EFrom gilded to grunge Bel Air queen bee relocates to Seattle in ‘Elle’
veryone knows the feeling of being underestimated. Rated and ranked by superficial, unimaginative parameters and stamped insufficient. Exceeding expectations comes as second nature to one beloved character who is about to receive the prequel treatment with a brand-new streaming series on Prime Video. “Elle” premieres Wednesday, July 1, with all eight episodes of the comedy’s debut season available to stream on premiere day.
The new series expands the story of Elle Woods, whom we first met on-screen as an ambitious law school student on a journey of self-determination, portrayed by Reese Witherspoon (“The Morning Show”), in the 2001 blockbuster comedy “Legally Blonde.” This time, the titular Elle is portrayed by Lexi Minetree (“The Murdaugh Murders,” 2023), as a teen thriving in the glamorous world of 1995 Bel Air.
All that glitters is not gold, however, and Elle’s California dream is shattered the moment her parents, Eva (June Diane Raphael, “Grace and Frankie”) and Wyatt (Tom Everett Scott, “The Summer I Turned Pretty”), share some tough news with their daughter. A move from their elite, sun-soaked neighborhood is imminent as the family is about to start a new chapter in drizzly Seattle, where Wyatt will be joining a new practice.
So her head-to-toe pink ensembles and perfectly styled blonde locks make her stick out like a sore thumb in a sea of flannel, weathered denim and ironic dye jobs at her new high school. Elle Woods is nothing but resilient and will make the most of what appears on the surface to be a dismal trade for her former glitzy lifestyle. What, like it’s hard?
Per Prime Video, “We meet [Elle] in 1995 as a fish in the tumultuous waters of high school where she encounters tricky friendships, forbidden romance and questionable fashion choices.” She leans on her family — including Bruiser the chihuahua, of course — as she navigates this new transition and “with each challenge she faces, Elle grows closer to the Elle Woods we know and love today.”
“Elle” has already been renewed for a second season ahead of the series premiere. Also starring in “Elle” are Jacob Moskovitz (“Isle Child,” 2025), Gabrielle Policano (“Babygirl,” 2024), Chandler Kinney (“Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin”), Zac Looker (“A Kind of Spark”) and Amy Pietz (“Paradise”).
The recurring cast includes Jessica Belkin (“The Hunting Wives”), Danielle Chand (“Pride,” 2025), Matt Oberg (“Hacks”), Chloe Wepper (“Good Trouble”), Logan Shroyer (“This Is Us”), Sharon Taylor (“Family Law”), David Burtka
(“How I Met Your Mother”), Brad Harder (“Living With My Mother’s Killer,” 2024), Kayla Maisonet (“NCIS: Origins”), Lisa Yamada (“The Bold and the Beautiful”) and the late James Van Der Beek (“Overcompensating”) in his last on-screen role.
The official trailer for the upcoming series begins with the sweet, nostalgic sounds of “Perfect Day” by Hoku, a nod to the song that featured prominently in the 2001 film. Elle is in her element at a pool party in her honor before she receives the earth-shattering news about Seattle. Upon hearing that the Woods will be spending a couple years in a dreary city, Elle whines, “that’s my whole life.” Before long, though, she is putting her best foot forward — in some tasteful wedge sandals, obviously — and dodging skateboarders on the way into her first day at a new school.
Known for putting the “elle” in intellectual, Elle Woods was first brought to life in the 2001 novel “Legally Blonde” by author Amanda Brown. The book was the basis of the film of the same name, which spun off a sequel, 2003’s “Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde,” and a turn on Broadway with “Legally Blonde: The Musical” in 2007.
We know about Elle’s law school life and career on Capitol Hill, but we have only gotten glimpses of the bright, knowledgeable and enterprising young Elle until now. The self-assured beginnings of the person who remained true to herself, a perpetually kind glamor queen, while teaching the rest of her Harvard Law classmates not to judge a book by its cover in “Legally Blonde” are explored in “Elle.”
Witherspoon, who serves as an executive producer for “Elle,” talked to The Hollywood Reporter last January about reinvigorating one of her most iconic characters after being inspired by “Wednesday” on Netflix.
“I saw that Wednesday Addams show and I was like, ‘Oh, she was in high school.’ I loved it. I watched every episode. I thought it was amazing.” Witherspoon continued, “and I was like, ‘We should do Elle Woods in high school,’ because I wanted to see who she was before college, before law school. And I started having all these ideas and these amazing writers came up with a great pitch and now Amazon is making the show and it’s called ‘Elle.’”
The series was created by writer and producer Laura Kittrell (“Insecure”) and is coshowrun by Kittrell and Caroline Dries (“The Vampire Diaries”). Lauren Neustadter (“The Last Thing He Told Me”) and Marc Platt (“Wicked,” 2024) serve as executive producers alongside Witherspoon and Brown.
The first two episodes of “Elle” were directed by Jason Moore (“Sisters,” 2015), who also executive produces the comedy. Other directors for the series include Pete Chatmon (“Ghosts”), Sammi Cohen (“You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah,” 2023) and Stacie Passon (“Your Friends & Neighbors”).

Z is for ‘Zorro’ Dujardin leads French vigilante adaptation

Heroes are having a moment. In truth, heroes, as a concept, never left, but it does seem that in the past year or two, the hero’s journey has moved away from the blockbuster, Marvel-backed “super” variety and regained the gravitas of the classic everyman avenger. Yes, as consumers, we appear to be trading in our tech devices for common sense and swapping our batmobiles for good, old-fashioned horsepower.
So who, dare we ask, is the perfect hero for these uncertain times? Who could possibly be brave enough to look injustice in the eye and say, “Not today, my friend?” Who, indeed, but the masked vigilante known only as Zorro.
“Zorro,” an eight-episode series starring “The Artist’s” (2011) Jean Dujardin, premieres Tuesday, June 30, on Kino Lorber’s streaming service MHz Choice.
MHz Choice, the streaming service launched in 2015 by MHz Networks, was acquired by New York-based company Kino Lorber in 2022 and has since merged with First Look Media’s Topic platform to become North America’s leading streaming service for international film and television. Home to more than 5,000 titles, including hit series “Babylon Berlin” (from Germany), “The Killing” (from Denmark) and “The Bridge” (from Sweden), the newest project to join the library is France’s first foray into the Californian crusader created by Johnston McCulley in 1919.
The fictional character of Zorro has been captured on paper and screen more than 50 times in the 107 years since his inception, including more than 10 series and 40 feature films from the U.S., Mexico, Turkey and throughout Europe. Now, however, is France’s turn to take a crack at the iconic hero, and Dujardin shines as a reluctant post-retirement crime punisher with a French socialist bent.
“Set in 1821 against the backdrop of a rapidly changing Los Angeles, Don Diego de la Vega (Dujardin) unexpectedly inherits the role of mayor following his father’s [André Dussollier, ‘Amelie,’ 2001] death, only to discover a city drowning in debt and under the grip of the powerful Don Emmanuel [Eric Elmosnino, ‘Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life,’ 2010],” reads the description per IGN.com. “Determined to restore order and bring vital water access to the struggling community, Diego quickly realizes that politics alone cannot combat the corruption, exploitation and growing unrest surrounding him. Diego secretly revives his longabandoned alter ego for the first time in 20 years, becoming the masked vigilante Zorro as he fights for the people while publicly trying to govern the city as its conflicted mayor.
“As Diego struggles to balance civic leadership with his dangerous double life,” the synopsis
continues, “the lines between the man and the myth begin to blur in increasingly complicated ways. Zorro unexpectedly becomes a celebrated folk hero across Los Angeles, as the city’s citizens rally behind the masked avenger more enthusiastically than its own government. At the same time, Diego’s personal life spirals into emotional chaos as his wife, Gabriella [Audrey Dana, ‘Roman de Gare,’ 2007], becomes drawn to the mystery and passion surrounding Zorro, unaware that the masked figure and her husband are the same man.”
The evolution of these plot points lend itself well to Dujardin’s acute sense of comedic timing, which is well known to French audiences thanks in large part to the popularity of his 2005 teen surf comedy “Brice de Nice.” The actor also crossed over to the North American market with the 2011 release of the Oscar-winning silent film “The Artist,” for which Dujardin won Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role, his only Academy Award to date.
Additional comedy within the eight-episode series is provided by Salvatore Ficarra (“Sicilia Express”), who portrays Don Diego’s mute assistant, Bernardo. Keenly aware of his boss’s longtime alter ego from early on in the pilot (and presumably long before the series began), Bernardo expertly uses exaggerated expressions and movement to converse with Don Diego, thus infusing the series with some uniquely French Marcel Marceau-style pantomime amid action and dialogue.
Shot entirely in Spain, the French-language series was created by Benjamin Charbit (“The Beast,” 2023) and Noe Debre (“Stillwater,” 2021) for the French regional iteration of Paramount+, where it premiered in September 2024. Shortly thereafter, in December 2024, “Zorro” aired in Belgium before finding a home on RTLTVI and France 2 a couple weeks later. And although this adaptation marks the first official French production of “Zorro” (co-produced with Belgium and the United States), late French actor Alain Delon (“Le Samourai,” 1967) previously portrayed McCulley’s hero in a 1975 Italian film, also simply titled “Zorro.”

Guy Fieri (“Diners, Drive-ins and Dives”) makes the move from television to ‘tube, as he invites celebrities, influencers and fellow foodies to take part in open conversations, in “Guy’s Feast Club” — a brand-new series from the culinary mastermind, now streaming on YouTube.
“From local joints to homecooked spreads, Fieri caters to his guests’ cravings by connecting over what he knows best — food,” the series’ description explains. “In each episode, off-the-hook dishes lead to in-depth conversations that are fueled by flavor, fun and even a little competition. When hunger calls, Guy answers, so pull up a chair and get ready to feast!”
In this first season, Fieri serves up four fascinating episodes, in which he hosts friends such as “Bad Friends” podcast hosts Bobby Lee and Andrew Santino, comedian Bert Kreischer (“Free Bert”), pro skater Tony Hawk and YouTube-famous basketball creator Jesser (@Jesser), who appears in the series’ premiere episode.
According to Food Network, this first episode sees Fieri “[bringing] Jesser to his Feast Club for a hearty serving of his all-time favorite ribs while Jesser breaks down his wild journey from high school dropout to judging the NBA Dunk Contest.”
“Things get heated,” the network promises, “when the two battle it out in a brutal five-level spicy wings challenge.”
As Fieri explains: “‘Guy’s Feast Club’ is all about bringing out-of-bounds bites and real deal dialogue to the table in a way we’ve never done before. I’m stoked to bring these next-level conversations and big eating energy with some big names you’re gonna love.”
“And remember,” he teases, “the first rule of Feast Club is ‘Do talk with your mouth full!’”

A new episode of the South Korean medical romance “Doctor on the Edge” arrives Monday, June 29, on Disney+. As they grow closer, the rock ‘n’ roll superstar becomes someone entirely unexpected in private moments: a first love, an antidote to her loneliness and a vulnerable confidant. From her hair and makeup to experimenting with drugs, Priscilla’s life changes drastically — and she along with it — in her eagerness to stay with him; the film chronicles their bittersweet and often tumultuous relationship over the years. Q: I just saw a really weird movie about Dracula, but it was set in France instead of England (or Transylvania, I guess). It seemed big-budget, but I never saw it in theaters, and it maybe seemed foreign, but the dialogue was mostly in English. What did I just watch?
A: You’re doing an excellent job of capturing the Luc Besson (“The Fifth Element,” 1997) experience.
Besson is a French filmmaker who specializes in making movies for international audiences. Watching one can feel a bit bewildering.
For the most part they’re made in English, but sometimes there are extensive parts in other languages as well, sometimes many (so everyone’s going to have to read some subtitles). And he always manages to sneak in something that’s very obviously French.
The result is that everything feels familiar, but also a little different. Or, from another perspective (certainly from the business perspective) every audience feels like the movie might have been made for them.
Such is the case with “Dracula” (2025), Besson’s take on the most famous horror story of all time.
It starred two Americans — Caleb Landry Jones (“X-Men: First Class,” 2011) and Zoe Bleu (“Gonzo Girl,” 2023) — and one very famous Austrian-German — Oscar winner Christoph Waltz (“Django Unchained,” 2012) — and was filmed in Finland and France.
It did get a theatrical release, but not a very wide one, and it got very little marketing. However, it seems to be doing better on streaming — it was, for example, the most-streamed movie on Apple TV when it was released in March.
But in an interview with fan site HorrorGeekLife.com, Besson cautioned against overthinking the business stuff. “You’re going to show the movie to a 60-year-old woman in Arizona and a 15-year-old girl in Korea, you don’t know, and don’t think about it. Offer your movie to people and hope they will like it, and really, that’s it.”
Q: Is Graham Yost going to make more “Justified”?
A: There was a long break between “Justified” (which ran from 2010 to 2015 on FX) and its sequel series, “Justified: City Primeval” (which ran
just one season in 2023). So, fans may always hope for more. But at the moment, creator and writer Graham Yost (“The Pacific”) has traded (neo-)cowboys for spies.
In fact, Yost had already moved in that direction before “City Primeval” even aired, with his smash-hit spy show “Slow Horses” debuting in 2022 on Apple TV.
But we can now say that he’s made a proper turn toward espionage storytelling with the announcement of his new show, the muchdiscussed “Legacy of Spies,” due out sometime in the next year on MGM+.
“Legacy” is a series adaptation of multiple novels by spy-story great John le Carre, with the first season covering the events of “The Spy Who Came in From the Cold.” But more than one of le Carre’s follow-up books dealt with the aftermath of that one — including the book “Legacy of Spies,” published in 2017 — so the series has lots of content to run with.
But note that Yost is only serving as executive producer of “Slow Horses” and “Legacy of Spies,” not writer or showrunner, so it takes up less of his time than “Justified” did. That’s how he can juggle both spy shows at the same time, as well as another ongoing series, “Silo,” his foray into yet another genre: sci-fi.
“Silo” is just now entering its third season on Apple TV, and Yost is the head writer of this one. So if you’re missing his voice, that might be worth checking out.
Q: I was sorry to see “Firefly Lane” get canceled. What’s Katherine Heigl doing now?
A: At the moment she’s stepped away from acting to pursue her other two passions: art and charity (plus a third passion: Utah).
In the years since “Firefly Lane’s” 2023 finale, Heigl (“Grey’s Anatomy”) has held two exhibitions of her mixed-media artwork, all inspired by the majestic Utah landscapes she calls home. Both exhibitions were held in Park City, Utah (also the site of the Sundance Film Festival), and both were fundraisers for the Jason Heigl Foundation, the charity she co-founded to support animal welfare.
She also gave her voice to a promotional video in 2024 to support Salt Lake City’s bid to host the 2034 Winter Olympics.
After a hugely successful run on TV and in romcom cinema — her late ‘00s trio of 2007’s “Knocked Up,” 2008’s “27 Dresses” and 2009’s “The Ugly Truth” grossed more than half a billion dollars at the box office — Heigl could never act again and still be remembered as one of the greats. But hopefully for fans like yourself, she’ll return to her acting passion again (anyone with a spec script about rescuing and/or painting the Rocky Mountain elk, Utah’s state animal, might want to give her agent a call).
