“Date Night” (2010) co-stars Tina Fey and Steve Carell are among the cast of “The Four Seasons,” a comedy series about six friends who vacation together each season of the year, premiering Thursday, May 1, on Netflix. A reimagining of the 1981 Alan Alda (“M*A*S*H”) film of the same name, “The Four Seasons” also stars Colman Domingo (“Fear the Walking Dead”), Will Forte (“The Last Man on Earth”), Kerri Kenney-Silver (“Reno 911!”) and Marco Calvani (“Borgia”).

The intricacies of adult friendships have long fascinated the world of social studies due, in large part, to the levels of engagement and energy required to maintain a happy, successful relationship.

According to Jeffrey A. Hall, a University of Kansas communications studies professor and author of the 2019 article “How many hours does it take to make a friend?” in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, “although [a] good friendship can develop after spending 120–160 [hours] together over three weeks, 200+ [hours] is likely needed over six weeks for friends to become good/best friends.” Despite this, Americans, on average, typically “only spend about 41 [minutes] a day socializing.”

Needless to say, maintaining an existing adult friendship can be just as difficult when the pressures and responsibilities of daily life get in the way — a fact that presents itself, amid other realistic complications, in Netflix’s new buddy comedy series “The Four Seasons,” premiering Thursday, May 1, on the popular streaming service.

“The Four Seasons” follows a group of three couples who, amid all of life’s complications and curveballs, resolve to take a trip together each season of the year. But when one couple files for divorce, tensions rise within the friend group, and all their plans seem to fall by the wayside.

The series, comprised of eight episodes, takes heavy inspiration from the 1981 Alan Alda (“M*A*S*H”) written and directed film of the same name starring Carol Burnett (“The Carol Burnett Show”), Rita Moreno (“West Side Story,” 1961), Len Cariou (“Blue Bloods”), Jack Weston (“Wait Until Dark,” 1967), Sandy Dennis (“Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?,” 1966) and Alda himself.

The 1980s comedy-drama was relatively well received upon its release, with New York Times reviewer Janet Maslin praising the comfort of the film by writing that

“even the occasional confrontations ... have a soothing air.”

“No one in ‘The Four Seasons’ ever goes to bed angry,” Maslin continued in her 1981 article, adding, “and there’s no particular reason to want them to.”

And while the 2025 “Four Seasons” series manages to update the couples’ issues, interests and relationships with one another in a believable way across significantly more airtime, series star and co-creator Tina Fey (“Saturday Night Live”) says she and fellow creators Lang Fisher (“Never Have I Ever”) and Tracey Wigfield (“The Mindy Project”) have tried to maintain the same level of comfort in the reimagining as was provided by its source material.

“I hope audiences feel like they are inside a big sweater with us, and also having a dinner party with us,” Fey told Tudum ahead of the series release. “I hope that any of the joy and warmth that we all feel for each other all transfers to them, and that we are a comfort and provide some laughs for them in their home.”

“The Four Seasons” stars Colman Domingo (“Fear the Walking Dead”) as Danny, Will Forte (“The Last Man on Earth”) as Jack, Kerri Kenney-Silver (“Reno 911!”) as Anne, Marco Calvani (“Borgia”) as Claude and Fey as Kate, with her former “Date Night” (2010) co-star Steve Carell as Nick — a “perfect” cast, according to Calvani, who attributes their connection either to industry-based tal-

ent or “a mix of magic and luck” (per Tudum).

The series — Fey’s first in a starring role since “30 Rock” — dives into the emotion, allegiances and awkwardness that often goes hand-in-hand with long-term friendships, particularly those involving several couples. So when one of the three couples announces they are headed for divorce, the group’s existing dynamic is thrown into a tailspin and the remaining couples are left wondering how — or indeed if — they can pick up the pieces.

But when a seventh potential member, played by Erika Henningsen (“Girls5eva”), joins the group for their festivities, the friends’ well-planned vacation

evolves into truly interesting social experiment.

“It feels like these people have existed in each other’s lives for a long time,” Carell told Tudum during promotional interviews for the series, praising both the writing and the casting. “There’s a code, there’s an unspoken relationship that entwines all of them, and they speak the same language to each other. There’s a shorthand, and it’s funny.”

According to the Hollywood Reporter, “Netflix won a bidding war for the series (which was a hot commodity coming out of 2023’s labour strikes) and gave the show a straight-to-series order in early 2024.” And while it’s still too early to say with any certainty, “The Four Seasons” is ex-

pected to join other top-rated series, including Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” Disney+’s “Andor,” Netflix’s “Black Mirror,” and HBO’s “Hacks” and “The Last of Us,” as an Emmy contender for the 2024-25 season.

Fisher, Wigfield and Fey all serve as executive producers for the series alongside fellow “30 Rock” alums David Miner, Jeff Richmond and Eric Gurian. Alda, meanwhile, serves as co-producer with new behind-the-scenes talent Marissa Bregman, daughter of the 1981 film’s producer, Martin Bregman (“Dog Day Afternoon,” 1975).

Don’t miss your chance to make new friends when “The Four Seasons” premieres Thursday, May 1, on Netflix.

Stars on screen

Partners in crime (solving): For those who enjoyed Netflix’s “A Man on the Inside,” rest assured, a second season is coming — in fact, Season 2 was scheduled to begin production this month.

Want more good news? Oscar winner Mary Steenburgen (“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist”) will play a lead role in Season 2, joining her real-life husband and the series’ Golden Globe-nominated lead Ted Danson (“Cheers”) on screen.

The charming crime caper hails from creator and executive producer Mike Schur (“The Good Place”) and is based on the 2020 Chilean documentary feature “The Mole Agent” (“El agente topo”). It features Danson in the role of Charles, “a retired man who gets a new lease on life when he answers an ad from a PI and becomes a mole in a secret investigation,” according to the official logline.

The first season earned rave reviews from critics and audiences alike — the series has a 96% rating on the review site Rotten Tomatoes and was named one of AFI’s top programs of the year in 2024. Less than a month after its premiere, it was picked up for a second season that is slated for release later this year.

In this new season, Steenburgen appears as Mona Margadoff, “a former musician who factors heavily in the case Charles is trying to solve.” Just don’t expect a full return to Pacific View, the retirement home where Charles posed as a resident in the first season. The series is aiming for an anthology feel by focusing on a new case and, presumably, a new crime scene each season. In fact, Deadline’s sources have indicated Season 2 will be set at a liberal arts college — a setting that should be familiar to Charles given his profession as a college engineering professor, along with his role as a guest lecturer at the end of Season 1. Will sparks fly between Mona and Charles? We’ll have to wait and see, but the couple have certainly proved they’re capable of working well together onscreen, having played a couple in HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and a former couple in their short-lived 1996 CBS series “Ink.”

It’s worth noting that Steenburgen, who recently reprised her lead role in the 2023 sequel movie “Book Club: The Next Chapter,” has also put in a guest appearance on all of Danson’s recent TV series, from “Becker” to “The Good Place” and even “Mr. Mayor.”

Ending the first chapter Two freshman series air season finales

Two of this year’s biggest new shows end their debut seasons with a night of finales Monday, April 28, on CBS. Crime procedural spinoff “NCIS: Origins” and sitcom “Poppa’s House” both toast their first seasons with finale episodes that reveal hidden secrets.

“NCIS: Origins” promises a seriously drama-filled finale. Pedro Hernandez (George Paez, “Lopez vs. Lopez”) was someone that not even the specialized team of agents could find before Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Austin Stowell, “A Friend of the Family”) exacted his revenge, but in the season finale, his murder is on their radar and Gibbs starts to feel the pressure. Per CBS, “When [Gibbs] needs his team the most, the loyalty of one is brought into question.”

After a 19-season-long run leading a team for the Naval Criminal Investigative Service in the originating series, “NCIS,” Gibbs left that life behind for solace in Alaska. The franchise was not done, however, with telling Gibbs’ story, so “NCIS: Origins” was created.

Narrated by Mark Harmon (“Chasing Liberty,” 2004), who portrayed Gibbs in the original series, as well as in the two episodes of “JAG” that served as a test of concept for the series back in 2003, “NCIS: Origins” explores the early days of Gibbs’ career with the service. The police procedural follows a young Gibbs as he starts working as a probationary agent in the Naval Investigative Service in 1991.

Also starring in the series are Mariel Molino (“The Watchful Eye”) as special agent Cecilia “Lala” Dominguez; Kyle Schmid (“Big Sky”) as special agent Mike Franks; Tyla Abercrumbie (“The Chi”) as officer Mary Jo Hayes; Diany Rodriguez (“The Blacklist”) as special agent Vera Strickland; and Caleb Foote (“Made for Love”) as special agent Bernard “Randy” Randolf.

Stationed at the Camp Pendleton office, Gibbs begins what we know to be a very eventful career while he grieves the tragic deaths of his wife and daughter. A Gibbs

origin story, as fans of the NCIS franchise know, would undoubtedly start with the story behind those murders. As told throughout the originating series, before joining the NIS, Gibbs tracked down the man who killed them and killed him in retribution.

Meanwhile, the season finale of the family-centric sitcom “Poppa’s House” also promises a drama all its own among the laughs. After spending the season slowly warming up to his new radio show co-host, Poppa (Damon Wayans, “Lethal Weapon”) prepares to reveal a big secret to Ivy (Essence Atkins, “Marlon”), according to CBS, while Junior’s (Damon Wayans Jr., “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar,” 2021) wife, Nina (Tetona Jackson, “Good Trouble”), takes over behind the wheel of his latest short film.

Switching gears from drama to comedy, real-life father and son comedy duo Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr. team up as lovingly dysfunctional family members in “Poppa’s House.”

The Wayans family has made significant contributions to comedy on TV and film for almost four decades, from Keenen Ivory Wayans creating and hosting revolutionary sketch comedy show “In Living Color,” writing for and producing the 1987 stand-up comedy film “Eddie Murphy Raw,” to Keenen, Shawn and Marlon Wayans creating the Scary Movie parody film franchise and enduring 2004 comedy film “White Chicks.”

Damon created and starred in the ABC sitcom “My Wife and Kids,” which aired for five seasons from 2001 to 2005, while

Screen Scramble

Damon Jr. has had starring roles in modern sitcom classics such as “New Girl” and “Happy Endings.”

The elder Wayans stars in the series as Poppa, a successful New York City radio personality whose peaceful, solitary, post-divorce life gets shaken up when the station hires him a new co-host, psychologist Dr. Ivy Reed, while he still helps his adult son, Junior, navigate life.

Junior is a dreamer with big ideas, but sometimes he fails to hit the mark. After being laid off for missing a sales pitch in the series premiere, Junior is left with plenty of time to spend with his father, whether Poppa likes it or not.

Formerly employed by his father-in-law J.J. (Geoffrey Owens, “The Haves and the Have Nots”), Junior uses his unemployment as an opportunity to explore his real passion, directing documentary films.

With the help of his wife, Nina, an event planner, Junior takes off on his new career path. He starts with directing a documentary about Poppa’s legendary career in broadcasting and even picks up a commercial job for J.J.’s foam roller company.

While February saw “NCIS: Origins” get its Season 2 renewal order, joining its returning originating series and fellow spinoff “NCIS: Sydney,” “Poppa’s House” is still waiting on renewal news from CBS along with the action procedural “The Equalizer.”

Don’t miss season finale episodes of “NCIS” Origins” and “Poppa’s House” Monday, April 28, on CBS.

From hosts Martha Stewart (“The Martha Stewart Show”) and José Andrés (“Dinner Party Diaries with Jose Andres”), as well as the creators of “Top Chef,” comes a brand new, high-stakes cooking competition series. “Yes, Chef!” premieres Monday, April 28, on NBC, asking 12 professional chefs to realize their full potential.

According to a press release given by the network, “‘Yes, Chef!’ blends the high-stakes thrill of a cooking competition with the raw emotion of personal transformation as it delves into the powerful personalities attracted to the chaotic culinary lifestyle.”

Nominated by friends, family and co-workers, these culi-

nary masterminds — all displaying outstanding talent and steadfast egos to boot — must put their “intensity, stubbornness or short fuses” (per NBC) aside, proving to Martha and José that they have both the talent and the temperament to last in their friendlyfire competition.

Throughout the season, chefs will be guided through a series of intense challenges made to test their skills both in the kitchen and out, designed to target personal issues the chefs might display. Each episode is divided into two weekly challenges, with the first being a team exercise meant to scrutinize each team’s leadership skills. Afterwards, Martha and José then choose one chef from the winning team to be crowned as that episode’s “Most Valuable Chef.” This chef is then given

extra responsibilities — including big, game-changing decisions — and their input, time-management and leadership skills will either earn their team a win or will steer them straight to elimination.

“Asterix & Obelix: The Big Fight” (2025)

While the media considered Paez’s death “The Almost Perfect Crime,” according to Netflix, the case took a turn when Paez’s story begins to intermingle with those of Maria “Angi” Angeles Molina and her husband, Juan Antonio Alvarez Litben, who died unexpectedly in 1996. Q: I had a friend recommend a movie called “Man on a Ledge” starring Elizabeth Banks and Sam Worthington, but when I found it, it starred the guy from “Sons of Anarchy.” Are they different versions of the same movie?

A: What you were looking for was, indeed, “Man on a Ledge,” released in 2011. What you found was “The Ledge,” released in 2012. Whether they’re different versions of the same movie is up to you to decide.

In “Man on a Ledge,” police (including a negotiator played by Elizabeth Banks, “The Hunger Games,” 2012) try to stop a man (Sam Worthington, “Avatar,” 2009) from jumping off a window ledge in a hotel, while a jewelry heist is committed nearby. In “The Ledge,” one particular police officer (Terrence Howard, “Crash,” 2004) tries to stop a man (Charlie Hunnam, “Sons of Anarchy”) from jumping from a window ledge in a hotel, leading to an exploration of faith and the afterlife.

To be fair, if they’d been released a little further apart, their similarities wouldn’t seem so glaring. They would just be two more entries in the long list of stories that put a character out on a window ledge as a way to immediately raise stakes. (It’s also a very visual plot device — much of the thrill comes from the character’s

view over the edge into thin air — which is another reason Hollywood loves it so much.)

Worthington’s “Man on a Ledge” is a cops-and-robbers thriller that uses the character’s threat of jumping as part of a larger crime plot. Whereas Hunnam’s “The Ledge” is more interested in the philosophical repercussions of the act of suicide.

But they are both, ultimately, built around the same basic plot point, they were released a year apart and have very similar titles. So the confusion’s on the producers, not on you.

Q: I was just watching Jon Hamm’s new series and it got me wondering about the other “Mad Men” cast. What’s the guy who played Pete Campbell doing now?

A: The AMC drama “Mad Men” was a true 2000s cultural phenomenon — the kind of show people talked about the next morning. And so people expected a lot from the cast once the show ended in 2015.

The show’s main star, Jon Hamm, found success on the big screen in films such as 2017’s “Baby Driver,” and has now, as you say, returned to the small screen, in Apple TV+’s “Your Friends & Neighbors.” Other stars, like Elisabeth Moss (“The Invisible Man,” 2020) and Christina Hendricks (“The Neon Demon,” 2016) have been similarly busy. But what about Vincent Kartheiser (“Titans”), who played ambitious rich kid Pete Campbell?

He’s been just as busy as any of them, but struggled to find his big hit after “Mad Men” ended.

His biggest may have come almost immediately. He was nominated for a couple of awards for his lead role in the 2015 historical miniseries “Saints & Strangers,” which aired on the National Geographic Channel. Lengthy arcs on numerous other shows followed, including a four-episode run on the cult-favorite sci-fi show “The OA,” and a run as a congressman on the star-studded Hulu drama “The Path” in 2018.

Kartheiser was most recently seen in 2021, in the third season of HBO’s comic book series

Q: Is the kid who played Vinnie, Doogie’s best friend on “Doogie Howser, M.D.,” still acting?

A: “Doogie Howser, M.D.” has achieved a pretty rare feat: both of its main child actors have continued on to adult stardom.

Neil Patrick Harris (who played Doogie himself) of course went on to comedy success with “How I Met Your Mother” and much more. Max Casella (Vinnie), on the other hand, has leaned more towards drama, and had big roles in some pretty prestigious stuff.

“The Titans.” He played Jonathan Crane, known also as The Scarecrow, one of the biggest villains in the Batman canon (“Titans” brought together characters from across the DC Comics universe).

It’s a tribute to the impact of “Mad Men” that, just a few months ago, Kartheiser was interviewed by British GQ magazine specifically to talk about Pete Campbell. He compared his own life to Pete’s and said they were able to mature together and regret their mistakes. “Nobody’s right all the time, and nobody’s good all the time, and Pete certainly was not, but I like him,” Kartheiser said.

For example, he played Benny in the last three seasons of “The Sopranos,” and starred in all 10 episodes of the critically acclaimed HBO drama “Vinyl” in 2016.

Most recently, he’s been starring in the Paramount+ drama “Tulsa King,” which was just renewed for a third season.

He’s mostly been a TV guy, but he’s done some film as well. For example, he had a big role in the 2013 rom-com “Blue Jasmine” and in the 2008 relationship drama “Revolutionary Road.”
