45th Annual Gurnee Days Gears Up for Summer Fun The 45th annual Gurnee Days celebration will take place Aug. 10-13, 2017, in Viking Park and other venues throughout the village. This year’s theme is “Gurnee Days – Let’s Play Ball!”, a nod to the Chicago Cubs World Series championship but also to the popular park district activities enjoyed by residents of all ages and the many youth sports teams active in the area. Many of the most popular Gurnee Days events will return in 2017. Events kick off on Thursday, Aug. 10, with a bike rodeo and teen pool party, but

also the traditional Testimonial Dinner honoring Gurnee Mayor Kristina Kovarik. Friday, Aug. 11, will feature a bike rodeo, story time, amusement rides, Gurnee Idol singing competition, food booths, the beer garden and live entertainment. The Gina Glocksen Band is scheduled to perform from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. in the Viking Park Bandshell. Glocksen was raised in the Chicago area and finished in the top 10 on the sixth season of “American Idol.” Glocksen also will serve as the celebrity guest judge for Gurnee Idol that evening. In between the main events, Viking Park is filled with families and friends enjoying the petting zoo, kids’ talent show, stage entertainment, ice cream and rib eating contests, police canine demonstration, a Zumba party, amusement rides, exhibitors, food and games. The Gurnee Days Corporation, a not-for-profit organization of volunteers, has been planning and orchestrating the annual Gurnee Days celebration for 45 years. The corporation meets the first Wednesday evening of the month at the Gurnee Police Department. Gurnee Days is funded by cash or in-kind contributions from area businesses, individuals and civic organizations. Without their support, Gurnee Days would not be possible. Saturday, Aug. 12, dawns with a golf tournament and 10K race and fun walk. The Exchange Club once again will serve up tasty meals at Ribfest in Viking Park most of the afternoon and evening. There will be open houses at the public works, police and fire departments, tours of the historic Mother Rudd House and more. Two live bands will perform Saturday evening in the Viking Park Band Shell – GooRoos, a high-energy, seven-piece cover band from 5 to 7:30 p.m., and Hi Infidelity, billed as Chicagoland’s favorite classic rock band, from 8 to 11 p.m. The always spectacular fireworks show will begin around 9:30 p.m. after the National Anthem is sung by Wayne Messmer, known for his many performances at Chicago professional sporting events. The Fraternal Order of Police will host the annual pancake breakfast fund-raiser from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday, Aug. 13, at the park, while the Gurnee Days Parade will step off at noon on Old

The Gurnee Days Corporation is pleased to announce Mayor Kristina Kovarik has been chosen as the 2017 Gurnee Days Honoree. For 45 years, the Gurnee Days Corporation has selected a deserving individual or couple to be honored during the annual Gurnee Days celebration. The testimonial dinner honoring Mayor Kristina Kovarik will be held on Thursday, August 10 and traditionally kicks off the annual Gurnee Days festivities. Mayor Kristina Kovarik is being recognized as one of Gurnee’s most distinguished and dedicated citizens. Mayor Kovarik was appointed first to the Gurnee Plan Commission in 1997 by Mayor Richard Welton. She was elected as a Gurnee Trustee in 1999 and served until 2005 at which time she ran for Mayor. Kovarik has been Mayor of the Village of Gurnee since 2005 and was just re-elected this year for another 4-year term. She has served the commu-

nity continuously for 20 years as a public servant. In 1992, Mayor Kovarik moved to Gurnee and purchased a home in South Ridge with her spouse, Gerald and three small girls. A son was born shortly thereafter. Their children attended Woodland School District 50 and graduated from Warren Township High School. All her children are grown with careers of their own and live out of state. Also, Kovarik has four wonderful grandchildren. In addition to her duties as Mayor, Kovarik has served since 2005 on the Lake County Stormwater Management Commission and the Central Lake County Joint Action Water Agency. Both agencies were spearheaded by Mayor Welton in the early 1990’s and Kovarik is pleased to carry on his work. Mayor Kovarik also has served on the Lake County Affordable Housing Commission, been active in the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus and still finds time to support many local causes. The Gurnee Days Corporation wishes to honor Mayor Kovarik for her selfless dedication to the on-going development and success of the Village of Gurnee and her enthusiastic support of various civic groups, all of which have helped mold the Village into a community of which we can all be proud to call home. “I am honored to serve the Village and its residents and businesses every single day. Being the Gurnee Days Honoree is delightful recognition and thanks for

doing something I have enjoyed tremendously. The best part of my position is when I can help others so I plan on using the Honoree recognition to raise awareness and funding for Housing First, a local organization with long term solutions to permanently solve the plight of the chronically homeless. I’ll add a few features to the Gurnee Days festivities to help this organization further their mission by engaging our residents. The best thanks possible will be for our community to embrace the cause on my behalf” said Mayor Kovarik. Mayor Welton began Gurnee Days with an outdoor picnic celebration. In keeping with that spirit and his memory, the testimonial dinner will be held at Bittersweet Golf Club at 875 Almond Road in Gurnee on Thursday, August 10th. Each year, the Gurnee Days Corporation seeks nominations from the community for people who have made meaningful contributions to make this area a better place to live and work. The Gurnee Days Corporation is excited to have Mayor Kristina Kovarik as the 2017 Gurnee Days Honoree and Parade Marshall.
