AThere goes ‘The Neighborhood’ Butlers, Johnsons say goodbye in series finale
fter seven years of sitting in on neighborly squabbles, family celebrations, devastating heartaches and more, fans of “The Neighborhood” must finally bid adieu to the popular CBS series and its titular neighbors.
Having first aired on the ViacomCBS (now Paramount Global) owned network in October 2018, “The Neighborhood” boasts 155 episodes across eight seasons for a grand total of nearly two-and-a-half straight days of hilarious and heartwarming visual entertainment. Additionally, just last month, on April 6, CBS hosted an emotional farewell special, which — like all 155 episodes — remains available to stream on Paramount+.
But before you jump over to the streaming service to start the series over again from the top, don’t miss the finale, in which Dave (Max Greenfield, “New Girl”) and his begrudging bestie Calvin (Cedric the Entertainer, “Barbershop,” 2002) get vulnerable for a final time before they — and their families — step into the next phase of their lives.
The series finale of “The Neighborhood” airs Monday, May 11, on CBS and the Paramount+ streaming service.
As TV fans can attest, there are many ways to end a series. One of the most iconic series finales in television history is that of “Friends,” titled “The Last One,” which aired on NBC May 6, 2004. After 10 seasons on air, the hour-long series conclusion drew more than 50 million viewers, all of whom looked on (many through tears) as Rachel (Jennifer Aniston, “The Morning Show”), Ross (David Schwimmer, “Band of Brothers”), Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow, “The Comeback”), Joey (Matt LeBlanc, “Episodes”), Monica (Courteney Cox, “Scream,” 1996) and Chandler (late Canadian actor Matthew Perry, “The Whole Nine Yards,” 2000) — the latter couple holding their newborn twins — take turns laying their keys upon the counter of their now empty (and very famous) purple apartment.
But “The Neighborhood” co-showrunners Mike Schiff and Bill Martin (who both also served as producers for “3rd Rock from the Sun”) had a different series in mind as their idea of a perfect sitcom ending.
“We want a victory lap that feels intimate, not bloated,” Schiff told TV Line at the start of the show’s eighth and final season last October, adding that “finales often go wrong when they get too big.”
“To me,” Schiff continued, “the gold standard is ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show,’ which was just a half hour where everybody gets fired, they all sing ‘It’s a Long Way to Tipperary,’
and we cry, and she turns off the lights. That’s the kind of emotional resonance we want.”
As for the details of “The Neighborhood’s” final episode, Schiff and Martin have kept fairly tight-lipped. What we do know is that the Butler family is expanding as both Marty (Marcel Spears, “The Mayor”) and Courtney (Skye Townsend, “A Black Lady Sketch Show”) and Malcolm (Sheaun McKinney, “Vice Principals”) and Mercedes (Amber Stevens West, “22 Jump Street,” 2014) tie the knot in the final episode. While a double wedding is a lot for any family to manage (and costly to boot!), the Butlers appear to be looking forward to making the most of their truly empty nest.
The Johnsons, meanwhile, have their own brand of excitement brewing. Rumor has it that Dave, Gemma (Beth Behrs, “2 Broke Girls”) and their now teenaged son Grover (Hank Greenspan, “Ethan Bloom”) are packing up and leaving the neighborhood altogether for a new opportunity.
As avid series followers may recall from the
Season 8 premiere, Dave lost his job and has been searching for the right new vocation ever since. With Grover set to start high school and Gemma having already followed her dream job (that’s what brought them to Pasadena, California, in the pilot, you’ll remember), there appears to be no better time for Dave to accept an incoming offer and relocate with his family yet again.
And although saying goodbye is never easy, Behrs and her co-star Tichina Arnold (“Everybody Hates Chris”), who plays Tina Butler, were among the first of the cast to take to social media and give their sincere thanks to CBS, “The Neighborhood” and all the viewers who made the show such a lasting success.
“Playing Gemma for eight years — through marriage, global pandemics, two strikes, motherhood and all the other bits of life — has been an absolute gift, and that is thanks to this incredible cast and crew,” Behrs wrote on her Instagram (@bethbehrs). “Laughing with you every single day has brought me immense joy.
And thank you to all of you who watched us on CBS all these years. We are so grateful! THAT’S A WRAP!”
Likewise, Arnold (@tichinaarnold) posted a heartfelt moment during her last day with her castmates on set, pairing it with the caption, “This day is bittersweet…yet I am so Grateful. Thank you all for rocking with us. We could not have done this 8 year beautiful journey without YOU.”
But the journey isn’t over just yet. Tune in for “The Neighborhood’s” final farewell Monday, May 11, on CBS. The finale, as well as all over 154 episodes of the series, are also available to stream on Paramount+.

Streaming spinoff ‘Dutton Ranch’ settles in South Texas

Good fences make good neighbors. A literal interpretation of that line from Robert Frost’s 1914 poem “Mending Wall” has become a popular idiom, though it reads as ironic in the poem itself, questioning the purpose of borders. In a state like Texas, where land ownership is so much a part of the culture (over 93% of the state is privately owned, according to Texas Parks & Wildlife), there is only room for the literal interpretation.
Fan-favorite drama “Yellowstone” helped put Paramount+ on the map and told the story of the Dutton ranching dynasty over five seasons, ending with its series finale in 2024. It was the show that started the expansive partnership between series creator, writer and director Taylor Sheridan (“Sicario,” 2015) and the streamer, which now hosts the four existing series in the Yellowstone franchise, six additional scripted shows, the 2023 thriller film “Finestkind” and the country music reality competition series “The Road,” all from Sheridan. Now, the fifth “Yellowstone” spinoff says so long to Montana and hello to the Lone Star State.
Kelly Reilly (“True Detective”) and Cole Hauser (“The Lizzie Borden Chronicles”) reprise their “Yellowstone” roles as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler in “Dutton Ranch,” a brand-new nineepisode Western drama premiering Friday, May 15, on Paramount+. Two episodes will be available to stream on premiere day with weekly episodes following each Friday. The infamous lovebirds have landed in South Texas with their adopted son, Carter (Finn Little, “Reckoning”), and are ready to start working their 7,000-acre titular ranch.
According to Paramount+, Beth and Rip “collide with brutal new realities and a ruthless rival ranch that will stop at nothing to protect its empire. In South Texas, blood runs deeper, forgiveness is fleeting and the cost of survival might just be your soul.” If anyone from the Yellowstone universe was made to thrive in a cutthroat environment like that, it would be Beth, but that doesn’t mean that her and Rip will have it easy.
Now that they are the newcomers settling in amongst longtime land owners, Beth and Rip might just be about to learn what it felt like to find yourself on the wrong side of the Dutton family back in Montana. Ed Harris (“Love Lies Bleeding,” 2024) and Annette Bening (“Nyad,” 2023) star as Everett McKinney and Beulah Jackson, a couple of Texans in Beth and Rip’s orbit. While there isn’t much official information about Everett and Beulah yet, the trailer and stills offer a little insight into the roles inhabited by two Hollywood movie stars. “A legacy is a beautiful thing,” Beth tells her, “but only if it survives.” Leveling some threats over whiskey is nothing unusual for the fiery Beth we know, so it’s no surprise that she’s brought her management style with her to Texas. It is not as revealing as Beulah’s face off with Beth in regards to where he stands with the Dutton Ranch folks, but Everett reveals via his cap that he is a Vietnam Navy vet, a member of a helicopter squadron nicknamed the Seawolves.
Also starring in “Dutton Ranch” are Juan Pablo Raba (“Delirium”) as Joaquin; Jai Courtney (“American Primeval”) as Rob-Will; J.R. Villarreal (“Landman”) as Azul; Marc Menchaca (“Dexter: Resurrection”) as Zachariah; and Natalie Alyn Lind (“The Goldbergs”) as Oreana. Additionally, two actors were recently announced as recurring characters: Berto Colón (“The Penguin”) will appear as Miguel, a cowboy with quiet strength, while Hart Denton (“Riverdale”) will portray Chet, an employee of Dutton Ranch’s rival.
Sheridan serves as executive producer of “Dutton Ranch,” with a writing credit for creating the Yellowstone franchise characters continuing the saga in the new series. Chad Feehan (“Ray Donovan”) is showrunner, executive producer and writer of “Dutton Ranch.” Episode writers include Hayley Tibbenham (“Inhuman,” 2019), Hilary Bettis (“The Dropout”), Sean Conway (“We Are Who We Are”), J. Todd Scott (“Lawmen: Bass Reeves”) and Jacob Forman (“Uglies,” 2024).
Christina Alexandra Voros (“Ma,” 2019) is one of the executive producers of “Dutton Ranch” and directed multiple episodes, including the premiere and season finale. Greg Yaitanes (“Presumed Innocent”), Jessica Lowrey (“The Madness”) and Phil Abraham (“FUBAR”) also directed episodes of the debut season. John Linson (“The Outsider,” 2018), David C. Glasser (“MobLand”), Art Linson (“Sons of Anarchy”), Ron Burkle (“Mr. Scorsese”), David Hutkin (“The Agency”), Bob Yari (“Deep Water,” 2026), Michael Friedman (“Lioness”), Keith Cox (“Hot in Cleveland”), Hauser and Reilly all executive produce.

“Chopped” meets “Survivor” in the all-new series “Chopped Castaways,” making its debut Tuesday, May 12, on Food Network.
With eight episodes set to premiere weekly, this brandnew series sends elite chefs to a remote island, where their survival skills prove to be just as critical as their skills in the kitchen. While utilizing the essential ingredients of “Chopped” — such as mystery ingredients, strategic gameplay, impressive judges and “Chopped’s” very own host, Ted Allen — this tropical iteration of the beloved series offers a few spicy twists of its own.
“Battling the elements across two grueling cooking
rounds each week, competitors must build a working kitchen from basic supplies, earn their signature Chopped ingredient baskets through intense physical challenges and cook entirely over open fire,” reads Food Network’s official synopsis. “Each episode opens with survival-driven physical challenges — such as archery, spearfishing, diving in the ocean and digging in the sand — to secure ingredients for Round 1.” It continues: “The season begins as a team competition before dissolving into an individual battle, raising the stakes as the chefs fight to outlast their rivals and claim the $100,000 grand prize. Only the most resilient, strategic and adaptive chef will survive island life and the pressure of the competition.”

Starring Ella Bright (“The Crown”) and Belmont Cameli (“Saved by the Bell”), “Off Campus” leaps off the pages of Elle Kennedy’s (“Us”) best-selling novel “The Deal” and lands on Prime Video when the first season arrives Wednesday, May 13. Created for television by Louisa Levy (“In the Dark”), the college-set drama follows an elite Briar University hockey team as they grapple with love, heartbreak and the growing pains that come with finding yourself during your college years. At its center are two students who don’t quite make sense on paper. There’s Garrett (Cameli), the hockey team’s star player who lives for the chanting of the crowd in the stands, and Hannah (Bright), a quiet songwriter
who keeps her world tucked inside the pages of her journal. When their paths cross, an unexpected romance begins to take shape — one that pushes them to rethink their plans and changes them both in ways neither ever expected. Mika Abdalla (“Sex Appeal,” 2022), Antonio Cipriano (“Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin”), Jalen Thomas Brooks (“The Pitt”), Josh Heuston (“Dune: Prophecy”) and Stephen Kalyn (“Gen V”) round out the cast. “Pop Culture Jeopardy!” - Season 2
If you can name every Taylor Swift (“The Fate of Ophelia”) Easter egg but couldn’t solve a math problem to save your life, this one’s for you. Starting Monday, May 11, the popular quiz show “Pop Culture Jeopardy!” — hosted by comedian Colin Jost (“Saturday Night Live”) — will air on Netflix every weekday through June 5. The series puts a twist on the classic “Jeopardy!” format as contestants test their pop culture knowledge in TV, movies and music, with categories including “Horror Made Wholesome,” “Bummer Movie Endings” and everything in between. Teams survive or go home, week after week, until the five longest-winning-streak teams face off in a final tournament for a $300,000 cash
prize. Michael Davies (“Jeopardy!”) and Bari Jean Dorman (“Who Wants to be a Millionaire”) return as executive producers.
“Everyone Is Doing Great” - Season 1
The cameras stopped rolling five years ago, but nobody told Seth and Jeremy that. Starring James Lafferty (“One Tree Hill”) and Stephen Colletti (“Laguna Beach”) — who also created the series — “Everyone Is Doing Great” is available to stream Monday, May 11, on Netflix. The series follows Seth (Colletti) and Jeremy (Lafferty), two actors who once starred in “Eternal,” a beloved teen vampire drama that was a massive television hit among its audience. Five years after the finale aired, the world has moved on. However, Seth and Jeremy are still catching up, leaning on each other as they chase relevance in a Hollywood that’s already looking the other way. Q: I was recently reminded how much I loved “Gargoyles” from the 1990s, and I had forgotten how unique the voice of Goliath was. Is that actor still around?
A: For a kids show that only ran three seasons three decades ago, “Gargoyles” seems to still have a hold on the cultural imagination. And the rumbling earthquake of Keith David’s (“The Thing,” 1982) voice, as head gargoyle Goliath, was a big part of its appeal.
David has been a highly respected character actor and go-to voice star for decades, and he remains so today.
He’s already been in four projects this year alone — a chief support in the crime-comedy film “Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice,” a role in a couple of episodes of the Amazon series “The Gray House” and voice roles in the cartoons-forgrownups “Strip Law” and “Krapopolis.”
He has more than 400 roles on his resume, and yet “Gargoyles,” which ran way back in 1994 on Fox, still gets mentioned. For example, when the news broke last year that David was getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, multiple articles referenced it as one of his most “iconic” roles.
As usual, David has a number of projects on the go at the moment. Most notably, perhaps, he has the co-lead in the upcoming indie comedy film “My New Friend Jim” (as the title character), about two very different fathers who “form an unlikely bond while searching for a runaway daughter in Reno” — the other father is being
played by screen great Rob Lowe (“St. Elmo’s Fire,” 1985).
Q: Are the Russo brothers doing more “Gray Man” movies?
A: It’s not a definitive “no,” but the latest news of the long-discussed sequel to 2022’s “The Gray Man” is not encouraging.
“There isn’t any momentum news right now,” Anthony Russo said to ScreenRant.com in February. But on the other hand, he also said that “there are definitely a lot of people still thinking about it.”
Anthony Russo is, of course, one half of a
blockbuster filmmaking duo with his brother Joe. Since they started cranking out moneyprinting Marvel movies — starting with “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” in 2014 — people have wanted to be in business with the Russo brothers.
That certainly seemed to be Netflix’s plan with 2022’s “The Gray Man.” Based on a longrunning book series (author Mark Greaney has penned 15 Gray Man titles so far) and with two huge Hollywood stars in the co-lead roles (Ryan Gosling, “Drive,” 2011; and Chris Evans of the aforementioned “Captain America” and other Marvel films), “The Gray Man” was clearly intended to launch an action franchise with the Russos at the helm.
But here we are, four years later, and all we have are “people still thinking about it.”
That might have less to do with interest and more to do with scheduling. The Russos, Evans and Gosling are four of the most in-demand people in Hollywood — bringing them together for a meeting, let alone a multi-month film shoot, would be enough to send a team of assistants on stress leave.
Among the many projects keeping the Russo brothers busy at the moment, the most notable is “Avengers: Doomsday,” their first Marvel movie since 2019’s “Endgame.” It’s due out in December.
They’re also producing the upcoming crime drama “The Whisper Man,” due out later this year — I mention this to dispel any disappoint-
ment in advance, as it is not in any way related to “The Gray Man.”
Q: Is William Shatner still acting? Is he ever going to retire?
A: TV legend William Shatner (“Star Trek”) has shown no signs of wanting to retire. Indeed, at age 93, he literally scoffed at the idea recently. Last year, he posted news on his Instagram feed (yes, William Shatner has an Instagram feed — I was as surprised as you) that he had received a lifetime-achievement award from the Saturn Awards. “I’m wondering if that’s a subtle hint to retire,” he wrote, followed by a string of emojis that suggested he found the idea ridiculous.
And his actions bear that out. He’s still the fulltime host and executive producer of “The UnXplained,” a History Channel docuseries about “the world’s most fascinating, strange and inexplicable mysteries” — Season 8 debuted in February.
And he pops up from time to time on other shows as well. He was a guest on “Piers Morgan Uncensored” last month and in the feel-good reality show “Celebrity IOU” in January. He’s even working on a new movie, “Family Tree,” an independently produced holiday comedy that is at least aiming for release this December (it’s never a guarantee with indies).
