LOMBARD – A youth swim coach accused of slipping a pill into a woman’s drink at a Lombard bar was arrested this week during open registration for the Joliet and Morris Stingrays, according to Lombard police.

The arrest happened at Morris Community High School, where practices are held. The club is not affiliated with the high school but rents the facilities for practice.

D. Jay Andersen, 49, of the 200 block of Ottawa Bend Drive, Morris, was charged just after 6 p.m. Monday with misdemeanor counts of assault and disorderly conduct, Lombard Det. Benny Ranallo said.

Glenbard D-87 begins 1st year of iPad rollout

LOMBARD – School is back in session, and Glenbard Township High School District 87 officially started the first year of its iPad rollout program.

The 1:1 iPad deployment program was approved by the Board of Education in November 2013. Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services Jeffrey Feucht said iPads have been distributed to 2,100 freshmen in addition to several hundred upperclass students enrolled in freshman courses.

The program will require students in freshman core classes to rent an iPad from the district or bring one from home. The device must meet the requirements set by District 87’s instructional technology team.

The 12-month iPad rental fee is $189, including manda-

tory insurance. An additional $85 fee will cover digital curriculum and applications, bringing the final cost to $274.

Students who purchase and bring their own iPad will not receive technical support from Glenbard staff and will be required to buy a replacement if the device is lost or broken, according to the district website.

Feucht said a “vast majority” of parents are going with the rental plan.

Students will use their iPads to access textbooks, novels, workbooks and assignment materials.

The district chose iPads based on their prevalence and ability to fulfill most of the items on its wish list, including approved use for standardized tests, options for users with special needs and access to necessary applications, according

Bill Mueller gazebo construction set to start

By NICK SAMUEL nsamuel@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – The memorial gazebo honoring late Village President William Mueller is scheduled to be installed within the month after a location was approved for the project.

The $25,000 project will make its home at 23 W. Maple St. in a courtyard between the Victorian Cottage Museum and Carriage House, which are both managed by the Lombard Historical Society.

The Lombard Village Board approved zoning for the gazebo site at its Aug. 21 meeting.

Mueller, who served as village president for nearly 20 years, died in 2012 from complications with West Nile virus and blood cancer while he was still in office.

“He was a dedicated leader, gentle and full of Lombard pride,” said his wife, Eileen Mueller.

The Mueller family started a fundraiser in 2012 to help pay for the memorial. So far, the family has received $10,850 in private donations for the “Community Memorial Site for Bill Mueller” as it’s called on the Mueller memorial website.

The Victorian-style gazebo project is a partnership between the village, the Lombard Historical Society and the Mueller family, according to Public Works Director Carl Goldsmith. He said the memorial originally was budgeted at $30,000 and was to be covered exclusively by donations. The village decided in early May

I would like to remark on a deeply disturbing comment in a recent issue of Westmont’s Suburban Life by the current Public Safety Committee chairman. In response to the recent epidemic of deaths in DuPage County as a result of heroin overdose, the chairman remarked, “My first reaction was, buy bigger guns, build bigger jails, put more cops on the street.” Thankfully, the state’s attorney dissuaded him. Especially in light of the recent events occurring in Ferguson, Mo., I am deeply disturbed someone overseeing public safety in the community where I reside could have such a profoundly ignorant, dangerous and infantile view.

Kevin Fitzpatrick, who attended Montini High School in Lombard with Orts, said if individuals accept and complete the Ice Bucket Challenge, they make a $10 donation to the ALS Association. If they don’t accept the challenge, he said, then they make a $100 donation.

The disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

It’s named after former New York Yankees baseball player Lou Gehrig, who died from the degenerative disease June 2, 1941, according to the Lou Gehrig website.

“The fact that we’re still trying to find a cure tells you how much money it takes,” Kevin said. “The challenge is very helpful. It’s raised millions of dollars.”

LOMBARD – The social media phenomenon that has people dumping buckets of ice water over their heads recently called a Lombard village official into action.

Village trustee Laura Fitzpatrick, her husband, Kevin, and his high school classmate, Juan Orts, completed the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge on Aug. 16 while on vacation in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Fitzpatricks were called out from the steps of the State Capitol in Springfield, where new state Sen. Chris Nybo, R-Elmhurst, completed the challenge a day earlier.

The challenge, which aims to raise funds to fight Lou Gehrig’s disease, prompts participants to either donate money to ALS or dump ice water on their heads and then challenge friends or colleagues to do the same.

The trustee said Nybo sent her a text challenging her while she was on vacation.

Laura added she, Kevin and Orts completed the challenge a few hours after Nybo did it. “[Orts] filmed us first and then we did the challenge right after. We don’t wait around.”

Fitzpatrick said. “It was nearly 100 degrees outside so it felt great. Everyone should try it.”

Fitzpatrick said she’s known her challenger Nybo for about eight years. She added they both started their careers in city councils – Nybo in Elmhurst and Fitzpatrick in Lombard – and have helped each

The district will phase in iPads to each freshman class in the future until every student at Glenbard has one.

Feucht said if the deployment goes well this year, the timeline could be accelerated.

The district spent two years researching other school districts that use devices in the classroom. The iPad deployment came from the district’s Instructional Technology Strategic Plan, which sought to put devices in the hands of students.

Feucht said the district benefited from looking at what other districts have done and seeing what works and what doesn’t.

“The real thing is, we’re not on the leading edge of this,” he said.

The district launched a pilot program last year in a few classrooms that ultimately helped fix potential unforeseen problems.

“We really spent the better part of a year strengthening the infrastructure around that,” Glenbard East High School Principal Josh Chambers said.

One example Chambers gave involved the home economics room. District staff didn’t expect to have any issues with the room, but they learned microwave ovens can disrupt the wireless Internet signal, which resulted in the school bolstering Internet coverage in that area.

The student rollout began two weeks ago and included an orientation with a two-hour training session about how to use the iPads that featured technical advice and app instructions.

The orientation was held in order to avoid having the kids have to learn how to use the iPad on the first day of school, Feucht said.

Chambers said the student deployment process was a “pretty massive undertaking,” but the orientation went really well, with a good turnout and responsive behavior from students. There are still some who have not gotten their iPads, but district staff are addressing that, “We’ve still got a few to catch up on this week,” he said.

Teachers received the iPads earlier than the students – last school year.

“What we did find essential was professional development,” Feucht said.

Teachers went through intense training sessions to ensure they could use them properly and could get the most out of them in the classroom.

“We’re hoping to see a real impact on student learning,” he said.

Chambers said devices are becoming ubiquitous and it’s a benefit for the students to be knowledgeable in technology use. But school has only been in session for a week, and he knows things could be rough.

“We’re early,” he said.

“We know there’s going to be bumps along the way.”

Baby boomers earned a “live to work” reputation and don’t show any signs of stopping soon.

A recent Gallup poll found that while the average age at which U.S. workers say they retired has risen steadily from 57 to 61 in the past two decades, boomers will likely extend it even further. The poll found that nearly half (49 percent) of boomers still working say they don’t expect to retire until they are 66 or older, including one in 10 who predicts they will never retire.

The Urban Dictionary defines the term as “a person who may look and act like a hipster, but is really too old to be a hipster,” and it refers to people in their 50s and 60s who have given up their longtime homes and are settling down in trendy condos in diverse urban neighborhoods, according to a story in the Wall Street Journal.

According to the American Housing Survey, 9.6 percent of households 55 and older in central cities lived in condos in 2011, the last year for which figures are available, up from 7.3 percent in 2005.

•Boomers and health While baby boomers are living longer, they’re not necessarily living healthier, according to a number of researchers.

“One new study found that baby boomers (ages 49 to 67 in 2013) are living longer than people roughly 20 years older but are not healthier. While they are less likely to smoke, have emphysema or a heart attack, they are more likely to be obese, have diabetes or high blood pressure than the previous generation at similar ages,” according to a study done by the Population Reference Bureau.

•Simpler living Boomers are tired of going big on everything, and

businesses better start paying attention, according to The Street.

“Those baby boomers who worked hard for and embraced the affluent lifestyle of the 1970s through the middle of the last decade — owning large homes and spacious vehicles — have reached a turning point,” said Sheryl Connelly, global consumer trends and a “futurist” for Ford. “This generation is now trending toward a simpler way of living, one that doesn’t eliminate the lavish comforts they’ve come to enjoy.”

•Tech spenders Despite being portrayed as luddites who can’t handle technology, boomers dominate the market in terms of money spent on tech, according to Forrester Research’s annual benchmark tech study.

While boomers represent 25 percent of the population, they consume 40 percent in total dollars spent on it, according to Nielsen Co.

Salseria Grill & Cantina moves to salsa beat ELMHURST – Salsas can seem like an afterthought in some Mexican restaurants, only there to placate hungry patrons munching on chips before the meal proper arrives.

Salseria Grill & Cantina, which has locations in Elmhurst and Chicago, appears to take the opposite approach in as extreme a way as possible.

As the name implies, the restaurant offers a large array of dipping and dunking materials – 15 at its salsa bar alone, plus a variety of hot sauces and a warm red sauce at the table.

They are the true stars of the menu – made fresh every day – and the taste shows it.

In visits to the restaurant’s Elmhurst location, I tried six of the salsas and was most struck by their simplicity.

Each had a relatively short list of ingredients, and the varied combinations of tomato, onion, cilantro, jalapeño, citrus and other flavors were all distinct and present. The thick chips served as an edible platter to deliver them to my palate.

While some mixtures were a bit oniony for my taste, special mention goes to the gordo tomatillo, roasted veggie and verde salsas at the bar. My favorite of all was the warm red served with the chips, whose savory flavor added a wonderful change of pace.

Just as the French celebrate sauces, the salsas add a lot to the rest of the food, taking it up another notch.

The beef burrito was at its best when used as a way to experiment with different accompaniments. The beef and beans inside gave a very subtle base of flavors that played well with every salsa I threw at them. It was toasted perfectly on the outside, and despite being filling, also comes in two (yes, two) larger sizes to satiate even the hungriest of appetites.

In the interest of culinary diversity, my second choice was a combo platter, featuring a pork taco, chile relleno and

My other pick was the pork taco, which was surprisingly moist, uncomplicated and delicious, once again delivering a good opportunity to experiment with salsa combinations.

I gladly would have eaten a plate of them, but was full

The atmosphere was another highlight, featuring huge, bright posters of old Spanish-language movies, and walls of various hot sauces.

Music that was loud enough to hear and enjoy, but not drown out conversation, rounded out the lively ambience.

Salseria’s waitstaff was very attentive, and I was made

to feel welcome. On the liquid front for another visit, the menu highlights Margaritas and homemade sangria along with imported beer.

If you like baseball, you’ve probably watched the World Series on television. But did you know that Little League Baseball also has a world series? It’s played every August in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, where Little League Baseball was created.

This year, the sport is celebrating its 75th anniversary.

By the end of the 19th century, baseball was known as America’s pastime, but there were few opportunities for children to play organized games. That’s when Carl Stotz of Williamsport stepped in.

Stotz often played ball with his young nephews, and in 1938 decided to organize a program for them as a way to teach them about sportsmanship and teamwork. There were just three teams in the early years, but the sport quickly grew, and by the 1950s, there were teams all over the U.S. as well as other countries. Today, more than 200,000 teams in 80 countries play Little League.

The rules have changed a bit in 75 years. Little League used to be for 11- and 12-yearold boys only, but today, 13-year-olds are allowed in certain circumstances.

Girls are allowed, too. This year, Mo’ne Davis from Philadelphia made a splash when she took the mound in the Little League World Series as the 18th girl to play in the series and the first female pitcher to throw a shutout, which means the opposing team did not score any runs against her team.

The squad has 13 returning starters and excitement from the conference move from the DuPage Valley Conference to the Upstate Eight Valley. Sullivan is in his second year as a team captain.

He spoke with Suburban Life sports reporter Dan Santaromita about the higher expectations and the program’s development so far.

Santaromita: How does it feel to be back out at practice?

Sullivan: It feels great, different team. I love all the energy from the new guys. We’re very experienced this year so we’re

Sullivan: We’re bonding more.

Santaromita: What’s the feeling like to have the season so close?

Rushing: It’s fun to be back with a new group of guys even

Santaromita: Do you feel like you have anything to prove with all the talent you lost from last year?

Rushing: I feel like we can do it without them. It didn’t hurt as much. Our group of guys this year are still as skilled and still as talented and we’re still going to put in

Santaromita: Do you think the program has come a long way since you were a freshman?

Rushing: From my freshman year to my senior year, now the program has grown tremendously and we’re just trying to keep the culture growing. I believe it’s going to be like this for years and years. We’ll keep going out and doing what we do.

Santaromita: Do you have any goals for the season?

Rushing: Win conference and try to get past the first round of the playoffs.

VILLA PARK – Willowbrook has the tough task of replacing a number of prolific offensive weapons this season, but one of the returning contributors is wide receiver Kyle Rushing. The senior provides a big target and good athleticism at the position.

Rushing was a freshman when the Warriors went 0-9 and has since seen the program make the playoffs the past two seasons and wants to keep the streak going. He spoke with Suburban Life sports reporter Dan Santaromita about this year’s team.

EXPERIENCED DEFENSE: The offense has a lot of new faces, but the Warriors’ defense returns a number of starters. Seniors Jake Henderson and Andrew Kanelos and junior Elijah Rochelle should be key players. “We return more guys defensively,” coach Nick Hildreth said. “We have a little bit more experience, which doesn’t guarantee anything, but at least those guys have been on the field and know varsity speed.”

“There’s competition all over the place, where the past couple years pretty much we’ve been going into the summer knowing who was where,” Hildreth said. “Across the board there’s been competition at different spots, which is nice to see. That creates a little more depth without a doubt.”
