Board OKs buying station site Oswego official: Purchase of Woolley Road parcel for police ‘a win-win-win situation’

news@kendallcountynow.com A probable location for the village of Oswego’s future police headquarters was announced Tuesday night during a village board meeting, and trustees said they are feeling confident about the decision.

Trustees voted unanimously to move forward with the purchase of the property pending the approval of an annexation agreement amendment.

“This is very exciting. We’ve been waiting and holding our breath for a while to announce this,” Village Administrator Daniel Di Santo said. “Top to bottom we think this is a great deal.”

Under the proposed plan, the new, approximately $30 million facility will find its home on Woolley Road, immediately east of Oswego Fire Protection District Station 1 in the Hummel Trails Development.

The location was initially scouted in 2008 when the village entered into an annexation agreement with the Hummel Trails developer which included the donation of 7.5 acres of land, and the possibility to purchase up to 7.5 additional acres to build a new police station on the site.

Back then, the market cost per acre was $100,000. This cost has changed considerably over the last eight years.

Now, Di Santo said, market value per acre at the location is about approximately $36,000.

REO Funding Solutions V Inc. has agreed to sell the village 16.37 acres for a price of $12,500 acre, but that’s if the

village agrees to certain stipulations surrounding the Hummel Trails Development.

Namely, the landowners are asking for the revised site plan prepared by the property owner to increase the Hummel Trails overall unit count by 78, from 978 to 1056 units. This increases the overall residential density from 2.17 dwelling units per acre to 2.29 dwelling units per acre.

Di Santo said this still falls within the village guidelines.

“The 78 additional units will make the development more marketable,” he said. “With this agreement, we hope to spark interest of a developer to come in and build those homes and commercial areas.”

Should the annexation agreement amendment not be approved by the village board, the landowner has agreed on a purchase price of $31,500 per acre for approximately 23.55 acres of land, costing the village approximately $741,825.

Di Santo said both options are congruent with the estimated cost of the police station project.

“For the price we’re getting the land, it’s a great deal,” Di Santo said.

The village looked at four key sites before settling on Hummel Trails as the department’s potential home, Di Santo noted. The land was also the cheapest to purchase and is in close proximity to the already built fire station, which will create an “Oswego Public Safety Campus.”

Oswego man gets 3 aggravated battery counts added to charges SHAW MEDIA The Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office has filed additional charges in relation to an arrest made last Wednesday by Oswego police.

Brian P. Freitag, 33, was charged March 10 with three counts of aggravated battery after an incident Wednesday evening at a home in the 4000 block of McLaren Drive. He was booked into the Kendall County Jail pending a bond hearing Thursday at 1 p.m.

Freitag was originally charged with obstructing a police officer after Oswego police were dispatched at 6:20 p.m. Wednesday to the residence for a

well-being check.

According to a news release from the Oswego Police Department, officers were advised Freitag was in the house with his two children and was possibly intoxicated. The release states he had locked other family members out of the house, refused to answer the door, would not answer the phone and had turned off power in the house.

Shortly before 7 p.m., a family member authorized police to force their way in to check on the well-being of the children. Freitag allegedly attempted to obstruct officers from doing so and was arrested on one count of obstruction. The children were retrieved unharmed.

Trustees voted unanimously to approve the ordinance entering into an agreement with REO Funding Solutions V Inc. for the purchase of the property pending the approval of the annexation agreement amendment.

On Tuesday, trustees also approved a resolution authorizing Di Santo to enter into an agreement with McClaren, Wilson and Lawrie Inc. for owner advisory services on the architectural selection process, design and construction of the new police department.

The cost of the contract will not exceed $219,800.

The Wheaton-based advisory firm will assist in not only the selection of the construction manager and project architect, but will hold workshops to determine the village’s wants and needs, including technology and layout considerations.

“We feel [that hiring MWL] will add a tremendous amount to the project and ensure it’s done right and on budget,” Di Santo said last month when recommending the firm.

She picks up decisive win over challenger Carl Gutierrez of Oswego

mschury@kendallcountynow.com Jacquie Purcell took the Republican nomination for Kendall County coroner Tuesday night. Purcell beat out GOP challenger Carl Gutierrez of Oswego.

Final ballot results showed Purcell with 8,675 votes to 6,858 for Gutierrez.

“I am just so happy right now – I felt confident all day,” Purcell said. “I am so grateful and so thankful.”

She said she hopes to restore integrity and respect to the office if elected to the position in the November general election.

“From the very first piece of literature I had printed it said on there ‘integrity’ – true integrity and I meant it from the very beginning of my campaign and I mean it right now,” Purcell said. “Day one, integrity will be restored back into that office.”

Purcell has been a deputy coroner in Kendall County since 2003. The vic-

tory comes despite the current incumbent coroner, Republican Ken Toftoy, endorsing Gutierrez in the race.

She said the victory came down to voters picking the candidate with the most experience and she was the “common sense choice.”

When asked if she thought the Democrats would slate a candidate against her in November, Purcell said she doubted it.

“I’ve had a lot of Democrat support,” Purcell said. “This was a hard fight with Carl and I just don’t know that there is anybody that would be able to win against me in November.

I’m not trying to be arrogant saying that.”

Purcell’s husband, John, also won his bid for Republican nomination for Kendall County Board in District 1.

The chairman of the Metra commuter rail service’s board of directors, Martin Oberman, threw some cold water on continuing efforts by Kendall County governmental officials to secure commuter rail service for county municipalities during a meeting convened by U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, in Yorkville last week.

At issue is whether it would be worthwhile to spend $6.6 million in federal funds on yet another study examining a possible Metra expansion into the county. Oberman told officials that if he were in their shoes, “...I could use that $6.6 million for something I could sink my teeth into right now rather than a study that is going to sit on a shelf.”

Oberman also noted that Metra is currently faced with its own daunting financial challenges, including an estimated $11.7 billion in capital infrastructure needs.

Oberman’s comments serve to put county and municipal officials in a tough spot. They could take Oberman’s advice and lobby federal and state officials to redirect the federal funds to help pay for the widening or resurfacing of one of the county’s busy highways or they can soldier on and secure completion of the study.

We believe Metra service should remain a long-range goal for the county and its municipalities and county and municipal officials should support the completion of the study to obtain a better understanding of the current cost to extend Metra service.

They should also make certain the study provides a definitive answer to the question of whether Kendall County or a portion of the county would have to join the Regional Transportation Authority in order to secure Metra service.

By continuing with their Metra service effort, county and municipal officials will be doing their part to one day help relieve some of that traffic congestion that is already slowing rush-hour commuters to a crawl on Routes 30, 47 and 34.

Oswego Village President Gail Johnson correctly noted that if the proposed study is not completed, the county and its municipalities will not be in a position to claim additional federal funding to help pay for the service extension – should those funds ever become available.

“Without the [study] we have nothing,” she said. Johnson is correct. The cost of the study will be worth it if it keeps Kendall County positioned to move to the next step in its quest for Metra service.

The feature film, “Wind Talkers,” was probably the first time most people heard that Native Americans, members of the Navajo Tribe in the case of the movie, were pressed into service during World War II to create secure communications, foiling efforts by both the Germans and Japanese to listen in.

But the Navajo was far from the only tribe involved in the project, and World War II wasn’t the first time Native Americans were pressed into service to secure voice communications during wartime.

During World War I, the men of the 142nd Infantry Regiment, comprised of National Guardsmen from Texas and Oklahoma, were suddenly and unexpectedly thrust into combat when a portion of the French line collapsed and Germans poured into rear areas.

During the confusion, an officer of the 142nd overheard some of his men talking back and forth in a strange language, which turned out to be Choctaw.

The army was suffering because its communications were being intercepted by the Germans who were tapping their landlines, and the officer’s bright idea was to put Choctaws at both ends of the unit’s telephone lines to translate from English to Choctaw at one end and back into English at the other. The idea proved a rousing success.

It was so successful that according to the U.S. Army, after the war, Germany sent some scholars to the U.S. to covertly study Native American languages in case another war broke out, but the government discovered their aim and sent them back home.

The reason the code talkers were so effective was that of all the Indian languages, only the Cherokees had a written language, famously developed by Sequoia. As a result, the only way to learn any of the languages was to live with the tribes, which pretty much limited the opportunities to missionaries and government officials.

Ironically, the U.S. government had done its level best to eradicate the languages of the Native People, going so far as to punish students at government-run Indian schools who were caught speaking their own languages.

But when World War II broke out, their best efforts had failed to stamp out the Indians’ languages and the idea of “code talkers” was quickly revived.

The Navajos who served with the U.S. Marines are the best known code talkers, but both the Marines and the Army also made use of servicemen from the Comanche, Ojibwa (Chippewa), Choctaw, Creek, Hopi, Kiowa, Menominee, Seminole, Oneida, Pawnee, Sac and Fox, and both Lakota and Dakota Sioux tribes as well as many others. In all, some 33 tribes and tribal subgroups served during the war as code talkers.

Choctaw soldiers in training during World War I for coded radio and telephone transmissions. of the Mississippi in the 1830s. Even so, with war on the horizon, Native American men began flocking to the colors. Early in 1941, on the eve of World War II, a group of young men from the Fox and Sac homeland at Tama, Iowa, enlisted in the Iowa National Guard.

They were assigned to the 168th Infantry Regiment, a component of the 34th Infantry Division.

Eight of the men were assigned to the communication section of Company H in the 168th’s 2nd Battalion. The Fox and Sac code talkers included Dewey Roberts, Edward Benson, Melvin Twin and Dewey Youngbear, and two sets of brothers, Frank and Willard Sanache and Judy Wayne Wabaunasee and Mike Wayne Wabaunasee (whose surname ought to ring a bell with Fox Valley residents).

I haven’t been able to track down the origin of the Wabaunasee boys’ surname, but it doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibility they might have some distant relationship to our Chief Waubonsee, even if he was a Potawatomi.

After training in Louisiana, the men of the 34th Division were loaded aboard transports and sailed to Northern Ireland where they received more training, before being assigned to the invasion of North Africa.

They went ashore at Algiers and then moved on into Tunisia where they collided with Gen. Rommel’s Afrika Korps in some of the U.S. Army’s first heavy land warfare of World War II. In fact, the Fox and Sac boys from Tama became the first code talkers to find themselves in combat.

And it didn’t go well. At the battles of Faid and Kasserine passes in February 1943 the inexperience of the U.S. Army’s commanders became all too apparent, as the Germans and Italians chewed up both the 1st Armored Division’s obsolete Grant tanks and the badly deployed men in the 168th Infantry.

And given their positions as communications scouts, three of the Sac and Fox code talkers were captured, Frank Sanache by the Italians, while Dewey Youngbear and Judy Wayne Wabaunasee were captured by the Germans. All three spent the rest of the war in German prisoner of war camps, only

Trump? Sanders?

To the Editor: I would first state that I am a 60 year-old moderate Democrat. This year’s Republican and Democratic primaries indicate people want change from the previous status quo. They are not happy with the direction our country has been headed.

Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders have been the candidates who those wanting change have been attracted to. I would certainly admit everything is not perfect, but can Trump or Sanders really improve the state of our nation? I don’t think so.

Bernie Sanders wants to have a Medicare-type of healthcare, a single payer national health care system. He wants free college tuition for all and a minimum wage of $15 an hour . This all sounds good on paper, but is it realistic? All of his proposals to pay for this are said to be far too optimistic by most economists. We are already taxed too much. One thing I have learned in life is you rarely get anything for free. If it sounds too good to be true, it almost certainly is. President Obama was lucky to get Obamacare approved with a Democratic Senate and Congress.

Do you really think Sanders can get any of his ideas passed? I will admit I would like a single payer healthcare system, but realize it would be next to impossible to pass due to a Republican Congress and the insurance/drug company lobbies.

Donald Trump is certainly a good speaker and has obviously inspired many people frustrated with our present government.

There is no substance to almost anything he claims he will do. He is at his best when he is ripping one of his opponents. People like that he is not politically correct. Do you really want your president using vulgarity and speaking mean-spirited as he often does? Do you think he is a good example for your kids? Why did he fail to condemn the KKK and David Duke?

Donald Trump is like a grade school bully.

Just because you talk tough doesn’t make you tough. Trump simplifies issues that are much more complex. In most cases there is no way he will be able to keep his promises.

Are they standards created by the construction industry to help insure they build more buildings and make more money?

And if it turns out that there are good reasons to construct public buildings to these “standards,” why wasn’t the Village Hall built for critical public safety?

My main point is the village government has a responsibility to the residents, to do right by them. And, yes, I understand that property taxes supposedly won’t be raised to pay for the multi-million-dollar plan, but we all will pay for it via the new 0.75 percent sales tax. Think of what Oswego could do with the $30 million if it chose to use that money otherwise? We need a viable effective police department, and despite problems, I feel we have that now.

Do they need more room, yes and I think they should get it. But I am not anywhere near convinced that Oswego needs another huge multi-million-dollar expense in order to make that happen, and neither should you.

I don’t pretend to know what it takes to run the government plus keep our country safe but common sense dictates there is a lot of waste that could be better used for our seniors and children and the average Joe who pays for his own transportation, food and housing. Is there a candidate or candidates that are willing to sacrifice where their pocketbooks are involved?

Stuck as a state

To the Editor: Oswego government wants to build a new $30 million police station soon. Their contention is that the old one is outdated for a number of reasons, and perhaps they are right. The village has stated that they looked into alternatives to building new, and of those, the most viable I feel, is switching locations with the current village hall.

The almost 50,000-square-foot behemoth was built just a few short years ago for just under $10 million. Today it sits largely underused. If you get a chance, peer in the windows of the west half of the building, you’ll see a huge, stark, unfinished area, now used for storing a few Christmas decorations, and little else.

In the time leading up to construction of the new hall, the village held public meetings about the need for, and how wonderful the new hall would be for Oswego. How many Oswego residents have had reason to enter the building over the years? My guess is a tiny fraction. Now however, it sits in large part a monument to the egos of the then village government.

Parents, taxpayers urged to read 1st diversity plan At the Monday, March 14, School District 308 Board of Education meeting, representatives from the district’s diversity committee presented the SD 308 Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Plan.

It is the first of its kind to be presented for approval by the governing board and a significant accomplishment for our growing and increasingly diverse public school system.

Approximately 20 members of our district staff, parents and citizens have worked for almost two years to research and review data and study best practices from all across the United States.

I am so pleased with their efforts and honored to be the superintendent at a time a comprehensive diversity, equity and inclusion plan is recommended to the board of education. I urge all staff members, parents and patrons to carefully read the proposed plan available now at the school district’s website sd308.org.

With over 18,000 PreK-12 students, SD 308 reflects an incredible amount of diversity. Considering ethnicity alone, 60 percent of our students are Caucasian/white, 17 percent are Hispanic, 8 percent black, 6 percent represent Asian and over 6 percent denote “two or more races.” In 2000, Caucasian/white students made up almost 86 percent of our student population.

As mentioned in the plan, this past school year there are over 7,000 nonwhite students enrolled in SD 308.

Interestingly, that is more than the total Caucasian/white student population in the 2000-01 school year.

In 2000, 6 percent of the student population was defined as low-income. Over the past 15 years, the low-income student population has increased to over 26 percent. In other words, approximately 4,764 of SD 308 students are eligible for a free/reduced lunch.

That number represents eight times more district students than the existing median size public school district in Illinois.

English Language (EL) learners made up 0.7 percent of the student population in 2000-01. This year, EL learners topped 5.3 percent.

These student groups, coupled with a vast number of under-represented students across the school district, need adult attention and action to close gaps and create pathways for success.

Goals included in the plan: • Increase awareness and sensitivity for cultural differences

However, if we truly value different learning styles, culture and experiences, the school district will align its policies, protocols and other systemic components to a diverse student population.

Earlier decades proved the school district could do whatever it took to be a successful and progressive school system. Current and future students deserve nothing less.

New and different approaches need to be implemented within a school district that no longer looks like it did in the past.

Changes to address a diverse student population should not be viewed as less emphasis on, or taking something away, from any other group of students. Lowering expectations should not be an option.

But, available resources, how those resources are utilized and improved instructional strategies need careful attention.

Professional development and training for every staff member is crucial to meet a diverse and increasingly poor student population.

I am extremely proud of the progress made over the past four years.

As I end my tenure, I can only hope a well-developed plan will become a well-implemented plan.

As I wrote recently, “diversity is a powerful force… and diversity builds great schools and communities. The vision is to be a world-class school system so diversity, equity and inclusion are actively embraced and practiced.”

School District 308 is headed in the right direction. I hope all of us recognize the importance of the new SD 308 Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Plan. Embrace it. And in the end, our students will make all of us proud.

Police: Oswego man tried to hire hitman while in jail An Oswego man already in Kendall County Jail was charged with two Class X felonies for actions allegedly taken while behind bars.

Daniel E. Perkins, 40, came to the attention of Kendall County Sheriff’s Office detectives and Oswego Police Department detectives when they received information on July 6, 2015, regarding an alleged murder-for-hire incident in the Kendall County Jail.

“An inmate in the jail was allegedly soliciting the murder of an acquaintance,” a joint press release from the departments stated.

“I would like to commend the joint efforts of detectives from the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office and Oswego Police Department,” Kendall County Sheriff Dwight A. Baird said in the release. “Cooperation between law enforcement agencies is vital to ensuring the safety of the citizens of Kendall County.”

Police said Pryor was taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora and they are investigating the crash.

Springbrook Trail damage Oswego police are investigating an incident in which windows were damaged at four residences on Springbrook Trail North in Oswego on March 12.

Retail theft suspect Oswego police arrested Christina Loera, 25, of Aurora, on a charge of retail theft at a store in the 2500

block of U.S. Route 34 in the village March 9 at 1:25 p.m. Police said Loera attempted to leave the store without paying for merchandise valued at $225.70. Loera posted bond and was released pending a court appearance next month.

Minor injuries in crash A Montgomery resident, Caitlin M. Brakeman, 24, of the 1700 block of Lexington Drive, Montgomery, received minor injuries when the vehicle she was driving was involved in a crash on Heritage Drive at Farmington Lakes Drive in Oswego at 5:11 p.m.

Fleeing suspect in custody County sheriff’s deputies arrested Karen Jean Reeves, 46, of the 100 block of Long Beach Road, Boulder Hill, at her residence March 7 on Kendall County warrants for driving on a revoked license and for fleeing from police along with other traffic violations.

Reeves was taken to the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville where her bond was set at $11,000.

Porn focus of investigation County sheriff’s deputies are investigating the unlawful possession and distribution of pornographic images of a minor child which occurred between August and March 8.

Scam reported An 81-year-old Yorkville resident reported a suspected scam to Kendall County sheriff’s deputies March 10. According to the sheriff’s deputies, the victim reported receiving an offer over the telephone for some real estate he owns.

The caller asked the victim to send a Moneygram in the amount of $898 to the caller to pay for a title search. The victim did so and was called again and asked to send an additional $1,100 to pay for tests. The victim declined and then called the sheriff’s office.

DUI arrest County sheriff’s deputies arrested Carlos Michael Ochsenschlager, 28, of the 3100 block of Village Green Drive, Aurora, after they stopped his vehicle for an equipment violation March 10 at 10:23 p.m. on Century Drive at Manhattan Circle in Oswego. Police said Ochsenschlager has been charged with driving under the influence and was ticketed for having no tail lights and unsafe equipment.

DUI charge after crash Kendall County sheriff’s deputies arrested Cristian Segura-Castillo, 23, of the 100 block of 4th Street, Joliet, after the vehicle he was driving was involved in a rollover crash in the 15000 block of Ridge Road in Seward Township south of Oswego at 12:20 a.m. March 15.

Police said Segura-Castillo was not injured in the crash. However, he faces charges of driving under the influence and was cited for improper lane usage, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and illegal transportation of alcohol.

Man charged with public indecency in local incident OSWEGO LEDGER A Yorkville man, Christopher A. Assmar, 33, of the 300 block of Orange Street, was arrested by Oswego police detectives at his home in connection with a public indecency incident that occurred in Oswego last Friday.

Police said Assmar has been charged with two counts of public indecency, one a felony charge and the other a misdemeanor charge.

According to police, at about 1 p.m. last Friday a female runner called police after a male driver, after asking for directions, allegedly exposed himself to her at Bloomfield Circle East at Colchester Drive. The man’s description matched the culprit in a similar inci-

dent that occurred two weeks earlier in the village. During the investigation, detectives identified a possible suspect and arrested Assmar at his Yorkville home.

Police said one of the charges against Assmar is classified as a felony since it occurred within 500 feet of a school while children were present on the grounds.

Assmar was taken to the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville. A judge has set his bond at $10,000.

Police are continuing to investigate.

St. Pat’s DUI patrols planned OSWEGO LEDGER Montgomery and Oswego police have announced they will be stepping up their traffic patrols for the St. Patrick’s Day holiday today, March 17, as part of a crackdown on drunken driving.

According to police, St. Patrick’s Day is one of the deadliest holidays due to the number of drunken drivers on the road.

“The Montgomery police will be on patrol this St. Patrick’s Day, so make sure you obey the law,” said Deputy Chief Armando Sanders. “Don’t drink and drive, and don’t let your friends do it, either.”

“Before celebrating St. Patrick’s Day this year, decide whether you’ll drink or you’ll drive,” Sanders said. “If you choose to drink, designate a sober, reliable driver to get you home safely from the party. If you’re planning on driving, don’t drink. The last thing you want is to ride to jail with a cop.”

In addition to looking for drunken drivers, police will be stepping up seat

belt enforcement, particularly at night when seat belt usage rates are lowest.

Sanders said always designating a sober driver and not letting friends drive while drunk are just two simple steps to help avoid a tragic crash or an arrest for drunken driving.

Sanders said other important tips for those hosting St. Patrick’s Day parties are: remember party hosts can be held liable and prosecuted if someone they serve is involved in a drunken driving crash; make sure all guests designate a sober driver in advance or help arrange ride-sharing with other sober drivers; serve lots of food and include non-alcoholic beverages at the party; and keep the phone number for local cab companies handy and take away keys from anyone who is thinking of driving while drunk.

The St. Patrick’s Day “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” crackdown is funded by federal traffic safety funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and is administered through the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Students help plan parks

OHS vocal music students earn tuition waivers

Who better to ask about planning a park than kids themselves? Oswegoland Park District’s Senior Park Planner Chad Feldotto was recently invited to Old Post Elementary’s second-grade classes. The students are designing their own parks and playgrounds in class and thought it would be helpful to ask a park planner for advice. After reviewing their elaborate and detailed plans, Feldotto asked the students to assist him in planning a park by placing amenities like the playground, trees and a soccer goal. The kids learned how parks are funded and what materials are used to make a playground. Feldotto’s favorite idea of the day was a student wondering when there would be swings for dogs. We are not aware of any manufacturers that make those yet, but that would be a neat idea. While the ideas are only a concept, Feldotto will keep the great ideas in mind for future parks.

The Oswego High School Vocal Music Department has just released $89,500 in tuition waivers to 55 vocal music students as part of a partnership with Great American Opportunities. GAO is a fundraising company that has worked with director Frank J. Tieri since he arrived at OHS 18 years ago. The students earned the waivers in the amount of either $1,000 or $2,500 based on their fundraising efforts, and they can be used at 340 colleges and universities across the country, 23 of which are in Illinois. The OVMD has been raising funds to compete at Disneyworld in Orlando, Florida, in March. Tieri would like to thank all of the community members who helped raise the necessary funds by ordering from what will now be an annual tumbler sale. This allows the waivers to be earned at no additional cost to the community. Next year’s OVMD members will have another chance to earn even more waivers.

The Oswegoland Park District’s Dance Company, A Step Above, took part in their first dance competition Feb. 27 in Elgin. The competition was part of the National Competition Tour hosted by The Kids Artistic Revue. The tour spans more than 30 states, visits 60 cities nationwide, and reaches over 500,000 dancers annually. The district’s three dance teams, Dream, Believe and Inspire, competed in the Novice Division. Each team received a first-place award. In addition, Team Believe took home the Judges’ Choice Lovely Lyrical Award and Team Inspire received the Overall High Point Award. A Step Above was founded last year and provides studio quality performance and competition opportunities in a no-cut environment for dancers ages 8 and up. Dancers study various disciplines of dance while building confidence and teamwork.

Oswego girls basketball endures rebuilding year Oswego graduates two starters in Kia Dwight and Gemma Keegan. Dwight, who will continue her basketball career at the University of Dubuque, averaged 13.2 points per game and also led the team with 36 steals this season. Keegan, who is bound for Millikin University, led the team in rebounds and averaged 8.5 ppg.

“It was hard on them because they were on a team last year that went 2210 and lost in the sectional final, and to come back – the pressure was on,” Beebe said. “At the beginning of the season, one would have a great game and the other would do OK. Finally, I had a long talk with them and they stepped up. They both had great games and they both stepped up big time. They wanted to win more games just as much as anyone else, but they really did the work and stepped up.”

Oswego returns a host of experienced juniors, including guard Kacie Moran, guard Kira Sneed, forward Megan Rasmussen and center Gillian O’Neil. Juniors Zylyn Jenkins, Ashley McCance and Katie Manna also contributed off the bench.

“I like the group of kids we have returning. They got a lot of opportunity to play,” Beebe said. “The sophomore team started slow and were 0-4 to start the season, but they came back and finished second in conference to Minooka.

There’s something to be said about the kids returning, and now we have to put it together.”

Graduating four starters from a Class 4A Sweet 16 appearance, the Oswego girls basketball team entered a rebuilding year this winter.

The Panthers endured a challenging season, but showed improvement in the second half of the year to win three of four down the stretch and finish with a 4-26 record.

“They put it together towards the end and we were winning the regional until the end. We were right there,” first-year Oswego coach Dave Beebe said. “We had some off days, but I’m happy with the progress. I would have liked to win more games, but if we would have won some of those close games we’d have 10 or more wins.”

Oswego lost nine games by 10 points or less – and half of those were by five points or less.

“We lost to Plainfield South by two, and the next day we lose to Quincy by four,” Beebe said. “When we could put four quarters together, good things happened, but unfortunately we couldn’t put it together. You’ll never hear me complain about how we didn’t work hard enough. This was a great group of kids.”

The season-ending loss to Naperville North summed up the season, with Oswego holding a lead through much of the game before fading in the closing minutes to fall to the Huskies, 58-49.

Hustle wins All-Star Shootout to close season

The fifth-grade Oswego Hustle basketball team recently competed in and won the final three events of the winter basketball season. In February, the team won the won the Stars of Tomorrow Tournament at Waubonsee Valley High School and the Winter Finale A-shootout at Supreme Courts in Aurora. Last weekend, the Oswego Hustle team won the 815 Sports All Star Slam Shootout at Northern Illinois University. Bus driver makes final stop at Oswego Sutcliffe retires after 24 years

D

ave Sutcliffe was just about to warm up the bus in the Geneva parking lot after the Oswego softball team won on the last pitch when he heard someone calling his name.

The catcher had saved a piece of her birthday cake for the Oswego bus driver.

“She has a cake pan in one hand, and in the hand that just came out of the catcher’s glove she had a piece of cake.

She wanted me to have a piece before the team ate it all,” Sutcliffe recalled. “By third bite, I’m crunching sand. The inside of a glove doesn’t taste very good. But I ate the whole thing because she was so happy.

“Two weeks later, her mom came up to me – mortified, to apologize,” Sutcliffe continued. “I told her, ‘You make the best birthday cake I’ve ever had.’”

In his 24 years driving the district bus, the 78-year-old Boulder Hill resident has stories to fill a small novel. His final chapter is about to come to a close as he prepares to retire from his route on April 1. He was surprised on Feb. 13 with a plaque recognizing his dedication during Oswego’s Hall of Fame night.

“There’s been some fun rides,” Sutcliffe said. “But I’m just the bus driver.”

After retiring from his job

Retiring School District 308 bus driver Dave Sutcliffe on the steps of Bus 10. as a warehouse manager for Lyon Metal in Montgomery, Sutcliffe decided to pick up a part-time job with School District 308’s transportation department in Oswego in 1992.

He started with a simple route driving the shuttle to the bowling alley and athletic trips after school. Two months into the job, he was given a bus route before and after school, which he has continued over the years.

Sutcliffe has witnessed two Oswego football state championships, five state cheer teams and driven three dance squads to state. He’s logged miles all over Illinois – from football playoffs in Edwardsville and basketball in Hampshire to baseball in Rock Island and volleyball playoffs in Geneseo.

“You’ve never had more fun than listening to the freshman boys’ basketball team sing ‘Wheels on the Bus’ to you,” Sutcliffe said. “Voices were cracking going up and down and I had a hard time driving the bus.”

He has stories for every sport at Oswego, including a trip to Sycamore for a Little Seven Conference football game that almost didn’t happen.

“I was the new guy. The driver for the second bus was late and I went over to tell [Coach] Karl [Hoinkes], and he was throwing a fit. He’s never had to forfeit a game,” Sutcliffe said. “I told Karl, if you throw a pass to the tight end for me, I’ll get you there in 45 minutes. [Dave] Keely and

the guys all turned to look at this new guy asking Karl to throw a pass.

“I had the oldest bus in the fleet – the kids called it Old Rusty. We get to the high school and we’re looking around for the offense – the other bus is nowhere in sight.

She wouldn’t answer her radio. I told Karl, “I guess you kick off, and every once in a while you give them a first down,” Sutcliffe continued.

“Five minutes to go in the warmups, and here comes the offense. So anyway, we won the game.”

And if he’s not driving the bus, he has plenty of stories from his time in the bleachers cheering on the Panthers.

“We were at West Aurora for a girls basketball game and

in the third quarter there’s a loose ball. Laurie Wackerlin dove for it and had it, but this girl dove on top of her and took two swings at her,” said Sutcliffe. “On the third swing, Laurie held her hand up and she was called for a technical.

Mrs. Wackerlin and I came unglued. I didn’t cuss at the referee, but I told him what I thought. Next thing I know, here comes the athletic director. He told me he called the Aurora police and one more word, I’m going out in handcuffs. I’m thinking, ‘How do you drive a bus in handcuffs?’”

The only thing that bothers him on the road is fog – which he experienced on one exceptionally foggy night during the basketball season. He remembers plenty of his former bus riders, driving a number of siblings and becoming a familiar face to many school district families.

One of his final trips on Bus 10 took him to Lockport for the Class 4A sectional tournament on March 8. Now limited to one athletic route per week, Sutcliffe returned to Lockport in his own car for the championship game last Friday where Oswego ended its season with a loss to Joliet West.

Now, Sutcliffe will look forward to planning a different route – one he plans to take out west to Oregon with his granddaughter later this spring. Sutcliffe has two children – David and Tammy – and two grandchildren, Jessica and Becky Brigel, who both graduated from Oswego East.

“I’ll still show up to the games. They’re fun,” Sutcliffe said.

Schultz, who also earned an IBCA AllState honorable mention, finished with 313 points (10.4 ppg), 205 rebounds, 123 assists and 122 blocked shots in addition to a team-best 37 steals.

Junior forward Jada Boatright (6.4 ppg, 4.5 rpg) supported Battle and Schultz inside as the team’s third leading rebounder, while Dennis (8.1 ppg) was the team’s third leading scorer with an impressive 48 three-pointers.

Oswego East broke program records for most points scored, and fewest points allowed.

“There’s a lot of individual records, but those individual records created a bunch of team records as well,” Carretto said.

Oswego East graduates three-year varsity player Alexis Davis, who was a constant in the Wolves’ starting lineup this season at point guard, as well as guards Milin Smith and Nay Nay Clark. Carretto will have to fill the void with returning junior guards Jesinde Thomas and Taylor Peck as well as the sophomore players coming up next season.

An early morning loss to Sycamore in the second round of the Oswego East Holiday Classic left the girls’ basketball team without its long-awaited tournament championship, but Oswego East coach Abe Carretto circled that loss as a turning point in the Wolves’ season.

Oswego East won its next 16 games to reach a school-record 27 victories this season, finishing with an undefeated Southwest Prairie Conference season, its first regional championship and became the first OEHS basketball team – boys or girls – to reach a sectional final.

“That [Sycamore] game was possibly the key to our success,” Carretto said. “We changed some things up offensively. Sycamore packed it in and we had to change what we did in the post. After that, we didn’t lose until the sectional final. It showed how to not underestimate your opponent. Everyone had to concentrate on their shooting.”

Oswego East opened the season with a 5-0 start before a loss to Benet

as More – a Class 3A sectional finalist – in the Subway Classic at Willowbrook on Jan. 16 and cruised through the rest of the SPC season to win its first outright title to open February.

The Wolves won the Minooka Regional with victories over Joliet West and Minooka before topping Bolingbrook in the Benet Sectional semifinal, but Oswego East ran into Benet for a second time this season and lost 68-60 to the eventual Class 4A state champions.

“It’s nice to know that two of the three losses are to the two-time state champs, if you can be content to lose,” Carretto said. “We obviously lost twice to the best team in the state, and to the best player in the state.”

Junior forward Ty Battle had a breakout season in her first year with the Wolves as she was named the SPC MVP and received Second Team AllState honors from the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA).

She scored 455 points to surpass the 1,000-point mark in her career, averaging 15.2 points per game. She also led Oswego East with 237 rebounds (7.9 per game), 174 assists and 139 blocked shots.

Wolves motivated to turn things around

With 23 players on the varsity roster, the Oswego East girls soccer team knows it has a good chance on improving on last year’s showing.

“We’ve got a good number of girls in the program, and they are pretty motivated and excited for the season,” Oswego East coach Hayley Morganegg said.

“They have been very positive and are into supporting each other. They are really into turning things around.

“We lost some close, key games last year. We understood [conference] came down to one or two games, so we are definitely looking forward to reversing that.

We feel we have a crew that is here to win every day.”

Ten of those 23 players are returning from last year’s squad that finished 8-111 overall and 4-3 in the Southwest Prairie Conference. “We don’t look the same way we did a year ago, and that’s not a bad thing,” Champion said. “It’s just figuring out what we look like now. We are still trying to find this team’s identity.”

The season is scheduled to start on March 17 at Bartlett. The Panthers have four non-conference games before starting SPC action at home against Plainfield Central on March 31, followed by rival Oswego East on April 7. Last year, Plainfield North won the conference, and Oswego tied for second with Plainfield South (at 5-2).

The Pepsi Showdown is scheduled to start on April 9. Last year, the Panthers won the Gatorade Bracket for the first time in program history. Oswego is also back at the Naperville Invite, which is scheduled for April 21-April 30.

The final game of the regular season is at Plainfield North on May 10.

“We are absolutely ready to go,” Champion said. “I think the girls are excited, I am excited – we are all very excited about the season.”

Champion excited for 2nd year with team

The Oswego girls soccer team lost seven seniors from the Panther squad that finished 14-7-4 overall in Kelsey Champion’s first year as head coach.

This year’s roster is made up of four seniors, nine juniors and four sophomores who are hoping to repeat and add to last year’s success.

“Last year, we had a great team and won some great games, so the juniors and seniors that were on the team are focused. They want to win,” Champion said. “Their eyes are on the prize, but we’ve got some work to do.

They know they can win games. They just have to put in the work.”

The four returning seniors are Melissa Kasper (playing at Webster University in St. Louis next year), Jordyn Schoen and Hannah Caruso (both playing at the University of Indianapolis next year) and Erin Marchert (entering the Navy). Schoen is Oswego’s top returning leading scorer with six goals and five assists. She was also All-Conference in the Southwest Prairie.

“You can’t ask for more from them. They are all going into bigger and better things in their lives,” Champion said of her seniors.

Junior Madison Lockard is one of two returning goalkeepers who finished with 126 saves. The other is Megan Rasmussen. The other returning juniors include Brianna Welch, Margaret Pagone, Carissa Brown, Abbigail Grzetic and Kacie Moran.

ksharp@kendallcountynow.com Making its first Sweet 16 appearance in Class 4A boys’ basketball, Oswego could not find its groove against Joliet West until the second half of Friday night’s Lockport Sectional championship.

Despite a strong second half, the sluggish start proved costly for Oswego as Joliet West led from start to finish to claim the 48-41 victory and advance to Tuesday’s DeKalb Supersectional at Northern Illinois University.

“Our first quarter we were down by seven, and we lose by seven,” Oswego coach Matt Borrowman said. “We didn’t come out like an experienced basketball team. We were rattled in the first quarter, and even in the second quarter. Halftime came at a very good time for us. We settled down and we were a really good basketball team in the second half.”

Oswego (19-10) scored two points in the opening quarter, but cut a 26-13 halftime deficit to 28-24 after three quarters. After previously recording comeback wins over Stagg and Minooka, the Panthers looked to be headed for another rally win.

Oswego senior Malique Ross hit a pair of free-throws and knocked in a basket with 2:03 to play before Borrowman called a

timeout. Ross came out of the break and nailed a 3-pointer to reduce Joliet West’s lead, 41-37.

“I think it was a lot of nerves. We needed to see the ball fall a couple times, and it wasn’t falling so we all had that nervousness,” Ross said. “Once we got it going, we all just started to feed off each other.

We lost, but we fought hard.”

But in the closing minute Oswego shot 0-for-4 at the foul line, while Joliet West junior Teyvion Kirk scored all 11 of his points in the fourth quarter – including three late free throws to seal the Tigers’ win. For the game, Oswego hit just 5 of 16 at the foul line.

Joliet West (21-9) was led by junior Trevian Bell, who scored 12 points, and junior Tabyous Casterberry with 11. The Tigers earned 33-28 rebounding edge.

They also limited Oswego to 36.2-percent shooting on 17 of 47.

Ross (19 points) scored seven points in the second quarter and senior Brice Robinson scored 10 of his game-high 21 points in the third quarter, and the duo combined to score 40 of Oswego’s 41 points in the game. Robinson’s final basket of the night marked his 1,000th career point.

“We knew 42 [Robinson] and 22 [Ross] were going to score,” Joliet West coach Nick DiForti said. “But we don’t gim-

mick, don’t go box-and-one or anything like that. We were more concerned about them getting their teammates involved, and they never really did.”

“We needed a third scorer,” Borrowman said. “We had a lot of scoring in our run off turnovers and we just weren’t generating them, and they were. We needed some other guys to knock down shots and they just didn’t fall. It’s just one of those nights. ... Brice and Malique have carried us. They’re an incredible group of guys and I’m going to miss them.”

It was Oswego’s second loss to Joliet West after an earlier 61-55 decision on Jan. 18 – a game played without starters Jaylen Jones and Ross, who were out with injuries. Although both players were back on Friday night, Oswego was without Derrick Chaney, who injured his shoulder in the sectional semifinal three nights earlier.

“Last time we had Malique and Jaylen out, and this time we had Derrick out and he really brings a defensive spark to our team. I really just want to be able to play them with a full team,” Robinson said. “If we could have played all four quarters well, we would have had that game. We just struggled and it took us too long to get hot. ... I’m just proud of everyone on this team.”
