Olczyk stresses teamwork in talk

By MATT SCHURY mschury@kendallcountynow.com School District 308 teachers and staff received a 45-minute pep talk from former Chicago Blackhawks star center Eddie Olczyk this past Friday at Oswego East High School.

The district’s more than 2,000 teachers and staff packed the gymnasium at Oswego East High School to hear Olczyk during the district’s annual back-to-school convocation gathering.

District teachers and students returned to class to start the new school year this past Monday.

The Hall of Fame Hockey player grew up in south suburban Palos Heights and attended Brother Rice High School on Chicago’s south side. He currently does color commentary for the team’s TV broadcasts.

Olczyk told the audience he tries to teach the game of hockey during broadcasts.

“Hopefully you learn a little bit about something. I try to tell the story, not be the story,” he said. “I love the game and I owe everything I have to the game of hockey.”

He said discipline was an important part of his life as a young person and something he has taught his own children.

“I had a lot of discipline in my life both at home, at school and at the ice rink,” he said.

he village of Oswego’s Cultural Arts Commission played host to local artists in a new, interactive outdoor art festival, Art Off the Rails, Sunday on Main Street in the village’s downtown.

Admission was free and all artwork was for sale.

A highlight of the event was Shaun Hays, the Chicago Chalk Champ, creating a one-of-a-kind 3D artwork on Main Street. Entertainment for the event was provided by Real Women Bellydance, Hudson Crossing and students from Fox River Academy of Music.

The County Board hired Scott Koeppel of Bloomington to the position during a special board meeting last Thursday. The vote to approve Koeppel was split, 7-2, with board member Bob Davidson and Dan Koukol casting the two “no” votes.

Board member Elizabeth Flowers was absent from the meeting.

Jeff Wilkins, the county’s administrator, said Koeppel’s base salary is about $90,000 not including any benefits he chooses including dental, vision and health insurance or the IMRF pension program.

Koeppel will start Aug. 24.

Wilkins added that Koeppel was “an excellent candidate” because of his experience working with coun-

ty and municipal government.

“Definitely a well rounded candidate,” Wilkins said.

Stan Laken, the county’s former technology director, retired earlier this month. He had been with the county for 14 years. Laken said he thought Koeppel would be a good fit for Kendall County and supported the board’s deciScott sion to hire him.

Koeppel Koeppel, 35, currently works in McLean County as the county’s assistant IT director and manages about 14 people.

He graduated from Illinois State University with a degree in information technology. His first job was with the city of Bloomington as the support specialist for the city’s fire department. He then went to

Livingston County, where he became a support specialist for the county. He noted that he reported to the County Board in that position and was their first IT person.

“I’m looking forward to helping out,” he said. “I think this is a great, growing place.”

After the meeting, Koeppel said maintaining his department with the uncertainty of Illinois’ budget will be the biggest issue for him.

“That’s something that could be changing frequently, so not knowing what’s going to come from the state is the biggest hurdle,” he said.

Budget issues were also the reason Koukol and Davidson said they couldn’t support the hire.

Davidson said that he would have liked to see the top two or three candidates before the County Board. He added that he took issue with the hiring procedure.

“We’re the ones [who are] going to do the hiring and that’s the way it’s always been,” he said.

Koukol said he also couldn’t support the new hire.

“Originally when this position was going to become open I was hoping we could keep it open a little bit longer with our financial outlook and our budget the way it looks,” Koukol said. “I think this guy is a great guy just because of the input I got from my colleagues.”

Board member Jeff Wehrli countered that the position was too important to go unfilled.

“There are a lot of different ways to trim the budget but I don’t believe one of them would be not hiring a new IT director,” he said.

“We have already spent some time without leadership in several other areas and it’s not the greatest feeling in the world.”

He has lived in Oswego for nine years and was at home when he John Groth checked the winning Lucky Day Lotto numbers on the Illinois Lottery website.

“When I saw that my numbers matched, my heart started pounding and I had to sit down,” he said.

He said he plans to pay bills and invest for retirement with his winnings. Groth purchased his ticket at Speedway on U.S. Route 34 at Wolf’s Crossing Road. The retailer received a

bonus of $10,500, one percent of the prize amount, for selling a winning ticket.

Official: Appearance State’s attorney Weis to will not cost taxpayers seek fourth term in office

jetheredge@shawmedia.com Former Chicago Blackhawks star Ed Olczyk’s keynote address at School District 308’s convocation gathering at Oswego East High Friday morning did not cost school district taxpayers any money, according to Brian Graves, the district’s director of communications and public relations.

Graves said Olczyk’s

appearance fee was “just over” $9,000.

Kluber Architects and Engineers, a firm that has done business with the district, paid $5,000 of the appearance fee, Graves said.

He added the district used the proceeds from purchasing card (P-Card) rebates to cover the balance of the fee.

Graves said numerous other local businesses served as sponsors for the convocation, including Al-

lied First Bank, The Spice Shop, Jersey Mike’s and Sam’s Club.

Many of those firms, he said, provided door prizes for a raffle that was held during the event.

Graves noted the purpose of the convocation is to rally and inspire the district’s teachers for the new school year, which started Monday, Aug. 17.

“The convocation is all about the teachers and our students,” he said.

“The National Hockey League at that particular time, there was only 20 to 25 players that were American born that played,” he said.

“I was given a gift and you all have a gift as well,” he said, adding that he has been inspired by family and friends who were teachers.

Olczyk also reflected on the teachers that were important in his life and helped him get where he is today.

“I’m still thankful for all the teachers that helped me along the way. There was one teacher in particular at Brother Rice High School, Doc Matthias, that for some reason took a liking to Eddie Olczyk,” he recalled.

“What you all do on a daily basis is so important to young people,’ he continued. “And it’s just not the teachers that come into contact with the students each and every day, it’s the people that work in the lunch room, the people that work in the office – you’re all part of the big team obviously and this is a great team here.”

He added that just walking out to speak he felt that the district has a great team.

“I can just feel that as I walked in I stuck my head in really quick and saw some Blackhawk fans over here and they gave me a quick little wave,” he said.

“I could just feel the energy and you are a team and I learned this as a young person … everybody’s spot on the totem pole is a lit-

He told the audience that they needed to challenge themselves to become better every day.

“You got to do two things when you have a role – accept and execute – every day; to challenge yourself; to challenge the people you work with; to challenge your students; to challenge the school board,” he said. “In the elevator of life we all ascend to different heights when you think about it – personally, professionally,” he said.

“And as you ascend and you continue to move on in that elevator of life, I ask you to not forget about those people that you helped or helped you or worked with or work alongside,” he said.

Olczyk also stressed the importance of direct interaction in every day life.

“I’m talking about from person to person – not sitting there texting or email I’m saying talking to somebody, looking them in the eye shaking their hand, understanding who they are, showing them respect

– we need more of that in society,” he said. “We need more of that.”

“Don’t forget where you came from,” he said.

“Don’t forget the people that helped you along the way. I could just speak to team, I could just speak to family.”

Olczyk said he does about six to 10 events a year where he speaks to high school and junior high students, talking to them about peer pressure.

He explained that he only drank purposely twice in his life. He said that he has people make fun of him and attack him for not drinking but he stood by his choice.

“I choose to not drink in my life, I choose to not do drugs in my life. I drank twice on purpose in my life – once when I was 7 years old sitting on my father’s lap. I think spit a Wiedemann’s or an Old Style all over my dad and then in 1994 when I was a member of the New York Rangers and won a Stanley Cup. My teammates forced me to have a sip out of Lord Stanley,” he said. “That’s just me – I choose to live that way and I had peer pressure just like we all did.”

DREAMING OF A NEW COLOR?

mschury@kendallcountynow.com Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis announced this week he intends to seek a fourth term of office. Weis, a Republican who has been state’s attorney since 2006, said he will run in the Republican primary election next March.

Weis won a hotly contested election nine years ago against Yorkville attorney Boyd Ingemunson to fill out the remainder of then-state’s attorney Tim McCann’s term.

McCann vacated the seat in 2005 when he was named an associate circuit court judge.

Weis won re-election twice more in 2008 and 2012 but has not been challenged in either the primary or general elections.

“We run every election like there is going to be one and obviously if someone decides to do so, we will address that individual candidate,” he said, adding that he didn’t want to see the campaign go negative if someone else entered the race.

“Personally I’m always of the opinion that you run your campaign how you run your life, and I have to live with every decision that I make,” Weis said.

Weis earned a Bachelor of Science degree from North Central College in 1994 and went on to law school where he earned his Juris Doctorate and graduated cum laude from Northern Illinois University College of Law in 1997. He began his legal career in 1997, when he was sworn in as an assistant state’s attorney for Kendall County after working for two years as a law school intern with the office.

Prior to his election as state’s attorney, Weis was the first assistant state’s attorney of Kendall County, where he served as the chief felony prosecutor.

Weis mentioned his time as a prosecutor with Kendall County and his record, both in and out of the courtroom, as reasons why voters should re-elect him.

“I truly enjoy my job, I really do. I don’t necessarily like the political side of things some days, but I truly love what I do as a prosecutor representing those in court that can’t represent themselves,” Weis said. “As long as I have that passion and drive to do it, I want to hopefully continue to do it as long as the voters want me to do it.”

Preventing crime, Weis said, is important, as is getting the word out about the

dangers of drug abuse and domestic violence. He added that there is one type of case that is unfortunately increasing.

“We still see an increase every year over the number of sex crimes against children,” Weis said. “That’s one of those things I wish I could report every year have gone down but unfortunately they haven’t.”

However, Weis added that county residents frequently question him about an investigation that concluded earlier this year into how Kendall County Board members collected mileage and per diem payments for attending Eric Weis meetings.

“The opinions are one way or another and I can respect both opinions on both sides,” Weis said. “You have to do what’s right, you have to investigate it and you have to make a determination.”

He said it was his job to determine if there was a criminal element to the case.

A County Board committee voted earlier this year to settle the amounts board members were asked to pay back, and all those per diems have been paid. Weis said he would like to see the board’s per diem and mileage reimbursement systems changed.

“We have made recommendations … that these changes still need to occur whether or not the County Board members decide that’s a good thing is up to them, and ultimately the voters have to decide if they want those changes,” Weis said. “I hope the board takes action and rectifies this situation so it doesn’t happen again. But until they do, I think the reality is that it will happen again.”

Weis said he also gets asked a lot about the Illinois Supreme Court ruling in favor of local radio station owner Larry Nelson.

The judgment said citizens and the media can file Freedom of Information Act requests with state’s attorney’s offices.

Nelson has been filing the requests with Weis’ office trying to get copies of emails sent by assistant state’s attorneys. Weis denied some of the FOIA requests, saying they couldn’t be filed against his office.

Nelson responded by filing the lawsuit in 2010, which led to the ruling from the Supreme Court. Weis has said that he is complying with the FOIA requests that Nelson keeps filing with his office.

Police said they learned that four suspects in the incident were traveling in a dark-colored vehicle.

Also, police said they received a call at 12:20 p.m. from another subdivision resident that a male had rung the resident’s doorbell and inquired about an address that was not nearby. The resident told police the male was traveling in a dark-colored vehicle.

Police found a vehicle matching the description reported by the residents and learned that Parker was wanted on a Will County warrant.

Mutual Ground office a needed step forward As we reported this past week, Mutual Ground, a nonprofit agency that provides assistance to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in the lower Fox Valley, plans to open a small office inside the Kendall County Courthouse in October.

County State’s Attorney Eric Weis, who has worked to secure the opening of the office, noted that until now local individuals in need of Mutual Ground’s services have had to either phone or drive to the agency’s Aurora office.

The opening of a local office in the courthouse will provide

a secure place for victims to receive necessary services that can help them get their lives back on track.

Though many county residents may not be aware, there is a continuing need for the types of services offered by Mutual Ground here in Kendall County.

We see evidence of that need every week in the incident reports we receive from the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office and local municipal police departments.

For example, in Oswego alone last year village police filed reports on 72 separate cases of

domestic battery and 11 cases involving criminal sexual assault, according to the department’s annual report.

Ironically, at the same time as Weis, County Sheriff Dwight Baird and other county officials are looking forward to the opening of the Mutual Ground office at the courthouse in Yorkville, agency officials are warning that the opening of the office may be delayed due to the continuing stalemate in Springfield over a new state budget.

The state has previously contracted with Mutual Ground to

provide its services to residents of southern Kane County and Kendall Counties for fiscal 2016 at a cost of $679,611. However, the agency reports that it has yet to receive any of those funds.

The non-payment from the state comes on top of its failure to pay the agency the full amount of money it was owed for fiscal 2015.

In addition to the possible delay in the opening of the local office, Mutual Ground officials have already postponed the hiring of an early intervention counselor who would serve children ages up to 5 years old

and are considering other service cutbacks to rein in expenses.

While some taxpayers may shrug at Mutual Ground’s current financial plight, they should remember they will still pay for the cost of domestic violence through increased taxes for other services. We believe taxpayers are best and most economically served when an agency like Mutual Ground can help individuals address their problems through counseling and other services, instead of through their local police department and the court system.

Celebrating 95 years of women’s suffrage In August 1920, the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified and women finally were given the right to vote in all elections, local, state and national. This year, women’s organizations across the nation are marking the 95th anniversary of universal women’s suffrage in the United States.

What many may not realize is that here in Illinois, women had the right to vote, for at least some offices, several years before the rest of the U.S. got up to speed.

It might seem strange to us today that half of the adult citizens of the U.S. and all of the talent they had to offer were once disenfranchised, but that was indeed the case until the Nineteenth Amendment was passed.

In frontier areas, however, the idea of women being able to vote was apparently a little easier to swallow than in the settled East, where religious bigotry had long resulted in the political and economic subjugation of women.

As the frontier moved west, first into the old Northwest Territory, of which Illinois was once part, and then across the Mississippi, the importance of women grew.

Here in Kendall County, for instance, a number of single women and their families settled on the prairie. In 1854, Nancy Hogsett Elliott, a widow with four sons and two daughters, determined to move west from Indianapolis to a place with more opportunity. Elliott eventually settled in the Fox Valley, where she raised her children and carved a living out of the rolling prairie that then made up Kendall County.

When men were absent, it was up to the frontier women to look after things until they returned.

When Capt. David Beebe decided to sail to California, joining the “Forty-Niners” looking for California gold, his wife, Nancy Steward Beebe, stayed behind in North Ridge, Ohio, where she was to run the couple’s farm and look after their children until David returned from the gold fields.

Mrs. Beebe was a determined lady who never let her gender get in the way of her aims in life or doing what she considered the right things to do. While the family lived in Ohio, she served as a postmaster and was also a conductor on the Underground Railroad. After moving to Kendall County with her second husband to join her sons and her brother, Lewis Steward, she wrote poetry, was active in the Underground Railroad here helping escaped slaves get to freedom in Canada, and was an organizer of the local Women’s Christian Temperance Union.

So maybe it was because of that strong streak Western women developed that the right to vote came early in Illinois.

In 1891, Illinois women were given, for the first time, the right to vote for school board members or any other school official except the state superintendent of public instruction and the county superintendent of schools.

Women were not allowed to vote for the state and county superintendents because those offices were specifically enumerated in the 1870 Illinois Constitution, which made no mention of allowing women to vote.

As a result of that, while women could vote for school board members and other locally elected school officials whose offices were not mentioned in the constitution, they could not cast ballots on any other educational propositions, such as tax rate referendums.

In 1894, the Illinois Suffragette Convention persuaded state officials to allow women to hold the kinds of school offices for which they could vote. That year, Lucy Flower, a well-known social worker of the time, became the first woman to hold statewide office here in the Prairie State

Many Americans were opposed to granting women the right to vote. The opposition manifested itself in opposition groups that included the National Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage. Organized in 1911, the group claimed a membership of 350,000 and opposed women’s suffrage, feminism and socialism.

“In frontier areas, however, the idea of women being able to vote was apparently a little easier to swallow than in the settled East ...” when she was elected as a trustee of the University of Illinois.

Then in 1913, Illinois women were given the right to vote for any elected official whose office could be abolished by the General Assembly. The rationale was, again, that those offices were not mentioned in the state constitution and so were fair game for the female underclass.

Finally, on June 10, 1919, Illinois won a three-way tie with Wisconsin and Michigan to be the first states to ratify the Nineteenth Amendment, allowing women to vote for all offices.

In Kendall County, women didn’t waste any time running for local office. In the April 1922 primary election, Ella D. Hill

won the Republican nomination for county treasurer over former sheriff Martin Hextell, 1,495 votes to 1,316. She then went on to win the general election in November.

Two years later, in 1924, Louetta B. Davis won the April Republican primary election for Circuit Court clerk. She also went on to win election the following November.

Then in 1926, Laura Nichols won the GOP nomination for Kendall County treasurer over Frank Crum and Frank Weber.

Nichols polled 1,402 ballots to 1,006 for Crum and 464 for Weber.

While lots of women served as school board members and local officials, it took many more years before females were trusted enough to be elected to statewide office. In 1955, Mrs. Earle Benjamin Searcy of Springfield was appointed to fill the unexpired term of her late husband as State Supreme Court clerk. Mrs. Searcy was subsequently elected to the post, the first woman selected for statewide office in Illinois.

Other women, however, were

elected to other positions of power before that. For instance, Winifred Mason Huck of Chicago was elected congressman-at-large in 1922 to replace her father, William E. Mason, who had died.

Lottie Holman O’Neill of Downers Grove was the first elected female member of the General Assembly, with the voters sending her to the house in 1922.

She served until 1964, with terms both in the Illinois House and Senate.

Today, with numerous female officeholders at the local, state and federal levels, we take women in politics so much for granted that it looks as if Hillary Clinton has a good chance of becoming the first female President of the United States.

It is sobering to recall that within the lifespan of some Kendall County residents, women were forbidden even to vote for those who were making decisions for them.

FORUM Illinois budget impasse threatens safety, prosperity

To the Editor: Home is where we should be able to prosper and feel safe. Home is where I am most comfortable and the spot that I am most likely to defend to my death. Illinois is my home and for most of you reading this, Illinois is your home, too.

Now I ask you, do you want to live and die here? Do you feel safe and prosperous here? Are you comfortable enough to defend Illinois to your death? If your answer is no or you are the least bit hesitant to respond, it is probably connected in some way to the Illinois state budget … or the lack of a state budget.

The governor and the leaders of the Illinois General Assembly have dug their heels in and tossed compromise into the wind. The dust is hitting you and me in the face. Human services providers are choking, trying to stay alive to serve those most at risk in our communities.

This budget impasse is threatening our safety, our prosperity and our comfort. We the people cannot be happy with or passive about that.

Please join me in urging the governor and the General Assembly to act now to resolve their political differences and enact a state budget. Taking no action has terrible consequences for all of us, especially for our fellow citizens at greater risk, including low-income families, children, older adults and persons with disabilities.

Already, community action agencies are reducing staff and hours of operation, cutting energy assistance programs and interventions for the homeless and victims of domestic violence. The longer the budget impasse lasts, the deeper the erosion to human services. Financial reserves will be exhausted, lines of credit will be maxed-out, staff will be laid off, hours and days of operation will be reduced, and finally doors will close.

Last year, home-delivered meals postponed or prevented the institutionalization of more than 87,000 homebound elderly. Adult protective service providers will not have the staff or resources to investigate an estimated 19,000 reports of alleged abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation. Those suffering from mental illnesses may not be able to obtain stabilizing medications. This amounts to “shooting our wounded.”

Let us raise our voices for those who cannot speak for themselves.

Governor Rauner, House Speaker Madigan, Senate President Cullerton and all our elected officials, come to the table of compromise and adopt a budget for the people of Illinois.

The plight of all Illinoisans compels you to do so now.

in Aurora, Southern Kane County and Kendall County who need it. In fiscal year 2015, Mutual Ground was contracted for the same amount of money, but was only paid $669,413, leaving us with a $10,198 shortfall, revealed in the last quarter of the fiscal year.

As of Aug. 1, $0 has been appropriated to domestic and sexual violence services and there is still no Illinois state budget. The Department of Human Services has indicated to Mutual Ground they are unable to reimburse any grant expenditures until there is a final state budget in place. These contracted funds are specifically used for domestic violence and sexual assault counseling, children’s counseling, domestic violence case management, shelter, court services, as well as some administrative costs.

It would take a number of years and significantly higher administrative expenses to build up the kind of fundraising capacity that would allow Mutual Ground to raise an additional $679,000 each year, if that is even possible in the current economic climate. However this amount of funding is miniscule compared to the costs the state would incur as a result of a lack of services for victims of domestic and sexual violence. The state of Illinois has an obligation to help the most vulnerable of us by funding organizations such as Mutual Ground.

Domestic and sexual violence are issues that if left unfunded will affect every other aspect of society.

Law enforcement will have nowhere to send victims of these crimes to find safety and comprehensive services; the criminal justice system will spend time and money attempting to help victims through the system if there is no one to refer them to. It will affect the school systems when children can’t concentrate or are absent from class due to issues happening in their homes. Business will be affected when employee performance suffers and absenteeism increases due to the paralyzing effect these crimes have on people.

Finally, the health care system will be affected due to the increase in hospital visits because of a lack of prevention and intervention provided by agencies such as Mutual

Ground.

Mutual Ground is not just a nonprofit. We are also a business operating to provide a service needed by the community. Mutual Ground employs 47 people and operates three shifts of non-stop service, 24/7, 365 days a year, for people who come through their doors and call the hotline.

Call the governor at 217-782-0244 or 312-814-2121, as well as your local legislators. Let them know how important it is for a budget to be agreed upon in a timely manner that includes domestic and sexual violence funding at a level that is at least consistent with fiscal year 2015.

To the Editor: It could have happened here.

In 2006 and 2007 there was an aggressive push to build a third high school in School District 308.

Superintendent Behlow predicted that the school enrollment by 2012 would be 25,000. Based on previous

yearly growth numbers, in my opinion I found his prediction to be greatly overestimated and I aggressively opposed building the third high school. School District 308 Fast Facts show the enrollment in 2013 was 17,265 and the predicted enrollment for 2015-16 is 18,201 – far below the predicted 25,000. The current total capacity of the schools is 22,700. Building the third high school was estimated at $102 million and revenue to staff the school was also not available in the budget.

Through concerted efforts a new school board was elected in 2011 that thankfully stopped building the new school.

This past week local area news media reported that Lincoln-Way School District 210 voted to close one of the two new schools that it built and opened in 2008 due to a budget deficit. I bring this to the attention of taxpayers of Oswego District 308 because the same thing could have happened here had the third school been built. Lincoln-Way was assuming that residential growth would continue and that the new growth would pay for the buildings; however, the building growth came to a halt in 2008 there as it did here. At that time Lincoln-Way had a $36 million cash reserve which they have now spent, are in deficit spending, and placed on the State Watch List for financially distressed schools.

In 2008 District 308 had no cash reserve, had previous debt including more than $155 million indebtedness for the referendum to build Oswego East and several schools and passed a $450 million referendum for additional schools. Not all of the $450 million referendum was spent, but the school district is still deeply in debt, and bond and interest payments are eating up over 25 percent of the school budget. In the near future, some bonds are coming due, which will further impact taxpayers.

Recently persons elected to the village of Oswego are promoting new development, which will increase the number of students and cause the need for more schools. I caution these new elected officials to consider what has happened at Lincoln-Way before they move forward on encouraging new

development which will impact the schools and taxpayers. Note that Lincoln-Way had a $36 million cash reserve when the downturn began.

Our school district has no cash reserve and is deep in debt. Any new school buildings required will have to be paid directly by the taxpayer.

Looking pretty thin

To the Editor: So the old local leftists Ledger-Sentinel was sold to another local media group from the northern Illinois area, Shaw Media.

The “new” Ledger-Sentinel to be honest is a pretty thin publication.

The new paper feels flimsy and it’s terrible for bird cage liner. It’s basically now a version of the thrifty nickel.

The website kendallcountynow. com is a standard news web page and you can adjust the print size on your computer. Unlike that squinty print paper.

It’s easy to sign up to the comment board and it’s ready for reader input. I’ve already made a comment on a village welcome sign that was stolen. The second crime in this story is the village valued the sign at over $1,300. One has to wonder as to why you need $1,300 “welcome” signs? Those, could be built for much much less in a local high school shop class. Classic example of taxpayer waste.

As we know, raising taxes is the easiest thing for an elected official to do. All they have to do is vote Yes. The hard part, that’s always left to the citizen, who has to reach even deeper into their pockets to extract more personal wealth.

Especially deep, in this progressive land of broken.

Thank you for the opportunity to respond to your questions at askdrwendt@sd308.org. I hope my responses provide answers as School District 308 continues to develop plans to improve academic achievement for over 18,000 students. I received several questions on each of the following topics and I hope the information is helpful.

We are somewhat anxious, Dr. Wendt, at the class size of elementary schools. What is the school district’s policy on elementary class size?

At this time, School District 308 does not have a board-approved policy for elementary class size.

However, we do have expectations of what we consider too large for an elementary setting. Over the past several years, School District 308 has attempted to prevent elementary class sizes of over 30 students.

Class size is a challenging issue in a growing school district. Student mobility is a significant factor, especially in August.

Students moving in and out of the system create scenarios difficult to manage, which includes controlling reasonable class sizes.

For example, historically School District 308 adds over 100 new students between the first day of school and Labor Day. One week in August a class size might be 27; and by mid-September that same classroom can reach 30 or more students.

The opposite situation for us also occurs from time to time. During the first week of school, a particular classroom might have 28 or 29 students, yet within a few weeks student mobility causes that number to decrease to the mid 20s.

We do the best we possibly can under situations out of the control of the school district.

Resources are an important element to managing class size. Budgets are tight and hiring more teachers is not always possible. School District 308 is an advocate for employing teacher assistants when necessary, but again, available revenue is carefully considered.

I believe one of the most challenging parts to this situation is hiring an effective teacher weeks, if not months, into the school year. Finding a teacher is not necessarily the challenge, but recruiting and hiring a quality teacher is not always easy.

Please know that the district’s administrative team works closely with principals to monitor elementary class sizes. Beginning next Friday, my administrative team and I will receive a weekly enrollment update by school and grade. Thank you for asking the question and I trust you will remain informed about this issue and engaged in your child’s education.

Dr. Wendt, what are the next steps for withdrawing from the Special Education

ASK DR. WENDT Dr. Matthew Wendt Cooperative (KCSEC)? Is it going to happen and has the timeline changed?

There has been incredible work by many people over the past six or so months. I am pleased to be able to communicate that the timeline to withdraw from the Kendall County Special Education Cooperative remains in place.

Our withdrawal from the KCSEC will occur on June 30, 2016. Beginning July 1, 2016, School District 308 will employ all required special education staff members and manage its own special education programming.

The next steps include an update to the Board of Education, which should occur in September. In addition, I am very pleased with the scheduled parent meetings. We recognize the importance of parent input, collaboration and being a true partner with parents of special needs children. I believe School District 308 will continue hosting parent information meetings even after leaving the KCSEC. Open lines of communication and being positioned to respond to parent questions and concerns are imperative to the type of partnership all desire.

Negotiations and transferring all licensed employees into School District 308 as part of the approved agreement will begin later this school year. We believe addressing all other employee groups will need to occur before March 2016.

The KCSEC Board of Directors for the recently approved the broker/realtor to sell the Yorkvillebased office facility and adjoining lot. I am hopeful the sale of property will occur prior to Dec. 31. I am looking forward to School District 308 moving forward with withdrawing from the KCSEC and managing our own special education programming in less than one year.

The Comprehensive Plan is scheduled to be presented to the state’s Advisory Council in December 2015. Parent meetings this fall will assist the school district in writing, editing and making necessary adjustments to the Comprehensive Plan. LEDGER–SENTINEL The Mill Street bridge spanning the Fox River in downtown Montgomery will be closed to all traffic beginning today, Thursday, Aug. 20, through Oct. 16 to allow contractors for the village to complete maintenance work on the structure.

During the construction period, Mill Street will be closed from River Street to Ill. Route 25 and all traffic will be required to follow the posted detour route.

Traffic will be detoured via the Ashland Avenue bridge to the north.

According to a statement issued by the village, the work on the Mill Street bridge

will consist of deck repairs and painting.

The project will include installation of a bridge deck latex concrete overlay, structural repair of concrete and application of a concrete coating.

The statement adds, “Your cooperation and patience are greatly appreciated and please remember to exercise additional caution when in the vicinity of the construction area.”

The Mill Street bridge was constructed by contractors for the Illinois Department of Transportation in 1984 and then deeded to the village. As a result, the village is responsible for maintaining the bridge.

The Oswego Township Road District is offering monthly brush pickup on the weeks of Aug. 24, Sept. 21 and Oct. 26.

This service is offered to provide residents of unincorporated Oswego Township, including the Boulder Hill and the Shore Heights subdivisions, with removal of branches trimmed from trees on their property.

Brush must be placed at the curb no later than 7 a.m. on the Monday of the pickup week. Limbs need to be less than five inches in diameter and longer than two feet. (It is best if the length is longer; do not cut into small pieces.)

Warrant arrest Grace M. Rodriguez, 28, of the 0-99 block of Springdale Road, Boulder Hill, was found to be wanted on a warrant on a charge of failure to appear on a traffic offense in Kendall County court, Kendall County sheriff’s police said. Police responded to the scene of a car accident involving a pedestrian at about 11:45 a.m. Aug. 12 at Long Beach and Winrock roads in Boulder Hill

and arrested Rodriguez, who was driving, according to the report.

Rodriguez also was charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian in the crosswalk, the report said. The pedestrian, Charles A. Rosseter, 68, of the 0-99 block of Sheffield Road, Boulder Hill, was taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora for treatment.

Road, Na-Au-Say Township south of Oswego, Kendall County sheriff’s police said. According to the report, Salgado Saucedo was driving 95 mph in a 55-mph zone.

Domestic incident Curtis Holliday Jr., 41, of the 12200 block of Mitchell Drive, Plano, was charged with domestic battery in connection with an incident at about 2:50 a.m. Aug. 15 in the 12200 block of Mitchell Drive in Little Rock Township, Kendall County sheriff’s police said. According to reports, Holliday is a accused of striking a male family member.

DUI charge Derek T. Devivo, 24, of the 900 block of Fawn Ridge Drive, Yorkville was charged with DUI after a rollover crash at about 5:20 a.m. Sunday in the 1600 block of Route 25 in Oswego Township, Kendall County sheriff’s police said. According to reports, Devivo was taken to Rush-Copley Medical center for minor injuries and was charged after being released from the hospital. Devivo also was charged with improper lane usage and operating an uninsured motor vehicle, reports said.

Speeding ticket Delia A. Salgado Saucedo, 21, of Cicero, was charged with speeding at about 1:30 a.m. Aug. 14 on Route 126 and Old Ridge

Park land will go to township SHAW MEDIA The Oswegoland Park District will soon be supporting the Oswego Township through a proposed property transfer.

Challenged by diminishing open space in the existing township cemetery, the Oswego Township approached the park district about Pfund Park. The park property is adjacent to the cemetery and is owned and maintained by the park district.

Pfund Park was deeded to the park district in 2002 in the will of Jack Pfund. The undeveloped park is situated on approximately 1.4 acres of green space on Pfund Court off Route 34 near Ill. Route 71 in Oswego.

With no plans to develop the park, and in light of the current needs of the town-

ship, a property transfer agreement was drafted by the agencies. The agreement, which stipulates that the property may not be transferred or sold by the township, requires a vote by the boards of both agencies.

Upon approval, the land will be transferred to the township to expand the cemetery and a permanent memorial will be installed on the property to honor the donation of the land by the Pfund family.

For a property transfer price of $1, the township will be able to use the undeveloped land to meet their needs for expansion. The township voted to approve the transfer during the Tuesday, Aug. 11, board meeting. The park district will follow with a vote during their Thursday, Aug. 20, board meeting.

Wolves’ talent rises with strong junior class

By CHRISTINE BOLIN DASCHER cbolin@kendallcountynow.com The Oswego East boys’ soccer team is already optimistic for the 2015 season.

After finishing 2014 with a 8-12-1 mark, head coach Steve Szymanski knows the Wolves have a ton of potential to improve from last year.

“We have a very talented group, top to bottom,” Szymanski said. “Last year, we weren’t very deep.

In some games we only played 12 kids. This year, we can go 15-16 deep and be pretty comfortable with that. Our depth is definitely a lot better. The talent, top to bottom is a lot better.

Injuries were an issue for us last year, so hopefully, we’ll stay healthy.”

Oswego East is young,

with only four seniors in goalkeeper Jake Leonard, midfielder Nick Huerter, defender Arnold Arevalo (three-year starter) and defender/midfielder Cristian Cepeda.

The Wolves are junior-heavy with 12 on the roster. They are starting defender Spencer Moriarty, midfielders Victor Cuevas, Arteen Rasti, Andres Castillo, Nikhil Mohanty, Alec Niessner, Tim Mackey, midfielder/defender Mike Bozett, midfielder/ forward Jackson Frazor, defender/goalie Adam Jenkins and defenders Chris Niessner and Kyle Orive.

The four sophomores – and perhaps where a lot of the scoring will come from – are forwards Michael Waclaw (All-Conference in the Southwest Prairie; nine goals, six assists), Ryan

Aten (four goals) and Manuel Magana and midfielder Dawson Johnson. “[Waclaw, Aten and Magana] are three of our best players. They do a nice job,” Szymanski said.

“They are going to be on the field doing most of our scoring, hopefully. If they are able to share the wealth in scoring and assists, we’ll be pretty good. They showed their abilities in the summer.”

Plainfield South won the conference title last year, followed by Plainfield North. Oswego East was tied for third at 4-3.

Szymanski thinks the league title is up for grabs this season, meaning there is no clear-cut favorite.

“I think its pretty open,” said Szymanski, who is entering his ninth season as head coach and 10th

“Plainfield North might be up there, Oswego, and we might be up there as well. ...

Oswego boys golf team swings into season Compton, Lee back on tour for Panthers

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com With several big invites to kick off the opening week of the 2015 season, the Oswego boys’ golf team is officially beginning its sprint to the finish.

The Panthers’ season opener at Whitetail Ridge was canceled on Monday due to lightening, eliminating the Plainfield North Invite. Oswego toured Blackberry Oaks on Tuesday for the Panther Stableford before competing at Broken Arrow for the 18-hole Lemont Invite on Friday.

Tuesday’s event was canceled with two holes remaining for Oswego after inclement weather rolled in that afternoon.

“Golf is interesting because we start right away.

There’s only so many days on the calendar to get everything in, so it’s not like we have a week of preparation,” said Oswego head coach Chad Pohlmann, who begins his sixth year with the Panthers. “We

have matches two or three times every week until sectionals, so the golf season is definitely a sprint; it’s not a marathon. Kids have to be playing and be prepared as tryouts begin. It’s definitely a challenge.”

After a three-day tryout last week, Oswego’s nine-player roster was completed on Friday with a pair of returning Class 3A sectional qualifiers in senior Matt Compton and junior Mason Lee. “Matt is a senior who will mostly likely be our No. 1 throughout the year, and he had a nice season last year. He’s improved and he’s worked really hard as his game,” Pohlmann said.

“Those two guys have a good, all-around game.”

Andrew Hiller, Michael Latzke and Reilly Gillette round out the senior class while juniors Tommy Falcone, Andrew Mitchell, Craig Schlegel and Kobe Taylor make up the newcomers on the roster.

“Craig Schlegel played in every match as a sophomore

on JV and he’s a kid who put a ton of time into his game.

He can be in our top four for sure. He drives the ball really well and he’s a good iron player,” Pohlmann said.

“Kobe Taylor had a nice season as a JV player and has worked really hard at his game. He’s a good ball striker. Our top seven players at tryouts all had good scores in the 80s, so that’s a good sign to start the season.”

Oswego will open the Southwest Prairie Conference season on Aug. 31, hosting Minooka at Blackberry Oaks and the September sprint ends with the SPC meet at Blackberry on Sept.

“It’ll be interesting to see how it all comes together, but if our top guys can compete and play well, we could be in the mix for a top-three spot. The past few years we’ve finished in the top third of conference, but if we play as we’re capable of, we may be able to sneak in there.”

“We’ve got our top four guys from last year back, so we’re looking forward to having them back,” Vera said. “We’re going to be pretty heavy with seniors this year. Max and Adam were part of the I-Tour this summer. It’s basically a series of tournaments for our conference teams and play on the conference courses throughout the summer. Max was in first place and had a really good summer. Adam played a lot and works at Fox Bend, Jack and Keegan are best friends and play golf together all the time.”

Oswego East held an open tryout when the season got underway on Aug. 12, and several newcomers made a good first impression.

Sophomore Sam Behnke shot an 87 at tryouts and could make an impact on the varsity roster in addition to seniors Riley Carlson and Tyler Jackson.

“There are other guys who played last year and have to get their averages down, but those are our main guys this year,” Vera said.

Oswego East will open SPC play on Aug. 31 against Plainfield East at Wedgewood Golf Course, and will then face a grueling September schedule that ends with the SPC meet on Sept.

The schedule slated the Wolves for a busy start this week, but Mother Nature had different plans and Monday’s season opener at the Plainfield North Invite was canceled by lightning. Oswego East opened the season Tuesday at the annual Panther Stableford at Blackberry Oaks, but the event was called by inclement weather before it was completed.

Now, the Wolves will hope for better weather at Orchard Valley for Thursday’s meet against West Aurora.

“I like the schedule the way it’s set up,” said Oswego East head coach Jim Vera, who enters his fourth year at the helm. “It’s not really one of those sports where there’s a lot of strategy or drill work to do.

You can tell the kids who come into the season in the 80s have been playing and the kids that are in the high 90s and 100s are kids who didn’t play all summer and this is the first time they’re picking up the clubs.”

Senior Max Behnke returns as a 2014 Class 3A sectional qualifier, shooting an 85 at the Oswego Regional to advance last fall, while senior Adam Densberger, a two-time Southwest Prairie All-Conference finisher, gives Oswego East a strong one-two punch.

Seniors Jack Norris and Keegan Schropp also return after providing solid scores for the Wolves last year.

Summer experience sets up Panthers for success

By CHRISTINE BOLIN DASCHER cbolin@kendallcountynow.com Thanks to a productive summer, the Oswego boys soccer team has that extra push it needs to have a solid season in 2015.

“We had more participation and they played more games together,” Oswego second-year head coach Brian Falli said. “The continuity is there. We still have some things we need to fine tune, but there’s a lot more speed and athletic ability. Our fitness testing was fantastic – we are in very, very good shape and it’s going to allow us to put the pressure on.”

“We had most of our team here for the summer so it feels like

we’ve been playing together for a while now,” Oswego senior Luke Moran added. “We already have the team chemistry going.”

Oswego finished 5-14-2 overall and 3-4 in the Southwest Prairie Conference last year.

“We had trouble scoring, but we didn’t give up a lot of goals last year,” Falli said. “We lost numerous games by one or two goals and were pretty much in most of our games – there were maybe a couple of blowouts – but that was early in the season, when younger guys were trying to come together.”

There are five seniors with the Panthers this year: midfielders JC Mora and Moran, along with

defenders Steven Strange and Nathan Montgomery and forward Brandon Beers.

The roster is heavy on juniors, with that group comprising starting goalie Nick Kearns, forwards Ryan Baumann, Alfredo Brenes, Adrian Veseli, Carlos Contreras, Mitch Kearby, midfielders Ryan Martin, Truman Crafts, Dieter Lehman, forward Alfredo Brenes, defenders Joey Kirkwood, Kolby Frye and Ryan Rathman and defender/midfielder Grant Swanigan.

The five sophomores are two goalies, Osvaldo Salazar and Scott Zacker, forward Julian Ibarra, defender Jesse Corneliusen and midfielder Blake Biery.

“There’s a lot of youth with varsity experience. However, those minutes were limited, so some of them will be stepping into bigger roles,” Falli said. “I think a lot of the younger guys saw the older guys, and this is the group that came in as freshmen that are now juniors that had a good freshman year. We brought them up and kind of molded them their sophomore year, so we are hoping their junior and senior years are really going to take off.”

The Panthers start the season on Aug. 29 hosting Naperville Central before entering Southwest Prairie Conference action in the second game of the year at Plainfield Central on Sept. 1.

Oswego will once again be a part of the Pepsi Showdown between Sept.12-27.

Oswego has to wait until Oct. 13 for the final conference outing of the year, against rival Oswego East, before capping the regular season at Glenbard South on Oct. 14. Class 3A regional action begins later in the week.

Plainfield South won the SPC, followed by Plainfield North. Oswego’s three wins put it in a tie for fifth place.

“All the games we lost [in conference] were from small mistakes,” Mora said. “We just have to fix those mistakes and be able to finish on every opportunity we have.”

Woman, horse train for show jumping competition in Belgium

aylor Flury has a horse named Catania Saflo Z. “I did not breed her,” Flury said. “I got her when she was like 4 months of age.”

Since Flury did not breed her, she did not name her either. But she did give her a nickname.

“My nickname for her is Minnie Mouse,” she said. “If she’s fresh, she’ll squeal like a mouse so we called her Minnie Mouse.”

Minnie Mouse is 5 years old, which is young for a show jumper.

“She’s 5; most Olympic horses are 8 or 9,” Flury said. “She’s leading the country for the 5-year-olds.

“She’s just a really special horse, she’s got a big heart and she wants to be the winner.”

The same could be said for Flury herself.

Since she was a young girl, Taylor, a resident of rural Kendall County, wanted to train horses to be Olympic competitors in the show jumping competition. But when she was 15, that dream was threatened by what ended up being a medical issue she had since birth that had been misdiagnosed.

“I was born with a condition called chiari malformation. When I was like 9 or so, I was misdiagnosed as bipolar manic depressive,” Flury said. “I went to see a neurologist at 15.”

That neurologist pulled her off the medication she was on for the misdiagnosis and ordered an MRI where the medical issue was discovered.

“It’s where [my] cerebellum descended into my spinal cord,” she said. “My cerebellum went down to my second vertebra. It was basically killing my cerebellum.”

Flury did not have to have surgery, but chose to when the doctor explained the risks to her.

“My surgeon told me you don’t have to have the

Catania Saflo Z surgery, but if you hit your head the wrong way, you can cut off the [cerebellum],” she said. “My brain was so damaged I should barely have been able to walk. Mine was white because it wasn’t getting circulation.”

So Flury was 15 years old and was recovering from brain surgery. The recovery left her in the hospital for months, but also gave her a new outlook on life.

“The surgery was the best thing that ever happened to me,” she said.

“When you live in the hospital for six months, you realize it all comes into perspective. It was like a 9-month process before I could even basically leave the house.”

Janet Flury, Taylor Flury’s mother, explains how that changed things for her daughter.

“When Taylor had her brain surgery, it really only shifted us onto a different course,” she said.

“The horse industry breeders as a whole were really encouraging, helped her to realize success.

“When she had her surgeries, I think at that time she thought she might never ride again and if that was the case, she wanted to be able to breed horses.”

So the breeder, rider, Olympic dreamer was born. Today, at age 24, Flury rides at AliBoo Farm stable near Minooka. Her schedule is intense as she continues to pursue all her

everyday responsibilities.

She wakes up around 5:30 a.m.

“I am very hands-on,” she said. “I am the first one out there so I feed them, I turn them outside in the pastures. I clean their stalls.”

After she cares for the horses, it is time to exercise them.

“Usually by 8 a.m., I am riding. I ride from 8 to 4,” she said.

“On a typical day, I will ride anywhere from 8 to 11 horses, 30 to 45 minutes per horse.”

She said the younger horses get a little shorter workout than the older ones.

“I usually am done riding by 4:30, so then I am on to my next job: paperwork, talking to customers and then I am also going to school.”

Flury is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business.

“I have two semesters of school left, I am taking 14 credit hours,” she said.

“The worst part is that I am a perfectionist.”

Since she cares for and

shows the horses as well as competing with them, she chose to attend an online university so she could continue to study no matter where she was. This was a blessing because she is trying to raise money to take her horse to Belgium to compete in the Young Horse Showjumping World Championships for horses aged 5 to 7 years. The competition is in September. To fund the trip – which requires getting both Flury and her horse Catania Saflo Z to Belgium – Flury has set up a Go-

FundMe page. As of Aug. 7, she has raised $6,955 of the $30,000 she hopes to raise.

The desire to go to the competition, which is an invite-only event and only two Americans per age group receive invitations every year, is to prove to the world that an American can breed, train and compete with a horse and win.

Joyce Ann (Voga) Bankson, 67, of Lake In The Hills, Illinois (formerly of Newark, IL) passed away August 12, 2015, at home after a courageous battle with cancer and her loving husband Terrye at her side.

She was born September 19, 1947, in Morris, IL, the daughter of Arlyn and Verdell (Sebby) Voga. Joyce grew up in the Newark area and graduated from Newark High School. She was employed at Union Special in Huntley, IL, for 38 years. Joyce married Terrye Bankson June 11, 2004.

Flights to Washington, D.C. He enjoyed a successful career as a sales representative and was a member of the Plano American Legion Post #395. His friendly and outgoing nature and love of the outdoors combined perfectly with his devotion to his golf game and socializing with his many friends. Frank was an excellent woodworker and among his numerous creations were the toys that he annually made for children at Christmas.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle who will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Sandy was united in marriage in Yorkville, IL on May 11, 1974, to Clarence Holdiman and they spent the next 41 happy years together. She was a very active and lifetime member of the United Methodist Church of Plano in Plano, IL. Sandy was also a very active member of both the Women’s Auxiliary of the Yorkville American Legion Post #489 and Women of the Moose Chapter #1059 in Sandwich, IL. Sandy had a true servant’s heart and was always willing to help others in any way that she could. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt who will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Lynn was blessed with two children, Ricky and Sadye. She was a loving and supportive mother. Lynn was also a proud grandma to two granddaughters, Rilynn and Breckyn. She cher-

ished every minute spent with her children and grandchildren.

Lynn worked for Optimae in Chariton, Iowa, helping disabled individuals in the community to thrive. She was an avid gardener and loved to work in her garden.

She also loved all animals and enjoyed having pets around.

Keith Wheeler (R-Oswego) is accepting applications from interested parents, educators and community members to serve on his Education Advisory Council serving families in Illinois’ 50th District, which includes portions of Aurora, Batavia, Campton Hills, Elburn, Geneva, Montgomery, Oswego, Plano, St. Charles, Sugar Grove and Yorkville.

Wheeler’s Education Advisory Council will hold quarterly meetings throughout the year, with the first to be scheduled for September.

Specifically, Wheeler is looking for community members interested in serving on one of the following committees to advise him on state/local

According to reports, McWilliams is accused of taking a glass vase filled with cash from a residence in the 400 block of Sudbury Circle, Oswego. A warrant has been issued.

• A Sandwich man is facing charges of harassment by telephone and harassment through electronic communication in connection with an incident involving a Plano woman, Kendall County Court documents said.

According to reports, Seth D. Orczykowski, 26, of the 300 block of Wilshire Drive, is accused of posting obscene comments on a social media website and linking the victim’s account to a video of herself that she had earlier given him. He also is accused of making numerous calls and sending text messages to the victim’s phone, reports said.

• Evette H. Munoz, 35, of the 1400 block of Andover Drive, Aurora, was charged with criminal damage to government-supported property on Aug. 3, according to Kendall County Court documents.

According to reports, Munoz is accused of damaging a 40-inch flat-screen television belonging to the Kendall County Sheriff’s Department. A Sept. 16 court date was set.

• Michael A. Najar, 42, of the 5700 block of Route 34, Oswego, was charged with attempted unlawful failure to register as a sex offender, Kendall County Court documents said. According to reports, Najar failed to register with the Kendall County Sheriff’s Department in accordance with provisions of the Child Sex Offender Registration Act, which requires offenders to register every 90 days.

Sheriff reminds motorists to use caution in school zones SHAW MEDIA Many of the schools in Kendall County are back in session. The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind motorists to use caution and allow extra time in their commute due to an increase in traffic. School zone speed limits of 20 mph are in effect on school days, during school hours, when children are present.

If you are cited for speeding in a school zone, which carries a minimum $200 fine, the law does not allow court supervision.

Cellular phone use and texting are not authorized on any roadway and are especially dangerous in a school zone. Sheriff’s depu-

ties will be increasing patrols and enforcement in school zones during this time.

Crisis Line seeks volunteers SHAW MEDIA The Crisis Line of the Fox Valley is looking for candidates for an upcoming fall training session.

Illinois’ most vulnerable populations have been negatively impacted by the cutting of programs and services. This has led to increased levels of stress, anxiety and depression for individuals in our community and has translated into greater need for Crisis Line

Wet summer could be Anniversary: J. Robert and Marilyn Constantine problem for tomatoes “Gardeners are wondering if they are going to get a crop of red, ripe tomatoes because of the frequent rains across the state,” says Kelly Allsup, University of Illinois horticulture educator. “If you suspect disease, there are few signs to look for and what you can do about it.”

Septoria leaf spot is the most common of all the tomato diseases. The disease symptoms begin mid to late summer and start off as dark leaf spot the size of a pencil tip, surrounded by a yellow halo. The smaller spots advance to dark brown lesions with a purple border with lighter-colored centers.

This fungal disease attacks leaves, stems and sepals (the outer leaves of the flower) and spares the fruit. However, diseased and damaged leaves can cause fruit abortion and expose fruit to sunscald.

Early blight’s initial symptoms are small, dark, round spots (larger than Septoria leaf spots) that advance to reveal dark, brown concentric lesions. This fungal disease starts on the seeds or transplants and causes yellowing, dead leaf edges, and leaf drop. Leaves, stems and fruit are affected. The fruit has the same concentric ridges, which look like leather. In addition to tomatoes, peppers and eggplant can be infected.

To control leaf spot diseases on tomatoes, horticulturists recommend a two- to three-year crop rotation when the disease has been detected and removing infected plants to prevent fur-

ther spread.

Good cultural practices include the following: proper plant spacing and staking to ensure good air movement; reducing humidity by removing weeds; and mulching the soil. To prevent the spread of fungal diseases, do not work in the garden while the plants are wet.

Fungal pathogens can live in the soil for three to four years. All plant debris must be composted or tilled into the soil and all stakes and garden tools should be disinfected with alcohol or bleach solution. It is important to always find reputable sources of seeds as they, too, can be infected with leaf spot.

If fungicide sprays are going to be used, they should be used as a preventative treatment. Before deciding to do a curative spray, understand that leaf loss can be at 50 percent before there will be a loss in yield. To further prevent the spread, University of Illinois recommends a weekly spray of chemicals with the following active ingredients: chlorothalonil, copper, mancozeb and Maneb. These names will be listed on the label of the chemical container. Be sure to read the label and follow instructions exactly to achieve optimal control.

Why should Peter need to warn the “elect” to be “sober” or “alert” about Satan if they could never fall? How can the devil be an “adversary” to those who are once saved always saved” If the elect are eternally secure with no possibility of falling from grace, what is Satan going to “devour”?

What does God say about this man-made doctrine of once saved, always saved? A child of God can deny the faith (1 Timothy 5:8, 12). The Spirit said a child of God can fall away from the faith (1 Timothy 4:1). Paul writes Timothy again stating that men “have gone astray from the truth” (2 Timothy 2:18). We are saved by grace, we have an opportunity to be obedient to His Word that we do not deserve, but because of His grace we can be saved if we obey His Word. But we can fall from grace because we did not continue to be obedient to His Word. “You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.” (Galatians 5:4). A Christian can be “carried away by the error of the wicked” (2 Peter 3:17).

Yellow jackets are the ones that bother us the most during outdoor events, as they like to snack on the same foods we do. Sweet pop is a favorite.

One trick you might try is to actually feed them starting two or three days ahead of the event in an area well away from the picnic. They get used to finding an easy meal and it will take quite a while before zeroing in on the meal you have for the picnicgoers. Yellow jackets can sting repeatedly.

The next most likely to be ready to sting are the paper nest building wasps and hornets. They will leave you alone if you leave them alone, but will certainly sting if provoked.

Any of these insects will protect themselves when threatened and do so in great numbers.

These insects will typically die off in the fall with enough overwintering adults to start again the following year. Adults overwinter singularly in cracks and crevices and in naturally occurring spots in nature.

Lesser-known stinging insects include carpenter

bees (only the female when disturbed), found tunneling in wood and the giant cicada killer that only really stings its prey.

When these stinging insects pose a real threat to humans, control measures are warranted. Treating a nest can be very dangerous, so be well prepared and have a buddy system in place! (As always, read and follow label instructions.) If you just have found the nest and have not been bothered all summer, let nature take its course.

Those that have strong allergic reactions to a sting should talk with the family doctor about potential treatments.

All of these stinging insects are important to the insect world, our ecosystem and our food chain.

BRIEF Diabetes support group begins Aug. 25 at OSC

The Illinois Department of Public Health reports more than 827,000 adults in Illinois have been diagnosed with diabetes. Management of the disease requires lifestyle changes that can challenge patients and caregivers alike, but they are easier to make with education and support.

In August, University of Illinois Extension and the Oswego Senior Center will begin a new session of the “Living Well with Diabetes” support group.

“The overall goal is to offer social support and community education around the topic of lifestyle changes associated with a diabetes diagno-

sis,” said Laura Barr, University of Illinois Extension nutrition and wellness educator. “Meeting others facing similar situations can ease what may feel overwhelming now. Once patients and families feel informed, they are more comfortable with the nutrition and routine adjustments.”

The diabetes support group meets from 1 to 3 p.m., beginning on Tuesday, Aug. 25. This group will use the “Living Well with Diabetes” workbook.

While there is a lot of summer left, now is the time homeowners are discovering nests of a variety of flying, swarming and potentially stinging wasps and hornets in the home landscape. In nearly all cases, homeowners have been unaware that a nest even exists in the yard until one day when foliage starts to change color or the nest itself grows in size and becomes much more visible.

The more common paper nest building wasp builds a flat nest under the eve of the home or near the gable on the end of the home. Another wasp that can easily be spotted by the nest it builds is the mud dauber. You will see singular or multiple rows where mud was used to build the tunnels containing the eggs and food supply.

The bald face hornet builds a much more elaborate nest usually found in the canopy of a tree. Their nest resembles a mottled grey football. Once in a while a nest will be found attached to the home in an area seldom seen. Farther down on the ground, yellow jackets like to nest in abandoned rodent holes and runs in the soil beside building voids, cracks and crevices, which can be commonly found on homes.

September canning presentation set at Aurora Farmers Market SHAW MEDIA Whether you grow your own, or frequent your local farmers market, there is nothing like the taste of fresh, ripe produce.

“Like many others, this is my favorite time of the year – harvest time,” said Laura Barr, University of Illinois Extension nutrition and wellness educator. “I have ‘put up’ strawberry preserves, green beans, dill pickles, corn relish, tomato sauce and salsa with the fresh, abundant produce of the season.”

Barr is sharing samples and tips from projects like these during food preservation demonstrations with the Aurora Farmers Market this summer. Here are a few of her steps to success:

Produce selection

The timing for produce selection depends on what is ready and in abundance, and that should be in mind when harvesting from the garden or purchasing at the market.

“Choose the best pieces for preserving,” Barr said.

“Look for the ripest, firmest produce, with no visible bruising, signs of spoilage or insect damage. It may seem counter-intuitive, but those slightly flawed items can be used for table use

right away.”

Proper method

The plentiful harvest lasts a short time, but the fresh produce can be preserved by freezing, drying or canning.

“Choosing the method of preservation may seem tricky, but with a few scientific guidelines, the decision becomes simpler,” Barr said.

When freezing, vegetables and fruit lose texture because plant cells expand and burst, and when thawed, they become soft.

“The more water in the fruit, the more structure lost. For instance, if you freeze grapes and bananas and thaw them both, the grapes will be soft and the banana will hold its form,” Barr said. “Vegetables need to be blanched prior to freezing because it prevents enzyme actions which can cause loss of nutrients, texture, flavor, and appearance.”

Additionally, blanching – which is placing produce in boiling water for a short time and cooling quickly – removes dirt, destroys bacteria and softens the product for easier packing.

“Under-blanching acti-

vates enzymes, which make it worse than no blanching, and over-blanching destroys nutrients, color and flavor,” Barr explained.

A dehydrator is a great tool for removing moisture from product to make it safe and last longer.

“We can dry fruit, vegetables, herbs, beans, seeds and meat jerkies with proper methods and continue to enjoy the harvest into the winter months and beyond,” Barr said.

Canning is an effective method to customize produce like low-salt or no salt options. The two methods are hot-water bath and pressure canning determined by the pH – the percent hydrogen or acidity – of the product.

“It’s a science, and the procedures need to be followed according to each step as described in a tested-recipe. This ensures a safe product,” Barr said.

Getting started

For new preservers, Barr recommends a hot-water bath system as a good first choice method. Equipment includes a large cooking pot, Mason or Ball brand canning jars, canning jar lifter with rubber grips, stainless steel ladle, a canning funnel, kitchen tongs and bubble remover. Keeping an open and

Summer is a time for fun, food and relaxation, but it is also a time when foodborne illnesses increase, according to a University of Illinois Extension nutrition and wellness educator.

“Foodborne-related illnesses do increase during the summer months, primarily for two reasons. The reasons, however, may not be what one would typically think,” said Diane Reinhold.

In order to understand why foodborne illnesses occur, Reinhold explained that we first need to understand some of the science behind their causes. The two culprits responsible for most foodborne related illnesses are bacteria and viruses.

“Bacteria are naturally present throughout our environment and can be found almost everywhere. Under the right conditions, there is a never-ending threat of bacteria quickly multiplying to unsafe numbers,” said Reinhold, also a registered dietitian. “Viruses, on the other hand, such as norovirus, can spread directly from person to person or by an infected person who unknowingly contaminates food or drink prepared for others.

“Norovirus can survive for weeks on surfaces that it has contaminated,” she added.

Trinity bids farewell to youth director Trinity Church United Methodist in Yorkville recently said goodbye to Youth Director Clay Hougham and his family. Hougham has been the youth director for the last two years, initiating a youth band and taking the youth on several mission and fellowship trips. He has decided to leave to continue his education. New Life Church hosts Everest Day Camp

Everest Day Camp at New Life Church was a great adventure. Over 300 kids and volunteers had an incredible week together. Throughout the week, kids learned that God has the power to provide, heal, comfort, forgive and love. Through music, games, Bible adventures, crafts, imagination station and more, kids were led on a journey to discover more and more about Jesus every day. Church of the Good Shepherd Oswego had 70 children ages 3-10, plus 15 junior leaders ages 10-18, at the weeklong Vacation Bible School this summer. The kids learned about how God’s everlasting love is incredible, faithful, invincible, unconditional and real. During the week, the children brought in $216.33 to benefit the United Methodist Children’s Orphanage in Cambodia.

Artist George Blaha exhibits on display Fox Country Players to host auditions for ‘Oliver’ SHAW MEDIA

SHAW MEDIA Fox Country Players will hold auditions for the musical “Oliver” on Aug. 27, 29 and 30 in the auditorium of Waubonsee Community College’s Sugar Grove Campus, Route 47 at Waubonsee Drive.

Adult auditions will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 27, and 1 to 5 p.m.

Aug. 29. Children are invited to audition from 1 to 5 p.m. Aug. 30.

Those auditioning should prepare a short song to sing and bring the sheet music along; an accompanist will be provided.

Cold readings from the script and a short dance will also be included in the audition process.
