‘Ghosts’ returns for pre-season Halloween bash By Dana Simpson TV Media

here are certain cycles in modern life that allow us (or force us, depending on one’s outlook) to step away from the grind. School is, of course, one of the earliest such cycles in a person’s life — stopping each June for the summer break and resuming again around Labor Day each September — but sports, fashion and corporate financial cycles also follow a similar seasonal structure. Perhaps most recognizable, however, at least for readers of this article, is the typical television cycle, which typically begins in the spring or autumn and takes a midseason hiatus from mid-December to January or early February before resuming and wrapping up the season as summer begins. “Ghosts,” for example, has been following this trajectory until recently, when it announced Season 6 would release in spring 2027, approximately a full year since its Season 5 finale in May 2026. But much like its title implies, “Ghosts” makes sure its presence is felt — even between seasons. The “Ghosts” Halloween special premieres Thursday, Oct. 29, on CBS, and marks the first of two hour-long festive specials before the series’ Season 6 premiere. “Ghosts” is a 30-minute (with commercials) sitcom from “New Girl” and “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” creator/producers The Joes: Joe Port and Joe Wiseman. It stars Utkarsh Ambudkar (“Free Guy,” 2021) and Rose McIver (“iZombie”) as young married couple Jay and Sam, the latter of whom is contacted as the sole inheritor of a stately home in rural New York called Woodstone Manor, previously owned by her great-aunt Sophie (Tacey Adams, “NCIS”). After some discussion, Sam and Jay plan to renovate Woodstone and finally live their dream of running a quaint bed and breakfast, but shortly after getting the keys to the centuries-old property, Sam suffers a life-altering event that leaves her open to the spectral plane around her. In short, Sam sees ghosts now. Based on the BBC series of the same name starring Charlotte Ritchie (“Call the Midwife”) and Kiell Smith-Bynoe (“Stath Lets Flats”) as inheriting couple Alison and Mike, the CBS/Paramount+ series keeps nearly all details (except names) the same as its source. From the relationships, to broad events, to character backstories, much stays the same between series iterations. The American version of “Ghosts” has, however, eclipsed the original in one massive respect: number of episodes. BBC’s “Ghosts,” which ran from 2019 to 2023 and is available to watch on Paramount+, consists of 35 episodes over five seasons, while the CBS series already contains 94

Rose McIver and Utkarsh Ambudkar in “Ghosts” episodes in five years and ahead of its Season 6 premiere this spring. Although many of the show’s returning fans are disappointed to have to wait an extra few months for their beloved series, they can take comfort in knowing that Season 6 — when it comes — will be a full 22 episodes of spectral silliness. Additionally, “Ghosts” viewers get a little more bang for their idiomatic buck as the series is also releasing two holiday specials between seasons. As well as a coming one-hour Christmas special on Dec. 10, “Ghosts” airs a two-part, hourlong Halloween special in honor of the seasonal thinning of the veil. Premiering Thursday, Oct. 29, on CBS and streaming next-day on Paramount+, the two-parter is directed by “Brooklyn NineNine” editor and director Cortney Carrillo and is titled “The Mirror.” “A couple of months after Pete’s [Richie Moriarty, “Hamster & Gretel”] disappearance, while Sam is in Australia on the set of her new film, ‘Polar Opposites,’ Kyle [new series regular Ben Feldman, “Superstore”] steps up to help babysit the ghosts,” begins the Paramount Press description.

“Also, Hetty [Rebecca Wisocky, “Devious Maids”] is unexpectedly reunited with her estranged sister, Margaret [guest star Maria Thayer, “Those Who Can’t”], and Bela [Punam Patel, “Special”] throws an unconventional Halloween bash at Woodstone.” Addressing the Season 5 cliffhanger, Wiseman told TVInsider.com that fans “will not have to wait” to find out what happened to Pete. “I know it was couched as midseason, but with these specials that are going to be an hour long, we’re basically just premiering two weeks later than we normally would,” Wiseman shared, touting the praises of the hour-long special model to break up the hiatus. “We’re gonna pick up a couple of months after the finale took place,” added Port, “and we’re gonna go from there.” As for the Christmas episode to follow, Paramount+ writes that it’s “inspired by that oh-sotraditional Christmas classic (according to some) … ‘Die Hard’ (1988).” By the time Season 6 comes along in 2027, Pete may well be back home in Woodstone. Either way, ParamountPlus.com alludes to the

fact that Season 6 will largely focus on The Others, the mysterious group introduced in Season 5. “Ghosts” Season 6 sees the return of the living — Sam, Jay and Kyle (who can also see spirits) — and ghosts Hetty Woodstone (Wisocky), Capt. Isaac Higgintoot (Brandon Scott Jones, “The Other Two”), Alberta Haynes (Danielle Pinnock, “Solar”), Thorfinn (Devan Chandler Long, “Bosch”), Trevor Lefkowitz (Asher Grodman, “Bookie”), Flower (Sheila Carrasco, “Leo,” 2023) and Sasappis (Roman Zaragoza, “Spirit Rangers”). Don’t miss your chance to catch up with old friends when “Ghosts” launches its two-part Halloween special Thursday, Oct. 29, on CBS. Both episodes stream next-day on Paramount+.
