Investigation: Gliniewicz stole funds from Police Explorer

because the cases still are open. Investigators also said Gliniewicz improperly obtained federal surplus equipment available to police officers, such as helmets and cots.

Task Force spokesman Chris Covelli said it’s unclear if any equipment is missing.

He added the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Justice would handle the ongoing investigation.

FOX LAKE – Blue banners and signs declaring Fox Lake Police Lt. Joe Gliniewicz a hero still clung to street signs and buildings around Fox Lake on Nov. 4, but about town a new sense of sadness and betrayal began to spread.

Residents were reeling from the Lake County Major Crime Task Force investigators’ announcement that Gliniewicz had staged his suicide Sept. 1 after embezzling money from the Fox Lake Police Explorer Post 300 he led for years.

“I did have a lot of sympathy for the man,” Fox Lake resident Mark Dakis said while taking a break from riding his motorcycle. “But everyone’s got their alternative ego, and his alternative ego came out today. The truth always comes out.”

In a shocking twist, investigators said Gliniewicz, a 30year veteran of the force, had been stealing from the Fox Lake Police Explorer program for at least seven years, using the money for personal expenses such as personal loans, gym memberships, travel and visits to adult websites, Lake County Major Crimes Task Force Cmdr. George Filenko said.

Gliniewicz, whose Sept. 1 death sparked a fierce manhunt for the killers and a national outpouring of grief, shot himself twice with his own .40-caliber service weapon after radioing in a call to investigate three suspicious men.

Filenko said Gliniewicz, 52, used his experience staging mock crime scenes for children learning about police work to make the scene look like he died in a struggle. He was found near a former concrete plant, an area known for graffiti, drugs and squatting.

ROCKFORD – A Volo woman on Oct. 28 pleaded guilty in federal court to robbing a Crystal Lake bank in March, as well as a bank in Grayslake, and attempting to rob a third bank in Johnsburg, federal officials said.

Teresa Marie T e r e s a M . Knowles Knowles, 39, appeared before U.S. District Judge Frederick J. Kapala and pleaded guilty to two counts of bank robbery and one count of attempted bank robbery.

The guilty plea was announced by Zachary T. Fardon, U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Illinois and Michael J. Anderson, special agent-incharge of the Chicago Office of the FBI. According to the written plea agreement, Knowles drove a Nissan SUV to the Crystal Lake Chase Bank, 1185 S. Route 31.

She approached a teller window and passed the teller a note that demanded $10,000. The teller first handed Knowles $400, and then another $2,450 when the teller was

told that wasn’t enough.

Knowles also admitted in the plea agreement to driving on March 24 to a Chase Bank in Grayslake where she handed a teller a similar note and was given $1,000.

Also according to the agreement, she admitted to going to a Johnsburg Chase Bank at 2911 Commerce Drive that same day. She handed a teller a similar note, was refused and walked out of the bank.

The Northwest Herald previously reported Knowles was arrested in the 1600 block of Richmond Road in Johnsburg after being stopped by McHenry police.

Each count of bank robbery and attempted bank robbery carries a maximum potential penalty of up to 20 years in prison, up to three years of supervised release after imprisonment, a fine of up to $250,000 and full restitution, federal officials said.

Sentencing for Knowles is set for 2:30 p.m. Feb. 4, 2016.

The Johnsburg Police Department, McHenry Police Department, Grayslake Police Department, and Crystal Lake Police Department assisted in the investigation.

The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael D. Love.

By EMILY COLEMAN ecoleman@shawmedia.com FOX LAKE – The Fox Lake Police Department needs at least three more officers, its village president said.

Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy Chief Michael Keller made the recommendation as part of his ongoing review of the department’s processes, practices and staffing, which started after he appointed the village’s interim police chief in the wake of Lt. Joseph Gliniewicz’s death Sept. 1.

More than 30 people have applied to be Fox Lake’s permanent police chief – the previous police chief retired a week after an investigation related to a 2014 incident was launched – and the village is in its due diligence phase, reviewing the applications and sending questions to applicants, Village President Donny Schmit said.

Schmit expects interviews to start within two weeks.

Keller hasn’t made any other recommendations at this point, but hiring officers would be one of the priorities the Fox Lake Village Board would consider if a March 18 ballot measure is approved, Schmit said.

The Fox Lake Village Board voted unanimously to put the question – whether the village should implement a 1 percent sales tax on goods and services bought in the village – on the ballot.

The sales tax, if approved, would not affect certain food, drugs and medical appliances or titled property such as cars or boats, according to the Illi-

nois Department of Revenue.

The increase would raise a little more than a million dollars and would go toward hiring the officers, resurfacing roads, continuing the village’s facade program for businesses, maintaining the bus service and acquiring land for parks and recreation, Schmit said, adding that the increase would not cover all of the needs because they total an estimated $2 million.

“Part of the whole process is to let the residents make the decisions,” Schmit said.

“We’re going to present what we can do and what we can’t do.”

Voters rejected a board-approved $6 million bond referendum, 509-444, in April 2013.

The dollars would have supplemented the $2 million the village has saved up to improve about 23 miles of roadway.

The Fox Lake Village Board discussed other options such as raising the price of vehicle stickers, but that option means all of the increase would be paid by Fox Lake residents, Schmit said. Sales tax would be paid by both residents and visitors to the village.

The board also is in the early stages of pursuing a second referendum, one that incorporates the village into the Fox Lake Fire Protection District’s territory instead of having the village levy for fire services and then turn those dollars over to the fire district, Schmit said.

The village pays the fire district an additional $250,000 or so on top of the levy, he said.

Although the village owns a couple of the buildings, trucks and equipment, it contracts out the actual fire services to the district.

“We try everything. Someone wanted a pomegranate juice, so we started doing that. We made pumpkin juice last week.”

For customers who’ve never “juiced” before, Ranallo suggests they mix a bottle of their all-fruit juice with a bottle of their green, veggie-based juice, then slowly decrease the fruit juice until they are used to the taste.

“I used to juice at home and my kids would drink it, but they hated it,” she said. “They will drink the cold-pressed now. It tastes so much better.”

When asked if they hope to turn LF Juice into a franchise, the friends said their hands are full, but it’s something to consider in the future if the business proves a success.

“We need to get through our first year,” Ranallo laughed.

NEWS BRIEFS ROUND LAKE BEACH – Police are searching for a 21-year-old man accused of a robbery and beating Oct. 25 in Round Lake Beach, according to a news release.

Richard Randall, address unknown, is wanted Richard at large. A secRandall ond suspect, Cornelius Sistrunk, 20, of Zion, was arrested Oct. 26.

There has been a $500,000 warrant for aggravat- Cornelius ed robbery issued Sistrunk for Randall.

Police are seeking the public’s help. Randall should be considered armed and dangerous, the release stated. Police believe Randall is 5-foot-7, weighs 166 pounds, and has blond hair and blue eyes.

Wauconda rollover crash sends 1 driver to hospital

WAUCONDA – A 20-year-old Beach Park woman was injured Oct. 29 after she rolled her car on Route 12 near Wauconda, Lake County Sheriff’s Detective Chris Covelli said.

The woman had been driving north on Route 12 just north of Case Road when she swerved to avoid a pothole, Covelli said, losing control of the car. Witnesses reported her car rolled two to three times, he said.

Wauconda Fire Protection District crews were dispatched to the crash just after 6:40 a.m., Lt. Devin Mueller said. The woman was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with injuries not considered life-threatening, Mueller said.

The woman, who police said was not wearing a seat belt, was the only person in the car.

The scene was cleared about 7:30 a.m., Mueller said.

Former president issues warning about losing democracy Presidents, after they leave the highest public office in the world, can be very influential in what they say and do after they’ve served.

It can be said that former President Jimmy Carter has surprised many by his active role in worthwhile activities, and by speaking out on the crucial issues of the day.

SOUND OFF To the Sound Off caller who asked how to stop an unwanted caller, my son-in-law found the solution: Every time the same unwanted caller interrupted dinner or a quiet evening in his home, he simply handed the phone to my toddler grandson, who proceeded to describe his new puppy.

Scientists run computer simulations using the formula where they change the climatic effect of the gases into one measure. The climactic effect of the greenhouse gases results in an increase of 30 percent in CO2 equivalency units. The increase in all greenhouse gases has the climatic effect of increasing CO2 by 60 percent, which increases global warming. These simulations are estimates and assumptions, not exact figures. Many politicians and environmentalists take such imperfect simulations and claim them to be fact. If all the greenhouse gases have caused an increase by 60 percent CO2 in equivalency units, and man has only warmed the atmosphere about 0.6 degrees Fahrenheit, then these climate simulations are much too sensitive to the effects of CO2. We need more careful research.

Sure: Replace the party that did not increase Social Security with the one whose platform has for years been to eliminate guaranteed Social Security benefits and replace it with private systems based on how well individuals’ investments do. Investigators would not comment on the involvement of Gliniewicz’s wife in the laundering or suicide schemes.

Filenko said an analysis of more than 6,500 pages of text messages from Gliniewicz, and bank statements, indicated Gliniewicz began realizing about six months ago his misdeeds most likely would be discovered. Filenko said the amount of money involved is in the “five-figure range.”

The texts included “extremely incriminating statements” that indicate Gliniewicz realized an ongoing audit of Fox Lake’s finances and assets by a new administration eventually would lead to him, investigators said.

He received a hero’s funeral at Antioch Community High School, where thousands of police officers and mourners paid their respects.

Filenko spent a lot of time in the news conference defending the investigation, saying the slow and methodical approach investigators took was necessary and never intended to hide anything from the public.

Silence and leads that went bust, from DNA evidence at the scene to video of the alleged perpetrators, added to frustration and rumors that all was not as it seemed.

As for DNA evidence found at the scene, Filenko said it could have come from transfers from any number of people and places.

Filenko said this was “the first time as a law enforcement officer that I felt ashamed by the acts of another police officer.”

History was made Oct. 31 as Grayslake North won a football playoff game for the first time in school history with a 47-7 victory over Chicago Hubbard.

The ground game of North proved to be too much for Hubbard as most of the second half was played with a running clock.

The leader once again for the Knights was junior running back Dami Oladunmoye, who scored five touchdowns and rushed for 192 yards.

The Knights advanced to

play at Riverside-Brookfield, the No. 3 seed in Class 6A, at 1 p.m. Nov. 7.

Montini 35, Wauconda 7

The dramatic run by Wauconda came to an end Oct. 31 with a loss to Montini.

Wauconda at one point in the season found itself at 1-4, but the Bulldogs finished with four straight wins to qualify for the playoffs.

Facing a Montini team that has won several state titles was tough enough, but things got even tougher when the Bulldogs lost their starting quarterback and running back to injuries before halftime.

Wauconda got its lone score on a touchdown pass from Antonio Acosta to Tyler Theel.

One of the craziest games of the postseason so far involved Warren and Curie, with the Blue Devils pulling off the upset Oct. 31.

Warren trailed on five different occasions before winning in overtime.

Jalen Powe led Warren, rushing for 118 yards in the second half. He also threw a touchdown pass to Zach Schultz. Kyle Debevec added touchdown passes to Micah Jones and Jalin Tolbert for Warren.

The Blue Devils will be home for the second round of the playoffs when they host Naperville Central at 7 p.m. Nov. 6.

Joliet Catholic 48, Vernon Hills 29

Vernon Hills put forth a strong effort Oct. 30 against powerhouse Joliet Catholic but fell short in its quest for the upset.

Joliet Catholic scored four touchdowns in the second quarter before the Cougars offense started rolling late in the game.

Connor McNamara ended his Vernon Hills career with a stellar performance. McNamara passed for nearly 300 yards and had TD passes to Kiwanne Durant, Andres Salazar and Kyle Hull (two touchdowns).

Lake Forest 34, Lakes 27

An up-and-down season for Lakes ended on a down note Oct. 30 with a loss to Lake Forest. Lakes was down early in the game before storming back and finishing just short.

Lakes’ Jeremy Sasser had a touchdown reception and also scored on defense on a fumble recovery. Jordan Mercure added a touchdown run for Lakes.

Libertyville 56, Downers Grove North 24

Libertyville started the postseason in fine fashion with a big win over Downers Grove North.

Riley Lees was the story again for Libertyville with four touchdown passes; he also ran for two touchdowns and 278 yards.

Noah Moderwell rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns as Libertyville’s starters scored every time they had the ball.

Grayslake Central boys cross country earns sectional title Class 3A Stevenson sectional

Grayslake Central finished as the champion at the Class 2A Woodstock North sectional, which was hosted at Emricson Park in Woodstock. The Rams qualified for the state meet, which will be hosted Nov. 7 in Peoria.

Grayslake Central’s Jack Aho was the individual champion with a time of 15:30.

Joining Aho in representing Grayslake Central at the state meet will be Matt Aho, Jack Battaglia, John Girmscheid, Eli Minsky, Danny Vincent and Alden Aaberg.

The Rams were the only Lake County team from the Woodstock North sectional to qualify for state.

Shane Williamson of Vernon Hills qualified for state as an individual with a second-place finish.

Vernon Hills fell just short of qualifying as a team with a sixth-place finish. The top five teams at the sectional advanced to the state meet.

Grayslake North finished 15th. The Knights were led by Liam O’Connell with a 21stplace finish.

Libertyville advanced to the supersectional with a 1-0 win against Deerfield on Oct. 31.

Libertyville is returning to the state finals for the first time since 2010 after a 1-0 victory against Evanston on Nov. 3 at Barrington High School.

Nate Edmunds had the lone goal for the Wildcats.

The state finals are Nov. 6 and 7 at Hoffman Estates High School.

Carmel finished in ninth place and was led by Aileen Hull, who was 16th.

Libertyville sectional

Lakes qualified for the sectional after defeating Barrington 25-19, 31-29 to win the Grayslake North regional championship. Izzy Huntington finished with four aces and six kills, while Paige Bartlett added 16 digs and Megan Behrendt had 10 kills.

Lakes advanced to meet Libertyville, which won the Lake Zurich regional by defeating Warren 26-24, 25-15.

The Wildcats were led by Morgan O’Brien with 16 kills and Allison Watson and Erin Dunleavy with seven kills each.

On the other side of the Libertyville sectional bracket, Carmel advanced after defeating the host Scouts 22-25, 25-20, 25-20 to win the Lake Forest regional. Carmel was led by Elizabeth Tworek with 21 digs and Ashley Williams with 18 kills.

In the Nov. 3 sectional semifinals, Libertyville advanced with a 25-22, 25-21 victory against Lakes. The Wildcats will face Stevenson in the Nov. 5 final. Stevenson defeated Carmel 25-16, 25-27, 25-22 in the other sectional semifinal.
