Kendall County Judge Timothy J. He continued, “Undoubtedly at some point in time, Kendall County will be positioned to have more judges and a larger facility for us, but in the meantime, it’s not even in our long-term plans. We have the [second-floor] space, we use it for other things – they’re actually training in the space today – but as far as actually developing it into courtroom space, my guess, and it’s purely a guess, we’re at least five years away from people looking at that.”

“I appreciate that,” Purcell responded.

McCann said he guessed it would cost $4 million to $5 million to add two courtrooms upstairs, or $1 million to $1.25 million for a courtroom to be added

to the courthouse’s west side that “might buy you five years.”

“When we get to that point, you’re gonna want to get updated numbers and decide whether actually building expansion is more appropriate than going upstairs, but I can’t predict that,” he said.

McCann also commented on the planned updated video visitation and video bond call systems, which are estimated to cost $265,000.

“The systems we are looking at will do more than just provide for visitation and bond call,” he said.

“It will provide for remote access, for not only the lawyers, public defenders, probation staff, state’s attorney. We will expand our use of video for court, so we will transport less people to court on a daily basis.

This system will, in all likelihood, probably have the ability for residents of the jail to visit with families remotely, similar to a Skype type of situation, which means less people coming into the sheriff’s office.”

The Kendall County Board approved a $3 million upgrade to security systems at the Kendall County Courthouse and the Public Safety Center, both in Yorkville, in a unanimous vote Tuesday.

The board agreed to award a contract to Security Automation Systems of Indianapolis for $3,006,655, one of four companies that bid on the project.

According to Sheriff Dwight Baird, the total bid includes a base bid, a 10 percent contingency, and two alternate additions: a four-inch conduit connection between the Public Safety Center and the courthouse, and an additional fiber optic cable to go into the four-inch conduit to provide a redundant path between the two facilities, according to Baird.

Baird said the original estimated cost of the project was $3.85 million.

Upgrades to the county’s video visitation and video bond call programs will be bid on at a future date, he said.

During a presentation to the County Board this summer, representatives from Dewberry, the project management firm for the upgrade, said they will update the analog camera system, intercommunications system, access control system and PLC-based security control system. Crews will also update cabling in the courthouse and Public Safety Center.

They will also add a redundant fiber communication connection between the two buildings.

During the committee meeting, board member John Purcell, chairman of the board’s finance committee, said he was concerned about having money in the capital fund for a future courthouse expansion or build-out of the second floor at the courthouse.

“The issue for me is, when are we going to need to put $5 million, $6 million, $7 million into a courthouse expansion – that’s my real concern,” he said.

Judge Timothy McCann told the committee he doesn’t foresee the immediate need for such a project. He said six to 10 years ago, it was a different story.

“We thought by now we would be upstairs in the second floor, we’d probably have two more courtrooms functioning and so on,” McCann said. “The

An opportunity to enhance courthouse Chances are most of the people who have cause to visit the Kendall County Courthouse in Yorkville really don’t want to be there. Courthouses can be grim places as people consult with their attorneys and await their cases to be called.

But as our news editor, Tony Scott, reported last week, the atmosphere inside the courthouse should be a little less imposing beginning next month when members of the Kendall Arts Guild and the county judiciary unveil a newly painted mural above the building’s security checkpoint in the main lobby.

Using donations along with the active support of Presiding Judge Timothy McCann, the KAG commissioned a professional artist, Eulojio “Joe” Ortega of Sandwich, to paint a mural featuring Kendall County themes. Without going into the specifics of the mural’s content, Ortega hinted that it will likely highlight some of the county’s natural beauty: the Fox River, our abundant farm fields and open spaces.

“When you see this mural it should feel like Kendall County. That’s the thing that’s most important,” Ortega said.

An unveiling for the mural is set for Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 4:30 p.m.

Examples of public art are rare in Kendall County and we’re pleased that the KAG and McCann saw an opportunity to enhance the courthouse with the mural. It is our hope the mural, like other successful public art, will provide a moment of contemplation and reflection to all those who walk into the courthouse.

Even better, may it give a sense to all who view it that they are in unique place with a rich history: Kendall County.

I suspect most people, hearing the word “archaeology,” tend to think of Indiana Jones searching for the Ark of the Covenant with much swash and buckle or Howard Carter seeing “wonderful things” as his flashlight pierced the gloom into King Tut’s tomb for the first time in a couple thousand years.

But archaeology, which happens right here in Illinois on a regular basis, is also vital to improving our understanding of the state’s past. Archaeologists have investigated the ancient people who hunted Ice Age mammals and lived in the Modoc Rock Shelter down in Randolph County, uncovered the extent of the huge city built by Native People surrounding soaring Monk’s Mound at Cahokia, and used scientific techniques to analyze and then interpret the lives of the state’s earliest European settlers at Starved Rock, Mort Massac, and New Salem.

Archaeology has even helped tell the story of Kendall County’s long history, with digs centered around both historic and prehistoric sites. Excavations at one of those sites, the Jensen Site in Oswego back in the summer and fall of 1987, documented the occupation of the area along Waubonsie Creek by Native People for more than 1,000 years. Some of the results of that dig are now on exhibit at Oswego’s Little White School Museum.

Archaeology can often answer the questions of what and how, but it’s

This cultural tradition appeared around 8,000 B.C., and lasted for about 7,000 years.

Indians of the Eastern Archaic culture were different from their paleo predecessors in that they were hunter-gatherers who placed more emphasis on gathering as opposed to being primarily big game hunters. While hunting was still important to their survival, Archaic people also began to depend on gathering other foodstuffs, such as nuts, berries and wild grains.

large fragment of a bison’s leg bone in one of the cooking pits. It was sent off to Dr. Michael Finnegan at Kansas State University, who dated it to between 1100 and 1400 A.D. Those Late Woodland people who lived along Waubonsie Creek on the Jensen Site picked a near-ideal location. The site is close to the creek and the river, and all the food there. Fresh water mussel shells, presumably from either the river or creek, have been found in a couple of the cooking pits.

In addition, the creek and river bottomlands were rich in natural foods, as they are even today. Dense stands of

oaks, walnuts, butternuts and hickories dotted the river and creek valleys, while berries of various kinds were also abundant. Wild carrot, wild onion, and other food plants were also thick throughout the area, as were the grasses from sunflowers, marsh elder and goosefoot to little barley those ancient people began selectively breeding to increase their yield and usefulness.

The spot these early Oswegoans picked for their homes, best described as upland savanna, with grassland punctuated by hardwoods, was also easily defensible and had a pure water source in a spring that dropped down

the bluff to the creek. The Jensen Site probably was as popular a place to live a thousand years ago as it appears (judging by the nice homes in Stone Gate Estates) to be today.

Talk to any real estate agent, and they’ll tell you the value of a piece of property depends on three things: location, location, location. It never ceases to amaze me that the more things change, the more they really do stay essentially the same.

openly lied, which is well-documented, yet there are some who deny even the proof of it. Honesty and integrity are no longer valued. Because of seeing this, though, we can decide that we must stand for something more concrete. We truly do not have the right to be “design-your-own-character” people.

So I remain thankful for the junk attitudes I see around me. It causes me to examine what I truly do believe. Why? Because it matters. Will you seek the truth then speak it? Or will you just hole yourself away somewhere waiting for it to be over?

Campground safety issues

To the Editor: Hi, just back from the Sandwich Fair. It was great as usual. However, as a fourday RV camper at the fair I have a serious issue with safety in the campground area.

It was around 3 p.m. this Sunday afternoon, and I guess the first demolition derby had finished and as a result lots of

people were trying to get out of the parking lot. Getting out is not an easy task because the huge north lot funnels down to one lane out of the fairgrounds. This exit is right next to the campground. As a result, some folks thought it was a good idea to cut through the campground, not the roads in the campground, but right through the grass between the RVs and RV spaces.

Not only can this cause damage to RV hoses and electrical cords, but there are children present, including my 1-anda-half-year-old granddaughter. These people were not just cutting through, they were tearing through at high rates of speed. This should not be allowed and is not allowed.

The fair must block off the access to the grass area of the campground in the future and do a better job of traffic control, or some child will be injured or killed. This would not be a good way to end a fair. .

I wonder, however, about the sources of his information. They seem to have come from the Trump campaign for the presidency. When I read his letter online at KendallCountyNow.com, it was interrupted, amusingly, by a short video from CNN titled “CharityWatch Gives Clinton Foundation an ‘A’ Rating.”

PolitiFact.com is a non-partisan group of editors and reporters affiliated with the Tampa Bay Times who do research to determine the truthfulness of statements by politicians. Basically, they fact-check.

(I do believe that journalists, as a class, are truth seekers. That Mr. Trump does not care for the press is telling.) They have recently created a most interesting and colorful chart indicating how often the Republican and Democratic contenders for the presidency tell the truth or lie.

Who, according to Politifact, is rated the most truthful of all the presidential candidates? Hillary Clinton. Her opponent is rated one of the least truthful and almost in last place.

Mr. Henderson, among his dubious

statements concerning the Clinton Foundation, claims that “Experts believe only 10 percent goes for worthy causes.”

Who are these experts and what is their area of expertise? From what I could find out in a short matter of time was that the statement may have come from Rush Limbaugh or Fox News. However, this “gospel according to Rush” has been thoroughly fact-checked and found to be false. According to FactCheck.org, these “ ‘facts’ according to Rush” appear to have originated from a CARLY for America super PAC. Since the Clinton Foundation does most of its charitable work in-house with its own staff, instead of giving money to other organizations like many foundations, it was for a time hard to rate. But according to these fact-finding organizations it is actually using about 88 percent to do charitable work, not 10 percent. As of Sept.1, 2016, CharityNavigator gives the Clinton Foundation four out of four stars and a rating of 94.74.

Readers of Mr. Henderson’s opinions should be wary and do some fact-checking of their own on some of his other claims. The truth matters.

New cable television provider inks pact with Kendall County

tscott@kendallcountynow.com Residents of the Boulder Hill subdivision and other unincorporated areas in Kendall County will soon be getting another cable provider.

The Kendall County Board voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a franchise agreement with cable television and phone service provider MetroNet. County Administra- John tor Jeff Wilkins said the Campbell county and MetroNet have had discussions over the past year about a cable franchise agreement with the provider.

The franchise agreement would only apply to service provided to those customers in unincorporated areas of Kendall County, such as Boulder Hill and Shore Heights. However, Wilkins said MetroNet has recently inked pacts with the villages of Oswego and Plainfield, and is in discussions with Montgomery.

John Campbell, vice president and

general counsel of MetroNet, said his firm has “taken a pretty big interest in Kendall County.”

Board member Robert “HD” Davidson asked Wilkins if more public notice was required.

Wilkins said that Comcast was notified of the meeting, as were the Oswego Township supervisor and highway commissioner, and the issue was discussed at the County Board’s Committee of the Whole meeting last Thursday.

Wilkins said Illinois statute does not require special notice, just a traditional public hearing.

Campbell said his company has signed agreements throughout Illinois and he has yet to have heard anyone from the public express concerns.

Campbell said the company will have a construction communications website to inform residents about the progress of the project.

“Folks will be able to go on there, and get information about their particular areas,” he said.

“Additionally, they’ll have an opportunity to look at our services and our pricing.”

Simulation: The future of health care education Since the beginning of the early 1900s, educating health care professionals in institutions of higher education rather than hospital-based diploma and certification programs remained a long-term goal for many professions.

As the number of “higher education-based” programs increased, so did the interest in integrative health care curriculum and the use of complementary and alternative practices.

Examples of such practices included patient-centered care that focused on healing the whole person and integrating Western scientific medicine with a broad understanding of the nature of illness, healing and wellness.

From the Kardex, a folded cardstock roadmap to all things for the patient, and the electrocardiograph to high-tech simulation based assessment, the all-encompassing vision for education of health care professionals should be to deliver patient-centered care as members of an interdisciplinary team and emphasize evidence-based practice.

The vision also recommended that a set of shared competencies across all health care professions, focused on patient-centered care, be required by regulatory bodies (state agencies and national accreditation review committees) governing education in various disciplines.

The term simulation, or simulator, as used in health care usually refers to a situation, or device, that represents a simulated patient (or part of a patient) and interacts appropriately with the actions taken by the simulation participant (student or instructor).

It has been said that the interest in simulation for health care has derived from the heavy use of simulation for training and other purposes in non-medical industries such as nuclear power production, commercial aviation and the military. If you think about it, health care simulators are comparable to the flight simulators that have become well known to you and me.

Simulation is used to improve the education and training of students by emphasizing conceptual knowledge and basic skills as well as introduction to real-world responsibilities and work to be performed. The use of simulation can be applied across nearly all health care domains including

As Dean for Health Professions and Public Service at Waubonsee Community College, I envision the major role of simulation to be an educator, trainer and “rehearsal provider” for those students actually preparing for working in the delivery of health care.

Simulation is relevant during the didactic portion of curriculum as well as during any practicum, clinical or externship experiences. I also see simulation emerging as an important tool for ongoing training of experienced, health care personnel.

Waubonsee Community College’s Aurora Fox Valley Campus (formerly known as the Copley Campus) houses high tech simulators and simulation applications for registered nursing and allied health students. From fully interactive adult mannequins and trainers to the pediatric and neonate mannequins, students can learn in a controlled and “clinical replica” environment under the supervision of college faculty.

In addition, video conferencing and advanced networking allow college faculty to provide real time guidance and feedback to students while the simulation is going on. For the most complex use of simulation, the typical form of feedback is a detailed post-simulation debriefing session, often using audio-video recordings of the scenario. Waiting until the scenario is finished allows the Waubonsee Community College nursing and allied health faculty to apply their collective skills without interruption but then allows them to critique the actions, decisions and behaviors of students.

Simulation in health care education is approaching its 20 to 25 years of steady progress, and the current cohort of leaders in medical simulation and health care will be the significant participants in determining which direction the future history will take.

A Kendall County judge has sentenced a Yorkville man to prison for stealing a car and possessing cocaine.

Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis announced Friday that Kendall County Judge Timothy McCann sentenced Nicholas Allgood, 37, of the 9000 block of Route 34 in Yorkville, to eight and a half years in state prison for possession of Nicholas a stolen motor vehicle Allgood and two years in state prison for unlawful possession of a controlled substance. Both sentences will be served concurrently, Weis said.

The charges stem from incidents that occurred on Nov. 3, 2015, in Oswego and Yorkville, Weis said.

According to Weis, charges were filed against Allgood when, in the early morning hours of Nov. 3, Yorkville police were dispatched to a suspicious vehicle.

“Upon making contact with Allgood, who was the driver of the vehicle, the officer was able to observe that Allgood was using cocaine,” Weis said in a press release. “Officers were able to collect additional cocaine from the person of Allgood. Allgood was then transported to a local area hospital.”

Weis continued, “After being released from the hospital that evening, Allgood went to the Circle K gas station

in Oswego. While Allgood was at the Circle K, he spotted a vehicle running in the parking lot after the driver had gone inside of the business. Allgood got in and drove off without permission of the owner in the stolen car. During an investigation conducted by the Oswego Police Department, the car was found abandoned in Sugar Grove. Allgood was later located by police and interviewed at which time he admitted to officers to stealing the vehicle when he could not locate a ride.”

Allgood plead guilty to possession of a stolen motor vehicle and unlawful possession of a controlled substance on July 12, Weis said. Allgood has been in custody since his arrest on the stolen vehicle charges in 2015, Weis said.

Weis said Allgood has a criminal history that includes prior stolen vehicle cases, making this current offense a Class X felony.

“This type of sentence is necessary due to this defendant’s repeated violations of the criminal statutes,” Weis said. “With Allgood’s history of stealing cars, the judge was left with no other alternative but to sentenced Allgood to a term of prison that will prevent him from further criminal activities for some time.”

In addition to his prison sentence, Allgood will also be required to serve a term of mandatory supervised release, Weis said.

Assistant State’s Attorney Andrea Boyle prosecuted the case, and Allgood was represented by attorney Teresa McAdams, Weis said.

That announcement was made by the new owners, Willis, Shirley and Chris Johnson, owners of the Classic Cinema chain.

When Willis and Chris visited Sandwich, they said WOW 7 theater was the 14th theater in the Classic

Cinema chain. All of the theaters in the chain were older movie theaters they purchased then restored or refurbished in northern Illinois. The Sandwich theater is the second newest; many are much older.

Being worked on first are the projection rooms, lighting in the individual theaters and bathrooms, they reported.

Remodeling and some of the other work will mostly be done in three months, they said, but it will be completely finished by the end of six months.

While children, teens and adults of all ages continue to benefit from owning pets, or simply visiting with them via animal therapy, the benefits are extremely advantageous for senior citizens and research fully supports it.

There’s little doubt that some seniors suffer from isolation and depression, some which is brought on because they don’t enjoy as much social interaction with others as they used to when they were younger. Some are able to alleviate those feelings by moving into a retirement community, such as Heritage Woods of Yorkville.

Others thwart those feelings by spending time with pet animals.

Many people talk to their pet and often feel better even when they’re sad because they have someone to spend time with who listens.

Sometimes petting an animal or just having them sitting on their provides a great deal of comfort and security. In addition, some seniors find themselves becoming far more active because they now have a pet. Whether it’s playing with the pet indoors or taking them for walks outdoors, it forces a senior away from the TV and couch and makes them get up and move so the physical benefits can prove to be enormous.

While many seniors quickly fall in love with their cats and dogs, they’ll be pleased to know that their heart is also benefitting from spending time with them. Studies by the American Heart Association have confirmed that spending time with pets can reduce the risk for heart disease and related illnesses while also lowering blood pressure and promoting happiness and less stressful living.

Boulder Hill burglary County sheriff’s police are investigating a residential burglary that occurred in the 80th block of Ingleshire Road in Boulder Hill Sept.

Arrest vehicle burglary suspects County sheriff’s police arrested two juveniles on charges of burglary to motor vehicles Sept. 16 at 9:10 p.m. in the 0-10 block of Afton Road in Boulder Hill. Police said they made the arrests while they were on active patrol in Boulder Hill and noticed a male juvenile acting suspicious while closing the door to a pickup truck parked on the street.

Upon questioning the juvenile, police said they learned he had just committed a burglary to a motor vehicle.

Klosowski, 61, of the Mountain Ash Drive, Wayne. Police said the accident occurred when a third vehicle driven by Brian A. Mckie, 18, of the 500 block of Ben Street, Plano, crossed over the center line and struck Sanchez-Espinoza’s vehicle.

Police said Mckie was cited for improper lane usage in the crash.

Obstruction investigation County sheriff’s deputies are investigating an incident involving the obstruction of a process server at a residence in the 100 block of Harbor Drive in Oswego Township

Arrested on two warrants County sheriff’s deputies arrested Kylie Marie Willyard, 27, of the 400 block of Park Street, Yorkville, on Route 47 and East Orange Street Sept. 8 at 10:59 p.m. Police said Willyard was wanted on warrant issued in both Kane and DuPage counties.

Domestic battery County sheriff’s deputies responded to a domestic battery incident in the 8000 block of Route 126 in Kendall Township Sept. 8 at 5:32 p.m. Police said a 13-year-old male allegedly struck a parent in the face.

The juvenile was referred to Kendall County Court Services, according to police.

Financial exploitation County sheriff’s deputies took a report involving the financial exploitation of a 72-year-old victim in Oswego Township Sept. 15. Police said the victim reported meeting the suspect on a website and then sending the suspect money. Police said the case is under investigation.

Juvenile on golf cart County sheriff’s deputies are investigating an incident in which a juvenile was observed riding a golf cart on the grounds at Long Beach Elementary School in Boulder Hill Sept. 14 at 2:50 p.m.

Revoked license County sheriff’s deputies arrested Bernardino Sanchez-Jimenez, 29, of the 500 block of East 7th Street, Unit A, Muscatine, Iowa, after stopping his vehicle for a speeding violation Sept. 19 at 9:23 a.m. on Route 71 at Ottawa Street in Newark. Police said Sanchez-Jimenez was charged with driving on a revoked license.

SHAW MEDIA The Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office has charged a man from unincorporated Minooka with aggravated criminal sexual assault and aggravated domestic battery, among other charges.

Kendall County Sheriff’s deputies took a police report Sept. 14 for allegations of criminal sexual assault and ongoing domestic violence of a female by her spouse, police said. The alleged assaults took place over the course of the past several months at a residence in the 3000 block of Route 52 Richard Cleveland in Minooka, police said.

“The victim alleged that during one of the assaults, her spouse pointed a handgun at her,” Sheriff’s Office spokesman Deputy Mike Mrozek said.

On Sept. 20, the State’s Attorney’s Office charged Richard Cleveland, 57, of Minooka, with three counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault, all class X felonies; one count of aggravated domestic battery, a class 1 felony; and one count of aggravated assault with a firearm, a class A misdemeanor.

BRIEF Channahon, Minooka women injured in crash

Two area women – one from Channahon and another from Minooka – were injured in a crash Saturday morning in Kendall County.

The incident occurred at 8:04 a.m. at Route 71 and East Highpoint Road in Kendall Township, according to a Kendall County Sheriff’s Office report.

A vehicle ran into the back of another vehicle that was stopped and waiting to turn left onto East Highpoint Road from Route 71, the report stated. The impact of the crash caused the vehicle that was struck to go into a field.

The driver of the vehicle that was hit was a 66-year-old Channahon woman, according to the report, and her passenger was a 52-year-old Minooka woman. Both were injured in the crash.

The driver of the vehicle that struck them, Katie M. Elleson, 27, of Ottawa, was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

The Bristol-Kendall Fire Protection District responded to the scene.

Knives, pills stolen Two pocket knives and 12 Ritalin pills were stolen from a vehicle that was left unlocked overnight in the 100 block of Heathgate Road in Boulder Hill Sept. 16, according to the county sheriff’s office.

IDNR schedules meeting on chronic wasting disease SHAW MEDIA The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has scheduled public meetings to provide information about chronic wasting disease, its effect on future deer populations, and IDNR’s efforts to control the disease.

IDNR staff will also be available to answer questions about this disease.

Landowners, hunters, and concerned citizens are encouraged to attend.

Chronic wasting disease is an important issue that will dominate deer management discussions in northern Illinois for many years.

An informational meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 28, at Meadowhawk Lodge, Hoover Forest Preserve, 11285 Fox Road in Yorkville.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m.

with a 30-minute presentation and discussion to follow.

Chronic wasting disease is an always fatal neurological disease that is threatening the long-term health of white-tailed deer in Illinois. First documented in Illinois in 2002 near Roscoe, the disease has been detected in 16 counties across the northern edge and northeastern portions of Illinois as far south as the Illinois River Valley. Counties affected include Kendall, Grundy, Will, DeKalb, Kane, DuPage, LaSalle, Jo Daviess, Stephenson, Winnebago, Boone, McHenry, Lake, Ogle, Livingston and Kankakee.

Bert Gray, former longtime director of the Oswegoland Park District, said Rung provided assistance to the park district in his role with the IDNR. As an example, Gray described Rung as being instrumental in providing the park district with information that helped the agency to secure funding in the late 1990s to remove the dam on the Waubonsie Creek in Oswego’s Stonegate Park. The early 20th century dam had served to block fish passage in the creek for decades, which ultimately served to limit the fish population in both the creek and river.

When the dam was removed in the late 1990s, the creek was restored as an active piece of the Fox River ecosystem, Gray said.

“The result today is a much healthier creek and a healthier fish population in the Fox River,” Gray said.

Roger Matile, director of the Little White School Museum and Record columnist, said Rung was a “fishing fanatic” from the time his family moved to Boulder Hill.

Matile added, “Bob’s love of the river, I think, drove him to get the relevant educational credentials so he could join the IDNR and actually make a difference.”

In a statement issued Monday, the IDNR said Rung’s “energy and passion for river conservation were unmatched.” As an example, the state-

ment noted that the water willow is now thriving along the banks of the Fox River thanks to Rung’s “tireless efforts.”

The agency also described Rung as “relentless with permit reviews” and someone who “never backed down from anybody.”

The statement continued: “He was

a true fish nut and loved them all. If you knew Bob, you would not be surprised that he also threw himself into angling with equal energy and passion.

Bob poured jigs, built rods, tied flies, and was always plotting his next fishing trip or strategy. He was well known as one of the best jig fisherman on the Fox River. As a DNR Technician years ago, he revised and updated electrofishing rigs for the whole State and won the Technician of the Year award for many years running.”

The statement concluded, “He was also a longtime crusader for dam removal. Bob will be remembered for the many things he did for Illinois streams over the years, but his most memorable asset was his generous spirit, and undying love for fish and fishing.”

After serving in Vietnam and earning a Purple Heart as a U.S. Army Combat medic, Bob Rung came home to the Boulder Hill subdivision and operated a pet shop for several years in the Wilhelm Building on Jefferson Street in downtown Oswego.

But Rung, who died Monday at the age of 71, stepped away from the shop in the 1980s as he embarked on a new career as an Illinois Department of Natural Resources fisheries biologist whose work helped improve the ecosystems of the Fox River, Waubonsie Creek and other rivers and streams throughout the state.

John Rung, president of Shaw Media, the parent company of the Record, said growing up Bob was more like a father than a brother to him.

“I’m not sure where I’d be without him,” John Rung said. “Bob loved fishing, and he was passionate about conservation and his profession. But most of all he loved his wife, his children, and his growing family. He was truly a devoted husband, father and grandfather.”

Former Oswego Village President Brian LeClercq recalled that he first got to know Rung as one of the many local youths who would frequent Rung’s pet shop.

“Bob was so much fun. I remember going in his shop when I was a youngster and I knew I couldn’t afford a fish and he knew it, too, but he still gave me a guppy for free – a pregnant guppy. A few days after I brought it home I had tank full of fish,” LeClercq said.

Many years later, LeClercq said he reconnected with Rung in his role as a village official. By that time, Rung was working with the IDNR. LeClercq recalled being among a group of volunteers who helped Rung plant lizard tail and water willows at the mouth of the Waubonsie Creek at the Fox River in what is now Hudson Crossing Park in downtown Oswego.

“He was so passionate about the Fox River and he really inspired me and I know he inspired many others,” LeClercq said, adding, “For me he’s one of those individuals that left a mark on my life and got me interested in the environment. He and [the late] Mike Brock [an Oswego High School ecology teacher] were all about the Fox River and inspiring others to try and do their part to

tscott@kendallcountynow.com Oswego Township officials have acknowledged they made a mistake when the township recently erected structures on their property to cover salt and extra equipment without applying for a building permit from the Village of Oswego.

Jay Hoover, the village’s building and zoning manager, said he and township officials met Aug. 25 to discuss the issue. In a letter to township officials, Hoover out- Jim Detzler lines the requirements to obtain building permits for “the membrane structures located and erected at 1150 Route 25” in Oswego.

“There were significant changes to the drainage, and storm water retention area, Gary that should be addressed in Grosskopf the documentation provided for zoning approval and permitting as well,” Hoover wrote.

Hoover wrote that the structures “must be first approved by community development through the planning process. After zoning is approved, a building permit may be obtained.”

“After zoning approval is obtained a building permit must be applied for, and

can be issued when application requirements and review process is complete,” Hoover wrote.

In a response to Hoover, Oswego Township Highway Commissioner Gary Grosskopf wrote that the township would “do everything we can to expedite this process.”

“The Oswego Township road district has begun the process of complying with all aspects of the letter mentioned above,” Grosskopf wrote. “We have hired Tebrugge engineering to draw up the site plan and at the same time work on documentation to apply for building permits.”

For his part, Oswego Township Supervisor Jim Detzler said the buildings are structures used to cover and salt and extra equipment, and are not, to him, “constructable buildings.”

“They put the big hunks of cement and they put a canvas cover over it,” he said.

“It’s not like a constructed building by any means. It’s just a big canvas cover that goes over the salt.”

Detzler acknowledged that the township made a mistake in not applying for a building permit with the village but downplayed the issue.

“You would assume that you wouldn’t need a building permit to cover up your salt, you know,” he said. “Especially when it’s not really, in effect, a building. OK, so we made a mistake. We’ll get a building permit, and that ends it. It’s not the end of the world, you know.”

On Saturday, Minooka hosted its annual cross country flight invitational at Community Park.

The unique event has seven flights in each gender. The number seven runners all race, then the number six runners, all the way down to the number one runners. Your individual place in each flight determines the points they receive for the team.

On the girls side, Minooka came away with four individual champions, but lost the team title to Yorkville by one point, 14-15. Yorkville, which defeated Minooka last week in Peoria, is ranked third in the latest Class 3A poll, while Minooka is fourth. The Lady Foxes had two individual champions on the day.

In flight six, Emily Eberhardt won with a time of 18:35 over the three-mile course.

“This was only my second varsity race,” Eberhardt, a sophomore, said.

“I was hurt my freshman year and have been battling some injuries this year. I was really focused on getting our team off to a good start.

Yorkville then put together four second place finishes behind the Minooka champions. In flight four Alyssa Edwards ran 18:45, Maddie Dearborn ran 18:37 in flight three. Yorkville plays with confidence to rally past DeKalb

ksharp@kendallcountynow.com Although the Yorkville volleyball team may not feature a senior-heavy starting lineup, the Foxes have the experience where it matters most.

Yorkville played with confidence in Thursday’s match against visiting DeKalb despite trailing by five points in the second game. After winning Set 1, the Foxes rallied back from a 21-16 deficit to complete the sweep, 25-19, 28-26.

“We’re so young and it shows on the court. We’re continuously taking steps, and I want us to where we’re at the end of the year and not right now,” Yorkville coach Barbie Langhoff said. “My senior group is phenomenal – especially Laiken [Miller], Emily [Gutzwiler] and Katie [Nolan]. We’re getting there, and this is a great win – especially since we were down. We came back and turned on our energy back on.”

On the other hand, DeKalb was playing in just its fifth match of the season, and fell to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference play.

“We’re still nervous out on the court, and that’s something we’re going to have to fight through,” DeKalb coach Jamie DiMaggio said. “I see our side, and I see them being more consistent. The mental part is a big thing.

“Experience-wise, we’re way below everyone else. We’re trying to keep their head above water.”

Yorkville (14-3, 2-0) took command of the opening game to lead 6-2, but DeKalb’s Hannah Oehlberg (5 kills) put down two kills and a block kill to quickly erase the Barbs’ deficit and put DeKalb ahead 8-7. Yorkville used an ace serve by libero Sydney Hering to break a 13-

13 tie and took advantage of several DeKalb errors including a rotation call to cruise to a 25-19 win.

Yorkville dug itself into a 1611 hole thanks to back-to-back ace serves by DeKalb’s Jacqueline Longeville. Jasmine Kemp, Emma Fellabaum and Oehlberg all scored points in a 4-1 run that pushed the Barbs ahead 21-16.

“We have a really competitive conference between DeKalb, Kaneland and Sycamore. It’s going to be competitive and the girls have to know that we have to come 100 percent on every single game and go all out,” Yorkville coach Barbie Langhoff said. “The growing pains are OK, but one thing cant’ turn into five.”

DeKalb led 23-22 after a Yorkville serving error, but the game was tied four more times before Yorkville sophomore Bella Zeman’s attack found the Barbs’ floor, and DeKalb committed a hitting error to end the match. Zeman led the Foxes with eight kills.

“They have really good ball control, so it was hard to get them out of their system. We got caught a few times,” DiMaggio said. “I see our side, and I see them being more consistent. The mental part is a big thing.”

Gutzwiler finished with four kills, Avery had three kills and two block kills and Miller added 12 assists, five digs and two kills.

Conference play resumes on Thursday as Yorkville hosts Morris.

Yorkville squad shuts out Morris KRISTIN SHARP

ksharp@kendallcountynow.com Yorkville soccer coach Andrew Johnson knows how competitive the Northern Illinois Big 12 East Division is, and the Foxes cannot afford to take a loss if they want a chance at a championship.

The Foxes (8-1-2) earned a 2-0 shutout win over Morris on Tuesday to continue a strong week of play after finishing in a 1-1 tie with Plainfield East on Monday.

The busy stretch also includes a trip to Ottawa on Thursday before hosting Plainfield South on Saturday.

With the win over the Redskins, Yorkville is now 2-1-1 in the conference.

“We have an interesting week and just have to play the best we can play and not worry about the other opponent,” Yorkville coach Andrew Johnson said.

“We’re going to move into the second half of conference and have to give it our best every game. It’s anybody’s conference to take. We just hope our guys give everything they can out there.”

The defense of Spencer Snider, Ethan Piszczek, Steve Ramirez and Alex Barrientos held Morris to only a handful of looks at the Yorkville goal to help pre-

serve the shutout.

After a scoreless first half, Wyatt McKibbon put Yorkville on the board with a shot off his right foot into the lower corner off a ricochet from Jake Rodgers’ initial shot on goal. With just over 10:00 remaining in the game, Rodgers earned his first varsity goal off an assist from Nick Arcara.

On Monday, Jeremy Schwarz scored the lone goal against Plainfield East off a rebound from Bailey Kish’s shot attempt.

“I felt like we played a game that deserved a victory if we worked a little harder,” Johnson said. “It’s a sectional opponent, so a tie looks good. Overall, there were a lot of positives.”

Yorkville also notched a 2-1 win over DeKalb on Sept. 15 after trailing the Barbs at halftime. With a ball played to the sideline, Jackson Torok slipped the ball to McKibbon for the first Yorkville goal. Shortly after that, Bobby Reichert scored off a corner kick to put the Foxes ahead for good.

Yorkville will open the second half of the NIB12 season at home against Sycamore on Sept. 29, and the Foxes will be looking to avenge a 3-1 loss to the Spartans on Sept. 6.

Despite some tough scores against Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference opponents, the Yorkville boys golf team picked up its first win in the final dual match of the season last Friday.

The Foxes (6-5, 1-3) hosted Morris at Blackberry Oaks Golf Course and edged out the Redskins, 165-166. Aidan Miragliotta led the Foxes with a round of 38. Alex Engelken (42), AJ Gorey (42) and Scott Bauder (53) also scored for Yorkville.

“It was our last conference match and we had not won a conference match yet. We talked as a team about what we wanted to see happen that day, and the boys played really, really well,” Yorkville coach Jon Calder said.

“Morris played well too and we beat them by one stroke. They came ready to go. I knew starting the year that our conference was really tough.”

The win came three days after being on the other side of a one-stroke loss, falling to Ottawa, 175-174, on Sept. 13.

“The great thing so far is that seven of our eight players have scored for us in a match. It’s been great to have top to bottom involvement, and that’s a good thing going forward,” Calder said. “We have all but one back for next year, so hopefully that gives us some momentum going into next year as well.”

On Monday, Yorkville traveled to Heritage Bluffs for the Minooka Invite and finished with a team score of 373 to place ninth. Alex Burks led the Foxes with an 81. AJ Gorey, Bauder and Matt Szopinski also counted.

“It’s a nice measuring stick as the season goes along,” Calder said of the Minooka Invite. “We were missing Aiden, who was out sick, so that was a huge score swing for us. We did see some good things and still have some things to work on.”

Yorkville will now turn its focus to the NIB12 tournament at Senica Oaks on Sept. 28.

“I think we’re in a pretty good place.

It seems like everyone know what’s expected of them and not it’s just a matter of going out and playing,” Calder said.

On Sept. 14, Newark won 5-1 over Indian Creek to improve to 3-0 in Little Ten Conference play. Newark also defeated Somonauk 8-2 to improve to 8-2 on the season. Swanson had four goals and Bartkus had three goals. Odum had 12 saves.

Yorkville Varsity : Yorkville picked up a 5-0 win over Rochelle on Tuesday to improve to 10-5. Ashley Hatch won 10-1 at first singles to improve to 11-1 in singles play and 13-2 overall. Bella Perez won 10-2 at second singles after she won nine straight games to rally from a 2-1 deficit. Yorkville defeated Coal City 4-3.

VOLLEYBALL

Newark Varsity: The Norsemen (7-10, 3-0) defeated Hiawatha 25-15, 25-15. Rachel Testin had six kills, Mattie Chapman had five kills and Caeley Larson had five kills and five digs. Olivia Nelson had 19 assists and Riane Tomsa made eight digs.

Newark entered the Mt. Pulaski Fall Festival and finished 12th in the 16-team field with a 1-4 record. Newark fell to St. Thomas More and Fulton and defeated Mt. Pulaski in pool play.

IN bracket play, Newark lost to Williamsville 22-25, 21-25, and fell to Lena-Winslow 17-25, 19-25.

“This was by far the best overall tournament we have ever participated in, featuring 16 teams that are Elite 8, Final Four, and state champions from Class 1A and Class 2A, as well as a number of very good 3A teams,” Newark coach Tonya Grayson said. “We were competitive in all of our matches

with the exception of St. Thomas More, and getting the win vs. Mt. Pulaski was a great confidence builder for our program.”

GOLF

Yorkville Girls: Yorkville defeated Plano 219- 238. Leading scorer for the meet was Kait Natividad with a 42.

Livy Dearborn (56), Avery Pottinger (59) and Naya Campbell (62) rounded out the scoring. Yorkville lost by 11 strokes at Indian Oaks Golf Course against Hinckley-Big Rock.

SWIMMING

Yorkville/IMSA: The Yorkville/IMSA co-op swim team defeated Lemont 11458. The 200 yard medley relay team won in 1:57.99, and Colleen O’Conner won the 200 IM in 2:16.74. The team also won the 200 free relay (1:43.45).

FOOTBALL

Yorkville Sophomore: The Foxes won their fourth straight game 34-10 over Kaneland. Yorkville was led by the defense holding the Knights to only 10 points. The offense accumulated five touchdowns.

“I used today as a learning experience for the big meets down the road,” Knudsen said. It was a smaller pack up front, which will be like the state meet and you have to learn and practice those tactics of running up there. I made some tactical errors today, but I will learn from that and it is always good to win a race.”

In flight four, Minooka’s sophomore Mark Dames placed second in 16:11.

“That was totally unexpected,” Dames said. “I really liked this concept of racing because you really have a chance to win a race and it’s a much smaller group. I like the pressure, that excites me and I’m so happy with the effort and place.”

Local third place finishers were Plainfield North’s Omar Paramo in flight three and a pair of Minooka runners - Jordan Freese in flight two and Jason Hoffman in flight six.

The Knights were well into field goal range – kicker Andreas Matarangas had already booted 23-yard and 24yard field goals in the first half – but opted to give the ball to Alstott on a third-down-and-goal for the winner.

“I believe in all my linemen out there and they did a great job,” Alstott said. “What a great way to end a game.”

For a while it didn’t look like it was going to end favorably for the Knights.

Yorkville had scored touchdowns in three of four possessions and the one that it didn’t score on occurred because the Foxes ran out the clock to end the first half. Trent Delaney (31 carries, 209 yards) and Austin Avery (8 carries, 70 yards) ran all over the Knights, but they had a drive stall deep in Kaneland territory just before the Knights scored the game-winner.

“I think we were able to run the ball pretty well against them, but they made plays when they had to, so give credit to Kaneland for that,” Yorkville coach Dan McGuire said.

“Neither team gave up and each could have. It was a well played football game that unfortunately someone had to lose.”

The Knights led 13-7 at halftime, getting a 34-yard touchdown pass from Douglas to Noel and two field goals, while the Foxes got on the board late in the second quarter on Delaney’s 11yard run. A 12-yard touchdown run

from Delaney gave the Foxes a 14-13 lead midway through the third quarter, but the Knights answered on their ensuing drive as Alstott scampered in for the 5-yard touchdown run with 3:07 left in the third quarter.

Avery’s 3-yard run with 7:30 remaining in the game allowed the Foxes to pull ahead again at 21-20. Then, their defense picked off Douglas on Kaneland’s next play from scrimmage.

That initially appeared to doom the Knights because the Foxes were able to run down most of the clock and get the Knights to use of all their timeouts.

They left them with just enough time for the dramatic finish though.

“We just needed one final chance to try to march down the field and we made our plays and got the ‘W,’” Noel said. “It’s a big win for us. It’s conference and Yorkville is always a tough team, so we’re happy with the win.”

Yorkville will now travel to Morris (3-1) to continue conference play. The Redskins lost their first game of the season on Friday, 21-14, to Rochelle.

Quarterbacks dream about leading their team back from late deficits in the final minutes.

Kaneland’s Jack Douglas had never experienced such glory until Friday night’s Northern Illinois Big 12 East Conference opener at Yorkville.

With no timeouts, just 2:30 on the clock and 76 yards of field to cover, Douglas marched his fellow Knights down field for the victory. He handed off to Jonathan Alstott for the go-ahead score as the sophomore took it in for a 3-yard touchdown and a 26-21 Kaneland lead with just 35.2 seconds remaining.

“This is the first time I’ve ever done it,” Douglas said. “It was a big moment. We were just hoping our defense would make a stop and give us one final chance.”

Kaneland (3-1, 1-0) turned Yorkville (1-3, 0-1) over on downs after a failed fake 42-yard field goal, setting the stage for Douglas (15-of-25, 201 passing yards)
