Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan may be relocating from New York to Boston, but he’s still “Blue.”
After a 14-season run on “Blue Bloods,” the actor moves his police detective character into the CBS and Paramount+ spinoff “Boston Blue,” premiering Friday, Oct. 17. Reagan is drawn to the Massachusetts capital (Wahlberg’s hometown) when the younger of his two sons, Sean — also a police officer, now played by Mika Amonsen (“The Republic of Sarah”) — is injured in a fire set to cover up a murder. The ever-headstrong Danny leaves New York and injects himself into the case, giving him a new partner in Det. Lena Silver (“Star Trek: Discovery” alum Sonequa Martin-Green), a member of a lawand-order family not unlike the Reagans.
Lena’s sister, Sarah (Maggie Lawson, “Psych”), is a Boston police superintendent, their brother, Jonah (Marcus Scribner, “Blackish”), is a rookie cop and their mother, Mae (Gloria Reuben, “ER”), is the city’s district attorney. Rev. Edwin Peters (Ernie Hudson, “Ghostbusters,” 1984) is the family patriarch, and a dinner scene in the first episode upholds a tradition associated with the Reagans. In fact, guest star Bridget Moynahan (“John Wick,” 2014) reprises her “Blue Bloods” role as Erin Reagan, with a literal seat at that table. She’ll also be a director on the new show.
“It is another show about a law-enforcement family,” the friendly Wahlberg acknowledges, “and I can tell you from 14 years on ‘Blue Bloods’ that I’ve met thousands of lawenforcement families, or people from law-enforcement families, who’ve said how much that show meant to them and how much it means to see families like theirs represented on TV. Having the chance to continue telling the story of a new law-enforcement family, it’s a tremendous honor, and hopefully it lands with all of those [actual] families the same way ‘Blue Bloods’ did.”
Wahlberg, quite literally, hits the ground running with “Boston Blue” in its opening moments. “I hurt my hamstring pretty good,” he allows, “but it’s important to capture and intrigue the audience right away, and also to remind them of the [‘Blue Bloods’] past. I’m doing as Danny what I’m doing as Donnie — learning about this new world and fitting into it, and picking my spots to say, ‘Hey, we might try this instead of that.’ Being open to that has been really fun, and it’s allowing Danny to grow as a character as Donnie grows as a person.”
Danny was so devoted to protecting New
York City that Wahlberg realized a big challenge facing the “Boston Blue” creative team was “how we could make it believable that Danny would go to Boston. The Reagan family always had each other’s back in New York, and there was always another Reagan there to have their six and to be there for them.
“While the Silver family has sort of embraced Sean as their own, I think when Danny goes there to see Sean, he realizes [he needs to stay],” Wahlberg adds. “It’s the father-andson bond, and Sean being able to look behind him and know that he has a Reagan there as well. And the Silver family actually helps bring that out. We discovered throughout the first three episodes that Sean’s discovering what it means to be a Reagan — finally joining law enforcement, finally putting service ahead of self, and doing these different things that the family does.”
While “Boston Blue” involves location filming in the title city, it is also utilizing Toronto, for economic reasons. An executive producer
of the show as well — along with others including veteran filmmaker Jerry Bruckheimer of 2022’s “Top Gun: Maverick” — Wahlberg says programming executives “were like, ‘There’s no show if it’s [filmed] in Boston. We can’t afford it.’ And I said, ‘Well, you have to do some things in Boston. You can’t fake Fenway Park or Boston Common.’ And they said, ‘You’re right. Let us work on this.’”
Thus, the plan is for several weeks of filming in Canada, then a week in Boston. “We actually got parts of four episodes in a week in Boston,” Wahlberg reports. “It was crazy and confusing, but we captured so much. We’ve really made the most of it, and I’m very grateful to the network for being so supportive of our going there. It’s not a small endeavor.”
The husband of actress-model Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg (“Scream 3,” 2000), Wahlberg insists his new commitment to “Boston Blue” doesn’t mean he’ll neglect his musical activity with New Kids on the Block, whose
Las Vegas residency is scheduled to resume Nov. 1.
“I can’t wait to go meet all those fans and hear their thoughts about the series,” he says, “and then get on stage and be a thousand miles away from Danny Reagan as I’m New Kid Donnie Wahlberg. That fuels my acting, and the acting fuels my passion for New Kids. Every time I need a little rest from one, the other one magically reappears with a tremendous opportunity. They feed each other.”
Get back in blue with the Reagans and the Silvers when the new series “Boston Blue” premieres on CBS and Paramount+ Friday, Oct. 17.

‘The Chair Company’ enters a mysterious world through office furniture
By Sarah Passingham TV Media
The monotony of a desk job can cause one’s mind to wander, connecting dots that someone with less free time may overlook.
In the new HBO comedy “The Chair Company,” premiering on the network and HBO Max Sunday, Oct. 12, a man is lured into a hidden conspiratorial network after a minor event at work. Tim Robinson (“Detroiters”) stars as William Ronald “Ron” Trosper, a father and husband with a respectable job who struggles to keep his life from spiraling out of control as he becomes obsessed with a chair company.
Per HBO, “after an embarrassing incident at work, a man finds himself investigating a farreaching conspiracy.” The tailspin begins in the official trailer when Ron makes a phone call to National Business Solutions, who credit themselves as the No. 1 destination for office furniture in their customer service line script. Ron calls after having witnessed a problem with their product, “a big problem,” he assures the representative.
Putting his problem with the chair company aside, Ron appears in the trailer to live a happy, normal life. His boss, Jeff Levjman (Lou Diamond Phillips, “Prodigal Son”), enthusiastically introduces him as a new project head at a work event for Fisher Robay. Ron’s wife, Barb (Lake Bell, “Bless This Mess”), toasts his accomplishments over a celebratory family dinner. His home life with his kids Natalie (Sophia Lillis, “Sharp Objects”) and Seth (Will Price, “Goosebumps”) seems pleasant. Overall, Ron is living an exceedingly fine existence — if a little grey.
However, an enticing pull to run down the rabbit hole of the chair company draws Ron away from reality. Something must be missing for Ron to drop off the deep end so quickly. “There is a massive problem that could cause mass casualties,” Ron insists in the trailer, as he probes what he believes is a vast criminal conspiracy operating under the guise of an office furniture supplier. Ron’s life unravels — he is chased down in the street, on a nature trail and through traffic, while those who have been supportive of him start voicing their concern for his well-being. “There’s a darkness to you, Ron,” a well-meaning coworker tells him, as another reminds him she vouched for him as project head. Barb questions the odd hours Ron keeps and whether he is hiding something from her. Ron is, of course, keeping a secret, but the truth is both stranger than she could ever imagine and too dangerous to involve her in.
His new investigative hobby is what sends Ron on late-night trespassing missions accompanied by fellow conspiracy theorist Mike Santini (Joseph Tudisco, “A Brooklyn Love Story,” 2024), distracting him from both his 9-5 and his family life.
If you are familiar with Robinson’s other credits, such as the Netflix sketch comedy series “I Think You Should Leave” and the 2024 black comedy “Friendship,” it is no surprise that “The Chair Company” exploits the isolation and loneliness of single-minded obsession for cringe comedy.
In notable “I Think You Should Leave” sketch scenarios, Robinson’s characters spin life’s mundanities into interactions that force viewers to beg him to please just stop through the screen. A haunted house tour guest abuses the guide’s lax language rules, a hidden camera prank show host talks himself to the brink of an existential crisis in head-to-toe prosthetics during filming at a shopping mall and a man reconsiders his past when a baby doesn’t like him, to name just a few of Robinson’s surprisingly empathetic, socially awkward sketch personas.
A common refrain among “Friendship” reviews was that it was like a feature length version of a sketch from Robinson’s Netflix show, where his character became completely consumed with healing a fledgling friendship between himself and Paul Rudd’s (“Only Murders in the Building”) character after a falling out. If you had a dime for every time one of Robinson’s characters didn’t know where the socially acceptable line was, you would be rich.
Even in “Detroiters,” the short-lived yet beloved Comedy Central sitcom, Robinson dealt in the comedy of obsession. He co-starred alongside Sam Richardson (“Veep”) as Tim and Sam, respectively, best friends and next-door neighbors who also worked together, running an ad agency in Detroit. Tim and Sam had a codependent friendship that often made them antisocial towards anyone outside their two-person bubble.
“The Chair Company” is executive produced by Robinson and his frequent collaborator, former “Saturday Night Live” writer Zach Kanin, Adam McKay (“Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty”) and Todd Schulman (“Jury Duty”) for Hyperobject Industries, as well as Andrew DeYoung (“The Decameron”) and Igor Srubshchik (“Betty”). DeYoung and Aaron Schimberg (“A Different Man,” 2024) are episode directors.
Don’t miss the premiere of “The Chair Company” Sunday, Oct. 12, on HBO and HBO Max.

Is it a skeleton? Is it a zombie? Or ... is it cake? Yes, that’s right. The popular, realistic cakemaking competition is back, and this time it’s serving up a side of sinister. “Is It Cake? Halloween” is now available to stream on Netflix, leaving its viewers to ask the ultimate question: can we have our spooks and eat them, too?
Having first debuted in March 2022 and offering an impressive three-season run (so far), this competition mixes baking prowess with optical illusions, seeing its contestants baking cakes indistinguishable from real, everyday objects — or, in this case, Halloween-centric icons such as skeletons, black cats, jack-o’-lanterns, headstones and haunted dolls.
Hosted by “Saturday Night Live’s” Mikey Day, this four-episode holiday spectacular will see the arrival of nine hyperrealistic cake artists who must complete a gauntlet of baking challenges prepared in a kitchen that just might be haunted itself. Through each and every task, the bakers face heartpounding Halloween twists, creating their masterpieces as they maneuver hedge mazes, dive headfirst into oozing cauldrons and navigate countless costumed guests — such as Chelsea Peretti (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”), Gillian Jacobs (“Community”), Harvey Guillen (“What We Do in the Shadows”), Jack McBrayer (“30 Rock”), Kevin Nealon (“Happy Gilmore,” 1996), Melissa Joan Hart (“Sabrina the Teenage Witch”), Pete Holmes (“Crashing”), Rachel Feinstein (“Trainwreck,” 2015), Ravi V. Patel
Mikey Day hosts “Is It Cake? Halloween”
(“Meet the Patels,” 2014), Ron Funches (“6 Underground,” 2019), Whitney Cummings (“Whitney”) and Yvonne Orji (“Velma”), to name a few.
This holiday special sees bakers Andrea Ortiz Fuentes, Annabel De Vetten, Brad Lamb, Breon Roundtree, Paul Bosley, Ronique Briggs, Regina Walker, Sonny Robinson and Vanessa Barcelo taking on the challenge at hand, each bringing their own spooktacular specialties to the game.

Q: Are they ever going to reboot “Willow”? And would Warwick Davis be in it?
A: They already have, and yes he was. But there’s no way you could have known that.
A new “Willow” series — actually a sequel rather than a reboot — was produced for the Disney+ streaming service back in 2022. But it was promptly cancelled after just one eight-episode season, and shortly afterward, Disney took the surprising step of removing it entirely from Disney+.
So we know it happened, but fans like yourself can’t currently watch it.
I say “currently” because Disney has a long, pre-internet history of taking even its most beloved properties out of circulation for a while — putting them in what became known as the “Disney vault.” The intention was to make a splash with a video re-release once some time had passed.
That might not be the plan here — it’s quite possible that Disney just decided the show wasn’t very good and would rather people forgot about it.
However, critics and audiences both seemed to like it, so hopefully we haven’t seen the last of “Willow.”
It would be a shame if we did, because the original “Willow” film, released in 1988, is a beloved adventure story, and judging by the reviews, the sequel series did it justice in terms of its tone and story.
Warwick Davis (“Life’s Too Short”) reprised his
role as Willow Ufgood, a farmer and aspiring magician in the original film, who has grown into a full-fledged sorcerer and now leads a new band of misfits on a dangerous adventure.
Q: Is J.J. Abrams going to do any more “Cloverfield” movies? What’s stopping him?
A: It’s certainly been a while since 2018’s “The Cloverfield Paradox,” the third film in the “Cloverfield” universe, but Hollywood superproducer J.J. Abrams (“Star Trek,” 2009) is indeed working on a new one.
But he’s been saying that for a while now — basically since 2018. As for what’s been stopping him, it seems like a lot of things.
It was announced in 2022 that filming was about to get underway, with Babak Anvari (“Monsterland”) directing. Of course, 2022 was a tough year for filming, with the Hollywood strikes and ongoing pandemic restrictions, and it seems no filming actually got done. But it
looks like that was just a delay — Anvari said in March of this year that he’s still working on it.
Beyond these impediments, there’s also the challenge of Abrams’ schedule. He’s a famously hands-on producer, and that’s particularly true of the “Cloverfield” films, so he would need to have time to devote to it. Considering he’s one of the most in-demand producers in the business, his time is a scarce resource.
Abrams has one movie filming now — a drama called “Ghostwriter” that he’s also directing and writing — and he’s producing another film, the horror “Flowervale Street,” which is currently in post-production with an eye on an August 2026 release.
He has a number of TV shows on the go as well, including the legal drama “Presumed Innocent” on Apple TV+ and the HBO Max crime drama “Duster.”
The new “Cloverfield” movie, when it happens, is rumored to be a direct sequel to the first film, “Cloverfield” (2008), an aliens-attack horror film told in found-footage style. The other two films in the franchise, “10 Cloverfield Lane” (2016) and “The Cloverfield Paradox” (2018) are looser follow-ups that exist in the same universe without necessarily telling the same story (saying any more than that would be spoiling the plots).
When promoting the first film back in 2008, Abrams said he came up with the idea as an attempt to create a great new monster-movie franchise to rival Godzilla.
Q: I was just watching “Den of Thieves” again and I think I saw Eric Braeden from “The Young and the Restless” in it! Was that him? Is he still acting?
A: Yes, that was Eric Braeden (“Escape from the Planet of the Apes,” 1971), and not only is he still acting, he’s still acting on “The Young and the Restless.”
Braeden is best known, by far, as Victor Newman on the long-running soap. He’s still doing the role, as he has been since 1980, and it’s made him an icon of daytime TV.
Despite the incredibly demanding nature of soap stardom (shows typically shoot upwards of 200 episodes per year), Braeden continues to pop up now and then in films and other TV shows.
His most recent bit of moonlighting was, indeed, a smallish supporting role in the 2018 action hit “Den of Thieves.”
Prior to that, his last non-“Y&R” role was a Season 4 episode of “How I Met Your Mother” in 2008. Earlier that year, he also appeared in an independently produced Western drama called “The Man Who Came Back.”
His biggest soap-free role came back in 1997, when he played real-life millionaire John Jacob Astor in “Titanic,” one of the biggest movies of all time.
