Love turns to ‘War’ on HBO By Dana Simpson TV Media

hen a film or television series sees massive success after its release, the natural next step is a sequel or second season. We have seen this time and again with film franchises such as Scream, Star Wars, the Marvel Cinematic Universe and also with multiple-season series such as “Succession” and anthologies the likes of “American Horror Story.” But when a production company greenlights two seasons before the pilot has even aired, that is usually a sign of studio confidence in outstanding content. And HBO knows outstanding content. From “The Sopranos” and “Game of Thrones” to “The White Lotus” and “Hacks,” some of the best television of the past two decades, regardless of genre, has been produced by HBO. This fall, the network (and its affiliated streamers) plans to add another juggernaut to its roster, and filming is already underway for a second season. “War,” a new legal drama featuring two opposing factions in a high-profile divorce case, premieres Thursday, Oct. 1, on HBO and the HBO Max streaming service. The eight-episode series stars Sienna Miller (“Anatomy of a Scandal”) as a well-known international actress named Carla Duval, who is engaged in a contentious divorce with her husband, Morgan Henderson, played by Dominic West (“The Wire”), a big name in the tech world. The splitting couple is central to the show’s Season 1 plot, but the series goes further than to chronicle the expected emotional breakdown of a oncehappy public relationship. “‘War’ is a high-stakes legal drama following the lives of London’s most powerful lawyers,” reads the HBO logline. “[F]irms Cathcarts & Sons and Taylor & Byrne clash over a headline-grabbing legal battle, drawing ambitious young lawyer Jonathan ‘Johnny’ Warren [Archie Renaux, “Alien: Romulus,” 2024] into a ruthless world where ambition is currency, betrayal is strategy and winning is everything.” The London-set series is created, written and executive produced by BAFTA and Emmy nominee George Kay, who counts among his credits the Omar Sy (“The Intouchables,” 2011) led Netflix series “Lupin” and the Apple TV series “Hijack,” starring Idris Elba (“Luther”), and co-produced by “New Pictures (a Banijay company) and Observatory Pictures, in association with Sky and HBO” (per HBOMaxLAPress.com). Ahead of the Season 1 release, Kay met with Variety to shed a bit more light on the driving force behind the highly anticipated new drama. “I was really hungry to do a mainstream, highend TV [show] with characters at the heart of it,” Kay told Variety in the interview, adding, “I was

So I was thinking about doing this legal show because I love the idea that a case that you’re working on as a lawyer is a kind of metaphor for your own life, where you’re constantly bringing the personal into the professional.” Speaking to the fictional law firms themselves, Kay noted: “I wanted to do one traditional, older firm [and a] fresher firm with ambitions and less resources but always full of characters who are smart.” Importantly, as seen in the official trailer released by HBO and HBO Max on Aug. 6, each firm is unwaveringly dedicated to its clients and repeating the same rhetoric: “You are the wronged party here.” Whether their steadfastness is born out of confidence or stubbornness, it’s clear from jump that the two firms are as at odds as the soon-to-be exes. Emma Laird (“A Haunting in Venice,” 2023), Celia Imrie (“The Thursday Murder Club”), Aran Murphy (“Lola,” 2022), Nick Mohammed (“The Martian,” 2015), Archie Panjabi (“The Good Wife”), Shaheen Jafargholi (“Casualty”), Adrian Scarborough (“The Chelsea Detective”), Miles Jupp (“The Full Monty”), Akiya Henry (“The Rubbish World of Dave Spud”), Honor Swinton Byrne (“A Very Royal Scandal”), Alexandra Mardell (“Coronation Street”), Dylan Edwards (“Wanderlust”), Mark Quartley (“The Ipcress File”), Kartanya Maynard (“Heartbreak High”) and Steve Furst (“Testament”) also appear in the show’s flagship season. “War’s” second season, which has already begun filming in London, stars Marisa Tomei (“Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” 2026), Kelly Macdonald (“No Country for Old Men,” 2007) and David Harewood (“Supergirl”) as clients and “their

lawyers become embroiled in an explosive defamation case” (per Warner Bros. Discovery Press). “George Kay has created an incredibly compelling cast of characters who will have audiences rooting for them, despite the underhand tactics, dirty tricks and win-at-all-cost mentality they bring to battle against each other in — and out — of court,” reads a statement from New Pictures executive producer and CEO Willow Grylls about the legal drama. “We are incredibly pleased to be trusted by Sky and HBO with a twoseries order to bring their stories to viewers around the world.” Try to catch all the dirty dealings and underhanded deals when “War” begins Thursday, Oct. 1, on HBO. New episodes air weekly and will also be available to stream on HBO Max.
