The most wonderful time of the year Get cozy with Hallmark holiday movies

Warm up from the chill outside with cozy new holiday programs. ‘Tis the season for Hallmark’s latest set of seasonal love stories on Hallmark, including “An Alpine Holiday,” airing Thursday, Dec. 4, and “Twelve Dates ‘Til Christmas,” premiering the next day, Friday, Dec. 5. Look for your seasonal favorites to stream on Hallmark+ postbroadcast.

The Hallmark festivities began all the way back in the middle of October, with new and favorite movies and series kicking off the holiday season early. Whether you haul out the decorations at the first sign of wintery weather or wait until Dec. 1, Hallmark has been ready to help set the holiday mood with near-daily premieres of seasonal programming.

The charm of the holiday season is turned up to the max with a destination celebration in a quaint village at the base of a mountain. In “An Alpine Holiday,” once-estranged sisters are brought together by their grandmother’s last wish. Faith (Ashley Williams, “The Jim Gaffigan Show”) and Kelly (Laci J Mailey, “Chesapeake Shores”) reunite in the frosty French Alps, sent there to recreate the trip of their grandmother’s life: her first vacation with the sisters’ grandfather.

Faith and Kelly repair their relationship while enjoying everything their alpine adventure has to offer. Helping the two experience their trip to the fullest is their handsome guide, Frederic (Julien Marlon Samani, “Tiny Beautiful Things”). Frederic and Kelly feel a spark on the mountain, making the voyage even more magical.

Next in the “Countdown to Christmas” lineup is a the first-ever holiday rom-com series from Hallmark, taking viewers across the pond. “Arrested Development” and “Parenthood” actress Mae Whitman stars as Kate in “Twelve Dates ‘Til Christmas.” Kate is successful in her career and surrounded by family and friends, living in the small town of Blexford, England.

Though Kate is busy with her Saville Row textile design business and caring for her father Mac (Nathaniel Parker, “The Vineyard”), who is on the mend from a motorbike accident, in her spare time, she feels like she is in a rut. This is where Kate’s best friend, Laura (Lucy Eaton, “Staged”), steps in.

Seeing that her friend could use something to shake up her life, Laura signs Kate up for a holiday-themed matchmaking program, The 12 Dates of Christmas. With the help of Laura and their longtime friend Callum (Julian Morris, “Little Women”), Kate sets out on dates full of yuletide cheer, only to meet a match — a dashing dater portrayed by Toby Sandeman (“The Game”).

Complicating this new development is a visit from Kate’s mother. Delilah (Mary McDonnell, “The Fall of the House of Usher”), who divorced Mac long ago in favor of a life spent globetrotting, pays a surprise holiday visit to her estranged family. Meanwhile, homebody Mac may have just met someone who gives him a reason to get out of the house in a local widow named Evelyn (Jane Seymour, “Harry Wild”).

New episodes of the six-part miniseries air two at a time on Fridays, with the finale of “Twelve Dates ‘Til Christmas” airing Friday, Dec. 19.

That’s not all that Hallmark has to offer this holiday season. Other festive series continue their runs with new weekly episodes through mid-December. The docuseries “Christmas at Sea” airs on Tuesdays and details the experience of Hallmark superfans as they set sail on a Christmas cruise to a tropical destination alongside Hallmark stars such as Jonathan Bennett (“Season’s Greetings From Cherry Lane,” 2024) and Sarah Drew (“Mistletoe Murders”).

Mondays are for the competitors on Hallmark. In the reality competition series “Finding Mr. Christmas,” Hallmark leading man hopefuls com-

pete for a chance to star in their own romance movie. Hosted by Bennett with lead judge Melissa Peterman (“Happy’s Place”), holiday hunks are put through their paces, testing their abilities to help load Santa’s sleigh or banter with their leading lady on horseback and whittling down the pool of dreamboats in weekly eliminations, all in the name of crowning a new TV movie love interest. Season 1 winner Ezra Moreland starred in the 2024 movie “Happy Howlidays.”

Following the star-making competition show is something a little sweeter. “Baked With Love: Holiday” sees 10 teams of two compete in a bake-off, putting their finest family recipes up on the judges table. Tamera Mowry-Housley (whose 2025 Hallmark holiday movie offering, “Tidings for the Season,” is available to stream on Hallmark+) hosts the series alongside the judges — chef Anna Haugh (“Anna Haugh’s Big Irish Food Tour”) and NYT Cooking producer Vaughn Vreeland, who’s done the morning show food segment rounds with appearances on “Good Morning America” and “Today” — who provide their expert tasting notes.

There is even more to stream, including a new installment of the beloved Hallmark film series “Three Wisest Men.” The third in the set after the 2022 film “Three Wise Men and a Baby” and last year’s “Three Wiser Men and a Boy,” the new film follows the three Brenner brothers — Luke (Andrew Walker, “Adventures in Love & Birding,” 2025), Taylor (Tyler Hynes, “Letterkenny”) and Stephan (Paul Campbell, “Turner & Hooch”) — on another holiday adventure. This time, they’re holding one last family Christmas in their childhood home before it goes up for sale.

Get into the holiday spirit with two Hallmark originals — “An Alpine Holiday,” airing Thursday, Dec. 4, and the “Twelve Dates ‘Til Christmas” series premiere, airing Friday, Dec. 5 — on Hallmark.

Reflections on stardom

Clooney, Sandler share screen time in Baumbach epic ‘Jay Kelly’

There is a saying in the film industry that “every movie is a miracle.” While most recently used as the title of a 2025 book coauthored by veteran Boston Herald journalist Nat Segaloff and film critic Leonard Maltin, the sentiment behind the phrase rings true for many involved in a film’s production. As such, it comes as no surprise that Hollywood loves films about films and filmmaking. And indeed, who doesn’t love to see themselves represented on screen?

In “Jay Kelly,” the newest film from four-time Oscar nominee Noah Baumbach (“Marriage Story,” 2019), esteemed actor and eternal heartthhrob George Clooney (“Michael Clayton,” 2007) gets a chance to relive some of his own finest moments while wearing the shoes of the titular leading man. With his manager, Ron, played by funnyman Adam Sandler (“Spanglish,” 2004), at his side, fictional Hollywood favorite Jay Kelly “embarks on a journey of self-discovery, confronting both his past and present” (per Netflix).

“Jay Kelly” is now playing in select theaters and begins streaming Friday, Dec. 5, on Netflix.

When it comes to visual storytelling, writer/director Baumbach — who has previously been lauded for his work penning “The Squid and the Whale” (2005) and “Barbie” (2023), among others — holds stock in the fact that actors serve as blank slates to reflect the viewers’ lives and dreams back at them in a meaningful way.

“Movie stars are our avatars,” Baumbach told Vanity Fair in an August interview. “They are people that we invest in and project onto and live through. ... That was in the DNA of what this thing should be: What if a movie star was essentially playing one, and reflecting back our own vulnerabilities and our own questions about life?”

Casting Clooney as the movie star in question is a key decision for the film, as several adults and children will have grown up with the A-lister releasing a plethora of films. From the “E.R.” in the 1990s to “O Brother, Where Art Thou” (2000) and the Ocean’s franchise at the turn of the millennium and, more recently, everything from “Wolfs” (2024) to Nespresso commercials, there is no denying that Clooney is one of the most recognizable Western actors working today.

Baumbach, alongside co-writer and actress Emily Mortimer (“Match Point,” 2005), uses Clooney’s fame to the film’s advantage by attempting to craft a piece that simultaneously reflects the nuance and cultish nature of a glorified Hollywood lifestyle while also revealing the humanity of the title actor himself, who is plagued by the same loneliness, uncertainty and eternal questioning that so many people face throughout their lives.

George Clooney and Adam Sandler in “Jay Kelly”

But despite Kelly’s on-screen struggle to parse his personal failures amid global career success, Clooney told CBS reporter Seth Doane that he does not personally relate to his character’s inability to move beyond his setbacks and disappointments.

“What I know in life is you can live with failure: ‘I tried this, it didn’t work out,’” Clooney shared during an interview with Doane in Venice, Italy, where the film premiered. “What you can’t live with is regret. Jay Kelly is filled with regret. I mean, if I get hit by a bus tomorrow, I have no regrets. I’ve certainly made mistakes. I’ve certainly done some dumb things. But I took a big bite at the apple, and I really took big swings.”

Thankfully, Kelly has his caring manager, Ron, at his side to hype him up and guide him through some of his darkest reflections and regrets, which begin to consume him shortly after his daughter (Grace Edwards, “Asteroid City,” 2023) leaves home for Paris. Played by Sandler in a manner both comedic and grounded, Ron is, in many ways, an extension of Kelly and the fame the two of them created over their years together in Tinsel Town. Likewise, Ron’s relative invisibility next to his star offers its own comment on the more vapid side of the industry, something Oscar winner Laura Dern’s (“Jurassic Park,” 1993) character, Liz, highlights in the film.

“It only goes one way,” says Liz, Kelly’s publicist and Ron’s one-time romantic interest, adding, “No one wants to say it, but it does. We aren’t to him what he is to us.”

“Jay Kelly” is a two-hour showbiz epic featuring a sweeping score by Nicholas Britell, who composed the scores for HBO’s “Succession” and the three-time Academy Award-winning film “Moonlight” (2016), with cinematography by Oscar winner Linus Sandgren (“La La Land,” 2016).

Patrick Wilson (“The Conjuring,” 2013), Isla Fisher (“Wedding Crashers,” 2005), Louis Partridge (“Disclaimer”), Jamie Demetriou (“Stath Lets Flats”), Billy Crudup (“The Good Shepherd,” 2006), Riley Keough (“It Comes at Night,” 2017), Eve Hewson (“Bad Sisters”), Greta Gerwig (“Frances Ha,” 2012), Patsy Ferran (“Mickey 17,” 2025) and Jim Broadbent (“Moulin Rouge!” 2001) round out the star-studded cast.

While we’re all counting down to Christmas, chef Gordon Ramsay (“Hell’s Kitchen”) has his latest competitors looking up. “Next Level Chef” gets a holiday makeover in the threeweek special event “Next Level Baker,” making its debut Thursday, Dec. 4, on Fox.

In this festive “Next Level” spinoff, Ramsay — who is joined by Food Network star Carla Hall (“Top Chef”) and Sprinkles Cupcakes founder Candace Nelson (“Cupcake Wars”) — welcomes bakers of all levels, from home bakers, to professionals, to social media stars, to explore the three-tier set built for “Next Level Chef,” all decked out for this new baking competition.

With a $25,000 prize on the line, the bakers in question will be “challenged to create eyepopping festive holiday delights,” says Fox. Split into three teams, the contestants will have Ramsay, Hall or Nelson as a coach, seeing the culinary superstars aiding their fledglings with the tasks at hand.

According to Yahoo, the “Next Level Chef” kitchen “has been transformed into a winter wonderland to capture the holiday spirit for the bakeoff, so there will be bakers in the basement level where the equipment leaves a lot to be desired; the middle level, which is an average kitchen; and then, the top level, which is state of the art.”

As the competition progresses, the teams will experience all three kitchens, utilizing different tools and pieces of equipment as they whip up Christmas-themed cookies, cakes and more. After the weekly challenges are announced, the bakers must grab ingredients from a moving platform, transforming their choices into a five-star culinary masterpiece that proves the team’s worthiness for the top-level kitchen.

Q: Why are some of the songs used on “Dancing With the Stars” performed live, while others are recordings by the original artist? It’s so inconsistent.

A: It depends who you ask, but the folks who make the show say it comes down to the specific needs of the performance.

According to “Dancing With the Stars” music director Ray Chew, it’s often about really specific nuances that the pros want to bring out in the choreography.

“They’re like, ‘Well, I need to do a little movement on that,’” he told Us Weekly last year. “There’s a lot of very, very specific things that they look for.”

His job, then, is to emphasize those little moments in his live band’s arrangement. And the pros are often providing “revisions and modifications” right up until showtime.

He’s also often required to reinterpret a popular song to suit a totally different type of dance — a new skill he’s had to develop for his “DWTS” role. “There was nothing previous to this show where I had to take the song ‘Get Down On It’ and make a rumba out of it.”

On the other hand, executive producer Conrad Green (“Crime Scene Kitchen”) said there are times when a live band simply can’t reproduce what the performers like about the original recording.

“It took hundreds of hours in a studio to get some of those sounds,” he told the Hollywood Reporter back in 2013. “So in some cases we’re thinking, let’s just use that song.

“What’s the point in forcing a band to try to do something that’s impossible to achieve?”

Q: What ever happened to Lorenzo Lamas? Is he still doing stuff?

A: “Doing stuff” is a great description of screen heartthrob Lorenzo Lamas’s (“Baby Rock,” 1984) late career. He has more credits on his resume for appearing as himself than he does for acting roles — so perhaps, when he finally retires, his greatest role will have been Lorenzo Lamas.

Fortunately, he’s not done yet.

He’s had three roles this year alone. He appeared in the Hallmark movie “Love in the Clouds” last May, and he did two action films, “Checkmate” and “President Down,” both of

which were released directly on the Tubi streaming platform.

He has a couple of other potential films on the go, though it’s not clear which will come first, if any (they’re all very much in the idea stage).

He first came to fame back in the ‘80s, for starring in the hit prime-time soap “Falcon Crest” and the schlocky-but-successful film series “Snake Eater,” the first of which was released in 1989.

By that point, he had built up a recognized brand as a handsome tough guy that he’s been trading on ever since.

That includes other films and shows, but also a lot of reality TV, such as the short-lived series

“Leave it to Lamas,” which aired in 2009 on the E! Entertainment channel, and the ABC competition series “Are You Hot? The Search for America’s Sexiest People.”

More recently, he appeared on a couple of episodes of “Blue Collar Auction” and the 2017 revival of the groundbreaking ABC celebrity reality series “Battle of the Network Stars” (having done quite a few episodes of the original back in the ‘80s).
