If you can’t do, teach, right?
A washed-up former pro golfer sees the light when he discovers a young talent and turns to coaching in the new streaming sitcom “Stick,” premiering Wednesday, June 4, on Apple TV+. Three episodes drop on premiere day, with new episodes releasing each Wednesday until the July 23 season finale.
Owen Wilson (“Loki”) stars in “Stick” as Pryce Cahill, a gifted golfer who went by the titular nickname in his heyday and whose career as a pro went down the drain following a meltdown during a tournament 20 years before we meet him in the series. Pryce had a long fall from grace after that fateful day on the course. Now, he’s divorced from his ex-wife, AmberLinn (Judy Greer, “White House Plumbers”), out of a job and on the verge of losing his house.
It’s almost too on-the-nose that Pryce drives around in one of the last vestiges of his past life: a bright yellow Corvette that’s seen better days, to put it lightly. A flashy sports car that’s been treated like a beater.
In the official trailer for the series, Pryce is sitting at a bar after what must have been a long day, only to be confronted by another patron, Mitts (Marc Maron, “The Order,” 2024), who tells the story of his failures for everyone to hear. Mitts, who could be mistaken for Pryce’s biggest hater after that display, is actually his closest friend and former caddy.
In the middle of a golf lesson with a senior citizen, lightning strikes for Pryce when he hears the sound of a killer drive.
Abandoning the lesson to find the source of this incredible swing, Pryce discovers 17-yearold Santi Wheeler (Peter Dager, “Insidious: The Red Door,” 2023), who is quickly chased out of the driving range by an employee of the course.
Inspired by the flighty virtuoso, Pryce tracks down Santi and learns two important things
Off course Disgraced pro golfer turns to coaching in ‘Stick’
from his mother, Elena (Mariana Trevino, “The House of Flowers”). Firstly, Santi’s remarkable skill comes from being coached by his father throughout his youth. Secondly, Santi no longer plays the sport — also because of his dad. Pryce sees the obvious potential in Santi and feels like he can help someone reach and surpass the peak that he himself summited before succumbing to the pressure of the sport. With nothing to lose, Pryce pitches himself as the one who can help Santi qualify for the U.S. amateur championship and charms Elena — leading them to all set out in an RV together to make an impression on the course.
Also starring in “Stick” are Lilli Kay (“Yellowstone”) as Zero and Timothy Olyphant (“Havoc,” 2025) as a fellow former pro golfer from Pryce’s past. Real PGA golfers lend some credibility to the series, with guest appearances from Collin Morikawa, Keegan Bradley, Max Homa and Wyndham Clark. CBS Sports broadcasters Jim Nantz and Trevor Immelman; Matt Scharff, Brad Dalke and Garrett Clark of Good Good Golf; and golf enthusiast Dan Rapaport make cameos in the show.
Jason Keller (“Ford v. Ferrari,” 2019) created “Stick” and also executive produces the sports sitcom. Jaffar Mahmood (“Young Sheldon”), Jonathan
Dayton (“Fleishman Is in Trouble”) and Valerie Faris (“Living With Yourself”) are the series directors.
Apple TV+ is home to one of the biggest heartwarming sports sitcom hits of the decade with “Ted Lasso,” and with the unexpected recent announcement of its fourth season’s renewal (two whole years after Season 3 premiered), “Stick” is here to make the wait feel a bit shorter for AFC Richmond fans. The stakes of sports stories — either based on true events or entirely fictional — work well as dramatic arcs in TV and film, transcending the world of sports and their fans. Two “Stick” stars have notable roles in sports-centric titles on their
resume. Of course, Wilson voiced anthropomorphic racecar Lightning McQueen in the Disney’s animated Cars franchise, spanning three feature films as well as shorts, video games and TV series.
Maron, meanwhile, starred as director Sam Sylvia in the beloved, canceled-too-soon Netflix series, “GLOW.” The show, set in the 1980s, followed the fictional professional wrestlers of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling as they struggled to make it. Maron’s character was a gruff, reluctant joiner — not too dissimilar to his role in “Stick.”
Speaking to Esquire in May, Keller got into developing the character of Pryce and casting
the role. “The idea of a character like Pryce had been bouncing around in my head for a long time,” Keller explained, “this sort of beautiful loser, or incredibly talented person that never lived up to his potential.” About Wilson landing the lead in the series, Keller said, “When I first started talking to him about the show and the character, very quickly I started to understand that the character of Pryce was being taken over by Owen Wilson and inhabited by the guy.”
Pull out your scorecards and tee up to the premiere of the brand-new streaming sitcom, “Stick,” premiering on Wednesday, June 4, on Apple TV+.

New city and partner: The fan-led movement to save the CBS procedural “Blue Bloods” may not have been successful, but the story will continue, thanks to the upcoming spinoff, “Boston Blue.”
Ordered straight to series back in February, the upcoming series will air in “Blue Bloods’” old Friday night time-slot as part of the network’s 2025-26 season. While it’s being touted as a “universe expansion” rather than a direct continuation of “Blue Bloods,” it will see Donnie Wahlberg reprising his role as Danny Regan, though, as the title suggests, the locale will be Boston instead of the Big Apple. What’s more, Danny will be partnered with the eldest daughter of another prominent law enforcement family, with former “Star Trek: Discovery” series lead Sonequa Martin-Green cast as Det. Lena Silver.
The casting news was announced by the stars themselves during a CBS press briefing last month, with filming set to begin late this summer.
“We love the Reagans. We have all loved the Reagans for so long,” Martin-Green said about the original “Blue Bloods” family
at the time of the announcement.
“And I feel that we’ll love the Peters, too. I’m super excited for this partnership, and to be back in a CBS family — and in this family, your family. It means a lot, and I’m grateful for it. I think we’re going to have a good time.”
For his part, Wahlberg — who is also picking up an executive producer credit with “Boston Blue” — emphasized that MartinGreen was “not the first choice” but “the only choice” for the role.
“One thing about ‘Blue Bloods’ and how beloved it was is because there are so many law enforcement families in this country,” Wahlberg added. “There’s not just the Reagans. They’re in every state, every city, every town, everywhere, and there are other families around that have stories to tell too. Danny’s story will continue the Reagan family. You can’t have Danny without Reagans — there’ll be connective tissue. But we’re also going to get to discover a new family and and carry on the tradition of telling their stories.”
In addition to her prominent role as Michael Burnham in “Star Trek: Discovery” on Paramount+, Martin-Green also starred as Sasha Williams in AMC’s “The Walking Dead.” Other credits include “The Good Wife,” “New Girl” and “My Dead Friend Zoe” (2024).

It’s all ‘Relative’ Jane Seymour uncovers
By Dana Simpson TV Media
Big or small, every family has its secrets. While some secrets are of the “wellknown” variety, often shifting with each retelling until the most recent version is practically unrecognizable from the truth, other family secrets are still very much kept under wraps — leaving current family members to speculate and investigate the potentially seedy deeds of their longdead ancestors.
These family mysteries form the backbone of the new unscripted series “Relative Secrets,” premiering Monday, June 2, on Acorn TV and BBC America. Hosted by “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” and “Harry Wild” actress Jane Seymour, the four-episode series blends true crime with genealogy to uncover the truth behind several cases that have plagued their respective relations for years.
In each hourlong episode, former Bond girl and Emmy winner Seymour sits down with “everyday American[s]” to discuss the moments — whether recent or centuries ago — that may have changed their ancestral landscape forever.
According to AMC, the parent network behind the Acorn TV series, “each episode in this suspenseful new series will investigate an everyday American family’s darkest mystery, aiming both to solve the mystery and explore how it shapes that family today. Colorful characters, rich cultural context and dramatic twists and turns abound in every tale, each of which connects the American family to their U.K. heritage.”
From a woman who is dealing with the trauma of having grown up with a serial killer for a father to a “99-year-old World War II veteran who worries his absence led to the murder of his grandmother” and a “mother who abandoned her three children to start a new secret life,” says AMC, “Relative Secrets” goes beyond the interviews and impact statements to present an investigative case backed by social and genealogical science, as helmed by seasoned and respected archeologist Natasha Billson.
secrets in new unscripted series
Best known in the U.K. for her work in “The Great British Dig” and “Castle Secrets,” Billson is a Bournemouth University-educated archeologist. Described by her IMDb biographer Chloe Duckworth as having “a passion for storytelling,” Billson has also “established an international project supporting Ukrainian archeologists ... and monuments at threat of bombardment and looting.”
“She is also known as the creator of the YouTube Live show “Archaeologists in Quarantine” on her channel Behind The Trowel,” Duckworth’s blurb continues, “and of the Heritage Media Group, which bridges the gap between heritage organizations and individuals [by way of] social media management, video production and training.”
For Seymour’s part, the actress has expressed delight that her work with Acorn TV will expand. For the past three years, Seymour has portrayed the titular heroine in the network’s cozy mystery series “Harry Wild,” about a retired English professor who spends her newfound free time investigating (and interfering with) crimes alongside her policeman son, Charlie Wild (Kevin Ryan, “Copper”).
“I’m thrilled to come aboard ‘Relative Secrets’ as host, deepening my rich relationship with Acorn TV,” said Seymour following the series order. “Now, in addition to solving cleverly crafted mysteries on ‘Harry Wild,’ I get the chance to uncover real family unknowns. As we all know, reality is often much stranger than fiction — I can’t wait to dive in.”
Screen Scramble
Written and directed by John Ealer (“The American West”) and Felicity Justrabo (“An Optimist’s Guide to the Planet”), “Relative Secrets” is executive produced by Ealer and Seymour, as well as David W. Brady and Kate Harrison Karman of “Stuff the British Stole” and “Wild Things with Dominic Monaghan.” “Relative Secrets” also marks the first-ever unscripted series for Acorn TV.
“We are delighted to begin Acorn TV’s journey into unscripted originals with ‘Relative Secrets’ and the incredible Jane Seymour,” Don Klees, senior vice president of programming for Acorn TV, said in a statement.
“This series blends true crime and investigation with the thrilling mystery storytelling Acorn TV audiences know and love, creating something truly special.”
Until now, the AMC-owned Acorn TV streaming service catered exclusively to scripted programming from a “deep library of revered mysteries, dramas and comedies — all commercial-free” (per AMC). Advertised on AMCNetworks.com as “North America’s largest streaming service specializing in premium British and international television,” Acorn TV’s recent programming list consists of “critically acclaimed commissioned and original series” including popular New Zealand series “My Life Is Murder” and “Under the Vines,” the Irish crime thriller “Bloodlands” and British crime dramas “Whitstable Pearl” and “Dalgliesh,” among many others.

Returning to the scenic Star Hill Ranch, this latest installment of “BBQ Brawl” pits Bobby Flay (“Bobby Flay’s Barbecue Addiction”) against two formidable newcomers: Maneet Chauhan (“The Secret Ingredient”) and Antonia Lofaso (“Beachside Brawl”). Season 6 of “BBQ Brawl: Flay V. Chauhan V. Lofaso” premieres Sunday, June 1, on Food Network and streams the next day on Max.
This season, these three powerhouse chefs each mentor teams of seasoned barbecue pitmasters, guiding them through high-stakes grilling challenges in pursuit of the ultimate title: “Master of ‘Cue.” Over the course of 10 episodes, the competitors face bold and sometimes bizarre culinary tasks, all while under the watchful eyes of returning judges Carson Kressley (“Celebrity Big Brother”), Rod-
ney Scott (“All-Star Best Thing I Ever Ate”) and Brooke Williamson (“Top Chef”). Only one pitmaster makes it through the flames to earn their victory.
“This season has something for everyone, whether you are a professional grill master, a weekend warrior or simply love the smokey char of barbecue done right,” said Flay. “Summertime heralds outdoor cooking, and ‘BBQ Brawl’ celebrates all that entails with a healthy dose of competition to keep it exciting.”
And exciting it is. In one of this season’s most unexpected twists, Flay, Chauhan and Lofaso face off against the Brawlers in a first-ever Captains vs. Competitors challenge. Teams push their culinary skills to the limit in a baking challenge and make use of Old West fire gear, followed by one of the most challenging techniques in grilling: cooking with the Argentinian Asado Iron Cross. Just when they think it’s over, a surprise elimi-
nation sends the remaining Brawlers straight into the finale, where an overnight cook-off decides who takes the “Master of ‘Cue” title.
“It’s a game of skill and cooking acumen but also teamwork and trust, and this season’s challenges really put all that to the test for the mentors and their teams,” said Betsy Ayala, head of content, food, for Warner Bros. Discovery. This season, produced by Rock Shrimp Productions for Food Network, features a standout lineup of competitors, including Tyler Anderson (“Top Chef”), Kyle Bryner (“Happy Barbecue”), Tim Van Doren, Jason Dady (“A Moveable Feast with Fine Cooking”), Rosalie Bradford Pareja, Alexandra Donnadio (“Next Level Chef”), Greg Gatlin (“Top Chef”), Brad Leighninger (“Guy’s Grocery Games”), Thyron Mathews, Orchid Paulmeier (“The Next Food Network Star”), Arturo Ramon and Aarthi Sampath (“Tournament of Champions”).

The bonds between mother and daughter continue to be tested when Season 3 of “Ginny & Georgia” premieres Thursday, June 5, on Netflix. After having lived somewhat of a nomadic lifestyle, moving town to town for much of their lives, edgy and rootless Georgia Miller (Brianne Howey, “Dollface”) and her two children, Ginny (Antonia Gentry, “Time Cut,” 2024) and Austin (Diesel La Torraca, “La Brea”), land in Massachusetts for yet another “fresh start.” As the family began to settle in and Georgia realized how well her kids were adapting to this specific new lifestyle, she starts to question whether moving again, as she had always planned, is a good idea after all. Now, with their roots firmly planted, the Millers’ lives get upended once more — when Georgia is arrested for murder during her own wedding. Now, as Georgia’s fairy tale ending seems further away than ever, Ginny must decide how far she’s truly willing to take the concept of “Ginny and Georgia against the world” (per Netflix). From creator Sarah Lampert (“Haze,” 2016) in her first writing and producing role, the dramedy series also stars Felix Mallard (“Locke & Key”), Sara Waisglass (“Degrassi: The Next Generation”), Jennifer
Robertson (“Schitt’s Creek”), Scott Porter (“Up Here”), Katie Douglas (“Pretty Hard Cases”), Chelsea Clark (“Degrassi: Next Class”), Ty Doran (“Manifest”) and Noah Lamanna (“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds”).
“Tires” - Season 2
Hit the road running with Season 2 of the comedy series “Tires,” premiering Thursday, June 5, on Netflix. Starring, executive produced, cocreated and written by comedian Shane Gillis (“Gilly and Keeves”), “Tires” centers on Will (Steven Gerben, “Gilly and Keeves”), who is the heir to his father’s auto repair chain despite being nervous and unqualified for the job. As Will attempts to turn his father’s business around, he is constantly tortured by his cousin Shane (Gillis), who is now also his employee. After Will’s many attempts to prove himself led to as many issues as it did successes, this new season finds the franchise failing upward after the surprise success of a big marketing scheme. Now, Will and Shane must grow both personally and professionally to keep their business afloat. Created by Gillis, Gerben and John McKeever (“Gilly and Keeves”), the series also stars “Gilly and Keeves’” Chris O’Connor and Kilah Fox, as well as Stavros Halkias (“Let’s Start a Cult,” 2024), alongside Season 2 guest stars Thomas Haden Church (“Twisted Metal”), Vince Vaughn (“Nonnas,” 2025), Jon Lovitz (“A
League of Their Own,” 1992), Ron White (“Roadies”), Steph Tolev (“Drugstore June,” 2024) and Veronika Slowikowska (“Davey & Jonesie’s Locker”).
WHAT’S NEW ON HULU “Predator: Killer of Killers” (2025)
Adding to the expansive Predator universe, the new animated action film “Predator: Killer of Killers” premieres Friday, June 6, on Hulu. The eighth installment in the franchise, this new anthology film follows the stories of three of the fiercest warriors in human history. First, a viking raider guides her son on a bloody quest for revenge. Next, in feudal Japan, a ninja turns against his Samurai brother in a fight for family succession. Then, in World War II, a pilot investigates an otherworldly threat to the Allies. The one thing all of these stories have in common? These fierce humans are merely prey for their unknown opponent — “the ultimate killer of killers” (per Disney). Directed by Dan Trachtenberg (“Prey,” 2022) and Josh Wassung (“Masters of the Air”), the film is written by Micho Rutare (“Z Nation”), based on a story by Trachtenberg. Michael Biehn (“Aliens,” 1986), Rick Gonzalez (“Law & Order: Organized Crime”), Louis Ozawa (“Hunters”) and Lindsay LaVanchy (“The Labyrinth,” 2017) voice star.

Meanwhile, their older sister, Candace (Ashley Tisdale, “High School Musical,” 2006), is determined to get the boys caught in the midst of their adventures and get them in trouble with their mom. Plus, the family’s pet platypus, Perry (Dee Bradley Baker, “SpongeBob SquarePants”), continues his double life as a secret agent, facing off against the nefarious plots of Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz
(Dan Povenmire, “Hamster & Gretel”). This season, according to Disney, “the boys will break several world records, Candace will take her driver’s license test, and Perry will finally make a trip to the vet!” Created by Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh (“Pete the Cat”), the series also voice stars Marsh, Caroline Rhea (“Sabrina the Teenage Witch”), Alyson Stoner (“Pete the Cat”), Maulik Pancholy (“30 Rock”), Tyler Alexander Mann (“Milo Murphey’s Law”) and Mitchel Musso (“Hannah Montana”).

“Love Island USA” - Season 7 Returning to Fiji once again in search of love, an all-new group of singles take on “Love Island USA” when the series’ seventh season premieres Tuesday, June 3, on Peacock. According to Peacock, this new season features “new additions to the vibrant Fiji villa, and the return of the infamous Casa Amor. Temptations will rise and drama will ensue as islanders face brand-new couples’ challenges, jaw-dropping twists and turns, and even a few surprise guests.” As the singles search for romance in paradise, building relationships that are tested as more “bombshells” enter the villa through the season, the budding couples are tempted away from their partners as they begin to question whether to stay with them
or try to build love with someone new. Meanwhile, these beachbound hopefuls will be at the mercy of viewers at home, as they hold the power to choose who “gets another shot at love” and who must leave the villa for good. While information on the singles has been kept tight-lipped, the season will see the return of host Ariana Madix (“Vanderpump Rules”) and narrator Iain Stirling (“Buffering”).

“The Killer Clown: Murder on the Doorstep” Turning nightmares and horror movies into reality, a harrowing story of murder comes to Sundance Now and AMC+ when “The Killer Clown: Murder on the Doorstep” premieres Thursday, June 5. Spanning three episodes, this eerie, true crime series chronicles the events surrounding
the murder of Florida’s Marlene Warren, a young wife and mother. But, with a solid alibi making the case go cold, there was nothing new for three decades — until a new suspect suddenly appeared and was arrested for the crime. Featuring conversations with Marlene’s son Joe Ahrens, as well as investigators and attorneys for both the defense and prosecution, “the series unravels the chilling motives behind the murder and the quest for justice that spanned nearly 30 years” (per AMC). Directed by Ellie Merz (“Untold”), the series is produced by Flicker Productions and distributed by BossaNova Media.

Q: TV crossover events seem to happen all the time now, but what was the first one?
A: It’s generally accepted that the first TV crossover event happened in 1957, and it was a pretty unlikely one: when Superman showed up on “I Love Lucy.”
Instances of characters from one show appearing on another one are pretty common now, as you say, largely because of the franchise-show phenomenon. For example, earlier this year we had crossovers between “Law & Order” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” and between the franchise trio “Chicago Med,” “Chicago Fire” and “Chicago PD.”
These are big for fans, of course, but they’re hardly as adventurous as putting the deadpan, heroic Man of Steel into an episode of a wry sitcom such as “I Love Lucy.”
The premise was straightforward: Lucy (Lucille Ball, “The Lucy Show”) was trying to get George Reeves, star of “Adventures of Superman,” to come to her son’s birthday party. Hijinx ensued, as they always did on “I Love Lucy,” but ultimately she made it happen.
With that, an attention-getting TV staple was born.
Not surprisingly, Keith Thibodeaux (“The Andy Griffith
Show”), who played Lucy’s son, Little Ricky, on the show, said this was his favorite episode, telling Fox News in 2022 that Reeves-asSuperman was his hero in real life as well.
Q: Michelle Williams did a great job singing in “The Greatest Showman.” Does she do any other singing roles?
A: Michelle Williams (“Brokeback Mountain,” 2005) has done quite a bit of singing over her career — she says she treats it like therapy. And she has some more of that therapy lined up.
“I find that singing and dancing is a direct path to joy,” she told the New Zealand Herald in 2017 while promoting her role in that year’s smash hit “The Greatest Showman.” “And I just wanted more of it, that’s why I wanted to make the film.”
You’ll understand why she might go seeking more joy when you look at the rest of her resume, which leans heavily toward heartbreaking dramas about traumatized women.
Of course, not all musicals are as light and airy as “The Greatest Showman.” Williams first convinced people of her musical range with 2011’s “My Week with Marilyn,” a biography of the famously troubled screen legend Marilyn Monroe, earning a Golden Globe for the performance.
And she got to do a bit more singing and dancing on the small screen in the 2019 miniseries
“Fosse/Verdon,” playing legendary Broadway dancer Gwen Verdon.
Williams is looking to recreate that musical biopic magic again with “Fever,” a film about the great pop singer Peggy Lee. However, that’s been kicking around in various stages of development for years now, so it may be a while before we actually see it.
As is usually the case with multitalented screen stars, Williams also does a fair bit of Broadway on the side. She was nominated for a Tony in 2016 for “Blackbird,” the play she did just before making “The Greatest Showman.”
“Churchill”? It came with a lot less screen time, but it grossed $7 million at the box office.
The point I’m making is that Purefoy is an established supporting star at the stage of his career when he can take roles that are interesting. That means he can be hard to keep track of.
Since doing “The Following,” he’s done 13 films and 17 shows. These range from the sci-fi series “Altered Carbon” and the animated “Trollhunters” series, to the southern-gothic mystery “Hap and Leonard” and the romantasy
Sudoku
Fill in the grid so that every row, every column, and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1 through 9 Solution on page 6.
Q: What’s James Purefoy doing now? I assumed he would get something bigger after “The Following.”
A: In the career of an adventurous genre-hopper such as James Purefoy (“A Knight’s Tale,” 2001), it’s hard to say what “bigger” would mean.
Is starring across three seasons and 45 episodes of fan-pleasing procedural thriller “The Following” a bigger role than doing two episodes of the star-studded remake of the miniseries “Roots”? Because that was Purefoy’s next gig.
And since film is generally seen as more prestigious than TV, what about his role as King George VI in the 2017 historical drama
“A Discovery of Witches,” which he joined for its second season in 2021.
But some roles are undeniably big and, therefore, impossible to miss, such as his next film role, playing King Randor in the bigbudget fantasy action film “Masters of the Universe.” Due out in 2026, it’s based on the He-Man toy line from the ‘80s, and so it’s part of the nostalgia-mining trend that’s also given us the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the mega-budget “Transformers” movies.
