When it comes to longrunning scripted British television series, several titles rush to mind. From popular sci-fi/fantasy series “Doctor Who,” which boasts 40 complete seasons and several specials since its premiere in November 1963, to ongoing ensemble cast series like “EastEnders” (40 seasons), “Emmerdale” (54 seasons) and “Coronation Street” (66 seasons), it is clear that the U.K. has a lush culture of appointment television, which remains alive and well to this day.

Another series that appears to be joining the U.K.’s ranks of long-running televised content is “Call the Midwife,” the medical period drama that began its run on BBC One in 2012. Headed into its 14th season on Sunday, March 30 — a number of seasons that would border on astounding in nearly any other market — “Call the Midwife” is available to watch on PBS or to stream via the PBS Passport streaming service. For those who hold a BritBox subscription, Season 14 of “Call the Midwife” has been available since its U.K. premiere in January.

With the growing length of the series in mind, it is, however, important to note that cancelation and spinoff rumors abound ahead of the confirmed 15th and 16th seasons. Without delving into any spoilers, suffice it to say that an emotional end to the eight-episode 14th season has audiences wondering what lies ahead for the suburban Londonbased nurses and whether the series will continue after its scheduled run.

“I don’t believe ‘Call The Midwife’ will ever end,” series creator Heidi Thomas (“Upstairs Downstairs”) told the Radio Times magazine in a February interview, “but I do think we might take a break at some point.”

“Call the Midwife” focuses on “the nurses, midwives and nuns from Nonnatus House,” reads the official PBS description, “who visit the expectant mothers of Poplar, providing the poorest women

with the best possible care.” The series is based on the memoirs of the late British nurse Jennifer Worth, who practiced in one of East London’s most impoverished areas in the 1950s. And while the BBC series began its first season set in 1957, 14 seasons later the women of Poplar are ushering in a new era: the 1970s.

According to PBS, in this newest season, “chaos erupts as the Isle of Dogs bid for independence. Amid the turmoil, the midwives work tirelessly to keep Nonnatus House running while addressing complex social and health challenges.”

While looking ahead to the excitement and challenges of portraying another new decade within the series, Thomas reflected that “we are a family behind the scenes, on the screen and in front of the telly, and I’m thrilled that we’re all heading into the 1970s together.”

To call the cast of “Call the Midwife” a “family” is hardly an overstatement, as much of the cast has returned year after year to tell the many harrowing medical tales of the women in the community of Poplar. From attending to teenaged, geriatric and complicated pregnancies of all kinds, to other on-the-job duties such as caring for patients with sexually transmitted diseases, psychiatric illnesses and those who require emergency attention, there is hardly much time left for the women of Nonnatus House to have to any sort of personal life. Nevertheless, Season 14 sees plenty of out-of-office romance, protests and personal troubles for these hardworking women.

Returning to the screen for the series’ 14th season are Judy Parfitt (“Ever After: A Cinderella Story,” 1998), Rebecca Gethings (“The Thick of It”) and Jenny Agutter (“An American Werewolf in London,” 1981) as Sisters Monica Joan, Veronica and Julienne, respectively; Linda Bassett (“Kinky Boots,” 2005) as Nurse Crane; Laura Main (“Murder City”) as Shelagh Turner; Helen George (“The Three Musketeers,” 2011) as Trixie Aylward; Megan Cusack (“The

Cherry Orchard,” 2020), who is scheduled to leave before Season 15, and emerging talent Francesca Fullilove as Nancy and Colette Corrigan. Also returning are Cliff Parisi (“From Hell,” 2001) and Annabelle Apsion (“Lolita,” 1997) as Fred and Violet Buckle, alongside Stephen McGann (“Emmerdale Farm”) as Dr. Turner and Georgie Glen (“Waterloo Road”) as Miss Higgins. Andrea Irvine (“Red

Rock”), meanwhile, joins the cast as Esther Noble.

Likewise, Trinidadian-born midwife Joyce Highland (Renee Bailey, “Rebel Cheer Squad: A Get Even Series”), who joined the cast of characters last season as a midwifery pupil and is now a fullfledged English nurse, returns to the cast alongside this season’s newest member: nun and midwife Sister Catherine, played by Molly Vevers (“The Rig”).

Sister Catherine is Season 14’s nun in training, but she will have plenty of self-reflection and hard work to face as “her devotion to God came at the expense of a relationship with her family, who turned their back on her when she told them she had been called to serve” (per RadioTimes.com).

“Call the Midwife” is locked in for at least two more seasons — and a few Christmas Specials, as usual — with its home network,

BBC, but it could likely continue far beyond that if the passion remains for its extensive fanbase.

“’Call the Midwife’ is the pride and joy of all who work on it,” said Thomas in a 2023 interview, “but it’s our fantastic, loyal audience that matters most.”

Don’t miss the North American premiere of “Call the Midwife” Season 14 when it airs Sunday, March 30, on PBS. Check your local listings for details.

Stars on screen

Return to ‘Office’: Peacock’s planned follow-up to cult classic “The Office” is officially set in the same universe as the Emmy-winning hit NBC series, and the proof is in the first major casting reveal.

It seems Oscar Nunez (“The School Duel,” 2024) is set to reprise his role as levelheaded accountant Oscar Martinez in the new series. Credit “The InSneider” newsletter for letting the cat out of the bag, as it’s believed that producers had intended to keep his involvement a surprise until the premiere, and neither Universal TV nor Nunez’s own representatives have officially commented on this big reveal.

Regardless, this makes Nunez the first original “Office” cast member — that is, the first from the American version of the British series led by Ricky Gervais (“After Life”) — confirmed to be participating in the new mockumentary, which doesn’t have an official title yet. According to Deadline, it’s being referred to as the Untitled Greg Daniels/Michael Koman Project for now, but

it’s rumored to be titled “The Paper.”

Whatever its title might be, the mockumentary will follow the employees of a faltering historic newspaper in the Midwest, where attempts at reviving it are captured by the same documentary crew that filmed the hijinks at Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch.

Sources have stressed that it will be an ensemble series rather than a story centered on one character, despite co-creator Daniels’ previous statements about Oscar being a character he’d like to explore further, and perhaps that’s why Oscar (the character) has reportedly been involved from the start.

Oscar was last seen running for state senator in the series finale. No word yet on any storyline or updated character details, but the news does hint at the possibility that other former officemates might pop up alongside new cast members Domhnall Gleeson (“Alice & Jack”), Sabrina Impacciatore (“The White Lotus”), Alex Edelman (“Alex Edelman: Just for Us”) and Gbemisola Ikumelo (“A League of Their Own”), among others.

The power to heal New hospital drama ‘Pulse’ premieres on Netflix

The medical drama is a television staple. Daytime soap opera “General Hospital” has aired on ABC for over 60 years, “ER” won a Peabody Award during its 15-seasonlong run and “Grey’s Anatomy” is a long-running modern classic. Even some sillier iterations of the hospital series such as “Emergency!” and “Scrubs” are still in daily syndication. Traditional broadcast networks have produced so many medical drama hits over the decades that it only makes sense for streamers to get in on the triedand-true TV formula.

Netflix’s first English language medical drama, “Pulse,” premieres Thursday, April 3. Set in the fictional Maguire Medical Center, the series focuses on third-year medical resident Dr. Danielle “Danny” Simms, portrayed by “The Fall of the House of Usher” actress Willa Fitzgerald, as she navigates a sudden promotion to chief resident in the hospital’s emergency department.

Celebrations are in order for Danny’s new set of responsibilities. However, the situation is complicated on arrival as she is replacing the very well-liked Dr. Xander Phillips (Colin Woodell, “The Flight Attendant”) after his unexpected suspension. It would be one thing if Danny simply had big shoes to fill as senior resident, but beyond the workplace drama, she and Phillips have been trying to keep their rocky romantic relationship together under the radar.

Storms are brewing in the emergency room itself, but it’s nothing compared to the hurricane making its way to Miami, causing accidents and injuries that flood the department while the literal floods outside force the hospital to go into lockdown.

Things happen incredibly quickly in emergency medicine, and as the city weathers a natural disaster, Maguire needs all hands on deck, despite its recent staff shake-ups. Phillips stays on during the emergency while Danny tries to settle into her new role, leaving the other resident doctors to speculate why Phillips was suspended in the first place.

Portraying the rest of the resident doctors in “Pulse” are Jack Bannon (“Endeavour”) as second-year surgical resident Tom Cole; Jessie T. Usher (“The Boys”) as third-year emergency medicine resident Sam Elijah; Chelsea Muirhead (“Warrior”) as surgical intern Sophie Chen; Daniela Nieves (“Vampire Academy”) as third-year medical student Camila Perez; and Jessy Yates (“Me”) as second-year emergency medicine resident Harper.

Justina Machado (“One Day at a Time”) stars as Dr. Natalie Cruz, chair of surgery and emergency medicine at Maguire. Néstor Carbonell (“The Morning Show”) is Dr. Ruben Soriano, a senior surgeon dedicated to excellence — both in his work and from his residents.

And, an emergency medicine department is nothing without its nursing staff. Starring as ER nurses Gabriel Moreno and Cass Himmelstein are Santiago Segura (“Walker: Independence”) and Jessica Rothe (“Happy Death Day,” 2017), while Arturo Del Puerto (“For All Mankind”) is charge nurse Luis Dominguez. Directors Sarah Boyd (“Upload”), Kate Dennis (“Run”), SJ Main Munoz (“Manifest”) and Wendey Stanzler (“Five Days at Memorial”) each directed two episodes of “Pulse,” with coshowrunner and executive producer Carlton Cuse (“Lost”) directing the penultimate and finale episodes of the debut season. All 10 episodes of the new series drop on the streamer on premiere day, giving subscribers a good opportunity for a mid-week binge, something Cuse told Tu-

Screen Scramble

dum that he and creator, coshowrunner and executive producer Zoe Robyn (“The Equalizer”) worked into the DNA of “Pulse.”

“We just wanted the show to be fun and entertaining — something that you could really enjoy after you come home from a long day,” Cuse said. “We really want the audience to fall in love with the characters as much as we love the characters.”

After crafting complicated, human characters as the healers of Maguire, Robyn told Tudum she wanted “Pulse” to stir up “hope and optimism” in viewers of the series, sharing, “You don’t really want to be in the hospital. But if you were in the hospital, this is the one you would want to be in.” Robyn continued, “You want to be in the care of these people.”

“Pulse” is the latest of several new medical series to debut in late 2024 and early 2025. The NBC sitcom “St. Denis Medical” continues its freshman season through the end of the month, while Fox’s “Doc” and CBS’s “Watson” offer spins on the medical procedural.

One of the year’s standout series so far has been the Max medical drama “The Pitt,” starring “ER” alum Noah Wyle, set at the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital in the City of Bridges. It, along with “St. Denis Medical” and “Doc,” have all been renewed for second seasons already.

Catch the premiere of the Netflix medical drama “Pulse” when all 10 episodes of the series’ debut season drop Thursday, April 3, on the streamer.

Welcoming passengers to climb aboard at “the delicious intersection between Black culture, history and cuisine” (per Forbes), Mississippiborn chef Jernard Wells takes off on a food-and-adventure-filled journey during the brand-new series “Savor the City,” coming to TV One Thursday, April 3.

Inspired by the historic Green Book — a travel guide published from the ‘30s to the ‘60s, providing Black travelers the information necessary to stay safe while visiting different cities across a segregated America — this latest endeavor from Wells follows the chef as he travels across the country with special guests, indulging in delicious, one-of-akind, mouth-watering meals while exploring locations that

celebrate Black culture, travel and food.

“We’re going to the most sought-after dining spots, giving you an exclusive VIP tour of your favorite Black-owned establishments,” reads a description given by TV One. “From street food to fine dining, each episode will showcase a different city and highlight the unique offerings and hidden gems that make up Black culture.”

Affectionately called “The Chef of Love,” Wells has previously hosted “New Soul Kitchen” and “New Soul Kitchen Remix” for TV One’s sister network, CLEO TV. The chef — also a bestselling cookbook author, husband and father of nine — hopes to continue sharing his love of food through this latest series, sharing with Forbes that “‘Savor the City’ takes a unique approach to exploring Black culinary heritage” in the process.

“We, as African Americans and as people of color, travel to some of the best places. We seek out some of the best food and the best entertainment that speaks to us,” Wells says.

WHAT’S NEW ON PRIME VIDEO

“The Bondsman”

A different kind of reaper takes center stage in Prime Video’s new limited series “The Bondsman,” premiering on the streamer Thursday, April 3. After he is murdered, bounty hunter Hub Halloran (Kevin Bacon, “City on a Hill”) is resurrected by the Devil to take on his old job — but with a wild new twist. Hub won’t just be going after any wanted individuals, he’ll be hunting down demons that have escaped from Hell. As Hub takes on his new way of life, he “learns how his own sins got his soul condemned — which pushes him to seek a second chance at life, love and country music” (per Prime Video). Created by Grainger David (“The Chair,” 2012) and helmed by showrunner Erik Oleson (“Carnival Row”), “The Bondsman” comes from Blumhouse Television, Marker 96, CrimeThink Production Company and Amazon MGM Studios. The series also stars Jennifer Nettles (“The Righteous Gemstones”), Damon Herriman (“Mr. Inbetween”), Beth Grant (“Donnie Darko,” 2001), Maxwell Jenkins (“Lost in Space”) and Jolene Purdy (“Orange is the New Black”).

WHAT’S NEW ON AMC+

“The Last Anniversary”

After her arrival is met with hostility, making it abundantly clear that her presence is unwelcome, Sophie begins to investigate the many mysteries that Scribbly Gum holds — from the disappearance of a young couple decades ago to a web of her own family’s complex, long-held secrets. Miranda Richardson (“Good Omens”), Danielle Macdonald (“The Tourist”), Claude Scott-Mitchell (“Hotel Portofino”), Helen Thomson (“Elvis,” 2022), Uli Latukefu (“Young Rock”), Susan Prior (“The Rover,” 2014), Jeremy Lindsay Taylor (“Playing for Keeps”), Xavier Samuel (“Apple Cider Vinegar”), Angela Punch McGregor (“Troppo”), Charlie Garber (“Spirited”), Nikki Shiels (“Ten Pound Poms”) and Ines English (“Last Days of the Space Age”) also star.

WHAT’S NEW ON HULU

“Dying For Sex”

Based on the Wonder podcast of the same name, FX’s new limited series “Dying for Sex” premieres Friday, April 4, on Hulu. Inspired by the story of Molly Kochan, as detailed in her podcast with her best friend,

Nikki Boyer, this dramatization of her life begins when Molly, portrayed by Michelle Williams (“Manchester by the Sea, 2016), receives a Stage IV metastatic breast cancer diagnosis. Determined to live her life to the fullest for as long as she is able, Molly decides to leave her husband, Steve (Jay Duplass, “Transparent”), and take a deep dive into her untapped sexual desires. As Molly gets unabashedly down and dirty, her ride-or-die friend Nikki (played by Jenny Slate, “I Want You Back,” 2022) cheers her on all the way. Also starring Rob Delaney (“Catastrophe”), Kelvin Yu (“The Afterparty”), David Rasche (“Succession”), Esco Jouléy (“State of the Union”) and Sissy Spacek (“Bloodline”), “Dying for Sex” is co-created and written by “New Girl’s” Kim Rosenstock and Elizabeth Meriwether.

WHAT’S NEW ON NETFLIX

“Jurassic World: Chaos Theory” - Season 3

The enduring tale of modern meeting prehistoric continues in Season 3 of “Jurassic World: Chaos Theory,” premiering Thursday, April 3, on Netflix. Inspired by Michael Crichton’s 1990 sci-fi novel, Steven Spielberg’s 1993 smash hit “Jurassic Park” and the many subsequent films, this animated youth series is itself a spinoff of “Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous,” another entry in the expansive Jurassic World franchise. The series picks up six years after the events at Camp Cretaceous, with dinosaurs now roaming wild in the world. In this new era of chaos, “The Nublar Six” grapple with

tragedy as they face threats from humans and dinos alike, “the Camp Fam goes global on a search for answers — and an elusive villain — that takes them all over the world” (per Netflix). Helmed by showrunners Scott Kreamer (“Cleopatra in Space”) and Aaron Hammersley (“Star vs. the Forces of Evil”), the series also features the voice acting talents of Paul-Mikél Williams (“The Upshaws”) as Darius Bowman, Darren Barnet (“Anyone But You,” 2023) as Kenji Kon, Raini Rodriguez (“Austin & Ally”) as Sammy Gutierrez, Kausar Mohammed (“Monster High”) as Yasmina ‘Yaz’ Fadoula, Peter Arpesella (“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” 2022) as Vito and Kiersten Kelly (“Emergency Contact,” 2024) as Brooklyn.

“Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer”

A long-awaited hunt for answers unfolds in “Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer,” premiering Monday, March 31, on Netflix. In 2010, human remains were discovered along a stretch of Ocean Parkway in Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. This discovery led to a shocking number of other bodies, unearthing a gruesome connection between the victims — and leading investigators to suspect that it had been the work of a serial killer. Meanwhile, for over a decade before, young women who worked in the sex industry in New York City and nearby Long Island had been disappearing, leaving their loved ones desperate for answers they thought they might never receive. Stretching out for another decade,

the case remained unsolved until 2023, “when a major break came after corruption was rooted out within the police responsible for the case” (per Netflix). Detailing the harrowing story from the initial disappearances to the long-awaited arrest, “Gone Girls,” directed by Liz Garbus (“All In: The Fight for Democracy,” 2020), features interviews with journalists, law enforcement officials, and friends and family of the victims and accused killer alike.

WHAT’S NEW ON DISNEY+

“Oklahoma City Bombing: One Day in America”

Revisiting one of the deadliest acts of terror in modern American history, the new three-part National Geographic documentary “Oklahoma City Bombing: One Day in America” premieres Wednesday, April 2, on Disney+. On April 19, 1995, the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City claimed the lives of 168 people, including 19 children, with countless others injured. Told in vivid detail by those who lived through it, this series details “an unprecedented moment-bymoment account” of the bombing, “including extraordinary stories of survival, heroic rescue efforts, the nationwide search that followed, and a city’s need for justice and healing after the tragedy,” according to National Geographic. With rare archival footage and firsthand accounts, “One Day in America” relives this harrowing day with those most affected by it. Meanwhile, as a

community worked to bring themselves back together, the FBI, led by Special Agent in Charge Bob Ricks, embarked on a frantic race to bring the bomber to justice. The series is produced by National Geographic and 72 Films.

WHAT’S NEW ON ACORN TV

“Truelove”

What lengths would you go to for your friends? One group puts that question to the test in the British drama series “Truelove,” premiering Monday, March 31, on Acorn TV. After reuniting at a funeral, a group of old friends gather together to reminisce on old times. Caught up in the emotion of the moment, they make a drunken pact together, promising that, when the time comes, they’ll engineer a dignified death for one another, rather than letting their friends suffer through a slow and terrible decline. But what sounds like a far-off idea soon becomes a terrifying reality. As the group grapples with their past and their futures, they do everything they can to hold each other together in the face of difficult and unprecedented choices. From creators Charlie Covell (“Kaos”) and Iain Weatherby (“Safe Harbor”), the series is directed by Carl Tibbetts (“The Lazarus Project”) and Chloe Wicks (“The Flatshare”). Lindsay Duncan (“The Wheel of Time”), Clarke Peters (“The Wire”), Fiona Button (“The Split”), Phil Davis (“Trying”), Peter Egan (“Unforgotten”), Sue Johnston (“Waking the Dead”) and Kiran Sonia Sawar (“Pure”) star.

Q: The host(s) of “Jeopardy” occasionally refer to the judges regarding the validity of an answer. Who are these judges?

A: If you’re picturing flowing black robes and one or more gavels, you’re overthinking it. The “judges” the hosts refer to are the show’s team of writers, researchers and producers. They all sit together at a table on set,

Ken Jennings hosts “Jeopardy!”

Q: Is Stallone going to do another Rambo movie?

A: All that can be said, for certain, is that at this moment, Sylvester Stallone (“Rocky,” 1976) is not actively working on a sixth Rambo movie. I need to put all those qualifiers in because, frankly, no one expected a fifth Rambo movie to happen, either, until suddenly it did.

Eleven years passed between the fourth movie (confusingly just called “Rambo”) in 2008 and the fifth, “Rambo: Last

tagram: “Make it #1 this weekend. (He could be back.)”

If there were to be another sequel, he has said more than once that it would take place on “an Indian reservation,” because the character John Rambo is half Navajo. “That’s the only place he could go and heal,” Stallone told JoBlo.com. However, as I said, Stallone’s not actively working on that movie. That’s partly because, as usual, he has about a dozen other irons in the fire.

known simply as “the Judges’ Table,” while the show is filmed. The writers are there for their expertise as the people who wrote the questions in the first place and who know what answers they were actually looking for (for example, in the case of a nuanced or borderline answer). The producers are there to rule on procedural questions about the flow of the show. And the researchers are there in case no one knows the an-

swer and they have to look it up on the fly.

But they’re not just there in case they’re called on. They’re actively involved in the process and able to intervene.

The show’s official site, Jeopardy.com, offers an example: “If there’s ever a technical or scoring issue, the Judges’ Table will activate color-coded lights on Alex’s lectern so that he knows when a time-out may be needed to research a call.” This was obviously written a while ago when the late Alex Trebek still hosted.

Blood,” in 2019. People assumed the franchise was dead until, in the spring of 2018, “Last Blood” went into pre-production. It was released a little over a year later.

Stallone was able to turn it around so quickly because he’d been toying with the script, in his head at least, the whole time.

We’re in the exact same situation now with a theoretical “Rambo VI.” Stallone has said, since doing the promo tour for the previous film, that he has ideas for another sequel. He even went so far as to use it as leverage to get fans to purchase an extended cut of “Last Blood” released in 2020, saying on Ins-

That includes his Paramount+ crime show “Tulsa King,” which aired its second season last year and is being rumored for a renewal soon.

Meanwhile, he’s also producing a new boxing film called “Giant,” currently being filmed. It’s a biopic of the British fighter Naseem Hamed (played by Amir El-Masry, “The Night Manager,” 2016) and his coach, Brendan Ingle (Pierce Brosnan, “The World Is Not Enough,” 1999).
