Lombard declares March 21 ‘John Egan Day’

mpiechalak@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – A longtime Lombard resident was honored last week for more than 65 years of loyal service to The Lilac Village.

The Lombard Village Board of Trustees recognized John Egan during its March 20 meeting and proclaimed March 21, 2014 John Egan Day in the village. Egan, 90, smiled as a lengthy list of his accomplishments were recited. He then thanked the village he has called home since 1948.

“I love you all. It’s been a pleasure to serve on your behalf,” said Egan, addressing the board room and residents watching the meeting on television.

Among his extensive list of achievements, Egan was instrumental in the Jaycees, the Lombard Park District, the Lombard Historical Society and was named the Lombard Man of the Year in 1967.

“There isn’t anyone in this village that has not benefited from John’s [work],” Schneider said.

Village Trustee Laura Fitzpatrick said Egan used his leadership to mold leaders.

“I always referred to John as the perfect mentor,” Fitzpatrick said.

Egan was born in 1924 in Joliet, and attended Joliet Township High School and Joliet Junior College before joining the United States Air Force, where he served as a photo recon pilot from Nov. 1944 to June 1945.

Following his service, Egan graduated from the University of Colorado’s business school in 1947. He married his wife, Sunny Nelson, in July 1947 and the couple moved to Lombard in 1948, where they raised five children.

Speaking about his decades of volunteer service, Egan highlighted the importance of helping others.

“It can be such fun,” he said. “I appreciate your friendship and the chance to serve.”

Following his speech, Egan was met with a standing ovation and an enthusiastic round of applause from everyone present in the board room.

The van will allow her to take better care of her 17-year-old daughter, Courtney Kestner, who has cerebral palsy and is confined to a wheelchair.

“There are a lot of things that as a growing child, she could benefit from,” Dobbs said. “It’s just been very difficult because I can’t give her the full life that I want to give her.”

Dobbs recently entered the MobilityWorks Local Heroes contest, which will award three handicap-accessible vans to individuals living with a disability or who have dedicated their time to helping someone with a disability.

Both of those criteria apply for Dobbs, who last year was

Creative to Lombard about 16 years ago. Most of its clients are beauty industry manufacturers that produce high-end products for hair, nail, skin and makeup specialists.

Katherine Frank Creative designs and builds elaborate stages to market those products at professional trade shows.

When the show is over, they store the sets in warehouses in Lombard and West Chicago.

McCormick Place in Chicago was the destination last weekend, when Katherine Frank represented about 25 clients at America’s Beauty Show.

The business, which opened a California office a year ago, also makes its mark at trade shows both across the country and internationally.

Beauty is Katherine Frank’s specialty, but the marketing company, which boasts 14 employees, also has clients in the fashion, restaurant, interior design and home furnishing industries.

“It was being run like a corporation, which is clearly not what we had in mind,” said Kathy, whose marketing background and business sense allowed her to assume

the general manager duties.

“This is our life. We wanted it to be fun.”

Humor seems to foster an atmosphere of creativity and family at the unassuming business-park office near North Avenue on Lombard Road, where Cacciato’s son, Frankie, 34, worked for years, and Matthew, 22, plans to start his post-college career.

High School, shows the right mix of business savvy and sarcasm needed to one day follow in her mom’s footsteps.

Frank asked Gina if she’d consider being president of the company one day.

“She said, ‘Yes, I would. But Dad, you’d be the first one I’d fire,’ ” Frank said, as he and Kathy laughed together.

LOMBARD – A giant globe of the world rotates on its axis while Parisian stilt-walkers move through the crowd.

Bubbles float through the air and confetti falls while spectators watch industry-leading hairstylists perform their wizardry live on stage.

That mystical scene was created 18 years ago by Katherine Frank Creative Inc. – a small company now based in Lombard – for an international trade show in Washington, D.C. Building that giant globe to spin on a single steel rod was ambitious. Frank Cacciato and a fellow designer had to be lowered into the globe by a crane as they built it from the inside.

When the globe was nearly finished, they had to cut out Iceland so Frank could be lifted back out.

Getting it to rotate on its axis required a little luck.

Frank and his team watched petrified as the weight of the globe slowly bent the steel rod, which originally was intended to hold the spinning globe upright. They finally exhaled, when it settled into a favorable position and they were able to apply support.

Spectators marveled at the feat of creative engineering.

“It made us very famous,” Frank said with a laugh.

Maybe not famous in terms of earning household name status, but that was a big moment for a business that began in the spare bedroom of Kathy and Frank Cacciato’s Wheaton home.

Married for 25 years, Kathy and Frank recently celebrated the company’s 20th anniversary.

“It’s pretty wild,” said Frank, the quick-with-a-joke creative force behind the company. “For us to say 20 years is a big deal.

When Katherine Frank started, who’d ever think we’d have what we do. We’re very fortunate.”

District 88 remains focused on students At District 88, we’re committed to being open and honest with our stakeholders to provide them with accurate information about the district. Two areas you might hear about are the finances/financial ratings of school districts and the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers assessments.

Finances/financial ratings:

COMMUNITY

It is estimated 62 percent of VOICE school districts in Illinois Scott are now deficit-spending, Helton including affluent schools.

That deficit spending has been caused by a challenging economy and the corresponding decline of district property values, or EAV, since 2008. This has led the financial rating of many school districts to decrease, but District 88 is listed at the second-highest financial level for the second year in a row, which is referred to as “Review.”

Three questions we get asked frequently are, “Where is District 88’s year-to-date budget in terms of revenue and expenditures?” “Why is my property tax bill increasing when my property value is declining?” and “Why is District 88 in deficit-spending?” District 88 Chief Financial Officer Ed Hoster answers those questions at http://tinyurl.com/k4ns287.

PARCC assessments: At District 88, preparing students for college and career is our focus and goal. Addison Trail and Willowbrook continue to implement the new, rigorous Common Core State Standards that have been adopted by Illinois and many states throughout the U.S. The Illinois State Board of Education also plans to change the state assessment program to match the new Common Core State Standards, and full implementation of those assessments is intended for the 2014-15 school year. Illinois’ current state assessment, the Prairie State Achievement Exam, involves a full ACT and the ACT WorkKeys test at grade 11. District 88 is in favor of including the ACT in the state assessment because of its value to students for college entry. Area superintendents and I drafted a position statement and recommendations that have been shared with State Superintendent Dr. Chris Koch, and we also have had discussions with State Rep. Kudos to Emmanuel Episcopal Church for sharing its space with those less fortunate who need a place to be sheltered at night.

Concern over children walking to and from Cossitt School is hypocritical when there are at least a dozen restaurants within a block of the school serving alcohol during school hours. Comparing La Grange to the fictitious television show “Mayberry” is likely done by a person too young to have known the characters in the show.

Barney Fife was a bumbling goof, Aunt Bee was a gossip and Gomer Pyle was a dim witted mechanic.

It was Sheriff Taylor’s good will, politeness and kindness that kept all the other characters in order. Caring for those who are most likely mentally ill is a lesson in compassion that it seems the community of La Grange could use.

Learning center reopens opportunity

By MATTHEW PIECHALAK mpiechalak@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – Walking into one of the communal rooms last week at the new Main Street Community Learning Center, Kim Zoeller saw something that alleviated her concerns.

The Ray Graham Association president and CEO knows transition can be challenging for an individual with developmental disabilities.

What she saw was a man, who initially had reservations about the new space, sitting quietly in a bean bag chair.

“He was totally relaxed because it wasn’t chaotic and it wasn’t noisy,” Zoeller said.

“He was taking it all in and adapting. I think for people that have that need to be able to have some space to chill out and be alone for a moment, this is just going to be so much better.”

The Ray Graham Association’s Main Street Community Learning Center officially opened March 21 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The new space, located a few blocks north of the old facility, will be much more efficient for the staff and the roughly 80 individuals who come daily to use services, Zoeller said.

“This space is beautiful and I think it is going to enhance the quality of our programming exponentially,” Zoeller said.

The center can now offer cooking classes and teach individuals how to wash and dry their own clothes, said Erica Wright, lead life skills instructor.

“It’s beautiful,” Wright said. “We’re able to provide more meaningful opportunities for people.”

The old space, basically a big room with dividers, didn’t offer much privacy or the ability to conduct multiple programs simultaneously, Zoeller said.

“Even though we had dividers, you still didn’t have rooms with doors to close,” she said.

“It would get loud and disruptive.”

The Ray Graham Association has six community learning centers across DuPage County, including locations in Elmhurst and Downers Grove.

As Courtney has grown, it has become increasingly more difficult for Dobbs and Courtney’s godfather, Rick Gentry, to lift her in and out of the family’s 2003 Chevy Venture minivan, Dobbs said.

“To do anything is a major ordeal,” Dobbs said, explain-

ing that Gentry, her boyfriend, cannot lift Courtney because he receives dialysis and is on the waiting list for a new kidney. “Having the van would open so many doors for this family. I never thought it was such an important thing until she started getting heavier.”

Courtney, a junior at Glenbard East High School, is nonverbal, but communicates with her family, friends and teachers by using sounds and hand movements. She is very aware of what is happening around her, and very sociable, Dobbs said.

“She loves people,” Dobbs said. “She may not talk but she expresses herself in a lot of ways. I just wish I could do more for her.”

Healthy Lombard earns grant, falls short of $30K LOMBARD – Healthy Lombard recently won a $1,000 grant from Health Mart Pharmacy, but ultimately fell short of the final round, where the winner will receive a $30,000 grant.

STRAWBERRY MARKS “Hemangiomas” are benign tumors or birthmarks caused by an abnormal number of blood vessels in the skin resulting from proliferation. They may either be superficial in nature or reside deep within the skin. Superficial hemangiomas, which are commonly known as strawberry marks, are raised and bright red.

They usually develop at approximately age six months, then begin to subside and fade until they totally disappear by around age seven. They do not require treatment unless they interfere with a vital function such as when they block vision. Deep (or cavernous) hemangiomas are blue-purple growths that do not spontaneously clear. They may be treated with oral corticosteroids, pulsed-dye laser treatments, surgery, or cryotherapy (freezing).

“You’re paying more because your districts asked for more,” Hinds said.

School districts are set to take in 73.32 percent of county real estate taxes. Cities will take 9.74 percent; parks 5.09 percent; the county 2.63 percent; the forest preserve 2.08 percent; and townships, fire districts and others divvy the remainder.

There was an increase of about $40 million in new construction, up to $180.8 million, and a growth in the number of taxable parcels, up 46 to 334,835.

King said the county likely won’t see any large increases in the number of taxing bodies in the near future.

Despite a fifth consecutive year of declining home values, DuPage County residents will see an average increase of 4 percent on tax bills in 2014, according to a report from the office of County Clerk Gary King presented during a press conference Tuesday.

The assessed value of county land dropped 5.4 percent in 2013 to about $32.8 billion from about $34.6 billion in 2012, the report said. At the same time, the average rate levied by taxing bodies across the county rose 9.36 percent.

Chief Deputy Clerk Paul Hinds said this year’s numbers continue trends established by the 2009 recession.

However, King said, it appears property values could be rebounding after an 8 percent decrease in 2012.

“Hopefully the reduction in the value of property in DuPage is slowing down,” he said. “Within a year or two, we should be back going up, meaning that the downturn in the county the last five years is softening.”

Of the 384 taxing districts in the county, 184 were eligible for the state-mandated tax cap. Every year, school and park districts, non-home rule municipalities and other taxing bodies can only increase their annual tax levy by the Consumer Price Index or five percent, whichever is lower.

Of those, 152 were reduced to meet the tax cap for a total of $286.5 million.

“The practice run made me nervous, but after that, it was easier than I thought,” said Dolecki, 21, a Villa Park native and one of seven semifinalists in the Mario Tricoci Mario, Make Me a Model competition.

Dolecki, a 2010 Willowbrook High School graduate and a welder by trade, entered the contest last month after being encouraged by his mother, Debbie.

“My girlfriends have said for years that he could be a model,” she said, adding she saw a television commercial advertising the competition.

Dolecki works as a welder at both Hi-Speed Welding Inc. in Westmont and American Metal Installers & Fabricators in Villa Park.

Roy Splingaire, owner of American Metal Installers & Fabricators, is Dolecki’s boss, but also a friend.

“He’s a nice kid and I’m just trying to help him along,”

Splingaire said, sitting next to Dolecki Monday afternoon in the shop.

As a senior at Willowbrook and a captain on the Warriors’ wrestling team, Dolecki was encouraged to put together a modeling portfolio and agreed to have professional photos taken. But from there, the portfolio sat dormant, Debbie said.

“Joe didn’t know where to go with the portfolio, but now it’s come full circle,” she said.

If it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be. If not, it was just a fun ride.”

Dolecki has made friends with several of the contestants, and said that it would be nice to make a career out of modeling if he were to go further in the competition.

“I didn’t know I looked that good,” he joked. “It’s been a good experience and it gets me out of the shop.”

Clara’s Pasta keeps family traditions fresh WOODRIDGE – Walking into Clara’s Pasta, I was greeted by friendly smiles and a palette of rich, warm colors giving the large restaurant a cozy feel.

While the long-running dining destination in Woodridge has built its reputation on fresh-made pasta and Italian cooking that’s been passed down for generations, it also has created a charmingly modern and inviting setting in its new location.

Dark woods and clean lines make the space appealing for an intimate dinner or a night out with the whole family.

My companion and I dropped by for an early dinner during the week, and were seated right away at a spacious booth.

Our cheerful waiter brought over warm rolls to dip in olive oil infused with spices and Parmesan cheese. I had to remind myself to save room for the rest of the meal.

Otherwise, I might have asked for another basket.

While my companion finished an appetizer of toasted “Old World” bread topped with diced tomatoes, Fontinella cheese and pesto called Bruschetta di Roma, I started on a house salad with Italian dressing. It was simple, but tasty.

For dinner, I ordered one of the house specialties, Cream of Chicken Pesto. Our waiter brought the large plate of sliced chicken, sun-dried tomatoes and roasted pine nuts sautéed in Clara’s fresh pesto sauce with a hint of cream.

The richly flavored treat is served over fresh angel hair pasta. I didn’t know which tidbit to try first, but with a piece of chicken on my fork, I swirled up some pasta and took a bite. Heavenly.

My companion was thrilled with all of the meatless options, and settled on the stuffed shells. He soon cleared his plate of the three large pasta shells filled with seasoned ricotta cheese topped with mozzarella and baked in homemade tomato sauce.

We were each happy with the pesto and tomato sauces we chose, but Clara’s also allows guests to choose from more than a dozen different homemade pastas and top them off with one of 12 sauces.

On a second visit, I imagine the spicy arribiatta marinara made with crushed red peppers, Tabasco and chopped garlic may end up on my plate.

The veal chop Parmigiana also sounded tantalizing.

Clara’s takes a 14-ounce, bone-in veal chop and grills it to medium. It’s served over marinara sauce and topped with golden brown mozzarella, Fontinella, Romano and Parmesan cheeses. Radiatori pasta and tomato sauce are served on the side.

Throughout dinner, our waiter always made sure we

had a refill on our soft drinks before we had a chance to ask.

We never needed to look for him, but he wasn’t a bother either.

While I’m a pesto fan, and Clara’s Cream of Chicken Pesto surpassed my expectations, I already have a few dishes I’d like to taste next time. Even without the entree, I’d go back

seasoned oil. I’m sure I could have eaten the entire basket myself.

Area schools experience winter success

The two high schools in Lombard, Glenbard East and Montini, each had a number of standout athletes and accomplishments. Before spring kicks into full gear, here’s a last look back at those winter successes for the Rams and Broncos this past season, in no particular order.

The Rams have been starting to build a strong wrestling program in recent years. Last year’s team set all kinds of school records, and this year’s squad was as good or better in many ways.

Five East wrestlers went to state this year, nearly matching the school record seven from a year ago. The Rams fared better in Champaign this time around. Carlos Fuentez was third at 106 pounds, and Olson was sixth at 126. Both left with all-state medals, something no Rams were able to do last year.

D’Andre Johnson, Josh Martin and Anfarnee Rodgers also wrestled at state. The Rams went a combined 11-10, which is a sharp improvement over the combined record of 5-12 last year.

“It was a great season of wrestling,” Olson said. “I did way better than all the other years I’ve wrestled.”

The end result was Montini’s fourth state title in the past four years. Seniors Sara Ross, Kateri Stone and Kelly Karlis led the program to four trophies in four years and three state titles.

Like Montini wrestling, they also will be moving up to the top class next year.

Montini, Willowbrook looking for repeat strong seasons pects the team to start just two seniors and three juniors with the rest being sophomores.

However, all of those players have at least a year of varsity experience.

“This is the first year that we don’t have a freshman starting since I’ve been here,” Costante said. “That’s a good thing. Every girl that’s starting on the field has been on varsity since their freshman year. We still might be young in terms of sophomores and juniors, but they all have experience.”

As for the seniors, Barrett is headed to play for Western Illinois. Ross is bound for IUPUI to continue her basketball career. Despite basketball being her priority and future focus, Ross still came out for one more year of softball, with some flexibility coming from the Montini coaching staff.

Costante is putting an emphasis on the conference season.

“We want to win conference, which we haven’t done in the past three years,” Costante said. “We have to get past the St. Francis jinx.”

Here’s a look at what the area teams should look like in the season ahead.

Outlook: Three all-conference returners should lead the Blazers this season. Senior infielders Crystal Marinelli and Danielle Ciaglia and junior outfielder Ari Renc make up the core of a team hoping to improve on a 4-8 record in the West Suburban Gold.

Juniors Kelly Delawder, Alex DiSilvio and Rachel Baumgartner and sophomore Carla Muell are also returning starters. “[We] return seven starters from last season, including all three all-conference players and the top three hitters in Marinelli, Renc and Ciaglia,” coach Mark Olson said. “We’re expecting strong seasons offensively and defensively from Delawder, DiSilvio, Muell and Baumgartner.”

Despite all the returners, many of the key players on the team are still younger. Senior Cori Cooney will play at catcher to join Ciaglia and Marinelli as senior starters.

Glenbard South, a power program. Simpson is fresh off a four-year career at the University of Illinois and wants to get the Rams to focus on small ball.

“Small ball is definitely important to the game,” Simpson said. “It depends on the situation and the team we’re playing. We do have some good hitters, and we do have some speedy runners, too.”

“It’s definitely going to set us up for the future, which I’m excited about,” Simpson said.

Simpson’s focus is on getting excitement back in the program.

“Coaching is definitely different than playing,” Simpson said. “Sometimes I wish I could play. I just want to give the girls the knowledge I’ve learned.”

Outlook: With five returning all-state players and nine returners in total, Montini looks to be a dangerous team in Class 3A this season.

Two-time all-state pitcher Lauren Trojnar is back for her junior year in the circle.

Hitters Sara Ross, Cristina Barrett, Alyssa Sclafani and Isabell Alexander also were all-state selections last year.

Other returners include Morganne Evans and Emily Lezcano. Evans will move from right field, where she played the last two seasons, to third base.

Outlook: Armed with talented juniors Alyssa Ressinger and Sam Schmidt and a number of returners, Willowbrook is hoping for another strong season.

The Warriors will have to replace Darian Pelsor, who was the team’s ace and a top hitter last year. However, her junior sister Delaney returns in the circle along with Montini transfer Zoe Dannenberg, who was on the Broncos’ varsity last year.

Schmidt, a Northern Illinois commit, and Ressinger give the Warriors a pair of powerful bats in the middle of the lineup. The team doesn’t feature many seniors but still has plenty of experience from the younger returning players.

How are you feeling about the team’s hot start?

It’s really exciting, especially coming out in the very beginning because we have a couple new players. It’s different playing with them, and I have a new forward playing up top with me so it’s different, but I’m getting used to it.

What’s the transition been like becoming more of the team’s go-to forward?

It’s more my responsibility to make sure we’re organized and to stay calm and not to make silly fouls up top to get us in trouble.

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – While the Glenbard Hockey team would have loved a different result, playing in the state championship game at the United Center for the second time in three years is no small feat.

In 2012, the squad beat Bartlett 2-1 in overtime to capture its first title. This time around, Glenbard fell 3-0 to Waubonsie in the Blackhawk Cup Combined Division final on March 20.

“The kids had a goal from day one and that was to get to the United Center, and they worked hard all season long to get that goal,” Glen-

bard coach Jason Hawkins said, “To get to that goal wasn’t easy. Being the No. 7 seed, we were the underdog in both the quarterfinal and semifinal, but we were able to pull through.”

Glenbard had played Waubonsie five times during the regular season, going 1-3-1, though two of the losses were by one goal.

“We knew we could play with them,” Hawkins said, “but they just had our number on [March 20]. I thought we outplayed them in the first period, but they scored with seven seconds left in the first and we had trouble rebounding after that goal.”

32-19-4. Matt Bosler topped Glenbard with 53 goals and 60 assists for 113 points.

Nick Pietro added 45 goals and 30 assists, and Matt Letmanski totaled 26 goals and 21 assists.

Other offensive contributors included Sam Weiss (19 goals and 24 assists), Ryan Kelly (13 goals and 31 assists), Chris Conklin (12 goals and 26 assists) and Connor Ruffolo (11 goals and six assists).

“Matt [Bosler] and Nick were the two main guys who put the puck in the net,” the coach said. “But what made us successful late in the season was we got scoring from all of the lines. We got more balanced

as the year went along.”

Joel Mayo, who was in net during the playoff run, finished with 12 wins on the year. Sean Mitchell recorded 13 victories in goal, and Jim Bertane had seven.

The defense in front of the netminders was led by the duo of Kevin Gould and John Bertane.

“Joel was the back-up goalie on the team two years ago,” Hawkins said. “He didn’t get to play in those state tournament games, but toward the end of this year he really stepped up his game. You could tell this year was his time.

“And Kevin and John were our top defensive pairing this season. We matched

them up against the other team’s top line when we could, and they did a phenomenal job.”

The team will lose 11 players to graduation.

“That’s a lot, but we do have seven returning players and one of our goalies,” Hawkins said.

“Having that chance for a state championship will motivate these players even more, and hopefully some of the guys from the JV team will step up and we’ll get back there.

“It’s great for our program. We had great fan support throughout the state tournament, and it was good to get the buzz out about our program.”
