Det. Alex Cross (Aldis Hodge, “City on a Hill”) returns for Season 2 of “Cross,” premiering its first three of eight episodes Wednesday, Feb. 11, on Prime Video. After saving his children and love interest (Samantha Walkes, “The Kings of Napa”) in Season 1, Cross once again teams up with FBI Special Agent Kyla Craig (Alona Tal, “Veronica Mars”), this time to track down a vigilante killer who has been murdering morally corrupt billionaires. Matthew Lillard (“Good Girls”) joins the Season 2 cast.

BBrains, brawn and billionaires

Killer targets big business in ‘Cross’ Season 2

illionaires are hardly a new concept — American oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller was the world’s first billionaire 110 years ago — but as business has continued to grow and capitalism perpetuates wealth among the wealthy, the world has more billionaires now than ever before.

According to an article published Jan. 19, on Oxfam.org, “billionaire wealth has increased by 81% since 2020,” with a 16% jump attributed to 2025 alone. A sizable socioeconomic disparity of this kind is enough to enrage and rouse the everyman into action, and that is exactly what D.C.-based Det. Alex Cross (Aldis Hodge, “City on a Hill”) must face when the series premieres its second season Wednesday, Feb. 11, on Prime Video.

Beginning with a whopping three-episode release, Season 2 of “Cross” focuses on a hunt to apprehend a female vigilante who has begun targeting America’s uber-rich. With a supposedly philanthropic CEO atop her sizeable hit list, Cross and the FBI have been called in to protect the country’s wealthy elite from the wrath of the mysterious woman picking them off one by one.

“‘Cross’ is a complex, twisted, pulse-pounding ... Washington, D.C., crime drama [that] follows Alex Cross, a brilliant homicide detective and forensic psychologist, uniquely capable of digging into the minds of murderers in order to identify and catch them,” says Prime Video. “In Season 2, Cross is in pursuit of a ruthless vigilante who is hunting down corrupt billionaire magnates.”

One such billionaire is new central character Lance Durand, played by “Good Girls” star and horror scream king Matthew Lillard. Described by Deadline as “a ruthless, self-made business tycoon,” Lance’s morals — or, more accurately, a lack thereof — have placed him squarely within the crosshairs of this season’s mysterious leading villain. Although very little has been shared to date about Lance’s personality traits, the Season 2 trailer positions him as something of a billionaire savior, showing the CEO at a large-scale event as he proclaims to the crowd that his company, Crestbrook Industries, “will end world hunger forever.”

Unfortunately, this kind of big thinking on the part of a corrupt businessman often comes with a hefty price tag for those of the less-privileged classes, which is no doubt part of our skilled killer’s driving force throughout the season. Lance, however, easily brushes off the threats as a hazard of his job: “In my position, you’re gonna make enemies along the way,” he casually tells law enforcement in the trailer.

Given the large, America-wide scale of the killer’s operation, Cross and D.C.’s Metropolitan Po-

lice Department are collaborating with the FBI this season. Leading the charge from the bureau’s side of the case is Special Agent Kayla Craig, played by returning cast member Alona Tal (“Veronica Mars”). “Cross” fans will remember Craig from the show’s first season, when she tried to recruit Cross for the FBI despite his clear allegiance to the MPD and dedication to finding the Fanboy Killer (Ryan Eggold, “New Amsterdam”).

Other cast members returning for the show’s sophomore season include Samantha Walkes (“The Kings of Napa”) as Elle Monteiro, Cross’ love interest who survived a harrowing abduction alongside Cross’ children, Damon (Caleb Elijah, “True Story”) and Janelle (Melody Hurd, “Them”), last season; Juanita Jennings (“Runaway Jury,” 2003) as Regina Cross, aka Nana Mama, Cross’ grandmother and the glue that keeps the Cross family together in hard times; Johnny Ray Gill (“Underground”) as disgraced former D.C. cop Bobby Trey Abellard, who worked with the Fanboy Killer in Season 1; and

Isaiah Mustafa (“It: Chapter Two,” 2019) as Det. John Sampson, Cross’ MPD partner and best friend, who, according to creator and showrunner Ben Watkins (“Burn Notice”), will be getting more attention in Season 2.

“We get to peel back a layer to John, where you get to see a little bit of his backstory and watch him deal with emotion,” said Watkins in an interview with Entertainment Weekly after the Season 1 finale in November 2024. “You’ve seen how good he is at holding his friend accountable and at helping his friend navigate deep emotions. You haven’t seen how he would do it if it was him having to confront it.”

But, Season 2 isn’t just about diving into the show’s existing characters (as much as we do love that we will get more of John across the next eight episodes). Joining Lillard among the Season 2 recruits are Wes Chatham (“The Expanse”) and actor/dancer Jeanine Mason (“So You Think You Can Dance”), who recently shared her involvement in the show with an Instagram post (@itsjeaninemason) of her in a sweater that

reads “in my villain era,” which is no doubt a clue as to who portrays Season 2’s so-called big bad.

“Cross” is based on the characters created by author James Patterson in his Alex Cross novel series, the first book of which was released in 1993. The beloved literary series is now home to 36 books, each of which serve as inspiration for the Prime series despite the television adaptation staying fairly original.

Don’t miss your shot to view the first three episodes of “Cross” Season 2 when they release Wednesday, Feb. 11, on Prime Video. The remaining five episodes of the season will release weekly until the March 18 finale.

Surgery with a twist

‘The Artful Dodger’ returns with Dawkins in turmoil

Wherever you go, your past will find you. This is very literally true for Jack Dawkins, a well-respected young surgeon in 1850s Australia whose dodgy early years in London can’t help but catch up to him. “The Artful Dodger,” a sequel story to Charles Dickens’ 1837 novel “Oliver Twist,” returns Tuesday, Feb. 10, for its second season on Disney+. All eight new episodes will be available to stream on premiere day.

Thomas Brodie-Sangster (“The Queen’s Gambit”) stars as Jack Dawkins, the eponymous Dodger, whose childhood as a pickpocket led him, predictably, to become a surgeon with the Royal Navy. Now an adult living in the Australian penal colony of Port Victory, halfway around the world from his humble beginnings in Britain, someone from Jack’s past life reappears and pops the bubble of respectability the surgeon had managed to build down under.

Dragging Jack back into a life of crime and convenient paydays is Norbert Fagin, portrayed by “Sherlock & Daughter” actor David Thewlis. Fagin, the ringleader of Jack’s childhood gang, entices his former prodigy to join him in a final heist in exchange for some much-needed funds. Of course, it all goes wrong, complicating Jack’s head surgeon aspirations.

Jack is not alone in dreaming of the head surgeon title — Lady Belle Fox (Maia Mitchell, “The Fosters”), the ambitious, self-taught daughter of the governor, sees herself in the role. The only things holding her back are societal norms, which she starts to bypass with Jack’s help teaching her the practical skills needed for surgery. The starcrossed lovers fall for each other but are separated by the end of the show’s first season.

Divided by their wildly different backgrounds, the upcoming season kicks off with Jack and Belle having both tried to solve the problem of Jack’s imminent hanging with very different tools. “I was so close to freeing you honorably,” Belle tells Jack in the official trailer for the new season. Clueless as to why Jack would resort to Fagin’s help in springing him from custody, Belle insists that they could earn a life together if only Jack could truly leave his past behind him.

Jack, however, sees the situation differently. “My lot don’t get futures,” he assures Belle, defending his choices, saying, “Fagin saved me from the rope. You left me in the dark.” While Fagin and Jack work to obtain Jack’s freedom, Belle’s mother makes the most of their differences and focuses on finding her daughter a respectable husband by any means necessary.

Lady Jane Fox (Susie Porter, “Apple Cider Vinegar”) has set some strict rules for her headstrong daughter. Belle is not to see Jack for two years and, in exchange, Jane will make her the colony’s

first female doctor. Meanwhile, Insp. Henry Boxer (Luke Bracey, “Point Break,” 2015) has his eyes on both Belle and Jack, for different reasons. A suitable high society match, Henry is interested in fulfilling Jane’s wishes and making Belle his wife. At the same time, Henry is after Jack, looking for any opportunity to eliminate his romantic competition by trying to catch him in the act of one of Fagin’s schemes.

While Jane insists that her orders are only to protect Belle, the restrictions are no match for true love. The pair manage to sneak time together at what else than a masquerade ball, as well as some other stolen moments. “I don’t have two years. I have now and I love you now,” Jack tries to reason with Belle in the trailer when the two have a moment alone to imagine what could be their future.

Brought together by a zest for life and shared passion for the rapidly developing world of surgery, Belle and Jack must weigh the risks that will come with being together and getting what they want against what is remarkably more easy.

As if that isn’t enough drama for one show, there is also a killer on the loose in Port Victory. With the new lawman, Insp. Boxer, already looking for reasons to rid the colony of the Dodger, one can only question how safe Jack is from being framed for murders he did not commit. In a time when surgeons were often associated with criminal activity like body snatching, it wouldn’t take much convincing to pin a violent crime on a practitioner.

Also returning to the cast are Tim Minchin (“Upright”) as Darius Cracksworth; Lucy-Rose Leonard (“Sleeping Dogs,” 2024) as Lady Fanny Fox; Nicholas Burton (“Pieces of Her”) as Dr. Rainsford Sneed; Kim Gyngell (“Love Me”) as Prof. Alistair McGregor and Luke Carroll (“Mystery Road: Origin”) as Tim Billiberllary. Joining the cast alongside Bracey are Jeremy Sims (“Mr. Inbetween”) as Uncle Dickie and Zac Burgess (“Cruel Intentions”) as Phineas Golden.

Don’t miss the premiere of the new season of “The Artful Dodger” when all eight episodes drop Tuesday, Feb. 10, on Disney+.

The untold story of basketball’s most revolutionary league comes to light in director Kenan Kamwana Holley’s (“30 for 30”) docuseries “Soul Power: The Legend of the American Basketball Association,” premiering Thursday, Feb. 12, on Prime Video. “Soul Power” tells the story of the American Basketball Association (ABA), tracing the league’s daring launch in 1967 and following its nine turbulent and groundbreaking seasons, during which a shifting collection of teams challenged the National Basketball Association (NBA). “Soul Power” explores the ABA’s lasting influence on the sport, from introducing the three-point shot and the slam dunk

contest to paving the way for franchises such as the Brooklyn Nets, Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers and San Antonio Spurs to join the NBA. Along the way, the docuseries will celebrate legendary players — including Julius Erving (“Philadelphia,” 1993), Spencer Haywood (“Full Court: The Spencer Haywood Story,” 2016), George Gervin (“Marty Supreme,” 2025), Rick Barry (“Uncle Drew,” 2018) and George Karl (“He Got Game,” 1998) — while highlighting how the league empowered women to take on larger roles in the business of basketball.

Q: Where are the stairs that Joaquin Phoenix dances on in “Joker”? Is it a set or do they actually exist?

A: The famous scene of Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix, “Gladiator,” 2000) dancing down an urban outdoor staircase in the 2019 smash hit “Joker” — which critics have said is meant to symbolize his descent into his criminal alterego, The Joker — was filmed on a real set of stairs in New York’s Bronx neighborhood.

Once known, uncreatively, as the West 167th Street Stairs, they’re now better known as just the Joker Stairs. They connect Shakespeare and Anderson avenues at — you guessed it — West 167th Street, but they have grown into much more than a pass-through: they have become a major tourist attraction in a city full of them. Attention reached the extent that local residents and officials started asking people to give it a rest.

The stairs now have their own page on Tripadvisor.com, though the locals seem to have gotten their wish: tourist discussion of the Joker Stairs seems to have waned in recent years. That makes sense. The film was an absolute cultural phenomenon when it came out — a rare example of a comic-book movie (the Joker, of course, exists in DC Comics’ Batman universe) that won artistic Oscars and also cleaned up at the box office — but that was seven years ago.

A disappointing sequel — 2024’s “Joker: Folie a Deux” — also featured the same stairs, but

it was a critical and commercial flop, so it did nothing to rekindle popular interest.

Q: Nicholas Hoult did the movie “Renfield,” and then “Nosferatu” right afterward. Are they part of a series? They don’t seem like it. Is he doing more?

A: Nicholas Hoult (“The Great”) did indeed jump from one vampire movie, 2023’s “Renfield,” right into another with 2024’s “Nosferatu,” and his roles were at least similar. However, the two films have nothing else to do with each other, and he has no plans to dip back into vampire cinema.

In fact, he said the reason he took on “Nosferatu” so soon after “Renfield” is because, as you say, the two films are so very different. And because he really wanted to work with director Robert Eggers (“The Lighthouse,” 2019).

“Honestly, I wasn’t looking to go back into the vampire world again,” Hoult told Total Film, “but [Eggers’] style and tone are just so completely the opposite of [“Renfield”], and I’m such a fan of his work that I’m excited to be in his world and watching him and learning from him.”

To be specific, “Renfield” takes the Dracula story originally written by Bram Stoker in the 19th century and turns it into something like a modern workplace comedy, whereas “Nosferatu” is a deadly serious gothic fantasy. In both, Hoult plays a sort of audience surrogate — a relatively normal human who is thrust into conflict with the supernatural.

Having thus very efficiently covered both extremes of vampire storytelling, Hoult seems to have moved on from the genre, at least for now.

He’s since been keeping busy with the comic book kind of fantasy, playing supervillain Lex Luthor in 2025’s big-screen hit “Superman” and TV series “The Peacemaker.” He has another one lined up: 2027’s “Superman” sequel, “Man of Tomorrow.”

In the meantime, he’ll be starring in the much more ground-level action flick “How to Rob a Bank,” about bank robbers posting their heists on social media. That one’s due out this September.

Q: Is Seth Rogen coming back for more of “The Studio”?

A: He seems to be having too much fun to quit now.

Seth Rogen (“Superbad,” 2007), who created and stars in the Apple TV series “The Studio,” was quoted by Variety magazine last month as saying that filming of a second season was about to start.

He was speaking backstage at the Golden Globes, where the show won the award for best comedy or musical series. And yes, he did mention the fact that it was weird to win a Golden Globe for a show that, for a whole episode, made fun of the Golden Globes.

That’s the fun of “The Studio”: it’s a big, Hollywood show that makes fun of big, Hollywood movies.

And it gets big stars to do it, including Rogen himself. He’s more in demand than ever, with more than a dozen projects on the go, either as a writer, producer or actor. But “The Studio” seems to be his main focus.

It’s not clear when Season 2 will premiere. Season 1 debuted last March, so it’s clearly going to miss that window if it just started shooting in January. But IMDb and other sources say it’s still targeting a 2026 release.
