Lombard resident leads troupe’s first outdoor play By RENEE TOMELL rtomell@shawmedia.com All the park’s a stage when GreenMan Theatre Troupe presents its first outdoor play, Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Elmhurst’s Berens Park becomes the forest setting, where stage and audience will be sheltered beneath a tent. “We still have open air and breezes, and folks can bring a picnic and scout out a place in Berens Park to enjoy food before the show,” said director David Soria of Lombard, GreenMan artistic director and co-founder of the troupe. Soria has trimmed some of the text but left the original wording intact. “‘Midsummer’ is such a delightful play,” he said. “The language is very straightforward, [and] it is an ideal show for folks that are newcomers to Shakespeare. ‘Midsummer’ weaves together several stories, with the characters crossing paths in unexpected ways. The plot of the play mixes mismatched lovers, quarreling fairies, mistaken identities, amateur theatricals and a flower that magically makes one fall in love instantly.” He recommends the production for people as young as sixth-graders, and said he has cast a few junior high and high school youth, some who have trained with Elmhurst Children’s Theatre. Because so many more families have attended the weekly event throughout the past several years, Meade said the village wanted to provide more kid-oriented activities and also give community groups the opportunity to showcase what they have to offer.

This year’s musical acts include radio personality Buzz Kilman and the Blues Rocket Scientists; Evolution, a classic rock band covering hit songs from the 1970s through today; June’s Got Cash, a Johnny Cash tribute band; and American English, a Beatles cover band, among other acts, according to the Cruise Nights website. The village also encourages attendees not to park in business-designated parking spots or block entrances to businesses on Cruise Nights, as many will remain open during the weekly event.

LOMBARD – Lombard’s 17th annual Cruise Nights summer event series is scheduled to kick off June 13 with a new feature for families with children. Continuing every Saturday night through Aug. 29, with the exception of the July 4 holiday, residents and visitors to Lombard are invited to the village’s downtown for a celebration of classic and collectible cars, otherwise known as “cruise cars,” in addition to live musical performances, said Avis Meade, communications coordinator for Lombard. The weekly event runs from 6 to 10 p.m. This year, however, families with children also are invited to attend the Kids’ Corner, a new addition to the event, Meade said. Community groups will provide free activities for children from 6 to 9 p.m. during Cruise Nights at the Kids’ Corner, St. Charles Road and Park Avenue. This year’s organizations include the Lombard Area Chamber of Commerce and Industry, TriTown YMCA, Prairie Food Co-op, Lombard Historical Society, Campfire Prairie Illinois, Helen Plum Library, Kiwanis Club of Lombard, Lombard Junior Women’s Club, Lombard Town Centre and Lions Club. Meade said Cruise Nights, since its inception, has “grown exponentially.” “It is one of the biggest car shows in the area and one of the most wellknown car shows because it has been

Groups to honor resident Lombard co-op seeks help from with Log Cabin memorial community to get $100K grant SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LOMBARD – A memorial will be dedicated June 26 in honor of longtime Lombard resident Dorothy Bergmann at Lombard Park District’s Log Cabin. The Bergmann Memorial Fund, which includes contributions from the Lombard Garden Club and Lombard Woman’s Club, will be used by the Park District to build a water fountain and renovate the cabin’s totem pole, according to an event news release. The Log Cabin was special to the Bergmann family because Dorothy’s son was part of the Boy Scout troop that created the totem pole in the park area near the cabin, the release stated. The Park District began landscaping in the fall by planting perennials around the cabin.

The dedication will be at 10 a.m. at the cabin at Main and 16th streets, and it will be presented by the Garden Club and Woman’s Club. There will be a plaque mounted to honor the Bergmann family’s donation. The program will be followed by the Lombard Garden Club Garden Walk at 11 a.m. Jane Burke, designer of gardens for the Lombard Park District, will lead the Garden Walk caravan to visit three Park District gardens and one school garden. Gardens include the Log Cabin, Paradise Bay Pool Gardens, William Hammershmidt School Play and Learn Garden, and Sunset Knolls Garden. Everyone is invited to drive in caravan to each location. LOMBARD – Prairie Food Co-op needs the community’s support as it pursues a $100,000 grant from Chase. The co-op, a community-owned grocery store planning to open in Lombard, has applied for a Mission Main Street Grant, which is part of a program in which Chase awards $2 million to 20 small business across the United States, according to an organization news release. As part of the application process, Prairie Food Co-op must submit a questionnaire outlining a business plan that will result in growth of the business and receive at least 250 votes to be eligible for a grant, the release stated. Community members can vote for Prairie Food Co-op at www.missionmainstreetgrants.com/b/22389 by using Facebook Connect. The voting deadline is June 19. Grant recipients will be selected by expert panelists.

There are always associated risks with swimming pools, water parks and any body of water; however, swim lessons provide education and foster a safe environment to learn to swim and help minimize the risk. Not only do lessons help keep children and adults safe, they also provide so much more. Lessons build confidence and calm fears. Starting as early as the parent and tot level, students practice water adjustment, blowing bubbles, kicking, water entry and pool safety. Each level thereafter becomes more and more involved. In level seven, participants learn to become a competitive swimmer and perfect strokes learned throughout previous levels. Having the knowledge early on helps lessen the fears associated with water. Lessons tend to build confidence because participants graduate to a new level when all skills in the previous level have been mastered. Lessons keep kids active. They provide instruction, and then participants are able to practice their skills at the pool throughout the summer. Swimming is a great exercise, it’s fun and it becomes a hobby or even a competitive sport for many.

vendors,” Gats said. “Saturday brings an arts and crafts show along with all the children’s activities, including a free face painter booth, balloon artist and magic show.” Every year sees an increase in attendees, Gats said. New attractions for the 2015 fest include an expanded car show on Friday night and a second day of bags tournaments. Coordinators have also added a trackless train ride for small children. Another perk of the Villa Park Summerfest? “We keep all of our prices low so all of our community families and afford a fun day at the event,” Gats said. Admission is free. Providing seniors with transit options a key service of township Now that spring has sprung and summer will bring the nice weather, folks like to get out more often to shop or socialize or make their appointment with the doctor or dentist or beauty shop. York Township Senior Transportation Manager Joan Biba and her crew of drivers do a wonderful job for those of you who are members of our Senior Center. And, for those of you COMMUNITY who are not familiar with VOICE what Joan and her drivers John W. do, here’s a quick rundown of Valle the services they provide. Our Senior Transportation Department provides rides for York Township residents who are at least 55 years of age and registered with the Township. To register to become eligible for our transportation services, call our Senior Center at 630-620-2424. We have 3 basic categories of rides: 1) to and from Township Hall, 2) essential rides consisting of doctor appointments, grocery shopping, etc. and 3) nonessential rides including beauty shop, mall shopping, etc. Last year, we provided 10,866 rides. 4,552 of them were medical appointments. We have door-to-door scheduled rides between 8:15 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Seniors can make reservations from a maximum of two weeks to a minimum of two working days in advance. Our fleet of vehicles consists of five late model sedans and one bus, which accommodates eight passengers and two wheelchairs. We have eight part-time drivers. They are dedicated and hard-working individuals who provide our seniors with courteous, efficient and – more importantly – safe transportation. Even though gas prices are rising again and other expenses keep going up, we pledge to continue to serve our seniors’ transportation needs through these difficult economic times and continue our ongoing efforts to improve the quality of life in York Township. Also, as the summer progresses and the days start heating up, I want to remind you that seniors who need relief from the heat can stay in our air-conditioned auditorium, open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. If there is an event or class going on in the auditorium, please be discreet. Either join in or find a comfy chair in the hallway until the event is over. Thumbs up for the new pedestrian underpass at the downtown Metra station in Lombard. It’s great there’s now a safer option for folks taking advantage of the village’s main link to Chicago and other local communities, and it should make folks more inclined to hop off the train and take advantage of what downtown Lombard has to offer. And fortunately, since the vast majority of the $9.7 million budget was funded by Metra, local coffers didn’t have to take a beating to make it happen.

Bikes and cars can coexist
Although the opinion has been stated at least twice in Sound Off recently that bicycle riders need to stay on bike paths, it will remain just that, an opinion. Bicycle riders have the legal right to ride on city streets in our wonderful city and, indeed, throughout the U.S.A. There are some exceptions, such as on expressways, where signage prohibits bicycles. … The bottom line is that both bikers and drivers need to exercise care and follow the laws. Coexistence is possible and necessary.

Too much noise
I’d like to share in the sentiment from last week regarding excessive noise pollution in the summer due to all the power equipment homeowners and their services use. I agree with the other person in that there is too much racket all summer. Frequently, when I go into the yard for a little garden therapy, relaxation or to have lunch or dinner, someone fires up their mower, blower, edger or weed whacker. … And the new noise maker on my side of Glen Ellyn is the built in generators many neighbors now have because our power grid is so unreliable. College loses $2.2 million from costly, prohibited investment By NATHAN LURZ

Two top College of DuPage administrators have been placed on administrative leave after a buried internal audit calling several costly investments into question came to light. Thomas Glaser, senior vice president of administration and treasurer, and Lynn Sapyta, assistant vice president of financial affairs and controller, were placed on leave June 9 pending the results of an ongoing investigation. The audit was led by internal auditor James Martner and formally dated May 4, according to the audit and a college news release. It had been in circulation internally from March 2015 onward, before being delivered to the Board of Trustees more recently. The audit examined investments by the school as of Sept. 30, 2014, and found several areas of noncompliance with board policy, including exceeding limits for specific types of investments and holding investments that do not meet dollar, maturity or asset quality thresholds.

It also urged “immediate action” and included several recommendations, all of which were accompanied by the text “Management Response: Management did not respond to this recommendation.” As of September, investments were concentrated primarily in bond mutual funds and local government investment pools, which comprised 72 percent of the school’s portfolio, according to the audit. However, board policy states each of those should be no more than 5 percent of the portfolio, because of interest rate risks. That over-reliance cost the school $2.2 million after a loss from its sizable investment in the Illinois Metropolitan Investment Fund, the audit stated. College staff increased the school’s investment in the local government investment pool from $10 million in

April 2014 to more than $80 million in September without board authorization, according to the audit. The investment represented 29.2 percent of the college’s portfolio. The Illinois Metropolitan Investment Fund revealed in October it had defaulted on certain guaranteed loans, causing each of its members’ funds to be effectively frozen, the audit stated. Had the college adhered to its 5 percent limit, which would have allotted for an investment of $13.6 million, it would have lost $381,436 instead of the $2.2 million. The recently finished project in Downers Grove from 63rd Street to 67th and from Main streets to Saratoga is a very poor job done by the company the village hired. The sidewalks and partially finished concrete driveways have cracks right from the beginning. The drain ditches are too deep, hard to cut the grass, but they don’t drain properly.
Responsible dog ownership
Ebersold Park in Downers Grove is maintained and repaired by the town. That’s why the grass doesn’t look affected by 30 and 40 daily dog walkers. Dogs should not be walked on property owners’ main lawns. And keep them away from trees and mailboxes, unless they’re on your own property. … I have a dog, and its duty is done on my property. Village ordinances are enforced by the police. Just be a responsible pet owners.
Not as expensive as they seem
If you bought a Chromebook at Best Buy, it would not have the software, mostly educational, that District 58’s computers will have. If you meet a District 58 student, ask to see his school iPad. There are many programs on the computer that you would have to purchase separately if you bought an iPad at Best Buy or the Apple Store. While $280 seems expensive for a Chromebook, I suspect that it has several hundred dollars of software if you bought the programs separately.

Well, predictably, they [tore down] the Edwards House so they can make room for 15 new condos to join the hundreds of empty condos that we have down there. If they do fill any of them, it’s nice to know that any of those taxes that come in are going to stay in that TIF. To make matters worse, any rainwater runoff problems created [won’t] stay in the TIF district, that’ll go out to us in the form of out stormwater tax.

Just as it seemed the home side might be able to earn a clean sheet on top of three points, the Red Stars were awarded a penalty kick following a chaotic sequence that saw substitute forward Mary Luba go down in the area and a Flash player subsequently handle the ball. Determined to tie Crystal Dunn atop the NWSL goal-scoring charts, Chicago striker Huerta stepped up to the spot, only to see Jones dive to her right and parry the waist-high attempt wide of the post. Huerta did find the net on the ensuing corner kick. Gilliland met DiBernardo’s in-swinger with her head to rattle the crossbar, Cara Walls managing to redirect the rebound against the right post while wrestling a pair of Flash players on the doorstep, followed by a simple tap into the open net by the visitors’ most inform attacker. It would be the game’s final noteworthy action, as the NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars look to get back on track when they return to Benedictine University in Lisle for a June 20 blockbuster meeting with second-place Washington Spirit. Rochester, N.Y. – The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars capped off their four-game road swing with a 3-1 defeat to Western New York Flash on Saturday night. The result, which came courtesy of second-half tallies by the home side’s Sam Mewis, Elizabeth Eddy and Jamia Fields, snapped a seven-game unbeaten run for the visitors to open the season and a ten-game unbeaten run dating back to 2014. Red-hot Chicago striker Sofia Huerta bagged the late consolation goal, moments after having a penalty kick attempt saved. The game’s first promising look went to hosts Western New York in the second minute, as a corner kick from the left saw Red Stars goalkeeper Michele Dalton struggle to control the ball in traffic but then recover well to deny Mewis at the far post. The next quality chance was created by Chicago, as Vanessa DiBernardo released Huerta down the left and the striker cut to her right before releasing a powerful drive that was deflected by a defender and whistled wide of the frame. After potential goal-saving tackles by Red Stars center backs Samantha Johnson in the 22nd minute and Michelle Lomnicki in the 25th minute, teammate Alyssa Mautz nearly opened the scoring at the other end around the half-hour mark. DiBernardo picked out Arin Gilliland on the left and the rookie engaged her marker with some nice footwork, followed by a right-footed cross that found an open Mautz at the far post. The attacker was unlucky to arrive slightly late, her volleyed attempt missing just wide. The visitors had another dangerous opportunity in first-half stoppage time, as some nice interplay between Mautz and Taryn Hemmings sent the 25-year-old Mautz into the box on the right, DiBernardo nearly capitalizing on the layoff by releasing a low first-time effort that was saved by a diving Chantel Jones. While the Red Stars defense had looked solid throughout the opening period, the Flash took control after the break and put on an impressive attacking display. The first tally came courtesy of strong buildup play and a great individual effort by Mewis, rookie Fields opening up the field with an intelligent 51st-minute centering ball from the right

with lewd and specific handwritten notes about their children; prayers that included the names of children across the country who had been abducted; prayers for children to be his wives in Heaven; a book about grooming children for pedophilia; and several notes depicting erotic scenarios with children. Ressa also had a calendar with several notes on it, according to prosecutors, including a Dec. 9 note – Ressa’s birthday – labeling the day as “real Christmas” and a note Dec. 25 stating history would “apologize for getting it wrong.” Additionally, detectives found a toddler’s bike helmet, a soccer ball, a wristband and other children’s items. Prosecutors said Ressa is single with no children. Berlin said the investigation is still ongoing and declined to comment on whether investigators had found any digital images on any seized computers. He also asked members of the public with complaints against Ressa to come forward. Berlin said the case should serve as a notice for parents to remind children of the danger of strangers. “Clearly the actions of the defendant indicate that he is a pedophile and that he is a danger to children,” Berlin said. “He poses a real and present threat to the safety of the community.” Lisle Police Chief Dave Anderson said he breathed a sigh of relief when Wilson ordered Ressa be held without bond. “All of us in law enforcement got in it to stop these type of people,” he said. “That’s why we’re here.” Ressa also appeared in court June 5, when prosecutors offered the option for him to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, a spokesman for the State’s Attorney’s Office said. He will next appear in court to accept or decline the offer June 15.

A West Chicago man who may have worked at area park districts, churches and YMCAs as recently as May is being held without bond after allegedly attempting to abduct and abuse young children on multiple ocGiuseepe casions. G i u s e p p e ‘Joe’ Ressa “Joe” Ressa, 34, of the 300 block of Post Oak Circle, appeared in DuPage County court for a bond hearing June 4 and is charged with three counts of aggravated kidnapping, two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and three counts of child abduction. Ressa has a history of police complaints dating back to at least 2001, prosecutors said. He came to the attention of law enforcement after allegedly approaching two siblings, ages 5 and 7, on May 27 as they were playing in a playground at the apartment complex where they lived on Dogwood Drive in Lisle, prosecutors said. Ressa allegedly made aggressive physical contact with the older sibling and offered the younger toys if he agreed to go into Ressa’s vehicle. A third sibling then called the two home and the children’s parents contacted the Lisle Police Department. Upon further investigation, the department found the incident was hardly a first for Ressa. He had a history of parent complaints – at least 10, State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said, dating back to 2001, and some as recent as this year – in Wheaton, Carol Stream, West Chicago, Warrenville and Glen Ellyn, among other communities, prosecutors said. That history included allegedly telling a girl he interacted with he had “special
powers from God” that allowed him to hear things and promising to teach her if she didn’t tell anyone, prosecutors said. He also pleaded guilty to a charge of disorderly conduct in 2004 for inappropriate contact and statements made to a 10-year-old Glen Ellyn girl and was placed under court supervision. Ressa was arrested June 1 after Lisle detectives conducting surveillance on him as a suspect in the May 27 incident observed him allegedly interacting with and giving candy to three children, ages 4, 6 and 7, at their apartment building in Addison, after he visited several other apartment buildings across DuPage, prosecutors said. Two of the children followed Ressa to another apartment building after the promise of more candy while the third left to tell her mother. Ressa then allegedly rubbed the upper leg of the 7-year-old, prosecutors said, and detectives intervened and placed him into custody. When asked in court about his most recent job by Judge Karen Wilson, Ressa said he worked with children and was employed at the Woodridge Park District working at an after-school program as recently as May 29. Ressa also has previously worked with children at the B.R. Ryall YMCA in Glen Ellyn and the Westmont Park District, according to Berlin, in addition to other area churches and organizations, prosecutors said. After his arrest, detectives obtained warrants and searched Ressa’s Chevy Equinox and his room in his parents’ house. There they found what prosecutors identified as “hundreds” of pieces of paper. Included were: drawings by children; the personal information of customers he obtained while employed at a bank from 2006 to 2010, often

Tips along with a portion of the proceeds went towards the five partner agencies and KoenigRubloff Cares Foundation. The effort continued as office transformed their parking lot into a collection site for non-perishable food items, clothing, household items, furniture, books, toiletries, duffle bags and backpacks. Former Willowbrook star Mike Rothmund had a strong first season with Illinois-Springfield baseball. The first baseman hit .304, second best on the team, with five home runs, which shared the team lead, and a team-high 22 RBIs. Rothmund was one of four Prairie Stars to earn All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honors.
Sophomore Cericola leads team in wins for Olivet Nazarene club

Another former Willowbrook baseball standout, pitcher Dave Cericola, is having success in college ball. Cericola, a sophomore at Olivet Nazarene, was tied for the team lead with six wins this spring. He had a 3.57 ERA in 63 innings (12 appearances, 11 starts) with 51 strikeouts. His 51 strikeouts led the Tigers.

Sophomore Vichio returning from labrum injury for Billikens
Nick Vichio, a sophomore pitcher at St. Louis University, had his freshman season in 2014 shortened because of a torn labrum. After undergoing surgery in early May of that year, he was on the road to recovery in the offseason. He took the field this spring but struggled compared to his usual standards. The right-hander had a 6.23 ERA in 8 2/3 innings with 10 strikeouts and 11 walks.

ELMHURST – Soccer has played such a big role in Alyssa Kovatchis’ life for so many years that it seems surprising she would give up an opportunity to keep playing competitively. But that’s exactly what the recent York graduate did. Kovatchis had committed to Colorado State at the beginning of her junior year, accepting a scholarship offer to play Division I soccer. About four months ago, she changed her mind. “I decided it was going to be too much so I decided I just wanted to focus on school,” Kovatchis said. The tough decision meant this spring with York’s varsity team could end up being her last season of soccer. If it was indeed her final hurrah, she went out with a bang. Kovatchis earned all-state honors this season and is the Suburban Life All-Area MVP. Kovatchis’ skill as a midfielder is apparent very quickly. She is able to beat defenders one on one regularly and is also an adept goal scorer. Those skills come from years of playing at a high level. She and twin sister Jamie Kovatchis started playing AYSO when they were three years old. They later joined Team Elmhurst to play travel ball together. At that point Alyssa started playing three-on-three tournaments with players from the Naperville Soccer Association Jaguars club. That’s where Alyssa learned her ball skills. She played as the sweeper and her teammates played as wingers. “I was the last line of defense so I had to get my foot skills going,” Kovatchis said. “I learned some new moves.” Both Kovatchis sisters made York’s varsity team as freshmen. Alyssa was the dynamic playmaker while Jamie was the rock-solid defender.
The twins played on every team together growing up until this year. Jamie decided she wasn’t going to play in college so she didn’t play club and she tore her ACL in a playoff game with the York girls basketball team this winter. That meant the sisters wouldn’t be able to play together this spring for the Dukes on the soccer field. “It’s kind of sad not to be able to play together our last year,” Alyssa Kovatchis said. Jamie Kovatchis’ injury wasn’t the only one York had to deal with this season. At one point seven starters were out at the same time. The Dukes still won a regional and nearly upset Hinsdale Central in a sectional semifinal with Alyssa giving York a 2-0 lead before the Red Devils came back. “Alyssa is Alyssa, she amazes me every time,” York coach Don Vana said. “Anytime there’s a big goal needed, Alyssa seems to be the one that gets it for us. She’s a high-quality player. We’re definitely going to miss her and the creative goals she has scored in her career here.” With high school behind her, Alyssa is preparing for life after soccer. Without an athletic scholarship she is working two jobs this summer and wants to be an elementary school teacher. She is headed to the University of Illinois, but is keeping the window open for a possible return with the idea of playing club soccer after adjusting to life as a college freshman. She may feel sad about soccer being behind her, but she is excited about her teaching future. “I really like little kids,” Kovatchis said. “We also did some things on my soccer team with little kids and I really felt the connection to them.
