By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com After nearly 39 years working at the Yorkville-Bristol Sanitary District, the past seven as its executive director, Kevin Collman is retiring at the end of this month.

Replacing him will be Cyrus W. McMains, a professional civil engineer with 17 years of experience in various firms, including Walter E. Deuchler Associates, the sanitary district’s consulting firm. McMains, a Naperville resident, earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Bradley University in Peoria in 1999.

McMains said he has worked with the sanitary district in the past, including designing a proposed expansion of the plant during the homebuilding boom. He praised the culture at the district.

“I got a chance to work under [former Executive Director] Ralph [Pfister] and Kevin and sort of be indoctrinated under their thinking and how they approach things,” McMains said.

“What they have here is a great operation and a great culture... I hope to carry on that tradition here.”

Collman started his career as an operator at the sanitary district in 1978.

He said a friend of his who worked at the plant, Jim Mauser, encouraged him to apply.

“He said I’m going to be leaving, and you should go over and apply for the job,” Collman said. “I said, well, I don’t know, maybe. About the third time he says, you need to go and apply for the job, so I did. I had no idea what I was in for. Turned out nice; it’s been a great career.”

Collman said when he started at the plant, located on River Road in Yorkville, he didn’t know what an operator did and had on-the-job training.

“It ended up being all on-the-job training and short classes, school, and it became very interesting,” he said.

Eventually, he realized the job’s influence.

“I finally realized after several years that I’m really making a difference in the environment every single day of the year,” he said. “I have that opportunity to think about it and make a difference, and that was pretty cool

and still is pretty cool. The 39 years have gone by very quickly, because it’s very interesting to me.”

Collman worked as a plant operator until 2010, when Ralph Pfister retired as executive director. Pfister had been the district’s executive director since 1974.

Collman said the executive director position is still a hands-on job.

“The operator part hasn’t left,” he said. “You’re still involved in operations, even in this position.”

Collman said the district’s three-member board of trustees trusts the plant staff to consider new technology.

“They let us look at new things,” he said. “We talk about things and if there’s new technology we look at that to see if there’s a benefit to us, and we’ll embark on it. That’s nice.”

Collman said the biggest change while he was at Yorkville-Bristol was “moving from manual labor to mechanical.” Collman said the plant, for example, used to remove water from its solids on sludge drying beds outside, which would be a challenge in the northern Illinois winters.

“So it evolved to mechanical dewatering inside, where you could dewater anytime you wanted to, no matter what the weather was,” he said. “And that was great in a couple different aspects.

You essentially don’t have as much solids to handle, because they are more concentrated. But then that brings a different set of problems, with mechanical dewatering and technology in general, because you have electronics and all that stuff that goes with it.”

The final project Collman has overseen before he steps out the door is

an expansion at the plant using membrane biotechnology, which is different than the full expansion that was proposed years ago during the housing boom.

“We thought, let’s take a step back here and think about this,” he said.

“The trustees made the right decision not to move forward with it, because there’s just not going to be the rate payers there, there’s not going to be the flow there.”

Instead, Collman said the expansion they are working on will “increase our capacity in certain aspects within the existing footprint” of the River Road plant. He said the project would cost around $7 million to $8 million, compared to the full expansion cost of $25 million. The cost will come out of capital improvement funds the district has on hand from saving for the full-scale expansion, so user rates will not be impacted, he said.

One aspect the district has prided itself on is the lack of noticeable odor coming from the facility. Collman credits the team of people working at the plant to help keep it odor free.

“Every plant’s different,” he said.

“Some plants may contribute more to odors than other plants. Just happens to be that our plant, the things that we do, we seem to be able to control them well, to where we don’t get those odors.

So we’re fortunate in that respect.

And there’s good people that we work with – engineers, contractors – who all make a difference; they’re all part of the equation.”

Brent Ekwinski, president of the Yorkville-Bristol Sanitary District Board, said Collman brought a lot of institutional knowledge to the table, having worked at the plant for so long. He said Collman and his crew also have taken pride in their work.

“They’ve treated that plant like it was their baby,” Ekwinski said. “It wasn’t just a job, it was, hey, I want to make it look nice, I want to make it run well. So the guys really took pride in their work, Kevin especially along that line.”

Hultgren said he agreed there should be a law in place requiring presidential candidates to disclose their tax returns, and he defended a procedural vote against requiring Trump to do so

because the election was over.

“In America, we have ex post facto – we cannot go backwards,” Hultgren said.

When asked whether he would take steps to impeach Trump if an investigation showed collusion between Trump and Russia to influence the election, Hultgren said, “What I’m going to do

is my job.”

“I absolutely don’t trust Russia.

They are not our friend,” Hultgren said. “I’m going to do everything I can to protect you. My allegiance is to you.”

Hultgren came to the forum after weeks of protests from constituents demanding a public town hall at his Campton Hills district office.

Among the constituents who attended was Linda Ottum of Huntley, who said she was happy to see that Hultgren finally agreed to a meeting with his constituents.

“I’m frightened for what’s happening in our country right now,” Ottum said. “I wish the people that we’re sending to Congress would work with one another across the aisle and try compromising instead of being in their own little factions. Nothing is getting done when they’re working that way.”

Ottum said when she was young, Democrats and Republicans worked together.

“And now it’s so polarized that the people are not being served because of this type of action,” Ottum said.

Officials propose closure of old Route 47 rest area

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Kendall County Forest Preserve District Board members and the district’s executive director discussed Tuesday the possible closure of an old rest stop at the southwest corner of Route 47 and Galena Road.

Forest Preserve Executive Director David Guritz has proposed allowing only authorized county vehicles, such as Highway Department snowplows, to enter the area. The proposal includes the removal of asphalt and reconfiguring the area’s two entrances to just one entrance.

Guritz said the most common use of the rest area is for truck drivers, who pull into it and use it to rest overnight and during the day.

However, during Tuesday’s discussion, board member John Purcell said he would rather the area stay open. He said he would rather have truck drivers park there and rest instead of driving tired on the roadways.

Guritz said the Forest Preserve District doesn’t allow overnight parking on any of its other properties.

He also questioned the benefit of keeping the area open as another property for forest preserve staff to maintain.

“We don’t allow semis to come into forest preserve areas,” he said. “It’s a real question for me of what the benefit is of this particular area in terms of public use, other than pulling off and us having another area to maintain when we’re struggling just keeping up with basic needs.”

Guritz said the closure “seems like a win-win from the standpoint of public safety, enforcement, and utility.”

“There are plenty of forest preserve areas that the public can enjoy,” he said. “This five-acre parcel I really don’t think adds value or benefit to the residents of Kendall County.”

During the discussion, board member Bob “H.D.” Davidson insisted that the property is owned not by the Forest Preserve District, but by Kendall County.

“This property belongs to the county, not the forest preserve,” Davidson said.

Guritz said after the meeting that he understood the state of Illinois conveyed the property via quit

claim deed following the Illinois Department of Transportation’s closure of the rest stop in 1984. He said records confirming the transfer of ownership were still being researched.

Board President Judy Gilmour asked about the project’s cost. Guritz said the cost would largely be absorbed by the county Highway Department.

Board member Matt Kellogg said he would like the issue to come before the County Board’s Highway Committee, as the closure would use Highway Department dollars. Kellogg is the Highway Committee chairman.

County Engineer Fran Klaas said he doesn’t know the cost of such a project, but said the department is interested in keeping the parcel for a turnaround area for snowplow trucks.

The board voted to table, or postpone, the issue and the County Board’s Highway Committee can take it up at a future meeting. Purcell, Gilmour, Kellogg, Davidson, Scott Gryder and Lynn Cullick voted to table, while Elizabeth Flowers voted against it. Board members Audra Hendrix and Tony Giles were absent from Tuesday’s meeting.

ST. CHARLES – U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, faced a frequently raucous crowd of more than 500 people at a question-and-answer forum April 18 at the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles.

Hosted by five League of Women Voters groups, Hultgren fielded questions for 90 minutes on topics such as forcing President Donald Trump to release his tax returns, requiring insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions, and abstinence-only sex education.

“I am committed to voting no,” Hultgren said, if a health care bill is presented that would allow insurance companies to deny coverage because of pre-existing conditions. “I have been very upfront about this. ... The current system we’ve got is not working like we thought it could.”

But when Hultgren said health care reform could be done through a marketplace with options, it was met with boos and people holding up red cards – a symbol of disagreement.

Whether he would support single-payer Medicare for all, Hultgren responded: “I think Medicare is great.

I don’t think it’s the only answer out there.” Booing commenced again.

To a question about why he co-sponsored a sex education bill, which was opposed by the American Medical Association – because of the abstinence-only aspect of it – Hultgren said there was room for both types of sex education.

“We want our kids to be healthy and safe,” Hultgren said. “I think it’s a

Sharing of staff, resources can net savings The pols on both sides of the aisle in Springfield like to talk up the merits of consolidating and reducing the more than 7,000 local governmental agencies across the state to save beleaguered taxpayers some money.

So far the talk has been just that – talk. But we’ve noticed that locally, officials in Oswego, Yorkville and Montgomery are already taking positive steps to share resources in an effort to reduce their costs for providing services.

As we reported earlier this year,

Oswego’s and Montgomery’s public works departments worked together this past winter to de-ice streets in the two villages. Oswego’s public works department produced a de-icing liquid that Montgomery’s public works department used to clear ice from local streets. In return, Montgomery’s public works crews applied the liquid to select Oswego streets.

Earlier this month we reported that Oswego and Yorkville have hired a purchasing manager, Annie Callahan of Oswego, who is now working for

both municipalities. As part of her job, Callahan is reviewing existing contracts for both municipalities with an eye towards cost savings. Her responsibilities also include seeking out additional shared services and joint purchasing opportunities. While Callahan is classified as an employee of Oswego, she is splitting her work time between the two municipalities and Yorkville is paying half of her employment costs.

We can remember a time not so long ago when there was actually a level

of distrust among the leaders of local communities as they often found themselves competing against each other to lure tax generating retail stores and other businesses. But in recent years, we are pleased to report, cooler heads have prevailed and now there is a genuine spirit of cooperation between Oswego, Montgomery and Yorkville.

For the sake of local taxpayers, we hope it will continue, because continued sharing of employees and the joint delivery of services present a real opportunity for cost savings.

What Harold Lloyd and Adolf Hitler had in common It’s been April for a couple weeks now, Major League Baseball is well under way, flowers are starting to bloom, and so it looks like spring is actually here – April showers and all that.

As we all know, April showers (the rain, not snow variety) bring May flowers. Rain in April is vital if groundwater is to be recharged. And besides, it sort of washes things off a bit after they’ve gotten dusty and dirty during the winter months. All that wind in March doesn’t just dry out the ground; it also circulates a good bit of topsoil around the countryside making for a dingy look to the landscape.

In April, gardening plans are maturing, the best of the seed catalogs having already arrived and their wares carefully checked. Spring housecleaning – which some folks still do, by the way – is either started or at least being contemplated. With last week’s Easter celebration, we can make one last check around the yard just to be sure we got ALL the Easter eggs we hid, or the Easter bunny hid, or whatever.

And with all this hubbub, the old world just keeps spinning. The sun rises, the moon sets and the mail arrives daily (except Sundays), toted along by those intrepid postal carriers. There’s always something interesting to see in the mail, even the junk mail variety.

Here, for instance, are a few things I never would have found out if I hadn’t opened all the mail that shows up here out in front of the Matile Manse each day the mail carrier arrives: Actor Clark Gable – born William Clark Gable – worked in a tire factory and as a lumberjack before becoming an actor.

Across the country this month, the sounds of Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance” will be followed by the cheers and throwing of caps as millions of new college graduates celebrate the achievement of a higher education degree.

While obtaining a degree has its many challenges, the new graduate now faces an even bigger hurdle: Competing for jobs in what remains to be a tight job market. But a prepared few will have a leg up on their peers – those who have completed internships are more likely to get hired.

Today’s employers expect new hires to possess soft skills and to begin adding value to the company from day one.

For new graduates, the best preparation for meeting this expectation is to have had one or more internships while in school.

Internships are experiential learning opportunities where students

These experiences help round out a student’s learning by engaging them in real-time problem solving, presenting them with communication styles and methods, and improving their teamwork and leadership skills.

According to a recent study by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, nearly 73 percent of students who completed an internship received a job offer.

In a competitive job market, having at least one internship on a résumé greatly improves a student’s odds of being employed within six months of graduation.

No longer are internships an

expectation only for those majoring in the hard sciences or finance and accounting. Experiential learning opportunities are ideal for students of all majors who can demonstrate to employers “real skills” acquired through internships.

Traditionally, internships often were left to the last semester senior year. Not anymore. Today, professionals working in Career Services on college campuses tout the importance of obtaining an internship as soon as one’s sophomore or junior year. Aside from the necessary experience and skill development, internships prove invaluable to a student’s career decision-making path.

For many students, the experience of an internship can be life-changing as they discover professional interests and avenues they never before considered.

Employers also increasingly support this pathway, as data shows cost

savings over time when hired interns are easily converted into full-time employees.

At Waubonsee Community College, students are encouraged to explore internship opportunities early on.

Through faculty connections, the online job board resource, Waubonsee Career Network, and career fairs, students are exposed to a variety of for-credit internships throughout the community.

Having at least one internship during an undergraduate experience can help give that momentous walk across the stage on Graduation Day an added bonus: Those graduates who’ve completed internships are likely collecting not just a diploma, but they just might have a job offer waiting in the wings.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR You are out

To the Editor: After the health care bill failure, a newspaper interviewed Trump supporters to gauge their sentiment. One woman said she was disappointed to find out the program she has come to depend on, Obamacare, was being eliminated and replaced with something less. She said she was still a supporter and was giving Trump 10 strikes before bailing. That’s a pretty liberal at-bat, so let’s see if Trump might lose her support.

Strike one is health care. Strike two appears to be the wall and Mexico paying for it. The budget says we are paying for it. Another campaign promise was getting rid of illegals who were criminals.

It appears we can’t deport them if they committed a crime and their country refuses to take them, strike three. Strike four is the fact that the swamp is filled up with Goldman Sach employees. Strike five might be the Russian mess.

Several countries appear to be rattling their swords and daring the U.S. to react.

Syria, North Korea and Russia are making noise. Strikes six through eight? Let’s leave it as strike six. Labeling China as a currency manipulator was another campaign promise. Strike seven as Trump gives China a pass so they can continue to dump cheap products onto

the marketplace. Putting companies who go off shore on notice that they will be dealt with harshly. A few headlines of companies committing to stay, but in reality reports show the exodus continues. Strike eight. Trump said he would release his taxes but then said nah. Strike nine. The bill for protecting Trump and his family exceeds what Obama cost for eight years and we haven’t even made it to 100 days. Strike 10, you are out.

Stop looking the other way

To the Editor: Earlier this week, the news broke about four intelligence agencies warning us of contacts between Trump team members and Russian operatives having meetings in Europe. The four countries were Britain, Estonia, Poland and Australia.

The information collected was handed over to U.S. intelligence in August and September. It was deemed important enough that the CIA head informed the eight leading members of the House and Senate. But nothing was done. Why? I grew up through the Cold War, the Korean War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Vietnam War, the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the continuing wars on terror.

I am sure many of you have done likewise, or at least some of the above. To talk to foreign governments and in some cases being on their payrolls (especially Russia) would have been considered treasonous. Even to know about what was happening in August and the autumn of 2016 and doing nothing about it would be labeled as treasonous.

It is time to demand from our leaders in D.C. what happened, who knew, and what the heck is going to be done about it. The time of looking the other way is long over.

Afraid to be questioned?

To the Editor: The United States has existed for over 200 years. In the 1700s our forefathers declared their independence and then created a new government based on an agreed-upon Constitution.

The authors of this new Constitution wanted a government which would prevent authoritarian leadership. To achieve their desire, the new Constitution would provide for a legislative branch (Congress) consisting of two parts (Senate and House of Representatives) which would make the laws and also act to

check each other.

A president was given executive power to enforce the laws. However, if the president does not approve of a bill passed

by Congress, that president could veto the bill. However, Congress may override the veto. Once again, there are checks against excessive power.

A new country, the United States of America, now had a national government to create and enforce its laws. But those early leaders of our country created a third part of the new Constitution, a supreme court. This was possibly the most far-reaching idea for the new government. A supreme court possesses jurisdiction to protect the people against a national government which just might become too powerful.

In 2017 some people indicated strong support for the Constitution but then say that the press is dishonest, not truthful.

Where do they get such ideas? Where is their proof? Do those people and their leader want to eliminate freedom of speech and the press? Such thoughts are very scary. Do such people want a tweeter as their president, a president who seems afraid that he may be questioned during a press conference?

County grants $30,000 more toward Kennedy Road path

The Yorkville City Council voted in 2012 to accept a $1.3 million Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program grant to pay for the trail’s construction, but with the understanding that private donors would raise the city’s share of the trail’s funding. The Push for the Path nonprofit organization was formed around that time to help raise money for that local match of $357,000.

Since then, organizer Lynn Dubajic, who is also the city of Yorkville’s economic development consultant, and members of the McCue family have held golf outings, 5K races and other

events to raise the funds. Dubajic has said the county’s contribution and an upcoming 5K fundraiser could help make the goal.

Dubajic attended the meeting Tuesday morning along with Yorkville City Administrator Bart Olson and Billy McCue, Darlene McCue’s brother-inlaw.

“I just wanted to thank everyone for your consideration,” Dubajic said.

“This is the missing link.”

The Kendall County Board agreed Tuesday to increase the amount of funds given for the Kennedy Road trail in Yorkville.

The county voted last May to provide the city of Yorkville with $50,000 in county Transportation Alternatives Program, or KC-TAP, funds to go towards the construction of the 2.72-milelong trail, planned to go from Route 47 to just east of Mill Road. The board agreed Tuesday to increase the amount of funds to $80,000.

Board Chairman Scott Gryder and board members John Purcell, Lynn Cullick, Bob “H.D.” Davidson, Matthew Prochaska and Elizabeth Flowers voted in favor of the measure Tuesday, while board member Matthew Kellogg voted present and board member Judy Gilmour abstained. Board members Audra Hendrix and Tony Giles were not present for Tuesday’s meeting.

Gilmour, who voted against giving the TAP funds to the city last year, said she was concerned that the county was not following the guidelines of the TAP fund, which is supposed to be for projects along county or state highways.

She said it’s “going to be hard to say no to another group that comes in.”

County Engineer Fran Klaas said that while Gilmour’s concern is legitimate, the county’s transportation sales tax, which funds the TAP program, is “supportive of all modes of transportation,” including biking and other means.

He said it’s the only time in the history of the program that they have gone over a self-imposed $50,000 limit.

“This is a unique project, unique location, but super important, kind of a missing-link piece, so the Highway [Committee] was very supportive of the project even though it did go over our normal limit,” Klaas said.

Purcell said the project would give the county a “real link” between Oswego, Bristol and Kendall townships, and “between those three townships, that’s probably 80 percent of the population of the whole county.”

Gryder said the intent of the KCTAP fund was to support regional projects.

“There’s nothing really more regional than this,” he said. “What a huge connection this is ultimately going to be.”

Newark mulls amending liquor law for video gaming

By MARILYNN THOMPSON news@kendallcountynow.com The Newark Village Board is considering changes to their liquor license ordinance to allow the Newark BP to offer video gaming.

Currently the Newark BP has a Class B License to sell packaged liquor only.

Under state law, businesses that wish to offer video gaming to their patrons must hold liquor licenses that allow them to pour the beverages on site, such as at restaurants or taverns.

The law also limits the number of video gaming machines a business can have to a maximum of five and the machines must be in a restricted area of the business.

Entry to the restricted area is strict-

ly controlled and monitored by multiple cameras.

There are fines for non-compliance, under the state law.

A total of five percent of the revenues would go directly to the town.

There was only one public comment on this discussion. A person who was prepared to be against the proposal said he feels it is tightly controlled and may be good to have in town.

Meyer said the organization has been fundraising by various means, but that the state has not held up its bargain.

“We’ve hired an advancement director to try and solicit more funding outside of government,” she said. “We held a very successful fundraiser recently. We are trying everything we possibly can. We’re applying for more grants, we’re doing everything in our power, but it doesn’t absolve the state from doing what they are required to do for its citizens. And there are citizens in this state, more than anybody even realizes, that are going through domestic violence and sexual assault issues that need help. The problem is, that help’s not going to be there the longer we go with this uncertainty.”

Meyer said Mutual Ground is “trying to do more with less.”

“We’re doing our part, the state needs to do their part,” she said.

Andi Danis, the president of Mutual Ground’s board, said the fundraisers can “only bring in so much.”

“All of the agencies here are competing for donations and sponsors, and corpora-

tions can only do so much, and individuals can only do so much,” Danis said. “We need the support that was promised to us through contracted services. We provided those services, now we need payment for those services, as any businessman would expect.”

Vickie Smith, CEO and executive director of the Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence, encouraged residents to contact their elected officials about the budget issue and its effect on human services.

“We’re asking the community to talk to their elected officials,” Smith said. “The elected officials have to understand what this is going to cost their communities in their districts by the time this is over. It will be over someday. We all hope that we’re still standing to see that. We are gonna work as hard as we can to make sure that happens.”

Gretchen Vapnar, executive director of the Community Crisis Center in Elgin, said the donors who have been generous in their communities have already paid their taxes, which should be paying for those services.

“The people in our community who support us so well, understand us totally, they already paid their taxes,” she said. “They paid the state with the idea that some of that money would go to support their

interest – domestic violence, sexual assault services, homeless services. They considered that that would happen. ‘Sure, I’ll pay in, I’ll pay on time, I’ll pay the amount you requested, because I support these line items.’ Now I’ll admit that isn’t always a conscious decision, but we do believe that the state is doing some of the things we want them to do with the money we pay. That didn’t happen.”

Holmes, who began her first term in office in January 2007, pointed out that she served in the legislature under Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

“I was elected during the Rod Blagojevich administration,” she said. “The most difficult time I have spent in Springfield has been the past two years. Who would have thought that the Rod Blagojevich days were the good ol’ days?”

Holmes said she understands that its difficult for organizations to manage their budgets when they don’t know what money is coming from the state and when.

“If I tell you, ‘I don’t know if or when you’re getting your next payment,’ what in the hell are you supposed to do?” she said. “It’s really difficult to manage your business and do the services you do.”

A group of domestic violence shelter representatives and other human services advocates gathered at Mutual Ground’s headquarters in Aurora on April 12 to again make a plea for a resolution on the state’s budget crisis and to call attention to two bills designed to fully fund such organizations.

The Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence organized the event, which featured speakers from Mutual Ground and the Community Crisis Center in Elgin, as well as state Sen. Linda Holmes, D-Aurora, who was the only state legislator invited who attended the event. A dozen elected officials were contacted and invited to the event, according to Mutual Ground officials.

Michelle Meyer, Mutual Ground’s executive director, said the organization will be $510,000 short on state funds by the end of the fiscal year in June.

Meyer said Mutual Ground entered into a contract with the state last July for $489,000 in funding. The state last sent a payment on that contract in August, she said. To date, the state has sent the organization only $116,000, and that was federal pass-through funds, she said.

The organization also entered into an agreement with the Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence, which entered into an agreement with the state, for $194,000 in funds but has only received $56,500 of those funds, Meyer said.

Mutual Ground is one of several rape crisis centers suing Gov. Bruce Rauner for breach of contract, Meyer said.

The state’s budget crisis has been directly impacting Mutual Ground’s services, Meyer said. She said so far this month, the center has had to turn away seven adults and 11 children requesting shelter due to a lack of bed space. Since the beginning of the year, the facility has had to turn away 45 adults and 12 children, she said. The facility’s wait list has been full since December, she said.

“This two-year glitch in the budget is going to have ramifications 20 years from now,” she said. “If you’re in college right now studying to be a teacher, where are you going to come out and teach? If you are the best and the brightest, where are you going to go teach? You’re not going to come to a university in Illinois that doesn’t even know if their doors are going to be open in a couple months. So you’re going to go to another state.

We’ve impacted our universities for probably two generations.”

There are two bills currently in the General Assembly that would provide approximately $18.6 million in funding promised to domestic violence service providers for the current fiscal year, according to the coalition.

The bills are House Bill 3259, which is currently in the House Appropriations Committee, and Senate Bill 1695, co-sponsored by Holmes, which is in the full Senate. The House bill’s sponsors include state Rep. Linda Chapa LaVia, D-Aurora, and state Rep. Steven Andersson, R-Geneva.

The Senate bill’s sponsors including Holmes, state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, and state Sen. Karen McConnaughay, R-West Dundee.

Carrie Boyd, the director of policy for the Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence, said the House bill needs 60 votes for passage, and it is short 20 votes. She said, however, that a meeting was happening April 12 with state Rep. Greg Harris, D-Chicago, the chairman of the appropriations human services committee, and some of the domestic violence organizations regarding the House bill.

“We are hopeful that we can push for this bill to at least have a fighting chance and get called out of committee,” she said.

Parkview student places 7th at state spelling bee KENDALL COUNTY RECORD Elijah Oudyn, a seventh-grader at Parkview Christian Academy in Yorkville, placed seventh overall at the State Level National Geographic Bee on Friday, March 31. The bee took place at Illinois State University in Bloomington. Students who won their school level bee took an online qualifying test, and the top 100 scores in the state progressed to the state level bee. Elijah progressed through two preliminary rounds, including a tiebreaker round to narrow the field to the top 10 for the final round of competition. The top finisher in each state progresses to the National Level competition in Washington D.C. Oswego officials ask for clarification on allowing actual weapons inside

his clientele is expected to hold concealed-carry licenses. As a result, BJ’s Shooting would allow customers to bring weapons inside the business, but would require the weapons be put in lock-boxes before entering a simulation room.

Despite the precaution, many board members expressed concern about allowing weapons inside the business at all.

“It’s a deal-breaker for me,” Trustee Pam Parr said. “I don’t want live weapons and kids’ birthday parties in the same building. That doesn’t make sense to me. If your clientele can’t turn around and put a gun in their car, I don’t want that business here.”

Trustee Ryan Kaufman agreed, noting that he can’t wrap his head around the idea of wanting to have guns on site. Trustee Luis Perez asked Bonifas and Brown to reconsider.

“I’d love to negotiate with you folks,” Perez said. “I want to be the first in line to shoot zombies, but I want to make sure this is good for Oswego. I ask you to reconsider that portion of your model before we kick this off.”

“If this was some community where it was culturally different, the conversation would be different tonight. But, we’re negotiating on behalf of the vil-

lage and the culture of this village,” Perez continued. “... It probably works great in Texas and southern Illinois and Indiana, but here we are.”

Village President Gail Johnson questioned the content of the simulations and wanted to ensure they would not feature violent situations against law enforcement or women. She was assured that the content of the simulations did not include either.

Trustee Joe West voiced his concerns about training children, teens and those without concealed-carry permits to shoot weapons.

“I’m against this basic theme unless it’s only for law enforcement and those who have been through background checks,” he said. “I’m afraid the training would be too good.”

Board members requested that Brown and Bonifas reconsider their decision to allow live weapons on site, and invited them to sit down with the Police Chief Jeff Burgner to update their procedures.

The pair is expected to come back in front of the board May 2.

“I think you’re on the cusp of something wonderful and unique. When you said ‘zombie hunt’ you had me at hello,” Perez said. “But, this is Oswego, not Waco or Indiana.”

Oswego Village Board members sent two business hopefuls back to the drawing board April 11 following a discussion about guns, children, violence, zombies, birthday parties and public safety.

Prospective businesses owners Bhairvi Brown and Joseph Bonifas appeared in front of the board during a Tuesday night meeting seeking approval of a special use permit to open up a new business called BJ’s Shooting at 1565 and 1567 Route 34.

If approved, the business would feature indoor marksmanship simulation training geared toward entertainment and education. The virtual simulation training is similar to a “life-sized video game” and is similar to what law enforcement and military members use for training. Brown said no live ammunition or live weapons will be used on-site.

“It’s 100 percent safe. It’s similar to going into a golf simulator,” Brown explained. Participants can tackle real-life scenarios, head to the “OK Corral” or go on a zombie hunt via the different simulations.

Parents can host children’s birthday parties, offices can hold team-building exercises, and those looking for extra weapons training can utilize the same space to hone their skills.

“First and foremost what we’re looking to do is train and promote safety,” Brown said. “We want to teach people how to use a weapon and what scenarios they might encounter. Someone might have their concealed carry and be able to carry a gun around with them, but what happens if they’re exposed to certain situations. How would they react? By going through these scenarios it will help them learn.”

Board members praised the business’ innovation. Brown said the closest business offering simulations of this nature is 75 miles north, and it’s the only one of its kind in Illinois. Other simulation businesses have sprouted up in Arizona and Texas.

“It’s really new,” Brown said. “It’s a new way of moving the industry along and it’s a new concept for everyone.”

Newark hasn’t had such problems this year.

After a pair of lopsided wins over Hinckley-Big Rock, the Timberwolves suffered their second consecutive loss by falling 10-3 to Newark on Monday afternoon in Shabbona.

“Our intensity, or our want to be here, it seemed like we didn’t want to be here and that hurt us on offense and defense,” Indian Creek coach Kevin Poterek said. “Last week was good, we played clean baseball and the last couple games have been not clean baseball and it’s not a mystery why last week’s record looked better than this week’s.

“The play is so consistent, we’re playing consistent baseball and that is all I want,” Newark coach JR Veliz said. “We’re hitting the ball. Our pitching’s been great so far.”

Newark went on to win 9-8 in nine innings on Tuesday, Jacob Slivka delivering a tworun walkoff hit. Cameron Myre notched the win with 2.1 innings of relief.

Indian Creek (4-7, 4-4) avoided the mercy rule with a two-run single by Cooper Larsen to right field that scored Trevor Guerra and Olin Simpson in the bottom of the sixth and added another run in the seventh when Guerra

Newark left-handed starting pitcher Connor Swanson only allowed one hit through the first five innings and earned the win by allowing two runs on two hits with six strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings pitched.

“Connor Swanson, man, that’s the thing I told him at the beginning of the year – last year he threw some innings for us last year but it was the confidence that was lacking,” Veliz said. “He threw hard but he was all over the place. This year, I wanted him to just hit the glove.

Now he’s hitting his spots and doing his thing.”

Peyton Willie scored three goals, and Yorkville topped Plano 8-0 in nonconference action on Monday.

Willie, an Illinois recruit, scored the Foxes’ first two goals assisted by Catelyn Peterson. Katie Straznickas and Peterson later found the back of the net on unassisted goals, and Willie scored her third goal of the half off an assist by Straznickas.

In the second half, Alexis Crain scored an unassisted to make the score 6-0. Senior Jessica Luptak scored her first game of the season off an assist by Emily Brown.

Ben Garbelman went the distance, striking out three over five innings.

Jeffrey Freiberg’s two-out, bases-clearing double highlighted Yorkville’s seven-run fifth inning in the Foxes’ 7-5 come-from-behind win over Sycamore on April 12.

The Yorkville Middle School track team (above) banded together in the wake of the aftermath of the Feb. 28 tornado that struck the village of Ottawa and damaged the LaSalle Township Nursing Home, injuring many residents and causing extensive damage to the building. Over the past weeks, YMS track members have been collecting donations for the mile they ran April 4 in support of those affected. All donations were collected and the YMS track team was able to collect more than $2,800 to donate to the LaSalle County Nursing Home. Donations can be sent to the LaSalle County Board in Ottawa, Ill.

The Northern IL Reds 13U baseball team finished first in the JP Sports Experience the Turf baseball tournament in Wheeling. In pool play, the Reds beat the Palatine Predators, 16-4, and GoPro 13U, 12-2. Going into the semi-final game on Sunday as the No. 1 seed, they beat the CDBL Rockets, 13-3, and advanced to the championship game to defeat the Hinsdale Red Dogs Black by a score of 4-2. Returning after 2 years away, Plano senior a revelation to Reapers

It’s part of the evolution from athlete to baseball player.

Campbell’s on-base percentage hovered under .300 last year, but he was determined to hit leadoff. He spent time during the offseason doing tee work and soft toss, honing his muscle memory movement.

He did CrossFit. He’s worked to cut down on a tendency to lunge at the ball.

“He was ‘see the ball, hit the ball’ before. He had that RBI mentality that he would go two inches off the plate,” Parpet said. “Now he’s more

selective at the plate. He’s understanding situational baseball, how to bunt for hits. With his speed, if he hits any ball in the hole behind shortstop, it’s a single.”

Campbell started the season hitting third, but quickly moved up to leadoff.

That spot seems to suit him best.

“Very true, I love hitting leadoff,” Campbell said. “I like it because your first pitch as a leadoff hitter is almost always going to be a fastball. I’m very aggressive at the plate. I love to jump on that first pitch.”

Campbell’s best baseball still could be ahead of him.

Parpet thinks he has Division I raw talent, and has had discussions with a few schools.

Going the junior college route first could be a possibility for Campbell, who wants to study accounting or construction management in college.

One thing is for certain: He’s glad to be back in the game.

“I look back now and think that maybe I should have played baseball my first two years of high school, but it is what it is,” Campbell said.

“I’m living in the present now, just going out and having fun.

It’s all working out for the best.”

Levi Campbell lost the love, he’ll admit it.

The youngest of four siblings, two brothers who played baseball and a sister in softball, Campbell started T-ball when he was very young. The Plano senior began travel ball when he was in sixth grade.

Somewhere between there and high school, Campbell decided he was done. He didn’t play baseball his first two years at Plano.

“Just a lot of games,” Campbell said. “I kind of got sick of it.”

He caught the baseball bug again, though. Constantly cajoled by Plano baseball coach John Parpet, Campbell returned to baseball his junior year.

His return has been a revelation to the Reapers.

Now hitting leadoff, Campbell is batting .482 with a .540 on-base percentage. His threerun home run helped fuel a win over Seneca on Monday.

“He can do so many things on the baseball field,” Parpet said, “and he’s still learning.”

For his outstanding play, Levi Campbell is the Record Athlete of the Week.

Campbell, relatively compact at 5-foot-10 and around 165 pounds, nonetheless generates incredible top spin on the ball.

God-given strong wrists and hands helps.

The results can be breathtaking.

During a game last summer, Campbell launched a majestic homer over the trees in left-center at Plano’s field.

Sitting on four straight strikeouts, Campbell ended his minislump in loud fashion Monday – putting a pitch onto the train tracks beyond Seneca’s field.

“When he hits the ball, it just flies,” Parpet said.

Campbell, who has scored 21 runs, has 10 RBIs and six extra-base hits in 63 plate appearances, credits his coaches for keeping him on point.

“They don’t let you fail at this sport, always try to keep you up,” Campbell said. “If you do something wrong they are right on you to help you.”

Parpet considered the Seneca game an affirmation of Campbell’s maturation on the field. He struck out his first three at-bats, but kept his concentration in the field.

“Runners on second and third, fly ball to left-center, he had to take nine to 10 steps and catch the ball,” Parpet said. “A lot of players throw to the cutoff man. He knew to throw the ball to third base and he kept the guy from advancing to third. It’s those plays between the lines that don’t show up in stats that are important.

“He was 0-for-3, but he didn’t take it into the field with him. When we needed him the most at the plate, he made the adjustment. He wouldn’t

RECORD NIGHT AT INVITE Yorkville girls win team title, boys second; both break 400 relay records

And, for Yorkville’s girls track team, a record result.

The Foxes’ 400-meter relay broke a school record at Thursday’s Matt Wulf Invitational in Yorkville, paving the way to a team championship.

Yorkville scored 196 points, easily outdistancing runner-up Dixon (85).

The Yorkville boys also broke a program record in the 400 relay, and took second place to Oswego East in the team standings. Oswego East had 134 points and Yorkville 130 in the eight-team meet.

Raiygan Clark, an alternate in the girls 400 relay, was a late substitute for Ashanti Matthews. Clark took the baton and teamed with Alainna Batres, Mischara Palmer and Gianna Davis for a 50.28, besting the previous program record of 50.67 set at conference last year.

“It was really great on Raiygan’s part to step in on short distance and still able to run as well as we did,” Yorkville coach Lauren Vriezen said. “That was a good way to start off the meet. Those four girls had run together, so it wasn’t completely brand new, but there is still anxiety about making the change.”

In field events, Yorkville’s returning state medalist Sydney Anderson cleared 5 feet, 6 inches for the first time this spring.

“That was a good confidence-booster for her,” Vriezen said. “She’s been clearing 5-5 but she hasn’t quite been able to get over 5-6. This should help her.”

Elsewhere Alyssa Edwards came back from third place in the last 600 meters to take the 1,600 in a personal-best 5:17.51.

“What’s more impressive from a coaching standpoint is she had been sick this week. We told her that she didn’t have to run it, but she did,” Vriezen said.

“She really rallied and came up big for us.”

Also on the track, versatile freshman Rachel Hunter won the 300 hurdles in 45.41 seconds – her first time running the event this spring.

“She’s been a jack-of-all-trades. She’s run the 4x800, 4x200, long jump, the 400,” Vriezen said. She hurdled in middle school and expressed an interest in doing the hurdles. Knowing her speed in the 400 she seemed an ideal candidate in the 300s. She’s proved herself thus far.”

On the girls side, Olivia Borowiak won the 3,200 (11:30.51) and the pole vault (8 feet), Batres the 100 hurdles. The Foxes also won the 800 and 1,600 relays.

On the boys side the team of Shaq Hamilton, Peyton Frankenreider, Jackson Torok and Logan Sudduth ran a 42.93 400-meter relay. It broke the previous school record of 43.74 set in sectionals last year.

“Javell Moore has been running that as well,” Vriezen said. “They had a lot of success indoors with the 4x200. We were excited to see what we could put together outdoors in the 4x100 and 4x200.”

“You have people counting on you,” Vriezen said.

“There’s that much more excitement and that much more drama. It’s great to see their hard work pay off.”

In the high jump Yorkville sophomore Javen Williams cleared 6 feet for the first time to earn second place.

“That’s a huge PR for him,” Vriezen said.

In addition to running in the 400 relay, Frankenreider set personal bests in winning the 300 hurdles (40.37) and getting second in the 110 hurdles (15.37),

and won the triple jump (40 feet, 8.50 inches) Torok won the 200 in a PR of 22.0 seconds, and Miles Mann won the long jump by going 19-11.

“We’re really pleased with how the girls and guys put together those performances,” Vriezen said. “It’s always great to do well in your home invite. It’s exciting to see all the pieces come together.”

Yorkville track notes: Freshman Rachel Hunter broke the school’s outdoor 300 hurdles record on Monday, running a 45.37 in a dual win against Kaneland.

The Foxes also won the boys portion of the meet.
