Reaching for justice

Spinoff ‘Neagley’ investigates a suspicious death By Sarah Passingham TV Media

hen it comes to law enforcement, some sensitive situations are best handled by forces from outside the official system. One such avenger, Jack Reacher, has been portrayed by “Titans” actor Alan Ritchson for four heart-pounding seasons of Prime Video’s fan-favorite action series, “Reacher.” With the latest season soon coming to a close, Prime has answered viewers’ desires for more “Reacher,” with a brand-new spinoff centered around one of the show’s most popular characters. Jump right from the “Reacher” Season 4 finale into “Neagley” when it debuts on Prime Video Wednesday, Sept. 16, with all eight episodes of the new series available to stream on premiere day. Maria Sten (“Narcissa”) reprises her role of private investigator Frances Neagley, a protege of Reacher’s who’s been by his side since his Army major days but is now leading her own titular series. In the opening of the trailer for “Neagley,” she is reassured by Reacher, who tells her she can always call on him if she needs help, however, it is clear that this time, she’s the star of the show. Both Season 4 of “Reacher” and the series premiere of “Neagley” set the action off with tragedy on a subway train. Per Prime Video, “when she learns that a beloved friend from her past has been killed in a suspicious accident, she becomes hell-bent on justice. Using everything she’s learned from Jack Reacher and her time as a member of the 110 Special Investigators, Neagley puts herself on a dangerous path to uncover a menacing evil.” That friend of Neagley’s is Tommy Crane, portrayed by “Supergirl” actor Jhaleil Swaby. Though Chicago police rule his death as an accident, surmising that he got high and walked into the train, that ruling does not sit right with Neagley. Together with her crew, she sets off on her own investigation, stopping at nothing to get to the bottom of Tommy’s death. Also starring in “Neagley” are Greyston Holt (“Riverdale”) as Det. Hudson Riley, Adeline Rudolph (“Mortal Kombat II,” 2026) as Renee Birdwhistle, Jasper Jones (“To Die For”) as Keno, Matthew Del Negro (“Mayor of Kingstown”) as Pierce Woodrow and Damon Herriman (“The Artful Dodger”) as cult leader Lawrence Cole. Ritchson guest stars as Reacher. The debut season follows Neagley as she further investigates the case of Tommy’s death on the tracks of the L. She is joined in her efforts by Det. Riley, who helps as an official member of law enforcement who takes interest in looking at the case as a homicide. Keno witnessed Tommy’s death, and once Neagley tracks him down to get

“Reacher” and where does it overlap with its originating series? Sten explained: “It’s all the things that we know and love about ‘Reacher.’ It’s the person who stands up for the little guy, it’s all the action that we love. I think where it really separates is there is a lot of emotionality to our show. I think especially halfway through the season, there’s a particular episode that really changes the language of what the show is. I think the writers did such an amazing job in getting creative about establishing this as its own thing that can do things like that.” Catch the Season 4 finale of “Reacher” and the series premiere of “Neagley” Wednesday, Sept. 16, on Prime Video.
