Treasurer urges county board to make change

By MATT SCHURY mschury@kendallcountynow.com The Kendall County Board will take another look at adjusting the amount of compensation board members receive for attending meetings and whether they will be able to continue to receive health insurance benefits through the county.

The board agreed Tuesday morning to hold a special board meeting on Thursday, June 2, to discuss the topic and possibly take action making changes to the pay and benefits made available to board members. The board may also bring up the idea of changing the way members can claim mileage reimbursements for traveling while on county business inside and outside the county.

The board was prompted to set the meeting after hearing from Kendall County Treasurer Jill Ferko, who said the board’s compensation system has

to be fixed.

County board members are allowed to claim an $85 per diem for attending county meetings. In order to be compensated, board members are now required to sign an attendance sheet at each meeting. The board created the sheets a couple of years ago in an effort to verify board member meeting attendance.

However, Ferko said her office struggles every month to make sure attendance sheets are turned in and that meetings occurred when they were scheduled.

“A lot of the same problems that were going on five years ago we are still seeing in our office today, every month,” Ferko told the board. “It’s a struggle.”

She added that she had to track down meeting attendance information by emailing members and sometimes they miss the deadline to turn in vouchers for reimbursements.

The board previously discussed having board members paid a fixed salary and doing away with the per diem system. However, there were not enough votes to approve that change. Some members said they had concerns with fairness since some board members

don’t attend all meetings and the workload placed on board committees varies.

Ferko said she would like the board to reconsider going to a salary-based payment system.

“Obviously I would be in favor of a salary because that would relieve a lot of headaches in our office,” Ferko said.

“It takes quite some time to go through [attendance] and we have to double check everything.”

The board has a fixed amount of time to make the change. Additionally, any change would only affect the five board seats that are up for election in the fall.

The other five members are in the middle of their terms and would remain on the current system. Their compensation levels could not be changed until 2018 when they are up for election.

“There’s two parts to this – the per diem voucher and then there is the salary versus per diem,” Board Chairman John Shaw said.

Board member Lynn Cullick said she would like to know why some board members are opposed to going to a salary system.

“It is my opinion that that system has never really been fixed,” she said.

Residents rally for historic Millbrook Bridge KENDALL COUNTY RECORD About 30 to 40 area residents concerned about the fate of the historic Millbrook Bridge gathered at the bridge in Millbrook on Saturday morning in a show of support for the bridge’s restoration.

The Kendall County Historic Preservation Commission has identified the Millbrook Bridge as an endangered local icon.

The bridge was the only means of crossing the Fox River in Millbrook from 1897 until 1984, when a new bridge

was constructed. Now the original Pratt truss-style bridge is in disrepair and has been closed to pedestrian traffic.

There are tentative plans to connect a series of trails with the bridge serving as the pedestrian path across the river. If a trails plan can be established, then grant opportunities exist to partially fund the restoration that’s required to stabilize the failing structure. The county has some funding set aside and it is the hope of many that those funds can be paired with grant money to save the bridge, instead of being used to demolish it.

The Friends of the Millbrook Bridge gathered at the entrance to the historic structure and held up a sign that read “This Place Matters.” The photo was then sent to the National Trusts’ website and will become part of the nationwide This Place Matters campaign. Organizers of Saturday’s event also hope the photo will help illustrate regional support for the bridge’s restoration in potential grant applications.

His bond on the charges was set at $15,000, according to police.

Police said they began their investigation last Sept. 15 when they received a report from the 1300 block of Lisbon Center Road, Newark, of a home repair fraud incident.

According to police, the complainants reported paying an alleged contractor a total of $5,200 since March 2014 for miscellaneous repairs to their home. The contractor, however, never completed the work and no materials were ever brought to the residence.

Seneca man charged with home repair fraud in Newark incident

Kendall County sheriff’s detectives arrested Steven Ellis, 42, of Seneca on Monday in connection with a home repair fraud incident.

Police said Ellis faces charges of theft (three counts and all Class 3 felonies) and three counts of home repair fraud (all Class 4 felonies).

Ellis was in custody Tuesday at the Grundy County Corrections Center on similar, but unrelated charges, according to police.

The Yorkville American Legion Auxiliary is reminding all area residents that Poppy Days are this Friday and Saturday, May 20 and 21.

Metra to resume studies Metra officials announced Wednesday they will resume studies on the proposed extension of commuter rail service into Kendall County. Brolley said, “Without completing the preliminary study, a Metra extension into Kendall County is not even on the table. We look forward to working with Chairman Oberman and Metra as this project moves forward.”

Oswego Village President Gail Johnson said Hultgren’s questionnaire “confirmed what Kendall County leaders already knew to be true: that an overwhelming majority of elected officials support the completion of the already funded studies to examine the feasibility of an extension of Metra services to Kendall County.”

Johnson continued, “Oswego began working to get these studies restarted

a year ago. Under the direction of then interim administrator Carrie Hansen and then handed off to Oswego’s current administrator Dan DiSanto, we have worked tirelessly lobbying for the completion of these studies. Leaders cannot make decisions without facts.

These studies will provide the facts needed to make an informed and educated decision about commuter rail transportation for our residents. Only when we know those facts can we begin to discuss how to proceed.”

Johnson added that she has been “heartened by the cooperation and collaborative effort of the vast majority of elected officials in our region” on the Metra effort.

“We know that together our communities will accomplish more and I welcome any and all dialogue from my colleagues. Mayors Brolley, [Yorkville Mayor Gary] Golinski, [Plano Mayor] Robert Hausler, and [Sandwich] Mayor [Rick] Olson and Chairman Shaw have been candid and supportive throughout this process. We also had the support of everyone of our Congressional Representatives as well as all of our State Senators and Representatives in Kendall County. That is no small feat,” Johnson said.

Hastert will not appeal conviction, his attorney says SHAW MEDIA Former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert won’t appeal his conviction and 15-month prison term in a hush-money case that centered on his sexual abuse of students when he was a wrestling coach at Yorkville High School, the Associated Press reported May 12.

Washington, D.C.-based lawyer Thomas Green confirmed in an email to the Associated Press that his 74-yearold client won’t file any appeals.

Asked whether Hastert would appeal his conviction or sentence – or any other aspect of the case – Green responded, “No.” He provided no other explanation, according to the AP. Hastert pleaded guilty not to sex abuse but to violating banking law as

U.S. District Judge Thomas Durkin branded the Republican “a serial child

molester” at his April 27 sentencing, where Durkin imposed a punishment that went beyond federal guidelines.

Durkin justified it by pointing to Hastert abusing at least four boys at Yorkville High School when he was a coach and teacher there from 1965 to 1981.

Earlier this week, Yorkville School District 115 confirmed that it will be removing items from YHS bearing the name of Hastert, the former U.S. Speaker of the House.

“The decision has been made by district officials to begin the process of removing signs, banners and trophies that name Dennis Hastert from Yorkville High School,” the district said in a statement.

School District 308 also confirmed that they had removed a plaque from

Oswego High School bearing Hastert’s name a few months ago.

The AP report indicates that had Hastert appealed, he could have tried to argue that the judge put too much weight on something for which the former GOP leader was not charged – the abuse – and shouldn’t have gone beyond the guidelines. But it would have been a longshot, the AP says, because federal judges have enormous discretion.

Appealing the conviction itself would have been even more difficult, since Hastert voluntarily pleaded guilty, according to the AP. Defendants can theoretically claim they were forced to plead guilty or weren’t mentally competent at the time, but such claims are extremely rare and rarely work on appeal, the story said.

U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, is standing with Kendall County area governmental leaders in their efforts to secure the release of $6.6 million in federal funds to complete preliminary engineering and environmental studies for a proposed extension of Metra commuter rail service into county.

In a letter to Martin Oberman, Metra chairman, dated May 6, Hultgren noted that he circulated a questionnaire to Kendall County officials and elected leaders, “to ascertain the support for using scarce funds” to complete the Metra studies.

Hultgren said in his questionnaire he asked local officials if they supported Metra releasing the federal funds.

During a meeting with Kendall County officials in Yorkville in March, Oberman, citing Metra’s budget constraints and need to make improvements to the agency’s existing rail infrastructure, suggested that local officials should seek the release of the funds to pay for some other local transportation project.

But Hultgren said the results of his confidential questionnaire “indicated overwhelming support for the comple-

tion of the initial studies and the release of the estimated remaining $6.6 million in available earmarked funding, currently frozen by Metra.”

Hultgren continued, “The outcome of my questionnaire demonstrates that the leadership of Kendall County is strongly united in the opportunity to extend Metra services throughout their communities. As noted in previous letters and conversations with you, I believe an extension, such as the one being assessed, would benefit the region through job growth and most importantly, offer the communities an additional transportation alternative.”

Hultgren asked Oberman to carefully weigh releasing the funds “and moving forward with completing the studies with the specific earmarked funds.”

He concluded, “The majority of elected leaders and community officials of Kendall County look forward to continuing conversations with you regarding the development of the BNSF (Burlington-Northern Santa Fe Railway) Extension Project to Kendall County as we look to the future.”

Yorkville pride on display in Boston Marathon If you had been standing along the route of last month’s Boston Marathon you would have seen a runner sprint past wearing a black shirt with a big red “Y” for Yorkville High School on it.

That runner was Kerry Stillmunkes, a Yorkville resident, avid runner, Boston Marathon qualifier and a member of a state champion 1992 YHS relay team.

Stillmunkes told our sports editor, Kristin Sharp, she thought it would be neat to wear a YHS shirt in the world’s premiere distance running event.

“I thought it would be really cool to represent my hometown where it all kind of started, at the Boston Marathon. It’s a huge honor to be able to go and it’s a milestone in a marathon

runners’ life,” she said.

Stillmunkes did herself and Yorkville proud by finishing with a time of 4 hours and 4 minutes and 14 seconds--good for a 9:19 minute per mile pace over the tough 26.2 mile course.

She follows in the running shoes of her alma mater’s current and recent

girls and boys cross country teams that have won multiple state cross country championships. Given the growing interest in running at YHS these days, we look for more Yorkville runners to qualify for and run the Boston Marathon in the years ahead. Perhaps Yorkville’s red “Y” will become a familiar site on the streets of Boston.

Humans have always been disruptive to the planet Suzanne Jacobs, writing on the Grist website Dec. 19, reported that: “In a new study published in the journal Nature, researchers report that humans have been ‘agents of disturbance’ on this planet roughly since the dawn of civilization. For some reason, people think that we humans are just sort of passengers on Spaceship Earth who are simply along for the ride and who really cannot affect the planet. Listening to the climate change deniers, one of their major arguments seems to be that humans are too puny to actually have an impact on an entire planet.

However, it doesn’t really take much time or trouble to find out that while most of us have neither the time or ability to come up with a paper like “Holocene shifts in the assembly of plant and animal communities implicate human impacts” that Jacobs cites above, we can find all sorts of evidence that humans can and do have major impacts on the Earth and its environment. Those changes have been, and continue to be, both micro and macro in nature.

Then paleontologists began finding evidence that our ancient predecessors, from Homo erectus to Neanderthals, used mammoths, giant bison and other Ice Age mega fauna for food.

Here in North America, a number of sites have been located where elegantly manufactured Clovis spear points have been found intermixed with Ice Age mammal bones, sometimes even embedded in the bones. That is pretty convincing evidence that the earliest Americans were Ice Age mega fauna predators. And the argument is now being fought out whether or not those hunters and their Clovis technology were so efficient that they wiped out those huge Ice Age animals.

The last two weeks we have been entertained by letters from our state senator and the Yorkville mayor defending what Gov. Bruce Rauner refers to as his workaround agenda. State Sen. Jim Oberweis wants us to know that there is an emergency allocation of education money for the colleges and junior colleges to get them through the summer.

Anyone who has ever gone to college knows how important the summer term is in completing your education. And to have the funding made available will make every bursar’s office giggle with joy. Now the fact that the fall term is about 90 days out, can we expect another emergency allotment? No family has ever had a problem funding their child’s college education after having money promised to them and then have it taken away.

There are layoffs at schools and big tuition hikes happening across the state.

The turnaround agenda probably has provisions for these things. This is how businessmen run government. You want something, you better be prepared to beg.

We are seeing good students go out of state because those institutions aren’t being funded. I’m thinking those students may find greener job pastures out of state after graduation. Is that the governor’s plan? But as Sen. Oberweis was so quick to point out, this measure had bipartisan support. Even Democrats have constituents who need MAP grants.

The next letter had that Wizard of Oz theme. Don’t look behind the curtain, look at what I’m doing over here. Mayor Golinski feels the state is better off if we could do something about that pesky workers’ compensation. It’s so draining on the citizens of the state.

Every Illinois business that has ever failed or moved away did so because of the state’s horrid workman’s compensation provisions. That was the point, wasn’t it, Mayor?

Nothing was mentioned about whether Rauner is even contemplating a budget for year two. We gave up on year one.

Nothing mentioned about how the mayor felt about the governor making lawmakers wait on their paychecks. Is that how CEOs make a statement? Make the help beg for their pay. Did anyone ever figure out if that applied to people like Rauner’s wife’s newly hired chief of staff?

I’m sure we will see more letters about the importance of tax freezes, elimination of collective bargaining and the huge windfalls we see going to state workers who pull up lame at work. How about if we do things like they have been done in the state for over 100 years. The governor gives a budget and everyone works to get it passed. Not that hard.

Helping children succeed

To the Editor: Time and again, we have seen the critical impact a quality education can have on a young person. However, the hard truth is that not every child in Illinois is given the same opportunity to succeed.

When it comes to accessing advanced academic programs, too often, low-income and minority students are being left behind.

Often, it’s because their schools are struggling to pay for even basic programming or are inadequately equipped with a sufficient gifted identification processes.

I have been honored to serve the 38th District of Illinois for nearly six years. I take pride that the some of the school districts I represent provide programming for academically advanced students, but am concerned that disparities exist in the enrollment of low-income and minority students in gifted programs throughout the state.

In fact, a recent report by education advocacy organization One Chance Illinois showed that among the state’s largest districts, Hispanic, black and low-income students have an 18 percentage point, 7 percentage point, and 25 percentage point difference, respectively, between their enrollment in gifted programs and their schools’ student population.

It’s clear more work needs to be done.

That’s why I’m proud to be a sponsor of a bill moving through the legislature that would change the district gifted identification and assessment requirements for school districts to qualify for state gifted funding. If passed, the Untapped Potential Act will be a critical step forward in our quest to provide a quality education for all children in Illinois, especially gifted students from low-income and minority families.

From the earliest days in my legislative career, education has been a cause that I am extremely proud to stand behind.

Today, I am lending my voice to help low-income and minority gifted students get access to the educational experiences they need and deserve.

By being in classrooms that are a better academic fit, children are more likely to reach their true academic potential and develop into our visionaries and leaders of tomorrow.

Yorkville man gets seven years in prison SHAW MEDIA Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis announced Tuesday that Andrew L. Olson, 31, of Yorkville, has been sentenced to a seven-year prison term by Judge Timothy McCann for unlawful delivery of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

According to Weis, Olson delivered cocaine to a person working with the Kendall County Cooperative Police Assistance Team (CPAT) for $1,200 in September 2014. This delivery led to his

arrest by the CPAT. For this offense, Olson received a six-year sentence in state prison.

While out on bond, Olson was in a traffic accident in September 2015. After the traffic accident, officers from the Yorkville Police Department found cocaine that Olson tried unsuccessfully to hide in a bush. Olson received a one-year jail sentence for the charge.

Due to Olson committing one felony offense while on bond for another felony offense, the sentences will run consecutively for a total of seven years in prison.

By Gina Kraman The itchy eyes, drippy nose, and frequent sneezing aren’t just annoying signs of seasonal allergies. They can be signs of future problems including sinus infections, pneumonia, chronic cough, and upper respiratory and ear infections, according to the doctors at Advanced Physical Medicine of Yorkville. “Each year, seasonal allergies continue to get worse. People who have never had allergies in the past, may suddenly start suffering from seasonal allergies. The allergies can lead to secondary problems if they’re not stopped,�

Advanced Physical Medicine says.

The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology states, “Allergies are among the most common chronic conditions worldwide. Allergy symptoms range from making you miserable, to putting you at risk for life-threatening reactions. “If you have an allergy, your immune system mistakes an otherwise harmless substance as an invader. This substance is called an allergen.

The immune system overreacts to the allergen by producing antibodies, which travel to cells

that release histamine and other chemicals, causing an allergic reaction.�

To combat allergies, seasonal allergy testing and treatment options are available. Dr. Farah Malik, internist, Advanced Physical Medicine, performs “skin tests� by putting small amounts of various liquefied allergens (ragweed, pollen, dust mites, grasses, etc.) on the skin, and measuring the response. Health officials: Zika virus a ‘low risk’ in Kendall County

By MATT SCHURY mschury@shawmedia.com Kendall County residents are at low risk for the Zika virus, though there are some precautions that health officials are advising the public to take, especially women who are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant.

Terri Olson, community health services director at the Kendall County Health Department, said the department has tested four pregnant women in the county who have recently traveled to areas where Zika has been discovered, but has yet to get the results.

She added that the cases the Illinois Department of Public Health is dealing with mainly concern pregnant women who have traveled to an area where the virus has been discovered in mosquitoes. In most cases, Olson said, the women do not show symptoms or even know they have been bitten.

“Of course if you are pregnant you don’t even want to take that chance,” she said. “These are only travel associated. We have no local cases, the United States still has no local cases.”

A local case of Zika, Olson explained, would include an infected mosquito that was discovered to have the disease.

While the risk in Kendall County is low,

one of the breeds of mosquitoes that can carry the disease can live as far north in Illinois as Peoria.

“There are no signs of it yet and they are testing different areas … even in Kendall County that they are checking,” she said. “As time goes on, we will be monitoring during the summer time.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Zika virus was discovered in 1947 and is named after the Zika Forest in Uganda. In 1952, the first human cases of Zika were detected and since then, outbreaks of Zika have been reported in tropical Africa, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands.

The virus is spread by mosquito bites. Common symptoms include fever, rash, joint pain and conjunctivitis (red eyes), which lasts for several days.

The CDC points out that most people don’t experience severe symptoms and avoid going to the hospital because they don’t even know they have been infected. Death from Zika virus is very rare, the CDC explains.

“However, Zika virus infection during pregnancy can cause a serious birth defect called microcephaly as well as other severe fetal brain defects,” according to a CDC report.

Though that seems scary, Olson said

the areas in which the mosquitoes carry the disease do not include Kendall County because northern Illinois gets a hard freeze each year, which kills the mosquito.

“We are not really a high-risk area,” she said.

Olson added that doctors are suggesting that women who have traveled to an area with Zika and may have been bitten by an infected mosquito to wait at least six months before becoming pregnant. She said this is more as a precaution since it is not known exactly how long the virus stays in the body.

She said that pregnant women who have traveled can get tested for Zika and should contact the Kendall County Health Department.

“We send the patient to one of the hospitals and there is specific testing for it and a specific timeframe for it,” she said, adding that pregnant women can get tested two to 12 weeks after they come back from traveling.

She added that people should avoid the outdoors during peak mosquito hours, and use bug spray and wear long clothing to combat the pests. Doctors are also advising women who are pregnant or may become pregnant to limit their travel to areas where the virus has not been discovered in mosquitoes.

“We have so many other diseases,

Zika is just highlighted right now,” Olson said. “We see Lyme disease affecting people. … I think you just have to be smart about it.”

Oswego to begin mosquito spraying

At the local municipal level, officials are preparing for mosquito season.

In Oswego, village officials budgeted for 10 mosquito sprays this year with about two per month between May and September, according to Jennifer Hughes, the village’s public works director. The cost of each village-wide application is about $8,600.

Daniel Di Santo, Oswego’s village administrator, said the village contracts the mosquito spraying through a St. Charles-based company, Clarke Mosquito Control Products & Services.

“Internally we are monitoring the situation on the national level. I haven’t seen anything come towards Illinois yet but we have emergency management protocols for any type of epidemic,” he said. “A lot of municipalities stepped up their spraying efforts after West Nile [virus] and Zika is just another reason to continue the programs.”

If the village wanted to step up its monthly sprayings, that would be a village board decision, he said.

YORKVILLE POLICE REPORTS Facing cannabis charges Yorkville police arrested Steven Pastrana-Vasquez, 18, of the 7000 of Dickens Avenue, Elmwood Park, and a juvenile after stopping their vehicle on Saravanos Drive at Bridge Street May 13 at 1:16 a.m. Police said Pastrana-Vasquez, who was driving the vehicle, has been charged with unlawful use of cannabis, unlawful use of drug paraphernalia and unlawful use of a weapon.

Taken into custody Yorkville police arrested Chezeree Hernandez, 21, of the 1200 block of Grand Boulevard, Aurora, while responding to a report of a suspicious circumstance in the 300 block of Walnut Street May 10 at 2:13 p.m. Police said Hernandez was taken into custody after they learned she was wanted on a warrant.

KENDALL COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS Suspect identified County sheriff’s deputies reported May 16 that they have identified a suspect in connection with the breaking out of a rear window of a vehicle parked in the 2200 block of Light Road in Oswego on May 15. Police described their investigation as ongoing.

In custody after pursuit County sheriff’s deputies arrested Edgar Bravo, 36, of the 0-100 block of Old Post Road, Boulder Hill, at his residence May 16 at 9:27 p.m. after he led deputies on a three-mile pursuit. Police said Bravo had been charged with two counts of aggravated fleeing, driving on a suspended license,

Clarke also maintains traps in the village to count the number of mosquitoes, according to Hughes.

“They use the counts, coupled with predictions of hatching based upon rainfall and temperatures, to determine the most effective date to spray,” Hughes said.

The village treats about 3,800 storm catch basins with a larvicide application that inhibits larvae from hatching and becoming adult mosquitoes, Hughes said.

Typically one application is done for the entire season, she added.

Hughes said that Clarke is also preparing information for the village to post on its website that will address the Zika virus.

One hurt; dog killed County sheriff’s deputies killed a dog at a residence in the 40th block of South Bereman Road in Boulder Hill at 6 p.m. May 14.

Yorkville (12-7-2) advances to Friday’s regional championship game against No. 2 Geneseo, which won 4-0 over Streator in first semifinal of the day Tuesday.

Yorkville earned a 3-2 win over Morris on May 10. Peyton Willie scored two of the Foxes’ three goals and assisted in the third. The winning goal was off a free kick, taken by Willie, that hit the crossbar and was knocked in by freshmen Yari Aguado. Yorkville girls qualify seven events to state; boys fourth in conference

Running into a strong wind down the home stretch, there was an added challenge to reach the finish line last Thursday at the Class 3A Ottawa Sectional, but the Yorkville girls track and field team successfully sends eight athletes to state in seven events.

“We’re pleased with how the sectional went. We were close to qualifying in three other events, too, but that’s sort of how a sectional meet – and track meets in general – go,” Yorkville coach Ben Draper said. “The wind that day was coming down the home stretch, and I think that affected a lot of girls’ chances at qualifying, and not just on our team. But that’s why you put in the work early in the season: you don’t want to leave a potential state-meet berth on the line for things outside of your control.”

Sydney Anderson was the first to punch her ticket to Charleston, clearing 5-5 to win the high jump event.

The second sectional championship came in the pole vault, with Louisa Washburn finishing in a tie with Oswe-

go’s Coral Ottesen. Washburn won the jump-off, clearing 11-0 for the sectional title. Washburn later qualified in the 300-meter hurdles, clocking in at 46.04 to meet the state cut and place third.

The 4x800-meter relay team of Emily Eberhart, Becca Jasutis, Nicole Greyer and Alexis Grandys raced to a time of 9:28.72 to qualify and place third overall. Summer Pierson placed fifth in the 3,200, but her time of 11:06.64 was good enough to send the senior to the state finals on Saturday. Julia Schultz advances in the 800-meter run after finishing with a time of 2:19.94 to take fifth, and Greyer clocked in a 1,600-meter time of 5:10.02 to take third and advance.

The boys team competed at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference meet in Sterling last Thursday and now turns its focus to the Neuqua Valley Sectional on Thursday.

Yorkville scored 49 points to take fourth in conference behind Geneseo (139), Kaneland (114) and DeKalb (112).

Gabe Arroyo won the 400-meter dash in 50.90 seconds and Sam Weisz was a twotime conference champion winning both the shot put (53-5½) and discus (169-8).

As west winds gusted up to 25 miles per hour within the tennis courts of the Creason Athletic Complex in Rochelle, the Yorkville boys tennis team withstood the added weather challenges to place fifth at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference tournament.

Geneseo won the meet and the conference championship with 45 points while Sterling scored 24 points in the meet, and finished tied for third in the conference standings with Morris with 34 conference points. The Foxes scored 27 points.

“Everyone either held or improved on their seed, so I was very happy with that,” Yorkville coach Frank Yabsley said. “The weather conditions were brutal with the wind, but I was really surprised it didn’t affect the ball more with the way it was blowing out of the northeast. We were just trying to stay warm. Everything went well. There was no quit in them.”

At No. 1 singles, Eric Nauman entered as the seventh seed and opened with a 6-4 6-3 loss to Morris, but avenged an earlier loss to LaSalle-Peru 6-3, 7-5. Nauman dropped a two-set

match to No. 4-seeded Geneseo, 6-4, 6-3, to place sixth.

“I’ve never seen one singles throughout our season be so tough. He’s been in every match and he’s about .500 now; there’s only been two matches that he wasn’t in,” Yabsley said. “It’s really something going from No. 1 singles on the JV team last year to No. 1 singles on varsity as a sophomore and holding his own the way he did, that was tremendous. He’s worked so hard at it.”

At second singles, Josh Tatum upheld his top seed by winning the conference title. He swept Rochelle in straight games, defeated Sterling 6-3, 6-0 and shut out Ottawa in the championship match to improve to 21-0 this season.

The No. 1 doubles team of Alex Burks and Zach Miesuk opened with a 6-4, 6-2 loss to DeKalb, but ended with wins over Sterling (7-5, 6-3) and Ottawa (6-4, 6-3) to place fifth. At second doubles, Ethan Piszczek and Clay Elleby finished fifth after a 6-0, 6-4 loss to Morris and wins over Rochelle (6-2, 6-1) and Sterling (3-6, 6-1, 10-5).

The No. 3 doubles team of Chase Aulis and Rey Castro finished in fifth place after avenging earlier season losses to DeKalb (7-5, 6-1) and Ottawa (6-2, 6-4).

SENIORS CELEBRATE Foxes rally for 4-3 win over visiting Kaneland in eight innings

By CHRIS WALKER sports@kendallcountynow.com Yorkville’s bottom of the seventh inning rally was far from pretty, but when it ends up being the prerequisite for a walkoff win later, then you’re going take it.

When you can do it against one of your conference rivals, and on Senior Night, then it’s even sweeter.

It proved to be an unforgettable finish for the Foxes and a frustrating loss for Kaneland as the hosts rallied for a 4-3 victory in eight innings. Yorkville also won the series, 2-1.

“It’s a great feeling for these kids, especially these seniors to win this game on Senior Night against a rival conference opponent,” Foxes coach Scott Luken said. “It’s a good memory for the guys.”

Kaneland (11-10, 7-4) starter Jacob Violett looked like he was ready to finish the Foxes off with a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. The senior right-hander had set them down in order in the fifth and sixth, but a hit batter to start the seventh inning ignited the rally.

Violett would unfortunately hit another and combined with a pair of errors, the Foxes fought back to tie the game and send it to extra innings.

“He was pretty good tonight and we just need to play better defense behind him when he performs like that,” Knights coach Brian Aversa said. “We made too many mistakes and we had chances to put the game away in the seventh and we didn’t and then the errors extended the game.”

Yorkville (16-12, 6-6) fell behind in the sixth inning after Luke Calabrese singled and stole a base before scoring on Matt O’Sullivan’s single to right field. The Knights added an insurance run in the seventh as Jake Marczuk, who had singled, scored on catcher Joe Laudont’s drive to right center field that was dropped with two away.

It appeared as if the game was in hand, but the Foxes rallied, ultimately tying the game at 3-3 on Max Warren’s RBI fielder’s choice.

Scott Luken Yorkville baseball coach started. After moving to second on a ground out, his aggressive base running on a ball in the dirt allowed him to move up to third.

Then, with the infield in, junior Brendon Reifsteck sent a seeing-eye single up the middle before being mobbed by his teammates.

“I was just trying to put it in the outfield and hit it hard somewhere,” Reifsteck said. “My teammates did most of the work setting me up.”

It made for quite a finish, especially for seniors like Ferguson.

The loss kept the Knights from

winning the Northern Illinois Big 12 East Conference outright, although they have a makeup game against Morris next week where they’ll have the chance to still do it. At worst, the Knights will be co-conference champions with Sycamore.
