s parks and natural areas in Illinois reopen, people who’ve been itching to cure their coronavirus cabin fever have been getting back to nature – and they’ve been heading to one of the state’s premier parks to do it. Mississippi Palisades State Park is a towering presence in Northwest Illinois, and one of the best places in the state to enjoy the lay of the Land of Lincoln in all its forms and splendor – from intimate corners of the world to majestic peaks where the world is at your feet. The once-wild land has been tamed a bit, but not so much that it’s lost its beauty, or its edge.

The 2,500-acre park near Savanna is a perfect spot for people of all ages who want to enjoy nature, from a leisurely stroll to a hearty hike, or a day trip to an overnight stay. You can take a stroll, hike the trails or climb the rocks, and if your focus is on nature photography, you’d be hard pressed to find a better place to see the world through a lens. Located near the confluence of the Mississippi and Apple rivers, about 15 miles west of Lake Carroll, the park is known for towering bluffs, expansive river views, maintained trails, and perfect picnicking spots, all in a peaceful setting where you can rejuvenate the spirit while surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature. The park also serves as a living history lesson. It takes its name from its most stunning features – palisades are a line of high, steep cliffs commonly seen along a river – and in making their way across untamed land, Native American pathfinders sought the paths of least resistance nearly a thousand years ago. Today, hikers can follow in their footsteps, traversing some of the same trails those early explorers took. Elsewhere, paved roads take visitors through the park, some of which feature steep climbs and descents, and locations to explore are clearly marked along the way. The park was recognized as a Natural National Landmark by the U.S. Interior Department in 1973; a stone monument near the a pavilion built by the Civilian Conservation Corps marks this designation. Picnic tables are spread throughout the park, some in sun and some in shade, but all beckoning for visitors to sit and let time slow down in the comforts of the natural world. Mississippi Palisades State Park is home to 11 marked trails in a 15-mile trail system, with varying degrees of ease and difficulty, including some that are handicap accessible. The park has 241 Class A and B campsites, which are very much in demand right now, especially as Illinois continues its phased reopening. Electrical hookups are available at 110 sites, and showers and restrooms are nearby, open to the public through Oct. 31. Two primitive youth camping sites are available, and reservations for all camping accommodations can be made at ReserveAmerica.com. Site Superintendent Jay Nottrott has noticed an uptick in campers and visitors since the park began welcoming back guests in late May. He said he expects that trend to continue this summer as people have more time for recreation and relaxation. Park staff have been busy with a couple projects, including removing non-native species and restoring the nature preserve to a more natural state. Another large project in the works is one to clear trees on the creek near the campground. Thinning out the trees will help the creek’s flow and reduce flooding issues. Many state parks, including Mississippi Palisades, benefited from the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps, a program designed to help pull the U.S. out of the Great Depression and provide training and employment to Americans. Each person in the program was paid $30 a month, with $25 of it sent home to family, plus 3 meals a day, lodging, clothing, footwear, medical and dental care, and as an option, education. A pavilion and picnic area near the south entrance of Mississippi Palisades State Park offers guests a relaxing spot to stop for a break or a bite to eat.
The park’s myriad natural features are its main draw. Limestone caves lurk below the landscape while otherworldly rock formations dot the surface. One, Indian Head, is visible from state Route 84 and bears a remarkable resemblance to a grandfather figure of lore in its massive aquiline shape. The formation can be reached by trail, leading to another spectacular view of the Mississippi River and the bridge from Savanna to Sabula, Iowa. The Twin Sisters is another intriguing product of cen-
turies of erosion, a giant rock formation almost humanoid in shape. Nestled among the bluffs, it inspires awe and reflection, as the timelessness of the landscape comes into full view. For the more adventurous, the park is one of the few sites in the state to allow rock climbing. If fishing is more your speed, you’ll be hooked on the park – and you can fish all year round. Hunters also gather at the park each year for archery and firearm hunting for deer and wild turkey.

In the winter, the park offers cross-country skiing and sledding. The trails and ravines at the Palisades are a cherished component of the park, which is home to 11 marked trails in a rugged 15-mile trail system, with varying degrees of ease and difficulty. There are five trails in the northern part of the park that are wider and less strenuous than those in the southern part of the park – those are narrow and close to the bluff, and caution needs to be exercised, especially after rains. A site brochure can be picked up at the main office, complete with a map for navigation. The North System trails include High Point at 1.5 miles and Aspen at 1.7 miles; in the South System is the Sentinel at 1.0 miles, and Oak Point, with a surfaced trail that is handicap accessible. There is also Ozzie’s Point, Louis’ Point, and Lookout Point, which all have surfaced trails leading to an overlook. Lookout Point is the local favorite, as evidenced by a deck on the bluffs with years of graffiti carved into the wood railings. The spectacular views offer an experience you won’t soon forget. Visible from this high point are the channels of the Mississippi River, with green islands of trees, barges in the throes of commerce, and migrating birds traversing the by-way. Eagles, pelicans, vultures and vari-
ous waterfowl and shorebirds may be spotted by the astute observer from high on the bluff. The park is also home to an abundance of other critters, such as wild turkeys, white-tailed deer, squirrels, skunks, red and gray fox, woodchucks, muskrats, and varieties of birds. Weasels, mink and badgers are known to make their home in the park, so a keen eye may lead to wonderful discoveries. The Sentinel Nature Preserve, a designated sanctuary for native plants and animals, and a prairie restoration project highlight the state’s commitment to tip the scales in favor of the balance to nature. Three miles south of the Palisades is the city of Savanna, which is a charming destination in itself (see the story beginning on page 12 for more about Savanna). Restaurants, grocery stores, fast food, a castle on a bluff, and a thriving Main Street with fascinating shops (including Frank Fritz of “American Pickers” fame), balances the solitude of nature with the comforts of modern civilization. Fishing and boating ramps are located across from the park, and the river access areas are free. If a weekend, weekday or week-long getaway is calling you, the Mississippi Palisades State Park is a great place to go to relax, rejuvenate and recharge – and who knows you may even get lost in the woods and find yourself in the process.

hen you get done enjoying Mississippi Palisades State Park, you might want to consider visiting nearby Savanna – especially if you’re looking for some adventure. The city, just down the road from the park on state Route 84, recently landed on the top 5 of one of USA Today’s 10 Best lists. Savanna was voted the No. 4 Best Small Town for Adventure in the U.S. in the reader’s choice contest. A panel of travel experts partnered with the national newspaper’s 10 Best editors to pick the initial nominees, and the top 10 winners were determined by popular vote. Now that the city is officially on the list, it can use the 10 Best logo on signage near the town’s entrances. “It’s such an honor and so exciting to be recognized,” said Mayor Chris Lain. “It’ll bring in a lot of people, and help the county and the region.” According to the contest’s website, “These 10 towns might be small – each has a population of fewer than 25,000 people – but they’re big on outdoor adventure, from hiking and mountain biking to kayaking and rock climbing.”

On USA Today’s 10Best.com website, one of the judges, Jacky Runice, said “Savanna, hugging the Mighty Mississippi and along the Bluffs of the Driftless area in Northwest Illinois, is the starting point for 60 miles of bike trails – the Great River Bike Trail – but it is also a favorite stop for motorcyclists.” Lain said he thinks the city’s “ExploreSavanna” marketing campaign helped raise its profile and get it in the running, but ultimately, it’s everything Savanna has to offer that landed it on the list. The river town, with a population of about 3,000, offers a historic downtown district, plus plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventure: hiking and exploring Mississippi Palisades State Park, biking the Great River Bike Trail, following the wine trail, playing at nearby golf courses, visiting the Ingersoll Wetlands Learning Center, and fishing, boating, kayak ing, and tubing on the lakes and rivers. ummer on the lake is filled with outdoor fun, from water sports on the waves to biking and hiking. But Angie Conklin, R.N., knows a summer day can go from fun to frightening quickly. Conklin is a certified nurse practitioner with Freeport Health Network. In addition to time working with pediatrics she has spent the past 13 years with a family practice, often caring for multiple generations of the same family.
“I care for the whole spectrum of life, including seeing children I’ve cared for after they were born who have now become parents themselves,” Conklin said. And with 25 years of caring for those in the area, she often reminds her patients that simple preventative steps can help them keep all ages feeling good and staying well.

“The key is to apply and reapply,” Conklin said. “It’s a simple preventative measure that’s accessible to all of us.” The American Dermatological Association recommends using sunscreens with a SPF of 30 or higher, and reapplying every couple hours is key as well as applying more often if playing in the water. Swimming and boating means the sun’s rays are reflecting off the water, and even on a cloudy day it doesn’t take long to get sunburn. “I’m a pale blond with blue eyes, so I’ve had my share of sunburns,” Conklin said. Sunburn can be painful and over time, multiple sunburns can lead to increased risk of problems, including skin cancer. “There are serious ramifications of having frequent sunburns,” Conklin said. Through the years she has treated patients for possible melanomas and reminds them to be alert for skin lesions that look unusual, change in size, shape or color, or grow larger than a pencil erasure. Any of these symptoms can be a sign of problems and she recommends a visit to the doctor to have it checked out.

For treating a sunburn she recommends soaking in a cool bath, and the sooner the better to reduce the heat and sooth the skin. If the burned skin has started to blister and the patient is feeling chills, headaches or a fever, she recommends medical attention as this can also be a sign of significant dehydration. “While we talk about the importance of prevention, it’s also important to know when to seek out medical care,” she said.
Another problem in the summer can be dehydration. While everyone’s busy having fun, it’s important to remember to keep drinking water and be alert for signs the body is dehydrated. “Our bodies do a real good job of reminding us when we need to drink,” Conklin said. A dry mouth and a slight headache can be early signs a person needs more water. Failing to stay hydrated, especially in warm weather or when combining summer fun with drinking alcohol, can lead to more serious complications. Conklin added that the elderly are especially vulnerable to dehydration.
While water is important, when dehydration begins the body also needs to replace electrolytes and she recommends keeping sports drinks, such as Gatorade, in the pantry as a way to help replace needed electrolytes. The daughter of local dairy farmers, Conklin was drawn to the medical field thanks to two important connections. The first, she said, was a wonderful farm veterinarian who took the time to answer a young girl’s many questions, and even invited her to help with exams and procedures. Conklin said she really enjoyed the scientific side to medicine. But she also understands it takes compassion. As a senior in high school she began assisting a woman who was wheel-chair bound. Conklin said she helped out around the house, preparing meals and helping care for the woman. She discovered her desire to care for others and the compassion it takes to help those in need. In addition to her patient care she also offers dietary assistance and weight management through New Day Weight Loss, where again she is an advocate for preventative medicine, in this case managing weight, as a way to stave off further medical complications.

Nearly 20 years ago they acquired the land and Peggy set to work learning viticulture, the study of growing grapes. She found vines sturdy enough to withstand our harsh Midwest winters and varied enough to produce a red and white wines. “We want to have a variety of different wines on our tasting sheet because everybody’s taste buds are different,” Peggy said. In 2003 Massbach became a commercial winery and not too long after opened a tasting room in downtown Galena. Visitors enjoy the scenic drive out to the vineyard, open yearround, where they can sit and sip, and if inclined, learn more about the fruits of the vine. “We have a great customer base,” Peggy said.

Peggy has relished her role in enology, the science of wine making, with creative takes including a summer-time favorite of watermelon wine, produced from watermelons harvested in nearby Thomson. Another summer favorite is the new wine slushy, which Peggy said has been very popular with visitors. Peggy manages the vineyard and its on-site tasting room, open daily. Husband Greg has his hands full as a doctor, but he still finds time to work the vineyard. Their three children have grown up in the business and today, ranging in age from 17 to 24, they continue to help out, from spring pruning to lending a hand in the shop.

enjoys sitting on the patio, chatting with Peggy and the friendly staff, including many who’ve been with the winery for several years. “Peggy is a delight and our customers love to go for wine tastings,” Vidinich said. Late summer and early fall is a great time to visit the winery as it nears harvest time. Massbach Ridge Winery will host its annual Pre-Harvest Festival Saturday, Aug. 22, which includes vineyard tours.
“Harvest time is a very fun time to visit,” Peggy said. “The grapes are so beautiful.” And for those who’ve always wanted a handson – make that feet-on – experience, the winery will host its annual Grape Stomp on Saturday, Sept. 26. Guests can climb into a barrel to help press the grapes. “For a lot of people this is something on their bucket list,” Peggy said, adding that in the past people have even dressed up for the occasion, reliving a favorite scene from the “I Love Lucy” television show. The vineyard’s wines also are available at several retail locations throughout northwestern Illinois (see the list of locations on page 22), and Massbach’s ships to Illinois and others states where allowed by law – you can order at the vineyard’s website. While managing the vineyard and its business requires wearing a number of different hats on any given day, ranging from chemist to book keeper, Peggy said she and the family love their business. She was raised on a local dairy farm. Though there have been difficult years – economic challenges and Mother Nature isn’t always kind – Peggy said she loves to see guests enjoy the fruits of their labor. “I feel very strongly our first product is this place, an environment where people can sit and enjoy the wine,” Peggy said.

tate records don’t grow on trees – unless you’re at the Byron Forest Preserve. In November 2017, the preserve bought a 160-acre plot of land, carved out of a 1,420-acre cattle and ranching operation – and managed to snag the state’s
biggest tree in the bargain. The Bald Hill Prairie Preserve sits between Leaf River and Mount Morris, about a half hour southeast of Lake Carroll. The land cost $652,000, but a $434,000 grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Foundation paid for the bulk of it.
It’s a prized addition to other properties managed by the forest preserve because of its topographical features, native prairie plants, two endangered raptor species, rare woolly milkweed, and gravel and sand deposits dating back to the ice age. At 925 feet above sea level, it’s the second-highest point in Ogle County, with a dramatic sloping of land and stunning scenic views. The preserve’s name dates back nearly 150 years when early settlers dubbed the top of the site as Bald Hill. At one time, ‘bald’ was used to describe a treeless area. These days, though, the preserve doesn’t quite live up to its name like it used to. While there’s still plenty of open prairie, a fair number of trees have reached for the sky through the years – and one of them has given it a pretty good shot at touching it. In addition to the aforementioned sloping landscape and stunning views the preserve is home to a big tree. A really big tree. Forget the treehouse, we’re talking tree apartment complex here. In fact, the eastern cottonwood tree at the preserve not only dwarfs another tall Ogle County icon, the Black Hawk statue, it’s a state record-holder. The 12-story tree tops the Illinois DNR’s Big Tree Register. But you might know it at first glance. With the rolling topography, the tree isn’t noticeable until a person crosses over to a ravine and looks down upon the behemoth. “When we first saw it, there was all kinds of brush around it,” said Todd Tucker, the preserve’s executive director, during a 2018 interview. “We cleared the brush and said ‘Oh, my gosh, this is a big tree.’ Then I started measuring it with my arms outstretched and it took six lengths to get all the way around it. It had to be close to 30 feet in circumference.” Make that 28.5 feet around, and 122 feet tall, Because it’s sitting at the base of the ravine at 750 feet of elevation, though, it doesn’t even reach the highest point of Bald Hill. That’s why it can’t be fully seen without getting up close. It’s also a big reason the tree has lasted so long: It’s estimated to be 200 years old.

To preserve and protect nature The Bald Hill Prairie Preserve is at 5502 N. Silver Creek Road in Mount Morris. It’s one of nine in the Byron Forest Preserve District. The preserve features a primarily open habitat consisting of original prairie and pasture grasses. A portion of the large south hill has an oak savanna with beautiful large bur oaks. It’s open for passive recreation. Activities allowed include hiking, running, bird watching, picnicking, snow shoeing, and cross country skiing. Bald Hill is located at the north end of Silver Creek Road, to the north of
West Grove Road. The Byron Forest Preserve District more than doubled the size of Bald Hill in 2019, thanks to an $837,600 grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation. The original 160-acre preserve now boasts 384 acres, making it the third-largest preserve in the Byron district, behind only the Jarrett Prairie Nature Preserve, with 641 acres, and the Stephen J. and Deirdre Nardi Equine Prairie Preserve, with 557 acres.
The preserve is home to a rare gravel hill prairie ecosystem and the land addition protects the gravel hill prairie and oak savannas on the south slope of Bald Hill and provides additional open land to the east of the current preserve. This hilly open prairie land provides a habitat for a variety of wildlife, most importantly for ground-nesting birds. Rare grassland bird species seen on site include bobolinks, eastern meadowlarks, Henslow’s sparrows, short-eared owls, and northern harriers. Since Bald Hill opened to the public in 2018, it has become the second most visited preserve in the Byron Forest Preserve District. “The hills protect it from lightning, and at the low elevation it gets plenty of water,” Tucker said. Eastern cottonwood trees need a lot of water, and are usually found along streams and ponds. The Bald Hill champ’, however, gets its tall drink of water from runoff from the gravel hill, the result of glacier activity thousands of years ago. Since 1962, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources has kept tabs of the state’s towering trees with its Illinois Big Tree Register, the goal of which is “to appreciate, discover, and record the largest native tree species in the state.” To be considered the state Big Tree Champion champ, measurements must be sent to the Illinois state forester, who scores the tree based upon circumference, height, and part of the tree’s crown width. Ogle County’s eastern cottonwood has been so crowned, dethroning a bald cypress in Pulaski County in southern Illinois that is 64 feet tall, 34.5 feet around and with a branch spread of 37 feet. When news first got out, Tucker hand his hands full fielding media interviews. “The Chicago Tribune and Sun-Times contacted us, along with the Rockford TV stations,” he said. “NPR did a piece on it and it went to the national feed. I think this will do a lot for tourism.” In an area already rich in protected lands, it also will give people one more piece of nature to enjoy.
In 2001, the Arbor Day Foundation conducted a national vote on its website to give people a chance to weigh in on what they thought should be the national tree. While the mighty oak won, the cottonwood was among 21 contenders. Here’s part of what the foundation had to say about the tree. More can be found at shawurl.com/3995. “The cottonwood – also known as the poplar – is a tall tree with a spreading crown, named for its cotton-like seeds. The diverse poplar family includes the quaking aspen, which boasts the widest range of any North American tree, and the Plains cottonwood, which was the only tree many early settlers met as they forged westward through America’s prairies. …. Many cottonwoods grow from 70 to 100 feet tall, and the tree’s quick growth rate and adaptability to many soils and climates have made it an age-old friend to the American people. Few sights were more welcome to America’s early pioneers than the cottonwood. As they pushed westward with their wagons, [they] found food for their livestock in the tree’s leaves, as well as shade for themselves and timber for their dwellings. ... Cottonwood trunks provided dugout canoes, and the tree’s bark was used to produce both forage for horses and a bitter medicinal tea. And in regions with few trees, the very noticeable cottonwoods often served as gathering places and trail markers, and as sacred objects for several Plains tribes. Today, cottonwood is most commonly used in making plywood, matches, crates, boxes, and paper pulp.”

Though the Grant Home had to roll up the welcome mat for a while, it’s ready for some house guests again

llinois may be the Land of Lincoln, but Honest Abe isn’t the only U.S. President who once called this Midwestern state home. Before Ulysses S. Grant became a legendary Civil War general, and later helped bring together a nation torn apart by the Civil War, he was a clerk at his father’s tannery business in Galena. The 18th president moved to The Prairie State in the spring of 1860, where he and wife Julia rented a modest brick home in Galena while he worked for his father’s business. Grant would spend only a year in Galena, but during that time, the wheels were set in motion that would eventually take him on a historic journey to the highest ranks of the military, and the highest office in the land.

If you’re looking to visit the Land of Grant, it’s only about a 30-minute drive, northwest of Lake Carroll. While there, you also can take in the sights, sounds and tastes of a town that serves up natural beauty and authentic history, events and attractions, specialty shops, and plenty of places to grab a bite to eat. It’s no wonder the city attracts nearly a million visitors a year. The site that landed Galena in the history books, the U.S. Grant Home, was newly built in 1860 – originally as a residence for the City Clerk – when Grant moved to the town in the spring of 1860 and rented the home for $100 a year. He left the following spring to serve in the Army, rising through the ranks and eventually playing a key role in the Union victory. He returned to a hero’s welcome in Galena in 1865, and was presented the house as a gift by a group of local Republicans who had bought the home for $2,500. Though he would return to Galena only occasionally after being elected president, last visiting in 1880, he continued to use the home as his official political and voting address, remarking of Galena in 1873, “although it is probable I will never live much time among you, but in the future be only a visitor as I am at present, … I hope to retain my residence here … I expect to cast my vote here always.”

Caretakers maintained the house, ensuring it was always ready for the President’s visits, and one local newspaper at the time reported that the home was “in excellent order and ready for occupation at any time,” adding that “visitors are always admitted.” Today, visitors are still admitted, and the home recently reopened, on July 15, after being closed due to the pandemic. According to the home’s website,“the restored U. S. Grant Home is a two-story brick structure. The first floor consists of entry hall, parlor, dining room, library, kitchen with pantry, and staff room. The second floor contains five bedrooms, one with a connecting dressing room. All of the rooms are decorated and furnished to represent a mid-1860s appearance. Many of the furnishings belonged to the Grant family. In 1960 the Home was designated a National Historic Landmark and in 1966 was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.” Since reopening, the Grant Home – owned and managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources — is taking several precautionary measures to cope with COVID-19. “We’re usually open year round,” said site manager Terry Miller. “This year, with COVID-19, things are a little different. Being a state-owned facility, we took direction on everything from the Governor’s office.” The Grant Home has limited its hours to Sunday through Wednesday on a reduced schedule, taking on six tours per day. Tours are first-come first-serve, with no reservations, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The size of tour groups are also limited to a maximum of 10 people per tour and guests must wear masks. Miller said social distancing guidelines also will be enforced while on the property. “The Grant tour will be given outdoors,” Miller said, “and guests will be allowed to walk through the home while social distancing. Congregating inside the home in any room will be prohibited and frequently touched surfaces will be disinfected between each tour.” The U.S. Grant Historic Sites feature more than just the president’s home.

The house is part of the three-block Grant Home Historic Neighborhood, and also includes several small mid-19th century homes. There’s also Grant State Park, south of the Grant Home, where visitors can have a picnic and see Long House, a circa 1851 log cabin that was moved to the site from nearby Elizabeth in 1976. There, house guests can see what a typical mid-19th-century settler’s home in Jo Daviess County looked like. Other Grant-related sites include the DeSoto House Hotel, at 203 S. Main St. Not only is it the oldest operating hotel in Illinois – opening in 1855 – rooms 209 and 211 served as Grant’s presidential campaign headquarters (for more things to do in Galena, see the story on page 35). Elsewhere, the Washburne House was home to Grant’s political adviser and former U.S. congressman Elihu B. Washburne. However, visitors will have to wait to see the inside of this historic building as it remains closed for the season due to the pandemic.
