Bicentennial Riverfront Park in downtown Yorkville should have a playground later this year.

The Yorkville City Council has unanimously approved a purchase proposal totaling $81,815 from Burke Playground for the project.

The nature-themed playground equipment is planned to be installed either late summer or early fall, according to Tim Evans, Director of Parks and Recreation.

SHAW MEDIA A judge overseeing Dennis Hastert’s hush-money case has appointed a doctor to review the former U.S. House Speaker’s medical records, the Associated Press reported late last week.

U.S. District Judge Thomas M. Durkin said in a filing March 31 that Northwestern University Dr. Robert S. Golden would con- Dennis duct the review, the AP Hastert reports. The evaluation was ordered last month after Hastert’s sentencing was delayed because his lawyers told the AP that he had nearly died and remained in poor health.

Hastert is now to be sentenced April 27.

Durkin’s filing says Golden’s practice is affiliated with Northwestern Memorial Hospital and that he is board certified in internal medicine. He also is an assistant professor at Northwestern’s medical school.

In a memo to the council, Evans said they plan to pay for the playground by using $15,000 pledged from the Riverfront Park Foundation as well as $66,815 in funds from a less than anticipated shortfall in the Parks and Recreation budget.

Boulder Hill man arrested on child pornography charges SHAW MEDIA Kendall County Sheriff’s Office detectives arrested Thomas Randall, 63, of the 0-10 block of Pomeroy Road, Boulder Hill, on 12 counts of possession of child pornography while executing a search warrant at his residence April 4.

According to the sheriff’s office, four of the charges filed by the Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office against Randall are Class X felonies, two are Class 1 felonies, five are Class 2 felonies and one is a Class 3 felony.

Randall’s arrest stems from a sheriff’s office investigation that be-

gan Jan. 26 when the office received information concerning a person believed to be in possession of child pornography.

Sheriff’s detectives conducted a criminal investigation, assisted by the Attorney General’s Office and the DeThomas partment of Homeland Randall Security.

Randall was taken into custody without incident and was being held Tuesday at the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville in lieu of bond, which was set at $100,000.

“The FY 17 Parks and Recreation Department budget is based on a budgeted deficit of [$146,000] in FY16. However, staff anticipates the FY16 budget deficit to be closer to [$70,000], a $76,000 difference,” Evans says in the memo.

The City Council could also use Downtown Tax Increment Financing (TIF) funds to match the $15,000 pledge the Riverfront Park Foundation has pledged.

The department would pay the entire cost for the park if the OSLAD grant is not reinstated by Rauner, according to Evans.

Colosimo acknowledged that it is a gamble for the city if they don’t receive the OSLAD grant.

breakfast fundraiser for the season from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m.

By KATHY FARREN news@kendallcountynow.com Most Yorkville School District 115 students hit “benchmarks” for their grade level and showed expected growth in reading and math skills in testing this January.

Data on the test results was presented to the Board of Education last week.

Elementary student results are based on the MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) tests taken this winter. Eighth grade reading and math results were based on student scores on the EXPLORE test, a preliminary to the ACT. A benchmark is the level at which a student should be performing at a given grade level. Assistant Director of Teaching and Learning Michael Duback explained it using the example of the benchmarks for college readiness based on the ACT test.

Students who score the benchmark of 22 or higher in mathematics on that test, for example, are considered to be ready to do well in college math classes.

Overall district students did slightly better in reading than in math on the winter tests.

Student growth

With help from outside consultant ECRA (Education/Consulting/Research/Analytics), the district was also able to see how much student performance had grown since previous tests.

Duback said ECRA used student scores and progress on past MAP tests, AIMSweb tests and local assessments to project where they should have scored in this winter’s test. If, for example, a student scored a 180 in reading on his last MAP test, he might have been projected to grow to a 186 this winter. ECRA considered scores that were from .29 below to .29 above the projected number to be making expected growth.

ECRA’s “richer” analysis allows for a stronger and more accurate projection, Duback said. “As a data nerd, I’m in awe.”

In reading, between 60 percent (Yorkville Grade School) and 73 percent (Bristol Bay Elementary School) of students made expected growth. Between 16 percent (Bristol Bay) and 27 percent (Bristol Grade School) showed high growth (.3 percent or more above their projected level), while between 11 percent (Bristol Bay) and 19 percent (Yorkville Grade) showed low growth (.3 percent or more below their projected level).

In math, between 58 percent (Circle Center Grade School) and 71 percent (Bristol Bay) of students met expected growth levels.

Prairie left early Illinois settlers, travelers in awe Northern Illinois is beginning to edge its way into true spring these days, which means the hoped-for April showers will persuade all those May flowers to begin peeking out of the ground. Of course, the early spring flowers, hardy fellows that they are, have already been growing in the increasingly strong sunlight for several weeks now – especially with the unseasonably REFLECTIONS warm weather of the past few months.

Roger When the first Matile hardy pioneers arrived on the prairies on both sides of the Fox River from Waubonsie Creek to the north south to the AuSable, they found upland prairies dotted with groves of hardwoods that sometimes merged with the belts of trees growing along the creeks that drained the area in what would one day become Kendall County.

Timber, scarce as it was, providing building materials for everything from homes, farm buildings and fences, was the settlers’ old and familiar friend.

What was new to them, and sometimes not a little intimidating, was all that prairie land stretching sometimes to the horizon like an unbroken ocean.

Virtually everyone who left an account of their first few years on the Illinois prairie provided a list of superlatives. And it’s fortunate that some of those accounts survive to let us glimpse what those early travelers and settlers found.

The fascinating English author, abolitionist and sociologist Harriet Martineau visited northern Illinois in 1836, and left a vivid record of the beauty of the Illinois prairie she saw near Joliet. She told of the beauty of the American primroses and the “... difficulty in distinguishing distances on the prairie.

The feeling is quite bewildering. A man walking near looked like a Goliath a mile off.”

Her dinner one evening consisted of tea, bread, potatoes and wild strawberries, of which a whole pail-full had been gathered around the house in which she was staying in only an hour’s time. She remarked about the beauty of the blue spiderwort in full bloom, and of prairies being “perfectly level – a treeless expanse with groves like islands in the distance, and a line of wood on the verge.”

As the season progressed, the grasses and broadleafed plants comprising the prairie ecology dried, providing plenty of fuel for autumn and spring

A number of early Kendall County settlers left accounts of what Kendall County looked like when they arrived, just before settlement changed the prairies forever. To the Editor: “No taxation without representation.�

That was the cry in the 1750s, some 266 years ago, and was responsible for the Colonists’ overthrowing the yoke of oppression with no voice in government.

Sound familiar?

Maybe it’s time for another movement.

Today, the majority of Americans want: a balanced budget; immigration and tax reform; term limits; a gun and environmental policy; a government that works.

You see any changes/movement in that direction in the last 10 years?

All the Founding Fathers – Washington, Hamilton, Jefferson, Madison, Adams – and the original 13 states did not always agree and get along on policies, yet they were able to come together and forge the Constitution and the Bill of Rights for the public good. Today we can’t even get politicians to agree to visit with a Supreme Court nominee – DOA. Time Magazine reports, and I think it’s ironic, that in Madison’s era, “The key to good government was to elect virtuous and ethical political leaders capable of

transcending narrow self-interest and that no one faction should gain undue influence and subvert the public good.�

(That includes lobbyists.) Do you know any politician that fits that definition? In fact, hold that definition up to any of our political leaders today, state or federal.

Work on widening and improving busy Route 34 from Orchard Road in Oswego to Route 47 in Yorkville is expected to be delayed as the Illinois Department of Transportation waits for crews to move utilities.

Work should begin in earnest after Labor Day, Sept. 5, according to Herb Jung, a construction engineer for IDOT. Jung estimates the project will take about two years to complete. Utility poles and gas lines are currently being moved along the highway but, Jung says, AT&T has not yet started moving its infrastructure, which the utility previously estimated would take three to four months to complete.

The contractor on the project, D Construction of Coal City, was the lowest bidder with a bid of $33.2 million.

Last year IDOT estimated the work would cost about $32 million.

Jung said that once utility work is completed, the contractor will begin taking down the traffic lights and replace them with temporary lights.

Crews will also start storm sewer work on the project this fall. Construction on the new roadway will probably begin in early spring 2017, Jung said.

The roadway will be made of concrete pavement and will have a raised median in the center.

“It’s wide enough for bicycles and pedestrians,” Jung said. “I would guess that the contractor could get the underground work and prep the roadbed – the base, the bed of the road through the winter months and into the early spring,” he said. “I would think by mid spring, late spring 2017 we’ll see new concrete pavement going in along the north [side] of what’s there right now.”

Traffic should not be impacted much during construction, Jung said, as they build the two new westbound lanes north of the current road. Once that is finished they will transition traffic onto the newly built road. Construction crews will then tear up and rebuild the existing road to put in the eastbound lanes.

“There’s plenty of room there so we’re going to build two brand new lanes where it is open and we have the right-of-way,” he said.

Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, stating their strong support for the completion of initial environmental and engineering studies for the proposed extension of Metra commuter rail service into the county from downtown Aurora.

Montgomery Village President Matt Brolley told the village board last week he had signed the letter along with John Shaw, county board chairman, Oswego Village President Gail Johnson, Yorkville Mayor Gary Golinski,

Plano Mayor Robert Hausler and Sandwich Mayor Rick Olson.

Brolley noted that he and the other leaders sent the letter to Hultgren on March 25 with the endorsement of their respective boards and city councils.

Hultgren organized a stakeholder meeting which was held March 7 in Yorkville to discuss the Metra extension. County and municipal officials attended the session, along with Metra Board Chairman Martin Oberman and former State Rep. Tom Cross, R-Oswego.

During the meeting, Oberman – citing Metra’s current financial challenges and existing infrastructure needs

– suggested county and municipal officials might want to consider asking that federal funds currently earmarked for further Kendall County Metra service studies be re-allocated to other local transportation improvement projects.

But in their letter to Hultgren, the local leaders note that bringing commuter rail service to Kendall County along the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway’s mainline tracks remains “a top priority for the fastest growing county in Illinois and one of the fastest growing regions in the country.”

The letter also notes that Congress previously allocated $7.5 million to pay for the additional studies of a service

extension based on preliminary studies conducted in 2001 and 2002. Those prior studies determined a service extension from Aurora into the county would be feasible.

The letter continues, “After discussions with our boards, we unequivocally remain steadfast in our decision to finish these studies.

“Completion of these studies will allow us to draw valid conclusions about the ultimate buildout of the project based on sound data. We believe that the studies should be completed to their full scope, including charge orders, in order to have a comprehensive understanding of the project costs and construction feasibility.”

Tires found cut Someone cut the tires on a vehicle parked in the 100 block of Colonial Parkway in Yorkville, police were notified April 2.

Xbox stolen An Xbox One was stolen from a residence in the 100 block of Colonial Parkway in Yorkville during a party overnight April 2, police reported.

Internet fraud A Yorkville resident told police that someone used his personal information without his permission to obtain a $500 loan through an Internet website Dec. 3. Police said the victim became aware of the fraud when contacted by a debt collection firm concerning the loan.

Cellphone stolen Someone entered a residence on Colonial

Parkway in Yorkville overnight March 29 and stole a cellphone while the owner was sleeping on the couch, Yorkville police reported.

Police said the front door of the residence had been left unlocked and no other items were taken.

Warrant arrest Yorkville police arrested Rayanne K. Curry, 19, of the 1400 block of Chestnut Lane, Yorkville, April 3 on a warrant for failing to appear in court on LaSalle County warrant for unlawful consumption of alcohol by a minor. One hurt in Rt. 47 crash A Yorkville resident, Panagiotis Konstantopoulos, 69, of the 4000 block of Plymouth Avenue was injured in a two-vehicle crash on Route 47 at Countryside Parkway Monday at 2:43 p.m., police reported.

Police said Konstantopoulus was transported to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora.

According to police, the accident occurred when Konstantopoulus’ vehicle, which was traveling southbound on Route 47 at Countryside Parkway disobeyed a red light and was struck in the driver’s side door by a vehicle being driven westbound on Countryside Parkway by Geneva Pedersen, 38, of the 300 block of Main Street, Yorkville.

The force of the impact caused Konstantopoulus’ vehicle to completely rollover, while Pedersen’s vehicle had severe front end damage and airbag deployment. Bristol-Kendall Fire Protection District firefighters extricated Konstantopoulus from his vehicle.

Pedersen and a passenger in her vehicle were not injured, according to police.

Police said Konstantopoulus was issued a citation for disobeying a traffic control device.

Yorkville High School to present spring musical ‘In the Heights’ KENDALL COUNTY RECORD Yorkville High School Theatre Program spring musical will be a production of Broadway’s “In The Heights” by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

The story is set over the course of three days and involves an ensemble cast of characters in the largely Dominican-American neighborhood of Washington Heights in New York City.

This production was nominated for 13 Tony Awards, winning four: Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Choreography and Best Orchestrations.

Performances are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, April 29 and 30, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 1 at 2 p.m.

Tickets will go on sale April 11. Ticket prices are $12 for adult and $10 for children/students/seniors.

District 90 kindergarten registration set KENDALL COUNTY RECORD Kindergarten registration for Lisbon Grade School District 90 will be held at the school on Friday, April 15 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the school library.

During registration, the incoming kindergarten students are invited to visit the current kindergarten classroom.

While their children are in class, parents will go to the library to pre-register the students for the fall session. At this time, registration and enrollment cards need to be completed. The recent terrorist bombing in Brussels, Belgium, prompted Jim Likeness, a Plano resident and Army veteran, to look through his vast photo collection. Likeness found this photo of himself at the 1958 World’s Fair in Brussels. Likeness said he was on a pass from the Army’s photography company when he and several fellow soldiers attended the fair. A 1957 Newark High School graduate, Likeness enlisted in the Army after graduation and served until 1960. He remembered the Belgian citizens as being friendly and supportive towards the U.S. troops.

Yorkville Christian High School gains full IHSA status

By CHRISTINE BOLIN DASCHER cbolin@kendallcountynow.com In February, Yorkville Christian High School received full recognition to be an IHSA member school from the Illinois State Board of Education.

The school was visited by a State Board compliance team in January and was given full recognition status.

When the school opened in September 2014, Yorkville Christian’s enrollment was 13. This year, there are 20 stu-

dents. Administrator/athletic director/ boys basketball coach Aaron Sovern is projecting an enrollment of 35 in 2016-17, but is hopeful that will be even larger with the new status. The Mustangs will compete in Class 1A. “We are small, but we have building plans on the horizon,” Sovern said.

Boys basketball is the lone sport to have a full team at Yorkville Christian.

Since gaining IHSA status, Sovern has wasted little time developing a competitive schedule for the Mustangs, includ-

ing Lisle’s Thanksgiving Tournament and the Plano Christmas Classic.

The Mustangs previously competed in the Illinois Christian Conference – a league with similar-sized, yet non-approved IHSA programs. They left the conference and will play as an independent next year because most schools’ schedules are already set for 2016-17.

“It’s definitely an exciting time,” Sovern said. “I contacted Jim Schmidt [Plano’s athletic director] and was hoping he’d keep us on the radar after a few

teams dropped out. The Plano Christmas Classic is a great tournament. [In 2015], some of our kids went and saw the environment and got really excited about it.”

Starting in 2016-17, wrestling and boys and girls cross country will be offered at Yorkville Christian. They are ideal sports for individuals at a small school that does not need a whole team to compete. Girls volleyball has also been offered, but there has not yet been enough interest to field a full team.

Yorkville’s most established judo club, the Yorkville Judo Club, had another stellar day at the Loras College Judo Tournament in Dubuque, Iowa on March 19.

Yorkville Judo sent four competitors to the event and brought home three gold medals and one bronze. Ian Kiilsgaard, age 10, Andrew Undesser, age 11, and Rick Undesser IV age 14, all won their divisions. Nate Perez, age 12, earned a bronze. Yorkville’s win totals for the event were outstanding, win-

ning nine of eleven matches, most by a sudden victory throw or pin. “These young men really represented our club well today. We have been working on applying our technique in competitive settings and they really showed that they are champions,� said Yorkville Sensei Rick Undesser.  The Yorkville Judo, in downtown Yorkville, is open to everyone ages six and up. Yorkville boasts largest team in program history

Yorkville’s overwhelming success in both cross country and track in recent years has created one problem for the Foxes this spring.

With over 170 athletes on the co-ed track and field roster, head coach Ben Draper was short a few uniforms – 60 shy, to be exact.

“I’m really excited that there are that many kids who are interested in this sport,” Draper said. “I can’t imagine there’s anyone else in the state with a larger co-ed program. I’m really impressed with our assistants, and they make my job a lot easier.”

The girls’ squad is the two-time defending Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference champion, and the Foxes return six state qualifiers and three more All-State cross country runners. The boys’ lineup includes Illinois Statebound thrower Sam Weisz – a school record holder in both shot put and discus and returning state qualifier.

Sydney Anderson is a returning state qualifier in high jump, with Schultz, Washburn, Piper Buyansky, Stephanie Schlichting and Lauren Daffenburg also returning state qualifiers.

Jasutis and Schultz recently teamed up with Alexis Grandys and newcomer Emily Eberhart to turn out a first-place finish in the 4x800-meter relay at the Illinois Top Times indoor championships.

The 4x200-meter relay of Schlichting, Beach, Washburn and Mischara Palmer also turned heads with a ninth-

place finish at the indoor championships.

Raigan Clark (sprints), Maddie Dearborn (distance), Haven Fed (sprints), Rachel Paver (sprints/hurdles), Jade Volkart (throws), Alainna Batres (hurdles/sprints), Alyssa Edwards (distance), Maggie Klemm (mid-distance) and Jessica Race (sprints) return, in addition to newcomers Amaya St. Romain (sprints), Olivia Borowiak (distance/pole vault) and Nicole Greyer (distance).

“The current juniors started a trend, and that really turned out team around. When I first took over the girls [in 2010], we were always at the bottom of the meets,” Draper said. “If we broke two minutes in the 4x2, we were really excited. Now, we’re running 1:48 indoors. That group has really turned the tide from us being focused on distance to being much more well-rounded.”

In the boys’ division, Yorkville will rely heavily on its field events to score points this spring. Behind Weisz, the Foxes return Jay Thompson, David Frazier and Lazerrick Jackson to the throwing events with Peyton Frankenreider (jumps/hurdles) and newcom-

ers Jeremy Larsen and Javen Williams (jumps) in the mix.

On the track, the state’s third-place cross country team will fill in the distance and mid-distance events with Jake Firrantello, Thor Hester, Cody Hornyak, Trevor Wills, Alexx Nauman, Patrick Black and Zack Price.

Sprinters include Gabe Arroyo, CJ Bell, Jake Eberhart, Brendan Zeinstra, Logan Sudduth, Jackson Torok and Cade Vallero, with Plainfield South transfer Elijah Hill (mid-distance/ sprints).

“We’re definitely going to be led by the youth – that’s just where our depth is,” Draper said. “The seniors who are back can definitely be leaders for us and these kids have seen the team when we were not very good and got a glimpse last year at sectionals where we had a successful meet; they understand what kind of team they want to be a part of.”

The Yorkville girls will enter their first outdoor invite on Friday at the Plainfield North Relays, while the boys travel to the Niles West Gans-Zeedyk Invite on Saturday. Yorkville will host its annual Matt Wulf Invite on April 15.

Yorkville fields junior-heavy lineup

By CHRISTINE BOLIN DASCHER cbolin@kendallcountynow.com In more than 20 years as the Yorkville boys’ tennis coach, Frank Yabsley has never had this many juniors fill the Foxes’ lineup.

Ten of 11 on the roster are juniors, and only three – Josh Tatum, Zach Miesuk and Alex Burks – are returning. Miesuk and Burks most likely will play in the top spot in doubles.

The lone sophomore is Eric Naumann, who saw some time at the varsity level last year, when the Foxes went 10-5 in duals and third at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference meet.

“I’ve never had anything like this,” said Yabsley, who graduated state-qualifier Austin Carney. “I’m very optimistic for the potential.

There is a lot of potential here – they just have to put the work in, and they know that.”

The newcomers are Chase Aulis, Antonio Bolanos, Rey Castro, Clay Elleby, Ethan Piszczek, Spencer Snyder and Jake Stemmet.

On Monday, the Foxes opened the season with a 5-2 loss to Minooka. At No. 1 singles, Naumann defeated his opponent 6-2, 6-4. At second singles, Tatum picked up a 6-2, 6-2 victory for the Foxes.

The Foxes (0-1) continue play this week against LaSalle-Peru and Rochelle. Yorkville will face Oswego East on April 13 and Oswego on May 9. It will also be a part of a quad at Plainfield North (April 23) and will host its own Doubles Tournament on April 29.

The conference tournament is scheduled for May 14.

The Newark track and field program opened its inaugural season last Thursday at Reaper Stadium in Plano.

The Norsemen competed in their first track events in more than 30 years, under the direction of Dr. Jeff Schutt, who will oversee the program with assistant coach Meghan McCoy. The Newark girls scored 51 points to take third in the six-team event behind Sandwich (132) and Plano (120) while finishing ahead of Hinckley-Big Rock (48), Crossroads (22) and Somonauk (11). The boys scored 30 points.

Rachel Testin was second in the shot put with a mark of 30-10 1/2, and was second in the discus with a throw of 89-8. Nikki Kala was third in the 400 with a time of 1:11, and placed third in the 200 with a time of 29.4. Evelyn Martin cleared 4-4 in the high jump to place second.

In the boys’ events, Newark had four top-three finishes. Billy Gebhart was second in the long jump with a distance of 20-4 1/2.

The 4x100-meter relay team of Connor Swanson, Tyler Mulligan, Mitch Schmidt and Gebhart turned in a third-place finish. Swanson was third in the 110-meter high hurdles (18.35) and Steve McGrath took third in the 200 with a time of 25.14 seconds.

Newark’s next meet will take place on April 12 at Sandwich at 4 p.m.

“I look forward to seeing the progress that all of these athletes will make as the year goes on,” Schutt said. “They do not have a track to train on, but instead they run on the streets of Newark and on grass when available. Many of these athletes are playing softball and baseball as well, which is an indication of their school pride and competitiveness.”

The Yorkville softball team dropped its last two non-conference contests against Plainfield North and Coal City. As a result, the Foxes are 4-3 overall entering this week of Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference action games against Kaneland, Sycamore and Geneseo.

“At this point, I am feeling good about our 4-3 record so far,” Yorkville coach Jory Regnier said. “The three games we have lost have helped our team improve and learn how to get better for the next game. We are still fine-tuning our starting lineup since we have had a few injuries.

“We face both Kaneland and Sycamore this week and are hoping we have made the right adjustments to come out with a couple wins.”

In the 3-1 loss to Plainfield North on March 29, Allyson Johnson had two hits. The Foxes struggled to hit, as the Tigers’ pitcher struck out 14 and allowed no walks.

“The pitcher from Plainfield North definitely had our number that day,” Regnier said. “Her command was spot on and she had a very well disguised change up. Defensively, we played a spectacular game and [pitcher] Allyson Johnson kept the Plainfield North hitters off-balance. Unfortunately, they had a few more timely hits that we did.”

On March 30, Coal City defeated Yorkville, 14-6, at the Dome at the Ballpark at Rosemont.

The Coalers scored five runs in the first inning and eight more in the third. Cameron Wicker hit a triple for the Foxes and Johnson posted four strikeouts in the loss on the mound.

“Playing at Rosemont was a really great experience for the team,” Regnier said. “It’s that big stage feel that few programs get to experience before the postseason. One of the biggest challenges we faced was that the field was slick from all of the rain and made footing difficult for any players [from both teams] who did not have cleats.”

Saturday’s outing hosting Plainfield Central was postponed due to the weather.

‘A GOOD TEAM WIN’ Yorkville baseball stays ahead of the game, tops Oswego East

By CHRISTINE BOLIN DASCHER cbolin@kendallcountynow.com There was no disappointment or let down from the Yorkville baseball team at Oswego East on Thursday.

The Foxes led early and never trailed, despite the Wolves being on their heels the entire game. Yorkville left Oswego with a 7-6 victory and improved to 5-3 this season. Oswego East fell to 2-3.

“I thought this was a good team win,” Yorkville coach Scott Luken said. “We put some pressure on them early with our base running and forced them into some errors that gave us some early runs. I think that built some confidence for our guys. I was also pleased late in the game with the defense from our infielders. I think if we play like this game in and game out, we are going to win a lot of games.”

“We battled all game and gave it our all,” Yorkville’s Jon Jungr added. “I like the way we played today.”

Yorkville’s three runs in the top of the first were all manufactured without an RBI. Oswego East responded with a run in the bottom of the inning via Vince Schwartz’ RBI double that allowed Garrett Goetz to score after he led off with a double.

“The kids played with a lot of resilience after the first inning,” Oswego East coach Matt Engelhardt said. “That first inning was rough. We came out of the gates with a lack of focus. I thought we out-played them in the last six innings after spotting them too many runs there in the first.”

The Foxes pushed ahead 4-1 in the top of the third on an RBI single from Taylor Irons, only to see the Wolves threaten again with two runs in the bottom of the inning on Schwartz’ first home run of the game. His two-run blast also scored Goetz, who hit his second of three doubles.

“It’s kind of been the story for us this season, getting down early in games,” Schwartz added. “We just have to keep fighting back, and I think we did a pretty good job of that today. We had chances, but we didn’t take advantage of them.”

After a scoreless fourth inning, the Foxes saw Jungr hit a two-run home run, which followed Cameron Van Boekel’s RBI double that sent Lucas Farren home. Yorkville led 7-3 going into the sixth inning.

Oswego East added two more runs in

the sixth with RBI from Mason Madalinski and Jake Leonard before Schwartz hit another home run in the seventh. His solo shot led off the inning, but a double play from Yorkville and a ground out from the Wolves ended the game.

The Wolves ended up out-hitting Yorkville, 13-8. Goetz ended up with four hits while Schwartz, the No. 3 batter, posted three.

Yorkville 10, Coal City 2: On March 30, the Foxes defeated Coal City, 10-2. Stephen Sewruk was the winning pitcher, Travis Voelker went 3-for-4, Jungr went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Max Warren posted two RBIs.
