Every so often a television series emerges and completely captures the spirit of a generation. For millennials, particularly those who dedicate a major portion of their time to true crime podcasts and documentaries, that show was Jeff Davis’s (“Teen Wolf”) dark procedural “Criminal Minds,” which premiered on CBS in September 2005. After 15 seasons on television, the show drew to an end in February 2020, just prior to the first wave of COVID-19 lockdowns.

The series wouldn’t stay gone for long, however, as in February 2021 — not more than a year after its 15th and (would be) final season — a “Criminal Minds” revival, to be subtitled “Evolution,” was announced for Paramount+. Now three years into its second life (the 19th season overall), the new season of “Criminal Minds: Evolution” begins Thursday, May 28, on Paramount+.

A moodier, more psychological approach to the crime procedural model than its network companion “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” “Criminal Minds” follows a team of FBI profilers as they analyze the methods, means and possible motives behind spree and serial killings across the United States. Led by Behavioral Analysis Unit Chief Aaron Hotchner (Thomas Gibson, “Dharma & Greg”) and Senior Supervisory Director Jason Gideon (Mandy Patinkin, “The Princess Bride,” 1987), the BAU uses evidence and victimology to create an unknown subject, or “UnSub,” profile, thus essentially creating a guide to identifying the murderer.

As the series heads into Season 19, “the BAU [continues] to track complex and evolving criminal networks” while “still playing whacka-mole with Sicarius offshoots and devotees” (per Paramount+).

“With danger this palpable,” the Paramount+ description continues, “a serialized approach allows for a deeper look into the psyches of these killers and the approach of the dedicated professionals who hunt them down.”

The November 2022 return of “Criminal Minds” continued the well-established storylines for many of the original series’ characters, largely focusing on Jennifer “JJ” Jareau (A.J. Cook, “Final Destination 2,” 2003) and Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness, “Pretty the Series”), both involved since Season 1; Emily Prentiss (Paget Brewster, “Community”), involved off and on since Season 2; and David Rossi (Joe Mantegna, “Baby’s Day Out,” 1994), involved since Season 3. Later-season “Criminal Minds” characters Dr. Tara Lewis (Aisha Tyler, “Archer”) and Luke Alvez (Adam Rodriguez,

“CSI: Miami”), both of whom joined in Season 12, also feature heavily as part of “Evolution’s” main cast, as do Elias Voit (Zach Gilford, “Midnight Mass”) and Tyler Green (RJ Hatanaka, “Nancy Drew”), who were written into the series as of “Evolution’s” premiere at Season 16.

And while all leading cast members are confirmed for Season 19, many fans of the procedural are most excited for the growing gamut of guest stars, which includes “Heated Rivalry” star Connor Storrie, “Community” comedian Yvette Nicole Brown, “Star Trek: Voyager’s” Jeri Ryan, “Weeds” actor Justin Kirk and “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” star Clark Gregg.

Paramount+ also notes the returns of Nicole Pacent (“Westworld”) as prosecutor Rebecca Wilson and Paul F. Tompkins (“BoJack Horseman”) as conspiracy theorist Brian Garrity. Additional Season 19 guest stars also include Cara Jade Myers (“Killers of the Flowers Moon,” 2023), Cress Williams (“Black Lightning”), Lyndon Smith (“Parenthood”), Kofi Siriboe (“Queen Sugar”), Richard Cabral (“Mayans”), Jim True-Frost (“The Wire”), Inny Clemons (“Judging Amy”), Nicholas Gonzalez (“The Good Doctor”), Dash Mihok (“Ray Donovan”)

and Rob Yang (“Succession”).

But despite the many confirmed cast members, die-hard fans are still waiting (as of writing) for news of Dr. Spencer Reid’s possible return.

Reid, played by Las Vegas native Matthew Gray Gubler (“500 Days of Summer,” 2009), was a main character across 324 episodes of “Criminal Minds” from 2005 to 2020. Beloved for his neurodivergent traits, cavernous mind and lack of a filter amid social situations, the multiple PhD-holding genius has appeared in just one “Evolution” episode to date: Season 18, Episode 3, titled “Time to Say Goodbye,” in which the BAU worked to solve an organ-harvesting case. And while plenty are hoping that 2025 episode is just a taste of what’s to come in Season 19, no news has yet been released regarding Gubler’s potential involvement.

One thing that has been announced, however, is that Season 19 will not be “Criminal Minds’” last. The series was renewed for a 20th season in March 2026, just two months ahead of the Season 19 premiere. As a result, “Criminal Minds” is poised to join the ranks of America’s longest-running crime procedurals, a list

currently led by NBC’s 27-season series “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” starring Mariska Hargitay (“ER”) and rapper Ice-T (“New Jack City,” 1991).

At the end of the day — and regardless of how many seasons “Criminal Minds” boasts when all is said and done — CBS is clearly very proud of the found family it created at the BAU.

“It is the quintessential CBS hit,” the network’s executive vice president of current programs Amy Reisenbach said upon the show’s wrap on CBS, adding, “We are so proud to have aired it.”

‘Summerwater’ explores a bad trip to Scotland

Picture a peaceful waterfront resort on Scotland’s serene coast. A getaway perfect for forgetting about the world’s troubles and reconnecting with loved ones, nature and one’s deepest self — and the ideal setting for murder? “Summerwater,” a new six-part mystery thriller adapted from the 2020 novel of the same name by author Sarah Moss, premieres Monday, May 25, on Acorn TV. New episodes drop weekly on the streamer on Mondays.

The temporary residents of Summerwater may have come for a stay in the resort’s cabins to get away from it all, but rest and relaxation cannot be achieved even with generous distance from neighboring vacationers. Tensions simmer between the tourists and boil over when there is a devastating, lethal fire. Was it an accident or was someone really out for blood on vacation?

From Acorn TV: “A thrilling and compulsive drama about relationships, sex, class and not being able to escape yourself, ‘Summerwater’ is a surreal world that takes the viewer on a journey of wit, heart and tragedy. The drama stars Dougray Scott (“Sherlock & Daughter”) as David Campbell; Shirley Henderson (“Dept. Q”) as Annie Campbell; Gabriel Scott (“House of the Dragon”) as young David; Valene Kane (“Say Nothing”) as Justine Tindall; Daniel Rigby (“I, Jack Wright”) as Steve Tindall; Anna Prochniak (“Showtrial”) as Alina Piotrowska; Shereen Cutkelvin (“Annika”) as Millie Nkene; Anders Hayward (“Wild Cherry”) as Josh; Shauna Macdonald (“Shetland”) as Rachel Henderson; James Harkness (“Raised by Wolves”) as Gavin Macquoid; Jamie Sives (“Outlander: Blood of My Blood”) as Ian Henderson; and Arnas Fedaravicius (“The White Lotus”) as Marijonas Zaliskevicius.

All of the families find themselves tied to each other during their waterfront vacations as they are plagued by the unpredictable weather of Summerwater. Per Acorn TV, Summerwater is an “all-knowing place where residents are confronted with their deepest desires and darkest truths.” With so many vulnerabilities surfacing among relative strangers, it’s no wonder that more than just someone’s feelings get hurt. The series opens with the investigation into how a tragedy could have happened on holiday, and the following episodes slowly reveal everyone involved.

Henderson spoke about portraying Annie, a character living with the effects of dementia, in an interview last November.

“I liked the idea of a woman for whom things are changing,” she told The Independent. “Part

of her is leaving, and other parts of her are coming in through memories and the past. She’s questioning things and haunted by things.”

Annie and her caregiver husband David experience the stress of a relationship strained by illness, a pressure that follows them on their holiday at Summerwater. About the reality of Annie and David’s marriage, Henderson said, “Who said life was going to be easy. We could all just walk away, we could just say, ‘OK, I’m fed up.’ But people don’t — we cling on. You need the battles in life.”

The upcoming mystery series was written for television by John Donnelly (“The Pass,” 2016), with Robert McKillop (“Ludwig”) directing four episodes and Fiona Walton (“Rebus”) directing the penultimate episode and the finale of “Summerwater.” The show was produced by Freedom Scripted in association with All3Media International, with support from Screen Scotland. Mike Ellen (“River City”) is executive producer for Freedom and Jules Hussey (“Before We Die”) is the series producer.

Kane spoke with Channel 4 ahead of the “Summerwater” premiere on the network last November, praising McKillop’s vision, saying, “Viewers will be really shocked and surprised by the immediacy of the way that [McKillop] has styled and shot the series. It’s unlike anything that we might have seen before. ‘Summerwater’ is very moody and atmospheric; it’s filmic and feels much more like an indie film, which is another reason why I love it so much.”

While the series originally premiered in Britain last year, it makes its debut on this side of the pond as part of Acorn TV’s second-annual Murder Mystery May. To mark the occasion, every Monday this month, Acorn TV will drop new episodes of fan-favorite mystery series in celebration. All of the whodunit bases are covered with the latest installments of “Dead & Buried,” “The Feud on Shelbury Drive,” “The Island,” “The Brokenwood Mysteries,” “You’re Killing Me” and “Murdoch Mysteries” available to stream now.

To kick things off, “Food Network’s Top 10” begins with

an easy-to-acquire, alwayssatisfying takeout staple: pizza. Taking another trip around the sun, “The Four Seasons” lands on Netflix Thursday, May 28, with Season 2 picking up in the wake of Nick’s (Steve Carell, “The Office”) sudden death and his girlfriend, Ginny (Erika Henningsen, “Hazbin Hotel”), revealing she’s pregnant. Get into the meat of the family business when Season 2 of “Deli Boys” makes its debut Thursday, May 28, on Hulu. Season 1 followed brothers Mir (Asif Ali, “Wrecked”) and Raj (Saagar Shaikh, “Ms. Marvel”) after the loss of their father (Iqbal Theba, “Glee”) and the discovery that not everything Baba did was above board. Turns out their family business was nothing but a front for a multimillion-dollar drug-smuggling ring hidden behind a chain of Philadelphia convenience stores. Q: Why does the new “Wuthering Heights” movie only cover half of the story? Where’s the second generation — Hareton and Catherine?

A: Emerald Fennell (“Saltburn,” 2023), who wrote, directed and produced the new bigscreen version of “Wuthering Heights” (2026), has always insisted that hers was truly an adaptation.

Indeed, in multiple interviews, she asked viewers to note that in the opening of the film, the title is in quotation marks.

“I’m aware of how personal the book is to so many of us, so I wanted to communicate as early as possible that it could only ever be an attempt to take a tiny piece of the book and make sense of it,” she said in an interview with W Magazine at the time of the film’s release.

“It’s vast, the book. It covers generations,” she continued. “I could only take my experience of it and try to translate it.”

There it is — the “generations” issue. That’s often a problem for films.

It’s well known that movies generally need to have two lead actors (the Oscars have been set up that way since their beginning). That’s a challenge in filming a book like “Wuthering Heights,” whose main characters switch at the halfway point.

In this case, the film’s lead actors — Margot Robbie (“Barbie,” 2023) and Jacob Elordi (“Frankenstein,” 2025), two of the buzziest stars of the moment — would essentially disap-

pear halfway through the film if Fennell were to stick closely to the source material.

It should also be noted that Fennell isn’t the first person to take this tack. Indeed, of the many previous screen adaptations of Emily Bronte’s beloved novel, the two most famous ones also essentially skip the second generation.

[Spoiler alert if you haven’t seen 2026’s “Wuthering Heights,” or the older ones, for that matter] Like this new film, the 1970 film starring Timothy Dalton (“The Living Daylights,” 1987) and the 1939 adaptation that was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar both also ended at Catherine’s death.

Q: John Ratzenberger seems to be in every Pixar movie. Does he own part of the company or something? If not, why is he in so many of their movies?

A: John Ratzenberger — previously of “Cheers” fame, in which he played mailman and general know-it-all Cliff Clavin — has done voices in 23 Pixar movies so far. According to multiple reports, the Pixar production team has called him its “good-luck charm.”

Notably, he had a role in every Pixar movie until 2020’s “Soul,” which happened to kick off a bad box-office run for the company.

However, that tough period also coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced “Soul” to go straight to streaming instead of a proper theatrical release. So its bad numbers can’t all be down to Ratzenberger’s luck properties, unless you blame him for the pandemic as well.

His semi-break from Pixar also happened to coincide (roughly) with the exit of Pixar’s former creative boss, John Lasseter (“Toy Story,” 1995), in 2018. He and Ratzenberger were said to have been close friends.

I call it a “semi-break” because Ratzenberger has continued to do some of the Pixar films, but post-“Soul,” it’s only been sequels to films he’d already been in (starting with “Inside Out 2” in 2024).

He’s about to do the same again in a few weeks: he’ll be reprising his role as Hamm the Piggy Bank in “Toy Story 5,” due out June 19.

Q: What’s Ellie Kemper been up to? I’ve been waiting for her next project since “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.”

A: She’s kept a bit of a low profile since her beloved Netflix sitcom “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” ended in 2019, but if that’s the last thing you’ve seen Ellie Kemper in, you’ve missed a few things.

Most notably, you missed her as part of the ensemble in the very high-profile “Home Sweet Home Alone” (2021), a semi-reboot of the 1990 holiday classic “Home Alone.” You also missed her in the Netflix romcom film “Happiness for Beginners” (2023).

And there’s been a lot of voice work in those years as well, including an arc on the kids’ series “Eureka” and in 2020’s “We Bare Bears: The Movie.”

If you’re watching for her next big project, that’s the direction to look. And as a “Kimmy” fan, you’re going to like what you find.

She’s signed up to star in the Paramount+ kids’ series “The Elephant & Piggie Show,” voicing the titular Piggie. And Elephant will be played by none other than Tituss Burgess (“Central Park”), who also played her character’s best friend in “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.”
