Police unable to locate jogging teen’s attacker LAKE COUNTY JOURNAL LAKE BARRINGTON – A 16-year-old girl was attacked by an unknown man while jogging July 17 in unincorporated Lake Barrington.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded about 3 p.m. to the 26000 block of Lakeland Drive for a report that a jogger had been attacked.

A preliminary investigation found the girl was jogging along the road when she was grabbed from behind by a man, according to a news

release. She did not hear the man approach because she was wearing headphones.

The man tried to drag the girl into the woods, but she was able to fight off the attacker and run away, the release said. The girl contacted her mother, who then contacted the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. The girl was uninjured, the release said.

The man was described as white, in his early 40s, about 5 feet, 9 inches tall, with light brown or blond hair and wearing a white T-shirt, black

shorts and black gym shoes, the release said.

A search of the area by deputies, assisted by a K-9 unit, and the Wauconda and Tower Lakes police departments, was unsuccessful in locating the man.

ROUND LAKE BEACH – Writing a fact-based fiction story inspired by his younger brother’s ongoing struggle with a life-altering mental illness was a deeply personal yet cathartic experience for Mitch Davis, 54, of Round Lake Beach.

“I really didn’t start out writing with the intention of publishing a book, but then it occurred to me I should because my goal was to help others see what mental illness is like,” Davis said.

“Finding Richard,” self-published in the fall of 2014 on Amazon.com, took Davis five long, emotional years to complete.

“Certain parts of the book were very hard for me to write,” Davis said. “I’ll be honest, I shed a few tears.”

The title character is based

on Davis’ brother, Richard, who was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia when he was in his midteens. He is now 53.

The book presents the delusions associated with the illness in graphic detail, allowing the reader to feel Richard’s inner conflict as he struggles to separate reality from the voices in his head that cause unrelenting paranoia.

It also is a story about the love of family, transformation and forgiveness, Davis said.

“I wanted to get across what Richard experienced but also my hopes and dreams for my brother, things I hope he’ll get to experience but realistically may never get to,” Davis said.

As painful as it has been to watch his brother battle debilitating mental illness, Davis said he cannot imagine being the one going through it.

“He’s been this way for so long, he doesn’t really have anything to compare it to,” Davis said. “I look at my life and think, my God, I have it so good. I’m so blessed.”

editorial@lakecountyjournal.com Authentic Hawaiian shaved ice is hard to come by, but enthusiasts can find it at My Flavor It! Place, along with 40 homemade syrups to go crazy with.

The new store, located at 321 N. Main St., Wauconda, recently had a ribbon-cutting ceremony to introduce itself and its dizzying array of chilly treats to the community.

“It’s nice to be able to expand the downtown Main Street area. It’s one more amenity to make us a destination,” said Laura Ferris, executive director of the Wauconda Area Chamber of Commerce.

Wauconda is My Flavor It! Place’s second location, joining the Lake Zurich store, which originally opened in 2003 as Uncle T’s before rebranding in 2009 and moving across the street to 10 E. Main St. The popularity of the Lake Zurich store prompted owner Anna Razes to search for a second location.

“Over the years, I’ve had my eye on Wauconda,” Razes said.

“The village is so friendly.”

The Wauconda location is managed by Razes’ daughter, Cally Razes, and her boyfriend, Chris Hamel. Both are graduates of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Though she studied biology and chemistry, Cally Razes said the family business is in her blood, and she wanted to continue the tradition.

“I like the Brain Freeze,” Cally Razes said. “We created it ourselves. It’s half ice cream and half slushie, so it’s very creamy, then you get the icy.

I like the orange because it tastes like a Dreamsicle.”

It doesn’t seem to me that he ever gets a break from that.”

Richard also experiences anhedonia, which means he can’t experience joy or pleasure in activities that normally elicit such feelings.

Although the symptoms of Richard’s schizophrenia have remained unchanged throughout the years, Davis said his brother’s response to his illness has worsened.

“He’s been committed a few times and arrested quite a few times,” Davis said. “He loses a lot of jobs. People aren’t comfortable being around him.”

Davis said it’s tough for

people who are “really mentally ill” to integrate into society.

“It’s normal for people to have some off-putting reactions to some of the things they do, but I think sometimes they assign that to the person’s character and not to the illness,” Davis said. “He [Richard] is surrounded by a lot of good people who love him and understand that he has this illness, so I don’t think he gets that people attack him or talk badly about him, at least not to his face.”

It took Davis a while to tell his brother about the book because he was concerned how he would react.

“I don’t know that he’s read

it yet,” Davis said, noting his mother and other siblings have reacted positively to the book, even though some of it has been difficult to read because it hits so close to home.

“Finding Richard” is available in three formats – paperback, Kindle and audible via Amazon.com.

“Even as a work of fiction, ‘Finding Richard’ gave some fascinating insight into the isolating world of schizophrenia,” a reviewer wrote online. “It helped me understand the reality of this mental illness on an intensely personal level the author must know all too well.”

thor showcase and book signing event from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 29 at the Round Lake Area Library. He also is working on a second book, a fact-based fiction novel about Wisconsin’s migrant farm worker population in the mid-1960s.

An avid reader, Davis has a “guys only” book club called Books and Beer, in which he and his buddies discuss a new book each month while enjoying a libation inspired by the story.

Heart health should be a concern for people of all ages, but especially so for men and women over 50. That’s because, according to the American Heart Association, even men and women who are free of cardiovascular disease at age 50 are at a significant lifetime risk of developing the disease.

But heart disease does not have to be an accepted byproduct of aging. For example, a 2014 study published in the AHA journal Circulation found that maintaining or increasing physical activity after age 65 can improve the heart’s well-being and lower risk of heart attack.

In addition to increasing physical activity as they age, older men and women who understand heart disease and learn to recognize its symptoms have a greater chance of minimizing its affects and lowering their risk of having a heart attack.

What are the symptoms of heart disease?

Heart disease is a blanket term used to describe a host of conditions, so symptoms vary depending on each individual condition. The following are some of the more widely known conditions and their symptoms: • Hypertension: Also known as high blood pressure, hypertension is a largely symptomless form of heart disease. The AHA notes that the idea that hypertension produces symptoms such as difficulty sleeping, facial flushing, nervousness, and sweating is a misconception. Symptoms typically do not alert men and women to the presence of hypertension, highlighting the emphasis men and women should place on routine visits to the doctor’s office, where their blood pressure can be taken.

• Heart attack: The symptoms of a heart attack are different than the symptoms of heart disease that may lead to heart attack. The former can be found by visiting www.heart.org.

Signs that you may be heading toward a heart attack include undue fatigue, palpitations (the sensation that your heart is skipping a beat or beating too rapidly), dyspnea (difficulty or labored breathing), chest pain or discomfort from increased activity.

• Arrhythmia: Arrhythmia means your heartbeat is irregular, and men and women often mistakenly believe arrhythmia only afflicts those who already have been diagnosed with heart disease or have had a heart attack. But arrhythmia can affect even those men and women who have healthy hearts and no history of cardiovascular disease. Symptoms of arrhythmia can vary greatly, from a single premature beat to a series of premature beats that occur in rapid succession. Arrhythmia that lasts long enough to affect heart function may include symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, fatigue, dizziness, lightheadedness, shortness of breath, and chest pain.

How can I protect my heart?

Heart healthy habits take some effort, but men and women can protect their hearts regardless of their ages.

• Get sufficient exercise. At least 30 minutes of exercise per day can protect against disease.

• Quit smoking. Smoking increases your risk for a host of ailments, including heart

• Include heart-healthy foods in your diet. A diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables and low in cholesterol, salt and saturated fat promotes heart health.

• Don’t drink alcohol to excess. Like smoking, drinking alcohol to excess can lead to a host of problems, such as high blood pressure, arrhythmia and high cholesterol, each of which increases your risk of heart disease.

• Lose weight. Being overweight or obese is a major risk factor for heart disease. If you have already started to exercise daily and eat a more heart-healthy diet, then you’re on your way to losing weight. Consult your physician if diet and exercise don’t seem to be helping you to shed pounds.

Heart disease kills millions of people across the globe each year, many of whom are over 50. But men and women who learn about heart disease and how to reduce their risk stand a far greater chance of fighting the disease.

Three new programs have been launched by Lake County to help residents better manage the cost of prescription medications and health and dental services. Residents can save up to 75 percent on prescriptions and 15 to 50 percent on health and dental services, according to a news release.

The programs can be used by residents who do not have insurance and those whose insurance does not cover the prescriptions or services they need. There are no annual limits placed on use, no forms

NorthShore University HealthSystem patients planted seasonal vegetables in the Community Garden, which has grown very popular since its inception in 2009. Warren Township adopts technology program LAKE COUNTY JOURNAL GURNEE – When Warren Township High School students return to school in the fall, they will experience a one-to-one technology learning environment where each student will be provided a Chromebook to use in school and at home, according to a news release.

Teachers, administrators and school board members have been working toward the initiative for many years, said Mary Perry Bates, District 121 superintendent.

“The administration has examined how to implement the technological devices and the board has considered how to provide the best education possible for our students in the 21st century,” Bates said.

The initiative was approved at a school board meeting May 12. In addition to working with a Chromebook, each student must learn the responsibilities that come with technology, so the district has created a “Digital Citizenship Program” for all students, the release stated.

The May 31 luau-themed event was free and open to the

public as well as their dogs.

Ana’s Eats and Treats from the Grayslake Farmers Market sold food. There also was a demonstration by Terri Kaminski and K-9 Nadja of Seldin Security, the release stated.

Children’s activities included face painting, psychic readings and games. Pet vendor booths were set up throughout the event, along with a photo booth where attendees could take a photo with their pooch.

Can drinking beer really beautify one’s skin?

It was interesting to read a news release that indicated that a company in Japan is market-testing a beer that’s infused with a collagen nutrient. The company is patterning the beer after a product that includes collagen, which is spread over one’s skin to make it less rigid.

They have evidently come to the conclusion that if we beautify our skin by spreading collagen over it, we can replace the loss of natural nutrients within our bodies by drinking a liquid that’s infused with two grams of collagen.

SEEING IT THROUGH John S. Matijevich Our bodies contain natural collagen which, next to water, makes up most of our body.

But as we grow older, the natural collagen is reduced within our system and the skin shows more of the wear and tear of time. Women especially want to believe that they can slow down nature’s role in aging the body’s skin by taking protein-inducing remedies.

The Japanese beer is

named Precious, and it’s being tested on women at an island of the coast of Japan.

It’s obvious that if their market testing strategies are successful, they would try to introduce Precious to the whole world. Isn’t that precious?

Some companies have marketed collagen-containing drinks but I don’t think any other company has ventured into this beer-plus-collagen business. And this isn’t just some small microbrewery taking a step up in the industry – this is a large brewery, so their vision must be big. I understand that one of their

commercials shows a man at a table with a group of Precious-drinking women.

The man says, “Guys can tell if a girl is taking collagen or not.”

Without taking a stand on whether this supplement will work to re-new our skin, I would say that mixing collagen and beer is a sort of phony way to get women customers to drink beer. We do know the public can be gullible at times, and I would think from a common sense aspect if this liquid collagen will beautify one’s skin, it would work best with a liquid that’s not alcohol.

There’s age-old evidence that alcoholic beverages are not exactly tuned to exalt quality skin composition.

Well, if the people testing this product absorb enough Precious, their minds will be giddy enough to believe it’s helped them become more attractive, right? Mother Nature has a strong position on how long one’s skin can remain pliant. There is still beauty in old age.

I never thought that anything as simple as live bait would cause me so much trouble. It seems there are a few people who took exception to some of the things I’ve written about recently.

Both Spence Petros and Dave Kranz called me out for stating that your minnow bucket possibly could contain invasive species of fish mixed in with your chubs and shiners. They are correct in explaining to me that minnows are grown and raised, and they are not netted from open waters like they used to be. They explained that strict precautions are taken to make sure that nothing invasive can invade the bait tanks.

That said, I do understand their point but they also will admit that on a rare occasion they have found baby bullheads and sticklebacks mixed in with their minnows. How does that happen, gentlemen?

Nevertheless, throwing your leftover minnows into the water is a major no-no.

Don’t do it! Throw them out or give them away.

A couple of readers corrected me on a matter of bait availability. Both Dan Koch and Tim X (who says he is not a “name in the paper guy”) chimed in about being able to buy crickets, which are an excellent bait for bluegills.

Dan and Tim let me know that live crickets are readily available at pet stores and are sold as food for reptiles. Hey! How would I know that? The only stores I go into are bait shops and tackle stores, for Pete’s sake!

I have a few more random thoughts about live bait rambling through my noggin.

I remember a few years back that many bait shops were carrying green nightcrawlers.

Yes, I mean green in color.

I guess the worms were fed diets of something that turned them green. No, I haven’t seen them around in a while, but someone must think that colored live bait is a good idea.

A company named Vicious Fishing will be introducing

OUTDOORS Steve Sarley “Vicious Bait Dye” at the ICAST Show in Orlando this month. The product will color minnows, shrimp, squid and any other swimming baits by submersing them into a liquid. Vicious Bait Dye will be available in “Outrageous Orange,” “14-Carat Gold,” “Pretty-n-Pink” and “Predatory Purple.” Sounds mighty tasty, doesn’t it?

The process to color bait can take as little as five minutes. Vicious Bait Dye will come in a four-ounce bottle, which can be used to color up to three dozen minnows and will retail for $9.99.

Someone asked me if bait had to be alive for it to work.

That is a common question. I would always put live minnows, leeches and worms on my hook before I would resort to using bait that has died.

I have caught fish on dead bait, though. If you are trolling or drifting, a dead minnow, worm or leech is moving and could almost pass for being alive. If you are still fishing under a float, a dead critter looks like, well, a dead critter. It’s not as appetizing as the live version. Dead leeches are the worst of the deceased baits. They really look unnatural, in my humble opinion.

On occasion, I have skewered two or three dead minnows onto a hook. I guess my thought pattern on this says that I am trying to make up for a bait’s freshness and liveliness with more quantity. It has worked for me on occasion.

When I was young – many, many years ago – my father taught me to cover the hook with my worms. He felt that you had to hide the hook so the fish couldn’t see it. He’d thread his crawlers onto the hook and cover it completely.

caught plenty of fish by just putting the hook through the head or even rigging a live crawler wacky style. Even if a fish can see a hook, how the heck does it know what it is looking at?

I like using nightcrawler harnesses with two hooks rather than three hooks.

When using leeches, a single hook works best. Using a twohook harness just kills the action of your leech.

To finish, loyal reader Ron Fredrick from Algonquin sent me a piece of artwork that looked somewhat like one of the old Whitman’s Samplers.

It simply said, “Teach a man to fish… and he will keep bait in the fridge!”

Northern Illinois: “The cooler summer weather is helping to keep the fish a little shallower than normal. The slop fishing frog bite has been great! I like the Spro frog. It holds up well after many fish.

The fishing at Three Oaks Recreation Area – Crystal Lake has been good. Use wacky worms, Robo worms on a drop shot rig, or the Defender jig with your favorite craw trailer. The catfish bite is non-stop on the Fox River.

Lake Michigan: “Fishing has continued to be good.

Most of the fish being caught are lake trout. Some king salmon and steelhead have added to the catch. Most of the lakers are being caught toward the bottom in 140 to 200 feet of water. Chrome metal dodgers with green SpinN-Glo’s tied 26 inches behind them have been the best laker bait. Ressler was a star for the Sequoits in both cross country and track. We learn when he realized he was a good athlete, his college plans and much more.

Sieck: When did you realize you were a good athlete?

Ressler: It’s awfully flattering to be asked when I realized I was “good,” but I would say I definitely increased my interest freshman year of high school

when I was running varsity cross country and keeping up with the seniors on my team.

My whole running interest started when my gym teacher told me that I had potential in fifth grade after the mile run.

Sieck: What have been your best individual running moments?

Sieck: What coach has had the biggest impact on your career?

Ressler: My cross country and track coach Chris Bailey has helped me the most along the way. He has given me countless pieces of advice and is always supportive of not only my health, but the whole team’s.

I would not be where I would be today as a runner without his help and guidance.

He has made me a better distance runner and made running 11 miles seem actually fun when there is an ultimate goal in mind.

Ressler: I am committed to University of Wisconsin–Stout and I am studying applied science in hopes of becoming a physician’s assistant. While there, I am running at the NCAA level in cross country and track and field.

GRAYSLAKE CENTRAL David Llorens

David Llorens was a star for Grayslake Central on both the baseball diamond and basketball court. Baseball is what Llorens will be playing in college at Heartland Community College in Normal after finishing a successful pitching career for the Rams. Basketball might have been his second-best sport based on his college sport choice, but in no way did he put up second-rate numbers. This past winter, Llorens averaged just under 11 points a game and four rebounds.

GRAYSLAKE NORTH Alex Carrillo

One of the most important positions on the baseball diamond is catcher and Grayslake North is fortunate to have a good one.

Alex Carrillo led the Knights not only defensively, but was also a big bat for Grayslake North. In the spring, Carrillo had 39 hits for a batting average of .375. The catcher also had six extra-base hits and 22 RBIs.

Maddie Demo

The Lakes girls volleyball team really had a nice season and a big reason for that was the play of setter Maddie Demo.

Demo’s numbers were almost as impressive as her play on the court. Demo finished with 668 assists, which is almost unheard of. On the defensive side, Demo ended the season with 58 kills and 232 digs.

When the Mundelein girls basketball team hits the court this November, it will have a huge void to fill in replacing the recently graduated Maggie Mahar, who played three seasons on
