here’s a sturdy, built-to-last quality in old furniture, but Leslie Hilderbrant will agree that sometimes your grandma’s buffet no longer has that look you desire.

“If you have heirloom furniture that isn’t the color or the wood tones you like, you can

Rouse sells Fusion Mineral Paint at Stonehouse Market. She selected the brand for its ease of use and ecofriendly features.

“I wanted it to be simple, easy to use and not complicated,” says Rouse, who researched and tested different brands before settling on Fusion, which has no volatile organic compounds or odor.

Whether using it to paint kitchen cabinets, update furniture or create a piece, she says Fusion, with a built-in topcoat, usually takes just one or two coats for sufficient coverage. She says the Tones for Tots line offers great colors and a nontoxic paint that can be safely used on a crib or baby toy.

Another option for furnishings is Dixie Belle, a chalk mineral paint that adheres

to most surfaces, explains Shannon Heckman. She and her mother, Phyllis Barber, own Happenstance Goods in downtown Oswego, featuring vintage furniture as well as providing custom painting and selling Dixie Belle paints and products.

Heckman uses Dixie Belle on her custom paint projects and recommends it for her customers. “We found it the easiest to work with, and it comes in a variety of colors with accessories, glazes and embellishments too,” Heckman says.

This past year she has seen a tremendous interest in the paints, as more people are experimenting with their own projects, from refurbishing old pieces to trying creative projects around the house.

“Everybody needed to find a little creative outlet, and paint is the perfect way to do it,” she says.

O

ne morning at the start of a bygone birthday celebration, Michelle MuellerCundiff asked her daughter, Amber, what she wanted to do.

Amber Mueller hardly hesitated. As many preteens might, she preferred to take a ride. But forget those pesky ponies.

“Let’s go look at model homes!” she decided.

Thus forged a path to the inseparable motherdaughter duo’s ultimate venture. This month, The Michelle & Amber Team hailed seven years as licensed Realtors with Coldwell Banker in Yorkville, work that allows them to be close while affording the ability to stay on the move — just like their prospective clients.

“Something exciting, something different every day,” Amber says. “Neither one of us are, I think, desk people, where we could do a 9-to-5 thing over and over every day.”

A yellow metallic element also played a role in creating what Michelle and Amber considered a golden opportunity.

After operating a day care service for much of her professional life, Michelle shifted careers and became a gold buyer. Steady economic improvement following the 2008 recession kept gold prices falling, however, and the company closed.

“And Amber said, ‘Mom, you know, we’ve always

been interested in real estate. Let’s just do it,’” says Michelle, whose husband owns The Brush Works Painting Company in Oswego.

So they did, and success and satisfaction soon followed.

“Me being in day care for 26 years, I know how important a home is for a family,” Michelle says, “and knowing that we can help someone meet their dreams in real estate, to be a homeowner … and then the joy of being there at the closing table when they get their keys, there’s nothing like it.”

Adds Amber: “The American dream, right? To have your own home. Property. Freedom.” She pauses before adding, “Debt. Lots of debt. But worth it.”

Michelle and Amber are conferenced in on separate cellphone lines, but the natural laughter that follows the remark suggests a shared atmosphere.

Numerous client testimonials on the team’s Coldwell Banker webpage attest to their connection, calling Michelle and Amber knowledgeable, patient and professional, among other attributes that made one couple setting out to buy a first home together “feel like their only priority in the process.”

Both mother and daughter speak of striving to remove the stress from home buying and selling. They aim to customize each client’s needs, understanding the circumstances of those in the market for the first time versus more seasoned buyers. The team serves those looking for homes within a 90-minute driving

radius of Yorkville.

Michelle credits the thorough training and family atmosphere of Coldwell Banker as driving forces behind why she and Amber picked the agency. Still, it’s a wonder to think the process started, at least informally, with a birthday query.

“I was telling a friend this,” Amber says. “I was getting into real estate without even realizing what I was doing and all the homework that I was already doing for the job.”

Michelle especially enjoys being meticulously helpful with paperwork, while Amber relishes working with clients hands-on. Complementing one another is a joy. So, too, are compliments from clients who appreciate working with a mother and daughter team.

“Oh, yeah. I think they get a kick out of it,” Michelle says. “And of course, I love hearing, ‘Oh, you’re sisters?’ And I say, ‘Bless your heart.’”

“She loves that,” Amber adds.

Cottagecore

This trending decor aesthetic calls to mind a peaceful, romantic style of living

ottagecore — never heard of it? You’re not alone. It’s a lifestyle and decorating trend born of a simpler life and fueled by a pandemic that forced us to hunker down, make do and get creative.

Also called farmcore, countrycore and a bevy of other epithets (think naturecore, warmcore, etc.) cottagecore isn’t new. Both

social media and the pandemic have served as catalysts to expand the movement, which includes “nesting” in place, gardening, baking, keeping busy and making do.

“I love it so much,” says Lindy Karasch, an Illinois Certified Staging Consultant and owner of Lindy Expressions Home Staging & Decorating in Yorkville. She’s also licensed in real estate. “A lot of people are watching their money, whether they’re selling or loving

their home more and want to spruce it up.”

Cottagecore allows them to do so quickly and inexpensively. Think recycle, upcycle or whatever word you use to describe using what you have. Karasch, a country dweller herself, still keeps books from the ’80s featuring romantic and cottage-style decorating.

No contracts required. people have been during the pandemic, being comfy and cozy is a nice thing,” Karasch says. “A lot of people welcomed that and a simpler, more family-oriented lifestyle.

Cottagecore is not necessarily super neat and perfect. Lived-in is all about relaxing. A lot are working from home. They want the sun coming in the windows and light, flowy curtains.”

So, what are the elements of cottagecore? “To me it’s a bit of a European-influenced, American countryside with a little romance and fantasy mixed in,” says Karasch.

“It’s a ‘nappable’ sanctuary, colorful flowers in makeshift containers, the use of the natural materials, such as wood and stone or exposing old brick, soft fabrics and textures, cotton and linen. I have an old enameled, weathered vase and I put eucalyptus and lamb’s ear in it.”

Karasch also describes these as cottagecore: hardwood floors with

throw rugs; soft colors in several noticeable, fluffy layers, including a thick comforter and chunky knit throws; and too many pillows on an old, wrought iron bed. Pale greens, soft browns and grays all fit the theme.

Use what you have; take, for instance, secondhand furniture. “Some strip the pieces and refinish them or reupholster or paint them,” notes Karasch. “It’s a very inexpensive way to get ‘new’ furniture, especially with people being laid off or looking to save a few bucks.”

Vintage light fixtures are also big, notes Karasch. “There are so many beautiful ones out there,” she says, adding a note of caution: “Be careful.

“A big part of cottagecore is personalization, proudly displaying something you brought back to life and saved from the landfill,” says Karasch.

ike so many other businesses, The Rustic Fox saw a change in plans when stay-at-home orders went into effect last spring. Plans for the grand opening were postponed — but when the North Aurora store finally opened its doors in the fall, it found social distancing guidelines worked in its favor.

“People say they feel comfortable shopping here because of the size and layout of the store. There’s a lot of ability to socially distance while shopping,” says Nicole Kolosowski, director of marketing.

The 20,000-square-foot indoor market features 120 vendors renting out space over 143 booths to showcase their wares. Many vendors have been there since the store

opened last September, and others rotate in and out.

The artisan market’s main focus is home decor with refinished and vintage furniture. The diversity of vendors also includes plants, art, clothing, health, beauty, jewelry and more. “It’s like a real-life Etsy,” says Kolosowski. “We have a little something for everyone here with a wide selection of offerings.”

Even the vendors’ vignettes serve as a source of inspiration to shoppers. For example, one vendor’s display featured a rake on top of a window to use as a valance. “People say they never

imagined doing that with a product. It’s very outside the box — not something you’d see every day,” says Martin Bernal, director of operations.

It’s that sense of creativity that really showcases the treasures found inside The Rustic Fox. “All the vendors take pride in their merchandise and how they present their wares,” notes CEO Lisa Asturrizaga.

“People come in for a specific item and leave with something they weren’t expecting to find. They’re pleasantly surprised by the variety of items we offer in the store,” says Bernal.

ucculents are a popular and versatile plant that have become a growing decorative trend among homeowners. They are simple to maintain and can live for years; some species are even associated with certain health benefits, and others help purify your indoor air.

This summer, grace your windowsills with this hardy greenery, and balance your home’s aesthetic while keeping in mind a few tips to ensure the health and prosperity of your succulent plants.

Before you journey to your favorite local nursery to make your selection, consider the type of atmosphere you wish to establish in and around your home. Penny Monkemeyer from Winding Creek Nursery and Garden Center in Millbrook specifies three succulents to start with on the inside: the jade plant, hens and chicks, and burro’s tail succulents.

att Verde acknowledges that a few days before Christmas 2020 may not have been the best time to open a new restaurant.

But, as Verde describes it, his new establishment, 113 Main in Oswego, was more about meeting a need in his own neighborhood than about rolling the dice.

“Oswego’s been needing and wanting a new independent restaurant for some time,” says Verde. “We knew that.

“And we’ve been really well received.”

Since that opening in the closing days of 2020, the restaurant, located at — you guessed it — 113 Main St., has generated a lot of buzz for itself and the rapidly transforming downtown in just a few short weeks.

Partnering with Mike Mann and Rick Tollefson of Yorkville’s Imperial Investments, Verde describes 113 Main’s concept as “unique but approachable, American cuisine in an open-air, warehouse-like setting.”

The building features accents of rich wood and brick throughout.

And the wall facing Main Street is outfitted with three large, garage-door style windows that can be raised when the weather permits, creating a patio-like ambiance on warm evenings.

Crafted and curated with executive chef Terry Kaminski, the food lineup features a range of creative appetizers, entrees, soups, salads and sandwiches, all prepared from scratch.

Verde says standout items on the menu include appetizers like short rib poutine (French fries and cheese curds, topped with gravy, scallions and short rib) and steamed buns (think crispy chicken, cucumber, carrot, onion, gochujang, cilantro and sesame). Entrees include ribeye steaks, scallops, salmon and pork chops.

Those in the mood for finger foods can opt for a selection of handmade burgers (the popular 113 Burger features a pepper-crusted patty, applewood smoked bacon, blue cheese and a roasted garlic aioli); a roster of specialty tacos; or a lineup of sandwiches, including a lobster and crab cake, blackened mahi or buttermilk chicken sandwich, among others.

For sides, you’ve got the choice of truffle fries, fried asparagus, crispy sprouts with bacon and soy ginger, four-cheese macaroni and cheese,

loaded mashed potatoes or green beans.

If you’re hoping to try one of Verde’s favorite items, go for the scallops, buttermilk chicken sandwich or the steak frites.

The menu is complemented by the restaurant’s array of craft cocktails and list of craft beers.

Many selections list come from other craft breweries in the Chicagoland market, Verde says.

But the item that takes the top spot? 113 Main’s Old-Fashioned. “On our lineup? That’s the winner, if I have to choose,” he says, laughing.

Opening 113 Main has been in the works since 2019, according to Verde, who has been in the restaurant business for 25 years and has for years operated a restaurant in Westmont.

After living in Oswego for the last 10 years, Verde says he believed it was time to bring his latest concept to life in his own backyard. He and his partners have also doubled down on their investment in the community by redeveloping the site of Oswego’s former Dairy Hut ice cream shop, now the Dairy Barn.

July 2020 was the date 113 Main had been expected to open, but the pandemic delayed the opening by six months. While public health restrictions imposed by the state remained in place, Verde says they believed they needed to move forward. “Construction was finished. We had hired our staff back in September. Everything just kind of came to a head,” he says. “We believed the time was right to open the doors.”

The restaurant now employs 50 people. It can seat 150 people when full and under normal operating conditions. Capacity is reduced to abide by public health recommendations, Verde says.

“It wasn’t all ideal,” he adds. “But we’ve been very well received, and we can’t wait to welcome everyone in this spring and summer, and beyond.”  113 MAIN 113 Main St., Oswego 331-216-5133 www.113main.com

CAUGHT BETWEEN THE CROSSFIRE OF FASHION AND FUNCTION With Katie McCall, owner of Two Wild Seeds bakery

I

f I told you the food industry was glamorous, I’d be lying.

The perfect hair, manicured nails, crisp clothing and gleaming countertops often portrayed in magazines and on TV are a far cry from the literal blood, sweat and tears even a single day in a professional kitchen can summon.

Looking back, I never could have imagined that my 20-something self — a journalism grad in pursuit of a magazine writing career — would end up swapping stilettos for kitchen clogs to attend culinary school and later work for some of Chicago’s top restaurants.

It all started in 2009 when I moved to the city after graduating from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I spent the first year gallivanting around town in heels, latte in hand, 20 KENDALL COUNTY MAGAZINE

hailing cabs. I covered local fashion shows, rubbed elbows with celebrity chefs at restaurant openings and, naturally, fell victim to the fabulous shopping. In essence, I was (naively) living the Carrie Bradshaw dream every young, female writer craved.

But after a year of freelancing and working retail jobs to pay the rent, all I had to show was a handful of published articles and an overflowing closet. Seeking more structure, I scrolled through job listings on the website of Food & Wine Magazine and, shockingly, met every qualification for an associate writing position — albeit one: a culinary degree.

It was an unequivocal lightbulb moment. My passion for food ran deep, so with a leap of faith and my parents’ blessing, I enrolled in Le Cordon

Bleu’s two-year culinary program. On the first day of class, I carefully ironed and stepped into my new uniform...

Flowing skirts and tailored pants were now replaced with an oversized chef’s jacket, traditional “cravat” (or necktie) and one-size-fitsall pair of blue and white checkered pants that relentlessly ballooned at the crotch. My long hair was pulled into a tight bun beneath a beanie-style hat. My new handbag was a zippered knife kit, and chunky black clogs kicked my strappy heels to the back of the closet.

For weeks, I felt devoid of my femininity. Fashion had always been a form of self-expression, and now, this Michelin-man uniform was on repeat.

caffeinated, underpaid, exhausted and perpetually smelled of raw fish and butter. My once smooth hands grew cracked and dry; my arms now housed a sea of cuts and burns. At times, I barely recognized myself.

But as the months clicked on, I learned that how I looked was the least of my concerns; what mattered most was that I arrived at class 15 minutes early, prepped my station, sharpened my knives and worked hard — really hard.

For the first time ever, I felt a true sense of pride in my work, and oddly, it took stripping away the bells and whistles I’d previously valued to reveal a more authentic version of myself.

ROASTED BEET SALAD

My newfound skills and determination pushed me to the top of my class and ultimately landed me jobs working alongside some of the city’s best chefs.

I felt invigorated and like a weight had finally lifted.

Not only is this recipe nutritious, simple to prepare, full of flavor and beautiful — but it’s also a nod to my first professional cooking “injury.” I had just started culinary school and while pulling a pan of roasted beets from the oven, I singed the inside of my forearm on the screaming hot sheet tray.

Twelve years later, I can’t prepare beets without flashbacks of this silly story — and still have the scar to prove it!

Today, I couldn’t be prouder of my battle wounds; and as for my clothes, most of them have been boxed, donated, sold or given away to friends and family. And while I’m most comfortable in ripped jeans, a soft V-neck tee, apron, gym shoes and colorful headband — sometimes a girl just needs a pair of red pumps to get the job done.

SERVES 4 • 6-8 medium to large fresh beets (red, purple, golden, striped, etc.)

• 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

1 tablespoon honey 1 teaspoon water Salt and pepper to taste Feta cheese Fresh dill

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Scrub the beets clean and wrap each one in aluminum foil. Place them on a baking sheet and bake 40 minutes to 1 hour, or until a sharp knife can be inserted into the beets without resistance. Tip: If you have drastically different sized beets, consider using two baking sheets to separate the smaller and larger ones, as they’ll cook at different rates.

 Katie McCall is a bona fide Midwestern girl. Raised on four acres of rural property in Yorkville, she was taught to respect nature and all of its bounty. From foraging morel mushrooms in the woods to picking wild raspberries for homemade jam, Katie feels most at home when in nature and preparing food for others.

Once the beets are fully cooked and have cooled slightly, peel off the skins and rinse with cool water. Slice each beet with a sharp knife and arrange on a platter, overlapping colors for a stunning presentation.

In a small bowl, combine the mustard, lemon juice, honey, olive oil, water, and salt and pepper to taste. Whisk until emulsified and set aside.

Top the sliced beets with crumbled feta cheese and evenly drizzle the vinaigrette. Garnish with chopped fresh dill and a sprinkle of freshly ground black pepper.

Serve immediately, or cover and chill in the refrigerator to marinate. Enjoy!

SPRING CLEANING Totes: The word is no longer reserved just for storing your belongings in the basement

T

here are just certain moments that make us feel old.

For starters, there’s the moment you discover a “good night’s rest” is no longer the cure for what ails you.

Or the moment you realize that salt-and-pepper hair, which someone once told you would be so attractive, has gone almost entirely to salt, in a blink, leaving you confused why the visage of the man in the mirror seems so different from the man in the mirror in your memory.

Or the moment your well-worn lines from your favorite go-to cinematic masterpieces no longer have any meaning to half the people you know.

Or the moment Facebook tells you that kid you knew got married today, even though you could swear that kid was just 9 years old yesterday.

Or the moment you hear people half your age chuckle (if you’re lucky) because you said “Facebook.”

But for me, the moments have arrived mostly courtesy of new words, which have left me scrambling to consult the Google machine or (better still) the Urban Dictionary for translation assistance.

PRO TIP: If you have teenagers, or around teenagers, a quick spin through the Urban Dictionary can be an absolute lifesaver when eavesdropping. WARNING: Looking up a term in the Urban Dictionary serves as instant confirmation of your rapidly growing senior status.

The teens in my life have contributed a great deal of new verbiage to the old lexicon, some definitely useful (looking at you, “savage,” “shade” and “Bye, Felicia”), while others that

should be scrapped, posthaste. I could go the rest of my life without hearing someone declare how “turnt” they are or that some aspect of someone’s appearance is “on fleek.”

But there are few terms employed by whippersnappers these days that harsh my mellow like the word “totes.”

Perhaps it’s the utter laziness of it, as if saying “totally” is just too hard. Or the grating ability of the word to make someone, somehow, simultaneously sound both cool and infantile. Or perhaps it’s because every time I hear someone say “totes,” I think not of a bedazzled young person with everything on fleek — but rather of dust, must, Goodwill and Marie Kondo.

For the uninitiated, Marie Kondo is a so-called “tidying expert” who helped launched a fad of decluttering that swept the nation, if not the world, primarily through her Netflix series, “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo.” The premise behind the “KonMari” method is simple in theory: Go through your belongings, and ask if each item you find “sparks joy.” If it doesn’t, get rid of it.

There are, or should be, limits to the concept. I mean, the dog, the car and the washer/dryer often spark the opposite of joy (Consternation? Frustration?

Madness?), and they aren’t going anywhere. But overall, the concept earns a hearty thumbs-up from this dad and homeowner.

For confirmation, I need only take a quick jaunt down to our basement storage room, to take a long look at the racks and shelves full of Rubbermaid totes. It’s hard to think of a technological innovation — outside of splitting the atom, the internal combustion engine and online streaming — that has simultaneously produced such a boon and bane as the invention of plastic bins. “Totes,” if you will.

Properly lidded and stashed, they allow us to store anything, potentially for a lifetime, without fear of water, rodents or most any other forces of mayhem destroying the cargo. On the flipside, they allow us to store just about anything, potentially for a lifetime. And this has led too many of us to accumulate piles of these Pandora boxes in base-

ments, attics, closets, storage units and just about anywhere else they can be stuffed away, out of sight.

What’s inside? Sometimes your guess is as good as mine, a mystery solved only by daring the must and mildew, brushing off the dust and cracking the top, peering in like overly curious, about-to-be-vulcanized villains in an Indiana Jones flick. But rather than precious treasures and memories, too often we find the contents leave us puzzling over why we just didn’t get rid of this stuff years ago. Then, we suddenly feel little else but old and tired.

Old, because we just did the math, and realized how long we’ve kept this junk.

And tired, because now we know what must be done to reclaim our space — and, yes, our joy.

This spring, do yourself a favor. Head down to the basement, out to the garage, up to the attic, or over to those old closets. Transport a trunk- or truckload of items you haven’t moved in years (decades?) to Goodwill or the Salvation Army.

And, yes, take out the trash.

But spark that joy sooner, rather than later. Future you will thank you.

Because you and I both know we’re not getting any younger. And when you’re truly old, you know what is “totes” not “lit” or “on fleek?”

New Facebook group shows weekly support to Oswego businesses

The initiative to shop at small businesses has only grown in the last year, especially given pandemic-related shutdowns.

For Amanda Dill, this effort has become personal.

In late December, after hearing some chatter about some local businesses shutting down, she started a

Facebook group, Oswego IL Small Business Flash Mob. “What if I was able to get the whole community involved?” she says she remembered thinking.

Now at roughly 1,400 members, the group and concept “just kind of took off,” says Dill, who’s appropriately wearing a shirt with “Eternal Optimist” written on the front. Each week, she selects a locally owned Oswego business using a random

name generator. After giving a heads-up to the chosen business, she announces it to the group members, who then make a special effort to patronize the business from Friday to Thursday of the next week.

“You want to see the small business owners succeed because you know at the end of the night, they’re going home to a family like we are,” says Debra DeValdivielso, who joined almost immediately after the group began. She and her exercise friends went together to Board & Brush Creative Studio when the

creative space was chosen in midMarch. DeValdivielso made a wine tray and praised the shop for being warm and welcoming.

While group members go anytime that week, “flash mob” is still the correct term for the concept — Dill says each week sees up to a few hundred customers coming as a result of the group.

Her passion for getting local support hasn’t gone unnoticed.

“She’s a phenomenal woman,” DeValdivielso says. “She does so much community work.”

Group members also share information from other small businesses or post what they found on local shopping trips. Dill prompts the group to share, too: “Who had a chance to stop into Ginger Thomas Soap Company this week? What did you get? I’m going tomorrow so I need ALL of your recommendations!” she posted in mid-March. The post got 32 comments, including some personal thank you’s from the company.

eady or not — and you may be more than ready — the world is starting to come out of isolation with the increasing availability of COVID-19

vaccines. Scary? Perhaps. We’ve been so used to trying to protect ourselves and our loved ones that

it would be understandable if we had developed

a nervous tic much like Chief Inspector Dreyfus did as a result of his interactions with Inspector

If you are a baby boomer and remember these films, you may also recall Inspector Clouseau’s constant exchanges with his faithful associate, Cato, who was constantly springing out of hiding and assaulting Inspector Clouseau as part of a ritual to keep him on his toes. Our “Cato” today? Inflation.

inflation is defined as an increase in the general level of prices for goods and services. Deflation, on the other hand, is defined as a decrease in the general level of prices for goods and services. If inflation is high at, say, 10% as it was in the 1970s, then a loaf of bread that costs $1 this year will cost $1.10 the next year.

Regardless of your political orientation, a universal concern is that the $1.9 trillion stimulus package might lead to inflation, maybe even hyperinflation, which could be bad for your retirement. Put simply,

Worrying about inflation may seem to be a hollow cry of warning given recent history. With the Consumer Price Index (CPI) only increasing 1.2% during calendar year 2020, worrying about inflation may seem a bit farfetched. For those of us who lived through times of heightened inflation, however, the scars are enduring.

Although our firm does not expect inflation to swing back to historically high levels anytime soon, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell has repeatedly stated his position of welcoming an increase in the rate of inflation as the economy recovers.

With the size and scope of relief packages being unprecedented, there is a degree of uncertainty as to what the recovery will continue to look like as well as the effectiveness of traditional fiscal and monetary controls.

As a result, we continue to recommend a diversified portfolio with high-quality holdings. We suggest a continued overweight in quality equities with a tilt to value and to small capitalization equities with historically superior profit margins. We also suggest that up to 20% of your fixed income holdings be constituted of inflation correlated bonds. One of the most common assets in this category are Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS). TIPS are a type of Treasury security issued by the U.S. government and are indexed to inflation in order to protect investors from a decline in purchasing power. As inflation rises, TIPS adjust in price to maintain their real value. Including holdings like these in your portfolio will position you like a well-conditioned Inspector Clouseau.

When Cato (inflation) comes out of hiding and attacks, you’ll be in a great position to defend yourself!
