By SUSAN THANEPOHN news@kendallcountynow.com The Yorkville City Council is considering the purchase of body cameras for the Yorkville Police Department.

The department would like to purchase body cameras to be worn by all officers, sergeants and detectives.

A package of 32 body cameras and two 16-bay docking stations from Titan Body Cameras in Minooka would cost the city $49,998. The company offers lifetime support, no monthly fees, and free training and installation.

No one on the council disagreed with the value of body cameras for the police department, but aldermen expressed concern about the logistics behind the program.

Alderman Joel Frieders said he understands the need for this information but is concerned about the massive amount of information it will generate.

“I support the use and acquisition of these cameras, but remain concerned about how the information will be stored,” he said.

Police Chief Rich Hart said, “I think it is a very good tool and is a resource that we need to tap into, but there are a lot of logistical things behind it.”

He explained that when recordings are requested by subpoenas or Freedom of Information Act requests, police personnel would have to go through all of the film for the particular incident and redact frames containing information such as the faces of other people or license plates in the footage.

He gave the example of perhaps three officers responding to a domestic dispute – there would be three separate video files that would each have to be reviewed and redacted for confidentiality purposes.

Hart acknowledged that the department would likely have to add to their staff to do this and this has nothing to do with the upfront cost of the program. He said body cameras would add to the credibility of our officers and hold both the officers and the public accountable for their behavior.

“We need to look at the manpower needed to launch such a program,” he said.

The funds for body cameras are already included in the Yorkville city budget for this year, but Hart said, “We will do our research over the next few months. It has been referred back to the public safety committee for more work.”

The Minooka Police Department spent six months testing the body cameras supplied by the Minooka vendor and ultimately decided to discontinue the use of the equipment.

Minooka Police Chief Justin Meyer said they had no problem with the cameras themselves.

“The problem was the video footage and the tremendous amount of time required to review and redact it.

It was very time-consuming for our staff.”

He said their smaller police department does not have a full-time evidence custodian and it would take an officer off the street to review and redact footage.

“It becomes very burdensome,” he said, but he still maintains that “body cameras can be a great tool for law enforcement.”

New water mains coming to Yorkville’s Church Street

Water main improvements along Church Street in Yorkville will begin early in May, the city announced in a statement issued Friday.

The project will include the installation of new water main from River Road to Somonauk Street.

Completion is expected by the end of June, according to the city.

The city has hired Superior Excavating to complete the project.

Cross Lutheran School enrolling students for 2016-17 school year

Cross Lutheran School in Yorkville is now enrolling for the 2016-17 school year.

The school offers a faith-based approach to learning.

Cross Preschool offers morning preschool classes for 2-yearolds. The 3-year-old and 4-year-old programs offer a variety of morning options, as well as an extended day program.

The preschool uses the project approach and “Handwriting Without Tears” curriculum.

Burks cautioned against attempting to understand the thought process of Hastert or any other child sex abuser.

“First of all, the abuser does not think about their victims and their well-being, it’s all about themselves and maintaining the secret,” she said.

For the victims, Burks said the healing process begins when they are ready to talk about what happened and to know the community is there to help them and believe them.

“I would encourage them to talk with people about their experiences and let people provide support for them,” she said. “They didn’t do anything wrong.”

In this case decades had passed since the abuse took place at Yorkville High School, but she adds it is not uncommon for victims to hold onto their secret for many years.

“They suffer in silence for years and years and years, and sometimes the abuser is a family member and no one in the family knows that that child has been abused,” Burks said.

She had children and grandchildren who went to Yorkville schools.

She holds a master’s degree in education psychology and counseling from Northern Illinois University and a bachelor’s degree from NIU in family social service.

She is a retired therapist who practiced for 25 years and she was the associate director at Mutual Ground in Aurora. She was a clinical supervisor there for the therapists in the sexual program and the domestic violence program.

“It can be very difficult because the system doesn’t always support the victims,” she said.

on the abuse charges leveled against Hastert from the 1960s to the 1980s has run out. Burks said she feels that there shouldn’t be a statue of limitations applied to these types of crimes because sometimes it takes a long time for the incidents to be revealed.

“There is a high level of secrecy and it is in the perpetrator’s best interest to keep that secrecy,” she said.

“Sometimes kids block out what has happened to them and they don’t realize that the behaviors they are experiencing and the difficulties they are going through in life are related to that until they wind up in therapy years later and it starts to unravel for them and they make that discovery.”

For the many people who knew and supported Hastert during his lengthy political career, it can be tough to come to the realization that he did such things. But Burks said healing needs to happen in the community as well and a conversation has to take place.

“There’s people that are shocked about what has happened and there are people who still have disbelief because they find it so difficult to be able

Learning the truth about Dennis Hastert may take some time for some people to accept, Judith Burks, a longtime Yorkville resident and retired sexual abuse/sexual assault therapist, said this week, but for his victims the healing should finally be able to begin.

Burks commented after Hastert, the former U.S. Speaker of the House, was sentenced to 15 months in prison in a hush-money case that centered on accusations that he sexually abused at least four students when he was a Yorkville High School teacher and wrestling coach from 1965 to 1981.

She credits one of Hastert’s victims, Scott Cross, with being courageous enough to publicly testify at Hastert’s April 27 sentencing hearing in federal court in Chicago.

“In my personal opinion, when it is kept secret the victim stays tied to the abuse and it just goes on and on and on,” she said. “It’s a very lonely place to be, it’s a secret, it’s maintained for a long time and it affects your self esteem and your self worth. A lot of times victims are not believed when they disclose and then they are victimized again.”

Burks also praised Judge Thomas M. Durkin for his handling of the sentencing given the restraints of the decades-old abuse allegations.

“He was right on the money,” Burks said of Durkin. “He worked within the framework that he had available to him and I think he did a very thorough and fine job. He was in a really tough situation.”

Kendall County Judge Robert Pilmer says a man who alleges Dennis Hastert sexually abused him doesn’t have to disclose his name in his lawsuit against the former U.S. House speaker, according to the Associated Press.

A day after Hastert was sentenced to 15 months in prison in a hush-money case April 27, Pilmer ruled that a man known in court documents as Individual A can proceed with his lawsuit anonymously, the report by the AP says.

Prosecutors in the hush-money cash say Hastert paid Individual A to stay quiet about sexual abuse that occurred when the man was 14 and Hastert was a high school wrestling coach. The man’s lawsuit alleges Hastert still owes him $1.8 million of the promised $3.5 million.

Pilmer did not rule out requiring the man to reveal his name in the future.

Judge correct to press Hastert on extent of crimes Federal Judge Thomas M. Durkin did not mince words April 27 in sentencing former U.S. Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert to a 15-month jail term in a sexual abuse-hush money case. Durkin called Hastert a “serial child molester” and described his attempt to accuse one of his victims of extortion as “unconscionable.”

In addition to jail time, Durkin ordered Hastert to undergo sex offender treatment, serve two years of supervised release after his release from prison and pay $250,000 to a crime victims’ fund.

Hastert admitted in a statement he “mistreated” some of his Yorkville High School athletes when he was a teacher and wrestling coach at the school between 1965 and 1981 when he left YHS to begin his political career. He told the judge and courtroom, “I wanted to apologize for the boys I mistreated when I was their coach. What I did was wrong, and I regret it. They looked to me, and I took advantage of them.”

Fortunately, Durkin did not let Hastert off with a blanket apology. The judge asked Hastert, point-blank, if he had sexually abused three wrestlers – including Scott Cross, the brother of one of his political protégés, former Illinois House Republican Leader Tom Cross and the late Stephen Reinboldt.

Hastert – after conferring with his lawyers – agreed to accept their statements accusing him of sexually abusing them.

We’re pleased Durkin refused to accept Hastert’s initial apology and instead pressed him to admit publicly to sexually abusing multiple victims. Hastert’s victims, their families and the public – whose trust he violated – needed to hear the former House Speaker confirm the heinous nature of his crimes. Hastert’s admission leaves no doubt – as stunning as it still may be to some of his local friends and ardent political supporters – that he was, in fact, a predatory criminal during his years as teacher and coach at Yorkville High School.

Sadly, the judge was limited to imposing a sentence on Hastert only related to the hush money case. The statute of limitations on his admitted sexual abuse of his students at Yorkville High School has long since expired. Within hours of Durkin handing down his sentence, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan called on state lawmakers to enact legislation eliminating the statute of limitations for child sex crimes. Passage of such legislation is long overdue and may provide some measure of consolation to Hastert’s victims and their families.

As for Hastert, his political legacy seemed assured when he left Congress in 2007. He had served as House Speaker longer than any other man and had secured millions of dollars in state and federal funding for numerous and much-needed public works projects throughout Kendall County during his nearly three-decade long political career. He had also retired from public office still enjoying the goodwill of many of his friends and long-time supporters – a rare achievement for a politician.

That goodwill has vanished over the past 11 months, and Hastert will most certainly be remembered first and foremost for committing and then covering up sexual abuse of students at Yorkville High School. That is how it should be.

Idealizing past a chancy business REFLECTIONS Roger Matile From what I’ve heard in the past, the right wing really, really likes Alexander Hamilton, the pride of the Federalists. Unlike, in their view, the squishy liberal musings of a dilettante like Thomas Jefferson, we would be better off hearing about the hard-headed fiscal conservatism espoused by Hamilton in those Advanced Placement history classes everyone was so exercised about last year.

Hamilton, after all, was a war hero, having served ably in the Continental Army, unlike Jefferson who spent the war as a politician.

And Hamilton, as the nation’s first Secretary of the Treasury, had put in place the important underpinnings of the nation’s financial system. Hamilton was considered so important to the nation’s financial history that his portrait was added to the $10 bill.

Which is perhaps an opening for me to comment on the recent suggestion by the feds, instigated by well-meaning folks across the country, to remove Hamilton from the $10 bill and replace him with a woman of note. I think getting a female on the nation’s official tender is a great idea, but the current plan to put her (whoever she turns out to be) in Hamilton’s place is being extremely unfair to Hamilton.

Rather, it would be a lot more fitting to remove the face of crotchety old Andrew Jackson from the $20 bill. To his credit, Jackson threatened to invade South Carolina and hang anyone who subscribed to the nullification movement during the crisis of 1832 – the precursor of the secessionists of the 1860s.

Since he’d hanged and shot a number of folks during his life, his threat was so credible the nullificationists folded like an old map. But Jackson also hated paper money so hotly that he threw the entire nation into depression in 1837 because of it. So having his face on any denomination of paper money is an insult to the old guy.

But I digress. The problem the right wing has is trying to pigeonhole the Founding Fathers into definitions they think fit today’s

political scene. The “liberal” Jefferson was in favor of much less government – in fact, hardly any government at all, which sounds more like the rants of Ted Cruz. Meanwhile, the “conservative” Hamilton and the Federalists were in favor of a strong central government and government regulation of large areas of national life. In fact, Hamilton precipitated the nation’s first tax rebellion, a situation that might have led to the breakup of the country before it got a good start.

Even before the Revolutionary War ended, groups of pioneers were crossing the Appalachian Mountains and settling in Kentucky and other western areas. As more of these pioneer farmers arrived, crop yields produced more grain than individual farm families could consume. Which, of course, was the idea.

But producing grain was one thing; getting it to market was something else. Roads of the era varied in quality from bad to appalling and even the most advanced areas of the country enjoyed only limited overland transportation.

Grain could be turned into meat by feeding it to animals, but the animals then had to be herded to market, a dangerous proposition in the 1790s.

But there was another option. Grain could be fermented and distilled into whiskey. Whiskey was portable and was a good seller. So the farmers of the West of that period – western Pennsylvania and Virginia – made lots of whiskey which was then sold to generate cash.

Enter Alexander Hamilton.

As Secretary of the Treasury, Hamilton was interested in raising money so the Federalists could increase the size of the government and enhance government power. Looking for an easy way to raise cash fast, Hamilton decided in 1791 to tax whiskey.

As I noted, whiskey was overwhelmingly a product of the West. The pioneers moving ever farther west felt the government wasn’t giving them anything for their money. They were getting little protection from marauding Indians, the government was not building any roads or canals to help get their produce to market, and federal land sales favored speculators at the expense of farmers.

treason and imprisoned, but were pardoned by President Washington. And the whiskey tax was never actually collected.

Hamilton came up with a variety of other taxes, from poll taxes to property taxes, which finally pumped money into the young government’s coffers.

It is true that the political party Jefferson formed was the ancestor of today’s Democrats, but Jefferson’s views cannot necessarily be equated with today’s party. Jefferson, as noted above, was for small, almost non-existent, government, contending money spent on most governmental functions

was a waste of resources. Instead, he favored relying on individual citizens.

That sounds a lot like the mantra chanted by today’s right wingers while Hamilton and the Federalists and their insistence on a strong central government – and the ability to tax to finance one – sound closer to what most think of as “tax and spend Democrats.”

The moral of this story is that idealizing the past is chancy business.

Far too often, it just doesn’t fit today’s preconceptions.

Yorkville School Board members hired more than 100 people during a meeting April 25 – chiefly for special education services that have previously been provided by the Kendall County Special Education Cooperative. They also filled a new director of communications position and hired Patrick Browne as director of facility operations to replace Director of Building and Grounds Brian DeBolt who retires June 30 after 24 years with the district.

When the KCSEC is dissolved on June 30, the responsibility for special education programs will shift to the district. Instead of paying the cooperative to provide the services in Yorkville schools, the district will pay the staff as district employees. Most of the special education providers hired were already working in the district.

The board hired three school psychologists, 11 social workers, two physical therapists, a certified occupational therapy assistant, three occupational therapists, and 85 paraprofessionals.

Andrew Baginski, Katherine Dillon and Kris Van Loon were hired as

school psychologists; Elidia Carrera and Diana Hester as physical therapists; Tyra Houlne as a certified occupational therapy assistant; and Sheryl Klebenow, Elise Wagner and Curtis Lubic as occupational therapists.

School social workers hired were Kathleen Coffey, Terri Frisk, Kurt Holubetz, Sopheap Mitchell, Rosalinda Nino, Jocelyn Nolan, Lu Anne Peters, Michelle Quinlin, Melissa Larson, Kimberly Smith and Jaclyn Winter.

Psychologists and social workers were placed on the district’s teacher salary schedule with two years of service added to account for the added certification they must have.

Occupational therapists, physical therapists and certified occupational therapists assistant will receive three percent more than their current salary. The KCSEC was paying their Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund contributions while the district won’t.

The board approved hiring several paraprofessionals. Pay for paraprofessionals will range from $10.50 an hour for a high school graduate with no experience to $16.25 to a college graduate

A further cost for the special education program was approved with the acceptance of a $21,550.38 contract with Datamation Imaging Services of Willow­brook to digitize special education student records. Approval was made subject to the school district attorney’s opinion that the contract sufficiently indemnifies the school district.

Director of Student Services Dr. Hassan von Schlegel noted that records for all other students are already digitized, while the special education student records were kept on paper at the KCSEC office. He said the records will be more secure once digitized and it will be easier to restrict access only to those who need it.

New administrators

New Director of Facility Operations Patrick Browne comes to Yorkville from the Batavia School District where he has been the director of building and grounds since 2009. He has a bachelor’s degree in business management and a Master of Science in school business management from Northern Illinois University, and experience working in the construction trades as a contractor.

His salary will be $123,000 plus administrative benefits.

Kristine Liptrot was hired for the new position of Director of Communi-

cation and Community Engagement.

A resident of Yorkville, Liptrot is currently the director of communications for the City of Elgin. She previously worked as a public relations consultant, a reporter for the Downers Grove Reporter and Sun Publications, and, from 2007 to 2013, she was the director of communications for School District 308, based in Oswego.

Liptrot will be paid $102,000 plus administrative benefits.

Kimberly Hanson was hired for the new assistant principal of student services post at Yorkville Middle School for a salary of $84,000; Zachary Craft was hired to replace Dr. Katie Spallasso as assistant principal of Bristol Bay Elementary School at a salary of $66,750; and Joseph Fornell was hired as a Yorkville High School dean of students, replacing Jamie Kewenig, at a salary of $63,461. All three will also receive administrative benefits.

Other hires approved April 25 include Warren Wolf as a teacher on special assignment; Kendall Sims and Brianna Carbone as Yorkville High School guidance counselors, and Toni Morgan as a third-grade dual language program teacher at Autumn Creek Elementary.

Resignations were accepted from Shawn Corwin as Yorkville Middle School head wrestling coach; Brant Corwin and Scott Corwin as YMS assistant wrestling coaches; Christina Laurich as YMS sideline cheer coach; and Pam Jackson as YHS head poms coach. In ad-

dition, Bristol Grade School first grade teacher Elizabeth Smith was granted a one-year, unpaid leave of absence for the 2016-17 school year.

More positions approved

Board members accepted recommendations to hire a campus monitor and additional secretary for Yorkville Middle School and pay stipends for a Student Services team leader, Student Council adviser, C.S.I. Club adviser, and boys’ and girls’ B soccer team coaches at YMS. Stipends were approved for the YHS Educators Rising Club (formerly Future Educators Association) and Spanish Club, and increased for the YHS head musical director. An additional learning specialist position was approved at Yorkville Grade School.

The board approved recommendations to add three teachers on special assignment (TOSA) positions – one to focus on curriculum and instruction, one on assessment and data analysis, and one on strategic planning. Human Resources Director Troy Courtney presented requests to hire three more YHS campus monitors, two YHS summer school secretaries and one more YHS math teacher. He also proposes making a part-time copy aide position at YHS a full-time clerical job and adding additional hours to a Project Lead The Way engineering teaching position at YHS. Those requests will be on the board’s May 9 meeting agenda for a vote.

Passenger hurt Yorkville police reported that Julie Weeks-Johnson, age not given, of the 900 block of Churchill Drive, Plano, received minor injuries when the vehicle she was a passenger in was involved in a crash on Route 34 at Isabel Drive in Yorkville at 5:29 p.m. May 1.

Police said Johnson was taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora, while the driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash, Heather Jokiel, age not given, of the 5000 block of Oakwood Drive, Lisle, was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

No charges in battery County sheriff’s deputies responded to the first block of Bereman Road in Boulder Hill on April 26 on a report of a battery in progress. Police said both parties, two men ages 32 and 42, had minor abrasions

on their knees and ankles but did not wish to sign complaints against each other. A 27-year-old woman was also listed as involved in the incident. All of the parties left the area and no charges were filed, according to police.

by Police Chief Richard Hart and Mayor Gary Golinski at the City Council’s April 26 meeting.

Det. John Hunter was commended for a five-month project on the property room, which is essential to operations at the Yorkville Police Department.

Hart told Hunter, “You insured that

the property room will operate with the utmost integrity and accountability going forward.”

Sgt. Raymond Mikolasek received a commendation for his work over the past three years creating a new inhouse monthly training program for officers and a centralized storage area for all training documentation.

SHAW MEDIA A suspect in the armed robbery of an Oswego area gas station-convenience store last month was arrested May 2 by U.S. Marshals in Peoria, Arizona, after police received a tip from the public on Facebook.

The Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office has charged Timothy Wisnauski, 36, of Carpentersville, with armed robbery.

On April 23 police responded to a report of a man who had entered a gas station-convenience store at Route 31 and Light Road in unincorporated Oswego Township armed with a handgun, pointed it at employees and took cash. The store’s video surveillance system captured images of the robber and they were posted on the sheriff’s office Facebook page.

Within a day of the Facebook post, investigators at the sheriff’s office received information from the public concerning the man’s identity. Numerous tips also were received through Kendall County Crime Stoppers.

After receiving the tips, detectives were able to identify the person as Wisnauski and a warrant was issued

Beginning next school year, 30 percent of teacher and principal performance evaluations in the Yorkville School District will be based on student academic growth districtwide.

The remaining 70 percent of each educator’s evaluation will be based on professional practice, including planning and preparation, classroom environment, instructional practice and professional responsibility.

Director of Teaching and Learning Kelley Gallt and teacher Shawn Collins outlined how that decision was reached at last week’s Yorkville School Board meeting.

The Performance Evaluation Reform Act (PERA) passed by the Illinois General Assembly in 2010 requires all school districts in the state to take student growth into account when teacher and principal performance is evaluated.

Educator performance will be rated at one of four levels: excellent, proficient, needs improvement or unsatisfactory. Those rankings are already used by the Yorkville district, Gallt said.

PERA requires all school districts to base at least 25 percent of evaluations on student growth in the first year it is implemented, increasing to at least 30 percent and up to 50 percent in following years. A committee of Yorkville district teachers and administrators planning the implementation of the PERA requirements recommended using 30 percent from the start.

Teachers participated in pilot programs using various types of test results to measure growth and recommended using what is called the “Local Growth Model.�

That model uses district assessments as well as standardized test

measures, rather than just standardized tests or individual classroom tests.

Student performance on tests will be measured from spring to spring with that information used in the following year’s evaluations. The district doesn’t receive results of state tests administered in early spring until near, or after, the close of the school year.

Information presented to the board in March shows that students across the district met their expected growth levels from last spring to January.

Gallt said that would give district teachers and administrators a “proficiency� rating for evaluations.

Collins said teachers felt “some anxieties� about the PERA mandates when they were passed but that concern has eased.

He said that, after teachers attended training explaining the evaluation system earlier this month, the committee’s proposal was very well received. “The staff, without any question, accepted this as part of their evaluation,� Collins said.

Gallt said that the teachers on the Student Growth Advisory Committee were in favor of basing evaluations on student growth districtwide rather than on one classroom or school building. “They felt strongly that we are one district, everyone is pulling the rope together,� she said.

Non-tenured teachers are evaluated every year and tenured teachers every other year. Teachers are observed throughout the school year and most years evaluations are completed by March 1, Gallt said.

Gallt said that the committee will meet again in the first or second quarter of the next school year to see if any changes in the evaluation process are needed.

Yorkville has no answer for DeKalb in shutout loss

The Yorkville girls soccer team may have won the first meeting, but DeKalb has found its revenge on the Foxes.

After being beaten by Yorkville earlier this season, the Barbs have now won two straight against the Foxes after a 1-0 win on Tuesday.

Yorkville won the first matchup 1-0 before losing to the Barbs in the BarbFest title game.

“We were really looking forward to tonight,” Barb coach P.J. Hamilton said. “We knew we were going to come out and get a game. Games like this really help us prepare for the playoffs, and we knew that if we stuck to our game plan that we’d have a positive result.”

The game was physical and intense throughout, and was tied 0-0 at halftime. The game would remain scoreless until the 24:51 mark of the second half, when DeKalb’s Bella Bettner took a pass from Caitlyn Hottsmith and put

Yorkville came into the match with a better overall record than DeKalb at 10-3-2, but dropped to 2-2-1 in the conference with the loss.

“We struggled with finding the net and finishing,” Yorkville head coach Lauren Anderson said. “We had our opportunities, but their keeper made some great saves. As a team overall we really need to work on just winning the ball. DeKalb is a good team, and they were being aggressive and beating us to the ball, which ultimately benefited them.”

With the win, DeKalb improves to 11-5-1 (2-3-1 in conference play). Both DeKalb and Yorkville will take on conference leader Sycamore in the next week. Yorkville will host the Spartans on Thursday, and the Barbs will play them in Sycamore on Tuesday.

“They’ve beaten us already this season,” Anderson said. “They’ve in first place and we’re looking to bounce back, so it’ll be a big game for us.”

Foxes look for consistency Yorkville girls win invitational in an ‘up-and-down year’

There has been outings where everything went right, and outings where things just fell apart. The Foxes have hovered around the .500 mark overall most of the year and are 12-10 overall (2-5 in the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference) after Monday’s 2-1 loss to Morris at home.

“It’s been an up-and-down year,” Yorkville coach Scott Luken said.

“We’ve gone through some struggles, but then had some weeks where we played well. We are looking for the team to play more complete games, and I know we are capable of playing a lot better than we have.”

In the loss to Morris, the Redskins scored twice in the fourth before Yorkville got its run across in the bottom of the sixth. Starting pitcher Cameron Van Boekel (2-5) took the tough loss after he threw

seven innings with three strikeouts and no walks.

“The one big positive was the way Cameron pitched,” Luken said.

“This was definitely his best outing of the year. He deserved a better fate. If he can pitch the way he pitched [against Morris], we’ll be in good shape.”

Last week, Yorkville split games with Ottawa. The Foxes won the first game (11-2 last on April 26) while the Pirates won the second game (3-1 last Friday).

In the first game, Mark Sommers (three hits, three RBIs, two steals, two runs scored), Brendon Reifsteck (three hits, RBI, two runs scored) and Van Boekel (two RBIs) led Yorkville.

In the second game, Ottawa scored three runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to claim the win, despite Jon Jungr’s performance on the mound. He struck out seven and walked three. Ty Liaromatis highlighted the offense with a single, stolen base and a run scored for the Foxes.

For the third straight year, the Yorkville girls track and field team made the trip north to the Woodstock Invitational worthwhile.

The Foxes continued their win streak with a third championship finish Friday night, outscoring DeKalb 120-93 in the 15team event.

“With our girls on Friday night, we were trying a couple different things. A lot of girls were in different events than their usual,” Yorkville coach Ben Draper said. “We knew it would be very hard to win it as a result, and the girls stepped up and ended up pulling away from DeKalb late. We were tied with three events to go.”

In those final three events, Maggie Klemm took third in the 1,600 with a time of 5:19.5, Stephanie Schlichting was third in the 200-meter dash (26.80) and the 4x400-meter relay team of Louisa Washburn, Julia Schultz, Becca Jasutis and Alexis Grandys won with a time of 4:07.40.

Yorkville also won the 4x800-meter relay (9:42) behind the efforts of Grandys, Summer Pierson, Jasutis and Nicole Greyer, and the 4x400-meter relay team also posted a first-place finish (1:47.80) thanks to Schlichting, Mischara Palmer,

Sydney Beach and Washburn.

Meanwhile, the boys team entered the 16-team Red Ribbon Classic at Waubonsie Valley last Saturday and endured cold, rainy and windy condition.

The Foxes scored 39.5 points to take eighth overall. Yorkville did not compete in the final six track events and scratched from several field events. The 200-meter dash only had five competitors and the 4x400-meter event had just four relay teams.

“That was a rough meet weather-wise,” Draper said. “I asked some of my seniors if they thought it was one of the worst they experienced and they replied ‘It’s in the top five.’ The combo of wind and rain made it brutal – one or the other would have been workable. But at a certain point, we decided as a coaching staff that with conference and sectionals on the horizon, the meet Saturday was not doing anything positive for us, and we pulled out.”

Senior Sam Weisz picked up a pair of championship finishes, winning the shot put at 57-6 and hitting the top mark of 161-0 in the discus. Sophomore Peyton Frankenreider was third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.53 seconds. The 4x800-meter relay team of Trevor Wills, Thor Hester, Cody Hornyak and Jake Firrantello clocked in at 8:19.89 to take third.

The Newark softball team isn’t just winning – the Norsemen are winning big.

In the past four games, the Norsemen have scored 66 runs and have won their last three games by double-digit finals. Newark is on a six-game winning streak and was 14-7 overall and 11-2 in the Little Ten Conference entering games this week against Hinckley-Big Rock and Seneca.

“Softball starts with good pitching, and Shelby [Hoddy] has pitched extremely well for us,” Newark coach Mike Crackel said. “Our defense struggled early, but we’ve been working on that and our hitting has been consistent all year.

“Kelsea [Zitt] is having another great year and Emily [Oldenburg] and Megan [DiClementi] have been strong for us. Sara Hipsman has hit well for us, and we have a great group of sophomores who have really come on strong with Alyssa Schofield, Riane Tomsa, Becca Sweeney and Nikki Kala.”

Spirits were high among the Newark baseball team after an 11-0 win at Hinckley-Big Rock in six innings on Monday afternoon. The Norsemen (119, 6-4 LTC) played sharp defense and put pressure on the Royals’ defense all game. Norsemen coach J.R. Veliz was happy with how his team played.

“We are a small-ball team,” Veliz said. “We’re not going to hit home runs. We put the ball in play and see what happens. When we get on, we run and move guys over. Then, you pitch and play defense. That is what we did today.”

In contrast, H-BR (4-12 overall, 4-9 Little Ten Conference) committed six errors and had two balks.

“We just need people to start stepping up,” Royals coach Brandon Jackson said. “We’ve been talking a lot about commitment. To give up 11 runs on six errors is not the way we coach this team. It is all mental. We make an

error and get down on ourselves. We need to do a better job of picking ourselves up and making the next play.”

The defense for the Royals had four of its six errors coming on throwing errors. The Royals also were muted offensively, only getting one runner to second base in the game. They could only muster three hits and they struck out seven times against Newark starter Kevin Klock.

Veliz spoke glowingly about his pitcher, praising how he managed to hit his spots and be effective, despite not having his usual velocity. Klock threw all six innings, striking out seven, while hitting two batters and scattering three hits.

“I felt all right,” Klock said. “I most certainly didn’t have my best stuff, but I went out there and got the job done, I guess. I just try to throw strikes and get groundouts and pop outs. The defense was great today. It gives me so much confidence when they play that well. At that point, I just let them hit the ball.”

Newark also won both games of the doubleheader against Kirkland-Hiawatha – 16-2 in six innings in Game 1 and 18-5 in five innings in Game 2 on Saturday.

In the first game, the Norsemen scored at least one run in each inning and were led by DiClementi (five hits), Zitt (three hits, including a home run) and both Hoddy and Schofield each posted three hits. Hoddy was the winning pitcher.

In the second game, the game was tied at 4-4 after the first inning before the Norsemen scored three times in the top of the third and 11 times in the fourth. Hoddy was the winning pitcher again. At the plate, Newark was led by Sweeney’s five RBIs and Zitt, Oldenburg and Tomsa each ended up with three hits.

In Newark’s biggest win of the season on Monday, the Norsemen topped Hinckley-Big Rock, 24-2, in five innings.

Hoddy picked up her 12th win of the season on the mounds while Oldenburg finished with four hits and Sweeney had three hits.

STRUGGLES AT THE PLATE Yorkville softball drops to 8-13 after losses to Morris, Geneseo

By CHRISTINE BOLIN DASCHER cbolin@kendallcountynow.com While the Yorkville softball team continued to struggle at the plate on Thursday against Morris, the Redskins finished with 16 hits against the Foxes in their 9-0 victory in a Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference contest at Yorkville.

The win moved Morris to 15-5 overall and 6-1 in the conference. The Foxes dropped to 8-13, 2-4 after the 3-1 loss to Geneseo on Friday.

“We are just not hitting, but we are getting better,” said Yorkville coach Jory Regnier, whose Foxes had four hits. “We are working the count more. We had opportunities where we got on – we just didn’t execute. We have to execute and get those runs in or get a couple runs in to change the momentum of the game. I think we are better hitters than we are showing.”

“We spent a long time at practice [on Wednesday] breaking down fundamentals for hitting, and it showed [against Yorkville],” Morris coach Jennifer Lowery added. “The girls were confident going into the box and hit well.”

Morris pitcher Abby Burns finished with nine strikeouts and gave up three walks, as the Foxes left

eight stranded.

“She’s been dominant all season,” Lowery said of Burns. “She did a good job and did what she needed to do. She’s been pitching for us for three years now, and she goes out there every day and does her job.”

Ryan Friend produced Morris’ first RBI of the game in the top of the first. After three scoreless innings, the Redskins had a huge fifth inning with five runs on seven hits, led by back-to-back two RBI doubles from catcher Emily Moore and infielder Ashley Phelps. Another RBI double from Amanda Jenkins gave her team the 6-0 advantage.

The Redskins added three more runs on five hits in the seventh, thanks to a three-run home run to left field from leadoff lady Jasmine Cook.

Calli Bishop, Sydney Woodworth, Bekah Hahn and Ally Martin had Yorkville’s four hits.

“Defensively, we made a lot of great plays,” Regnier said. “We are doing some pretty good things.

The last game we had [a 7-0 loss to Oswego on April 25] with four errors was probably our worst defensive game all season ... at this point, we have to keep switching it up and try to get a lineup in there that is going to give us the best shot to score some runs.
