LOMBARD – The 2014 Taste of Lombard kicked off Tuesday evening at Madison Meadow Park with live bands like The Placebo Effect and Modern Day Romeos. Following violent thunderstorms that rolled across the western suburbs Monday night, Tuesday featured cooler temperatures and a perfect night for tasty food items, local vendors and carnival games. A fireworks show will take place at dusk Friday night, followed by a performance by hometown band The Fold. dgood@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – May housing sales in Lombard provided much-needed stabilization to the market after a bitterly cold start to 2014. Doug MacArtney of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage said the brutal winter conditions in the first quarter of 2014 were reflected in the housing market. He said sales were down compared to the first quarter of 2013. “While the second quarter has been everything we were hoping for, year-to-date we’re still playing catchup,” said MacArtney, managing broker of the Lombard branch.

Comparing numbers from May 2013 to May 2014, home sales were down 14.6 percent in Lombard from 48 to 41, according to data from Mainstreet Organization of Realtors. Sale prices, however, were up. The median sale price

in Lombard jumped from $197,697 to $240,000, according to the Realtors group. MacArtney said that’s not an indication that property values have gone up that amount. There has been an uptick in higher-end sales as “move-up buyers” have been

able to sell their starter homes and shop at a higher price point, he said. “In fact, [property values] appear to have stabilized, they’ve been relatively flat year-over-year,” MacArtney said. There’s still hope for sellers

Lightning strike sparks house fire in Lombard By MATTHEW PIECHALAK LOMBARD – An apparent lightning strike stemming from severe weather that moved across the area Monday night sparked a fire that caused about $100,000 to a Lombard home. “We have investigators at the house right now, but it looks to be very evident that lightning struck the front of the house and possibly the rear of the house,” Lombard Assistant Fire Chief Jerry Howell said. The Lombard Fire Department was dispatched at 10:36 p.m. Monday for an “inside smoke investigation” at a home in the 1100 block of East Adams Street. Responding firefighters reported a fire in the rear of the residence extending up the inside walls and the first-floor ceiling, Howell said. All residents were safely evacuated from the home and no injuries were reported, Howell said. The fire was elevated to a general alarm, bringing assistance from the Villa Park, Elmhurst and Downers Grove fire departments, as well as the Glenside, Carol Stream, Addison and York Center fire protection districts.

The fire appears to be related to a lightning strike that left heavy physical damage to the home and nearby trees, Howell said. “We have it verified that the owner, who minutes before the strike was out in the front yard near a large tree,” Howell said. “Today that tree shows signs of burning and a large hole in the ground.” A pair of severe thunderstorms swept through the western suburbs Monday night, causing damage with winds reported in excess of 80 mph. A few downed trees and pockets of street flooding were the only issues reported to the Lombard Public Works Department, director Carl Goldsmith said Tuesday morning. “All of the issues have been resolved,” Goldsmith said. “We were fortunate.” Northern Illinois University meteorologist Gilbert Sebenste said that the cold air from the strong winds of the storm blew ahead of the storm itself, tempering the storm as it moved into Illinois. Wednesday temperatures will barely hit 70 and Thursday they should hover around 77, Sebenste said. “The Fourth of July looks absolutely beautiful,” Sebenste said.

Overall, the book distinguishes typical behavior versus ADHD behavior, Mac explained. “I go through areas of ADHD on what is normal and what is clinically significant.” The book also discusses the disorder as genetic, and stresses to readers that behaviors associated with ADHD are no one’s fault, Mac said. “I want parents to understand that it is not their fault,” she said. “I want them to real-

LOMBARD – A billing error stemming from a system conversion has some Illinois American Water Co. customers in Lombard and Glen Ellyn making up the difference on their monthly bills. For a majority of customers, the adjustment is for $202.48, which can be paid now or spread out over the next year, interest free, with no late payment charges, according to a news release from Illinois American Water. Some were issued a slightly lower bill, if they have been customers less than a year, or slightly more – $210.45 – that includes a year of sewer charges and an additional 21 cents from the State Recovery Tax. The error, which affected sewage treatment and collection charges, resulted in an incorrect billing for services to about 2,400 customers in

Kaitlin’s Hideout gets nonprofit status By ANNA SCHIER aschier@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Lisa Kelly, founder of the Glen Ellyn nonprofit Kaitlin’s Hideout, doesn’t like the word “disabilities.” She prefers, “special abilities.” The organization, located in the Little Shops in downtown Glen Ellyn, offers recreation and support for children with special abilities, primarily focusing on those with low-functioning autism. Kaitlin’s Hideout officially was classified as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization June 4. With its new status, the organization, which largely has been supported by small donations and class fees, is eligible for grant funding, something Kelly is in the process of pursuing. “These kids, they need a place to go to have fun,” said Kelly, a Lombard resident. Kelly opened the nonprofit in 2011, inspired by her daughter, now 13, who has regressive autism and for whom the organization is named. However, sustaining Kaitlin’s Hideout has been an uphill battle, Kelly said. She would like to hire a therapist to help the children with their social skills, transition the back of the Hideout into usable space and lower

It moved to a larger space a year ago, which allows for more classes and programs, but Kelly, who has no professional training with special needs care and said she lost her much-needed second job as a bus driver when her employer lost its contract with Wheaton schools, is the organization’s only full-time staffer. Despite her limited resources, Kelly said the demand for a place like Kaitlin’s Hideout is high. More than 100 families from Gurnee to Bourbonnais

attend the nonprofit’s programs, which include yoga, music and social play. “There really isn’t anything else in the community quite like it,” said volunteer Shaun Emerson, a retired entrepreneur, who volunteers as a business consultant and yoga teacher for the organization. Programming is engineered to encourage social skills, such as eye contact, following directions, self-expression and teamwork. Additionally, Kaitlin’s Hideout offers drop-off play between programs and respite care by appointment, which gives parents the chance to attend commitments by themselves with the knowledge that their child is being watched by an autism-informed caretaker. Such services are necessary, Kelly said, and many special recreation association offerings are expensive and limited in their availabilities. “There is not enough out there for these kids,” she said. Kelly said it’s important parents of children with autism spend time together, sharing experiences and resources, and she seeks to create a safe place for them, as well as their children. “I’m not going to say it’s not hard,” she said. “And that’s why my heart is so with these parents and these families.”

Cooper’s Corner stakes claim on big flavor WINFIELD – When friends recommended Cooper’s Corner, we decided to pay a visit to the restaurant that opened earlier this year in the spot that once housed the venerable Viking. We walked in on a Friday night to the sound of live music and were offered a choice of seating in the expansive lounge near the band or one of the dining rooms. We opted for the dining room closest to the bar for a happy medium. The space is updated, yet preserves classic old-school steakhouse charm with large booths, banquettes, tables with comfy chairs and lots of elbow room. And while the chef puts plenty of emphasis on roast beef, steak and other red meat dishes, there’s a healthy accent on seafood, pastas, freshly prepared crab cakes, sandwiches and other options that make the decision of what to order pleasurably conflicted. We opted to try the stuffed sesame portabella appetizer, which complemented the meaty mushroom with goat cheese, caramelized onion, and roasted red pepper that popped. “It’s an interesting blend of flavors and textures,” raved my date. We each chose soup over salad: a creamy clam chowder and a baked onion. The latter was good, but a tad salty. My selection of an entree became easy when I spotted the slow-roasted prime rib featured at the top of the menu, and chose the smallest of the three portion choices. It arrived rare per my request, and was sublimely tender and juicy. Its side dish was a superb mix of sauteed zucchini, broccoli, carrot, squash and onion cooked al dente. My companion chose one of the evening’s specials: the baked berry Florentine stuffed pork loin. The fruit topping made it a memorable dish. A massive portion, we enjoyed it for lunch the next day.

Among many temptations, I look forward to trying the other dish I’d considered: pork short ribs with barbecue sauce, and a smoky hint of chipotle peppers. The restaurant, open for lunch and dinner, features daily early-bird enticements, and highlights salads prepared with locally sourced produce. We did not leave enough room for one of the homemade desserts suggested by a friend, whose comment about the grilled shrimp entree she enjoyed on a previous visit was an enthusiastic “Yummy.” We second the sentiment. Cooper’s Corner, with its large parking lot, is easy to find on Roosevelt Road on the border between Winfield and

Wheaton, and well worth a trip for a relaxing experience, deliciously fresh ingredients, friendly service and the added option of hitting the dance floor Fridays and Saturdays. The weekend acts range from blues and R&B to jazz and Rat Pack favorites. The lounge also is home to a piano bar with a vocalist Thursdays, and every other Thursday, Cooper’s Corner

Some area teams, like Montini and Addison Trail, are taking part in competitive 7-on-7 tournaments while others are just happy to learn about their teams and develop chemistry via summer camps and practices. Montini, the defending champion, placed fourth, while Addison Trail went 4-5 in the twoday tournament. Montini, which features senior quarterback Charles Norgle fighting for the starting job and Indiana commit Leon Thornton at wide receiver, went 4-1 in pool play on June

Area summer camps start march toward high school football season 26. The Broncos later lost in the second round of the double-elimination day two, but rebounded with five straight wins before Maine South eliminated them. Glenbard East is getting a later start to its summer preparation for a couple reasons. First, the various Rams teams are spreading out summer camps so multi-sport athletes aren’t getting overworked doing multiple workouts in one day. Second, coach John Walters thinks the team will benefit from consecutive weeks of summer practices instead of multiple breaks in between, one which would be for the week of the Fourth of July.

The Rams start summer practice July 7. Otherwise, things remain the same. “It’s the same drill,” Walters said. “We’re going to do our thing, install our offense and defense. We have 7-on7s and linemen challenges ahead.” The Rams are preparing for a debut season in the Upstate Eight Conference in the fall. East is in the Valley division and will face Neuqua Valley, Metea Valley, Waubonsie Valley, Bartlett, South Elgin, East Aurora and old DuPage Valley Conference foe West Aurora. Facing an almost entirely new schedule presents challenges, but Walters doesn’t think it

will have a big impact come game night. “There’s really no secrets going into Friday night,” Walters said. “We have an idea of what they’re going to do and they will have an idea of what we’re going to do.” For Willowbrook, camp started June 16. The Warriors already hosted a 7-on-7 event on June 26 and host another July 12. Another West Suburban Conference team, York, is looking to rebound from two straight losing seasons under new head coach Matt Monken. The Dukes haven’t missed the playoffs for three straight seasons since 1985.

Retirement life ‘is perfect’ for former Bull By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen endure as all-time great players for the Chicago Bulls. However, Toni Kukoc earned his own spot in Bulls’ lore in 1994 when he hit a buzzer-beater to defeat the New York Knicks in a playoff game. That was near the end of the his rookie season, after which he went on to play in Chicago until the 1999-2000 season. Kukoc officially retired from professional basketball in 2006, but he was back on the court this past week hosting and coaching a camp at the Bulls/Sox Academy in Lisle. He took time from working with camp participants to speak with Suburban Life sports editor Jason Rossi about the camp, his retirement, his native Croatia’s involvement in the World Cup, and his famous last-second shot. Rossi: What has kept you busy in retirement? Kukoc: Not much. Play a

little golf and watching basketball. That’s pretty much it. Life is perfect. I became like a golf addict, so as long as the weather is nice I can go and golf. Rossi: What are your thoughts on the camp? Kukoc: It’s a fun time for the kids. We’re trying to work on fundamentals of the game and teaching them to play the right way and have fun while doing it. Rossi: What’s the biggest fundamental you try and get across to the kids? Kukoc: There’s a theme [to

the camp] and it’s listening. Just listening to the coaches and trying to put all that we say back onto the court. It’s easy to forget after five minutes what the coach said and just do it the easy way or do it your own way, but we’re trying to get them to listen to the little details we put in their ears and get them to put it back on the court. Rossi: What was it like playing for the Bulls when they were at their peak? Kukoc: I don’t want to say it was easy; it was hard, but at the same time it was a lot of fun just for the fact that the expectations were high and the ultimate goal of winning a championship was the only goal. Everything else was a failure. It was a high standard, but it wasn’t something where the goal was put so high that it wasn’t reachable. So we came to the first day of camp with the idea that if we played together and put our minds in the same place that our goal was achievable,

and it was, three times. Rossi: What do you miss most about playing? Kukoc: The competitive nature of it that we all had. In golf, the U.S. Open or the World Cup in soccer, you see how much the guys want it, how much they grind for it, how much the fans are into it and that’s when that competitive spirit of mine shows up and boils inside of me again. Then reality hits you, and when I try to overdo it, the body says ‘No, I don’t really think so.’ It brings you back to Earth, but that’s the part you miss the most. The games you won by 20 or 30 you don’t remember, but those last-second shots or the last-second defensive stops, those are the ones you remember and the ones people remind you about. Rossi: Is that last-second shot against the Knicks your career highlight? Or is there something else you think back on? Kukoc: I hit more than a couple [shots like that], but

I’d say championships are more the measurement of your success as a basketball player. So all the championships, with all the stuff I did in Europe at first and then in the United States, are kind of the highlights. The individual stuff is always there, but it doesn’t mean as much if nothing happens team-wise. The shots you hit are great, but championships are what measures somebody’s success. Rossi: Have you been watching much of the World Cup? Kukoc: I’ve watched a lot of it. I watched Croatia, that’s my team. I watched the United States because that’s my team, too. Obviously I’m happy the States advanced and a little disappointed Croatia didn’t. Rossi: Do you ever get together with your former teammates and play some basketball? Kukoc: No, but every once in a while we play golf and we enjoy the competitive nature that way.
