GOP race still too close to call Absentee ballots may determine who won in District 2 primary

mschury@kendallcountynow.com Still uncounted absentee ballots may determine the winner in last week’s Republican Party primary election for a seat on the Kendall County Board.

Voters in the board’s District 2 were asked to cast ballots March 15 for three candidates and chose Matthew Kellogg, Tony Giles and Diane Selmer. However, just 17 votes separate Selmer and another candidate, incumbent board member Dan Koukol.

The Aurora Election Commission issued a statement March 17 saying that all eligible absentee, grace period and provisional ballots for the primary will be counted on Tuesday, March 29.

As of March 15 there were 96 ballots within the jurisdiction of the Aurora Election Commission that had not been returned. There are 479 grace period and 197 provisional ballots to be counted, according to the commission.

The statement from the commission did not say how many ballots were outstanding in the Kendall County portion of Aurora. However, Kendall County Clerk Debbie Gillette Dan Koukol estimates her office is waiting for about 42 absentee ballots in the rest of District 2 located in Kendall County outside of Aurora. Gillette’s office does not count ballots in the Aurora portion of Kendall County.

She added that her staff was reviewing any ballots cast after 7 p.m. on election night when the polls were kept open an extra hour due to a ballot shortage.

“No person shall be provided with a daily breakdown of ballots returned to the Commission, nor shall the Commission release the names of the voters who have ballots outstanding. A count will be provided to the public on the website auroravotes.org,” the Aurora Election Commission statement said.

Last week Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner took note of the delay in the

Aurora Election Commission’s results, which was spread out across the city, and called for a referendum to be placed on November’s ballot to do away with the comDiane Selmer mission.

The Aurora City Council voted to place such a referendum on the ballot in 2010, but the Election Commission refused to do so, arguing that the issue could be placed on the ballot only through voter petitions.

“The Aurora Election Commission’s abysmal failure Tuesday night to properly provide online the election results from within its jurisdiction to the public is but the most recent example of the general incompetence of the Commission Board, as well as the staff and the Board attorney, who are collectively and individually wasting local tax dollars,” Weisner said in a statement.

“The Aurora Election Commission is a ‘one trick pony’ – and a lame one at that,” said Weisner.

mschury@kendallcountynow.com Kendall County Clerk Debbie Gillette apologized for balloting delays that were reported during last week’s primary election as a near-record number of voters went to the polls.

Gillette told the Kendall County Board during a meeting March 16 that she was getting mixed reports during the election about ballot supply.

“I apologize for any inconvenience. We did everything that we could possibly do to make sure the wait [for ballots], if there was any, was short,” she said. “It kind of depended on what judge you talked to – maybe they weren’t sitting at the ballot table, I honestly don’t know, because I’m hearing one thing and people are saying another thing.”

Democratic Kendall County Board member Elizabeth Flowers asked how long some precincts went without ballots.

“I don’t have a good confirmation – some people were saying they were out of ballots, judges came back in and I asked

if they were out of ballots and they said no,” Gillette said. “I was hearing conflicting things. What’s being told to me is that maybe some of them were out 15 to 20 minutes. It was a long day.”

Kendall County polling places were kept open one hour past their scheduled 7 p.m. closing on election night. Earlier in the day some Democratic Party voters reported problems with their ballots.

Shaw Media, owner of the Oswego Ledger, is acquiring Kaneland Publications Inc., the publisher of the Elburn Herald and Sugar Grove Herald. The deal is expected to close the first week of April, the two companies announced Tuesday.

According to Shaw Media Vice President J. Tom Shaw, the acquisition is part of Shaw Media’s strategy to expand its weekly newspaper network in suburban Chicago.

Last June, Shaw acquired the Record group of weekly newspapers in the suburban communities of Oswego, Montgomery, Yorkville, Plano and Sandwich. In October of 2012, Shaw acquired 22 suburban Chicago weekly publications from GateHouse Media. With the addition of the Elburn Herald and Sugar Grove Herald, Shaw will publish 31 weekly newspapers in the Chicago suburbs, as well as dailies in DeKalb, McHenry and Will counties.

Thrift shops also won’t take tube TVs. Goodwill’s website indicates it no longer accepts tube TVs and Caring Hands Thrift Shop in Yorkville also doesn’t take them.

Hartman said that recyclers used to get payments from manufacturers to take the TVs. Those subsidies are still available, but they are based on the weight of the electronic items they accept, he said. When recyclers hit a certain weight threshold the manufacturers no longer have to subsidize the disposal of the TVs. “Once they paid for ‘X’ amount of pounds, their obligations are done,” Hartman said. “The whole bottom of this market has fallen through just within the last year. A lot of us saw it coming. It’s just one of those things that you say, ‘Well maybe it won’t happen. Well, now it’s happening.’’

Howe adds that the weight threshold set for this year was hit in January.

“My guess would be that they just had so many [TVs] sitting around that when the year rolled over they were just not able to collect as many as they anticipated,” he said.

Hartman says he believes the manufacturers have a responsibility for the old TVs. “The manufacturers say the end-oflife responsibility is for the consumer who purchased it and most environmentalists are saying the typical individual doesn’t have the resources to do that. You [the manufacturer] know

now to demanufacture it better than somebody else,” Hartman said.

Since vendors stopped taking the old TVs, some people began dumping them off on the side of the road as well as at municipal sites that once took them. Hartman says he’s seen the TVs on the side of the road and he used to pick them up and take them to a recycler in Will County that has since stopped accepting them.

Hartman says that recyclers used to take the TVs and reuse the glass. In fact, he said e-waste recycling was a booming industry for a while. Now, with flat-screen TVs being popular, the glass, which contains lead, is no longer in demand. In order to be repurposed the lead has to be removed from the glass.

“There are very few smelters that can separate that lead from the glass,” Hartman said.

Tube TVs were banned from landfills because of concerns about the lead leaking into the ground, said Aaron Rybski, environmental health services director for Kendall County.

“There is a lot of lead in these tube TVs and it’s just a lot of nasty stuff that they ultimately have to dispose of. It’s getting rough. There have been a lot of businesses that have been closing down and the landscape is changing.”

Hartman adds that as long as you don’t break the TV up, they can sit in a closet or basement without any health concerns.

“If you break the tube then you’ve got a problem,” he said.

The reservation deadline is July 22. Montgomery Fest is held in Montgomery Park at the corner of River and Mill Street.

The fee for a handmade craft booth is $35 for all three days. A craft booth is defined as the selling of goods that are made by hand by the crafter. This does not include the resale of merchandise purchased from some other source.

The fee for a commercial booth is $125 for all three days. A commercial booth is defined as the resale of manufactured goods (not handmade) or services provided to the community for profit. Please note that handing out food samples requires a Kane County Health Department food handling permit.

There is no fee for a nonprofit booth, defined as an organization, school or religious organization and associated affiliates of any of the above as well as organizations that serve the community in a notfor-profit manner. However, an application must still be completed to reserve your space.

There is an extra $30 fee if a booth requires electricity and the space size of each booth is 10’ by 10’.

Old model tube TVs are posing a growing problem for public officials in Kendall County who say they are getting calls from frustrated residents who want to recycle them but can’t because recycling vendors have stopped taking the old sets.

To make matters still more complicated, state law prohibits TVs from being placed in the trash.

Aaron Howe, an administrative intern for the village of Oswego, said the old TVs will not be accepted at the village’s Recycling Extravaganza set for Saturday, April 23. The annual extravaganza is the largest recycling event in the county.

Referring to the problem of recycling the old TVs, Howe said, “It’s really challenging for the village, it’s something that we get a lot of calls about and we are definitely interested in providing that service, we just have to find a way. From the village’s perspective we have residents looking for it, but we don’t recycle the televisions as a municipality. It’s kind of out of our control. We have to find a vendor that is able to do it at a reasonable cost.”

In 2012 Illinois banned tube TVs from being placed in landfills. Marlin Hartman, Kendall County’s solid waste coordinator, said the new television market then changed as high definition, flat-screen TVs dropped in price and became popular.

Like Oswego, Bart Olson, Yorkville’s city administrator, said the city won’t take tube TVs because the city has no vendor to accept them.

“It’s tough for us to even get a call back from haulers to get a quote together to schedule these pickup dates and get a permanent collection site in town,” Olson said. “You’ve either have to find a hauler that is willing to take them for a fee or let them sit there.”

Best Buy stores used to take old TVs for a fee, according to their website.

County coroner should resign The Kendall County Coroner’s Office will start a new era in December when Ken Toftoy completes his final four-year term and a new coroner – to be elected in November – is sworn into office.

We believe that county residents shouldn’t have to wait until December and Toftoy’s term to end for change to come to the coroner’s office. Instead, we believe Toftoy should step down from the position now. By resigning, Toftoy would provide the county board with an opportunity to appoint an interim coroner to complete his term.

We do not make this recommendation lightly. However, we are appalled by surveillance tapes made of Toftoy at his Yorkville office that have been widely circulated on the internet in recent weeks. On one of the tapes Toftoy can be heard discussing how the county building and zoning department could be used to harass one of his political opponents while on another he can be heard making a lewd remark about a deceased individual’s anatomy.

Meanwhile, as we reported March 10, Illinois State Police are continuing with a criminal investigation of the coroner’s office. A state police spokesman declined to comment on the specifics of the investigation, but confirmed that it is of a criminal nature. We look forward to learning and reporting on the results of the investigation when it is complete.

We are concerned the conniving and sophomoric behavior Toftoy exhibits on the tapes – especially when handling the deceased – will continue until he leaves office. While Toftoy remains in office, county taxpayers have absolutely no assurances that it won’t.

We believe the taxpayers deserve a coroner who will show sensitivity, dignity and respect to all the deceased handled by the coroner’s office starting right now.

A story of determination REFLECTIONS Roger Matile While it’s true that women certainly haven’t had an easy time of it during the past several millennia, it’s also true that here in the U.S., they’ve had many more opportunities to make a go of it on their own than in virtually any other nation on earth.

Women enjoyed better prospects in the United States almost as soon as it was established, although it took a long time for the law to catch up to the idea that women were perfectly capable of owning their own land, voting, and otherwise participating as full citizens. Especially during pioneer times, the frontier was a place where single women could, if not always thrive, at least make their own way.

For some reason, many tend to view the role of women during the nation’s frontier era as similar to that of the poor women who have suffered under the Taliban and other religious fundamentalists of virtually every creed. In reality, women were key ingredients in the settlement of the frontier as it moved west from the shores of the Atlantic Ocean.

From the 16th through the 19th century era of settlement, women were almost a requirement for a successful settlement. They were most needed by the farmers of that era.

It was not merely a whim that his father immediately sought another wife when Abraham Lincoln’s birth mother died from disease (the dreaded ‘milk sick’). On the Kentucky frontier of that era, it really did take a couple to make a household function. Husbands were expected to do the farming and other heavy manual labor, while wives were expected to take care of many and varied household tasks – which were also heavy manual labor in their own right – ranging from raising the kids to the backbreaking job of doing the wash to tending large gardens and preserving and preparing food.

It’s sometimes claimed that women couldn’t own property during the frontier era, but that’s simply not true.

Here in Kendall County, for instance, at least 22 women obtained patents on some 30 parcels of government land between 1836 and 1849. Granted, some of these women were purchasing the land for their husbands, but others were not.

For instance, Emeline Towle purchased 80 acres in Fox Township in 1848, and it was for her own use.

Where are the state income tax monies, the state sales tax monies, the state gasoline taxes, and all the other state taxes and fees we are charged? Are they being kept in some huge vault in Springfield? Or are they earning interest in some state bank?

If Illinois is not using these monies, then why is the state still collecting? It seems to me, that if we are not going to get anything in return, then we should not have to pay the taxes until the state gets its act together.

New curriculum needed

To the Editor: I am a seventh-grade student in School District 308. I am writing this letter to tell everyone what I, and many other people in my school, think of SpringBoard, the new language arts curriculum that my district recently adopted.

My district spent a lot of school funds on this new curriculum, and I feel like that was a very poor investment. SpringBoard is unfulfilling to both students and teachers. Many teachers think that this new curriculum gives them no creativity whatsoever in teaching, and it doesn’t teach kids all of the necessary elements to be successful later on in college, or for that matter, the rest of life.

A lot of students think that SpringBoard is very boring and way too low-level, especially for honors students like myself. We also don’t like how the SpringBoard curriculum only has us read little bits of books, and not the whole thing. We feel as though that is not a thorough lesson because it is not full.

Oswego seeks volunteers to take on variety of roles OSWEGO LEDGER The Oswego Historic Preservation Commission, the Environmentally Conscious Oswego (ECO) Commission, and the Cultural Arts Commission are all seeking applications for vacant positions.

The Oswego Historic Preservation Commission is currently accepting applications from Oswego residents for three positions. Experience in preservation, architecture, history, planning, real estate, construction or a similar background is recommended for the HPC. The ECO Commission and the Cultural Arts Commission are also accepting applications from Oswego residents for one position each.

“We printed them and got them out there as fast as we could,” Gillette said.

She added that the polling places do not have the ability to print ballots onsite, but her office does have two printers from which they can print ballots.

While there may have been an issue with ballot supply, the voter turnout was near record highs for the primary. Gillette reported that 45 percent of registered voters in Kendall County cast ballots in either the Democratic or Republican party primary. In the last three primary elections, voter turnout

The Montgomery Foundation is seeking applications from Montgomery residents who would volunteer to host and manage a donated Little Free Library. The neighborhood libraries will be paid for and provided by the Montgomery Foundation. Successful applicants will propose a desirable location and provide stewardship of the library once installed.

Little Free Libraries encourage family reading and book sharing through convenient neighborhood locations where children can literally serve themselves. The slogan “Take a Book, Share a Book” typifies the concept.

Montgomery currently hosts two known Little Free Libraries, one located near Lakewood Creek Elementary School, and one located near McDole Elementary school. Both have been popular book sharing sites and both are managed by volunteer stewards.

CLUB FILE Antique Study Group gathers April 6; will conduct auction

The Antique Study Group will meet at noon Wednesday, April 6, at the Little White School House Museum in Oswego.

The group’s annual auction will be hosted by Liz Torgerson and Karen Lamboley will act as cohostess.

Members will provide auction items to Duane Torgerson who will act as auctioneer. The money raised will help benefit the group’s expenses and provide charity donations to worthy causes during the year.

Sheri Kohout hosted the March meeting at her home and Pat Hornburg, acting as cohostess, provided an array of delicious refreshments.

Kohout gave an interesting and informative program on Vaseline and other fluorescent glass.

The study group was formed in 1964 by Bernice Clouse, who loved antiques and wanted others with the same interest to learn more about them.

Hastert sentencing delay OK’d 11 OSWEGO LEDGER A federal judge overseeing Dennis Hastert’s hush-money case has granted prosecutors’ request to delay the former U.S. House Speaker’s sentencing until the end of next month, the Associated Press reported Wednesday.

Judge Thomas M. Durkin has scheduled Hastert’s sentencing for April 27 at 10 a.m. at the Dirksen Federal Court building in Chicago. Objections in the case must be filed by April 8, according to the AP. Hastert’s sentencing was previously scheduled for April 8.

The AP also reported that a federal

court transcript says that an alleged sex abuse victim could testify at the sentencing.

It’s the first time that the court has referenced sex abuse in the case.

Hastert, a Plano resident, pleaded guilty Oct. 28 to violating Dennis bank laws in seeking Hastert to pay someone $3.5 million in hush money.

Durkin agreed at a hearing in January to push sentencing back from Feb. 29 to April 8 after Hastert’s attorneys said the 74-year-old Republican had health problems.

The task force was able to locate Bates through an anonymous tip from a resident who had observed Kendall County’s most wanted list. He had been a fugitive since September, police said.

Engelhardt gets ready for 1st season with East

Even though Matt Engelhardt will begin his first year as the Oswego East baseball coach, there’s a certain sense of familiarity already.

Engelhardt replaces Bobby Kaminski, who resigned after being named the school’s athletic director.

The Yorkville grad played baseball at Monmouth College before volunteering with the Wolves’ program in 2006 while student teaching.

In 2007, he joined the staff full time and has previously coached the sophomore team. Most recently, he coached the Oswego East summer baseball team.

“I’ve been here for a decade now, and so has the whole coaching staff. I even brought my dad on staff this year, so it really seems like a family,” Engelhardt said. “We have a pretty tight-knit group. I’ve worked with them all before, they’ve all played for me before, so there are no surprises.”

With 22 players on the roster, 11 re-

turn from last year’s record-setting 16win team. The top returning players include Southwest Prairie All-Conference player Vince Schwartz (34 hits, 26 RBIs, scored 30 runs and had a batting average of .347).

The other top returning players include junior Dylan Jones (22 hits, 14 RBIs, 19 runs, .272 batting average, 1.31 ERA in 16 innings with one win and 19 strikeouts; verbally committed to the University of Illinois), Garrett Goetz (ERA of 2.2 in 34 innings pitched with two wins and two saves; proba-

Panthers, Wolves looking to challenge for 2016 SPC title

The Oswego and Oswego East badminton teams are both on track to produce solid seasons in 2016.

In 2015, the Panthers went 8-2 in duals, won their sixth straight Southwest Prairie Conference title and qualified a program-best five to the state tourna-

ment. Two of them are back in juniors Bri Ecton and Jenna Metcalf.

A seventh straight SPC title as well as qualifying six players to state are among the goals for Oswego this year.

“When you are at the top everybody is trying to knock you down,” Oswego coach Scott Freischlag said. “I’m sure Oswego East is going to have a good team, Plainfield Central, Plainfield

East, Romeoville. Our conference is tough and has many state qualifiers.

It will be tough, but I think we have a strong group. We’ll compete and see what happens.”

The Wolves went second in conference and graduated Leena Hwang, the most decorated player in Oswego East and SPC history, but return just about everyone else from a squad that went

8-1 in duals in the regular season.

“Top to bottom, this is one of the better teams I’ve coached since I’ve been here,” Oswego East coach Marko Jurkovic said. “Last year, we leaned on Leena, but these girls have really taken a step forward, and it’s been fun to see the development. They are extremely

in at either first and third, in addition to Schultz or Mittelstaedt. Green and Davis return to the middle infield with sophomore Riley Kelsch adding depth.

Benson will also see time in the outfield with Johnson and Williams, and junior Autumn Sullivan, sophomore Jamie Hass and Webb also playing in the outfield.

“We’re really excited about this year,” Benson said. “Our goal as a team is to have a positive record, so we’re working hard to do that. We’re trying to get more wins in conference, and I’m confident we can do that.”

Oswego East comes off an 11-19 season, but went 2-12 in the SPC. The conference season opens April 5 at Minooka, with eight non-conference opponents leading up to the SPC opener to prepare the Wolves.

“I think we’ll do a lot better with conference this year,” Green said. “We have five returners, so we know what to expect. Plainfield East will be a big

one that was good last year, so we’re looking forward to hopefully beating them this year.”

Oswego East (0-1) opened the season with a 13-8 loss to Bolingbrook on March 17, and play will continue this week to kick off a five-game homestand.

“We have a younger team, but the greatest thing about this team is we all work well together,” Schultz said. “We all know each other. A lot of us have played travel ball or have known each other through different teams. We just all get along. Now we just have to work the little things out.”

And if those little things all work out like Oswego East hopes, the Wolves have a chance to capture the program’s first regional championship on its home field as the Wolves are slated to host the Class 4A tournament May 2328.

“That would be really cool,” Nussle said. “This group wants it.”

Panthers start season with tie, loss OSWEGO LEDGER

The Oswego girls soccer team opened the 2016 season with a 1-1 tie against Bartlett on Saturday in non-conference action.

Abby Grzetic scored Oswego’s lone goal in the first half. Bartlett scored its goal in the second half. The Panthers (0-1-1) used both goalkeepers in Megan Rasmussen (first half, two saves) and Madison Lockard (second half, one save).

Oswego boys: The Oswego boys track and field team traveled to the University of Illinois Armory to compete in the 24th Annual Gene Armer Invitational and won the team championship for the first time. Of the 12 players on Oswego East’s roster, eight are returning, including seniors Amna Hoda and Ibtesam Kamal and Amber Williams and juniors Stephanie Balbin, Annie Carmody, Andrea De Guzman, Simi Sharma and Gina Tito. The newcomers are seniors Ashley Munson, Nicole Arias and Clarissa Williams and junior Bailey Keating.

The Panthers and Wolves will play each other on April 18 at Oswego East. The SPC tournament is scheduled for April 28 and April 30 at Plainfield Central.

Don’t be fooled by the youth of the Oswego East softball roster.

With just one senior in the mix and four additional veterans, the Wolves may be inexperienced when it comes to varsity high school play, but the young players boast impressive softball resumes with three sophomores who made Division I commitments in the offseason.

Emma Benson is the lone senior this spring and will share captain responsibilities with junior returner Emily Green. Oswego East also returns Southwest Prairie All-Conference pitcher Emily Schultz as well as sophomores Juvia Davis and Rachel Johnson. Schultz and sophomore classmate Danielle Williams have given verbal commitments to Loyola’s 2019 recruiting class while Davis has made her decision to join Indiana Universi-

ty’s roster.

“With our roster being as young as it is, we definitely have talent and we’re athletic,” said Laura Nussle, who enters her fourth year as head coach.

“It’s just putting the pieces together and see who is going to fall in where.

It’s nice to have the leadership of Benson – and the returning five. We’re excited, and we’re versatile. I’m excited to see what happens. We have a lot of opportunity here.”

Schultz hit .454 in her freshman season last year and led the team in runs (34) and hits (49) and set a season record with eight triples. She also finished with a 5.22 earned run average over 112-plus innings. Benson will return behind the plate, sharing time at the catcher position with junior newcomer Nicole Schussler.

Strong start for Panthers

Before the season started, Oswego baseball coach Mark Johnson said the Panthers were already ahead of where they were at this point last season.

Three games into the 2016 season, Johnson was right.

The Panthers have started the year 3-0 with wins over Plano (12-0 in five innings), Bolingbrook (6-3) and Elk Grove (2-1).

“Things are going pretty smoothly.

In practice, they get it and that makes it go so much faster,” Johnson said. “It’s nice. We aren’t reteaching stuff. Last year, we had a lot of players we weren’t sure who was going to play where and this year, we only really had to replace our left fielder and second baseman, so that’s not so bad.”

There are 13 returning players from last year’s team that went 16-20 overall (6-16 in the Southwest Prairie Conference). Four of the team’s 11 seniors have committed to collegiate teams: shortstop/pitcher Konor Gengler (University of Wisconsin-Whitewater), infielder/pitcher Carter Turnquist (UW-Oshkosh), and designated hitter/ catcher Mike Dato (Monmouth), and

outfielder Jake Menard (Illinois Institute of Technology).

Other seniors on the roster are outfielder Joe Fogarty, infielder Mitch Gwodz, pitcher Luke Torrez, outfielder Austin Cepeda, outfielder/pitcher Jake Nalley, infielder Kurtis Klingbeil and infielder/pitcher Colton White.

The returning juniors are catcher/designated hitter Gabe Panza and outfielder/pitcher Cole Aughenbaugh.

Gengler earned All-Conference honors last year after he had 31 hits, 10 RBIs, scored 23 runs and had a batting average of .272. On the mound in 41 2/3 innings, he had three wins, 27 strikeouts and had an ERA of 1.68. Turnquist (36 hits, 16 RBIs, 17 runs, .313 batting average; won four games on the mound in 48 2/3 innings, 49 strikeouts), White (36 hits, 19 RBIs, .324 batting average), Aughenbaugh (32 hits, 18 RBIs, .327 batting average) and Panza (12 hits, seven RBIs) were all key contributors last season.

Junior newcomers are infielder Cody Peterlin, infielder/pitcher Noah Wernke, infielder Jared Johnson, outfielder Tanner Sohst, pitcher Lake Turner, pitcher Nathan Willig, infielder/pitcher Dustin Wayne and outfielder/pitcher Lukas Rife.

Squad boasts plenty of depth

ksharp@kendallcountynow.com Oswego senior infielder Ally Miller had learned to adapt to just about any situation in softball.

The four-year player will play for her fourth coach after Amanda Stanton was introduced as the newest Panther head coach in August, but this time Miller is excited about the changes this spring.

She is one of three seniors on a roster that includes three freshmen and two sophomores.

“If you saw all of us together, you’d never know we were different ages,” Miller said. “It makes us realize that it doesn’t matter your age; it’s your talent.

Just because you’re a senior, you aren’t going to automatically start. We’re going to have the best nine on the field.”

Stanton has a mix of players that create plenty of depth around the diamond and will use the early part of the season to develop her starting lineup.

“A lot of girls can play multiple positions, so we’re still trying to see who meshes well together, and who has that communication and that bond,” Stanton said.

Joining Miller in the infield will be senior Lexi Moky, sophomore Kayla Moky, junior Makaela Chavez and junior Caitlin Eckert. Junior Ashley McCance and freshman Hailey Morland can play both infield and outfield while junior Natalie Etheridge and senior Jessica Howard will play outfield.

“I definitely feel our defense is going to be strong,” Lexi Moky said. “Our hitting will have a lot more variety this year and we have more leftys, so we’ll have a good mix.”

Junior Emiley Zegar and freshman Rebecca Pieroni will share time behind the plate, with freshman Annie Scaramuzzi and sophomore Hannah Gentry on the mound for the Panthers.

“They’re both left-handed, so we’re excited about that,” Stanton said of her pitchers. “They’re different. They have different techniques and different pitches they can bring, so they will balance each other out nicely.”

Oswego is working to build off of last year’s 13-20 finish, and the season gets underway Thursday at Naperville North. The Panthers will face West Aurora in their home opener on Monday at 11 a.m.
