Inaccurate data in electronic report cited by district

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Yorkville School District 115 officials said Friday that general state aid figures that were calculated following the General Assembly’s passage of a stopgap budget last week were off by millions.

The district had reported that they were to receive $4.6 million in general state aid from the state as part of its

funding package under the budget.

However, there was a miscalculation, according to district spokesman Kristine Liptrot.

“The electronic report generated by the district inaccurately estimated the average daily attendance figure,” she said.

“This week it was reported that Yorkville CUSD 115 was in line to receive approximately $4.6M in additional funding for the 2016-17 school year, which included an $83,000 equity grant,” Liptrot reported in a statement.

“However, an analysis by district personnel identified a discrepancy between the state’s and district’s figures that were used in the calculation.

Correcting this discrepancy will result in the district receiving a significant-

ly lower amount of state funding than what was previously reported.”

Rather than $4.6 million, the district is expected to receive “as much as $1.75 million in new revenue, which includes the $83,000 equity grant,” Liptrot said.

“Although lower, the amount still represents a notable increase from fiscal year 2016,” she said.

Liptrot said that once the state finalizes the figures, the updated numbers will be used in the district’s budgeting process. The district’s tentative 2016-17 budget is expected to be presented to the school board in August with final approval scheduled for September, Liptrot said.

The proposed new budget will be subject to a public hearing prior to adoption by the board.

Pay hikes OK’d for Forest Preserve staffers

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Kendall County officials have approved pay raises for a pair of Forest Preserve District staffers.

The Kendall County Forest Preserve District Commission, which shares membership with the County Board, approved a $2,000 annual salary pay raise for Jay Teckenbrock, grounds supervisor at Hoover Forest Preserve, as well as a proposed raise from $14 to $15.50 an hour for Ellis House and Equestrian Center Farm Manager Marty Vick. Forest Preserve Director David Guritz recommended the pay raises.

The commission’s votes came during a July 5 meeting in Yorkville.

On the Teckenbrock issue, Commission President Jeff Wehrli and members Scott Gryder, Matt Prochaska, Elizabeth Flowers, Dan Koukol and Lynn Cullick voted for the pay raise, while John Purcell, Bob Davidson and Judy Gilmour voted against it. On the raise for Vick, Prochaska, Flowers, Cullick, Gilmour and Wehrli voted for it but Gryder, Davidson, Purcell and

Koukol voted against it.

Guritz said that the salary raise for Teckenbrock was to provide incentive to him to continue to work for the district. Also, the county will need to increase his salary starting Dec. 1 to comply with new Department of Labor requirements related to overtime-exempt employees, Guritz explained.

The commission also unanimously approved a new job description for Teckenbrock’s position that includes expanded responsibilities.

Guritz said the district has cut staff and has not filled a part-time office position.

“We’re spread pretty thin – few and far between,” he said.

Wehrli said Vick has taken on additional responsibilities “and we’d like to compensate him for his additional responsibilities.”

“As we get to the next budget season in the next couple months, we’re gonna take a look at everybody and make sure we can do this financially for the future,” Wehrli said.

Guritz said Vick’s position is a “tough job.”

“It takes the right individual who

has the right temperament to be able to do an effective job down there,” he said. “We have that and I don’t want to lose that, and I also want to see that individual awarded or rewarded for his efforts.”

Guritz said Vick looks for savings in the budget, and is engaging the public and trying to draw in more revenue.

“You have someone down there who gets it, who understands the budget goals,” Guritz said. “Don’t lose that because we wanna save a buck.”

Purcell said he was opposed to the pay increases, although Vick is taking on more responsibilities.

“I’m asked to give him more money because you weren’t able to staff properly?” Purcell said.

“I think the answer is, we’re looking at this as part of that picture,” Guritz said. “When you’re down a person and a half, I don’t care what department you’re in, whether it’s a hardware store or anywhere else, someone else is having to work harder to cover for that [position]. Somebody has to stay late, somebody has to handle all the phone calls, somebody has to work with the public, and has to be around that 24/7.”

County highway chief: Fox Road bridge needs replacement

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com The Kendall County highway engineer told the County Board on July 5 that a bridge over a creek on Fox Road just west of Poplar Drive will need to be replaced due to a federal mandate.

Fran Klaas said the 18.5-foot bridge is regulated by the federal bridge inspection system and IDOT, and that the state has recently declared the weight limit to be half of other county bridg-

es. Klaas said the re-evaluation of the bridge is part of a recent federal mandate to agencies to take a look at older bridges for structural integrity.

The bridge was built in 1958 and widened in 1981, Klaas said.

“There is not a single bridge in our entire county highway system that is currently posted for anything less than legal load, which is 80,000 pounds; this will take it from 80,000 pounds to 40,000 pounds,” he said. “That’s a big deal. A garbage truck legally won’t be able to

cross this bridge.”

Klaas acknowledged that the bridge is 58 years old and “near the end of its useful life, but it’s in pretty good shape and I don’t think it would fall down.”

“But I don’t get to make that decision,” he added.

Klaas said the department has a consultant looking at alternatives to closing the road, including sliding a new box culvert under the existing bridge. He said he would bring those options back to the board’s Highway

Committee this month.

Klaas said replacing the bridge would cost about $200,000.

County Board member John Purcell asked what would happen if the county didn’t post the new weight limit.

“I don’t think we have an option,” Klaas responded. “If something were to happen to that bridge, and we had a directive from the department to post it and we didn’t post it, and it collapsed, that would be willful and wanton, and we’d be going to jail probably.”

The annual Ribs on the River Weekend festival will once again transform downtown Yorkville into “Porkville.”

Shay Remus, superintendent of recreation for the Yorkville Parks and Recreation Department, expects over 5,000 people to descend on Bicentennial Park, 131 E. Hydraulic Ave., Yorkville, this Friday and Saturday, July 15 and 16. The event is hosted by the Yorkville Chamber of Commerce, the city of Yorkville and the Chicago Whitewater Association.

Friday’s River Night will feature a cardboard boat race with three race categories: corporate, build at home and build on site. The first race will take place at 6 p.m. Race organizer Stephanie Roskopf of Yorkville Auto Body said those interested in building on-site should arrive by 5 p.m., and that race is limited to the first 15 participants. Registration begins around 4 p.m.

“Do not be afraid of duct tape,” Roskopf suggested. “It will be your friend. We do supply life vests just in case [the boat] does not stay afloat.”

Friday’s River Night also features food vendors and a beer tent from 5 to 10 p.m., and a free family activity area with bounce houses, face painting, arts and crafts and performances. The band Red Woody will take the stage from 7 until 10 p.m. to provide musical entertainment.

“The Knights of Columbus were our winners last year – they were voted ‘Best Ribs’ – and they will be providing ribs to keep up with that Ribs on the River tradition,” Remus said.

Other vendors, like Rosati’s and Pepe’s, will also have food available for those looking for more variety.

Remus said there is still a chance the organizers would bring back the cook-off.

“At this point, it’s definitely an option. We want to see how this year goes with focusing more on the whitewater portion of the event,” she said.

Saturday’s events begin at 10 a.m. with food vendors and the beer tent opening.

A full lineup of country music artists will perform, beginning with the County Line Brothers from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., followed by Whiskey Romance from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., and headlining Back Country Roads from 7:30 until the festival ends at 10:30 p.m. The family area will be open from 1 to 6 p.m.

“This year, we focused our music [for Ribs on the River] on country bands. All of them are very popular bands that we believe should bring in a pretty good draw,” Remus said.

City will have to make a case for home rule Sooner or later, the city of Yorkville will become a home rule community.

Under state law, municipalities are automatically granted home rule status when their populations reach 25,000.

Barring an unexpected home building boom, it will likely be several more years before Yorkville – with a population currently estimated at about 18,000 – reaches 25,000. But rather than wait until the city reaches the “magic” 25,000 population mark, city council members voted June 28 to place a referendum on the home rule issue on the Nov. 8 ballot.

If a majority of city residents vote “yes” on the referendum question, the city will achieve home rule status.

Home rule status would grant city officials greater legal authority to address local problems. For example, the city would be able to craft and approve ordinances addressing specific issues such as those dealing with property maintenance if voters were to say “Yes” to home rule.

However, we believe that passage of a home rule referendum is far from a slam dunk. Say the words “home rule” to many residents and their likely first thought will be increased taxes. And it’s true municipalities that have gained home rule status either through population growth or the ballot box do enjoy greater taxing authority. For example, the village of Oswego – the only home rule municipality wholly in Kendall County – used its home rule status last year to approve a sales tax increase to finance the city’s street maintenance program and the construction of a new police station.

In the coming weeks and months, Yorkville officials will need to explain to city voters why they are seeking home rule status for the city and what it will mean for city residents. Do city officials want home rule status to levy new taxes and, if so, how would those revenues be spent? And if city officials are seeking home rule status for greater regulatory authority, how do they plan to use that authority?

We look forward to hearing and reporting the details on the city’s plans for home rule status so city voters can make an informed decision on the issue in November.

Maramech Hill a local historical gem REFLECTIONS Roger Matile Maramech Hill, near Plano, is one of Kendall County’s most important historic sites. Fortunately for all of us, the Kendall County Board, in conjunction with the Illinois Nature Conservancy, has made sure the historic hill and its environs will be kept in their natural state for future generations by officially designating the area as a nature preserve.

The history of human occupation at Maramech Hill goes back to a time when giant Ice Age mammals roamed the area. Considered a good camping or village site almost from the time the first humans arrived in the area, the hill served as a place of residence and refuge for Indians in the Fox Valley for thousands of years.

In the mid-1970s, when the new bridge was built across the Fox River close to Maramech Hill near Silver Springs State Park, bushels of pottery fragments were unearthed.

Those fragments were the remains of thousands of pieces of pottery manufactured by members of the Mississippian Culture, which occupied the Maramech Hill area a thousand years ago or so.

The Mississippians were the cultural group responsible for building the extensive series of mounds near East St. Louis along the Mississippi River. Monk’s Mound, towering 100 feet in height and covering 16 acres at its base, is, in fact, the largest earthen structure in the New World.

It is clear that to build such giant structures, the Mississippians had to have a very efficient and organized way of life. The area surrounding the mounds near East St. Louis was occupied by as many as 20,000 Indian inhabitants in a series of communities that spread out from the main 4,000-acre Cahokia mound complex.

tration of ancient Illinoisians came from the river bottom land surrounding the area and from colonies established throughout the Mississippi and Ohio River valleys. One such colony, from evidence found at the site, was located at Maramech Hill, and there were probably many others in the Fox Valley as well.

The Mississippian Cultural tradition suddenly died out about 1650 A.D. for reasons still not clearly understood. By the time the first Europeans arrived in northern Illinois in 1673, the Mississippian culture had disappeared.

When those first French explorers arrived in Northern Illinois in 1673, the Fox Valley was not occupied on a permanent basis, but was used as a hunting ground by a number of tribes, primarily those of the affiliated tribes of the Illinois Confederacy.

Although the Illinois Indians were friendly to the French, other tribes were not. In the early 1700s, a conflict between a tribe living in southern Wisconsin and French colonial traders broke into open war.

The Fox Indian Tribe and the French were at constant odds throughout the first third of the 18th century. The dispute, which centered around control of trade, became so hot that the Fox forced the French to stop using the Fox–Wisconsin River route between the Mississippi and Lake Michigan and the Chicago portage as well.

In 1730, the French, becoming fed up with the Foxes’ attitude and actions, gathered several hundred of their Indian allies and nearly exterminated the Fox Tribe in a battle that occurred somewhere in Illinois.

The battle began as a siege in August of 1730 when the Fox Tribe was surrounded on a low hill and forced to dig entrenchments (Fox holes?) by the French and their allies. During a violent nighttime storm, the Fox attempted to flee, but were caught the next day by the allied army and nearly exterminated.

John Steward of Plano decided Maramech Hill was the site of this climactic battle and set out to find information to prove his contention.

Steward even published a book that he felt proved his point. However, later scholarship, from Stanley Faye’s analysis of the topic in 1935 to a definitive map located in French archives and published in the Autumn 1980 Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society (pp. 201-213), has conclusively disproved Steward’s contention, interesting though it remains.

But while Maramech Hill was not the site of the great French-Fox battle, it is none the less an important historical site. In various maps drawn prior to and after the War of 1812 by U.S. Indian agents, the area of Maramech Hill is shown to be the site of important Potowatomi Indian villages. Main Poche, an influential Potowatomi chief who was hostile to Americans during the War of 1812, is known to have had a village with 100 warriors located on the Fox River, possibly at Maramech Hill.

Many of the artifacts found at Maramech Hill and described by Steward in his 1903 book, “Lost Maramech and Earliest Chicago,” especially trade silver items, appear to be, at least from Steward’s own descriptions, from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. These artifacts and others that may be found in the future may bolster the case for the site being Main Poche’s village – only archaeologists will be able to tell for sure.

Given its historical value, it was important that this site be preserved, not to mention its value as a natural area. Fortunately, the county board has realized this, as does the Kendall County Forest Preserve District.

Thanks to them, all of us can visit and enjoy this historic remnant of Kendall County’s distant past.

Rebukes letter

To the Editor: Ed Washak’s sarcastic “Feeling safer already” letter in the June 30 Forum is another of his anti-Congressman Randy Hultgren, anti-Republican, anti-gun propaganda rants. As a public service to Kendall County, I urge Forum readers to please disregard it. Like other opinions he has presented, this Washak endeavor includes more “Washerisms,” a tag I’ve attached to troublesome “misspeaks.”

His progressive pitch is usually anti-Republican, anti-free market, anti-gun, pro-large-government, pro-socialist and pro-welfare-state. He doesn’t identify himself as Kendall County’s elected Democrat Bristol Precinct 3 Committeeman, which KCR’s Letter Policy requires. (“Elected and appointed public officials who write letters will be identified with their titles listed under their names.”)

Obviously, he doesn’t want us to know his political association.

I think a lot of his stuff is lifted right off the Democrat’s central propaganda mill.

KCR’s Letter Policy requires that “letters must be written by the individual whose name appears as the author.”

Now about his newest “Washerisms”: “You can tell this bill (House 5471) is going to be important because it has the word radical in it.” Oh. How so?; “Safety. Safety. Safety. If you say things three times people will believe it.” Not really; “Speaker Ryan, R-Wis., went around and pulled the plugs on the CSPAN cameras.”

No, he didn’t; and “He went into the basement and pulled the breaker for the Congressional AC system to sweat out those pesky demonstrators.” No, he didn’t.

Even though I rebuke Mr. Washak’s letter, I applaud his focus on America’s

turbulent, terrifying gun issue.

As USA people reel from a long line of gun-related tragedies, we must vow to change our culture and policies to stop this cycle of violence.

At the same time, we must uphold our Constitution’s Second Amendment, which grants citizens the right to bear arms.

That’s real safety.

Because of the changes (the majority wanted that, remember?) that our indifference has brought about, we are at the brink of becoming a socialist government nation. This will be the death of America as we know it and our freedoms with it because socialism is all about control.

The colonists who founded this country moved here to get away from just that.

The original Tea Party had nothing to do with Sarah Palin, it was because the British sent a ship loaded with the colonists’ precious tea and taxed it so high the furious colonists boarded the ship as soon as it docked and dumped all the tea overboard. We will be taxed (all of us) for our lifetimes and beyond. All of us who work for a living will be taxed to cover for the poor and since socialism is a great “leveler.”

County seeks federal dollars to help pay for Kendall Area Transit

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com The Kendall County Board voted unanimously July 5 to apply for federal money to help offset the county’s expenses to operate the Kendall Area Transit program.

County Administrator Jeff Wilkins explained that the 5310 federal grant program is administered through the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA).

“These are mainly dollars to help the disabled and the elderly,” he said.

KAT is Kendall County’s public transit service.

According to a memo from Mike Neuenkirchen, KAT program director, officials are seeking $194,000 per year for fiscal 2017 and fiscal 2018.

“The grant offers transit operators in the RTA region the ability to receive reimbursement for the costs involved in providing trans-

portation for seniors and individuals who are disabled,” Neuenkirchen wrote. “Securing these dollars for Kendall Area Transit is crucial at this time. Additional federal funding through the RTA reduces KAT’s reliance on state of Illinois funding during this period of budget instability. Further, additional revenues from multiple sources allow the KAT program to expand services to those who are most in need in our county.”

Wilkins said the federal government has cut the local match percentages in half compared to previous years. The county will have to come up with 17.5 percent and the state will need to provide 32.5 percent of the grant total, which means the federal government will pick up half of the operating expenses, he said.

“It really does help the local taxpayer and allows us to leverage more operating dollars,” he said.

City officials say they expect contractors will install poles and lights on the boxes late this summer or in early fall.

New streetlights coming soon Delay due to IDOT, lighting manufacturer, officials say

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Yorkville motorists and pedestrians should notice new streetlights along Route 47 later this summer or early fall, city officials said this week.

Officials announced in the winter that the new streetlights, to be placed along the highway from Route 126 to Somonauk Street, would be installed in the spring.

However, City Administrator Bart Olson said Monday that the Illinois Department of Transportation “took longer than

we expected to approve the lighting plans” and that the streetlight manufacturer “has taken longer than we expected to make the lights.”

Olson said installation of the lights is now expected in either August or September.

To pay for the lights, the city received an Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP) grant in February of 2013 for $491,270. The city’s local share was $184,352, which was paid for out of the city’s downtown tax increment financing (TIF) district funds.

Gallt explained that teachers use the test data to identify and help students who didn’t meet expected growth.

For example, she said the test results showed a need to work with Hispanic and black students, as the percentage meeting benchmarks was below that of white and Asian students. In math, fewer than 40 percent of black students and fewer than 50 percent of Hispanic students in the district met bench-

marks, compared to almost 70 percent of white students and almost 80 percent of Asian students.

Beginning next school year, 30 percent of teacher and principal performance evaluations in the Yorkville School District will be based on student growth district-wide.

The remaining 70 percent of each educator’s evaluation will be based on professional practice- including planning and preparation, classroom environment, instructional practice, and professional responsibility.

The Performance Evaluation Reform Act (PERA) passed by the Illinois General Assembly in 2010 requires all school districts in the state to take student growth into account when teacher and principal performance is evaluated.

Educator performance will be rated at one of four levels – excellent, proficient, needs improvement or unsatisfactory.

Since students district-wide met expected growth, that would give district teachers and administrators a “proficiency” rating for evaluations.

Yorkville School District 115 students showed expected or slightly better than expected growth overall on tests in all subject areas this spring, and 69 percent met the benchmark, or the level at which they should be performing in their grade.

Director of Teaching and Learning Kelley Gallt presented the results of spring testing to the Board of Education on June 27 at her last meeting as a district administrator. Gallt began work July 1 as the assistant superintendent of learning in Community Consolidated School District 181, serving Hinsdale and Clarendon Hills.

Yorkville’s elementary student results are based on the MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) tests taken this winter. Eighth-grade reading and math results were based on student scores on the PSAT test, a preliminary to the SAT. The district’s consulting firm, ECRA (Education Consulting Research Analytics), used student scores and progress on past MAP tests, AIMSweb tests and local assessments to project where they should have scored in this spring’s tests. If, for example, a student scored a 180 in reading on his last MAP

test, he might have been projected to grow to a 186 by spring. ECRA considers scores that were from 0.29 below to 0.29 above the projected number to be making expected growth.

Data from all subject areas (math, reading and English) shows district student growth at 0.17 above the projected numbers. The results in math were 0.20 above projected growth levels, while reading was at 0.14 above and English at 0.02 above.

Information presented by Gallt showed variances between schools, grade levels and also by ethnicity.

“All schools are unique,” she pointed out, noting for example that Autumn Creek Elementary School houses the district’s bilingual and dual language programs.

Bristol Grade School had the highest percentage of students meeting benchmarks at 85 percent overall, 81 percent in reading and 87 percent in math.

Morris’ David Welter named state representative for 75th District

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Republican David Welter of Morris has been chosen unanimously by the 75th Legislative District Appointment Committee to fill the term of former State Rep. John Anthony.

The committee, composed of Grundy County Republican Chairman Aren Hansen, Will County Republican Chairwoman Kathy Havel, Kendall County Republican Chairman James Marter and LaSalle County Republican Chairman Don Jensen, interviewed eight applicants over the course of a seven-hour meeting David Welter Saturday in Morris.

“This was a challenging decision for the committee because of the depth of talent of all the applicants,” Hansen said in news release announcing the selection. “While we are all going to miss John Anthony, we have no doubt that David Welter will continue his efforts in Springfield and represent the constituents of the 75th District with integrity and zeal.”

Welter said he was honored to be chosen to represent the district.

“I want to thank the chairmen for a thorough and open process,” Welter said. “The real work starts now. I look forward to representing all of

the 75th District and I can’t wait to get out and meet the people of the district.”

Welter, who has served on the Grundy County Board since age 19, was appointed Grundy County chairman Dec. 1, 2014, and still holds the position.

“I am extremely impressed by the level of experience, professionalism and accomplishments that Mr. Welter has packed into his six years in public service,” Marter said in the news release.

“David’s passion, youth and energy will be an asset to the residents of the 75th District.”

Anthony, R-Joliet, resigned June 17 and was named executive assistant to the director of the Illinois Department of Corrections on June 20, according to the department website.

Welter will fill the 75th District house seat until the current term ends in January. He will also appear on the November general election ballot as the Republican candidate for the position in a race Anthony was originally slotted to run against Democrat Martha Shugart.

Anthony was appointed to be the 75th District representative in August 2013 when previous state Rep. Pam Roth, R-Morris, stepped down when she moved to Texas. In November 2014, Anthony won the seat when he faced off against Shugart.

The date for Welter’s official swearing-in will be released in the coming days and his contact information will be made available after he is sworn in.

took the ACT test this spring scored an average composite of 20.9, up from 20.5 last year. Gallt noted that some students take the test multiple times and results of testing this summer could raise that class composite score to 21.

This year’s juniors averaged 20.5 in English and math, 21.3 in reading, and 20.8 in science.

By comparison, the national average ACT composite in 2014 was 21. Among the 11 states in which all students take the test (instead of just college-bound students), Illinois’ composite score of 20.6 that year ranked second.

Gallt and board members credited new curriculum, allowing students to skip introduction to lab science and take biology as freshmen, and more Advanced Placement (AP) classes as contributing to the higher scores this year.

This spring, 316 YHS students took 498 AP exams. In 2010, only 116 AP tests were given in the district. Next year, 591 students are enrolled in AP classes, along with 149 in Project Lead The Way (engineering), and 70 in English 101, a class offering college credit.

The board also approved a new math curriculum for all grades, developed by a committee of 33 staff members.

Michael Duback, assistant director of teaching and learning, said the new curriculum increases rigor and raises expectations for students as it is aligned to the common core and covers more skills. It also adds examples to help teachers and to build consistency across the district.

The committee is revising math assessments this summer for each grade level and the curriculum will be rolled out for teachers in August and in place in the next school year.

YORKVILLE POLICE REPORTS Cited in crash Yorkville police ticketed Wanda Saxsma, 64, of the 100 block of West Immelman Lane, Hampshire, with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident after the vehicle she was driving was involved in a crash on Route 71 at Route 47 at 6:09 p.m. July 9. Police said Saxsma and the driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash, Margaret Walker, 60, of the 100 block of Landrose Lane, Maple Park, were not hurt.

DUI arrest Yorkville police arrested Daniel J. Wormley, 34, of the 500 block of Grand Meadow Lane, McHenry, after stopping his vehicle on Route 71 at Sleepy Hollow Road at 8:15 p.m. July 8.

Police said Wormley faces charges of driving under the influence, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and speeding.

KENDALL COUNTY RECORD The Yorkville Fury 9U team closed its season with a first-place finish in the KCBL year-end Gold Division tournament to finish with an overall record of 48-6-1.

Throughout this season, the Fury played in eight tournaments and went to eight championship games to take

home six titles. The Fury took first place overall in the league and topped off the end of the season with the league championship. They finished the regular season 16-1-1 to earn first place in the KCBL out of 15 teams.

Earlier, the team took second place in the Plainfield Invitational Tournament after falling to the Minooka Rivercats in the championship game.

Foxes fall in St. Charles East Regional opener to close summer season

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com The Yorkville summer baseball team threatened early, but could not find the clutch hits in Monday’s St. Charles East Regional opener.

The Foxes, seeded No. 14 in the 18team bracket, traveled to No. 3 Geneva and fell 5-1 to the Vikings after leaving seven runners on base in the first four innings and two more picked off in the fifth. Yorkville capped the summer season with a 5-7 overall record.

“We had runners on in scoring position in the first four innings and got nothing out of it. I talked to the guys that we’re playing a good team and we’ve got to put some pressure on them,” Yorkville coach Scott Luken said. “If we would have been able to scratch a run or two out of that, maybe it would have been different.”

With the win, Geneva advanced to play No. 6 Crystal Lake South on Tuesday. The regional semifinal games are slated for July 13 with the regional final on July 14 at 3 p.m. at St. Charles East.

“We ran ourselves out of the inning,” Luken said. “Sometimes we can be our own worst enemy, but you want to stay aggressive and the guys are still learning and getting better. I’m disappointed because I thought we played well early, but just couldn’t find a way to scratch some runs across.”

Yorkville knocked out a few early hits against Geneva starter Graham Owen including a pair of singles from Lucas Farren. Ty Liaromatis (2-for3) and Jeffrey Freiberg opened the fourth with a pair of singles and both advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Stephen Sewruk. After a pitching change, Yorkville loaded the bases with one out, but the Foxes were unable to capitalize after a ground out to first and an infield popup.

Yorkville starter Jonathan Jungr was equally effective on the mound, giving up just four singles in the first four innings to help keep the game scoreless. Farren (3-for-4) opened the top of the fifth with a solo home run over the left field fence to give Yorkville the 1-0 lead.

“I just saw a fastball inside and went for it,” Farren said.

Plainfield South 2, Yorkville 0 : The Foxes were scheduled to participate in Oswego’s Wood Bat Tournament on July 6, but due to the heavy morning rain, the tournament was canceled.

Instead Plainfield South traveled to Yorkville for a 9-inning wood bat game and lost 2-0.
