The perfect recipe for a memorable beach weekend includes good friends, good food and a pajama dance party. After weathering the aftermath of a difficult loss, bestselling cookbook author Hollis Shaw (Jennifer Garner, “The Last Thing He Told Me”) decides to shake off her grief with a very special girls’ weekend in the new eight-part drama miniseries “The Five Star Weekend,” premiering Thursday, July 9, on Peacock. Stream the first three episodes on premiere day, with the remaining episodes dropping every Thursday.
Hollis lives a picture-perfect life with her loyal “Hungry With Hollis” community, easy warmth and hospitality and loving family. That life gets flipped on its head when the news of her husband’s sudden death in a car accident arrives on her doorstep in the form of two police officers, just as Hollis is preparing one of her most favorite holiday recipes in the official trailer for the upcoming series.
Seasons change, and as time goes on, Hollis decides to plan a weekend of hosting at her Nantucket beach house. Invited to join her on the picturesque island are four friends, each from different parts of her life, together making up the five stars of her five-star weekend: Hollis’s childhood best friend, Tatum McKenzie (Chloe Sevigny, “Monster”); her college roommate, Dru-Ann Jones (Regina Hall, “One Battle After Another,” 2025); her close parenting friend, Brooke Kirtley (D’Arcy Carden, “Sunny Nights”); and a new friend whom Hollis met through social media, Gigi Ling (Gemma Chan, “The Creator,” 2023).
Though Hollis’s life looked like a dream from the outside, losing her husband emphasized the cracks in the veneer. Now that it is just the two of them, Hollis struggles to connect with her daughter Caroline (Harlow Jane, “She Came to Me,” 2023) as they both live in the lonely beach house. An aspiring filmmaker, Caroline has been pushing herself away from Hollis as she processes her father’s death. Hollis’s marriage to her husband, Matthew (Josh Hamilton, “Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen”), when he was alive, was waning, making her grief for him and their partnership complicated.
The girls’ weekend is Hollis’s attempt to breathe some life into her home and foster new connections as she rekindles sacred friendships and maybe inches closer into her daughter’s good graces. Something more than friendship might be brewing, though, as someone else from Hollis’s past crashes her plans. A childhood sweetheart, Jack (Timothy Olyphant, “Alien: Earth”), returns to Hollis’s life, making a big splash at the girls’ weekend.
The recurring cast includes David Denman
(“Peacemaker”) as Kyle McKenzie; Rob Huebel (“Running Point”) as Charlie Kirtley; Judy Greer (“Reboot”) as Electra; West Duchovny (“Painkiller”) as Aubrey; Tory Devon Smith (“Cherish the Day”) as John Mark; Henry Eikenberry (“Lisa Frankenstein,” 2024) as Dylan Leclaire; and Roberta Colindrez (“A League of Their Own”) as Sunny.
The series was adapted from the 2023 novel of the same name from author Elin Hilderbrand. Creator and showrunner Bekah Brunstetter (“This Is Us”) immediately saw the book’s potential for series adaptation after reading the novel. She told Entertainment Weekly, “I found it to be this incredible combination of lightness and depth, which is really hard to find in a series. I just really believe in TV shows that uplift but also challenge at the same time.”
Garner was a natural fit for the lead, of course, as the actress has her own social media following for sharing recipes and cooking adventures. She differs from Hollis in approach, though, she told EW, saying, “She’s such a beautiful baker; the opposite of me. I’m a very kind of messy baker.”
About her character’s strained relationship with her daughter, Garner said, “She’s not wanting to show her daughter how she’s grieving. She doesn’t want to burden her. At the same time, she’s almost scared of her daughter’s grief. They’re circling each other in this incredibly painful way.”
Hollis brings all of her friends together to help her out of the rut she is in, but each of the weekend invitees has their own problems that they’re dealing with. Gigi, who meets Hollis for the first time in Nantucket, is a commercial airline pilot. She is buttoned up and put together from the outside, but under the surface, Gigi is “kind of a hot mess,” Chan told EW.
Tatum, who grew up with Hollis and never left town, faces health issues, while sports agent DruAnn waits out a social media hate-storm after making unsavory public comments about one of her clients. Finally Brooke, who appears to be waffling over exploring her sexuality in the trailer, seems to share a connection with Sunny at a bar.
The TV landscape isn’t exactly overrun with series about middle-age women all living very dif-
ferent lives. One beloved sitcom may come to mind, uncharitably name-dropped in the trailer, “enjoy your ‘Golden Girls’ weekend,” Caroline snaps at her mother.
For Carden, this time in her life is obviously rich with the kind of drama that fills a miniseries. She told EW that midlife “is such an interesting age, because there’s so much happening.” Carden continued: “In the same friend group, you could have somebody whose kid is going to college and somebody who’s pregnant, and somebody who is in their second marriage and somebody who’s divorced. The stories are endless.”

‘Ellis’ is on it British sleuth investigates nearly cold cases in second season

Acountry’s crime rates — like its employment rates, birth rates and other social metrics — fluctuate depending on anything from leadership and funding to citizenship happiness and comfort. In Finland, for example, a country that Gallup’s 272-page 2026 World Happiness Report just named the happiest country on the planet for the ninth consecutive year, homicide clearance rates are maintaining at around 98% (meaning that approximately 98% of all reported homicides in Finland result in a conviction).
Gallup’s data, collected across 147 countries and based on metrics such as “social support,” “life expectancy” and “perceptions of corruption” among other considerations, ranks the United States at No. 23 on the happiness scale (the U.S. has a roughly 50% solve rate), with the United Kingdom trailing slightly behind in 29th position after recovering from what BBC reported as “woefully low” clearance rates in 2019, often leading to cold cases.
But who does one call when a criminal case hits a wall? Who ensures that there are fewer cold cases on the books? In England — on TV, anyway — that call goes to DCI Ellis, a brilliant homicide detective played by three-time Olivier Award winner Sharon D. Clarke (“Holby City”).
Season 2 of “Inspector Ellis,” also known simply as “Ellis,” premieres Monday, July 6, on Acorn TV.
“Inspector Ellis” first premiered on Halloween 2024 in the U.K. With its uniquely short first season (even by British standards), the three-episode procedural about a pair of detectives who help police solve failing investigations garnered considerable attention before ultimately earning a second-season renewal in May 2025. And although the four-episode sophomore season released at home on Channel 5 this past March, it comes to North America this summer thanks to AMC’s Acorn TV.
“Season 2 sees DCI Ellis (Clarke), who together with her colleague DS Harper [Andrew Gower, “Outlander”], face a new wave of fractured communities and suspicious deaths that test not only her forensic brilliance but her resilience,” reads the description, per AMC Global Media. “This season takes them from a rural village, where the suspicious death of a beloved community leader exposes long-nursed resentments, to the industrial shadow of a stoneworks, where the death of a young woman reveals a hidden network of coercion and exploitation. Every case peels back layers of silence, ambition and betrayal.”
The trailer, released June 3 by Acorn TV on YouTube, shows the officers of a small English precinct being introduced to Ellis and Harper as the duo prepares to take the reins on a murder inves-
tigation wherein the crime appears to have been staged as a workplace accident. Punctuated by a powerful orchestral score and words of praise for both the show and Clarke (hailed by The Hollywood Reporter as “a titan”), the trailer showcases the rolling hills, stone-laden villages and winding roadways of Ashenham and Elmsly, both fictional towns set in Northern England and filmed in Northern Ireland.
“It’s location-based, so you’re not in the same police station every week with the same colleagues,” Clarke says per Mirror.co.uk. “You get out and about and you see different people, and such beautiful, lovely creative talent have joined the Ellis family this year.”
Joining Clarke and Gower in Ashenham this season are John Hollingworth (“Poldark”), Joel Morris (“Gentleman Jack”), Sasha DesouzaWillock (“Deep Heat”), Cariad Lloyd (“Peep Show”), Sonny Walker (“The Gathering”), Niamh Blackshaw (“Waterloo Road”) and Keir Charles (“Green Wing”), while Matilda Freeman (“Coronation Street”), Mark Addy (“A Knight’s Tale,” 2001), Stephen Tompkinson (“Ballykissangel”), Jack Bandeira (“Happy Valley”), Sophie Stanton (“Beautiful Thing,” 1996), Caroline O’Neill (“Queer as Folk”) and Judy Flynn (“The House of Eliott”) co-star in Elmsly.
Allison Harding (“Beauty and the Beast,” 2017) and Charlotte McCurry (“Titanic Sinks Tonight”) also return this season as ACC Alison Leighton and DC Kate Trent, respectively.
As for whether “Ellis” is expected for a third season, no renewal has yet been announced. But in the event that the procedural should not be renewed again, it would not be due to a lack of interest on the part of the cast.
“If we can keep entertaining audiences and they keep wanting more, then that’s what we’ll do,” Gower told Radio Times in May. “I think the more series we have or the more episodes we have ... then that means that we’re doing something right and that means that this relationship can grow.”

While all eyes are on North American sporting stadiums for the FIFA World Cup, Food Network hosts its own international competition from the supermarket aisles. “Guy’s Grocery Games: Global Games,” a new tournamentstyle spinoff series hosted by American restaurateur Guy Fieri (“Diners, Drive-ins and Dives”), premieres Thursday, July 9, on Food Network.
Designed in the image of previous “Guy’s Grocery Games” tournaments — think last year’s Greatest of All Time tournament or the Tournament of Champions, for example — “Global Games” sees eight returning chefs compete using their international cuisine of choice for the grand

“While Food Network has not yet revealed the tournament structure,” reads a June 4 article from Parade.com, who initially broke Food Network’s July programming schedule, “fans may see similarities to last year’s G.O.A.T. competition. “Project Runway” makes a fashionable return for its biggest season ever, premiering Thursday, July 9, on Disney+. Twenty-two seasons in, “Project Runway” still knows how to make an entrance. The competition that first hit the runway on Bravo back in 2004 is back, and for the first time in the show’s history, 22 designers are competing at once, each bringing a different background, point of view and ambition into the workroom. The goal is simple
enough: survive the challenges, impress the judges and walk away with a career-defining win. Q: I just saw an old ‘60s movie called “The Lost World” that was about dinosaurs still living in the modern day. And I know that the second “Jurassic Park” movie was called “The Lost World.” Is the “Jurassic Park” sequel somehow a remake of this old movie?
A: It got confusing once the film adaptations happened, but author Michael Crichton, who wrote the books that were the basis of the “Jurassic Park” movies, borrowed the title as an homage. But not from the 1960 movie that you saw (I did say it’s confusing).
Your film was, in fact, an adaptation of the book “The Lost World” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (more famous for the Sherlock Holmes stories). It was, as you say, about an island in Central America where dinosaurs still walk the Earth.
When Crichton was writing a sequel to his hit novel “Jurassic Park,” in which his genetically reengineered dinosaurs were transplanted to an island in Central America, he selected “The Lost World” as a title as a nod to the Doyle book that went there first.
Though the 1997 film adaptation of Crichton’s “The Lost World” made more money (more than $600 million in global box office), Doyle’s book has been adapted more.
The 1960 version you saw was the second movie version. The first was made all the way back in 1925, making it a landmark in early filmmaking. And there have been many more adaptations since, including a 2001 miniseries version by BBC and A&E and a looser, three-season TV se-
ries made for syndication in 1999 (it aired on the WB Network in North America).
Whereas the 1997 version of Crichton’s novel is the only adaptation that’s been made so far; that might have something to do with the fact that his book is still under copyright and would be expensive to get the rights to, whereas Doyle’s book is now in the public domain.
Q: What’s Naomi Watts been up to?
A: Spoken like someone who didn’t see the opinion-splitting Hulu drama “All’s Fair.”
Naomi Watts (“Mulholland Drive,” 2001) executive-produced and co-starred in the first season of the legal drama, which was frankly better known and got a lot of press for starring celebrity socialite Kim Kardashian (“Keeping Up With the Kardashians”).
It was released in November, and was almost
immediately renewed for a second season. Plus, it’s been confirmed that Watts will be back as Liberty Ronson, one of the show’s gang of high-flying divorce attorneys.
Production was slated for this spring, but no release date has been set yet. We can hope for a similar November release, but Hulu doesn’t have to stick to that schedule.
That’s just one of the things on Watts’s plate at the moment.
She recently completed filming of a pair of feature-length dramas: the political thriller “The Housewife” and the ensemble family drama “Mother Courage.” However, there’s no word on a release date of either of these.
If you’re asking what Watts has been up to, you probably also missed her other recent TV project. Earlier this year, she was part of the ensemble cast of “Love Story,” a FX and Disney+ miniseries about the love affair between John F. Kennedy Jr. (played by fashion model Paul Anthony Kelly, “American Horror Story”) and Carolyn Bessette (Sarah Pidgeon, “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” 2025). Watts had the enviable role of American icon Jackie Kennedy Onassis.
Q: Is “SurrealEstate” coming back for another season? And will Sarah Levy still be involved?
A: Unfortunately, there will be no more “SurrealEstate,” with or without Sarah Levy (most notably of “Schitt’s Creek” fame).
The high-concept paranormal drama, about a
team of realtors who specialize in clearing haunted houses to make them sellable, ran for three seasons on SyFy in the U.S. and on CTV Sci-Fi Channel in its native Canada.
Unfortunately, Levy herself took to Instagram to announce that it would not be getting a fourth, and to give it a suitably emotional farewell.
“This show carried me through so many different seasons of my life — moments I’ll forever associate with the people, places and memories made,” she wrote, before going on to thank the rest of the cast and particularly series creator George Olson (“First Person Shooter,” 2022). That’s the bad news. There is some good news, though it comes with a big ol’ grain of salt. As of last fall, she was in production on a new movie, called “Run,” but there’s no way to know when it will come out.
The film, in which she stars as a woman who trains to run a marathon as a way of dealing with personal turmoil, was announced back in September. In October, she shared images, again on her Instagram, from the film set.
But nothing has been heard about it since. That’s not necessarily bad news for an indie movie — there’s still post-production to do, along with working out distribution — but it means it could be a while before “Run” hits the streets.
