“Gossip Girl” actor Penn Badgley returns as serial love addict Joe Goldberg in the fifth and final season of “You,” premiering Thursday, April 24, on Netflix. Back in New York and married to affluent Brit Kate (Charlotte Ritchie, “Ghosts”), Joe tries to balance life in the limelight with owning and operating Mooney’s bookstore, the site of many previous crimes. Griffin Matthews (“The Flight Attendant”) and Madeline Brewer (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) co-star.

What makes a murderer? And how can you tell them apart from everyone else? These sinister questions form the basis of “You,” the Netflix thriller series that shot to popularity following its Season 1 debut in September 2018. Now, nearly seven years later, the series’ fifth and final season brings murderous leading man Joe Goldberg, played by Penn Badgley (“Gossip Girl”), back to the New York City bookshop where it all began.
“You” Season 5 premieres Thursday, April 24, on Netflix. Both true crime and human psychology have been hugely popular topics of public interest for centuries, but the rise of film, television and podcast culture has had a lasting impact on the way society views some of our most frightening peers — whether real or fictional. Author Caroline Kepnes capitalized on this morbid interest when she wrote her first novel, “You,” in 2014, despite then being completely unaware that it would later be translated into 19 languages while spawning three sequels and a five-season Netflix series starring Badgley, one of TV’s biggest small-screen darlings.
Badgley, who had completed his five-year run as studious hunk Dan Humphrey on the massively successful teen drama “Gossip Girl” just six years earlier, would explore a career in cinema by way of films such as “Parts Per Billion” (2014), “The Paper Store” (2016) and “Cymbeline” (2014) before ultimately returning to television in 2017 when he was cast as the psychopathic lead in the Netflix adaptation of Kepnes’ acclaimed novel.
Back to ‘You’ Final season of Badgley-led thriller gets late-April premiere
Now four seasons and three big “loves” later, Joe is married and moving back to New York from London, where Season 4 took place.
“Every season they manage to find new space to make it interesting and relevant,” Badgley told Netflix’s Tudum while filming the series’ fifth and final season. “I think somehow coming back to where it started allowed for it to just become grounded in the way that it needs to also have this kind of spectacular finish.”
Based on press details released by Netflix, the “epic” fifth season was always expected to be “You’s” last. Because of this, expectations will be high for the finale, and fans of the show are likely to be split in their desire to see Joe brought to justice for his numerous grisly crimes.
“We always said that we would stop after five and [that], in a perfect world, we would bring Joe back home to New York,” co-showrunner/executive producer Michael Foley (“How to Get Away with Murder”) told Netflix Tudum. “We loved the idea of things coming full circle for him. We’re excited by the fact that Joe came home as such a different person than [who] we saw in Season 1. At the core of our final story for Joe is this dichotomy of the old and the new.”
As for the plot of the series’ final 10 episodes, Netflix has set the scene three years after Joe and his wife, Kate (Charlotte Ritchie, “Call the Midwife”), left the U.K. for New York. We learn that Joe has purchased Mooney’s bookstore — the site of his meet-cute and final showdown with Beck — with some
The novel — and subsequently the TV series’ first season — follows bookstore employee Joe Goldberg, a charming and wellread young New Yorker with a troubling outlook on love who grows obsessed with budding author Guinevere Beck (played in Season 1 by “Ordinary Joe” actress Elizabeth Lail). Driven by his untamed “love” for her, Joe tracks her every move through the city, arranging “chance” encounters and ultimately forcing a relationship by any means possible. Determined to have the supposed love of his life by his side forever, Joe’s passion sees him go to extreme lengths to secure Beck’s loyalty to him.
of the ample funds he has accrued by virtue of his marriage into the affluent Lockwood family. With Kate now in the role of CEO of Lockwood Corporation, “Joe is her loyal husband who has been dubbed Prince Charming by the adoring public, and they’re both following through on their pact to help each other do good” (per Netflix).
“But as the teaser hints, and longtime followers of the
misadventures of Joe Goldberg can guess, reconciling who Joe has been with who he wants to be is an ongoing project,” the Netflix synopsis continues. “Joe will not only cross paths with a young woman, played by Madeline Brewer [”The Handmaid’s Tale”], who makes him reconsider his affluent life, but will also contend with his wife[’s] ... siblings.”
“All the other seasons, [Joe]’s been really under the radar,” coshowrunner/executive producer Justin W. Lo (“Parenthood”) told Tudum, adding, “That’s how he is able to move from season to season and place to place: because of his anonymity. Now that he is well known in New York, social media is on him. That’s something fun for us to explore.”
Season 5 of “You” co-stars Griffin Matthews (“The Flight
Attendant”), Anna Camp (“Pitch Perfect,” 2012), Natasha Behnam (“The Girls on the Bus”), Pete Ploszek (“Captain Marvel,” 2019), Nava Mau (“Baby Reindeer”), stage actor Tom Francis (Hope Mill Theatre’s “Rent,” 2020) and the mononymous b (“Station 19”).
Sure to be packed with dark drama, the final season of “You” premieres Thursday, April 24, on Netflix.

Stars on screen
By Michelle Rose TV Media
Bound for ‘Nashville’: After 14 seasons of playing NCIS agent G. Callen in the CBS series “NCIS: Los Angeles,” actor Chris O’Donnell is moving on to a different procedural, franchise and network.
O’Donnell is the first cast member and series regular to join ABC’s upcoming “9-1-1: Nashville,” a new procedural that is slated for the 2025-26 broadcast season. It will be the third offshoot of the ongoing series “9-1-1,” which moved from Fox to ABC in May 2023. The second spinoff, “91-1: Lone Star,” wrapped its fiveseason run this past February.
O’Donnell, whose additional TV credits include “Grey’s Anatomy” and a guest role as Pete Davidson’s agent in Peacock’s “Bupkis,” will portray Capt. Don Sharpe in “9-1-1: Nashville.” The character is officially described as “a rugged fire captain and rodeo rider who runs Nashville’s busiest firehouse with his beloved son. Don is a devoted husband and family man, but he has his secrets.”
This is the first big casting news for the new ABC procedural, which was handed a straight-toseries order in February. From 20th Television in association with Ryan Murphy Television, “9-1-1: Nashville” is written and executive produced by 9-1-1 franchise co-creators Ryan Murphy and Tim
Minear and “9-1-1: Lone Star” showrunner Rashad Raisani. Additional executive producers include Brad Falchuk, who co-created the first two 9-1-1 series with Murphy and Minear, and “9-1-1” star Angela Bassett, who also executive produced “Lone Star.”
The idea of growing the franchise by adding another spinoff gained traction after the successful launch of “Lone Star” in 2020, but it really took off once the parent series moved to ABC, where 20th Television became the network’s primary production arm last October.
There was talk of setting the new series in Las Vegas or even Hawaii, but according to Deadline, the high cost of filming became a production hurdle. The focus then shifted to the South and Music City emerged as the frontrunner — with a production tax credit reportedly helping to seal the deal.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly shortly after “Lone Star” wrapped, Minear explained why Nashville made for an ideal spinoff location.
“It’s the city itself, its personality,” said Minear. “We just thought it would be a good fit for the franchise, and actually quite different than Texas.”
Indeed, the city’s rich music heritage should make for some interesting storylines that will help set this spinoff apart. No premiere date has been announced yet.

Season 2 of ‘Andor’ takes Cassian full circle
By Andrew Silver TV Media
Ever since Disney acquired the Star Wars franchise, along with Lucasfilm as a whole, in October 2012, the House of Mouse’s stewardship of the beloved sci-fi franchise has been under heavy scrutiny. Unlike Disney’s incredible success with the Marvel Cinematic Universe — especially during the later phases of the Infinity Saga — they have struggled to consistently deliver with Star Wars across the realms of film and television.
For every hit like 2017’s “The Force Awakens” and the first two seasons of “The Mandalorian,” there are clunkers such as 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker” and the first — and now only — season of “The Acolyte.” Even the nearly untouchable “Mandalorian” faced stern criticism from critics and fans alike during its third season.
Also, Disney’s penchant to announce projects so far in advance with little insurance that they’ll ever come to fruition — see the long-gestating “Rogue Squadron” movie from director Patty Jenkins (“Wonder Woman,” 2017), and David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’s (showrunners of HBO’s “Game of Thrones”) scrapped movie trilogy — has left fans with, reasonably, little to no enthusiasm for the franchise’s future.
A bright spot during this troubled time was the first season of “Andor.” From “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” (2016) writer Tony Gilroy, “Andor” followed the titular Cassian Andor (Diego Luna, “Narcos: Mexico”) as he began his journey to become a Rebel hero five years prior to the events of “Rogue One.” Lauded for its gritty tone, grounded story and heavy use of practical effects, “Andor’s” first season went on to receive universal praise and multiple Emmy nominations. Despite low viewership upon its initial release, the buzz surrounding “Andor” eventually led to it becoming 2022’s ninth-most-streamed series on Disney+, according to streaming analytics firm FlixPatrol.
Now just over two years later, “Andor” is back for its second and final season. Making its debut
Tuesday, April 22, on Disney+, this season sees Cassian become an increasingly important player in the Rebel Alliance as war with the Empire draws ever closer. As portrayed in abundance through calls of “the Empire cannot win,” warnings that “the monster will come from us all” and a menacing shot of a near-finished Death Star during the latest trailer, a sense of desperation permeates this new season. While many know where the Galactic Rebellion eventually leads, how exactly it gets to the events of “Rogue One” and beyond is currently uncharted territory.
According to Variety, Season 2 will consist of 12 episodes broken into four three-episode chapters, with each of these chapters covering a year in Cassian’s life leading up to the events of “Rogue One.” Each chapter is handled by a different writer, starting with showrunner Gilroy, before handing things off to Beau Willimon (“The Ides of March,” 2011), Dan Gilroy (“Nightcrawler,” 2014) and Tom Bissell (“The Disaster Artist,” 2017), respectively. Directing duties aren’t split as evenly, as Ariel Kleiman (“Partisan,” 2015) directs the first six episodes while Janus Metz (“Borg vs. McEnroe,” 2017) and Alonso Ruizpalacios (“La Cocina,” 2024) handle the back half of the season.
As Season 2 draws closer to the events of “Rogue One,” fans should expect the appearance of some familiar faces from that Star Wars spinoff. So far, Alan Tudyk (“Firefly”) and Ben Mendelsohn (“Ready Player One,” 2018) are confirmed to return as the witty security droid K-2SO and Imperial Director Orson Krennic, respectively. In addition to these return-

ing characters, Stellan Skarsgard (“Dune: Part Two,” 2024), Genevieve O’Reilly (“The Dry,” 2020), Denise Gough (The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt), Kyle Soller (“The Titan, 2018), Adria Arjona (“Father of the Bride,” 2022), Faye Marsay (“Game of Thrones”), Varada Sethu (“Jurassic World: Dominion,” 2022), Elizabeth Dulau (“Wicked,” 2024), James McArdle (“Mare of Easttown”) and Forest Whitaker (“Godfather of Harlem”) will all reprise their roles from the first season. On top of being showrunner, Tony Gilroy serves as executive producer alongside brother John Gilroy (“Pacific Rim,” 2013), Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy (“Jurassic Park,” 1993) and Sanne Wohlenberg (“Chernobyl”). Also, David Meanti (“Des”) is a producer on Season 2.
For those looking to catch up with “Andor” before Season 2 starts, or for those who just need a refresher, the Disney+ YouTube channel has got you covered. At the moment, the first three episodes of the series — “Kassa,” “That Would Be Me” and “Reckoning” — are available to view for free. Additionally, a 14-minute Season 1 recap video provides viewers all the context they need for the new season. Lastly, the Disney+ YouTube channel played host to a live rewatch of key scenes from Season 1 with Tony Gilroy and select special guests on March 13. The archive of this onehour event filled with honest reactions, behind-the-scenes information and questions from fans is available to watch at anytime. Be sure to tune in to the final piece of Cassian’s story when Season 2 of “Andor” premieres Tuesday, April 22, on Disney+.

In this fast-paced competition series, Fieri asks four talented chefs to raid a grocery store for any and all ingredients used in the show’s three weekly challenges. Outside of their usual (professional) environment, these chefs must face real-world challenges, such as out-of-stock inventory, picking
five items or less, using only frozen foods or heading to the check-out with a tight $10 budget.
Round by round, guest judges — such as Troy Johnson (“Campus Eats”), Aarti Sequeira (“Food Network Star”), Damaris Phillips (“Southern at Heart”), Catherine McCord (“Home & Family”), Richard Blais (“Next Level Chef”) and more — decide who stays and who’s eliminated during the first three rounds, while the final chef is then given a bonus timed challenge — with two minutes to spare, the chef must collect every item given on a shopping list, with each item gained earning them $2,000. If the chef completes their list in time, they’ll earn themselves a whopping $20,000 to further invest in their careers.
So far, this 38th season of the steadfast series has seen
everything from past “Tournament of Champions” winners, “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” chefs and past “Guy’s Grocery Games” winners, to powerhouse culinary duos fighting for their home cities in episodes that pit the culinary staples of Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York and Chicago against each other. In this week’s upcoming episode, Fieri invites three more of the best all-star chefs he knows to take part in a fruitfilled extravaganza. With berries, melons and citrus taking center stage in each and every challenge, the chefs take part in an auction that determines who gains exclusive rights to which fruit.
Silly, quick-witted and delicious, “Guy’s Grocery Games” premieres a brand-new episode Wednesday, April 23, on Food Network.

Q: Why is “Zootopia” sometimes called “Zootropolis”? Is it like the Harry Potter issue between “Philosopher’s Stone” and “Sorcerer’s Stone”?
A: It wasn’t even that artistic.
The story goes that the first Harry Potter book’s title was changed from “Philosopher’s Stone” in the U.K. to “Sorcerer’s Stone” in the U.S. because its American publisher thought that the word “philosopher” wasn’t “magical” enough.
Whereas Disney’s 2016 animated comedy “Zootopia” was renamed “Zootropolis” in the U.K. and elsewhere, reportedly for trademark purposes.
An official Disney statement said the title was changed “to merely allow the film to have a unique title that works for U.K. audiences.”
But others have since pointed out other pre-existing uses of the name “Zootopia” in Europe, most notably a popular zoo in Denmark with the same name. This suggests it’s not just a question of what “works” for U.K. audiences — especially since the new name was used elsewhere in Europe and around the world as well.
Speaking of which, it gets worse: the film actually has a third title, “Zoomania,” specifically in Germany, apparently because there was already a children’s book called “Zootropolis” published there.
The title swaps haven’t impacted the film’s success. It was a clear hit in all these territories, and will be getting a sequel — “Zootopia
2“/”Zootropolis 2“/”Zoomania 2” is slated for release this November.
Q: What is Ving Rhames doing lately? I feel like I haven’t seen him for a while.
A: Ving Rhames (“Mission: Impossible,” 1996) has settled into a pretty amazing career groove. Essentially, he appears in one the biggest movies of the year every few years and then fills the time between with interesting indie projects.
Those big movies are generally sequels to 1996’s “Mission: Impossible.” He plays computer hacker Luther Stickell in the series, and is in fact the only actor to appear in all eight films besides their main star, Tom Cruise (“Top Gun,” 1986). All of them have been blockbusters.
In between, he does more scrappy, street-level projects, and his most recent role falls into this category. He’s part of the ensemble cast of “Dope Thief,” a gritty new Apple TV+ drama series about two low-level criminals — played by Brian Tyree Henry (“Atlanta”) and Wagner Moura (“Narcos”) — who stumble into a major narcotics operation. It’s just now finishing up its first season, with no word so far on a second.
Rhames also just finished an even more ambitious and offbeat project — “Uppercut,” an indie film released in two versions: “still” and “sparkling.” Both are about a young female boxer (Luise Grossmann, “What Costs Your Fear,” 2021) who trains under an aging, disillusioned coach (Rhames).
The film’s director, German newcomer Torsten Ruether, told The Hollywood Reporter that the “still” version, released in 2023, is “a quieter, more dialog-focused arthouse film,” while the “sparkling” one, released earlier this
year, is “more mainstream, box office.”
That more or less sums up Rhames’ career: flitting between megahits (he did a voice in last year’s megahit animation “The Wild Robot,” for example) and gritty dramas. You could trace the roots of that pattern all the way back to the role that made him a star: crime boss Marsellus Wallace in 1994’s “Pulp Fiction,” a scrappy indie drama that ultimately became a blockbuster.
whom she met on the set of “Designing Women,” that media scrutiny drove her into early retirement.

Q: Watching Jean Smart on “Hacks” has made me wonder: Is Delta Burke still acting?
A: For younger readers who don’t see the connection, Jean Smart, star of the buzzy HBO comedy “Hacks,” was previously best known as part of the ensemble of late ‘80s sitcom “Designing Women.” At the time, though, her co-star, Delta Burke (“DAG”), seemed to be the more likely breakout star.
And she was, initially. Burke left “Designing Women” early and landed a sitcom of her own called “Delta.” But a string of tabloid scandals, mostly dealing with her weight, plagued her. According to her longtime husband, Gerald McRaney (“Simon & Simon”),
spots and TV movies in the ‘00s but was clearly already flirting with the idea of quitting showbiz. Partly because of the toll it was taking on her mental health, as McRaney said, and partly because she was developing a sideline as a clothing designer.
But it’s possible that we haven’t seen the last of Burke on screen. According to MccRaney, “There’ve been a couple times when her old agent, who is now a producer, has persuaded her to come out of retirement, but she will do it very reluctantly.”
