Keeley Hawes (“Line of Duty”) stars as author Jane Austen’s sister Cassandra in “Miss Austen,” premiering on Masterpiece on PBS Sunday, May 4. Largely considered by Austen fans to have been a villain in the author’s life, Cassandra is responsible for burning more than 2,800 of Jane’s letters in order to protect their family’s privacy. Synnove Karlsen (“Last Night in Soho,” 2021) and Patsy Ferran (“God’s Own Country,” 2017) co-star.

In the literary world, the name Austen typically invokes images of women in billowing attire atop a breezy English cliff or traversing a John Constableworthy pastoral landscape with book in hand, perhaps unwilling to — but about to — meet her true love. From 1811’s “Sense and Sensibility” to 1817’s “Persuasion,” author Jane Austen wrote some of the English language’s best and most recognized novels of all time — but she also completed plenty of unpublished works, perhaps most famously a collection of letters fated to burn at the hand of her elder sister, Cassandra.
In the BBC series “Miss Austen,” coming to Masterpiece on PBS Sunday, May 4, showrunner and director Aisling Walsh (“Maudie,” 2016) pairs with screenwriter Andrea Gibb (“Call the Midwife”) for a dramatic retelling of author Gill Hornby’s third novel, also called “Miss Austen,” which explores the love, frustration and competition between the Austen sisters.
The four-part series, first released in the U.K. in February of this year, stars Keeley Hawes (“Line of Duty”) as Cassandra Austen, with Synnove Karlsen (“Last Night in Soho,” 2021) and Patsy Ferran (“God’s Own Country,” 2017) portraying young Cassy and Jane Austen, respectively. To whom the title of “Miss Austen” applies, however, is left to the viewers’ discretion (the remaining six Austen siblings are male), but author Hornby’s intentions are clear: Cassandra is the heroine of this particular tale.
According to the PBS Masterpiece press description, “’Miss Austen’ takes a historic literary mystery — the notorious burning of Jane Austen’s letters by her sister Cassandra — and reimagines it as a fascinating, witty and heartbreaking story of sisterly love, while creating in Cassandra a character as captivating as any Austen heroine.
“Based on Gill Hornby’s bestselling novel,” the explanation continues, “this period drama
The other ‘Miss Austen’ Miniseries focuses on love and loathe of literary sisters
brings a fresh and intimate perspective to the Austen sisters’ lives — their joys, heartaches, and the passions that would shape Jane’s iconic novels.”
While Hornby’s novel debuted in 2020, the series was adapted for a 2025 release as a special way of marking the year Jane Austen would have turned 250 years old. But while Jane is, of course, a huge part of the reason Hornby began writing, the true heroine of “Miss Austen” is Cassandra, Jane’s oftoverlooked older sister.
Ahead of the release of “Miss Austen” on BBC One, Hornby was interviewed by The Guardian, noting, “I always feel that we who like Jane’s novels should be on our knees in gratitude for all of the good Cassandra did. Jane was a fragile person and fragile people need their wingman, and that is who [Cassandra] was.
“I’m haunted by women in history who had their destinies and then had to live on their wits when things went wrong,” Hornby stated later in the interview. And that wit — as great writing and acting would have it — is one of the Austen sisters’ many personality traits that is masterfully captured in the BBC miniseries.
In a Guardian review by reporter Lucy Mangan on the day the series premiered across the pond, the series earned four stars out of five, with Mangan praising “this absolute treat of a period drama” for the “unshowy magnificence” of its performances; chiefly that of leading lady Hawes, who sympathetically portrays the supposed villain in the widely accepted history of Jane Austen’s life and work. Ultimately, viewers come to learn what many may have already suspected, that Cassandra “destroyed almost all her vast collection of her sister’s correspondence to protect her and the family’s reputation and privacy.” Neither done of malice nor of jealousy or spite, Cassandra’s well-orchestrated purge diminished the number of letters from an estimated 3,000 to approximately 160 that were “mostly given to other family members as mementoes.”
As for the complicating matters that have been woven into the fabric of the Austen sisters’ tale,
that is something viewers will delight in uncovering across each of “Miss Austen’s” four hour-long episodes.
Boasting a sizable and well-respected cast as the Austen family and various friends and neighbors, “Miss Austen” stars Alfred Enoch (“How to Get Away with Murder”), Liv Hill (“The Little Stranger,” 2018), Jessica Hynes (“The Royle Family”), Rose Leslie (“Game of Thrones”), Phyllis Logan (“Downton Abbey”), Max Irons (“The Wife,” 2017), Mirren Mack (“The Doll Factory”), Kevin McNally (“Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl,” 2003), Clare Foster (“The ExWife”), Carys Bowkett (“The Suspect”), Calam Lynch (“Sweetpea”) and rising talent Ruby Richardson (“The Crown”).
to draw fans of the author from across the globe with this stateside release, Hawes told the U.K.’s House and Garden magazine that those unfamiliar with Austen’s biography still have plenty to love about this new series.
Although “Miss Austen” is sure
“I was sent the first episode of ‘Miss Austen’ knowing nothing at all about this story, and instantly I found it absolutely fascinating and charming,” Hawes told writer
Evie Delaney in late January 2025. “I think people will love it, because for anyone who is not aware of this backstory it’s almost like we are getting a new Jane Austen story in itself, and what a lovely surprise that is.” Don’t miss the North American premiere of “Miss Austen” when it airs Sunday, May 4, on PBS’s Masterpiece. Stars on screen

Casting Miss Bennet: It is a truth universally acknowledged that fans of “Pride and Prejudice” must be in want of a new adaptation every few years (that seems to be the assumption and trend, anyway).
As previously reported, Netflix is working on a new period-faithful adaptation of Jane Austen’s most famous literary contribution, with author Dolly Alderton (“Everything I Know About Love”) teaming up with director Euros Lyn (“Heartstopper,” 2022) to bring the story to the screen once again — this time as a six-part limited series that closely follows the original text, which makes no mention of a quick dip in the pond at Pemberley.
“Once in a generation, a group of people get to retell this wonderful story, and I feel very lucky that I get to be a part of it,” Alderton said in an official statement. “Jane Austen’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’ is the blueprint for romantic comedy — it has been a joy to delve back into its pages to find both familiar and fresh ways of bringing this beloved book to life. The book is a gift to adapt — packed with drama and depth as well as comedy and charm. In it lies the opportunity to examine
the complexities of love, family, friendship and society, while aspiring to Austen’s delightfully observational voice. With Euros Lyn directing our stellar cast, I am so excited to reintroduce these hilarious and complicated characters to those who count ‘Pride and Prejudice’ as their favorite book, and those who are yet to meet their Lizzie and Mr Darcy.”
Speaking of “stellar cast,” we now know who will be portraying some of the story’s key characters.
Playing the part of Miss Elizabeth Bennet is Golden Globe winner Emma Corrin (“The Crown”), while the other half of the main “Pride and Prejudice” duo, Mr. Darcy, will be played by BAFTA winner Jack Lowden (“Slow Horses”).
Corrin, who portrayed Princess Diana in “The Crown,” will be reunited with their former co-star Olivia Colman (who portrayed Queen Elizabeth II in Seasons 3 and 4), who is stepping into the role of Mrs. Bennet, the oft-ridiculed matriarch.
“Playing Elizabeth Bennet is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Corrin. “To be able to bring this iconic character to life, alongside Olivia and Jack, with Dolly’s phenomenal scripts is truly the greatest honor. I can’t wait for a new generation to fall in love with this story all over again.”

For the love of food
Vaughn builds a restaurant around family recipes in ‘Nonnas’
By Sarah Passingham TV Media
Tutti a tavola a mangiare!
Celebrate Mother’s Day this year with a reservation at “Nonnas.” Vince Vaughn (“Bad Monkey”) stars in the heartwarming new Netflix film, premiering Friday, May 9, as a man whose grief sparks inspiration for a unique restaurant concept.
Following the deaths of his mother and grandmother, Staten Island resident Joe Scaravella (Vaughn) is overcome with fond memories of the time he shared with them in the kitchen throughout his life.
Losing someone dear to you forces you to find a way to share the love that would have gone their way, and Joe wants to pour his into a passion project fit for a foodie. The loss gives Joe a new purpose in life, and he leaves behind his deadend job at the MTA to pursue his new dream of opening an Italian restaurant with chefs that feel like family.
Rather than recruiting hotshot New York City dining scene chefs from across the bay, Joe finds four Italian grandmothers, or “nonnas,” from the neighborhood to staff his kitchen. They all work together to develop a menu for Enoteca Maria in time for it to open its doors and welcome the community with real comfort food.
Roberta (Lorraine Bracco, “Rizzoli & Isles”) was Joe’s mother’s best friend and is the first one to sign up to join him in the kitchen. Antonella (Brenda Vaccaro, “And Just Like That...”) brings her Bolognian recipes to the table, former nun Teresa (Talia Shire, “Grace and Frankie”) has as many stories as she has recipes to share and Gia (Susan Sarandon, “Monarch”), another of Joe’s mom’s friends, becomes the pastry chef of Enoteca Maria.
The four nonnas of Enoteca Maria collaborate and contend with each other as they prepare for the restaurant’s grand opening. Sometimes, the ladies must take a break from recipe development to bicker over re-
gional dishes or Sicily vs. Italy, but in the end, they are all there to share and work together.
Anyone who has ever worked in a restaurant knows that the kitchen is hardly the half of it. With his chefs taken care of, Joe turns to friends to get the rest of the operation rolling. Joe’s childhood friend Bruno (Joe Manganiello, “True Blood”) is not only supportive of his buddy’s dream, he is also a contractor willing to pitch in to help build the restaurant.
Linda Cardellini (“Dead to Me”) stars as Olivia. Having been stood up years ago by Joe on prom night, Olivia reconnects with her former flame after a serendipitous meeting at an Italian market. A first-year law student, Olivia helps Joe with the legal aspects of setting up his new business.
Joe’s put a lot on the line to make his dream happen, as he stresses over a montage of clips in the film’s official trailer, saying, “It has to work, ‘cause it’s not just a restaurant. It’s more about family, especially for people who may not have family anymore.” He’s sunk his mother’s insurance money into the restaurant and cashed in all the favors he was owed, just to share some of the love he felt sitting down to a homecooked meal.
Also starring in “Nonnas” are Drea de Matteo (“Paradise City”) as Stella; Michael Rispoli (“The Alto Knights,” 2025) as Al; Richie Moriarty (“Ghosts”) as Joe’s dull MTA co-worker Dan McClane; and Campbell
Screen Scramble
Scott (“Colosseum”) as Edward Durant.
“Nonnas” is based on the real-life story of restaurateur Joe Scaravella, who, in 2007, opened Enoteca Maria on Staten Island. In a 2023 interview with People, Scaravella shared that he established the restaurant “to recreate that part of my life that was gone. This is like therapy for me.”
The author of the 2015 cookbook “Nonna’s House” spoke about the 30 grandmothers from countries all over the world, no longer just Italian nonnas, who were in the chef rotation at the time, saying, “They’re so full of love, they hug me and they hug the customers.”
“Nonnas” is directed by Stephen Chbosky (“Dear Evan Hansen,” 2021), whose 1999 novel, “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” was adapted into a feature film in 2012. “Once again, Stephen Chbosky has brought magic to the screen in a heartfelt and joyous film,” said Christopher Slager (“Friendship,” 2024), head of film at Fifth Season, the studio behind the film.
Liz Maccie, the writer behind over 20 episodes of The CW supernatural thriller series “Siren,” wrote the screenplay for “Nonnas.” If this film could get even more heartening, Maccie and Chbosky are married, with the upcoming film being their first professional collaboration. Pull a chair up to the “Nonnas” table and check out the touching new film when it premieres Friday, May 9, on Netflix.

After a decade of serving up some of the best culinary content around, the Emmy-nominated docuseries “Chef’s Table” has returned for an epic celebratory season. Produced by creator David Gelb’s (“Jiro Dreams of Sushi,” 2011) Planetarium and Boardwalk Pictures, “Chef’s Table: Legends” is now available to stream on Netflix.
According to the streamer, “Legends,” the series’ eighth season, features a “star-studded lineup whose influence has transcended borders (and mediums) and inspired generations of cooks and food lovers alike,” continuing the series’ tradition of highlighting one uniquely talented chef per episode.
“They are icons that should need no introduction,” explains
the “Chef’s Table” production team, “and yet we found ourselves alternately surprised and enthralled by the vulnerability, the intimacy and the previously untold stories that they shared with us.”
The episodes in question — four in total — are set to delve into the culinary prowess of chefs Jamie Oliver (“The Naked Chef”), José Andrés (“Yes, Chef!”), Thomas Keller (“Fine Food and Film: A Conversation with Brad Bird and Thomas Keller,” 2007) and Alice Waters (“Food and Country,” 2023). The first and fourth episodes will be directed by Brian McGinn (“Street Food: USA”) and Gelb, respectively, with Clay Jeter (“From Scratch”) directing episodes 2 and 3, discussing the chefs’ styles, specialties and backgrounds.
Fine Dining Lovers — a foodie magazine produced by S. Pellegrino — spoke with Gelb regarding
the release of this landmark season, discussing the passion that permeates every episode of “Chef’s Table,” making itself especially apparent in “Legends.”
“We were the first original doc series on the platform,” Gelb said, “and it was a gamble. But we believed in this idea that chefs were more than just technicians. They’re artists. They’re obsessed.
“Anyone with a passion that strong can be inspiring. Even if it’s a hot dog vendor outside the Met. It’s about what they give up for it. That’s the universal theme,” he adds.
Since its debut, “Chef’s Table” has given a voice to countless culinary masterminds, including chef Christina Tosi, who later in the article explains that the series “offered a way to articulate what Cool Whip containers and childhood memories and unapologetic joy actually mean when translated into a slice of cake.”
Susan Sarandon, Talia Shire, Vince Vaughn, Brenda Vaccaro and Lorraine Bracco star in “Nonnas”

Q: Is it true Jeremy Irons didn’t do his own singing as Scar in “The Lion King”?
A: No, it’s not true. At least, not entirely.
Jeremy Irons (“Dead Ringers,” 1988) voiced the villainous, throne-thieving Scar in Disney’s 1994 classic “The Lion King.” And, as is usually the case with Disney movies, that involved some singing.
Scar has one big musical number, “Be Prepared,” which is there to explain his plan to take over the lion pride.
Unfortunately, Irons reportedly hurt his vocal cords during the recording. His co-star, veteran voice actor Jim Cummings (“Winnie the Pooh,” 2011), had to step in.
“Jeremy developed vocal problems while he was recording that number for ‘The Lion King,’” Cummings told The Huffington Post in 2011. “So the producers asked me to come in and replace Mr. Irons. Sing the last third of ‘Be Prepared’ in his place.”
Indeed, the 2017 Blu-ray release of the film includes footage of the recording, including of Irons singing the first and second verses but, notably, not the third.
Irons is actually credited with singing two songs in the film. At another point in the story, he sings a few bars of the 1944 novelty song “I’ve Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts.” But that one’s just a
quick little joke midway through the film rather than a proper musical number.
Q: Why was there such a long break between seasons of “Say Yes to the Dress”? Is Randy planning to leave the show?
A: Given that he called the show “an addiction” ahead of the Season 23 premiere in April, I don’t think star and designer Randy Fenoli is planning to go anywhere.
“I’ve been doing this 32 years, and I get so excited,” Fenoli told People magazine. “It’s kind of silly, it’s almost like an addiction for me. It truly is.”
Note that, when he says 32 years, he’s referring to his career in the bridal biz — the show itself has only been on since 2007. And if you do the math there (23 seasons in 18 years), you’ll see that a two-year hiatus for the show is unprecedented. Indeed, there was often less than a year between installments.
But Fenoli offered no explanation for the break. It’s not as if he was focusing on other priorities in the meantime — he’s still a designer who consults at Kleinfeld Bridal, where “Say Yes to the Dress” is filmed, and who runs his own house, Randy Fenoli Bridal. It’s a job that doesn’t offer hiatuses.
Between “Say Yes” seasons, he’s been touring the world doing trunk shows and fashion shows to bring his designs to more people. That idea of reach is also what keeps him excited about doing the show, he told People. But now, after 23 seasons, it’s also a reach across time.
“These little girls that watch the show, they’re now married, and maybe had their little girls, so I think it’s going to be a whole new generation.”
Q: I really loved the Tilly character on “Star Trek: Discovery.” What’s that actress doing now?
A: After the surprise cancelation of “Star Trek: Discovery,” Mary Wiseman (who played the endlessly optimistic Sylvia Tilly across all five seasons) dove straight into another buzzy
ery,” went from being a cadet to becoming a professor at Starfleet Academy.
In hindsight, it seems that this character arc was designed to prepare her way to join the latest “Star Trek” spinoff. The new show, “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy,” is set at the school, where new trekkers of the stars are trained.
In fact, Wiseman’s character was briefly written off of “Discovery,” with the explanation that she was leaving the crew to become a teacher. This was right

streaming series. But, in even better news for fans, she’s not done with her Sylvia Tilly character yet.
Wiseman was just seen as the fiery, brilliant White House chef Marvella in “The Residence,” a new Netflix mystery-comedy show. It was billed as an eight-episode limited series, but Netflix has shown in the past that it’s more than happy to revive something if there’s interest in a sequel.
Her “Residence” character — angry, capricious and prideful — couldn’t be further from her “Discovery” character, except in the ambition department. Marvella went from running a food truck to being executive chef at the White House, a job she takes very seriously. Whereas Tilly, on “Discov-
around the time they started work on “Starfleet Academy.”
Filming recently wrapped on the new show’s first season, though Paramount has yet to announce a release date.
Wiseman is part of a star-studded cast that also includes film stars Paul Giamatti (“Sideways,” 2004) and Holly Hunter (“The Piano,” 1993). “Star Trek: Discovery” fans will also be excited to know that the new show is also borrowing another character: Cmdr. Jett Reno (played by comedian Tig Notaro in “Discovery”) will appear in “Starfleet Academy” as well.
