TFather, widower, killer Dempsey, Imperioli make ‘Memory’ together

here is a quote, often attributed to John Lennon, that states that “life is what happens when you are busy making other plans.” The turn of phrase — which actually stemmed from American writer and cartoonist Allen Saunders some 23 years before Lennon’s lyric in the 1980 song “Beautiful Boy” — is often used in a positive, meaningful way, as if to say, “be patient and good things will come your way when they are meant to find you.”

Unfortunately, life doesn’t exclusively dish out good news.

In Fox’s newest thriller series, “Grey’s Anatomy” alum Patrick Dempsey stars as Angelo, a New York City hitman whose life takes a dramatic turn when he is diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s.

“Memory of a Killer” premieres Sunday, Jan. 25, on Fox.

Based on the Belgian action thriller film “De zaak Alzheimer” from 2003, which was also titled “La Memoire du tueur” in French, “Memory of a Killer” consists of 10 episodes in its first season and makes for a heartfelt and exciting addition to Fox’s prime-time lineup.

“’Memory of a Killer’ is a propulsive series with a noisy, unrelenting character hook that immediately grabbed our attention,” said Michael Thorn, Fox Television Network president, in a press statement announcing the show. “In the spirit of ‘24’ and ‘House,’ we’re introducing a daring new signature Fox lead, a complicated antihero facing unimaginable danger. We’re excited to bring this gripping new thriller to life alongside our long-standing partners at Warner Bros.”

Angelo, the series’ aforementioned “antihero,” strikes a familiar chord with fans of the crime genre. Despite earning the bulk of his money through illegal means, Angelo has managed to keep that part of his life a secret from his family by maintaining his facade as a photocopier salesman. But when his wife dies and his daughter is put in danger, Angelo’s mask begins to slip. Things become even more complicated when the detail-oriented hitman realizes his memory, too, is beginning to fail him.

“Alzheimer’s is a foe he can’t outrun,” the Fox description begins, “and he knows too well how this ends, as his older brother is already lost to the condition.

“Angelo is exceptionally resourceful and talented, the best of the best. But he’s about to be tested like never before — and now every minute counts,” the official series description continues. “This is only made more difficult when he discovers that his wife’s recent death may

not have been an accident. So when someone comes after his daughter — who is pregnant — it’s clear the wall between his lives has been breached. ... Now Angelo must hunt down his mortal enemy while continuing to carry out hits without giving away his diagnosis and still making it home in time to cook dinner for his daughter.”

Joining Dempsey on screen is a familiar face in “The White Lotus” star Michael Imperioli, who portrays Angelo’s friend and boss, Dutch. Returning to a gritty role that would fit right into the world of “The Sopranos,” the early-’00s HBO sensation in which the actor played budding mobster Christopher Moltisanti, Imperioli’s Dutch is a talented chef who uses his Bronx-based Italian restaurant as a front for his criminal enterprise. Importantly, despite Angelo repeatedly putting his faith in his friend, Dutch hasn’t exactly earned anyone’s trust.

Odeya Rush (“Lady Bird,” 2017) also joins the cast of “Memory of a Killer,” as announced in July. Having previously starred in a gamut of

projects, including a 2011 episode of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and the 2023 conspiracy thriller “Dangerous Waters,” among others, Rush portrays Angelo’s daughter, Maria. “Married young and pregnant, it seems she’s chosen a quiet life,” reads Maria’s character description, as provided by Deadline in July. “But something stirs in her — a yearning for adventure. Might she be a chip off the old hitman block? Angelo is Maria’s everything, so when his mind begins to falter, she’s right there by his side to care for him. As she gets closer and closer to her father, she’ll find that being close to Angelo is a dangerous place to be.”

Other supporting characters include Joe, Angelo’s equally criminal co-worker, played by Richard Harmon (“Final Destination: Bloodlines,” 2025); Jeff (Daniel David Stewart, “Reacher”), Maria’s unemployed inventor husband and the father of her child; Dave (Peter Gadiot, “Queen of the South”), a blissfully unaware local detective whom Angelo befriended following the death of his wife a few years ear-

lier; and Special Agent Linda Grant, played by “Suits” and “9-1-1: Lone Star” actress Gina Torres, a determined and talented FBI operative who has become suspicious of Angelo while investigating one of his kills.

“’Memory of a Killer’ is a redemptive story about a man who is losing his memory but gaining a conscience,” says the Fox press release. “Angelo knows he must stop history from repeating itself and save his family — before he forgets the past.”

Don’t miss your shot to get inside the “Memory of a Killer.” The first two episodes of the 10-episode series air across two nights starting Sunday, Jan. 25, on Fox.

One enchanted evening

Sparks fly at the masquerade in new ‘Bridgerton’

Asizzling new season of regency romance is here to melt away the icy winter blues and thaw cold hearts. “Bridgerton” returns to Netflix with Season 4, Part 1, on Thursday, Jan. 29. A new chapter begins as the second-eldest of the Bridgerton children, Benedict (Luke Thompson, “Transatlantic”), sets his love story in motion.

Eyes meet at Lady Bridgerton’s masquerade ball in a teaser for the upcoming season, and Benedict quickly becomes intrigued by a mysterious, beautiful stranger dressed in silver. Heated glances from behind elegant masks and chaste, gloved hand grazes on a grand staircase are exchanged between the two in the teaser, shrouding the woman’s identity in secrecy beyond a forgotten evening glove. A new arrival to the very busy and interconnected social circle that Benedict was born into, Sophie Baek (Yerin Ha, “Dune: Prophecy”) found a different way into the ball.

It is a real Cinderella story — Sophie is not one of the many debutantes who accept any London high society event invitation, or even a member of Benedict’s preferred bohemian social scene. She is a maid who works for Lady Araminta Gun (Katie Leung, “The Wheel of Time”), something Benedict only finds out about Sophie once he coerces his sister Eloise (Claudia Jessie, “Toxic Town”) into helping him track her down.

With help from other members of Araminta’s staff, Sophie pulls together a costume for the masquerade ball and is sent on her way with the warning to leave the party by, of course, midnight. Sophie seems happy to just observe the grandeur from the sidelines, however the dominos of her risky romance begin to fall when Benedict notices her and asks Sophie for a dance.

The undercover maid tries her best to refuse the invitation, but her reluctance only further captivates Benedict. Soon, the pair are dancing alone outside where Benedict, far from the gossiping ears of the Ton, is more free to share his honest feelings with his dance partner. “You are perhaps the most intriguing person I’ve ever met,” Benedict confesses. How can a lady resist that?

While Sophie has dreams beyond serving Araminta, the lady of the house has little clue that her maid is appearing as an eligible woman as she’s presenting her own two daughters, eager to have them married off this season. Rosamund Li, portrayed by Michelle Mao (“A Big Bold Beautiful Journey,” 2025), is Araminta’s eldest daughter, whose

determination is matched by her beauty. Also debuting is Rosamund’s younger, kinder sister, Posy Li (Isabella Wei, “Black Doves”).

Though his mother, Violet Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell, “Penny Dreadful”), has plans for Benedict this social season — “you simply must marry, you have not met the right young lady,” she tells him in the new season’s official trailer — he sees himself as less of an eligible bachelor and more of another type of romance novel staple. “You’re a rake,” Penelope (Nicola Coughlan, “Derry Girls”) and Eloise declare to him in unison in the trailer, referring to his preference for short-lived romances with no expectations.

Despite his reputation, Rosamund has set her sights on Benedict. It keeps him in Sophie’s peripheral, too, however he doesn’t connect his fantasy of the woman in silver from the masquerade to the maid of a house he’s been invited to in order to court another. Sophie and Benedict come from such different worlds even if they shared a dance, something that Thompson told Tudum.

“You have to hold both of them — the romance and the reality — in your hand. In its best version, ‘true love’ happens in the middle of that.”

The actress portraying the other half of this season’s true love story also spoke to Tudum about her role. “What drew me to Sophie was that she immediately has obstacles — something that she constantly has to overcome,” Ha told the Netflix outlet. “Whether it’s this battle around social status or trying to hide her feelings from Benedict.”

Returning Bridgertons include Jonathan Bailey (“Wicked: For Good,” 2025) as Anthony Bridgerton; Simone Ashley (“F1: The Movie,” 2025) as Kate Bridgerton; Florence Hunt (“Mix Tape”) as Hyacinth Bridgerton; Luke Newton (“The Lodge”) as Colin Bridgerton; and Will Tilston (“Goodbye Christopher Robin,” 2017) as Gregory Bridgerton.

The iconic three-tiered kitchen returns, when Season 5 of “Next Level Chef” makes its debut Thursday, Jan. 29, on Fox. Led by celebrity chefs Gordon Ramsay (“Hell’s Kitchen”), Nyesha Arrington (“Tournament of Champions”) and Richard Blais (“MasterChef”), this one-of-akind cooking competition asks talented chefs to take part in a culinary gauntlet that will either make their careers or break them entirely as they’re mentored by the greats in a series of increasingly complicated challenges. As always, the competitors will be split into three teams and will have to navigate “Next Level Chef’s” three-tiered kitchen, with each level offering its

own advantages and disadvantages — “from the glistening top floor to the challenging bottom of the basement,” explains Variety. In the end, one chef will walk away with an impressive $250,000 grand prize.

After “Next Level Chef” was announced to return for a fifth and sixth season (coming soon to a screen near you), with Season 5 slated to premiere in the wake of the series’ spinoff, “Next Level Baker,” Michael Thorn, president of

Fox Television Network, shared: “‘Next Level Chef’ consistently raises the bar of culinary excellence as a highstakes food competition fans love, an invaluable franchise for Fox and an increasingly popular global format. Extending the reach of this series with the new holiday competition ‘Next Level Baker’ once again exemplifies the strength of our incredible, longstanding collaborative partnership with Gordon, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.”

WHAT’S NEW ON DISNEY+

“Wonder Man” - Season 1

A struggling actor’s shot at stardom takes an unexpected turn when fiction starts to feel dangerously real in Season 1 of “Wonder Man,” premiering Tuesday, Jan. 27, on Disney+. Aspiring actor Simon Williams (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, “Aqua Man,” 2018) can’t seem to catch his big break in Hollywood, drifting from audition to audition with little to show for it. But a chance encounter with Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley, “Iron Man 3,” 2013) changes everything when Simon learns that Von Kovak (Zlatko Buric, “Superman,” 2025) is rebooting the cult superhero film “Wonder Man.” Suddenly, two actors at opposite ends of their careers are chasing the same potentially life-altering opportunity. As the production moves forward, Simon begins to notice startling changes within himself that go far beyond method acting. Caught between fame, failure and a growing sense of responsibility, Simon must reckon with what it truly means to become a hero — both on screen and in real life. Created by Destin Daniel Cretton (“The Glass Castle,” 2017) and Andrew Guest (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”), “Wonder Man” stars X Mayo (“American Auto”), Arian Moayed (“Succession”) and Demetrius Grosse (“Banshee”), with Stephen Broussard (“The Incredible Hulk,” 2008) serving as the series’ executive producer.

WHAT’S NEW ON APPLE TV

“Shrinking” - Season 3

Loss, forgiveness and uneasy new beginnings are in store with Apple TV’s comedy “Shrinking,” which is set to return for a third season on Wednesday, Jan. 28. Season 2 ended on a forgiving note for Jimmy (Jason Segel, “Windfall,” 2022), who saved Louis (Brett Goldstein, “Ted Lasso”) — the man responsible for his wife Tia’s (Lilan Bowden, “NCIS”) death — from dying by suicide on the train tracks, while beginning to repair his relationship with his daughter Alice (Lukita Maxwell, “Generation”). Season 3 finds Jimmy facing the next stage of his life as Alice leaves for college, forcing him to reckon

with the quiet of an empty nest. At the same time, he cautiously steps towards a new connection with Sofi (Cobie Smulders, “Safe Haven,” 2013), though it’s guided — sometimes awkwardly — by neighbors Derek (Ted McGinley, “Silent Thunder,” 2023) and Liz (Christa Miller, “Scrubs”). This season also introduces a poignant guest appearance from Michael J. Fox (“Zootopia 2,” 2025), seen in the official trailer in a waiting room sitting next to Paul (Harrison Ford, “1923”), who quietly admits he’s seeing a doctor about Parkinson’s disease. Co-created by Segel, alongside “Ted Lasso’s” Goldstein and Bill Lawrence, this season also stars Jessica Williams (“Love Life”) as Gaby, Luke Tennie (“Abbott Elementary”) as Sean and Michael Urie (“Ugly Betty”) as Brian.

WHAT’S NEW ON PRIME VIDEO

“The Wrecking Crew” (2026)

Family secrets erupt when “The Wrecking Crew” premieres on Prime Video Wednesday, Jan. 28, following two estranged half-brothers, Jonny (Jason Momoa, “Game of Thrones”) and James (Dave Bautista, “Guardians of the Galaxy,” 2014), as they’re forced to reunite after their father’s mysterious death. As they dig for the truth, long-buried secrets reveal a conspiracy that threatens to tear their family apart. Set in the streets of Hawaii, the film is directed by Angel Manuel Soto (“Blue Beetle,” 2023) and stars Claes Bang (“The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” 2018), Temuera Morrison (“Chief

of War”), Jacob Batalon (“Spider-Man: Homecoming,” 2017), Frankie Adams (“The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart”), Miyavi (“Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” 2019), Stephen Root (“Barry”), Morena Baccarin (“Deadpool,” 2016) and more. “The Wrecking Crew” is written by Jonathan Tropper (“Banshee”) and produced by Momoa, Bautista, Jeffrey Fierson (“Atlas,” 2024), Matt Reeves (“The Batman,” 2022) and Lynn Harris (“About a Boy,” 2002).

WHAT’S NEW ON NETFLIX

“Take That”

“From the beginning, there was something within us that wanted to prove something,” Mark Owen (“The Three Musketeers,” 2011) says in the first trailer for the Netflix docuseries “Take That.” Premiering on the streamer Tuesday, Jan. 27, “Take That” charts the rise, fall and record-breaking reunion of one of the U.K.’s most iconic boy bands. Fans can expect to see the band’s long journey and personal relationships with each other over three episodes, using never-before-seen interviews and rare archival footage captured over 35 years. “From their early beginnings as a five piece formed in Manchester to becoming pop superstars,” the synopsis

reads, “relive the camaraderie, chaos and resilience that fueled their meteoric rise, dramatic split and one of the greatest comebacks in British music history.” Directed by David Soutar (“Bros: After the Screaming Stops,” 2018) and executive produced by Gabe Turner (“Untold”), “Take That” features all five members: Owen, Robbie Williams (“Better Man,” 2024), Gary Barlow (“Kingsman: The Secret Service,” 2014), Jason Orange (“Stardust,” 2007) and Howard Donald (“X-Men: First Class,” 2011). Told in their own words, this is the deeply personal and definitive story of Take That.

WHAT’S NEW ON PARAMOUNT+ “School Spirits” - Season 3

Split River High was built on secrets, and Season 3 starts digging for answers when “School Spirits” returns to Paramount+ Wednesday, Jan. 28, with the season’s first three episodes. Season 2 ended with Maddie (Peyton List, “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days,” 2012) ripping her way back to the living world after uncovering the truth behind her possession — but the victory was incomplete. The school’s body count still didn’t add up, Mr. Martin’s (Josh Zuckerman, “Feast,” 2005) cryptic warnings lingered and Simon (Kristian Ventura, “Gray Matter,” 2023) was left stranded on the wrong side of existence, obsessed with what the ghosts were still hiding. Season 3 plunges Maddie into a darker reckoning. Haunted by violent visions and the responsibility of guarding both worlds, she races to uncover why Split River High breeds death. With Simon digging deeper into the school’s scars and danger closing in from both sides, survival may demand sacrifices no one is ready to make. “School Spirits” also stars Milo Manheim (“Thanksgiving,” 2023), Nick Pugliese (“13 Reasons Why”), Kiara Pichardo (“The Society”), Sarah Yarkin (“Happy Death Day 2U,” 2019) and Rainbow Wedell (“The Bureau of Magical Things”). Created by Nate (“Robin Hood,” 2018) and Megan Trinrud (“Made in Hollywood”), the pair serves as co-showrunners and executive producers.

Q: In the first season of “Roseanne,” the boss at Wellman Plastics was Booker, played by George Clooney. Later, they had a new boss, Mr. Faber, but they never explained what happened to Booker. What happened to him at Wellman?

A: Despite being played by one of today’s most famous people, George Clooney (“Ocean’s Eleven,” 2001), Booker was only ever a minor character on “Roseanne.” And, in fact, Clooney wasn’t even famous at the time. So it’s not surprising that the show’s writers never bothered to close out his story.

He was their boss, and he later started dating one of the main characters, Jackie (Laurie Metcalf, “Lady Bird,” 2017). At the end of the first season, when Roseanne (Roseanne Barr, “Look Who’s Talking Too,” 1990) and company are gathered at their local bar after quitting their jobs, he’s there, too, and says he’s also “unemployed.”

That led to a popular fan theory: Booker got busted for dating a subordinate, contrary to workplace policy, and was fired, leading to his replacement by the bullying Mr. Faber (Fred Dalton Thompson, “The Hunt for Red October,” 1990). The fact that Booker says he’s unemployed suggests he didn’t leave Wellman Plastics by choice. Again, though, this is just speculation.

All that happens in the Season 1 finale, and it’s the last we see of Booker for years. He pops into the show once more, briefly, in Season 4, to cheer up Jackie at a Halloween party.

By this point, Clooney was still struggling to find his big break. He was taking bit parts and one-offs, though the following year (1992), his short-lived cop show, “Bodies of Evidence,” debuted on CBS. Then in 1994, he would start his run on the smash-hit NBC medical drama “ER,” and go from there to superstardom.

Q: I loved Alan Tudyk in “Firefly,” and I know he has gotten into voice work recently, but has he done any other TV shows?

A: This is a classic good-news/bad-news situation. The good news is yes, Alan Tudyk — who played wisecracking pilot Wash in the cult-classic sci-fi series “Firefly” from 2002 to 2003 — has gotten another crack at sci-fi series glory with the USA Network/Syfy dramedy “Resident Alien.” But the bad news is: you already missed it.

“Resident Alien’s” fourth and final season finished airing in August.

He played an alien who crash-lands on Earth and begins masquerading as a small-town Colorado doctor. Hard sci-fi with a wacky edge is very much Tudyk’s wheelhouse, and he won a lot of acclaim for his performance.

“Resident Alien” was the most successful of his post-“Firefly” live-action TV projects, but it wasn’t the only one. He was also a chief support on the ABC sitcom “Suburgatory” from 2011 to 2014, and had the lead in the Adult Swim newsparody show “Newsreaders” from 2013 to 2015. Directly after that, he starred in the streaming comedy “Con Man” from 2015 to 2017.

Amid all this activity, as you say, he launched an even more successful voice career. As a sci-fi fan, you may have heard him in 2016’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” or 2004’s “I, Robot.”

Q: Is Steve Martin doing anything these days besides “Only Murders in the Building”? And also, out of curiosity, has he ever played a bad guy?

A: Writing, producing and starring in the Hulu comedy series “Only Murders in the Building” has been taking up all of Steve Martin’s acting energy since it debuted in 2021. He hasn’t done much other screen work since, besides taking bows on talk shows and awards broadcasts.

But the screen has only ever been part of Martin’s (“Roxanne,” 1987) career. He started out as a stand-up comedian, and lately has more than

dabbled in being an author, playwright and professional musician.

The second part of your question is a little less easy to answer — and, in fact, it’s almost a philosophical problem.

There is an easy answer: he famously played an out-and-out villain in 1986’s “Little Shop of Horrors,” doing a supporting role as a sadistic dentist and romantic rival to the lead character (Rick Moranis, “Spaceballs,” 1987).

But you didn’t say “villain,” you said “bad guy,” and Martin’s characters are almost always ethically or morally ambiguous, at least.

Was he a bad guy in “The Jerk” (1979), his breakout film, in which he played a naive country boy who moves to the city and annoys the life out of everyone he meets along the way? Was he bad in “My Blue Heaven” (1990), playing a mobster in witness protection who annoys the life out of the FBI agent (Moranis, again) assigned to him? I could go on, but the point is, none of Martin’s characters are fully good or bad. Even his “Only Murders” character, washed-up actor CharlesHaden Savage, is often egotistic and self-serving. The fact that he wrote that role himself (as he did with “The Jerk,” for that matter) suggests he knows that’s his strong suit — making hard-tolove characters lovable.
