‘Nautilus’ embarks on Nemo’s origin story adventure
By Sarah Passingham TV Media
Deep beneath the fabled Pillars of Halvar lies Viking treasure waiting to be plucked from the abyss. The only thing stopping one enterprising prisoner from liberating it is a vessel that can reach it. Inspired by the enduring science fiction novel “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea” by author Jules Verne, “Nautilus,” premiering Sunday, June 29, on AMC and AMC+, tells the story of how Nemo took the helm of the infamous submarine.
Portrayed by “Star Trek: Discovery” star Shazad Latif, audiences meet Capt. Nemo in “Nautilus” as a prisoner of the East India Mercantile Company. An Indian prince stripped of his status and ripped from his family, Nemo is forced to work for the company, designing the engines of a secret submersible, the Nautilus.
“The corporation’s more powerful than any country,” Director Crawley (Damien Garvey, “The Artful Dodger”) says in the official trailer for the upcoming series. “We must maintain dominance. That is why the Nautilus was developed.” Conceived as a weapon to maintain the colonizer’s borders, Nemo emancipates the vessel for his own exploits. When the company’s plans change, forcing them to launch the Nautilus earlier than anticipated, Nemo’s rebellion gathers at a moment’s notice to get ahead of them.
In an act of revenge against the people who took everything from him, Nemo plots to steal the ship and set off on an adventure to retrieve buried riches. With a hastily-assembled crew on board, Nemo leaves the penal colony in the periscope’s rear-view, but the East India Mercantile Company are not willing to let the Nautilus go without a fight.
Also starring in the 10-part adventure series are Georgia Flood (“Apples Never Fall”) as hostage-turned-crew member Humility Lucas; Céline Menville (“Emily in Paris”) as Loti; Thierry Frémont (“Das Boot”) as Benoit; Richard E. Grant (“The Franchise”) as White Rajah; Anna Torv (“The Newsreader”) as Revna; and Noah Taylor (“So Long, Marianne”) as Capt. Mogg.
It’s nearly impossible to quietly execute a prisoner uprising, and Nemo’s big departure only gives him and his crew a bit of a head start.
“She is mine. I want her back,” Crawley says of the pilfered vessel in the trailer. He is talking to the right guy, Youngblood (Jacob Collins-Levy, “Young Wallander”), who tells Crawley: “If you’re looking for someone to bring Nemo back in chains, I’m your man.”
It’s not hard to find Nemo’s trail, as it seems he makes quite an impression on everyone he meets.
Described by various characters as a convict, pirate, stubborn, brave and angry in the trailer, Nemo is on a mission to get to the mythic treasure he’s after, letting the undetectable submarine be the cover that his spirit does not afford him. There is simply too much on the line to worry about anything more than being the first to lay eyes on the buried riches that might be the only thing to secure everyone’s sovereignty.
Along the way, Nemo and the crew of the Nautilus encounter formidable deep sea creatures and explore the incredible unknown landscape of the ocean floor on the way to their destination of the North East Passage. Chased at sea and on land by those who want either the same fortune they are after or the treasure of the Nautilus, Nemo and the crew must work together to maintain their freedom.
“Nautilus” was created and written by James Dormer (“Devils”) and series directors include Michael Matthews (“Love and Monsters,” 2020), Ben C. Lucas (“The Wilds”) and Isabelle Sieb (“Shetland”).
Latif, who will be seen next as Edgar Linton in the buzzy Emerald Fennell (“Promising Young Woman,” 2020) -directed adaptation of the timeless Emily Bronte-penned novel “Wuthering Heights” early next year, spoke to Yahoo UK about portraying a new angle of another well-known character.
“It’s very rare you get the origin story of a character who’s usually in the old film — the James Mason [”A Star is Born,” 1954] film and all the iterations of it — he’s a mysterious character,” the “Toast of London” actor explained.
“In the book as well, you don’t really know his past, he’s very vague and that’s sort of the thing, but in this, we get to explore this very flawed, very complex character who’s on a ship with 10 other brown men, we rarely get
shows like that,” Latif continued.
The North American premiere of “Nautilus” has been on deck for a while. The series was initially ordered and produced as a Disney+ venture, but in August 2023, the streamer dropped the series — which had already been filmed — to cut costs, just one of many projects that were scrapped that year by major entertainment companies. “Nautilus” was picked up and has aired through other distributors internationally and finally makes its debut this side of the pond very soon.
Exploring new depths, “Nautilus” premieres Sunday, June 29, on AMC and AMC+.

No, it’s not a dream: “The Sandman” is returning to Netflix. To be released across two volumes, the first of which premieres Thursday, July 3, on the streamer, Season 2 of the dark fantasy series couldn’t come at a better time for many longtime fans of the series’ now-controversial author and co-creator, Neil Gaiman.
Best known for his novels “Good Omens,” “Stardust,” “American Gods” and “Coraline” — all of which have been adapted to the screen in some capacity — Gaiman has recently become the subject of several sexual assault allegations by fans and former employees, all of which he has denied. With up to eight victims having come forward as of this past January, fans of Gaiman’s work have been calling the author into question, and many of them will be using the planned ending of “The Sandman” to walk away from the author.
Although the timing of “The Sandman’s” summer finale (to be released with Volume 2 on July 23) does seem to reflect recent news regarding Gaiman’s alleged crimes, series co-creators and showrunners David S. Goyer (“The Dark Knight,” 2008) and Allan Heinberg (“Wonder Woman,” 2017) have stated that it was always the plan to finish the series after two seasons.
“’The Sandman’ series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season,” Heinberg shared in a Jan. 31 post on social media site X. “We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team all back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics’ loyal readers as well as fans of our show.”
Comprised of 11 episodes overall (six in Volume 1, five in Volume 2), the second and final season of “The Sandman” continues following Morpheus (Tom Sturridge, “Sweetbitter”), aka Dream, who “is captured in an occult ritual in 1916” (per Deadline). “After being held captive for 106 years, Dream escapes and sets out to restore order to his realm, the Dreaming.”
More specifically (Season 1 spoilers ahead), Season 2 of “The Sandman” picks up a couple weeks after the Season 1 finale. With both the destructive Dream Vortex and nightmarish figure The Corinthean (Boyd Holbrook,”A Complete Unknown,” 2024) finally abolished, Dream has turned over a new leaf and even offered some much-needed assistance to his estranged wife, Calliope (Melissanthi Mahut, “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga,” 2020). Moving forward, Dream vows to look ahead to the future
and let sleeping dogs lie. Unfortunately, Hell has other plans for the Endless, and Lucifer (Gwendoline Christie, “Game of Thrones”) and Mazikeen (Cassie Clare, “The Witcher”) are not going to let Dream rest easy after he humiliated them in Episode 4.
While the second season is a continuation of the first, featuring returning cast and crew alike, Heinberg did share a few creative changes with Netflix’s press team during an April interview.
“Design-wise, Dream has a new palace which symbolizes his intense desire to move on from the events of Season 1,” Heinberg stated. “We also explore a number of entirely new time periods, worlds and realms.”
Reassuring viewers that this creative change is a good one, Heinberg recognizes that many fans of the show have come to Netflix as fans of the comic book series first, and so their allegiances are likely to be with the show’s accurate reflection of the source material. With this in mind, Heinberg acknowledges that “all the designs — the sets, the costumes, the props, the VFX — have their roots in the comics.”
Gaiman’s “Sandman” comic books were originally released between 1989 and 1996 and feature several protagonists with complex storylines, rather than just that of Morpheus/Dream. While Netflix’s current version of “The Sandman” comes to a close, there has not yet been any announcement made to indicate whether a spinoff could eventually take shape.
That said, although some Gaiman productions are still moving forward as of writing, such as Prime Video’s series adaptation of the 2005 novel “Anansi Boys,” many production houses and streamers are choosing to distance themselves from the controversy.
As reported by the BBC in January, the third season of “Prime Video’s ‘Good Omens’ will now end with one 90-minute episode, with Gaiman no longer involved in the production” and “Netflix has cancelled ‘Dead Boy Detectives,’” although the BBC does acknowledge that “it’s not clear if this was related to the allegations.”
Unscramble the letters for each word to reveal five movies and TV shows. Then, rearrange the circled letters to discover the actor who has appeared in all five.

Enjoy your Independence Day with a side of hot-and-delicious barbecue, as grill-loving episodes of “BBQ Brawl” and “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” air on Food Network all day Friday, July 4.
To start the day off strong, grab a bib, some napkins and dive into four delicious episodes from Season 6 of “BBQ Brawl.” This mouthwatering series joins celebrity chefs Bobby Flay (“Beat Bobby Flay”) and Michael Symon (“Symon’s Dinners Cooking Out”) as they coach eight of the country’s most respected barbecue cooks through a slate of increasingly difficult barbecue feats. This season, Maneet Chauhan (“Maneet’s Eats”) and Antonia Lofaso
(“Guy’s Grocery Games”) hop on board as the series’ esteemed team captains, each bringing their own unique flavors to the cookout.
First, Bobby fights to defend his culinary crown against Maneet and Antonia in an episode that finds the bunch working side-by-side in a “build-a-better-burger” relay race that offers a finger lickin’ good advantage to its winner. Throughout the day, fans can watch as the chefs tackle spicy challenges; cook global dishes over live-fire cooking apparatuses from around the world; take part in a blind taste test and more, concluding with a “Texas-sized” chili cook-off meant to feed a crowd of hungry locals.
When Flay, Symon and the rest sign off for the day, Guy Fieri (“Tournament of Champions”) takes the wheel, offering
viewers a cross-country exploration of some of the best barbecue, burger and rib joints America has to offer as he drives coast to coast looking for the tastiest (and messiest) eats around.
From smash burgers in Boston to smokin’ wings in Vermont, Fieri covers some of the hottest spots in the east, tasting smoked bacon meatloaf, carnitas and barbacoa in Georgia; wild boar sausage and house-cured bacon in Florida; and a “Texas-style” spot serving southern comfort in Virginia.

“Heads of State” (2025)
Two world leaders, one deadly mission. Premiering Wednesday, July 2, on Prime Video, “Heads of State” is an action-packed comedy in which rivals must work together to save both themselves … and the world. Their public rivalry has made headlines and created tension between their countries, but everything changes when a diplomatic mission spirals into chaos, and U.S. President Will Derringer (John Cena, “The Suicide Squad,” 2021) and U.K. Prime Minister Sam Clarke (Idris Elba, “Thor: Ragnarok,” 2017) become the unexpected targets of an unknown enemy and find themselves on the run. Suddenly, these two world leaders have no choice but to work together. On the run and far from home, they team up with Noel (Priyanka Chopra-Jonas, “Baywatch,” 2017), a brilliant MI6 agent who saves them, one dangerous situation after another. As they dodge attacks and attempt to uncover who’s behind it all, the president and prime minister slowly become unlikely friends and heroes. Starring Paddy Considine (“The World’s End,” 2013), Jack Quaid (“The Hunger Games,” 2012) and Carla Gugino (“Watchmen,” 2009). Directed by Ilya Naishuller (“Nobody,” 2021), written by Josh Appelbaum (“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” 2014) and executive produced by Cena, Elba, Appelbaum and Marcus Viscidi (“We’re the Millers,” 2013).
“The Old Guard 2” (2025)
Immortality has its price and the past is coming back with a vengeance when “The Old Guard 2” lands Wednesday, July 2, on Netflix. Andy (Charlize Theron, “Snow White and the Huntsman,” 2012) and her team of immortals emerge from hiding to confront a powerful new threat that could shatter everything they’ve protected for centuries. Picking up where the first film left off, Quynh (Veronica Ngo, “The Creator,” 2023) has resurfaced after centuries of imprisonment in a sunken iron coffin and she has her sights set on revenge. As they brace for her
wrath, another enters the battlefield: the first of the immortals, Discord (Uma Thurman, “Batman & Robin,” 1997), a formidable force who wants to erase Andy’s legacy for good. As old grudges and ancient powers collide, Andy and her team must form new alliances to help them with their mission. Based on the graphic novel series by Greg Rucka (“Heart of Stone,” 2023) with the screenplay by Sarah L. Walker (“The Secrets She Keeps”), “The Old Guard 2” is directed by Victoria Mahoney (“Yelling to the Sky,” 2011), with Denis L. Stewart (“Jurassic World: Rebirth,” 2025) and Marco Valerio Pugini (“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” 2023) serving as executive producers. KiKi Layne (“Native Son,” 2019), Matthias Schoenaerts (“The Danish Girl,” 2015), Marwan Kenzari (“Aladdin,” 2019), Luca Marinelli (“The Eight Mountains,” 2022) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (“Serenity,” 2005) also star.
“Trainwreck: The Cult of American Apparel” Step inside the stylish rise and dramatic fall of a fashion brand that defined the early 2000s. “Trainwreck: The Cult of American Apparel” premieres Tuesday, July 1, on Netflix, unraveling the story behind the clothes, the controversy and the ... cultlike following. The fourth installment in Netflix’s eight-part “Trainwreck” docuseries dives into the timeline of what made American Apparel a magnet for controversy. Known for its brightly colored basics, “Made in USA” ethos and provocative ad campaigns, American Apparel became a cultural force.
At the heart of the brand was founder and CEO Dov Charney, whose charisma drew in young people eager to be part of something revolutionary. But behind the glossy billboards, the brand’s polished image was beginning to crack as allegations of sexual misconduct, financial mismanagement and a toxic workplace turned the brand’s the dream job into a nightmare. Featuring candid interviews with insiders and former employees, this episode tells the story of how it all came undone. Directed by Sally Rose Griffiths (“Celebrity Island with Bear Grylls”) and executive produced by Sheun Adelasoye De Nicola (“Trainwreck: Mayor of Mayhem”), Alexander Marengo (“The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker,” 2023), Tim Wardle (“Three Identical Strangers,” 2018), Casey Feldman (“Trainwreck: Woodstock ‘99”), Erica Roberts (“#GiveASisterAHug”) and William Swann (“Trainwreck: Woodstock ‘99”).

Q: Is “The Legend of Bagger Vance” based on anything? I loved it, and there aren’t a lot of golf movies.
A: That’s a bigger question than you probably realize, but the short answer is yes, “The Legend of Bagger Vance” (2000) is in fact based on a novel by Steven Pressfield.
But it doesn’t stop there, because the novel has source material as well — it’s a loose retelling of the ancient Hindu religious text the Bhagavad Gita.
“In the Gita, the troubled warrior Arjuna receives instruction from Krishna, Supreme Lord of the Universe, who has assumed human form as Arjuna’s charioteer,” Pressfield explains. “Instead of a troubled warrior, it’s a troubled golf champion; instead of his charioteer, it’s his caddie Bagger Vance.”
That explanation comes from another book, “Gita on the Green: The Mystical Tradition Behind Bagger Vance,” in which academic Steven Rosen (with help from Pressfield himself) explains all the connections between the novel and the religious text.
But there’s a big clue right in the names: the golfer (played in the film by Matt Damon, fresh off his breakout role in 1997’s “Good Will Hunting”) is named Ranulph Junah, which is a play on the character Arjuna in the Gita. The caddie’s name, Bagger Vance (played by Will Smith, at the time still known as a TV star for “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”), is a reference to the Gita character. Unfortunately for you, what this all adds up to
is that Pressfield doesn’t have any other golf stories. His interest in the sport was more about using it to translate ancient life lessons to a more modern context.
Q: What is The Hoff up to nowadays?
A: Showbiz oddball David Hasselhoff (known to some as The Hoff), star of ‘80s action TV classic “Knight Rider,” is keeping busy just being David Hasselhoff — quite literally. Most of his work now is, in one way or another, playing off his fame.
For example, in 2022 he played himself in two episodes of the ABC sitcom “The Goldbergs.” That same year, he starred in the one-season action-comedy series “Ze Network,” again playing himself (credited as “The Hoff”). And in 2017 he, not surprisingly, played himself in the meta action-comedy “Killing Hasselhoff.”
These are all designed to blur the lines between reality and fiction, but in the meantime, he’s done a fair bit of more explicitly fact-based work — but it’s no less weird.
For example, he was a celebrity guest singer last year on “Mask Singer” — that’s not a typo, it was the Spanish version of “The Masked Singer” — and two years earlier he did the French ver-
sion of the series as well, because he’s an international sort of guy.
Speaking of his musical side, he’s also a globally beloved pop star who’s still releasing albums. His latest, an all-covers album called “Party Your Hasselhoff,” was released in 2021. Because he’s as much a European phenomenon as an American one, he was also recently the face of a major contest for European train-booking website Trainline.
