By MATT SCHURY mschury@kendallcountynow.com Political newcomer Diane Selmer maintained her lead over incumbent Dan Koukol to win the Republican Party’s nomination for a seat on the Kendall County Board in District 2 after mail-in, absentee ballots were counted Tuesday night.

Selmer topped Koukol by just 15 votes after all absentee ballots were tabulated by the Kendall County Clerk’s Office and Aurora Election Commission.

The final unofficial results including all absentee ballots show Selmer with 3,081 votes to Koukol’s 3,066 votes.

Tuesday was the cutoff date for absentee ballots from the March 15 pri-

mary election to arrive in the mail to be counted.

It appeared late on election night that Koukol had won the nomination by 10 votes with all precincts reporting in Diane Selmer District 2, including precincts counted by the Kendall County Clerk’s Office and two of three precincts counted by the Aurora Election Commission.

However, once the third Aurora precinct’s results were reported the day after the election, Selmer pushed ahead of Koukol by the slim margin of 17 votes.

That lead narrowed to 15 on Tuesday afternoon after the Kendall County Clerk’s Office tabulated the final absentee ballots that came in the

mail.

The Aurora Election Commission finished counting mail-in votes later Tuesday night and posted the results on the agency’s website.

Dan Koukol District 2 has three open seats. Also winning the GOP nomination were Matthew Kellogg of NaAuSay Township and Tony Giles of Oswego.

The three will face Democrat incumbent Elizabeth Flowers and Kristine Heiman in the November general election.

Selmer is making her first bid for election to the county board. Last year she ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the Oswego Village Board.

Koukol has served on the board since 2010.

Duback named director of business services in Yorkville School District

By KATHY FARREN news@kendallcountynow.com Michael Duback, who has been the Yorkville School District assistant director of teaching and learning, will be the district’s director of business services next year.

Board of Education members hired him for the newly created position Monday night. The salary was set at $83,500 plus administrative benefits.

Under the proposed new administrative structure for the district, it is likely Duback’s current position would be eliminated.

Superintendent Tim Shimp originally proposed creating two directors of teaching and learning positions working under the direction of a new chief academic officer but board mem-

bers asked for revisions to that plan.

Shimp will present a new administrative structure plan to the board at their April 11 meeting.

In other personnel action Monday, the board hired Adam West, an assistant principal at Yorkville High School, for the new position of associate principal of student services at the school. His salary was set at $90,000 plus administrative benefits.

Matthew Rutherford was hired as a district computer technician and Brian Long as Yorkville Middle School assistant cross country coach. Long also resigned as YHS assistant volleyball coach.

Resignations were accepted from Sarah Eastham and Kevin Buss, YHS social studies teachers; Shawn Corwin, Yorkville Intermediate School physi-

cal education teacher; Ryan Schill and Anne Kuntz, YHS guidance counselors; Paisley Fort, YHS Spanish teacher; and Tyler Bantz, YHS math teacher.

Bantz also resigned as YHS golf coach and assistant boys’ basketball coach.

Shane Darnell was hired as principal of the Title I summer school program to be held at Yorkville Middle School while Steve Bjork will be the principal of the Jump Start summer school program. Also hired for the Jump Start program were Brandi Delaney, nurse, and administrative assistant Corina Thom.

Yorkville High School science teacher Harry Wolf’s plans to retire at the end of the 2018-19 school year were approved as was a leave of absence request from Linda Gengler, Yorkville Grade School principal’s secretary.

BRIEFS Jr. Women’s Club offering scholarship

The Yorkville Junior Women’s Club is now accepting applications for its annual scholarship. The scholarship is open to all high school seniors who are Yorkville residents.

Hartman said recyclers used to get payments from manufacturers to take the TVs. Those subsidies still are available, but they are based on the weight of the electronic items, he said. When recyclers hit a certain weight threshold, the manufacturers no longer have to subsidize the disposal of the TVs. “Once they paid for ‘X’ amount of pounds, their obligations are done,” Hartman said. “The whole bottom of this market has fallen through just within the last year. A lot of us saw it coming. It’s just one of those things that you say, ‘Well, maybe it won’t happen.’ Well, now it’s happening.’’

Howe adds that the weight threshold set for this year was hit in January.

“My guess would be that they just had so many [TVs] sitting around that when the year rolled over they were just not able to collect as many as they anticipated,” he said.

Yorkville police said Craddock’s northbound Nissan pickup truck was

stopped on Route 47 at Corneils Road when it was rear-ended by a northbound semitrailer driven by Michael D. Janes, 24, of the 200 block of West Ellen Avenue, Cortland.

The force of the collision spun Craddock’s vehicle around and it was struck on the passenger side by a Volkswagen Golf driven by Jakob Price, 19, of the 200 block of Walsh Circle, Yorkville.

Janes lost control of his semitrailer and it then struck a Ford pickup being driven southbound on Route 47 by Jarrott B. Schramm, 35, of Stonebridge Lane, St. Charles.

Schramm lost control of his vehicle and it overturned, landing on the roof.

Police said Janes’ semitrailer then proceeded 50 feet into a nearby field.

Police said Craddock sustained major injuries in the crash and was transported to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora by Bristol-Kendall Fire Protection District paramedics. Paramedics also took Price to Rush-Copley Medical Center, police said.

Janes was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, police said.

Old-model CRT (tube) TVs are posing a growing problem for public officials in Kendall County who say they are getting calls from frustrated residents who want to recycle them but can’t because recycling vendors have stopped taking the old sets.

To make matters still more complicated, state law prohibits TVs from being placed in the trash.

Aaron Howe, an administrative intern for the village of Oswego, said the old TVs will not be accepted at the village’s Recycling Extravaganza set for Saturday, April 23. The annual extravaganza is the largest recycling event in the county.

Referring to the problem of recycling the old TVs, Howe said, “It’s really challenging for the village, it’s something that we get a lot of calls about and we are definitely interested in providing that service, we just have to find a way. From the village’s perspective we have residents looking for it, but we don’t recycle the televisions as a municipality. It’s kind of out of our control. We have to find a vendor that is able to do it at a reasonable cost.”

In 2012 Illinois banned tube TVs from being placed in landfills. Marlin Hartman, Kendall County’s solid waste coordinator, said the new television market then changed as high definition, flat-screen TVs dropped in price and became popular.

Best Buy stores used to take old TVs for a fee, according to their website. However, the retailer has stopped accepting the TVs since it is prohibited under Illinois law from charging a fee. Thrift shops also won’t take tube TVs. Goodwill’s website indicates it no longer accepts tube TVs and Caring Hands Thrift Shop in Yorkville also doesn’t take them.

a responsibility for the old TVs. “The manufacturers say the end-of-life responsibility is for the consumer who purchased it and most environmentalists are saying the typical individual doesn’t have the resources to do that. You [the manufacturer] know now to demanufacture it better than somebody else,” Hartman said.

Since vendors stopped taking the old TVs, some people began dumping them off on the side of the road, as well as at municipal sites that once took them. Hartman says he’s seen the TVs on the side of the road and he used to pick them up and take them to a recycler in Will County that since has stopped accepting them.

Hartman says recyclers used to take the TVs and reuse the glass. In fact, he said e-waste recycling was a booming industry for a while. Now, with flat-screen TVs being popular, the glass, which contains lead, is no longer in demand. In order to be repurposed, the lead has to be removed from the glass.

“There are very few smelters that can separate that lead from the glass,” Hartman said.

Tube TVs were banned from landfills because of concerns about the lead leaking into the ground, said Aaron Rybski, environmental health services director for Kendall County.

“There is a lot of lead in these tube TVs and it’s just a lot of nasty stuff that they ultimately have to dispose of. It’s getting rough. There have been a lot of businesses that have been closing down and the landscape is changing.”

Hartman adds that as long as you don’t break the TV up, they can sit in a closet or basement without any health concerns.

“If you break the tube then you’ve got a problem,” he said.

Local lawmakers should lead on TV recycling A 2012 state law banned old tube TVs from landfills and most electronics stores, waste haulers and recyclers are no longer accepting them. That leaves consumers in Kendall County and across the state in the lurch when they want to get rid of their old TVs. That a growing number of residents are frustrated by their lack of disposal options and taking matters into their own hands is obvious if you drive along any of the county’s rural highways. Look closely and you’re likely to see old Sonys, Samsungs, Panasonics and more tossed from passing cars and trucks into the adjoining ditches.

Last year, the General Assembly attempted to fix the recycling problem

by passing a law, HB1455, which was intended to get recycling centers to take old TVs and other electronics again by increasing the amount that manufacturers must recycle or reuse on an annual basis. But when Gov. Bruce Rauner signed HB1455 last July, officials with his office and the bill’s sponsor, State Rep. Emily McAsey, D-Lockport, acknowledged the legislation was only a temporary fix and further legislation is needed.

Catherine Kelly, spokeswoman for the governor’s office, told the Joliet Herald-News that the state’s prior electronics recycling law was “out of date and putting an undue burden” on local governments. Referring to

HB1455, Kelly said, “This bill gives local governments, manufacturers and stakeholders time to develop new regulations for electronics recycling.”

Based on what we’re seeing here in Kendall County, HB1455 has come up short – even as a temporary remedy to the recycling problem. County residents still don’t have a lawful, viable way to dispose of old TVs. More action needs to be taken and we would like to see one or more of the county’s four state representatives and three state senators come forward to take a leadership role in the crafting of further legislation that will provide a long-term remedy to the recycling dilemma. If nothing else, passage of

HB1455 last year proved recycling is one issue that both Democrats and Republicans can agree on in Springfield.

As the governor and Democratic leaders remain at odds over a new state budget and their minions in the House and Senate wring their collective hands, there is nothing to prevent State Reps. Keith Wheeler, R-Oswego; Mark Batinick, R-Plainfield; Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego; State Sen. Linda Holmes, D-Aurora; State Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove; State Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris; or State Sen. Jennifer Bertino Tarrant, D-Plainfield, from taking positive action either individually or collectively to resolve what has become a recycling crisis.

Spring: a time to separate junk mail from seed catalogs So here we are living through the fifth Thursday of March, and looking forward to April Fool’s Day. As this whole global climate change thing accelerates, it’s hard for us here in Northern Illinois to tell whether weather is getting any crazier than usual, since crazy weather is pretty much the norm around these parts.

The good news, of course, is that it’s officially spring and has been for a couple of weeks now. The bad news is that Mother Nature is a well-known practical joker, which means don’t put that snow shovel away just yet. Soon, but not now – trust me on this.

Me, I’m enjoying trips out to the mailbox to empty out all the seed and gardening catalogs, which, in my opinion, are even better harbingers of spring than robins and daffodils. The trick is to separate the seed catalog wheat from the junk mail chaff. But even the chaff has some interesting things to say. And so, with little further ado, here are a bunch of things I might never have found out if I hadn’t opened all the junk mail that showed up in the mailbox out in front of the Matile Manse every day the mail carrier made his (or her) appointed rounds: Along with Women’s History Month, March is also National Flour Month, so you’ve got just one more day to celebrate.

FORUM To the Editor: The greatest love story ever told is amazingly simple yet powerful. For centuries mankind has lived out the truth in the message of the story and risked their lives to bring that truth to all the nations of the world.

Jesus, God’s messenger, declared He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Wherever the message was received and believed, mankind experienced greater freedom from hopelessness and fear.

They found meaningful missions of compassion and duty to their fellow man as they extended God’s love to others. This simple yet profound message can be summarized in a few short paragraphs.

Trump: lots of sizzle, but...

To the Editor: It’s amusing reading or listening to people defend why Donald Trump should be president. He is speaking his mind. He will make America great again. He is a true American. Lots of sizzle, not much substance.

How many companies hire a CEO with no prior experience to run their operation? Would Trump hire a personality with no real estate knowledge to run his empire? That’s essentially what people are buying into. Trump has experience getting celebrities to do things for him. Do we really want Gary Busey negotiating trade deals?

The Republican leadership thought he would amuse for a while and then just take his show elsewhere, but he surprised them.

Even though he, and his early supporters like Sarah Palin, castigate the “lame stream press”, it is the press who keeps Trump’s star burning bright.

He has been shown to get twice the free press coverage as that of his nearest opponent, both Republican or Democrat. We saw this when the press showed his empty podium for hours on Super Tuesday, while other candidates came on stage to speak and were ignored. He will be the first candidate to run his entire campaign on Twitter. His policies are not keeping people riveted, unlike Sanders, whose policies are both praised and criticized.

He is theater and his decades of being in front of cameras will keep him front

and center, much to the dismay of the party. His name at the top of the ticket will be felt all the way down to local elections for road commissioner.

If you are a Republican, many polls show more negative than positive for Mr. Trump. That may mean people stay home because no one votes in a Presidential election and not votes for the President but then casts votes for other candidates on the ticket. When political operatives criticized candidate Obama, in 2008, for his Chicagostyle politics, they are in for a treat when Trump shows up in Cleveland this summer and sees his delegates picked off with backroom deals. There are political wonks just pouring over election rules at the state and local levels looking to trip up Mr. Trump.

His inexperience with the fine print of primary politics will be his downfall.

Will Trump, in his defiant style, haul the Republican Party into court to get his nomination? He does seem to like to sue people. I guess the electorate will find out that a vote cast for your guy is not a vote cast at all.

To the Editor: I am currently retired. I spent 37 years with a medical device company.

I had the opportunity to travel the world. One of those trips took me to Cuba. It was an exciting endeavor indeed. I was attending a medical

meeting organized by my associates in France, who supplied me with the necessary credentials required 15 years ago.

My colleagues and I were treated to a tour of Havana before driving east, down the coast to our resort, built by the French. All the political monuments were neat, clean and large. The rest of the city was a mess. Crumbling infrastructure everywhere, and I mean everywhere. The place hasn’t seen any updates in generations. It is sad indeed and I understand why the Cuban people crave an end to our embargo.

Canada, France, Germany and all the other countries that permit travel to Cuba have done little to improve life just south of Florida.

Should we continue the embargo? No, there is nothing to prove any longer.

Russia won’t aid Cuba to any extent any longer. Venezuela is broke and cannot help their socialist paradise.

Lift the embargo, let us buy cigars and reunite families. Fifty-plus years is enough.

Cause for concern

To the Editor: There should be a serious cause for concern on Eldamain Road. There have been two instances this week where people’s impatience has resulted in poor decision-making while driving.

Not only putting themselves in a more dangerous spot, but also putting others around them in one, too.

Both instances occurred between the YMCA and Galena Road, and both involved vehicles making illegal passes (and speeds in excess of 80 mph) either on the shoulder or by utilizing the turn lanes at Eldamain and Galena. And this isn’t the first week I have noticed this; it’s continued to occur since the completion of Eldamain.

Impatience clouds these people’s minds, and even when vehicles are traveling at 50 mph (in a 45 mph zone), these people still find that inexcusable. If those people who did this on Monday, March 21, and Friday, March 25, are reading this, perhaps you’ll give more regard to everyone else around you and utilize the legal methods for passing on Galena Road or Ashe Road instead.

Sheriff seeks info on damage in Silver Springs area Five reports taken of damage to parked cars, government building

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com YORKVILLE – The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office is seeking information about a string of criminal property damage incidents along the Fox River in Yorkville.

The sheriff’s office has recorded five separate reports of damage that appears to have occurred between 5 p.m.

Friday, March 25, and 9 a.m. Monday, March 28.

Two of the reports were taken for damage to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources building at 5931 Fox River Drive in Silver Springs State Park.

Three reports were taken in relation to vehicles damaged down the street in the parking lot of Cedar Ridge Campground, at 6125 Fox River Drive.

Deputy Mike Mrozek said windows were damaged in each instance.

“The windows had enough damage to where it would appear it was from BB guns,” Mrozek said.

Eastbound traffic on Galena Road often backs up to Concord Drive on weekday mornings, according to Fran Klaas, Kendall County engineer. The Kendall County Board voted unanimously March 16 to accept a bid totaling $505,101 from Geneva Construction of North Aurora to make improvements to two busy intersections along Orchard Road in Montgomery.

Fran Klaas, the county’s highway engineer, told the board that most of the work will take place at the Orchard Road and Caterpillar Drive intersection, where crosswalks and push button signals for pedestrians will be installed.

The crosswalks and signals are expected to make it easier and safer for pedestrians from subdivisions located west of Orchard Road to reach stores along the east side of the road, according to Klaas. Currently there are no crosswalks at the intersection.

At Orchard and Galena roads, Klaas said contractors will make modifications to the traffic signals and turn lanes.

He noted eastbound traffic on Galena Road in the morning often gets backed up at the Orchard Road intersection.

“We are going to put dual left [turns] for that movement because in the morning that [traffic] stacks up for a quarter mile [on Galena Road]. It backs all the way up to Concord Drive intersection

Klaas said he expects crews to start “moving dirt” in April. ComEd is currently relocating its utility poles in the area. The project should be completed

by Halloween if it stays on schedule.

Board member Dan Koukol said the price for the work came in $2 million under the engineer’s expected cost.

“The good news is that yes, it was 30 percent under the engineer’s estimate or about $2 million. The bad news is it was still $1.5 million more than what we programmed in the five-year plan,” Klaas said.

“But there’s even more good because we got $3.5 million through KKCOM [Kane Kendall Council of Mayors] this year for Eldamain projects and we still have a net $2 million to the good in our five-year plan, so that will make things work much better,” he said.

Klaas’ department will be updating the county’s five-year highway plan this summer and will reprogram all those extra dollars. He said most likely they will be used for the Eldamain Road extension from River Road to Route 34.

The engineer’s estimate on that project is close to $8 million.

“That’s far more than anyone dreamed it would be when we started going through this,” Klaas said.

YORKVILLE SCHOOL DISTRICT

Yorkville Board of Education members approved two agreements Monday: one that will allow the district to share special education services and another to purchase guidance counseling software.

The intergovernmental agreement for special education is between the Yorkville School District and the new Plano Area Special Education Cooperative (PASEC) which will include Plano, Newark High School, Newark Grade School and Lisbon Grade School

Districts. That cooperative will go into effect after the Kendall County Special Education Cooperative is dissolved June 30.

Terms of the agreement will allow Yorkville special education students from ages 18 to 21 to take part in a Transition Program offered in Plano.

In return, PASEC students will be able to attend emotional disability, Life Skills and autism programs in the Yorkville School District.

Yorkville and PASEC will pay tuition for students in programs out of their district.

YORKVILLE POLICE REPORTS Arrest 2 in parking lot fight Yorkville Police arrested two Plano men on charges of battery and disorderly conduct in the parking lot of a business in the 1200 block of North Bridge Street (Ill. Route 47) March 23 at 2:50 p.m.

Police identified the suspects as Kyle Molkentine, age not given, of the 700 block of East North Street; and Alex Martinez, age not given, of the 700 block of Church Street.

Police said Molkentine struck Martinez in the face after Martinez had pulled a knife on him. The two suspects then proceeded to exchange punches on the ground.

Police said there were several witness to the incident.

Martinez was transported to an area hospital for treatment of a cut he sustained on his finger in the incident. Molkentine signed a medical release at the scene and was taken into custody. Police said he later was released on bond.

DUI arrest after crash An Aurora resident, Holly Svoboda, 25, of the 2000 block of Creekside Court, was injured March 27 at 4:59 p.m. when the vehicle she was driving eastbound on Galena Road approximately one-half mile west of Route 47 crossed over the westbound lane, drove off the roadway and into a ditch, Yorkville police reported.

Aggravated DUI arrest County sheriff’s deputies arrested Aaron Ray Lage, 30, of the 4400 block of Little Rock Road, Plano, after the vehicle he was driving was involved in a rollover crash March 27 at 4:30 a.m. on Sandy Bluff Road at Rogers Road.

Police said Lage walked away on foot from the accident scene to a residence in the 16000 block of Rogers Road, Sandwich, where he entered another vehicle and drove back to a party that he had attended earlier in the evening. A family member then brought Lage to an area hospital.

Man given 2nd jail term in multi-county crime spree SHAW MEDIA A Plano man has been sentenced to prison for trying to kill a man he robbed five years ago as part of a multi-county crime spree that ended with a murder in LaSalle County.

Luis A. Lomeli, 40, of the 12800 block of Route 34, Plano, and formerly of Aurora, was sentenced March 23 by Circuit

Judge James C. Hallock to 22 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Lomeli was convicted Feb. 4 by a Kane County jury of attempted first-degree murder, a Class X felony, armed violence, a Class X felony, and armed robbery, a Class X felony.

The 22-year sentence is to be served consecutive to the 45-year sentence Lomeli received for a first-degree murder

conviction in LaSalle County.

According to Illinois law, Lomeli must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence. He receives credit for 989 days served in the Kane County jail.

“Mr. Lomeli’s crimes were violent, unprovoked and random. He committed these crimes because he chose to place more importance on taking drugs than he did in the lives of other

people. His poor choices and the ruined lives he left in the wake of these choices mean he most likely will spend the rest of his life in prison, a predictable outcome,” Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said in a statement issued by the state’s attorney’s office.

Kane County Assistant State’s Attorneys Bill Engerman, Sal LoPiccolo and Dan Weiler prosecuted the case.

Golf cart stolen County sheriff’s deputies are investigating the theft of a Club Car golf cart from a residence in the 2400 block of Bristol Ridge Road in Bristol. Yorkville alum earns conference Player of the Week

KENDALL COUNTY RECORD The Yorkville Middle School eighth-grade girls basketball team finished undefeated with a 15-0 record, and the A team ended their season by winning the Fox River Prairie Conference tournament championship. This gives the group an overall 7th- and 8th-grade career record of 31-3.

The B team finished with a record of 12-2. This put them at an overall 25-2 record for their 7th- and 8th-grade career. The B Team won second place in the annual YMS B Tournament and also wrapped up the season by winning the Fox River Prairie Conference championship tournament.

This year’s roster included Lexi Sandon, Michaela Hunt, Halle Jones, Olivia Ross, Sam Moreno, Ashley Berry, Rachel Hunter, Natalie Ferrer, Ava Hanson, Liliana Guerra, Lexi Meyer, Kyleigh Hudson, Reyna Cruz, Amber McManus, Haley Chavarria, and Avery Pottinger.

The team was coached by Kimberly Martin and Joyce Yattoni.

Yorkville’s Knauf wins Scholastic National Judo Championship KENDALL COUNTY RECORD

Alex Knauf, 14 of Yorkville, recently competed in the Scholastic National Judo Championships in Dallas, Texas. This is a top nation-

al tournament drawing athletes from across the United States.

Knauf went 4-0 and won the national title.

He was not scored on in any of his matches. This was his 10th

USA Judo National Championship title. He trains with his father, Dennis Knauf, at Illinois Elite Judo Training Center in Yorkville and at Tohkon Judo Academy in Chicago.

Yorkville alum Rachael Owens of the Otterbein University softball team received an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) “Player of the Week” honor along with teammate Tory Speakman (Westerville), announced by the league office on Monday.

The Cardinals posted a 4-0 record this past week, sweeping Ohio Wesleyan and Muskingum on Saturday, thanks in part to two wins in the circle for Owens.

Owens, a sophomore from Yorkville, collected her second OAC “Pitcher of the Week” award of the season after going 2-0 with a 1.93 earned run average in two complete games.

She combined in 14 innings to strikeout six batters, allowing only three earned runs and walking just one batter.

Otterbein is now 15-2-1 overall and hosts its first OAC home game of the season in a twin bill against Baldwin Wallace on Saturday.

Newark wins final spring break game in Jacksonville

The Newark baseball team saved the best for last to complete its spring break road trip to Jacksonville.

The Norsemen lost their first three games of the trip, only to redeem themselves with a 9-2 win over Milford on the last day of play on Saturday. Newark is now 1-3 this season with upcoming games against Marquette Academy and Westmont.

Senior Kevin Klock posted three hits, two RBIs, senior Ian Cerney added three RBIs and senior Kendall Endres was the winning pitcher after he struck out seven, walked two and gave up two hits in the complete game.

“Great way to end the trip,” Newark coach JR Veliz said. “Kendall pitched great and had command all day. The boys hit well up and down the lineup.

The trip was so much fun and it was a great experience for everyone.”

In the first game last Thursday, Hampshire topped Newark, 7-1. Steve

McGrath scored the lone run on a solo home run.

“Lots of positives were taken from this first game,” Veliz said. “Starting off the season against a [Class] 3A school was a tough task, but I was impressed at how we did.”

Last Friday, Winnebago defeated Newark, 10-4. McGrath and Austin Pagel each had two hits and Endres led the way in RBIs with two.

“Some of our young guys made mistakes in the field, but that’s going to happen,” Veliz said. “We are further ahead as a team than we were at this point last year for sure.”

In the second game last Friday, El Paso-Gridley beat Newark, 8-6. Senior Mitch Schmidt, Pagel and Ty Mulligan each posted an RBI while Schmidt led the way with two hits.

“We started off strong, going into the fourth with a 4-0 lead,” Veliz said.

“They got some base runners, timely hits and took advantage of a couple of mistakes we made. Before we knew it, they [scored eight runs].”

PREP ROUNDUP

Yorkville softball squad defeats Plano KENDALL COUNTY RECORD Freshman Calli Bishop posted a two-run walk-off home run for the Yorkville softball team, which defeated Plano, 8-6, in the come-from-behind victory that moved the Foxes to 4-1 this season. Plano led 4-1 after one inning and 6-2 after six before Yorkville posted six runs in the bottom of the seventh.

The Foxes (4-1 overall) finished with 10 hits and were led by Bishop (three RBIs, two hits) and Dani Pozeg (two

hits, two RBIs). The winning pitcher was Lauren Howard, who finished with 10 strikeouts and three walks.

BASEBALL

Yorkville sophomore: The Yorkville sophomore team (0-2-1 overall) fell to Oswego. 6-1. Matt Ramey pitched five strong innings in the loss giving up no earned runs. Ramey also only allowed one hit. Luke Williams singled and later scored the Foxes’ only run on a Grant Weiland hit.

Kevin Gruhlke Kevin Gruhlke plans to major in aerospace engineering at North Central College or the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign. A Yorkville High School senior, he is a candidate for the 2016 Student of the Year scholarship award. A total of 25 YHS seniors, selected by a panel of faculty members and a junior Student Council representative, will be recognized throughout the school year in the Record. Seniors applied for consideration as a Student of the Week through the high school guidance office. Co-sponsored by First National Bank and the Kendall County Record, the $4,000 Student of the Year scholarship will provide $1,000 each year for four years to the college of the recipient’s choice. The 2016 Student of the Year will be announced in May. A panel of community leaders will choose the finalists and the winner based on their transcripts, applications and an interview. Nomination and the final selection will be based on scholastic achievement, involvement in school and community, leadership and responsibility, ambition and citizenship. He participated in Scholastic Bowl all four years and in the High School Star League for a year. He has been a trained National Weather Service weather spotter for 11 years. Kevin has worked as a corn detasseler, and held jobs at Dairy Queen and as a produce clerk at Jewel-Osco.

The Yorkville track and field program completed a successful indoor season with a strong performance at the Illinois Top Times meet last Saturday at the Shirk Center in Bloomington.

The Foxes qualified 13 athletes in eight events, and the girls’ 4x800-meter relay team celebrated a first-place finish, clocking in a time of 9:26.92 behind the efforts of Becca Jasutis, Julia Schultz, Alexis Grandys and Emily Eberhart.

In the field events, Sydney Anderson placed fourth, clearing 5-6 for the second-best height of the day. Three other athletes tied at 5-7.

Yorkville had three entries in the 1,600-meter event, with Nicole Greyer

placing ninth (5:07), Grandys 14th (5:25) and Eberhart 15th (5:28).

In the 3,200, Summer Pierson was seventh (11:01) and Alyssa Edwards 15th (11:34).

Yorkville’s 4x200-meter relay team of Stephanie Schlichting, Mischara Palmer, Sydney Beach and Louisa Washburn bettered their 15th seed to take ninth with a time of 1:48.63.

The 4x400-meter relay of Schlichting, Schultz, Jasutis and Washburn finished eighth in 4:08.58.

Washburn also qualified in pole vault, but did not mark a height last weekend.

In the boys’ event, Sam Weisz upheld his fourth seed in the shot put, finishing with a mark of 55-6 3/4.

Yorkville will open the outdoor season on April 5, hosting DeKalb at Campbell Field at 4:30 p.m.

Coach hopes young squad will mature, learn from their mistakes

By CHRISTINE BOLIN DASCHER cbolin@kendallcountynow.com In the Yorkville baseball team’s first game since its spring break trip to Tennessee, the Foxes fell to Minooka 10-0 in six innings in non-conference action on Tuesday.

Yorkville is now 3-3 overall going into games against Coal City, Oswego East and Sandwich this week. The Foxes went 3-1 at the L.H. Ladd Baseball Classic, so they felt pretty good returning back to action in Illinois.

Minooka, expected to contend for the Southwest Prairie Conference title this spring, saw its top four hitters produce 10 of its 12 total hits. That included four in the bottom of the first, when the Indians scored three runs.

They went on to add two more in the second for a 5-0 advantage heading into the third inning.

“Year in and year out, Minooka has a very solid program, and no doubt, they have a really good team this year,” Yorkville coach Scott Luken said. “But I don’t think we played up to our capabilities. The season is young, and we are going to get better. We have a young lineup. We only had two seniors on the field and we played four sophomores today. We are hoping to mature as the season goes on and learn from our mistakes.”

“They are a good team, but obviously, we didn’t play our best,” Yorkville senior Cameron Van Boekel added. “I didn’t think we were mentally ready.

We came out flat and it went downhill from there. It’s a good measuring tool to motivate us to work harder to get better.”

After three scoreless innings, Minooka ended the game early with five runs in the bottom of the sixth on three hits. Yorkville’s only two base runners were on singles Mark Sommers (top of the fourth) and Jon Jungr (with two outs in the fifth).

Van Boekel, Yorkville’s starter, took the tough loss after he gave up seven hits, no walks and three strikeouts.

“With the exception of that first inning, I was pleased with how he did and composed himself,” Luken said of Van Boekel.

With the score tied and two outs and the bases loaded, Van Boekel hit a walk-off single that scored pinch hitter Michael Wojcik for the winning run.

Reifsteck earned his first varsity win on the mound in relief.
