Tragedy strikes at ‘Crystal Lake’ in horror prequel series By Dana Simpson TV Media
I
n 1996, Drew Barrymore (“Charlie’s Angels,” 2000) starred in Wes Craven’s “Scream.” Featured prominently on the movie poster and repeatedly named in the film’s promotional marketing, no one expected Barrymore’s character, 17-year-old Casey Becker, to be lured into an over-the-phone horror movie pop quiz and get killed off within the first 15 minutes of the slasher. In doing so, however, Craven and “Scream” writer Kevin Williamson (“Dawson’s Creek”) forever changed the landscape of horror cinema. They — and Barrymore’s Casey — also gave horror fans one vital piece of trivia they won’t soon forget: the killer in the 1980 horror classic “Friday the 13th” was Pamela Voorhees (Betsy Palmer, “Knots Landing”), not her later infamous maskand-plaid-clad son, Jason (Ari Lehman, “Manny’s Orphans,” 1978). This year, some 46 years after Mama Voorhees wrought revenge upon the camp counselors of Crystal Lake for letting her 11-year-old son drown (and 30 years after the death of Casey Becker), production company A24 brings horror fans the story behind the massacre. “Crystal Lake,” an eight-episode prequel series to “Friday the 13th,” premieres Thursday, Oct. 15, on Peacock. First discussed in 2003 and eventually announced on Halloween of 2022 when NBC’s streaming platform Peacock gave A24 and original series creator Bryan Fuller (“Hannibal”) the green light and a straight-to-series order, “Crystal Lake” follows the emotional upheaval of Pamela “Pam” Voorhees, as played by “Dead to Me” and “ER” actress Linda Cardellini, immediately following the tragic death of her disabled son, Jason, at Camp Crystal Lake. With the series set nearly a decade before the vengeful events of the 1980 film, Polygon.com writes that “there’s more to Pam’s present — and past — than any fan of the series might guess. [Showrunner Brad] Kane’s [”IT: Welcome to Derry”] version of Crystal Lake is a little corner of America sinking into a paranoid, deeply unsettled era where every twist is compounded by Pam’s grief over Jason.” “While coming to terms with an unimaginable loss,” adds a separate description from TheHoloFiles.com, “Pamela’s life is further uprooted upon the arrival of two men with connections to her mysterious past.” Kane took the series’ reins after nearly two years of development with Fuller, who had planned a winter-set pilot that included an “hourlong chase” on “a frozen Crystal Lake.” According to Fuller at the time of his departure from the series, and as reported by Deadline in September 2024, “for reasons beyond our control, A24 has

We hope the final product will be something ‘Friday the 13th’ fans all over the world will enjoy.” As it turns out, that “different way” led to Kane, whose Jason-led journey began with “Friday the 13th: Part III” in 1982. “From the moment I watched Jason Voorhees [Richard Brooker, “Deathstalker,” 1983] squeeze a guy’s eyeball out of its socket [in glorious 3D!] at the tender age of eight years old, I knew my creative path was someday destined to converge with ‘The Man Behind The Mask,’” Kane shared in a statement in 2024. “Nothing defined my childhood more than growing up in the golden age of the slasher flick, and nothing’s defined the genre more than ‘Friday The 13th.’ I couldn’t be more excited for the opportunity to contribute a chapter to this iconic franchise, particularly with such fearless partners as Peacock and A24.” The road to completing “Crystal Lake” has been a long one, but horror fans the world over could not be more excited to take a peek behind the curtain at the Voorhees family. (“No Rest for the Wicked”) as adult Jason, while other main characters include Levon and Briana Brooks, as played by William Catlett (“Constellation”) and Devin Kessler (“Godfather of Harlem”); Dorf, played by Cameron Scoggins (“Nashville”); and Grace Snell, played by Gwendolyn Sundstrom (“I’m Beginning to See the Light,” 2025). Additional roles are portrayed by Joy Suprano (“Hightown”), Bernadette Quigley (“The First Lady”), Nick Cordileone (“Warrior”), Daniel Stewart Sherman (“Lodge 49”), Danielle Kotch (“Sinister,” 2012) and Phoenix Parnevik (“Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead,” 2024), among others. “Crystal Lake” made its world premiere Wednesday, Sept. 16, at the Toronto International Film Festival, showing its first two episodes, titled “The Great Pretender” and “Are You Experienced?,” before an audience of approximately 300 people at a Lightbox screening room. Reaction articles that followed, such as George Bate’s on ScreenRant.com, praise Cardellini’s performance as Jason’s grief-stricken mother. “’Crystal Lake’ strikes an emotional chord that
none of the prior Friday the 13th movies come close to hitting,” writes Bate in his piece published the evening of the premiere. “Cardellini plays the role of a grieving mother with profound emotion, making the audience live, breathe and feel the anguish dominating her every second of every day.” For her part, Cardellini credits her performance to Palmer’s roots as Pam. “[Y]ou can’t do what Betsy [Palmer] did,” Cardellini shared in an interview with Bate and his brother, Josh, on TheHoloFiles.com. “I would never try to mimic her, but there are echoes of her performance and there were lines that Brad [Kane] and I were sure to keep.” Don’t miss your invitation to “Crystal Lake.” Camp begins Thursday, Oct. 15, on Peacock.

Unlikely crime consultant is back in a new season of ‘Ludwig’ By Sarah Passingham TV Media
A
n unsolved crime presents itself in many ways. It can be a mystery, a conundrum or an enigma. Most of all, it is a puzzle to be solved, with evidence, witness testimonies, likely suspects and red herrings to fish out of the investigation. Through the eyes of a good detective with a sharp mind and depth of knowledge, the clues are always hiding in plain sight. In some ways, the skill set of an investigator isn’t all that different from what makes a legendary puzzle setter. That idea is what pulled the reclusive, brilliant puzzle maker out of his cocoon and far beyond his comfort zone in the first season of “Ludwig.” The detective dramedy returns with its second season Tuesday, Oct. 13, on BritBox, with new episodes dropping weekly on the streamer. Starring David Mitchell (“Peep Show”) as the puzzle setter known only as Ludwig to his loyal crossword solvers and John Taylor to his family, the series gave John another new secret identity. An unexpected call from his sister-inlaw Lucy Betts-Taylor (Anna Maxwell Martin, “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder”) forced John out of his house and into a covert operation that only he could perform: pose as his missing detective brother. It is a tall order for John, who is effectively a shut-in, stuck in the past (his cell phone the same one Lucy gifted him 20 years ago) and intentionally undersocialized. Joining the cast as season regulars are Mark Bonnar (“Catastrophe”) as newspaper editor Gareth Fisher; Sian Clifford (“The Ballad of Wallis Island,” 2025) as local MP Joanne Kemper; Ben Ashenden (“Bait”) as DC Ethan Cole; and Rumi Sutton (“After the Flood”) as DC Caitlin Sullivan. Dylan Hughes (“Death by Lightning”), Dipo Ola (“We Hunt Together”), Dorothy Atkinson (“Pennyworth”), Ralph Ineson (“Frankenstein,” 2025) and Karl Pilkington (“Rain Dogs”) all return this season. In the first season, John’s identical brother, DCI James Taylor, was missing under suspicious circumstances involving Chief Constable Ronan Ziegler (Ineson), and while knowledge of his disappearance was limited to just herself, her son Henry (Hughes) and John, Lucy urged him to impersonate his brother at work in order to collect intel that could help lead them to James’ whereabouts. John very reluctantly stepped into the Cambridge Police Authority, where he had to immediately adopt his more outgoing brother’s mannerisms, smoothly answer to “gov” and simplest of all, solve murders alongside his brother’s partner, DCI Russell Carter (Ola). Armed with a cypher-filled notebook of James’, John gathered all of the clues that he could from James’ workplace, raising surpris-
David Mitchell in “Ludwig” ingly little suspicion along the way, while Lucy and Henry worked every angle they could from the outside. After solving several murders as James, circumstances surrounding the death of a member of the police’s staff forced his hand, making John reveal his true identity. John’s benevolent infiltration of the police department was quietly handled internally by DCS Carol Shaw (Atkinson) and John was happy to put the whole ordeal behind him until Russell extended a contract for him to join them in a more official capacity as a crime scene consultant. The new six-episode season picks up where the last one finished, and though John is no longer living a lie amongst detectives, the big mystery of his brother’s disappearance is still unsolved. From BritBox: “A puzzle needs solving and a husband and father needs bringing home. One masquerade may have ended, but a new one has just begun.” “Ludwig” was created and written by Mark Brotherhood (“Mount Pleasant”) and is a coproduction with BritBox and the BBC. The directors this season are George Kane (“How to Get to Heaven From Belfast”) and Stella Corradi (“Killing Eve”). Executive producers are Brotherhood, Mitchell, Kenton Allen (“Can You Keep a Secret?” 2019), Toby Welch (“Breeders”), Kathryn O’Connor (“Cold Feet”), Chris Sussman (“Trying”), Robert Schildhouse (“Riot Women”) and Stephen Nye (“Beyond Paradise”). Georgie Fallon (“Dalgliesh”) is the producer of “Ludwig,” with Anya Wilson serving as co-producer. To say that “Ludwig” is a show for puzzle people would almost be an understatement. The series’ lead character is a puzzle setter by trade whose skills make him a standout detective, but the puzzles don’t end there. The show is literally made of puzzles. Fallon spoke with Radio Times back in October 2024 at the time of the release of the first season of “Ludwig” to reveal some of the Easter eggs that were part of the show for puzzle enthusiasts.

n his 1957 novel “On the Road,” famed beatnik Jack Kerouac asked, “What is that feeling when you’re driving away from people and they recede on the plain till you see their specks dispersing?” Kerouac posited that “[i]t’s the toohuge world vaulting us, and it’s goodbye.” For chef David Chang (“The Mind of a Chef”), it’s just the next step in a cross-country food tour. “The Detour with David Chang,” a new six-episode culinary road-trip series which concluded Sunday, Oct. 4, is available to stream now at CNN.com and on the CNN app. The series follows the celebrity chef and Momofuku founder as he “cuts through
the noise on a classic American road trip following local leads and friends’ recommendations to his next meal,” the CNN press description reads. “Each episode represents a different leg of Chang’s journey, pairing him with a new travel companion and a new culinary adventure.” In the Sept. 20 premiere, Chang met with Milk Bar founder Christina Tosi (“MasterChef: USA”) and drove from Nashville, Tennessee, to Madisonville, Tennessee, for some delicious barbecue at Benton’s Smoky Mountain Country Hams, a 79-year-old local eatery which played a part in both Chang and Tosi’s early days in the industry. As the pair share stories in the car, neither hesitates to stop for another bite to eat.

By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: I enjoy watching “The Repair Shop.” I’m amazed by the craftsmanship of the people on there. How do they get the material for the 100-year-old items? And do the customers pay for the result when it’s finished? A: The delightfully cozy British series “The Repair Shop” is like a cross between “Antiques Roadshow” and “This Old House.” Experts from across England come together in the show’s improvised workshop to restore beloved antiques brought in by regular people. Of course, “regular” is relative here. These are people who, as you say, occasionally have access to century- or centuries-old keepsakes and are willing to hand them over to strangers wielding hand tools. But the strangers also happen to be the foremost experts in their very particular fields. For example, a Season 2 episode featured horologist (that is, clock guy) Steve Fletcher and furniture restorer Will Kirk teaming up to restore a broken wooden barometer clock. To answer your materials question, this is what these people do for a living, so they make it their business to have access to the materials required. And in a country that’s so teeming with antiques that it can support a show like this for nearly a decade at this point, there’s enough old wood and antique spare parts to draw from. As for the question about payment, that’s less businesslike. “We don’t charge for repairs,” series producer Rob Butterfield said to British entertain-
On the upside, Holland is just trading her oldtimey costumes for a different kind as she’s signed on for a role in the upcoming superherothemed mockumentary series “The People v. Gorilla Grodd.” It’s described as an action-comedy, wherein long-running comic book B-character Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo, “Booksmart,” 2019) investigates various DC Comics villains, with each season devoted to a different bad guy. In case you didn’t guess, Season 1 is about Gorilla Grodd (Jimmy Tatro, “Home Economics”), a super-intelligent, telepathic gorilla who mostly appeared in “The Flash” comics. As is usual for Holland (and hard-working comics like her), she’s never just working on one thing. She also already shot an appearance for the web series “The Earliest Show,” starring her longtime comedy partner Lauren Lapkus (“Stuart Fails to Save the Universe”). In the meantime, she and Lapkus are currently on tour together with their cleverly named improv show “The Lauren & Mary Show.”
Q: What else is the actress who plays Jemma in “Little House on the Prairie” doing? Will she be back for a second season (assuming there is one)? A: Mary Holland (“Happiest Season,” 2020), better known for her comedy chops than her dramatic work, seemed genuinely delighted to be in the cast of Netflix’s reboot of “Little House on the Prairie.” She shared multiple set photos on social media, saying she was “in heaven” dressing up in “these corsets and petticoats and bonnets,” adding she had the “time of my life romping through the tall grass with these terrific goofs.” Unfortunately that time seems to be at an end. He’s worked steadily since then but never quite reached the same level of exposure. However, “steadily” seems to suit him fine because he really just needs to supplement his “Robot Chicken” work. “Robot Chicken” is a bizarre stop-motion animated comedy that ran for 17 years on the Cartoon Network from 2005 to 2022. It produced more than 200 episodes, and Meyer pitched in as either a voice actor or writer on more than half of those. It has now ceased full-time production, transitioning instead to regular specials. Meyer has been involved in both of the ones produced so far — one in 2025 and another earlier this year — and more are already planned. But in front of the camera, he also recently appeared in the 2026 indie comedy “Busboys” and an episode of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” also earlier this year. More excitingly for ‘90s fans, he’s currently shooting a role in the upcoming third (currently untitled) movie in the Romy and Michele series, following on the original 1997 hit “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion” starring Mira Sorvino (“Mighty Aphrodite,” 1995) and Lisa Kudrow (“Friends”).
