APeace in the DCU Gunn, Safran welcome second season of ‘Peacemaker’
s famously sung by great American singer/songwriter Bob Dylan: “The times they are a-changin’.” And while this sentiment continues to be both true and relevant to the world in which we live some 61 years after the song’s release, the same is also true for another (fictional) world: the DC Universe.
When American filmmaker James Gunn and British producer Peter Safran (both of “Superman,” 2025) took over as co-chiefs of DC Studios in 2023, they announced that the existing DC Extended Universe would be abandoned in favor of a more streamlined sequence of reboots and reimaginings. Thankfully for fans of the John Cena (“Bumblebee,” 2018) character Peacemaker, the patriot — like DC mainstays Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman — has made the cut. With this in mind, the muscly, no-nonsense hero is back this month in a big way, more than three years after his titular series premiered Jan. 13, 2022.
“Peacemaker” Season 2 premieres Thursday, Aug. 21, on HBO Max, with episodes releasing weekly until the series’ mid-October finale.
As originally described by HBO Max (formerly Max) via its parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, “‘Peacemaker’ follows the explosive escapades of the character that John Cena reprises in the aftermath of James Gunn’s 2021 film ‘The Suicide Squad’ — a compellingly vainglorious man who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it.”
Now, after Peacemaker, aka Christopher Smith, has recovered from his injuries and waged his own brand of justice for eight episodes straight in Season 1, he “discovers an alternate world where life is everything he wishes it could be” in the second season.
But as HBO Max press reports, “this discovery also forces him to face his traumatic past and take the future into his own hands.”
Cena will, of course, return as Smith/Peacemaker, having vanquished a skin cancer diagnosis for a second time in early 2025. Determined to help others (in true superhero fashion), the wrestler-turned-actor has since addressed how he has been using his fame to spread the word about proper sun safety.
“Celebrities can help break down the stigma around skin cancer,” Cena told Healthline in May, adding that having a wide platform makes “it easier for others to seek help and advice.”
The actor, well-known for his hulking good looks and goofy charm, completed his final
cancer treatment early this year and announced a clean bill of health on March 31, 2025 (per OncoDaily.com). Since then, Cena has defied the odds and made wrestling history when he won his 17th WWE Championship title at WrestleMania 41 on April 20 — a comeback not unlike that of his character, who healed early in Season 1 and went on to kick some serious butt later in the season.
As for Cena’s “Peacemaker” co-stars this season, Danielle Brooks (“Orange Is the New Black”) returns as Leota Adebayo, the “daughter of Suicide Squad founder and A.R.G.U.S. leader Amanda Waller” (Viola Davis, “How to Get Away With Murder”), along with fan favorites Freddie Stroma (“Pitch Perfect,” 2012) as Vigilante, Jennifer Holland (“Brightburn,” 2019) as Agent Emilia Harcourt and Steve Agee (“New Girl”) as Agent John Economos.
Variety also confirmed that Peacemaker’s racist father, August “Auggie” Smith, aka
White Dragon, will return in the form of “The Faculty” (1998) and “Reacher” actor Robert Patrick, who originated the despicable role in the Season 1. Naturally, Peacemaker’s trusty avian sidekick Eagly, a digitally created eagle voiced by Dee Bradley Baker (“American Dad!”), also returns for Season 2.
Additions to the series cast include Tim Meadows (“Mean Girls,” 2004), Sol Rodriguez (“Devious Maids”) and Purge franchise star Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., who has more than likely come to settle the score with Peacemaker (spoilers for 2021’s “The Suicide Squad”), who killed his son, Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman, “For All Mankind”), in Gunn’s canon-establishing “Squad” film.
When Den of Geek magazine asked Cena about his expectations for the future of the “Peacemaker” series, he simply commented that “James Gunn made a sacred oath that he’s not bringing characters back from the
dead,” adding that “he already broke that [oath] by bringing Peacemaker back after he died in ‘The Suicide Squad.’”
With that in mind, Cena concluded: “I can confidently say that the future of Peacemaker is one that will defy the odds.”

Kids and celebs team up for impressive builds in ‘Lego Masters Jr.’

Some very lucky kids are about to live out every child’s dream: access to unlimited Lego bricks and a blank canvas for their imaginations to run wild. In the brandnew series “Lego Masters Jr.,” premiering Monday, Aug. 18, on Fox, five pairs of junior builders spanning ages nine to 17 get to team up with celebrity Lego enthusiasts to compete in weekly challenges and bring their creations to life, brick by brick. Kelly Osbourne (“The Masked Singer”) hosts.
In each episode, the Lego building teams work under the pressure of the countdown clock to piece together themed sculptures. When time runs out, they must face the judges, who are expert builders themselves that you might recognize from Fox’s adult-size Legobuilding series. Brickmaster Amy Corbett, who’s also a judge for “Lego Masters,” and one of the finalists from its first season, Boone Langston, make up the “Lego Masters Jr.” judging panel. Impressing the judges each week not only gets the little brickmasters closer to earning the title of “Lego Masters Jr.” champions, but a grand prize totaling nearly $50,000. Andy Richter (“Love, Victor”), Ravi Patel (“Animal Control”), Porsha Williams (“The Real Housewives of Atlanta”), Alison Sweeney (“Days of Our Lives”) and Jordin Sparks (“American Idol”) are the celebrity partners joining the contestants. In an official trailer for the upcoming series, the contestants warm the heart with their enthusiasm, even falling out of their chairs with excitement before tugging at heartstrings when the waterworks start as the stress of the competition becomes too much. The little engineers construct a speeding Lego car, and use the Disney castle, Harry Potter and Ninjago as inspiration for weekly build challenges.
So, who are these tiny brickmasters? Working with Richter are 13-year-old neighbors and best friends Will and Crosby from Minneapolis. Best friends Stella (12) and Chelle (14) have Sparks on their team, who shared in a Variety exclusive on the new series that she is “not a Master level yet, but I’m pretty good at following the instruction booklets!” So it sounds like they make a solid trio together.
Siblings Max (nine) and Zoe (13) from Greenville, South Carolina, are almost neighbors to their celeb helper, Williams, from the Peach State. The reality star told Variety that Lego is a big deal in her household, saying, “my daughter Pilar thinks it’s the coolest thing that I am on ‘Lego Masters,’ and when she gets older, she will be the first to sign up.”
Brother Ajay (13) and Zak (11) know exactly what they came to “Lego Masters Jr.” to do and are prepared to execute their vision. Their ce-
lebrity helper, Sweeney, was on the receiving end of their instruction and said in the trailer, “I haven’t been bossed around like this in a long time.” Finally, Patel, a devoted “Lego Masters” fan, is teamed up with Vincent (nine) and Hudson (11) from Portland, Oregon. Patel told Variety that he is a lifelong Lego fan, reached out to be on the show and can’t wait to watch with his kids. He is matched for intensity with his partners, all three of them showed up ready to fight wearing their karate gi.
While this season is the first time kids get to play with the Lego buckets that dreams are made of, “Lego Masters” is no stranger to a change in format. Between seasons, former contestants are welcomed back to build alongside celebrity guests ready to brick the halls in “Lego Masters: Celebrity Holiday Bricktacular.”
Stars like the late “Will & Grace” actor Leslie Jordan, former NFL running back Marshawn Lynch and “Poker Face” actor Lil Rel Howery all got into the holiday spirit by building enchanting Lego creations with the brickmasters.
The regular Fox series, based on the British series of the same name, has run for five seasons with Will Arnett, the voice of Lego Batman in 2014’s “The Lego Movie,” as the host. It was announced in June that Season 6 of “Lego Masters” will be welcoming a new host in Nick Cannon, as Arnett passes the torch. Cannon is, of course, known for hosting the Fox staple “The Masked Singer” and also stepped in to keep “Beat Shazam” rolling while regular host Jamie Foxx (“Back in Action,” 2025) recovered from a stroke in 2023.
“It’s an honor to join the series and host another show with my Fox family,” Cannon said in a statement, adding, “I can’t wait to see the insane creations and give away a big bag of money to the best of the best.”
Get ready for some soothing Lego fun with no chance of stepping on a lone brick or misreading the instruction booklet from the comfort of your couch when “Lego Masters Jr.” premieres Monday, Aug. 18, on Fox.

“Deb’s House” - Season 2
We TV and ALLBLK’s first music competition reality series, “Deb’s House,” premieres its second season Friday, Aug. 22, on ALLBLK. Following famed music mogul Deb Antney — who pioneered the careers of several high-profile artists, such as Gucci Mane (“Wake Up in the Sky”), French Montana (“Finna Get Loose”) and Nicki Minaj (“Super Freaky Girl”) — this latest season sees Antney harnessing the power of social media as she turns to TikTok to find the next R&B superstar. Q: Will there be a fourth season of “Bosch: Legacy” and a second season for “Ballard”?
A: If no news is good news, then I have good news and bad news.
There’s no word yet on the fate of the Amazon Prime series “Ballard,” but its parent series, “Bosch: Legacy,” is officially dead.
Amazon said that “Bosch: Legacy’s” third season, which debuted in March, would be its last. But before it ended, it gave us “Ballard” — essentially handing the reins of the franchise from Harry Bosch (played by Titus Welliver, “The Town,” 2010) to Det. Renee Ballard (Maggie Q, “Divergent,” 2014). Det. Ballard appeared as a character in the series finale of “Bosch: Legacy,” then just a few months later, in July, she got her very own show.
The future of that show is still unclear. Because it only came out a few weeks ago, it’s not surprising that Amazon hasn’t made a decision yet on a second season. But it’s certainly still frustrating for fans like yourself, who just want to know that the show’s universe will live on.
It’s a rich universe, thanks to the fact that it’s all based on novels by literary hit machine Michael Connelly. Both Ballard and Bosch first appeared in Connelly’s books, and Connelly has taken an active hand in writing and producing the shows as well.
And of course, as you probably know, the “Legacy” part of “Bosch: Legacy” comes from the fact that it, too, is a sequel — the original “Bosch” series ran for seven seasons on Prime, ending in 2021.
Q: Why don’t I hear about Sarah Michelle Gellar much anymore? Is she retired?
A: You’re about to hear a lot more about Sarah Michelle Gellar (“I Know What You Did Last Summer,” 1997), and the reason why might also be the reason you haven’t heard much from her in a while.
Gellar was a teen star in the ‘90s, and that status culminated with “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” the WB (later CW) action series on which she played the titular scourge of the vampire community.
“Buffy” ended in 2003, and though she’s appeared in literally dozens of projects since then, none of them caught on to the same degree.
But her new project stands a great chance of recapturing that old “Buffy” magic, because it’s ... more “Buffy.” She has a leading role (it’s still not clear if it’s “the” lead role) in a new reboot series that’s being kept so secret that we don’t even know the official title yet.
What we know is that it’s currently in production, and that Gellar will return as Buffy, but this
time she’ll be guiding a new Slayer (in the show’s universe, that’s the kind of title that gets capitalized).
A lot of this we know because Gellar shared a photo on her Instagram account from the first table read in July.
It will air on the Hulu streaming service, and it’s currently slated for release sometime next year; that timing checks out if they’re just doing the table read now.
