By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com The Kendall County Board recently approved an agreement with the city of Yorkville to give the city $50,000 toward the Kennedy Road bike and pedestrian trail project.

The board voted 7-1 to approve the intergovernmental agreement at its July 19 meeting. Board member Judy Gilmour voted against the agreement.

abeth Flowers were absent from the vote.

The County Board agreed in May to award the money to the city. The intergovernmental agreement formalizes that decision. The Yorkville City Council approved the agreement at its June 28 meeting.

The money will come from the county’s Transportation Alternatives Program, or KC-TAP. While the program typically funds projects along state or county high-

ways, County Engineer Fran Klaas recommended that the Kennedy Road trail project be accepted as a special circumstance.

The agreement approved by the board states that the trail “will act to promote public safety for the residents of Kendall County on a major municipal connector road.”

Construction of the trail will permit walkers, runners and cyclists to safely access the existing trail network in Oswego and the rest of the Fox Valley.

Council OKs purchase of four police vehicles

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com The Yorkville City Council unanimously authorized the purchase of four police vehicles for the police department Tuesday evening.

Aldermen approved the purchase of two patrol cars, one investigations car, and one administrative vehicle for $161,703.34, from Miles Chevrolet of Decatur.

“This is basically getting us back on track,” said Alderman Larry Kot, chairman of the council’s Public Safety Committee. “We kind of fell behind with our vehicle replacement plan.

Hastert seeks dismissal of hush money lawsuit

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com An attorney for former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert asked a Kendall County judge Monday to dismiss a lawsuit filed by an alleged victim of sexual abuse seeking hush money payments, according to the Associated Press.

Hastert, 74, is serving a 15-month prison sentence for violating banking laws, after he was caught trying to pay $3.5 million to the victim, who says he was abused when Hastert was a wrestling coach at Yorkville High School in the 1960s and 1970s,

according to the AP. The victim filed a breach of contract lawsuit in April stating that Hastert still owes him $1.8 million in hush funds.

BRIEF Yorkville police investigate boy found at water park

Yorkville police are investigating the case of a boy found alone at Raging Waves Water Park on Saturday. Police were called to the water park at 7:35 p.m. for a young boy who was by himself.

“Upon arrival, attempts were made to locate the unknown boy’s family at the water park but were unsuccessful,” police said in a statement. “Later that evening, the young boy’s parents were located. The boy was reunited with his parents.”

The case still is under investigation, police said.

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Law enforcement agencies throughout Illinois, including those in Kendall County, recognized Wednesday as Illinois Speed Awareness Day, promoting safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists throughout the state.

We had a few “frequently asked questions” for our local law enforcement officers about speeding, and they obliged. Responding were Yorkville Police Officer Patrick McMahon, Kendall County Sheriff’s Deputy Frank Pavlik, and the Oswego Police Traffic Unit.

Here are a few of those questions and answers:

What is the most common excuse you hear from motorists you’ve stopped for speeding? How about the funniest you’ve heard?

McMahon: “The funniest are the

Improper lane use and other erratic driving, similar to an impaired driver, are the most common effects of cellphone use while a driver is operating a motor vehicle.”

Oswego Police Traffic Unit: “Ticket quotas are illegal in the state of Illinois. Police departments may not implement a ticket quota system for the purposes of evaluating a police officer. Historically, Oswego Police Department officers issue far more warnings than citations for speeding.”

So in the neighborhoods we’ll get complaints not just about speeding, but about stop signs not being obeyed and the speed limit as well. Especially during the school year, when kids are walking to school, when kids are walking to the bus stops, we’ll get a lot of complaints.”

Those are generally the funniest, and a lot of times they’ll go into detail about what their emergency is, and it’s just too much information.”

“The one I’ve been hearing a lot lately: ‘I was just passing somebody and forgot to slow down after I passed.’ I’ve been getting that one a lot. Or, ‘I was just going with the flow of traffic.’ Regardless if there are cars around them or anything like that. You could be the only car on the road a mile in either direction, but they were just going with the flow of traffic.”

Pavlik: “Several years ago, I conducted a traffic stop on a husband and wife in rural Kendall County for speeding ... They were en route to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Joliet, due to the wife being in labor. The couple declined medical assistance, and the husband assured me he would drive safely and they departed the area with a verbal warning for speeding.

Several weeks later I received a letter from this couple, thanking me for my compassion and professionalism.

officers have discretion in regards to writing a citation or providing a warning during a traffic stop. Officers take several things into consideration when making their decision to write a warning or give a motorist a citation. Some of the deciding factors for an officer include road conditions, weather, traffic congestion, a driver’s past history and if the offense occurred in a rural area or a urban area. The ultimate goal for all officers when enforcing speed laws is to gain voluntary compliance from the motoring public to ensure safe traffic flow throughout the county.”

Oswego Police Traffic Unit: “No. The Oswego Police Department would advise motorists to take the word ‘limit’ seriously and not travel in excess of the posted limit. Often, motorists stopped for traveling between five and seven miles over the speed limit will receive a warning and avoid a citation. However, any time a police officer stops you for speeding – regardless of how much in excess of the speed limit you are traveling – you can be ticketed.”

While our emphasis remains on the people and events in Yorkville and Kendall County, over the past year we’ve broadened our methods of reaching our readers by launching an all new and comprehensive website (KendallCountyNow.com) and expanding our social media presence on Facebook and Twitter. While we’re very pleased with how well our web and social media initiatives have been

received by our readers and advertisers, we remain as committed as ever to publishing an outstanding paper each and every week for our readers.

Over the past year, we’ve added significantly more color photos and advertisements to the paper and in February adopted a new, reader-friendly design and format. Now, with this issue of the Record, we’re pleased to announce that our readers can look forward to finding more local news, more photos and more regular features in their paper every week.

Just a few page turns away you’ll find we’ve brought back our popular monthly “Yesteryear” column, and

in the coming weeks readers will find Yorkville School District students and events highlighted on our weekly “Bulletin Board” page along with more photos of youth teams in our Sports section. ‘Amber waves of grain’ a thing of the past here REFLECTIONS Roger Matile Loyal readers recall that I have a keen interest in how farming has evolved during the past century or so.

And as this time of year rolls around, nothing illustrates the change in farming and farm culture more than the virtual disappearance of small grains in the farming cycle.

Small grains are ancient in origin and were (and in some areas still are) vital parts of the farming process. But not here, and not now.

Defined as cereal grains – wheat, oats, rye, and barley – small grains are, like their cousin, corn, the seeds of genetically modified grasses that humans have relied upon for food for thousands of years.

Drive around the countryside this time of year and you’ll still see a few small grain fields turning a beautiful golden color in the summer sun. But today’s occasional fields of oats and even more rare stands of wheat are pale examples of what farmers planted and grew here a century ago.

Instead of fields of small grains, you’ll see extensive fields of soybeans, a crop that was as rare here in the 1920s as wheat is today, interspersed with huge fields of tall corn swaying in summer prairie breezes.

Why the change, why the evolution? Because times change as does the use to which crops are put. Back in the early 1800s when Kendall County was settled by pioneer farm

Wheat was harvested and ground into flour either on the farm or at one of the new gristmills that were rapidly popping up along every county stream whose bed had enough fall to power a waterwheel.

Oats, on the other hand, were the fuel that powered the horses and mules that were the backbone of power on the farm and in the transportation industry of the era. Granted, oats, too, could be ground into flour

or they could be otherwise processed for use as oatmeal and other purposes, but their primary use was to feed the millions of horses the nation relied on for everything from pulling stagecoaches to delivering beer.

Barley and rye were also used for human consumption by being ground into flour, but they were also popular grains for processing into the beer so beloved by so many in that era when drinking water was mistrusted, and often for good reason. The germ theory of disease was still considered

a radical hypothesis, so wells and outhouses were often adjacent leading to outbreaks of typhoid fever and other waterborne illnesses from which even the wealthy were not immune.

Gradually, farmers became aware that Illinois really wasn’t good wheat country. Wheat likes warm, relatively dry growing conditions, and while we all know Illinois does not lack for summer heat, dry conditions (except during drought years) are not what you find here. As the frontier kept moving west, those ideal wheat conditions were found on the Great Plains in a huge swath from Texas north to the Dakotas.

Improved transportation systems added to the climate soon meant that bread could be baked in regional cities and shipped to small farming towns cheaper than rural folks could produce it on their own.

But that didn’t apply to oats at all, not for more than a century after Kendall County was settled. In 1912, which was close to the high-water mark for oat production, Kendall County farmers harvested 53,000 acres of the grain, producing well over 2.5 million bushels to feed their own horses and mules, but mostly for market. By 2007, so few acres of oats were harvested in Kendall County that the U.S. Department of Agriculture didn’t even report them.

Change is never easy. I personally hate change. You get all cozy and comfortable and used to things, and then all of a sudden your world is upended and is, usually, never the same.

Kendall County has seen its share of change over the past 15 to 20 years.

Small towns have evolved into sprawling exurbs. Farm fields have morphed into shopping malls. And, yes, even your local paper has seen changes, especially in the past year.

But some things are still the same.

Some would argue that our towns – Yorkville, Oswego, Montgomery, Plano, Newark – still have that small town appeal. Festivals with live music and cold beverages still bring people together on the weekends. And folks still gather at the local diner early in the morning to chat about the latest gossip and news.

I started out helping our local paper deliver that news, as a 19-year-old college intern who covered his first plan commission meeting in January

As a senior at Yorkville High School the year before, I had written stories on my fellow students and submitted them as part of a journalism class, where, once a month, our efforts would be published in the Record.

I joined the Record staff full-time in the spring of 2000, and began my career in earnest, covering local government, writing feature stories on local people, and writing columns. I loved every minute of it, and enjoyed meeting local characters; real life really can be stranger than fiction.

I wrote about Bigfoot sightings and sales tax referendums; covered county fairs and murder trials; rode along with police officers and landfill managers. I saw the county and its towns

go through growing pains, with high taxes and overcrowded schools.

Over the years, I’ve covered Yorkville, Montgomery, Oswego, Plano, and even Newark and Lisbon on occasion. I know the country road shortcuts, and I’ve been stuck in my share of traffic jams during construction season (and when is it not construction season around here?).

I moved to Yorkville as a high school freshman in 1992, and other than my brief stay in Charleston during college, I’ve lived in the Kendall County area ever since. I currently live in Oswego with a couple of obese, needy cats named Joe and Porkchop.

Following a year hiatus where I freelanced for a variety of Chicago area publications, I am now back as a full-time reporter with the Record and Oswego Ledger. And I’m working with John Etheredge, the editor of the group and my former news editor at the Ledger.

John and I go back more than 20

years, since I started as an intern at the newspapers, and he and I both have a similar philosophy: that local news comes first, and that community journalism is the bedrock of an informed populace.

I’ll be covering Kendall County Board and city of Yorkville news, along with writing features, as part of my new beat. Along with my coverage will be some changes, and I think they are good. I’ll be able to bring you breaking news faster, with our website KendallCountyNow.com, our Facebook pages for Record Newspapers and the Ledger, our Twitter account @KCRNewspapers, as well as text alerts and our daily morning email newsletter.

We have more tools now as journalists, which means that we have more ways to get you the news that you need. But I also understand that it doesn’t absolve us of our number one job, and that’s to tell the stories of your community.

We savor rules that prevent our Executive, Judicial and Legislative government branches from overpowering each another. We view guarded liberty as humanity’s most sacred independence. Each person is free to maximize returns from time spent employing their skills and time. We prize private enterprise as our nation’s economic system. Free markets afford citizens greater opportunities for personal wealth and exhilaration than any other political scheme. We of America value heritage, integrity, honor, loyalty, courage.

Citizens only in America are not like-minded. They want big government, more “free” stuff, no responsibility to help prolong USA’s long-standing strengths. “I don’t care” and “I want to change America” citizens are detrimental. Enemies inside freedom’s gates.

“Enemies” manifest malice and hostility toward purposes and interests of

citizens who – in this case – defend and sustain traditional American principles.

“I don’t care citizens” remain aloof.

They’re non-voting spectators who relish USA’s benefits but do little to protect or deserve them.

“I want to change America” citizens include turncoats who’ve abandoned long-established America to transform USA into a collective state. They’re aboard Obama’s Red Express to despair.

Obama’s minions: liberals, Democrats, Progressives, local anti-American “changers” among Kendall County’s Democratic Committee who help: Sponsor traitors: Obama, Clinton, Durbin, Reid, Pelosi. Back lies and liars repeatedly, without shame. Fund forgers who re-write American history. Strangle free enterprise with unjustifiable constraints on business. Sustain open borders, which let radical undesirables ravish USA. Prop up terrible, ill-advised, doomed Obamacare. Rig voting machines, proceedings to favor Democrats.

To the Editor: While the legislators and governor of the state of Illinois play their political games, it is the poor and vulnerable who, as always, will pay the price.

The social service agencies that have provided assistance to those who have fallen into difficult times, such as Lutheran Social Services of Illinois, are shutting down needed programs or closing their doors due to nonpayment by the state for past services and lack of funding for the present and future.

Starting them up again will be difficult.

There is a rising sense of despair. We should all remember that “There, but for the grace of God, go I.” Let your state representatives know you care.

was at its height, farmers relied on horses to plant and harvest crops and then haul them to market. Today, gasoline and diesel fuel those activities, which have become entirely mechanized.

And in towns and cities, where horses once hauled everything from passengers in streetcars to mail delivery buggies to the milkman’s delivery wagon, hydrocarbon-fueled machines have replaced the millions of horses that once did those tasks.

By 1900, the nation’s total horse population reached an estimated 24.1 million, with just under three million in cities. In cities with more than 100,000 population there was roughly one horse for every 15 people, varying from one horse for every 7.4 people in Kansas City to one for every 26.4 in New York City. And those horses required millions of bushels of oats for food. The nation’s horse population peaked about 1915, and from then on thanks to the advent of dependable, economical automobiles, the horse population declined by about a half a million animals a year. Along with that decline, the need for oats similarly declined.

Not that folks back then were sad to see horses go, of course. In Chicago in 1900, the city’s 82,000 horses

deposited between 1.2 and 2.4 million pounds of manure and 20,500 gallons of urine in stables and on city streets every day.

In addition, a contemporary expert estimated in 1900 that three billion flies – each a tiny airborne disease factory – hatched in horse manure every day in U.S. cities. It was little wonder automobiles and trucks were welcomed by public health experts of the era.

So the realization that wheat grew better farther west, the disappearance of the horse, and the evolution of Midwestern farming to specialization in either raising grain or livestock led to the annual harvest of small grains and all that it meant to our farmer forebears, both socially and economically, gradually becoming mostly a thing of the past here in the Fox Valley.

The change accelerated as the U.S. transitioned from a largely rural to an overwhelmingly urbanized nation.

And so today, you can drive around Kendall County and still see small stands of small grains here and there.

But the “amber waves of grain” that once were have been almost entirely replaced by corn and soybeans. I’m not sure whether that’s good or bad, but it’s certainly a big change.

U.S. Rep. Hultgren warms up to Trump after Pence selection

By BRETT ROWLAND browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, said he’s warming to the idea of Donald Trump as the next president of the United States during a visit to a Vulcan Materials Co. facility near Sycamore.

Hultgren, 50, told employees at the facility at 15622 Barber Greene Road that he met with Trump recently, and although he didn’t give the Republican nominee a solid endorsement, he said there was “no one in public service” that he respects more than Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, Trump’s running mate.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen in November,” Hultgren said Thursday. “I think the good thing is people are paying attention. I talk about that a lot, how frustrating it is when people feel like elections don’t matter or ‘I don’t have to vote because my vote doesn’t matter.’

“I sense something different this time. I think people are paying attention and are motivated, maybe because they dislike one person or the other person so much, so it should be pretty interesting to have maybe the two least-liked candidates on either side who are our nominees, but it is

Hultgren’s first choice for the GOP nomination was Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker.

As for backing Trump, Hultgren said: “I’m getting there.”

Hultgren said he “appreciated” the process Trump has put together to pick a Supreme Court nominee.

He was less enthusiastic about some of Trump’s other policy plans,

including building a wall along the border with Mexico and a temporary ban on all Muslims entering the country.

Hultgren said that if a permanent border wall is what is needed to protect American sovereignty, he would support it.

However, he said there might be alternatives to building a permanent structure.

As for a ban on Muslims, he said that protecting the U.S. from radicals is important, but a ban was unrealistic.

“That’s never going to happen,” he said.

Brett May, Illinois sales service manager for Vulcan Materials Co., said the company appreciates the work Hultgren has done for the industry, including his support of the FAST Act, which provides $305 billion “for surface transportation infrastructure planning and investment,” according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. Vulcan, the nation’s largest producer of construction aggregates, employs 7,000 people at 315 facilities in 20 states.

Hultgren faces Gurnee Democrat Jim Walz in a contest to keep his seat representing the 14th Congressional District in November.

Arrested in church parking lot County sheriff’s deputies arrested Mason Jerry Lausier, 18, of the 0-20 block of Pickford Road, Boulder Hill, and a juvenile of the 0-10 block of Hillcrest Court, Boulder Hill, in the parking lot of a church in the 10-20 block of Pembrooke Road in Boulder Hill on July 22 at 11:05 p.m. Police said Lausier has been charged with unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of cannabis, and unlawful possession of alcohol by a minor. The juvenile faces charges of unlawful possession of cannabis with intent to deliver (a Class 4 felony), unlawful delivery of cannabis, unlawful possession of cannabis, unlawful possession of alcohol by a minor and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, according to police.

Police said while searching the suspects’ vehicle they found approximately 24.1 grams of cannabis, packaging materials, and a digital scale. Multiple items of drug paraphernalia as well as multiple alcoholic beverages were also located in the vehicle, according to police.

Board member Dr. Robert Brenart explained that this has been an ongoing problem for 14 years and something has to be done about it. “We’ve had a lot of parking lot issues with much-needed repairs,� he said. “Hopefully, we can communicate with the city liaison to see what can be done, but this has been going on for more than 10 years now so we may have to do something ourselves.�

She especially voiced concern with the forthcoming football season quickly approaching, which will result in the parking lot being filled regularly. “I’ve heard a lot of complaints from kids and parents over the years and it’s been a safety issue for a while now,� she said. “Plus it’s a high traffic area.�

YORKVILLE POLICE REPORTS Domestic arrest Yorkville police arrested Marwan T. Johnson, 39, of the 400 block of N. Long Avenue, Chicago, on a charge of domestic battery in the 400 block of W. Washington St., July 25 at 10:29 p.m.

Package missing A Yorkville resident told police that she did not receive a package she ordered from an electronics company June 20.

Police said the package was delivered by Federal Express, left at the resident’s door and then removed by unknown suspects.

Police said the item in the package was valued at under $300.

Hits deer on Route 34 A Yorkville resident told Yorkville police that she struck a deer while driving on Route 34 at Game Farm Road July 24 at 3:50 a.m. Police said the resident’s vehicle sustained minor front end damage.

Drug, cannabis arrest Yorkville police arrested Alexander Alvar, 24, of the 1000 block of Hampton Lane, Yorkville, after stopping his vehicle on Route 47 at Appletree Court July 21 at 2:10 am. Police said Alvar has been charged with unlawful possession of drug para-

phernalia and possession of cannabis.

Vehicle burglaries Multiple items were stolen from a vehicle parked in the 2200 block of Bradford Drive and from another vehicle parked in the 2800 block of Carnston Circle July 20 at 3:30 a.m., Yorkville police reported. Police said there was no forced entry into either of the vehicles.

DUI arrest Yorkville police arrested Juan Garza, 48, of the 2000 block of Munson Street, Plano, after stopping his vehicle on Route 47 at Countryside Parkway July 19 at 9:11 p.m.

Police said Garza has been charged with driving under the influence and driving while license revoked.

Yorkville man sentenced to prison on child porn charge

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountyrecord.com A Yorkville man has been sentenced to state prison for downloading child porn and violating the state’s sex offender law.

Randall J. Anderson, 60, of Riverside Drive in Yorkville was convicted of child pornography and violation of the Sex Offender Registration Act and sentenced to 12 years in prison, according to the Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office. Ten of those years are for the possession of child pornography, and he was also sentenced to a consecutive two years for violation of the Sex Offender Registration Act, according to prosecutors.

Last December, Kendall County Sheriff’s Office investigators were processing Anderson’s address to confirm he was in compliance with the requirements of the sex offender registration law, according to the state’s attorney. Anderson has three previous convictions for child pornography, prosecutors said.

“Detectives obtained and verified Anderson’s computer internet

Investigators later learned, through the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, that 100 images of known child pornography had been downloaded to that computer address,” prosecutors said in a statement. “Evidence of child pornography was discovered on multiple media devices in Anderson’s home.

Additionally, Anderson had previously denied employment of any kind on his previous sex offender registration compliance documentation but was found to be working with computers,” prosecutors said.

Anderson was charged with multiple counts of possession of child pornography involving a minor under 13 years of age, all Class 1 felonies due to his prior convictions, prosecutors said. Anderson was also charged with several counts of violating the Sex Offender Registration Act. In addition to his prison sentence, Anderson will serve three years to natural life mandatory supervised release, or parole, upon his release from prison, and is required to register with the Illinois Sex Offender Registry for his entire lifetime.

Clerk: More help needed on voting day Keep your child safe.

Same-day signup takes extra time; non-election services won’t be offered on Election Day

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Kendall County Clerk Debbie Gillette told the County Board that she will need to dedicate more resources at her office on Election Day, Nov. 8, due to same-day voter registration, as new rules require same-day registration at all polling places.

Gillette said she is also in need of more election judges.

The board unanimously approved a measure this week that will allow Gillette to close the Clerk’s Office on Election Day this year and future election days for services unrelated to the election. Also, the Recorder’s Office will be open for half a day on those days

– from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., according to a resolution approved by the board.

Board member Scott Gryder was absent from the meeting.

Gillette said that during the 2014 general election, she and her staff were challenged because of same-day registration in her office.

“On that day, three Debbie people, plus myself, Gillette handled over 100 voters to register them and get them voted, as well as taking all of the calls from polling places, citizens, and whatnot that occur on Election Day,” she said.

“Well now, we have to do same-day registration in our office as well as in

all the polling places, and do our other duties, which are marriage licenses, notaries, tax redemptions. With the staff that we have, we cannot do the amount of work required of us.”

Gillette said she also needs election judges to help with registration at polling places.

“I need about 200 election judges, in addition to the ones we already have,” she said.

Gillette said she would do a “thorough job” in making sure that the public knows about the changed hours and services at the offices during elections.

“We would post notice that we would be operating only in the election capacity, so that individuals that need

something done could perhaps get that taken care of before or the day after the election,” she said. “We’re just asking for some assistance to work with us so that we can concentrate on the election duties.”

Board member John Purcell asked about the need during spring consolidated elections, noting that the voter turnout is typically low during those elections.

However, Gillette said officials never know for sure how many people will turn out to vote.

“Potentially, but we still have that same-day registration,” she said. “We don’t know what to expect anymore. In March, we had a turnout that wasn’t expected.”

10 years ago, July 2006 • Firefighters battled a blaze at the Precision Lube building on Route 47 north of Route 34. Damage was estimated at $500,000.

Cause was believed to be a faulty transfer pump used to siphon liquid from a drum.

15 years ago, July 2001 • The State of Illinois has budgeted $7 million to purchase the Farnsworth House between Yorkville and Plano.

20 years ago, July 1996 • New traffic signals at Route 47 and Fox Road have been activated.

• The Riverfront Park was opened with a ribbon cutting as part of the Fourth festivities.

• A record 24-hour rainfall swamped Kendall County, causing damage to roads and homes along the rivers and streams. Rain gauges that didn’t overflow topped 14 inches in some places.

35 years ago, July 1981 Two local men raised over $23,000 for Cystic Fibrosis. Dave Avenarius and Robert Davidson had a bet that whoever raised the least, would have their head shaved on July 4.

In the end, they both got their hair cut when a spectator offered $1,000. Donations even included a check for $100 from movie star Burt Reynolds.

40 years ago, July 1976 • Plattville Grade School will not be open this fall. The Yorkville District 115 Board of Education voted to close the school for financial reasons. The meeting was held at the Plattville building, with about 45 residents present.

• The Kendall County Bicentennial Commission announced that 20 historic sites throughout the county will be marked with plaques.

65 years ago, July 1951 • Through cooperation of the Kendall County Board of Supervisors, Sheriff William C. Johnson and the Yorkville Village Board, a two-way police radio is being installed in the Yorkville squad car for use of Chief of Police Frank Martyn. The two-way radio will be of great help in the suppression and detection of crime, and in time of emergency. Sheriff Johnson hopes to have other towns in the county similarly equipped in the future. Martyn’s car will be known as Car No. 3.

45 years ago, July 1971 • The Kendall County Board officially divided the county into two districts is now required by new state law on reapportionment. The county board in the past was made up of the nine township supervisors. It will now be a 10-member board, five elected from each district.

50 years ago, July 1966 • After 102 years in the same family, the Kendall County Record was sold by R. F. Marshall to Howard and Jean Pinc, publishers of the Kendall County News in Plano. The Record was founded May 7, 1864.

• Voters approved a new junior college district.

70 years ago, July 1946 • There will be an organizational meeting of the Veterans of Foreign Wars at the county courthouse in Yorkville Friday. All ex-servicemen who saw foreign service are most cordially invited to be present.

75 years ago, July 1941 • “Little Kendall” did herself proud with a

huge celebration for the County Centennial.

In addition to the parade the programs in the park were hugely attended. Those registering at the Community House numbered 3,000, with many not availing themselves of the privilege to register. Thousands jammed the park on the north side for the crowning of queen Josephine Coselman. The band directed by Wilbur Kuhman had played a concert and at the conclusion, Jerry Groner played a fanfare and the ceremony of crowning the queen began. Miss Coselman and her court, all clad in formal gowns made a picture of beauty perhaps never matched in Kendall County history.

80 years ago, July 1936 • State Engineer R. H. Underhill of Oswego is quite busy with the two bridges and Routes 65 (now Route 25) and Route 30 near Aurora. One is over the Fox River, one over the railroad tracks. Modern machinery and methods make short shift of the obstacle of getting the fill needed for the viaduct over the E. J. and E tracks. This grade separation and viaduct over the tracks will make the crossing a safe one.

The Newark bank was notified and bank guards Thor Vogen and C. W. Nelson shot the suspects. The third was captured nearby.

The Yorkville Fury 8U team closed its season with a first-place finish in the KCBL year-end tournament to finish with an overall record of 29-8. Throughout this season, the Fury played in five tournaments, taking second and third place in four of the five, and took home one championship title. The Fury took first place overall in the league and capped the season with the KCBL league championship. 90 years ago, July 1926 • The Public Service Company has given permission to the state to use the Yorkville dam and approaches over which to build a bridge to be used as a detour during the building of the new concrete bridge over the Fox River.

95 years ago, July 1921 • The Yellow Taxi Company of Chicago has leased some property along the river about three miles east of Yorkville and plan to have a large camp there during the rest of the summer. It is estimated that upwards of 2,000 families will camp here this summer. The drivers of the taxies haven’t a very savory reputation in the community and the people are looking forward to some interesting times. However, the management of the company assures the public that their camp will be thoroughly law abiding and that campers will cause no disturbance.

100 years ago, July 1916 • While Jay McCloud of Plattville was hitching up his horse last week his horse slipped on the sidewalk falling of Mr. McCloud’s right leg and injuring him quite badly. He is improving, but not able to get around.

115 years ago, July 1901 • There was a fire at the Kendall County Courthouse. The floor joist over the steam heating boiler had

taken fire and when discovered had made some headway. An alarm was turned in and the hose company was soon on the fire. The floor to Judge Hudson’s office was partly tore up and the fire soon put out. The loss was not heavy, mostly from smoke and water. The Yorkville Firemen deserve a lot of praise.

120 years ago, July 1896 • The Thomas Mack family of Bristol now ride a new double-seated light buggy.

125 years ago, July 1891 • The flag of the Union unfurled to the breeze on the Fourth of July with 44 stars in its field of blue; it has been enriched by two. Ere many years we expect to see it carry an even half hundred.

130 years ago, July 1886 • Joe Hudson packed his valise and sailed for Seward last week.

The fresh air of Seward will brace him up.

135 years ago, July 1881 • The sad news of the assassination of our President Garfield has cast a gloom over the whole community. A sad Fourth of July surely.

140 years ago, July 1876 • The United States of America is 100 years old. The only set celebration of any magnitude in the county took place at Newark. It included a procession lead by Marshal Fowler and the Newark Brass Band. In Fox Station, there was a basket picnic and celebration in Van Cleve Grove.

A company of ragamuffins headed by the Kendle Kornet Band made much sport for all. In Yorkville and Bristol, at midnight, the church bells were rung, cannon fired and much jubilation, notwithstanding the rain that came down in a steady fall.

150 years ago, July 1866 The surveyors who are surveying the route for the Fox River Valley Railroad arrived in Yorkville. The gentleman in charge of the survey informed us he finds the route very favorable for the economic and rapid building of the road. The route commences at the Illinois River in Ottawa, crosses the Fox River at Mission Island, passes a little back of Millford, crosses Hollenback’s Creek just west of the Millbrook church runs a little north of Mr. West Matlock’s and comes into Yorkville on Hydraulic Avenue.

If they can handle their side of things, we’ll make some big jumps this year. We’re young, and we have a bunch of guys who have never run varsity before. It takes times, and it’s a process.”

Yorkville’s cross country season officially opens on Aug. 10 with the first day of practice, and the Foxes return to Peoria on Sept. 10 for the First to the Finish Invite at Detweiller Park.

“We wanted to get a picture of who we are and what we can do. We have about a month and a half before we go back there, and we have a lot of work to do,” Muth said.

N. Illinois Reds 11U win Silver Bracket championship

The Northern Illinois Reds 11U closed out their 2016 season with a win in the Sliver Bracket championship game at the MCYSA Summer International Championships. The tournament was made up of Top Teams from Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan as well as an All Star Team from Puerto Rico, who the Reds had the opportunity to play on the third day of the event.

FOXES DASH IN THE DARK

At Detweiller, girls finish 2nd to Indiana state champs, boys take 10th

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com The Yorkville cross country team is no stranger to the IHSA state course at Detweiller Park in Peoria, but an extra preview can never hurt.

The Foxes had an opportunity to check their summer training against some of the top teams in the Midwest at Friday night’s Detweiller at Dark event.

Over 1,000 watts of power lighted the course as the high school girls’ race started at 9:15 p.m. and the boys followed at 10 p.m.

“It’s always a great atmosphere,” Yorkville coach Chris Muth said. “It’s like an exhibition in any other sport – you take it semi-seriously, but you’re there for the experience and team bonding, and the running at night and experience on the state course more than anything. It’s something the kids shoot for in the summer; it’s a short-term goal for them. At the end of the day, you’re really a slave to the conditions and it was really hot and muggy out. They ran well for the conditions, so we were happy with that.”

Yorkville – the five-time defending Class 2A state champions – put together the Dashing Disney Princesses squad with three returning All-State runners and captured second place behind Indiana’s state championship team, the Carmel Distance Project, led by race winner Sarah Leinheiser’s top time of 17:17.6 and runner-up Christina Geisler (17:37).

“Carmel is a state championship team and they have a lot of girls back,” Muth said.

“They beat us at the Nike Regionals – they were fourth place and we were fifth – so it’s a good idea for what we’ll have to shoot for. We’re about 30 seconds behind them per person, and that’s not overwhelming to make that ground up. It was great to see them just to

get an idea of what we need to do.”

Nicole Greyer led Yorkville with a sixth-place finish in 17:59, Alexis Grandys was 11th in 18:29 and Olivia Borowiak took 16th in 18:43 while Maddie Dearborn also finished in the top 20, clocking in at 18:46 to place 18th. Alyssa Edwards was 22nd overall (18:52) while Emily Eberhart (19:10), Julia Megazzini (19:32), Piper Buyansky (20:28), Samantha Moreno (21:15), Victoria Crawford (21:20), Mady Klebenow (21:21) and Emily Berge (21:43) also raced.

The Dashing Disney Princesses also raced against some familiar competition, as 2016 Yorkville graduate Summer Pierson put together an allstar team – Chicks with Kicks – that included four other college-bound runners: Batavia’s Dakota Roman, Oswego’s Maddy Kammerer and Julia Manzano and Yorkville alum
