Hometown hero
LL Cool J in “NCIS: New York”
A new addition to the NCIS franchise sends one special agent home again. Sam Hanna (LL Cool J, “Lip Sync Battle”) is back on home turf in the series premiere of “NCIS: New York,” airing Tuesday, Oct. 6, on CBS. When a friend is found dead, Sam comes in from the wild and joins the New York field office in its investigation of the case. Scott Caan (“Hawaii Five-O”) and Jennifer Beals (“The L Word: Generation Q”) also star.

ontrary to popular belief, you can go home again. After 14 seasons of successful undercover missions taking down threats to America’s naval assets in “NCIS: Los Angeles,” one special agent is about to trade the City of Angels for his own home base. Sam Hanna (LL Cool J, “Lip Sync Battle”) leads the brand-new spinoff series “NCIS: New York,” premiering Tuesday, Oct. 6, on CBS. Since the CBS staple military police procedural “NCIS: Los Angeles” wrapped up in 2023, Sam has been traveling the world, working solo missions. After so much time away, one call brings him home where we find him in the series premiere of “NCIS: New York.” When Sam hears the news that his friend Jack Halloway, a Navy reservist, was found dead, he reaches out to Robyn Wells (Jennifer Beals, “The L Word: Generation Q”), director of the NCIS New York field office, to help with the investigation. Settling in with the New York team, Sam is paired with Agent Nick Schaeffer (Scott Caan, “Hawaii Five-O”). Sam has come in from the wild only to be partnered up with another agent whose roguish tendencies measure up to his own. Two top agents making big swings on a case that hits close to home could lead to trouble, but luckily the rest of the team helps balance them out. Working with Sam and Nick to investigate Jack’s death are Special Agents Wyatt Sellers (Shane Harper, “Power Book IV: Force”) and Addison “Addy” Ross (Jacqueline Byers, “Dark Winds”) and technical operator Sean Sullivan (Devin Druid, “13 Reasons Why”). Character breakdowns provided by CBS offer a deeper look into the members of the New York field office. Robyn leads with her intuition and is widely respected by her team; Addy is a resourceful agent with something to prove; Wyatt is fearless, sharp, highly skilled and a hopeless romantic; and Sean is witty, brilliant and resistant to authority. “NCIS: New York” was created by R. Scott Gemmill (“The Pitt”), who executive produces the series alongside Byron Balasco (“Kingdom”), Adam Davidson (“La Brea”), Kyle Harimoto (“Hawaii Five-0”), LL Cool J and Jason Barrett (“Down to Earth With Zac Efron”). A spinoff of a spinoff, “NCIS: New York” is the latest of seven total offshoots of the original series, “NCIS.” Still going strong with its 24th season premiering this fall, “NCIS” was crowned as the longest-running scripted prime-time series in CBS history, surpassing “Gunsmoke,” which wrapped up after 20 seasons in 1975.
Scott Caan and LL Cool J in “NCIS: New York” Balasco, who also serves as showrunner for the procedural, joined lead actor LL Cool J to speak to Deadline in September ahead of the show’s premiere. Balasco praised the chemistry and magnetism of the show’s lead partners before saying, “they’re really specifically great for New York because they both have a very complicated, emotional and loving relationship with the place that raised them. Having them both in New York together, dealing with the past, the present and the future together in different ways makes a very compelling watch.” About Sam’s move from one coast to the other for the new spinoff, LL Cool J said, “New York is totally different; it’s a lot grittier, it’s more character-driven. New York is the main character and the star. Sam hasn’t been in New York in many, many years. So he has to get reacclimated to that.”

Filmed on location in New York, “NCIS: New York” joins a growing number of CBS procedurals set in the Big Apple. While the most top-of-mind NYC-set procedural, “Law & Order,” belongs to NBC, CBS has been steadily filling out its own roster of series and spinoffs in the city that never sleeps. The long-running originating series “FBI” and its latest spinoff, “CIA,” are both set in New York field offices, with “CIA” returning for its sophomore season this month. On the comedy side of CBS’s crime procedurals are “Elsbeth” and the rebooted “Matlock,” which both take a lighter look at crime in the city from a lawyer’s perspective. A teaser trailer for the upcoming series reveals a bit more about the dynamics between Sam and the rest of the team. He and Nick quickly bond over their shared love language,
trading barbs about each other’s size. They have to fast-track trust because a moment later, they’re busting down doors together, guns raised and ready for action. “I want to work with the best. If not, why do the job?” Nick poses to Sam in the trailer, seemingly trying to butter up his new partner in an effort to entice the lone wolf to stay in New York. Catch the latest hit in the NCIS franchise with the series premiere of “NCIS: New York,” Tuesday, Oct. 6, on CBS.

Screen Scramble
‘Matchbox’ moves from the toy box to the small screen By Andrew Silver TV Media
A
fter the global success of 2023’s “Barbie” — the highest-grossing movie of 2023 with $1.447 billion (per Box Office Mojo) — Mattel has been scrounging through its toy box for other brands to adapt into film. However, things haven’t been smooth sailing for the toymaker as of late. “Masters of the Universe,” which debuted in theaters this past June before moving to Prime Video in July, failed to generate enough buzz to earn back its reported $170 million budget (per Variety), although, according to The Hollywood Reporter, it did top the charts for most minutes streamed during its first week on the streamer. With a big reveal at San Diego Comic-Con’s famed Hall H, Mattel has high hopes for its latest foray into film — “Matchbox: The Movie.” Debuting Friday, Oct. 9, on Apple TV, “Matchbox: The Movie” stars former WWE megastar and current Hollywood icon John Cena (“Peacemaker”) as Sean Walker, an undercover CIA agent who ends up mistakenly being hunted by the organization after a nuclear warhead goes missing. While on the run, Sean makes a stop in his hometown to reconnect with the childhood friends he used to play Matchbox cars with. Unfortunately, Sean’s actions drag said friends into his current situation, and the only way for them to clear their names is to find that missing warhead. Much like “Barbie” and “Masters of the Universe” before it, “Matchbox: The Movie” looks to adapt one of Mattel’s long-lasting brands to the screen. This time, it’s the iconic Matchbox car. Created in the 1950s by Jack Odell and his partners at Lesney Products, these die-cast cars captured the hearts of generations of children due to their “high quality, impressive detail and affordable prices” (per The Strong). Despite some stiff competition from Hot Wheels — another Mattel brand — and the eventual bankruptcy of Lesney then its purchase by Mattel, the Matchbox car has endured in popularity. To the point that, according to Mattel, “two Matchbox cars are sold every second somewhere around the world.” With a brand pulling in those numbers, it’s no wonder that Mattel is willing to sink large amounts of money into making “Matchbox: The Movie” a success. In addition to Cena, the movie also stars Jessica Biel (“The Illusionist,” 2006), Sam Richardson (“Veep”), Teyonah Parris (“The Marvels,” 2023) and Arturo Castro (“Broad City”) as the other members of Sean’s “Matchbox Gang.” The additional cast includes Danai Gurira (“Black Panther,” 2018), Corey Stoll (“Midnight in Paris,” 2011), Bill Camp (“12 Years a Slave,” 2013), Tornike Gogrichiani (“Drops of God”), Jack Alldridge (“Death by Lightning”),
John Cena in “Matchbox: The Movie” Golshifteh Farahani (“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” 2017), Daniel Bernhardt (“John Wick,” 2014), Randeep Hooda (“Monsoon Wedding,” 2001), Graham Harvey (“Stranger Things”), James Devoti (“American Soul”), Aiden Stoxx (“Yellowjackets”), Reagan Marum (“Bel-Air”), Max Fox (“Spider-Man: Lotus”) and Braxton Paul (“Crutch”). From director Sam Hargrave (“Extraction,” 2020) and based on a screenplay by David Coggeshall (“The Family Plan,” 2023), “Matchbox: The Movie” is produced by Jules Daly (“The Grey,” 2011); Ynon Kreiz (“Barbie,” 2023) and Robbie Brenner (“Dallas Buyers Club,” 2013) for Mattel Studios; and David Ellison (“Top Gun: Maverick,” 2022), Dana Goldberg (“Star Trek Beyond,” 2016) and Don Granger (“The Tomorrow War,” 2021) for Skydance Media. “Matchbox” is the latest Apple Original film produced in conjunction with Skydance Media. Skydance has worked with Apple on the Emmynominated sci-fi action film “The Gorge” (2025), which starred Miles Teller (“Whiplash,” 2014) and Anya Taylor-Joy (“The Queen’s Gambit”); the star-studded “Fountain of Youth” (2025) from director Guy Ritchie (“Sherlock Holmes,” 2009); the recently released “Mayday,” starring Ryan Reynolds (“Deadpool & Wolverine,” 2024) and Kenneth Branagh (“Murder on the Orient Express,” 2017); and the upcoming “Way of the Warrior Kid” from director McG (“Terminator Salvation,” 2009) and producer Chris Pratt (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” 2014). As a car lover, playing the lead role of “Matchbox” is a match made in heaven for Cena. At San Diego Comic-Con, he told Deadline: “I got to drive a VW bus, in which I was able to wheelie. … Wheelie-ing a [bus] was pretty fun. And I got to drive a 6x6 Land Rover in the Sahara Desert. … It came at a time in the movie where I really needed to get some stress off, so I was like, ‘I love going to work every day.’ Driving that Land Rover was pretty special.” So buckle up your seatbelts and sit back as “Matchbox: The Movie” speeds onto Apple TV Friday, Oct. 9.

touch of alchemy, the recipe could give Michael the answers he’s been searching for, so despite his doubts, he gives it a try. His co-worker Kacey (Lauren Patel, “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie,” 2021) joins him, and their experiment soon catches the attention of neighbors Bev (Sophie Willan, “Alma’s Not Normal”) and Clive (Jon Pointing, “Big Boys”), who are determined to figure out what mischief Michael is up to in his garden shed. The series is created, written and directed by Mackenzie Crook (“The Office”).
WHAT’S NEW ON NETFLIX “Blue Box” – Season 2
Step back onto the court for Season 2 of “Blue Box,” streaming weekly episodes on Netflix starting Sunday, Oct. 4. At Eimei High, sports are a way of life, and Taiki Inomata (Shoya Chiba, “Classroom of the Elite”) has always known where he stands. A badminton player on the boys team, he spends his mornings in the gym alongside Chinatsu Kano (Reina Ueda, “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba”), an older student he has quietly fallen for. What starts as a first crush takes a surprising turn when Chinatsu’s parents move overseas and she moves in with Taiki’s family. But having Chinatsu so close does not make his feelings any easier to handle. As Taiki works to improve on the court, Chinatsu fights for a spot on the basketball team, alongside classmates Hina Chono (Akari Kito, “My Dress-Up Darling”) and Kengo Haryu (Yuma Uchida, “Fruits Basket”), while new arrival Yumeka Kido (Yoshino Aoyama, “Bocchi the Rock!”) stirs up trouble for Chinatsu. Season 2 is directed by Daisuke Sako (“Lupin Zero”), with the series based on Koji Miura’s Weekly Shonen Jump manga.

Her unexpected helper is her estranged brother Nathan (voiced by Emmynominated actor Will Forte, “The Last Man on Earth”), who is now one of the ghosts and believes he and his fellow phantoms have some pretty good ideas on running the place. The voice cast includes Skyler Gisondo (“The Righteous Gemstones”) as

Alongside the “relentless pressure and casual cruelty of the social media age,” Carrie must also contend with the awakening of mysterious “telekinetic powers that rise alongside her adolescence,” powers she can neither explain nor contain as they build toward a single, shattering night. Michael Sleep’s (Pearce Quigley, “Detectorists”) life takes a very strange turn when an old family recipe leads him to something magical in Season 1 of “Small Prophets,” premiering Wednesday, Oct. 7, on Apple TV. There is no case too complicated for Jacqueline “Jax” Stewart (Emayatzy Corinealdi, “Middle of Nowhere,” 2012). But Season 4 of Hulu’s legal drama puts the brilliant defense attorney to the test when “Reasonable Doubt” returns Tuesday, Oct. 6, with three new episodes, followed by weekly episodes. Jax, a brilliant and fearless defense attorney in Los Angeles, plays by her own set of rules, bucking the justice system whenever she can if it means getting results. While those around her may judge her for her wild interpretation of the law and questionable ethics, Jax often finds them changing their tune as soon as her unique skills are needed. This season, Jax finds herself facing another crisis when Eric Cropper (Durrell “Tank” Babbs, “Preacher’s Kid,” 2010), her wealthy and calculating R&B star client, becomes the focus of a massive media storm. As the pressure builds around one of her most loyal clients, Jax must fight to protect Eric while keeping her firm and personal life intact. Just when she has enough on her plate, a new district attorney, Regina Harris (Meagan Good, “Think Like a Man,” 2012), arrives in Los Angeles and challenges her in ways she never saw coming. Created by writer Raamla Mohamed (“Scandal”), the series’ cast is rounded out by McKinley Freeman (“End of Watch,” 2012), Tim Jo (“The Neighbors”), Angela Grovey (“30 Rock”), Morris Chestnut (“Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid,” 2004) Thaddeus J. Mixson (“Candy Cane Lane,” 2023) and newcomer Aderinsola Olabode.

Q&A
hollywood
By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: I just saw “By Any Means,” and it opens with Mark Wahlberg’s character torturing someone and asking about “the bodies.” And then it’s said that he’s searching for three missing civil-rights activists. Is that the same case from “Mississippi Burning”? A: Yes, it is, though both films take enough liberties with the truth to make it hard to track. “By Any Means” (2026) suggests that real-life mafia enforcer and FBI informant Gregory Scarpa (played by Mark Wahlberg, “The Fighter,” 2010) was sent down to Mississippi more than once to essentially torture Ku Klux Klan members into confessions. It says the first case he worked on was the search for the bodies of three missing civil rights activists. This appears to be a reference to the case depicted in the Oscar-winning film “Mississippi Burning” (1988). But note that “Mississippi Burning” makes no mention of Scarpa, instead attributing the illegal interrogations leading to the location of the bodies to a fictional FBI agent named Monk (played by Badja Djola, “The Serpent and the Rainbow,” 1988). Both films admit having changed some elements of their true stories, as is usual for movies. Author Peter Lance, who wrote a book about Scarpa and his dealings with the FBI, insists that Scarpa was indeed involved in both cases. However, an article published by the Mob Museum in Las Vegas contends that “the true scope of Scarpa’s unofficial involvement in Mississippi remains unclear.”
“By Any Means” is getting a lot of criticism at the moment for the ways it bent the truth. The family of real-life civil rights activist Vernon Dahmer, whose murder forms the core story of “By Any Means,” complained that the film changes multiple facts to make the story more about Scarpa than their father. They went so far as to encourage a boycott. Q: With all the action movies that Leonardo DiCaprio has done, how has he never gotten into superhero franchises? Is he eyeing any? A: You can never say never, though the man himself has said never in the past. Leonardo DiCaprio (“Titanic,” 1997) is one of Hollywood’s most high-profile stars, so it makes sense producers would want him for superhero movies — generally their highest-profile projects. DiCaprio has said in interviews that he has been approached more than once, but that he “didn’t feel ready.”
“You never know,” he said in a 2015 interview with London-based entertainment site Shortlist. com. “They’re getting better and better as far as complex characters in these movies. I haven’t [taken a superhero role] yet. But no, I don’t rule out anything.” However, that somewhat clashes with advice he supposedly gave to up-and-coming young star Timothee Chalamet (“Call Me By Your Name,” 2017). Chalamet told The New York Times that DiCaprio gave him a simple piece of advice a few years earlier, when the younger actor was just getting his bearings in the business: “No superhero movies, no hard drugs.” And if we look at DiCaprio’s lengthy list of projects either underway or in development, he’s sticking to that advice himself: there’s not a cape among them. His next role is reportedly in the very longawaited sequel to 1995 action classic “Heat.” It’s still in pre-production with no release date planned. What’s after that is hard to say. As arguably the most in-demand star in the game, DiCaprio is currently “attached” to nearly 60 different projects, either as an actor or, more often, a producer. Q: I just saw they’re rebooting “Resident Evil” and it got me thinking: is Milla Jovovich still working? A: She is, though not in the new “Resident Evil” movie. Supermodel-turned-screen star Milla Jovovich

(“The Fifth Element,” 1997) is best known as Alice from the smash-hit zombie-action movie “Resident Evil” (2002) and its five sequels, most recently 2016’s “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.” But as you point out, that was not in fact the final chapter for the franchise, which is based on a popular video game series. There’s a new version coming out this year without Jovovich. But you could argue that she simply wouldn’t have had time to squeeze it in. She headlined three different movies in 2025 alone — “In the Lost Lands,” “Protector” and “Worldbreaker” — all action movies very much in her traditional wheelhouse. She has two other projects in production right now, and the higher-profile one takes her out of that zone a little. She’s been booked for a supporting role in one of today’s buzziest shows, the Canadian sportsthemed romantic series “Heated Rivalry.” Jovovich will play Dr. Galina Molchalina, the psychologist of one of the two main characters, in the show’s second season, which is expected to debut in the spring. Meanwhile, her independently produced action-thriller “Midnight” is currently floating around seeking distribution. But it wrapped filming back in 2024, so it’s possible “Midnight” may never see the light of day.
