Jensen Ackles (“Supernatural”) stars as rogue L.A. detective Mark Meachum in “Countdown,” premiering Wednesday, June 25, on Prime Video. Assigned to a task force designed to stop a potentially devastating terror attack in the City of Angels, Meachum must learn to work as a part of a team as he also navigates a budding romance on the horizon. Jessica Camacho (“All Rise”), Uli Latukefu (“Young Rock”) and Eric Dane (“Grey’s Anatomy”) also star. Your

he countdown is on for the next actionpacked, adrenaline-pumping thrill ride on Prime Video. Premiering Wednesday, June 25, on the streamer, “Countdown” stars “Supernatural’s” Jensen Ackles and “All Rise’s” Jessica Camacho as high-operating police officers assigned a deadly task that could save millions of innocent lives.

Helmed by Derek Haas, the creator behind hit shows such as “Chicago P.D” and “FBI: International,” as well as the action films “Wanted” (2008) and “The Double” (2011), the flagship season of “Countdown” is a 13-episode thrill ride that brings viewers into the heart of the danger while smoothing the tension with a healthy dose of comedy — something fans of the 15-season CW series “Supernatural” are well acquainted with.

Likewise, those who have dabbled in Haas’s other work will already know that he is no stranger to comedy-punctuated action himself, as he often leans toward gritty heroes who love their jobs — danger and all.

“I grew up loving action movies like ‘Die Hard,’ ‘Lethal Weapon,’ ‘Rush Hour’ and ‘Beverly Hills Cop,’” Haas told Men’s Health magazine during a first-look exclusive interview, adding, “so those wild character-based, set piece-based action thrillers are always in the back of my mind. I like it when the heroes have a bounce in their step and love their jobs, versus the depressed, I‘m-haunted-by-what-I’ve-seen type of characters.”

And Ackles’ character, Mark Meachum, certainly falls into that character category.

Described by Ackles himself as a “rogue L.A. detective, wrong-side-of-the-tracks kind of guy [who] takes risks that most people wouldn’t take,” the trailer shows that Meachum is recruited alongside other edgy and top-performing law enforcement officers to end an imminent terrorist plot that could wipe out a large portion of the city of Los Angeles. Referred to in the trailer as a “Chernobyl-level event” and “another 9-11,” the endgame plan sees many false starts throughout its 13 episodes. The question remains, however: will the team of superstar agents be enough to stop a well-designed attack on one of the U.S.’s largest cities?

Joining Meachum in a string of metropolitan heroics are Amber Oliveras, a female agent toughened by years of having to prove herself on the force, played by “All Rise” and “Taken” star Jessica Camacho; Keyonte Bell, played by “The Boys’” and “Animal Kingdom’s” Elliot Knight; Evan Shepherd, portrayed by Violett Beane of “The Flash” and Christopher Landon’s 2025 horror thriller “Drop”; Lucas Finau, played by “Young Rock’s” Uli Latukefu; and Nathan Blythe, the

leading officer who recruited the other agents based on their track record, portrayed by “Grey’s Anatomy’s” so-called “McSteamy,” Eric Dane.

According to Men’s Health magazine, whose online writing team got first access to details about the series, “Countdown” tells the story of the six “undercover agents from across various branches of United States law enforcement” who have “been assembled to investigate the mysterious case of an officer with the Department of Homeland Security who was murdered in broad daylight without any suspects or leads. As they hunt for the killer, they begin to unravel a larger plot that could end with not only one dead victim — but millions of them.”

The idea for a task force-based series reportedly came to Haas while he was working on another hit series, “Chicago P.D.” Per Entertainment Weekly, it was the arc of “Chicago P.D.” character Erin Lindsay (Sophia Bush, “One Tree Hill”) that kickstarted Haas’ fascination with task forces — namely their creation and structure.

“I found out it’s kind of like an all-star team

and it’s got people from a bunch of different agencies,” Haas said of the task force concept in an interview shared by Entertainment Weekly.

“So you got DEA or NSA — or you could have somebody from the coast guard, secret service, detectives from local police departments, feds — and they’re on a particular mission.”

In the same interview, Haas shares that the dynamic between the agents is really what drives “Countdown” and sets it apart from other procedural action series.

“Putting this disparate group together and then emphasizing different strengths is what makes the show,” says Haas. “And watching as they come together as a team, I think that’s what the viewers are going to find really interesting.”

Of course, with Ackles as series star, there is a healthy dose of comedy and sarcasm peppered into the action. Word has it there is likely to be a romantic component or two as well, although the details on that particular aspect of the plot have yet to be shared in any meaningful way. That said, based on Haas’s cheeky declaration

that “the triangle” is his “favorite shape” (reported by Entertainment Weekly), it seems likely that viewers are in for some will-they-or-won’tthey tension and a bit of romantic complication within the task force.

Written and showrun by Haas, series direction for “Countdown” is provided by Jonathan Brown (“FBI: International”), Lisa Robinson (“New Amsterdam”), Avi Youabian (“All American”), Rashidi Natara Harper (“Hip Hop Uncovered”), Nina Lopez-Corrado (“Perry Mason”), Tess Malone (“Law & Order: Organized Crime”) and Eric Stoltz (“Madam Secretary”).

Don’t miss the mark — “Countdown” premieres Wednesday, June 25, on Prime Video.

New money talks

The Russells make moves in new season of ‘The Gilded Age’

In the culture of excess that defined 1880s New York high society, marriages among the wealthy were business decisions of as much importance as those made in any industrialist’s office.

“The Gilded Age” returns for its third season, premiering Sunday, June 22, on HBO and streaming on HBO Max. In the upcoming season, love is in the air, or at least the Russells’ matchmaking schemes are floating around 61st Street, and families are finding fault with suitors all over the city.

“Happiness is a byproduct of a well-ordered life,” Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon, “The White Lotus”) opines over the official trailer for the new season. “Marriage is a real opportunity. You can influence politics, shape events. You can have powerful, interesting lives,” the new money queen of the Upper East Side says from experience.

Last season, after her relationship with publisher T. Thomas Fortune (Sullivan Jones, “Elsbeth”) became devastatingly complicated and her controversial article helped halt the educational board’s quiet closure of Black schools, Peggy Scott (Denée Benton, “UnREAL”) made the emotional decision to part ways with The Globe. With those challenges behind her, Peggy is about to jump into a new dilemma. This season, Dr. William Kirkland (Jordan Donica, “Charmed”), a handsome Newport doctor, comes into Peggy’s life and sweeps her off her feet. It’s not as simple as just falling in love, however, as the doctor comes with his own set of disapproving family members ready to take aim at Peggy’s ambition.

Following a devastating loss in the battle of the operas and a long-running feud with the new money across the street, Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski, “Nine Perfect Strangers”) faces conflict even closer to home this season — from inside the house, to be exact. Threatened with financial ruin from a woeful decision her son, Oscar (Blake Ritson, “The Crown”), made, Agnes prepared for the worst last season until a hidden letter changed everything.

There is a new lady of the van Rhjin house. Ada Forte (Cynthia Nixon, “And Just Like That...”), Agnes’ sister, discovered that her recently deceased husband had left her complete control of his untouched inherited fortune, allowing the widowed sisters to keep their home with their niece Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson, “Materialists,” 2025). Though everyone technically answers to Ada now, that doesn’t mean that Agnes has to accept it.

Meanwhile, the Russell children, Larry (Harry Richardson, “Poldark”) and Gladys (Taissa Farmiga, “American Horror Story”), are well aware of their mother’s plans for them. However, they may

have romantic ideas of their own.

Larry recently got into the clock business with a member of a rival house’s staff, Jack Treacher (Ben Ahlers, “The Last of Us”), at the end of last season, taking a small step away from his railway tycoon father George Russell’s (Morgan Spector, “The Plot Against America”) overbearing influence on his career. It was just one small step away from the Russell residence and toward the van Rhijn’s across the street that Larry made in last season’s finale.

Marian has come a long way since she first arrived in New York from Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Sent to live with her aunts after her father’s death, Marian’s modern approach to life has ruffled feathers in their social circle, no one more so than Agnes.

Leaving an appropriate match and the promise of an easy life of luxury on the table, Marian chose instead to pursue her passion for teaching before settling down. Unattached, Marian sees her friend Larry in a different light on her front steps after the Met’s inaugural opera, and the two share a kiss, either uniting the two warring households or fanning the flames.

Gladys, naive and not exactly poised to stand up against her mother’s wishes, ended last season engaged to a Duke as part of Bertha’s strategy to secure an audience for the Met’s opening night. The teaser trailer features Gladys looking worried in several locales, perhaps feeling like her time is nearly up to object to her mother’s wishes.

Also returning to the cast are Audra McDonald (“The Good Fight”) as Dorothy Scott; John Douglas Thompson (“Mare of Easttown”) as Arthur Scott; Nathan Lane (“Mid-Century Modern”) as Ward McAllister; Jack Gilpin (Billions”) as Church; Simon Jones (“Downton Abbey,” 2019) as Bannister; Debra Monk (“New Amsterdam”) as Armstrong; and Taylor Richardson (“The Time Traveler’s Wife”) as Bridget.

With a wealth of knowledge and years of experience — both professional and homegrown — to share, chef Maneet Chauhan (“Chopped”) brings traditional Indian flavors to the masses with each and every episode of “Maneet’s Eats,” available to stream on Prime Video.

Following Chauhan from the market to her kitchen, this mouth-watering series sees the chef recreating some of her all-time favorite Indian dishes in an approachable way, allowing newcomers and spice lovers alike to try their hand at making the recipes right at home.

“Seemingly born with a ladle in her hand” (per Food

Network), Chauhan’s culinary journey started early in her life, in her homeland of India. There, Chauhan graduated top of her class at the Welcomgroup Graduate School of Hotel Administration — one of India’s top culinary schools — before interning at some of the finest hotels and kitchens the country had to offer. After moving to the U.S., Chauhan went on to attend the Culinary

Institute of America, where she honed her skill enough to later appear on the likes of Food Network series such as “Chopped,” “Guy’s Grocery Games” and “The Next Iron Chef.” Additionally, Chauhan also owns the Chauhan Ale and Masala House, a restaurant offering a bold fusion of cultures, cuisines and flavors, located in Nashville, Tennessee.

WHAT’S NEW ON HULU

“The Bear” - Season 4

The kitchen is heating up once again as “The Bear” returns to Hulu for its fourth season, with all 10 episodes hitting the streamer Wednesday, June 25. After opening their fine-dining restaurant, The Bear, Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White, “Shameless”) and his crew are back in the kitchen and are under even more pressure. Season 4 picks up right after Season 3’s cliffhanger when Carmy received The Bear’s first review. Season 4 follows Carmy as he doubles down on his obsessive pursuit of culinary greatness, alienating his team as The Bear chases a Michelin star. Meanwhile, Sydney (Ayo Edebiri, “Inside Out 2,” 2024) grapples with a tempting new opportunity that could take her away from the restaurant, and Richie (Ebon MossBachrach, “Girls”) is forced to choose between loyalty and ambition. Returning cast members include Lionel Boyce (“The Jellies!”), Liza Colon-Zayas (“Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”) and Abby Elliott (“Saturday Night Live”). Created by Christopher Storer (“Ramy”), who also serves as writer and director. Executive produced by Joanna Calo (“BoJack Horseman”), Hiro Murai (“Atlanta”) and Josh Senior (“Ramy Youssef: More Feelings,” 2024).

A brilliant new hero steps into the spotlight when “Ironheart” premieres Tuesday, June 24, on Disney+. Set in the aftermath of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (2022), this series follows Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” 2022), a young inventor who is determined to make her mark on the world. Inspired by Tony Stark, she builds her own powerful iron suit

… but her invention attracts the wrong attention. WHAT’S NEW ON NETFLIX

“Squid Game” - Season 3

Every game must come to an end, but Season 3 of “Squid Game” is just getting started. Coming Friday, June 27, to Netflix, the final season plunges Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae, “Hunt,” 2022) back into the nightmare he once tried to escape. But this

time, he’s on a mission to tear down the system from within. Season 2 ended in tragedy, as Gi-hun’s failed rebellion against the game’s organizers led to the death of his friend Jung-bae (Aaron Yamawaki, “Avengers: Age the Ultron,” 2015), leaving him with guilt and a need for justice. Now, as he reunites with other survivors, the games become even more twisted, with brutal new challenges introduced by the enigmatic dolls. Meanwhile, The Front Man (Lee Byung-hun, “The Magnificent Seven,” 2016) continues to oversee the games and detective Hwang Jun-ho’s (Wi Ha-joon, “Bad and Crazy”) investigation brings him closer to uncovering the truth. Showrunner and executive producer Hwang Dong-hyuk (“Silenced,” 2011) returns as director for the final season.

WHAT’S NEW ON HBO MAX

“Enigma” (2025)

A powerful reflection on identity, reinvention and the price of fame, “Enigma” premieres Tuesday, June 24, on HBO Max. Directed by Emmy-nominated filmmaker Zackary Drucker (“Transparent”), “Enigma” is an emotional documentary that explores the lives of two groundbreaking trans figures: April Ashley, a British model who once graced the cover of Vogue, and Amanda Lear (“Miss,” 2020), the French singer and actress known for her playful

persona on stage. Born into eras defined by secrecy and social suppression, both women forged bold new identities in the public eye, but in strikingly different ways. The documentary traces Ashley’s historic journey as one of the first British people to undergo gender confirmation surgery, only to later be outed by the press. As the world shined an unwanted spotlight on her identity, she eventually reclaimed her narrative through activism and her autobiography. In contrast, Lear built her career on gender-bending allure, teasing audiences with her hit “I’m a MISTERy,” a title deliberately misspelled to heighten the speculation she wouldn’t confirm or deny. “Enigma” juxtaposes their paths to showcase how both women dealt with the personal cost of living authentically in the spotlight. Executive produced by Nancy Abraham (“The Janes,” 2022), Jon Bardin (“Take Care of Maya,” 2023) and Kate Barry (“Britney vs Spears,” 2021).

From the mind of acclaimed crime novelist Dennis Lehane (“Mystic River,” 2001) and inspired by true events, “Smoke” is a searing nine-episode thriller starring Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine (“Dexter: Resurrection”) as Freddy, Hannah Emily Anderson (“Dark Phoenix,” 2019) as Ashley, Luke Roessler (“Deadpool 2,” 2018) as Emmett, Mishka Thebaud (“The Good Doctor”) as Benji and Adina Porter (“American Horror Story”) as Brenda. Q: I was just rewatching an old episode of “Great British Bake Off,” only they called it “The Great British Baking Show.” Did they change the name or something? I swear it used to be “Bake Off.”

A: You’re not wrong. It just depends where you’re watching it.

If you’re watching in Great Britain, where it’s made, it’s still “Great British Bake Off.” But if you’re watching in North America, under the watchful blue eyes of the Pillsbury Doughboy, you’re getting “The Great British Baking Show.”

That’s because Pillsbury, a beloved and wellestablished food company in North America, has a trademark on the term “bake off,” thanks to its long-running Pillsbury Bake-Off competition, which challenges home bakers to send in their best recipes to compete for a prize (so, not miles away from the “Great British” show).

To avoid the clash, the show rebranded as “The Great British Baking Show” over here, but otherwise it’s the same.

It’s managed plenty of other, more significant changes over the years (a new judge, a U.K. network change and a revolving door of comedian-hosts, for example), so it knows what it’s doing.

It remains popular in North America, even alongside regionally tailored versions — “The Great American Baking Show” airs on the Roku channel and “The Great Canadian Baking Show” has aired on CBC since 2017.

Q: I have gotten really into “The Lincoln Lawyer” and noticed David E. Kelley’s name in the credits. Assuming it’s the same David E. Kelley from “Ally McBeal” and “Boston Legal,” I’m curious if he’s done anything other than legal shows.

A: You could look to his even more recent streaming drama, “Nine Perfect Strangers,” as an example of the non-legal output from super-producer David E. Kelley.

Yes, he’s definitely known for his legal dramas (other examples include the beloved but shortlived “Harry’s Law” and legal-TV landmark “L.A. Law”). But he’s always kept a hand in other genres, with almost the same amount of success. Today is a great example. At the same time he’s producing Netflix’s “The Lincoln Lawyer,” a legal drama based on the film of the same name, he’s also producing Hulu’s buzzy hit “Nine Perfect Strangers,” an anthology series about rich people visiting a mysterious wellness retreat. Its second season just debuted a few weeks ago. This pattern goes all the way back to his early career. While he was writing and producing “L.A. Law,” and maybe creating the modern court-

room drama as we know it, from 1986 to 1992, he was also writing and producing “Doogie Howser, M.D.” (which ran from 1989 to 1993). While “Doogie” maybe didn’t redefine the medical genre, it at least offered a surprising new take on it and launched the career of Neil Patrick Harris (“How I Met Your Mother”).

Kelley has been even more adventurous on the big screen, dabbling in genres like horror (“Lake Placid,” 1999) and sports comedy (“Mystery, Alaska,” also released in 1999).
