“A Quiet Place” (2018) star John Krasinski returns to his TV role as Jack Ryan in the new political action film “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War,” premiering Wednesday, May 20, on Prime Video. They say heroes never die; and although that statement rings true in a fairly abstract way in real life (and is largely understood to mean that an influential person’s work and memory remain relevant long after their death), the magical world of film and television can adopt a much more literal, often otherworldly approach.
From James Bond (most recently portrayed by Daniel Craig in 2021’s “No Time to Die”) to Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise, “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning,” 2025), many of the most unkillable on-screen heroes are powerhouse secret agents. Jack Ryan, a secret agent born to the page from the mind of late author Tom Clancy (Rainbow Six), has had the pleasure of surviving on both small- and largescreen formats. Now, Ryan returns for more.
“Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War,” a new political action film from director Andrew Bernstein (“Ozark”), premieres Wednesday, May 20, on Prime Video.
In his current iteration (which emerged in August 2018 for Prime’s “Jack Ryan” TV series), begrudging CIA analyst Jack Ryan is portrayed by “The Office” and “A Quiet Place” (2018) actor John Krasinski. The fifth actor to tackle the physically demanding role since 1990 — after Alec Baldwin (“The Hunt for Red October,” 1990), Harrison Ford (“Patriot Games,” 1992, and “Clear and Present Danger,” 1994), Ben Affleck (“The Sum of All Fears,” 2002) and Chris Pine (“Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,” 2014) — Krasinski has starred as Ryan in 30 hour-long episodes over eight years, making him the most experienced in the role after Ford.
“Ghost War” will be Krasinski’s first featurelength project as Ryan, however, which brings a whole new set of challenges for actor and character alike.
“In this new film,” reads the official Prime Video plot synopsis, “Jack Ryan is reluctantly thrust back into the world of espionage when an international covert mission unravels a deadly conspiracy, forcing him to confront a rogue black ops unit, and the clock is ticking. Operating in real time with lives on the line and the threat escalating at every turn, Jack reunites with battle-tested CIA operative Mike November [Michael Kelly, “Dawn of the Dead,” 2004] and former CIA boss James Greer [Wendell Pierce, “The Wire”], their combined experience the only edge they have against an enemy who knows their every move.

Betty Gabriel (“Get Out,” 2017), who portrays CIA director and Rome’s former chief of station Elizabeth Wright, also makes the jump from series to the film, while the new actors joining Miller include JJ Feild (“Captain America: The First Avenger,” 2011), Max Beesley (“Hijack”), Douglas Hodge (“Joker,” 2019), Diarmuid de Faoite (“Monster,” 2019), McKenna Bridger (“Three Months to Break Your Heart”) and Khalid Laith (“A Hologram for the King,” 2016).
In the film’s trailer — which released on April 16 and, as of April 28, has more than 12.3 million views on YouTube — Ryan appears to be enjoying a quiet CIA-free “civilian life” when Greer appears in an unmarked black SUV and asks Ryan to join him.
“Whatever it is, I’m not doing it,” Ryan tells his former boss. “I just need you to meet a
guy,” Greer responds, knowing full well Ryan can’t deny a chance to save his country from threat. As expected, Ryan answers “no,” but it’s too late: the trailer cuts to an aerial shot of Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, replete with dancing fountains, as November tells Ryan over earpiece, “God, I’ve missed this.” What follows is a murder, a series of high-octane fight scenes and several recognizable landmarks from the UAE to the U.K. and around the world.
The story for “Ghost War” was created by Krasinski, Aaron Rabin (“Nobody 2,” 2025) and Noah Oppenheim (“Zero Day”) from the characters and backstories established in Clancy’s extensive life’s work. Before his death in October 2013, Clancy wrote 17 novels in the Ryanverse, the last five of which (released between 2010 and 2013) were co-written with Gray Man series author Mark Greaney. Since Clancy’s death, Greaney has continued the Ryanverse, which will contain 47 novels as of the anticipated release of “The Coldest War” this coming November.
At the end of the day, Krasinski’s return as Ryan affirms his 2018 statement to Variety that Clancy’s protagonist is the relatable hero we need to see on our screens.
“Jack Ryan ... is such a great hero for right now,” Krasinski said upon taking on the role. “He doesn’t have a cape, he doesn’t have stuff flying out of his hands, he’s just a guy with his brain and his instincts,” Krasinski said during his Variety cover interview, adding, “[He has] less sex, but he’s our James Bond.”

Wrap it up A stack of season and series finales air this week

Of all the seasons, finale season is one of the most beautiful. With the views best enjoyed from the comfort of one’s own couch, remote in hand, anyone with a cable or internet connection can take pleasure in the sights, sounds and suspense of their favorite shows closing their latest chapters.
CBS kicks off a week of endings with season finales of “FBI” and its newest spinoff series, “CIA,” Monday, May 18. “Survivor” wraps up its historic 50th season Wednesday, returning to form and crowning the winner in a live vote reading. Thursday sees some sitcoms have the last laugh while a late-night show says goodnight for the last time.
Season finales of “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage,” “Ghosts” and “Elsbeth,” air Thursday, May 21. Stephen Colbert (“The Colbert Report”) bids viewers farewell from behind his “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” desk for the final time Thursday, after more than a decade of nightly monologues, sketches, celebrity interviews and musical performances. Finally, it’s finale night for first responders on Friday with “Sheriff Country,” “Fire Country” and “Boston Blue” all closing out the season.
To catch up on any of these shows (with the exception of “The Late Show,” catch those segments on the show’s official YouTube page) ahead of their finales this week, stream them on Paramount+. While “The Late Show” sings its swan song this week, the rest of the mentioned series will return in CBS’s fall 2026 or spring 2027 lineup.
After cleaning house of the first two spinoffs — “FBI: Most Wanted” and “FBI: International” — in May 2025, Dick Wolf’s (“Law & Order”) bureau-centric franchise focused on the eighth season of originating series “FBI” and its intriguing new show, “CIA.” In the upcoming episode of “FBI,” titled “Defector,” FBI special agents Maggie Bell (Missy Peregrym, “Van Helsing”), OA Zidan (Zeeko Zaki, “Valor”) and the team must reach out to an old foe when a bioweapon is stolen.
Meanwhile, in the “CIA” finale, Colin (Tom Ellis, “Tell Me Lies”) and Bill (Nick Gehlfuss, “Chicago Med”) are confronted with a dangerous figure from Colin’s past. The show’s debut season has seen the odd couple of CIA agent Colin Glass — a suave British rebel — and FBI agent Bill Goodman, who lives up to his surname, learn to work together in the joint investigative cell aimed to out the mole within the CIA’s New York City operation.
In an interview with CBS New York in March, Ellis explained how “CIA” differentiated itself from its action-packed originating series, saying, “The CIA approach to law enforcement is a much
more voyeuristic approach where they spend a lot of time watching and collecting intelligence about people before they actually operate and do anything about it.” The table’s been flipped in a sense in “CIA” as all season, unbeknownst to Colin, he is being closely watched by Bill, the one tasked with rooting out the department’s mole. Will Colin discover that he himself is the subject of investigation? Only the finale will tell.
There hasn’t been a similar season-arcing storyline in the latest season of “FBI,” however, a baddie from Season 7 did make his return in a recent episode, titled “Forgiven,” this time with a very personal crime. Ray DiStefano (Matthew Rauch, “Your Friends & Neighbors”), out of prison after Maggie sent him away, lured her into his trap by abducting her estranged sister, Erin (Adrienne Rose Bengtsson, “Inventing Anna”), and then Maggie. DiStefano set the “FBI” team on a wild chase that ended in his demise off the edge of a cliff and the discovery of Erin’s body in a remote cabin.
If heart-pounding action dramas aren’t your thing, rest assured there’s more to catch this week on CBS. With “Survivor” handing select gameplay decisions over to fans in celebration of the show’s 50th season, the long-running reality competition show became a democracy run by viewers for the first time. The results ranged from inconsequential — tribe colors — to essential, like whether the castaways had to earn their rice and supplies. The fan-voted decisions come to their conclusion with the already decided live finale in Los Angeles, airing Wednesday, May 20, as well as the final four challenge and whether to keep fire-making to determine the final three contestants.
Then, back-to-back episodes close out this season of “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage,” “Ghosts” ends its fifth season with a two-part finale and the titular Elsbeth (Carrie Preston, “True Blood”) finds herself investigating the murder of a cabaret performer as the third season of the quirky police procedural wraps up this Thursday.

How many bests can Bobby beat? Chef Bobby Flay (“Boy Meets Grill with Bobby Flay”) competes against top chefs in “Beat Bobby Flay,” airing a new episode Tuesday, May 19, on Food Network.
In this fan-favorite series, Flay invites two guests — often celebrities, fellow chefs or friends of Flay’s — to come down to the kitchen, where they introduce that week’s duo of competitors. These competitors must cook a quick and easy dish involving a mystery ingredient chosen by Flay, and then present their dishes to Flay’s visiting guests. The player who serves the better dish then moves on to the second round, where they go
head-to-head in a cook-off against Flay himself.
To even the playing field, this second round offers Flay’s competitors a “home-field” advantage. Flay enters the kitchen without knowing what he’s about to cook — and what he’s cooking is his challenger’s signature dish. In the end, a panel of Food Network’s top chefs determines a winner through a blind taste test.
And, as the network describes: “If Bobby goes down, the winner can tell the world, ‘I beat Bobby Flay!’” Recently, “Beat Bobby Flay” has seen an impressive lineup of guests, such as actor Josh Gad (“Frozen,” 2013) and chef Damaris Phillips (“Southern & Hungry”); “Abbott Elementary’s” Quinta Brunson and chef Michael Voltaggio (“Top Chef”); and “Shark Tank’s”
Lori Greiner, who appears alongside chef Scott Conant (“Chopped”). But no matter the guest, the chef or the challenge, it’s always a toss-up to see who’ll win the round. Since the series’ premiere in 2013 — and across the series’ 500-plus episodes — Flay has certainly seen his fair share of wins. But even the grill master himself can’t win ‘em all.

“Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed” - Season 1

Something stranger than fiction lifts off the pages of a famous novelist’s work when “You’re Killing Me” premieres Monday, May 18, on Acorn TV. “The Boroughs” - Season 1
The Duffer Brothers (“Stranger Things”) are trading Hawkins for the New Mexico desert with their latest supernatural series, “The Boroughs.” From creators Jeffrey Addiss (“The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim,” 2024) and Will Matthews (“Life in a Year,” 2020), the eight-episode drama premieres Thursday, May 21, on Netflix and tells the story of a picturesque retirement community hiding a dark secret beneath its perfectly manicured lawns. “Wanda Sykes: Legacy” (2026)
Wanda Sykes (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”) returns to her roots in “Wanda Sykes: Legacy,” dropping Tuesday, May 19, on Netflix. “Mating Season” - Season 1

Q: Is Mothra going to show up in “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters”?
A: So far, the Apple TV series “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” a continuation of the classic Godzilla movies that have been produced on and off since the 1950s, has stuck mostly to the big guy himself, Godzilla.
I say “mostly” because (spoiler alert for anyone who hasn’t seen Season 2, which aired this spring) the second season featured King Kong as a sometimes-rival, sometimes-ally of the amphibious mega-lizard. This tracks with the recent big-screen films, most notably 2021’s “Godzilla vs. Kong.”
But as you point out, the Godzilla movies have produced a rich list of other monsters over the years, one of the most notable being Mothra, a giant moth who has similarly worked and tangled with Godzilla multiple times over the decades.
But “Monarch” has no plans to introduce Mothra or any of the other classic monsters. Not that they haven’t thought about it.
“We had some bad auditions from Mothra,” executive producer Tory Tunnell (“Novocaine,” 2025) told ComicBook.com. Instead, the producers decided to create a new monster as the antagonist in Season 2, which they called Titan X. “I think that we felt like it would be really fun to do something new and to give audiences something that they weren’t expecting.”
That doesn’t mean they’re not willing to play with the lore. For example, at one point in Season
2, we’re given a brief look at records of past monster appearances, and they refer to a historical sighting of one called “Titanus Mosura,” which is the original, Japanese name of Mothra.
Q: Have Penn and/or Teller done any acting work outside their magic shows?
A: Penn and Teller (“Penn & Teller: Fool Us”) got famous by blending magic with comedy and storytelling over the years, and though that seems like a natural path to acting, they’ve been reluctant to follow it. Lately, all their focus is back on their roots as touring stage magicians — they’re currently on a world tour celebrating their 50th anniversary as a magic act.
That’s how they started out, before they became famous via their Emmy-winning 1985 PBS special “Penn & Teller Go Public” and numerous subsequent TV appearances.
1985 was a big year for them as it was also the first time one of them did a scripted role.

It’s no surprise that it was Penn Jillette, the one who does the talking on stage (Teller, who never gives his first name, is almost entirely silent during their shows). Jillette guested in the secondseason premiere of “Miami Vice,” pretty well the hottest show on TV at the time, playing a smalltime criminal named Jimmy Borges.
Oddly, “Miami Vice” was also Teller’s entree into the scripted world. He played a lawyer representing a corrupt music-biz executive in a Season 4 episode in 1987.
They’ve done a few more over the years. For example, also in 1987, Jillette appeared in the big-screen dramedy “Tough Guys Don’t Dance,” and a few years later in the 1995 action movie “Hackers.” Teller popped up in the 2012 film “Atlas Shrugged II: The Strike,” and in 2018, did a brief arc in Season 12 of “The Big Bang Theory.”
When they “act” together, it’s almost always as parodies or references to their real-world personas, such as in a 1998 episode of the sci-fi show “Babylon 5,” where they played a similar duo called Rebo and Zooty.
Q: Is Dan Brown going to do more “The Lost Symbol”?
A: There won’t be any more of Peacock’s “The Lost Symbol,” though it doesn’t look like author Dan Brown had much to do with that decision.
“The Lost Symbol” took Brown’s novel of the same name, the third in the series featuring globe-trotting symbologist Robert Langdon, and turned it into a prequel, showing a younger ver-
sion of the character who would become famous through the hit book, and 2006 movie, “The Da Vinci Code.”
Peacock canceled the series after one season in 2021, saying it had told the novel’s complete story. However, it just so happened that the show underperformed in the ratings and was presumably expensive to make.
But if it had been a hit, Peacock could have continued on. There are six books in Brown’s series. Three have already been adapted to the screen — “The Da Vinci Code” in 2006; “Angels & Demons” in 2009; and “Inferno” in 2016 — but that leaves two more yet to be filmed — “Origins” and “The Secret of Secrets,” though the latter was published four years after “The Lost Symbol” was canceled — that could have been drawn on for plots.
But the world is still hungry for Dan Brown content. Last year, Netflix took out an option for film version of “The Secret of Secrets,” though not much is known about that, except that “Lost” co-creator Carlton Cuse is involved.
Meanwhile, Brown himself is still writing, if his Instagram is anything to go by. He’s shared a couple of “still writing” posts in the past few months, in between promoting “The Secret of Secrets,” which is not yet a year old.
