within village limits, but urban chickens have become more widely accepted in recent years.

Municipalities including Batavia, Elgin, St. Charles and Naperville have all passed regulations in recent years allowing for backyard chickens. Oswego’s ordinance, like other communities, would not allow the raising of the noisier roosters.

Kayak rentals coming soon to downtown Oswego

By LYLE R. ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com As soon as weather and water levels in the Fox River allow, area residents will be able to obtain lessons on how to use a kayak and rent them in downtown Oswego.

At the Oswegoland Park District Board meeting April 19, trustees approved a special use permit allowing

Troy Cooper, owner of Naperville Kayak, to provide kayak rentals, tours and instructions starting at Hudson Crossing Park on the east bank of the Fox River, north of the Route 34 bridge.

“There is an excellent area at the north end of the park along a sand bar where the kayaks could be put into the river,” said Rich Zielke, park district executive director.

He said Cooper will bring the kay-

aks to the launching area in Hudson Park where renters can start their journey.

The tours and other events will end at the Saw Wee Kee Park boat launch on the Fox River. The kayaks and kayakers will be taken from the river and transported back to Hudson Crossing Park.

down Lane, off Orchard Road in Oswego Township.

Zielke said residents will be able to sign up for the kayaks on the company’s website for a specific day and time.

Hudson Park is often used for various park district events, but Zielke said Cooper agreed to work with them to be sure his business would not interfere with these.

There’s still time to catch the Little White School Museum’s annual “Easter Bonnets on Parade” seasonal exhibit before it closes at the end of April.

The museum is at 72 Polk St., Oswego.

The exhibit features dozens of colorful and fashionable examples from two centuries worth of men’s and women’s headgear that have been added to exhibits throughout the museum.

Visitors are invited to look carefully as they tour the museum

to find and identify all of them.

In addition, the museum’s seasonal exhibit case has been filled with Easter-related gifts and cards, including a collection of greeting postcards sent to 3-yearold Graeme Stewart in 1909. Also featured this year is a poster from Maggie Shepard’s millinery shop advertising the latest ladies’ hat styles for 1898-99.

Regular museum hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

While museum admission is free, donations are always gratefully accepted.

The Boulder Hill and Oswego Antique Study Group will meet at noon May 3 for their annual Spring Tea at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Oswego. This year’s gathering has an Italian theme, and will feature special family favorites created by members.

Proceeds from the April member auction will be disbursed. These funds are dedicated annually to community charity projects. Recipients chosen for 2017 include the Little White School Museum, Vietnam Moving Wall project in Oswego, and Mutual Ground. Excess auction items will benefit the Oswego Senior Center Gift Shop.

The District 308 Board of Education approved the new policy at its Feb. 27 meeting. The policy will be implemented for the 2017-18 school year but will be retroactive, meaning all outstanding debt will need to be paid by the start of the new school year.

Student fees are due immediately once assessed, and students whose fees are paid in full will not be affected by the new policy. Families who do not know if they have outstanding fees can access their children’s accounts in the Home Access Center on the “Parents” tab on the district website, sd308.org. Families who cannot afford to pay off the entire balance of are advised to begin paying down the fees and continue making payments through the summer.

The board said that the new policy was not created to punish students who cannot afford to pay fees and that denying participation in activities is the last course of action the district wants to take. Low-income families and families experiencing hardship can apply for a waiver.

School District 308 will implement a new policy for the 2017-18 school year that requires parents to pay off all outstanding student fees or implement a short duration payment plan designed to pay them off, according to information released by the district.

Under the policy, parents who are not in compliance will risk their students not being able to attend some school functions and participate in extracurricular activities.

Students who begin the 2017-18 school year with outstanding fees will not be able to participate in athletics, prom, homecoming dances, promotion ceremonies, or extracurricular activities such as clubs, dance, poms, cheer and robotics.

They also will not be eligible for parking permits and, in the case of graduating seniors, will not have access to their official transcripts. For detailed information on student fees, see Board of Education policy 4:140, available at sd308.org/domain/126.

Winners of Recycled Fashion Show announced OSWEGO LEDGER The Oswegoland Park District hosted the Project Greenway Recycled Fashion Show on April 21.

This show featured designs that were made of primarily recycled and repurposed materials.

Designers of all ages created Accessories or Runway Looks out of ties, aluminum cans, curtains, cardboard, car wires, dryer sheets, and more.

This year, the three judges were Angie Scharbert, fashion teacher at Oswego East High School, Melissa Kittoe, employee at the Prom Shoppe, and Julie Imfeld, college representative for FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising. They critiqued all entries, and community members attending the event had the opportunity to vote for the People’s Choice awards. The Limelight Theatre Company’s improv group, Fries With That?, entertained the crowd while the judges deliberated.

Speeding, fleeing among charges Montgomery police arrested Alejandro Guillen, 19, of the 1300 block of Talma Street April 20 at 11:51 p.m. in connection with a speeding vehicle incident near Route 30 at Briarcliff Road. Police said an officer observed Gullien’s 2006 Nissan Altima traveling eastbound on Route 30 from Route 31 at a high rate of speed and activated his emergency lights. Guillen’s vehicle continued at high speed, turning southbound onto Briarcliff Road from Route 30. Police said they later located Guillen’s vehicle unoccupied southeast of the Briarcliff Road and Route 30 intersection. Police said Guillen faces charges of speeding 30-39 mph over the limit, driving too fast for conditions, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, reckless driving, driving an uninsured motor vehicle and aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer.

KENDALL COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS Sheriff’s deputy among injured in three-vehicle crash A Kendall County sheriff’s deputy and two motorists were injured in a three-vehicle crash on Eldamain Road north of Schaefer Road in Little Rock Township April 19 at 5:35 p.m.

Police said the accident occurred as Deputy Robyn Williams was out of her squad car checking on an unoccupied vehicle in a ditch near the road. According to police, a vehicle driven by Shelby Zimmerman, 25, of the 200 block of Sheridan Road, Sheridan, went out of control and struck another vehicle that was driven by Frederick M. Moore, 36, of the 100 block of Pamela Drive, Bolingbrook. Zimmerman’s car then hit the vehicle that was in the ditch. Deputy Williams was hurt while trying to avoid being struck by Zimmerman’s vehicle.

Moore and Williams were taken to an area hospital, while Zimmerman was cited for driving too fast for conditions and not having a valid registration. Police said Eldamain Road was shut down for about two hours after the crash.

Frazer is Wolves’ savior

Oswego East freshman’s game-saving play preserves win over Oswego

By JOSHUA WELGE jwelge@kendallcountynow.com For a freshman, Oswego East’s Madison Frazer shows no fear.

Maybe it comes from having two older brothers, both soccer players.

Frazer hasn’t backed down from a challenge this year, and the Wolves’ defender has yet to miss a game.

She was a game-saver Tuesday.

Frazer knocked away a ball ticketed for the goal line with six minutes left at Oswego East, preserving a 1-0 Southwest Prairie Conference win over rival Oswego.

“Madison is one relentless player with a deep tank,” Oswego East coach Juan Leal said. “For a freshman to go out there and play literally until the ball crosses the line speaks to how she is.”

Villanova recruit Jasmine Ruiz scored the only goal in a game short on opportunities, her score coming in the sixth minute of the second half.

The Wolves (9-5, 5-1) were nursing the lead late when a ball got over an Oswego East defender, and bounced over the Wolves’ goalkeeper.

Her back to the field, Frazer rushed in, slid and knocked away the ball before Oswego (6-7, 2-3) had a chance.

“Everything happened so fast there,” Frazer said. “Once I saw it go over our defender’s head, I knew I had to do something. I saw the opponent, she messed up with the ball, I slid and prayed I didn’t score in my own goal.”

Leal is used to seeing his precocious young talent play with that mentality.

“She doesn’t back down from any girl, she is not afraid to take on anybody,” Leal said. “She’s really stepped into a role.”

Opportunities were few and far between, and Oswego’s best other than the Frazer play came early.

Riley Parker made a long run in the game’s second minute, but Oswego East goalkeeper Reagan Sanders smothered an up-close attempt. A Panthers’ corner kick was unsuccessful minutes later, and later in the first half Parker was whistled offsides on a cross ahead.

“We had opportunities early and we missed them early,” Oswego coach Kelsey Champion said. “We thought we’d get some back. We just didn’t capitalize and they did.”

They did, and the lethal left foot of Ruiz helped.

Wolves’ sophomore Maddie Kastel played it to Ruiz in the middle of the field, and Ruiz whistled a rising 15yard shot inside the right post.

“It just kind of came to me,” Ruiz said. “I saw an opening between the defenders and I thought ‘What the heck, why not.’ I took a chance. It was what we needed in that moment.”

“Jasmine has the range, she has the accuracy, she has all the components,” Leal said. “We’re going to miss her next year.”

Having a strong left foot is a unique advantage, and Ruiz plays to it.

“Their goalkeeper kept tracking to

my left so I crossed it and went to the right,” Ruiz said.

Oswego goalkeeper Megan Rasmussen was strong in goal, making a few diving stops later.

“All over the field we were decent,” Champion said. “We just didn’t take advantage.”

Oswego, which had won five of its last six, has a busy schedule ahead. The Panthers play Lyons and Palatine later this week at the Naperville Invite, with two league games and nonconference matchups with Batavia and St. Charles East next week.

“We’ll see how we stack up,” Champion said.

The Wolves, who lost to Plainfield North in overtime last week, play at Minooka on May 4.

“The girls are happy to have the opportunity,” Leal said. “I think Plainfield’s loss was encouragement to them.”

Oswego’s new mile record-holder learns valuable lessons from younger brother

She was right.

Christiansen improved from 26th in state cross country as a freshman to ninth this past fall. She likewise feels there is unfinished business on the track. She was one spot away from the state finals in the 1,600 as a freshman.

She’s stronger now.

Christiansen overcame a bout of tendinitis in cross country, and for a spell was feeling faint as she adjusted her eating habits and vitamins.

Now she takes vitamins and iron, and Gatorade and energy gels at races.

A good breakfast is important on race day, and Christiansen has a personal favorite.

“My favorite races are the late ones so I can sneak in an IHOP run,” Christiansen said with a laugh. “I love their 2x2x2 meal. I always like to get some protein and some kind of carbs.”

Christiansen, ranked 12th in her class, aspires to a career in law, possibly as a district attorney. She holds a high interest in colonial history, and loves taking family vacations to historical spots like Williamsburg and Jamestown.

In the immediate future is getting back to state, and Christiansen knows the path to the medal podium won’t be easy. Illinois is blessed with an abundance of top-notch distance runners this spring. Seven have already broken 5 minutes in the 1,600.

Christiansen, ever patient, hopes to peak at the right time.

“It’s a long race, and it’s a long season,” Christiansen said. “You might not get the perfect results the first race or the second or the third. You have to be willing to work hard and wait for the results you want.”

Patience is a precious virtue to Isabelle Christiansen.

The Oswego sophomore carries it with her whenever she runs. It’s important to consider in the sport of track where not every goal is reached on a straight line.

Significantly, Christiansen learned patience from someone she has a big sweet spot for.

That is her younger brother Ryan.

A 13-year-old fraternal twin, he was born with Down syndrome. That hasn’t stopped Ryan from running himself, and avidly watching Christiansen compete.

“He’s taught me to be more considerate of others, and patience,” Christiansen said. “That patience is so important in my running. Sometimes things are going to be easy, and sometimes you have to work harder. Watching him overcome obstacles is inspiring to me and is inspiring to everybody.

“And he is the biggest smiler – he loves to laugh and giggle.”

The Christiansens had plenty to smile about last Saturday.

Ryan ran the Special Olympics 800 at the Distance Night in Palatine, and posted a personal best.

It was a milestone night for Isabelle, too, who ran under the 5-minute mark for the first time ever in the metric mile. Christiansen’s 4:59.45 broke the 1,600 school record previously held by Kelsey Hjorth, and is the seventh-fastest time outdoors this spring in Class 3A according to the Athletic.net database.

For this achievement, Oswego’s Isabelle Christiansen is the Ledger Athlete of the Week.

“It’s a really great meet. They have a lot of good runners, and there is a lot of positive energy,” Christiansen said.

“My coach and I, we were excited for something big to happen and this was the perfect environment for that to happen.”

The Christiansens’ is a special sister-brother relationship. She’s spent much of her life working with special-needs children.

Her mom, Rebecca, founded the nonprofit Celebrate Differences in 2007. Its mission is to support individuals with disabilities in reaching their full potential and providing resources to their families and the community.

Christiansen volunteers there often. She went to special-needs prom as a buddy to a boy with autism.

“It definitely plays a big role in my life,” Christiansen said. “You have to be willing to work hard, and not see the results right away. Take a race, for instance. You can’t always make your move right away. It’s a long race.”

Christiansen has come a long way as a runner.

She was introduced to running through a 5K in elementary school at Old Post, and remembers finishing in 22 minutes.

“It was awesome,” Christiansen said. “I got a rush out of it.”

She joined cross country and track in junior high, attended an Oswego running camp – and fell in love with the sport. It kept her active. She made a ton of friends, and felt like she belonged.

Kapusinski comes through in the pinch

Kolten Kapusinski waited for eight innings.

The Oswego junior watched.

And then he ran.

Kapusinski reached on a pinch-hit walk in the bottom of the ninth, advanced to third on an errant pickoff and scored the game-winner on a throwing error as Oswego topped Plainfield East in dramatic fashion 4-3 on Monday in the Southwest Prairie Conference.

“I was just looking for any way to get on base,” Kapusinski said. “Once I got on base, it was kind of just a reaction. I saw the ball get away and coach was saying to go, so I just went. It was a little bit of luck, I guess.”

It’s Oswego’s second walk-off win in extra innings in conference. The Panthers (12-5, 5-3) previously topped Plainfield North 3-2 in eight innings.

“We’ll take it,” Oswego coach Joe Giarrante said. “It wasn’t pretty, we weren’t on top of our game, but we did enough to get the win.”

Kapusinski was tipped off Monday that he could be getting the nod late. He started taking his hacks in the dugout, waiting for his moment.

With one out in the ninth, Kapusinski quickly fell behind in the count 0-2 to Plainfield East lefty Ryan Louck.

He worked the count full, then took an

inside offering.

“As soon as they told me I was coming in, I was swinging for two innings before. It gives you a lot of energy,” Kapusinski said. “You just have to stay ready. As long as you’re staying in the game mentally and paying attention, you should be OK.” “He’s a game hitter,” Giarrante said of Kapusinski. “He’ll go up and take his hacks, he has decent eyes and he’s not going to swing at much out of the zone. He did a good job fouling off some pitches and did a great job of running the bases aggressively.”

Indeed, Kapusinski took two bases when a low pickoff skipped into foul territory in right field. After Gabe Panza was walked intentionally, Cole Aughenbaugh hit a liner snagged by the Bengals’ third baseman. The snap throw back to first base for a potential double play was errant, allowing Kapusinski to scamper home.

Plainfield East’s loss was its fifth straight in conference.

“We’re just making too many mistakes and it’s all self-inflicted,” Plainfield East coach Adam O’Reel said.

“We’re not a team that is going to put up a ton of runs, so we can’t make mistakes.”

It made a winner of Oswego reliever Dustin Wayne.

“Dustin’s solid – you know he’s going to be around the plate and he’ll have at least two of his three pitches working,” Giarrante said. “He battled. He’ll get you outs when you need them.”

Giarrante was relieved to get Wayne a win with 73 pitches thrown.

“I was hoping to get that last out in the top of the ninth because he was getting close to 80 pitches,” Giarrante said. “He’s a big, strong kid and he hasn’t pitched in a week, which is good.”

Plainfield East (12-9, 2-5) scored first, Jacob Havis singling in J.J. Zywiciel in the second inning. Oswego came back with two in the third. Panza’s hot shot off the Bengals’ third baseman into left field scored J.D. Miller and Cody Peterlin to give Oswego a 2-1 lead.

The Bengals came back with two in the fourth. Jacob Knoebel was hit by a pitch, forcing in a run, and a second came in on Sean Hebreard’s bases-loaded walk. Miller’s RBI groundout scored Dylan White to tie it 3-3 in the fourth.

Oswego notes: Aughenbaugh struck out eight over six innings, and went 3-for-4 with a double and RBI in Oswego’s 8-1 win over Joliet West on April 21. Jeffrey Crafton went 2-for-3 with a run scored and RBI. Aughenbaugh went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, Cody Peterlin 2-for4 with two runs and an RBI, and Dylan White 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI in a 10-2 win over Joliet West on April 19.

Oswego was held to three hits in a 6-1 loss to Plainfield East on April 25.

Wolves bounce back with four-hit gem from Goetz East gets 7 runs in top of 2nd inning in win

By DRAKE SKLEBA sports@kendallcountynow.com After opening 2017 with 18 consecutive victories, Oswego East was stunned, 10-9, last Friday by up-and coming Joliet Central.

On Monday evening at Slammers Stadium, the Wolves got back on track, rolling past Plainfield South and Western Illinois-bound Jordan Mikel, 9-1.

East senior right-hander Garrett Goetz (6-0), a Waubonsee recruit, threw a four-hit masterpiece at the Cougars (11-6-1, 4-3). Dom Zupo (3-for-4) led the Wolves with three singles, two in a seven-run second inning.

With Minooka’s 8-7 victory over Plainfield North (14-4, 5-2), the Wolves

(19-1, 6-1) regain the top spot in the Southwest Prairie Conference.

Goetz led off the game with a single and scored on a sacrifice fly from Dylan Jones for an unearned run. South’s Mikel hammered a Goetz fastball over the left-field fence in the bottom of the first to tie it, 1-1.

Aided by three more Cougars errors, a bases-loaded wild pitch and a bases-loaded walk, the Wolves exploded for seven runs in the top of the second for an 8-1 lead. BJ Graves picked up the RBI on the bases-loaded walk.

JD Ludacka had the only RBI hit in the inning, and Zupo had two singles in the inning, one a perfectly placed bunt.

“I saw the third baseman playing back and just dropped the bunt down,” Zupo said. “I’ve been doing that all season and it’s worked out well for me and my teammates.”

The Wolves extended their lead to 9-1 on a sacrifice fly by Jake Stock in

the fifth.

Goetz (6-0) allowed three hits in the first two innings, then was in complete control. The other hit off him came in the seventh.

“We came into the game with a lot of energy and confidence,” Goetz said.

“Plainfield South is a great team, but we were very confident we could win.

I pitched very well today and my defense was flawless behind me. I owe a lot of my success to my batterymate, Dom Zupo.”

“Garrett [Goetz] and I have an outstanding rapport between us, “ Dupo said. “We trust each other even when Garrett throws me an 0-2 curveball, and that is the main reason we are so successful.”

Garrett Fiduccia chipped in with two singles in three at-bats for the Wolves.

“This was a big bounce-back win for us,” Oswego East coach Matt Engelhardt said. “We have a very resilient

and confident group here at Oswego East. Garrett [Goetz] has pitched like he did today all season. He has always been matched up with the opposition’s best and beat a very good pitcher today [Mikel].”

Eric Fitzmaurice allowed one run and three hits in his 5 2⁄3 innings of solid relief for the Cougars.

“My curveball was definitely my best pitch tonight,” Fitzmaurice said.

“We just have to forget about this loss and bounce back tomorrow.”

Plainfield South was swept by Plainfield Central in a two-game series last week.

Oswego East notes: Devon Zielke went 3-for-4 and Mason Madalinski 2-for-4 for the Wolves in a 10-9 loss to Joliet Central on April 21. The Wolves lost to Plainfield South 10-0 on April 25.

The game had been scheduled for April 26 but was moved up due to that day’s forecasted inclement weather.

Oswego varsity: Annie Scaramuzzi struck out 12 batters in a two-hit gem as the Panthers topped Plainfield Central, 2-1, on April 25. Scaramuzzi threw a five-inning perfect game, striking out nine, in the Panthers’ 18-0 win over Joliet Central on April 19. Ashley McCance and Rebecca Pieroni both homered.

Oswego East varsity: Ashley Schultz homered, doubled twice and drove in five runs, Jamie Haas was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, and Kaili Chval 3-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored for the Wolves (12-4) in a 22-5 rout of Naperville North on April 22.

Rachel Johnson was 3-for-4 with a homer, double and four RBIs and Juvia Davis 3-for-4 with a double, triple and three runs scored in Oswego East’s 10-4 win over Minooka on April 21.

Emily Schultz threw a complete game, and the Wolves rallied with five runs with two outs in the sixth inning to top West Aurora 5-1 on April 20. Danielle Williams drove in Emily Schultz with the tying run, and Ashley Schultz singled in the go-ahead run. Emily Schultz was 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs in a 12-9 loss to Plainfield Central on April 19.

GIRLS TRACK

Oswego: Panthers sophomore Isabelle Christiansen ran a school record 4:59.45 for third place at Palatine’s Distance Night on April 21.

Oswego East: The Wolves took sixth at the Neuqua Valley Invite on April 21. Oswego East won the 3,200 relay, the team of Abby Flammersfeld, Kara Webb, Isabella Gyori and Alexis Henz finishing in 9:56.51.

Maya Taylor went 16 feet, 10.5 inches to win the long jump, and Ty Battle was second in the high jump with a personal best 4 feet, 11 inches. Meghan Stock was fourth in the 400 (1:02.44), and Abby Flammersfeld took fourth in the 1,600 (5:23.25).

BASEBALL

Oswego East freshmen: Tyler Heidkamp struck out seven over 6.2 innings in the Wolves’ 5-3 win over Plainfield South. Alex Kelsch and Andrew Petsche had three hits apiece. Nate Jendraszkievicz struck out 12 in a complete game three-hitter in the Wolves’ 11-1 win over Joliet Central on April 22. Juan Parrott had two hits, two runs and an RBI. Oswego freshmen: Jack Lemke was 4-for4 with two doubles and four RBIs and A.J. Freund held Joliet West to one hit, striking out four, for Oswego (12-5-1, 3-3) in a 9-1 win over Joliet West on April 21.

Lemke’s walk-off triple with the bases loaded scored Nikolai Sardo, Aidan Griffin and David Wilson to cap a 10-9 comeback victory over Joliet West on April 19. Sardo had three of Oswego’s 14 hits and Josh Grimes (3-0) struck out three over the final 2.1 innings.

Freund threw a complete game, Darren Mancke doubled and drove in three runs and Sardo had two hits in Oswego’s 4-2 win over Plainfield North on April 17.

Bennett Peterson was in his element Friday evening in Wheaton.

At the Red Grange Classic at Wheaton Warrenville South, a three-flight boys track and field invitational, the Oswego senior was runner-up in the fast heat of the 3,200 run and fourth in the 1,600.

“In the mile I had a strong closing, but I still need to get my time down,” said Peterson, who was timed in 4 minutes, 31.47 seconds.

Peterson was clocked in 9:33.85 at the longer discipline.

“I have made it to state three times in cross but never in track,” Peterson said. “I had a pretty weak [track] season last year. I know if I do get [to the Class 3A state finals in Charleston] that I could compete with the best of the best.”

The middle distance and longer runners carried the night for the Panthers.

In the three classes, Oswego scored 128 total points.

The Panthers were seventh in both Class A and B and fourth in C. “In the distance areas, we were tremendous tonight,” Oswego coach Jeff Edwards said. “Not the best of conditions for the sprinters.”

In the first running event of the late afternoon, the Panthers’ Joe Fioresi, David Gaytan, Collin Boone and Noah Vanderhei collaborated to win the Class A 3,200 relay in 8:10.58.

“My only goal was to run a sub-two-[minute leg] and get us the lead,” Fioresi said. “I did that and pushed through [the cold and windy conditions].”

In addition to the twin Peterson performances in the two longest open runs, the Panthers received top-notch outings from Mitchell Bradford and Brandon Nelson, as each was victorious in his respective heat of the 3,200 run.

Bradford was triumphant in Class B in 9:50.49; Nelson took C in 9:56.94.

“I’m pleased,” Edwards said.

“We’re battling some injuries. As soon as we get some guys healthy, I like where our team is going.”

The Panthers also placed athletes in all three heats of the 800.

Fioresi was sixth in the fast heat in 2:02.9, and Boone was second in Class B at 2:03.28.

But Gaytan bettered both his relay teammates in capturing the third heat in 2:05.17.

Keegan Murphy and Erik Kivela were second and fourth, respectively, in the second and third flights of the 1,600 in 4:34.7 and 4:39.75.

Brian Jimenez was fourth in the 400 and ran the lead leg of the Panthers’ third-place 1,600 relay.

There was also encouraging news for Oswego in the six field events.

Nick Janca lost the high jump to Glenbard West senior Ethan Larsen on criteria after both athletes cleared 6 feet, 3 inches.

“I was not that pleased, actually,” Janca said. “My PR is 6 feet, 6 inches. I only jumped 6-3. It was cold and windy. But I would have liked to get to 6-5 today.” “[Janca] has surpassed his own expectations,” Edwards said. “He has become more focused on getting faster. That’s what we have been telling him, ‘If you get faster, it will make you jump higher.’”

The Panthers’ Chris Grady and David Greenwood had career-best marks in the long jump.

The former was sixth in Class A with his 20-11 effort, and the latter went 18-10.5.

Oswego East: Gavin Vernell won the 100-meter dash in 11.49 seconds and took second in the 200 (23.27), leading the Wolves to sixth place at the Kaneland Peterson Invitational. Oswego East’s Chase Nimee, Gavin Frias, Chris Luz and Matt Salazar were fourth in the 3,200 relay (8:31.07), Joshua Cave, Nathan Litterio, Andrew Cespedes and Jordan Boatright were fourth in the 1,600 relay (3:35.40) and Daniel King was fourth in the 3,200 (10:20.17). At Palatine’s Distance Night, Oswego East’s Kijana Caldwell was 10th in the 800 (1:56.70) and Dylan Zangri was ninth in the 1,600 (4:18.15).
