Get your Google glasses: AccuVISION is certified to fit the device with prescription lenses By Angela Sykora Chances are you’ve heard of Google Glass---a wearable device with an optical head-mounted display that allows the user to connect with the Internet---and wondered if it was for you. But what if you wear prescription glasses? Google Glass was designed for people who either don’t need corrective lenses or they wear contacts. In response to public demand, however, Google Glass now sells eyeglass frames that can be fitted with prescription lenses by an eye care provider. AccuVISION, which has seven Chicago area locations, is a Google Glass preferred eye care provider, meaning the staff has been specially trained and certified to fulfill prescription lenses. Optometrist James Doherty, founder of AccuVISION, said he was reading an article about an eye doctor in San Francisco who was certified in Google Glass and decided to do the same at his offices. “I didn’t do it thinking I’d make a
profit. I wanted our offices to be on the forefront of new technology,” said Doherty. “I thought it’d be fun for our patients.” Google Glass is controlled through a touchpad on the side that allows users to swipe through a timeline on a screen that is displayed in their field of vision. Hands full? The device responds to voice commands, too. Nestor Pancardo, manager of AccuVISION’s Round Lake Beach location, was the first staffer to be trained in Google Glass. “It’s definitely fun and interesting,” said Pancardo, who has used the device to respond to text messages, take photos and video, play games, map locations, even follow a recipe while cooking. As a medical professional, Doherty is exploring ways to use Google Glass in his work. For example, he can read, record and share information on the device while communicating with patients and staff. The device could also prove useful during examinations, said Doherty. “If we have a deaf or hard-of-hearing patient that we’d have trouble communicating with, they could put
on Google Glass and read what we’re saying. That’s huge.” There are also zoom apps for Google Glass that could be used by patients to further magnify their vision. Doherty finds it exciting that new apps are being created at a fast pace and new uses are being discovered every day. “I think it’s the wave of the future.” The Google Glass Explorer edition, which has an Android operating system and requires a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection, is available to U.S. residents over 18 at the Glass store at www.google.com/glass/start/ for

$1,500. Four styles of custom Google Glass frames can be purchased as an accessory online for $225. For more information, go to www.google.com/ glass/help/frames/. AccuVISION also sells Google Glass compatible frames for prescription lenses and sunglasses, starting at about $89. AccuVISION has offices located in Chicago, Gurnee, Lindenhurst, Mundelein, Round Lake Beach, Schaumburg and Wauconda. Curious customers are welcome to schedule a Google Glass demonstration. Visit www.accuvision.com for details.
