Broadway will have many shows and performers to celebrate as The Broadway League and The American Theatre Wing present the 78th Annual Tony Awards at New York’s iconic Radio City Music Hall on Sunday, June 8. CBS and Paramount+ will show the event, hosted by Tony winner Cynthia Erivo and featuring three productions in the lead with 10 nominations each: “Buena Vista Social Club,” “Death Becomes Her” and “Maybe Happy Ending.”

Whatever challenges might come its way, the New York theater community manages to meet them and put on really big shows, as the continuation of the Tony Awards affirms.
The 78th edition of Broadway’s annual event, presented by The Broadway League and The American Theatre Wing, will be staged Sunday, June 8, at New York’s iconic Radio City Music Hall. Again this year, CBS and Paramount+ carry the ceremony, to be marked as usual by performances of numbers from nominated musicals, and appearances by many stars of screen and theater as presenters. Three shows lead with 10 nominations each: “Buena Vista Social Club,” “Death Becomes Her” and “Maybe Happy Ending.”
This time, the Tonys get a first-time host who’s no stranger to the ceremony: Cynthia Erivo, who won her own Tony Award in 2016 for the musical version of “The Color Purple,” and she was nominated again in 2023 for the play “Fat Ham.” Erivo also has a Grammy Award and a Daytime Emmy Award from her participation in “The Color Purple,” and she was recently back on the award trail in a major way, with many nominations — including one for an Oscar — for her portrayal of Elphaba in the first movie to come from the musical “Wicked” (the second film will be released this coming holiday season).
Among the nominees are performers well known for their television or movie work (or both), such as George Clooney (“Good Night, and Good Luck”), Mia Farrow (“The Roommate”), Audra McDonald (“Gypsy” now makes her the most-nominated performer in Tony history with 11 bids, six of which she has won), Sarah Snook (“The Picture of Dorian Gray”), Daniel Dae Kim (“Yellow Face”), Nicole Scherzinger (“Sunset Blvd.”), Sadie Sink (“John Proctor is the Villain”), Megan Hilty (“Death Becomes Her”), Darren Criss (“Maybe Happy Ending”), Harry Lennix (“Purpose”), Jeremy Jordan (“Floyd Collins”), Bob Odenkirk (“Glengarry Glen Ross”) and Justina Machado (“Real Women Have Curves: The Musical”).
A special Tony Award for lifetime achievement will go to Harvey Fierstein, the Broadway veteran who has made enduring marks as both a performer and a writer. He won competitive Tonys for both pursuits for “Torch Song Trilogy” in 1983, later earning two more of the honors for “La Cage aux Folles” (1984, for writing) and “Hairspray” (2003, for acting). “Kinky Boots,” “Newsies” and “A Catered Affair” are also among his stage writing credits, and he revised the book of “Funny Girl” for productions of that musical in recent years.
Time for the Tonys Broadway honors more of its best
Special Tony honors will also be given to the performing arts-centric PBS series “Great Performances,” The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, former Goodspeed Musicals executive director Michael Price and the nonprofit New York theater-transforming organization New 42 (named for the city’s 42nd Street, where the effort is centered). Actor-singer Celia Keenan-Bolger (“The Visit,” 2015) will receive the Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award for her arts-related advocacy work.

Moore, Sweeney explore troubled kinship in new Apple drama
By Dana Simpson TV Media
Each relationship comes with its own particularities and complications, but few have been as elusively captured on screen as the complicated bond between a mother and her adult daughter. From jealousy to pride and protectiveness, a mother’s traumas and triumphs are often echoed in her daughter as she herself grows into her womanhood.
These are the themes tackled in “Echo Valley,” the new drama from “Encounter” (2021) director Michael Pearce, premiering Friday, June 13, on Apple TV+.
The film, which stars Academy Award winner Julianne Moore (“Still Alice,” 2014) as coping mother and horse trainer Kate Garrett, begins when her adult daughter Claire, played by twotime Primetime Emmy nominated actress Sydney Sweeney (“The White Lotus”), arrives on the doorstep of her secluded home soaked in someone else’s blood. Terrified and seeking her mother’s help, Claire’s arrival forces Kate to step away from her own all-consuming tragedy and focus on keeping her daughter safe against all odds.
“These are my favorite kinds of movies: movies about relationships,” Moore said of “Echo Valley” in an interview with Vanity Fair writer Rebecca Ford. “What will people do for one another? What kind of decisions do you make? How far will you go?”
And while many would assume that a mother would do just about anything to protect her child, the messier the relationship, the more one begins to question the extent to which one should become involved.
Penned by Emmy-nominated “Mare of Easttown” writer Brad Ingelsby, “Echo Valley” is equal parts drama and thriller, taking elements from true crime and fiction alike to create a rich tapestry between the two women. When we learn early on that Claire is an addict who has previously preyed upon her mother’s love and goodwill, audiences begin to get a clearer picture of the complex dynamic between the two women.
“I’ve had a lot of family members deal with addiction and then struggle with similar issues as Claire and her friends,” Sweeney shared with Vanity Fair during press time. “I’ve kind of had firsthand experience with it. ... But when there was love in the air in the room, you truly still felt it. The person that they are at the core, as buried as they might be, is still there.”
For what it’s worth, this kind of high-emotion thriller is hardly a new venture for director Pearce, who explored themes of parenthood and family through his shorts “Madrugada” (2008) and “Rite” (2010) before branching out into feature films such as the 2017 family drama “Beast” and Prime Video’s Riz Ahmed (“Sound of Metal,”
2019) and Octavia Spencer (“Hidden Figures,” 2016) sci-fi flick “Encounter,” which centers on a pair of young brothers (Lucian-River Chauhan, “Me” and new talent Aditya Geddada) relying on their father (Ahmed) for protection during an alien invasion near their home.
But as much of Pearce’s DNA is in “Echo Valley,” the director admits that Ingelsby’s script is what helped him set the project off in the right direction.
“Usually I read either a script which has great characters but they’re in need of a really compelling story, or I read very genre-driven material but the characters feel like archetypes and they’re not really developed,” said Pearce, as reported by Vanity Fair.
“When I read Brad’s script,” he continued, “it was in the [bullseye] where I got everything that I wanted. It had these rich and textured characters, and it felt like it was a film for grown-ups.”
In addition to the hugely successful “Mare of Easttown” on HBO, Ingelsby’s screenwriting credits include 2013’s Christian Bale (“American Psycho,” 2000) crime thriller “Out of the Furnace,” the 2015 action film “Run All Night” starring Liam Neeson (“Taken,” 2008) and the 2020 Ben Affleck (“Gone Girl,” 2014) sports drama “The Way Back.” Per TheWrap.com, Ingelsby is currently working on a series called “Task” for HBO. Due to premiere in September, “Task” follows an FBI team in charge of investigating a string of robberies in suburban Philadelphia — a familiar setting for fans of “Mare of Easttown” — and stars Mark Ruffalo (“The Avengers,” 2012) and Tom Pelphrey (“Mank,” 2020).
Although Moore and Sweeney carry the bulk of Pearce and Ingelsby’s final product on their own highly capable shoulders, many other wellknown and beloved actors appear in supporting roles and brief appearances.

“Resident Alien” - Season 4
After coming to Earth to destroy humanity, Harry (Alan Tudyk, “Firefly”) returns in “Resident Alien” with a new mission: saving it. Premiering Friday, June 13, on Peacock, the latest season picks up after a dramatic Season 3 finale, which saw the real Harry and his alien offspring, Bridget (Andrea Geones, “A Trip Elsewhere,” 2024) imprisoned on the Moon by the Greys. Now, a shape-shifting alien known as Mantid (Clancy Brown, “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” 2010) has assumed Harry’s human identity on Earth, causing chaos in their small town. As Harry makes an escape and returns to Earth, he must stop Mantid and protect the human race from destruction. Meanwhile, Sheriff Mike (Corey Reynolds, “Hairspray,” 2007) and Deputy Liv
(Elizabeth Bowen, “Upload”) investigate a series of mysterious deaths that suggest a non-human culprit. As the investigation unfolds, Asta (Sara Tomko, “Once Upon a Time”) and D’Arcy (Alice Wetterlund, “People of Earth”) struggle to keep secrets from Ben (Levi Fiehler, “The Fosters”) and Kate (Meredith Garretson, “The Offer”), who grow increasingly suspicious of the town’s strange happenings. Based on the “Resident Alien” comic by Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse, Season 4 is directed Robert Duncan McNeill (“Chuck”), with Justin Falvey (“The Americans”) and Darryl Frank (“Halo”) returning as executive producers.

The arrival of Greta Nelso (Carrie-Anne Moss, “The Matrix,” 1999), who is an ex-German spy and Luke’s former flame, upends the Brunners’ already fragile relationship. Q: What’s Cecily Strong been doing since she left “Saturday Night Live”?
A: As is so often the case with the show’s most beloved stars, the answer is partly just more “Saturday Night Live,” but that’s not all.
Strong left “SNL” midway through Season 48, in late 2022. She holds the record as the longest-serving female cast member on the show, having started in 2012.
She had a soft landing, though, because at that point she was already starring in the oddball musical comedy “Schmigadoon!” on Apple TV+, which she continued to do until its cancelation a year later.
She’s also started getting into the bigname-voice-actor game, with roles in the
family-friendly hits “Leo” (2023) and “The Garfield Movie” (2024).
But some of her highest-profile post-“SNL” work has been the many times she popped back in on “SNL.” Most recently, she reprised her impression of Fox News personality, and now political figure, Jeanine Pirro.
As a good New Yorker, she’s also been doing theater, such as the off-Broadway play “Brooklyn Laundry” that staged last year.
In between all this, she’s also been building her family. She and her fiancé had their first baby — a girl — just a few months ago.
Q: Why haven’t I seen Ed O’Neill in anything since “Modern Family”?
A: Ed O’Neill, who played patriarch Jay Pritchett on all 11 seasons of the hit sitcom “Modern Family,” is at the point in his career when he can be choosy. He’s also at the point in his life — he’s 79 years old — when you don’t need to be working all the time.
He’s taken exactly one part since “Modern Family” ended in 2020 — a leading role in the
fact-based sports miniseries “Clipped” in 2024. It’s a far cry from his sitcom work. “Clipped” is a rather heavy drama, and O’Neill plays a pretty unlikable guy.
“I think I wanted to challenge myself,” he said in an interview on the sports talk radio show “The Rich Eisen Show.” “I think sometimes, certain roles, you don’t really use a whole lot of your engine, it’s more or less 70%. I thought, ‘This one is going to a 100, all the way through.’”
That might seem like a jab at the kind of work he made his name with, but it’s worth noting that the other high-profile project O‘Neill’s been associated with lately is a reboot of the show that started it all for him, “Married ... With Children.”
It was announced a couple of years ago that Sony would do an animated reboot of the landmark ‘90s sitcom, with the original cast members (including O’Neill) voicing their characters. It got a lot of press for a while, through to last summer, but not much has been heard of the project since. He’s also been attached to a documentary about the Gracie family of martial artists (O’Neill is an avid practitioner of Brazilian jiu-jitsu) and has at least a small role in the upcoming Hulu legal drama series “All’s Fair.”
