MATTHIESSEN
State Park
Just a stone’s throw southwest of Starved Rock State Park lies Matthiessen State Park, a scenic oasis that transports you from wildflower-dotted prairies to the depths of Ice Age-carved dells, replete with cascading waterfalls and moss-covered canyon walls. Matthiessen exudes an aura of timelessness, its milelong canyons sculpted over

centuries by erosion, revealing mesmerizing geologic formations.
Established in the late 19th century by La Salle’s zinc magnate Frederick William Matthiessen as a private sanctuary, originally dubbed Deer Park for its abundant deer population, the park continues to offer unparalleled opportunities for wildlife encounters in LaSalle County.

Matthiessen’s trail network caters to hikers of all skill levels, providing access to panoramic views of the majestic Cascade Falls and the awe-inspiring Giant’s Bathtub. The trails along the bluffs offer gentle gradients, perfect for novice hikers or families, while also serving as prime routes for horseback riding

enthusiasts in the Starved Rock vicinity.
While the challenging trails weaving through the dells may test your mettle, they also reward adventurous souls with unparalleled vistas of geological wonders. Boasting seven waterfalls, including a towering 45-foot drop separating the upper and lower dells, Matthiessen’s water features come to life depending on rainfall, making spring an optimal season for exploration.

Navigating Matthiessen entails traversing stepping stones, wading through shallow creeks, and meandering along narrow sandstone-lined pathways, punctuated by occasional staircases leading into the dells. With its labyrinthine sandstone canyons and dense forest canopy, Matthiessen offers a stark contrast to Starved Rock’s sprawling trails and lofty bluff overlooks, beckoning visitors to immerse themselves in its natural splendor.

BUFFALO ROCK State Park

American Bison

Nestled along the northern banks of the Illinois River, Buffalo Rock State Park offers a harmonious blend of rustic prairie trails and captivating cliffside panoramas, making it a cherished haven in LaSalle County’s landscape. With a rich tapestry of history, this park has
witnessed the presence of Indigenous American tribes, served as a sanctuary for religious groups, and even housed a tuberculosis sanatorium during the early 20th century. Today, it stands as a truly unique destination, seamlessly weaving together the realms of fine art and conservation.
Situated just 3 miles west of Ottawa, Illinois, Buffalo Rock has long been a favored destination for picnics and serves as an ideal terrain for novice hikers. The park beckons with two distinct trails, each offering a unique journey: the River Bluff Trail winds alongside the Illinois River, providing ample opportunities for birdwatching, while the Woodland Trail immerses visitors in the serene

beauty of trees, wildlife, and the striking “Effigy Tumuli” mounds crafted by visionary earthworks artist Michael Heizer. Drawing inspiration from Indigenous American burial grounds, these monumental sculptures, depicting five colossal animals including a snake, turtle, catfish, frog, and water strider, offer a glimpse into the region’s cultural heritage.
Perched atop two riverfront observation decks, guests are treated to a rare southward-facing vista of the Illinois River, offering a perspective unique to Buffalo Rock among the parks in the area.
Buffalo Rock is also home to two majestic American Bison, Cocoa and Hope, gracefully grazing in their designated
enclosure opposite the park’s baseball diamond. Early risers are rewarded with the opportunity to witness the bison’s morning feeding ritual, often accompanied by the tranquil embrace of morning fog enveloping the Illinois River.

ILLINI State Park
Nestled along the Illinois River in Marseilles, Illini State Park is a serene public space offering guests the perfect place to hold a picnic or family gathering. This 510-acre park boasts not only incredible views of the river, but also 100+ picturesque campsites, a boat ramp for easy river access and ample places for anglers to fish for Crappie, Bass, Bluegill and Catfish.
Be sure to pay Illini a visit in Winter, when the park’s ice skating pool has frozen over, and the large sledding hill is covered in snow. During this season, you can also cross-country ski on the park’s flat graded trails, then warm-up in their cozy shelter. During the Fall, the park’s a birder’s paradise, attracting scores of migrating songbirds like Vireos, Warblers and Thrushes.

You’ll also find The Illinois Fallen Soldiers Tree Memorial, a unique living monument celebrating the lives of the soldiers lost in Iraq and Afghanistan. This site features over 250 Oak Trees spread across a 2.5 acre plot of land, each celebrating a soldier.

COUNTY Parks
LaSalle County is also home to two spectacular county-operated parks. These parks boast some of the regions’ signature prairie and forest paths, alongside other great amenities like fishing ponds, horseback riding trails and two brand new playgrounds offering modern kid-friendly equipment. Here’s a look at these great lesser-known parks:
CATLIN PARK
2560 East 1251st Road Ottawa
Mountain bikers, hikers, birders, plantsmen, mycophiles, joggers, photographers, naturalists, cross country skiers, families, and more are welcome daily.
Catlin Park’s 333 acres are a mix of pine and deciduous forests, prairie grasses, rugged ravines, winding stream beds, deer in abundance, wild turkeys, birds, squirrels, and rabbits. The park’s well-organized trail system hosts 14 distinct trails plus numerous connector trails that course throughout the park’s habitats, including streams and ponds.
Bathed in broken light from hundred-year-old Chinkapin Oaks explorers the likes of Marquette, Joliet, and Robert de la Salle stood, with a grand
prairie to their backs, looking down at a vast valley carved by the slow meandering Inoka Siipiiwi, the Illinois River. It’s certain the beauty they beheld was unlike any European explorers had seen before. Surely, they stood on the very clay bluffs that define Catlin Park.
Donated to LaSalle County by its namesake, Catlin occupies the transition zone from the Grand Prairie natural division to the upper Mississippi/Illinois River bottomlands. Explore the abundance of aquatic flora and fauna in the wetlands and lowland creek. Catlin is home to many unique plant species, such as the once abundant Chinkapin Oak or the rare Green Dragon, and a keen eye may find an Orchid or two.
Exploring the park will also

yield sightings of Piliated Woodpeckers, Kingfishers, Hawks, Eagles, Turkeys, and an abundance of song birds. Catlin Park truly is a hidden gem in the landscape of North Central Illinois.
Equestrians are encouraged to bring their horses to explore the miles of groomed park trails. The LaSalle County Parks Department maintains a dedicated horse trailer parking lot and a 120 x 160 horse arena at Catlin Park.
The park also features four covered pavilions with picnic

Tips HIKING
DON’T LITTER
Do your part to keep the parks looking nice! There are ample waste receptacles scattered throughout the parks, be sure to keep any waste you generate on the trail inside your bag until you find one.
STAY ON THE TRAILS
Venturing off trails at any of Illinois’ State Parks is strictly forbidden, and for good reason. There are countless sharp drop offs, ravines, and dangerous plants off the trails. Admire the beautiful sights from only the clearly marked trails.
DRESS RIGHT
Wear well fitted shoes, preferably hiking boots with good traction. Dress appropriately for the weather, always anticipate it being cooler inside the canyons at Starved Rock and the dells at Matthiessen.

BRING PROVISIONS
Hiking can be exhausting, and many hikers underestimate how much water they’ll drink out on the trails. Plan ahead and bring extra water and trail snacks for you and your fellow hikers.
BRING A PHONE
These parks are large, and you can go long distances without seeing another hiker while out on the trails. Be sure to bring a cell phone so you can call for help in case of an emergency.
BRING A LEASH
Pets are always welcomed at LaSalle County’s state parks, but they must be kept on a leash, for their own safety.
