By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Kendall County Coroner Jacquie Purcell told the County Board that she’s requested the badges of former deputy coroners, and introduced her new chief deputy coroner.

Purcell introduced Samantha Marshall, her new chief deputy coroner, to the board at the Dec. 20 meeting.

Marshall is a paramedic from Grundy County, Purcell said.

Marshall said she has been a paramedic with the Coal City Fire Protection District for the past seven years.

She said she has also been a paramedic preceptor for Morris Hospital and a deputy coroner with Grundy County Coroner’s Office, and has also been a

Purcell said she sent out 18 letters to former deputy coroners requesting the return of their coroner badges and other property.

She said she has received five badges back so far.

“So far everything has been running well, and we’re moving forward,” Purcell said.

According to an annual report presented to the board, the coroner’s office saw 284 total deaths during the past fiscal year, which ran from Dec. 1, 2015, to Nov. 30 of this year.

Of those deaths, 254 were marked as natural, 19 as accidental, 10 as suicide and one as homicide. Purcell said most of the accidental deaths were drug overdoses.

Suicide prevention training program coming to Yorkville Middle School KENDALL COUNTY RECORD Free suicide prevention training will be offered to Yorkville School District 115 parents and staff at a program at 7 p.m. Jan. 26 in the Yorkville Middle School auditorium.

This presentation will cover important risk factors and warning signs for suicide, as well as how parents can talk to their children about this often difficult topic and where to find help when needed.

Presenter Katie Baker, LCPC, is a licensed clinical professional counselor and director at Elyssa’s Mission. She has extensive experience in suicide

prevention education.

Suicide is the second-leading cause of death for young people ages 10-34.

For the first time, more middle school students ages 10-14 are dying by suicide than by automobile accidents.

The suicide rates for girls in this age range have tripled since 1999.

Elyssa’s Mission provides resources to help prevent teen suicide.

The community-based organization was founded in 2006 in honor of Elyssa, a bright, gifted and outgoing Chicago-area girl who bravely battled post-traumatic stress disorder and depression.

on support to area public and private schools and community organizations in order to educate students, staff and parents on how to recognize and assist those teens most at-risk.

dance. She was forced to stand because Anthony was “basically dragging her,” according to the state records.

She told him to get away from her but he continued to dance with her, noting that her blouse appeared to be falling off, the report said.

Another woman said he came up to her from behind when she was sitting in a chair and put his arms around her and around her breast. When he did let go, he brushed against her breast.

She said she didn’t know if it was intentional, but that it was “uncomfortable,” the report said.

Guests at the party said Anthony “acted intoxicated,” although they did not see him with a drink in his hand all night.

The Corrections Department on Friday said an investigation was launched and “immediate action” was taken as soon as they learned of the allegations of misconduct.

In a statement, the governor’s office applauded the Corrections Department for the quick action.

“Our administration does not tolerate this type of behavior,” spokeswoman Catherine Kelly said. “The Department of Corrections did the right thing by taking immediate action.”

Anthony could not be reached for comment on Friday afternoon.

Anthony, who was appointed to the position of state representative in 2013, announced his resignation from office June 17 of this year for the $120,000-a-year state job. Records show he made just more than $82,000 this year for his work at both the Department of Corrections and as a state representative.

Former 75th District State Rep. John Anthony was fired Dec. 7 from his position at the Illinois Department of Corrections after allegations emerged from several women who told investigators that Anthony had been saying inappropriate things and touching women at a party.

According to a redacted investigation memorandum dated Dec. 16, a report from a Department of Juvenile Justice employee alleges she was approached by a man wearing a Cubs jacket, who was later identified as Anthony, as she was going outside to smoke.

According to the report, the employee stated that the man made comments about her chest and buttocks.

The report reflects the male then stepped to the side of the employee and inappropriately pressed his crotch into her left thigh and licked her neck.

The report further states she asked who he was and he said “John.” When she asked for his last name, he said that didn’t matter.

The report also states that, based upon statements from alleged victims who reported that they were not actually assaulted, no statutory offenses could be cited in the investigation.

Another report stated “while on the dance floor, ANTHONY [sic] was try-

ing to ‘squeeze’ in on people dancing and trying to ‘grind’ on people.”

Anthony was assistant to the director of the Illinois Department of Corrections, where he was making $10,000 a month after leaving his position as a state representative.

The 75th District that Anthony served as a state representative encompasses most of Kendall County, including sections of Oswego, Plano, Yorkville, Plainfield and Joliet.

Nicole Wilson, media relations with the John Illinois Department of Anthony Corrections, confirmed previously by email that “John Anthony’s employment with the Illinois Department of Corrections ended Wednesday, December 7th.”

The reports also say Anthony has not responded to requests for an interview from investigators.

“The IDOC does not discuss personnel matters and cannot provide any further information,” Wilson said in the email.

On Friday, she said in an email, “As soon as we learned of these allegations of misconduct, we launched an investigation and took immediate action.”

The Corrections Department on Friday released records to Shaw Media after a Freedom of Information re-

quest was filed seeking information about Anthony’s firing, which also included a surveillance video.

Anthony was fired just five days after the Illinois Department of Corrections holiday party at the Wyndham Hotel in Springfield.

In one instance, which was caught on a surveillance tape, an Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice employee told investigators she was walking to an exit to go smoke when she was approached by Anthony, who put his arm around her and asked if she was a Corrections employee.

He then allegedly made the comments about her chest and buttocks.

Eventually, she asked him to leave her alone. That interaction was caught on surveillance video that was subpoenaed by the Corrections Department for its investigation.

“I am not be the only woman this happened to, unfortunately,” the woman wrote in an incident report.

That wasn’t the only reported instance of inappropriate touching that night, according to the records.

Several other women at the party told investigators that Anthony had been inappropriately commenting to and touching them as well.

The behavior warranted a talk by another state employee during the party. That discussion happened after a woman reported Anthony had touched her breasts.

Anthony then reportedly stated “he had done nothing wrong” and said he was a former state representative and “knew better.”

A hopeful sign for the coming new year Over the past few weeks we’ve published some amazing stories concerning the continuing generosity of Kendall County area residents leading up to the Christmas holiday. We hope you didn’t miss them but just in case, here are just a few highlights from those stories: In the Oswego-Montgomery area, School District 308 junior high school students, Oswego Fire Protection District firefighters and the Oswegoland Optimist Club secured the donation

of a record 7,500 toys, which were distributed by Optimist Club members and volunteers to homes with needy children within the school district.

In Yorkville, the Junior Women’s Club provided Christmas gifts to 1,200 children through this year’s Operation Santa, held for the first time at the Kendall County Community Food Pantry on Beaver Street. This year marks the 25th year the club has collected gift donations for local children in need.

Over in Plano, the Chamber of

Commerce organized more than 50 volunteers to assemble and deliver boxes of food to more than 300 city families for the holidays through the chamber’s Plano’s Rockin’ Christmas event, and in Sandwich the Franklin Mall Project, under the direction of the Sandwich Lions Club, provided groceries and gift cards for an estimated 250 local families in need, just in time for the holidays.

While it was heartening to read of the dedication of the many volunteers

who put on these and other programs, it was also sobering to learn of the large and apparently growing number of Kendall County area adults who struggle daily just to pay their bills and put food on the table for themselves and their children.

Still, the hundreds of county residents who stepped up and generously offered their time and talents at this most busy time of year to help those less fortunate is indeed a very hopeful sign as we enter the new year.

Ready to welcome the new year with pickled herring REFLECTIONS Roger Matile Christmas has run its course and Hanukkah is well underway. Now we can gird our loins in preparation to survive New Year’s Eve and all of those New Year’s Day bowl games.

The Matile manse has laid in adequate, we believe, provisions necessary for the coming of the 2017 New Year, including a couple of buckets of pickled herring, which everyone knows you have to eat the first thing in the New Year to assure good luck for the rest of the year.

We have heard that some area residents have taken to eating squid for good luck, but food with more than four legs, especially when those legs have suckers on them, is not part of the Matile lifestyle. We saw some squid in a grocery store once, and we couldn’t help but get visions of Kirk Douglas fighting for his life wrestling the giant squid in “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.” Eating such a food item, could, we suppose, be termed poetic justice given the tussle the squid gave Captain Nemo (which backwards spells “omen”), but we’re not into poetic justice when it comes to food. And we like to stay away from omens altogether as a general rule.

Instead, late on Christmas Day, after the Bears’ game with that team from the District of Columbia that can’t figure out whether or not its name is a racial epithet, we turned to the gigantic pile of junk mail we had accumulated over the past month

There were, of course, no recipes of value there (or it wouldn’t be junk mail, would it?). But we did uncover a batch of facts that would normally be useless, but which we found just right to fill up the 1,000 words that make up an average week’s “Reflections.” So, with no further ado, here are a number of things we never would have found out if we hadn’t stuck a silage fork into our accumulated stack of junk mail to see what would turn up: If you got one of those really cool Cutty Sark or USS Constitution ship

models for Christmas, you’ll be happy to learn that January is National Hobby Month.

Has Jack Frost been nipping at your nose? Jack Frost’s story began as an icicle sprite, who probably originated in Scandinavia. In Norse mythology, the god of the winds had a son named Jokul (icicle) Frosti (frost).

Cool, heh?

Turns out the story of Robinson Crusoe was history’s first docudrama.

Daniel Defoe got the idea for the tale when he heard the story of Alexander Selkirk, who quarreled with his ship’s captain and was marooned on

a remote island for 52 months until a passing ship rescued him, presumably in a somewhat less combative mood.

A lot of folks contend it’s really hard to find a truly funny conservative comedian. And, frankly, they’ve got a point. But that doesn’t mean conservatives never took a stab at a sense of humor. The first real newspaper cartoons appeared in The Federal Republican, a conservative Washington, D.C., sheet, in 1814.

In fact, manners and etiquette have been unsuccessfully distributed to the impolite for centuries. What’s the difference between a marsh and a swamp, we bet you want to know. Well, we’re glad you asked.

Both are wetlands but a swamp has trees; a marsh does not.

Ladies, how do your lips feel, now that you’ve slathered them with seaweed? Yuck, you protest? Well, it turns out there are more than 7,000 species of seaweed, and some of them harbor a gummy substance used in lipstick, soap, photographic film and buttons. You remember photographic film, don’t you?

FORUM To the Editor: We live in the world’s greatest country. In addition, we recently completed the election of our next president.

During the presidential campaign, one candidate insulted and belittled other candidates while calling them various names. Such a candidate would likely be considered unfit to lead his country.

However, in the United States of America that candidate won the presidential election by winning the majority of electoral votes. Meanwhile, his leading opponent won the majority of the popular votes but lost the election. Impossible you say? Not in the USA. If Donald Trump indeed wants to make changes, he can start by proposing the elimination of Electoral College voting.

Many of us paid into the Social Security system. Today, some politicians say that Social Security will run out of funds. This projected shortfall may be prevented by ending the present system where a multi-billionaire pays only the same amount into Social Security as someone who earns $109,000 (or whatever the present cap is). Donald Trump, you can save Social Security by proposing the elimination of the cap so that everyone will pay his/her fair share into the system.

We live in a country, which is envied by people living in many other countries.

My ancestors came from Czechoslovakia and Germany. The ancestry of many other citizens of our great country came from Italy, Spain, Austria, India, Japan, China, etc. Were these migrating people always upstanding citizens? Just look at the early history of Chicago, New York City, Philadelphia, as well as other cities, and see the problems they had. Our ancestors and people today, came to the United States seeking opportunities, freedom, and the chance for a better way of life. This same thought includes

Should we throw away the entire bushel merely because of a few bad apples, Mr. Donald Trump? This does not say that we should not be vigilant. We, indeed, live in a very dangerous world.

Our granddaughter was born in the United States with a special needs problem. She called us recently, very excited to say that because of Obamacare, she now has her own medical insurance.

Some people want to do away with Obamacare and retreat to the past. Donald Trump has already changed his mind about some of his campaign threats. We survived Obama’s presidency. Will we survive Donald Trump?

I hope that Donald Trump is up to the many challenges, which he will face.

Tom Skilling says

To the Editor: As a person with little background in science, I decided to educate myself on the issue of climate change since it has become a prevalent topic in recent years. I recently attended a talk on climate change (CC), with Tom Skilling as the keynote speaker. What I heard gave me a wake-up call. Here are a few of the main points that were covered: • Mr. Skilling was a CC denier until he took a trip to the Arctic and began studying the research regarding CC. He now feels CC is a great danger to us all.

• The burning of fossil fuel (oil, natural gas, coal) is the cause of most climate change.

• Some of the effects of climate change (many of which we are seeing now, according to Skilling) are floods, droughts, violent winds, and dangerous

According to Skilling, the vast majority of climate scientists agree with Skilling that we are polluting the atmosphere and causing this dangerous CC. This should not be a Democrat or Republican issue. This is a major health concern that could have catastrophic consequences for us and the people that are going to inherit the planet from us.

The government needs to stop subsidizing the fossil fuel industry and invest those monies into clean energy.

We need to start listening to the experts, like Mr. Skilling, in the climatology field.

Scott Pruitt was just nominated as the head of the EPA. He is a self-proclaimed climate change denier, without a science background. If you do not agree with his position or his appointment, I encourage you to call your senators and voice your opinion, as they have the confirmation vote.

To the Editor: The Kendall County Seniors were treated to a complete Thanksgiving dinner on Friday, Nov. 18, at the Beecher Community Center in Yorkville. The Knights of Columbus Post 14463 and the Lady Knights Auxiliary served about 150 people, and Sherri Farley provided beautiful music on the Dulcimer. The food, service and entertainment were greatly appreciated, also the work involved in putting this event together for our seniors. Thank you so much.

YORKVILLE POLICE REPORTS DUI arrest Yorkville police arrested Daniel Gonzalez-Andrade, 31, of the 2000 block of Troon Drive, Montgomery, Dec. 23 for driving under the influence of alcohol, and cited him with improper lane usage and operating an uninsured vehicle, following an accident on Kennedy Road one-quarter mile south of Freedom Place. Police said Gonzalez-Andrade’s vehicle was northbound on Kennedy Road when it left the roadway and struck a pole on the south side of the road.

Possession of drug paraphernalia Yorkville police cited Ryan L. Sherrell, 19, of the 300 block of Mallard Lane, Sandwich, for unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia Dec. 22 following a traffic stop at South Main Street and Elizabeth Street for not having a rear registration plate light.

Ordinance violation for retail theft Yorkville police issued ordinance citations for misdemeanor retail theft to April Miles, 32, of the 12000 block of Church Road, Yorkville, and a 17-year-old female juvenile Dec. 22 after police said the two stole makeup and jewelry from a retail store in the 900 block of Erica Lane. The two were observed concealing the items by store security, police said.

Fraud reported Yorkville police investigated a report of fraud in the 1000 block of Galena Road in which a

resident was the victim of an online scam resulting in a total dollar amount loss of $1,100.

Theft of vodka Yorkville police said a juvenile was returned by his mother to a store in the 200 block of East Veterans Parkway on Dec. 24 where he allegedly stole a bottle of vodka on Dec. 22.

Police said the bottle was returned and the store declined to press charges against the juvenile.

Battered at business Yorkville police are investigating a report by a female that she was battered by another female at a business in the 600 block of West Veterans Parkway on Dec. 21.

Cited following accident Yorkville police cited Cheryl Crum, 55, of the 800 block of Keller Street, Plano, Dec. 23 for disobeying a traffic control device following an accident at the intersection of Route 47 and Galena Road. Police said Crum’s vehicle was traveling eastbound on Galena at Route 47 when it entered the intersection at a red light and was struck by a vehicle traveling southbound on Route 47. Both vehicles were towed and Crum and the driver of the other vehicle, a 21-year-old Plano man, were transported to Rush-Copley Medical Center for the treatment of injuries.

Foxes capture first Ottawa Christmas Classic crown

Playing four games in a three-day span, the Yorkville girls basketball team rose to the challenge, sweeping the Ottawa Christmas Classic to win its first tournament title there in its seven-year history.

The Foxes (13-1) picked up pool play wins over LaSalle-Peru and Newark before earning a 65-51 victory over Lin-

coln-Way West in the semifinal game on Dec. 23. A few hours later, Yorkville returned against the host Pirates and clinched a 42-37 win in the title game.

“It was a phenomenal tournament for us. The best part is that I don’t think we played our best basketball, yet we still managed to win,” Yorkville coach Kim Wentsis said.

Katie Nolan was named the tournament MVP, while Audrey Macciomei and Lindsay Harrison also joined No-

lan on the All-Tournament list.

“Katie was the tournament MVP and it was very well deserving,” Wentsis said. “She does so much for us; she’s just unstoppable.”

Against Ottawa, Yorkville jumped out to a 24-17 halftime lead and maintained control in the second half. Lauren Daffenberg and Nolan had a teamhigh nine points and Lindsay Harrison chipped in with eight.

Morris (17-7) earned all three of his wins by pinfall, taking down Mukwonago (Wisc.) in the second round and Freeport in the consolation round after a quarterfinal loss to Metea Valley.

Morris then lost to Huntley by pin to move into the seventh-place match where Morris won by pin over Mt. Carmel.

At the Fox Valley Family YMCA, gymnastics is patterned after the USA Gymnastics Federation Junior Olympic Program.

The goal of this program is to help children achieve their highest potential through proper skill progression with safety always being the number one concern. Participants utilize strength and aerobic conditioning to build self-confidence, determination, teamwork, sportsmanship and more.

The training facility at the Central Branch features the assorted apparatuses, as well as a practice pit, 40’ x 40’ spring floor exercise mat and a special gym designed for the Tumbling Tykes with low beams, wedge mats and tot-sized vault.

There are three upcoming sessions of instructional classes that may be of interest to your child, including one that begins shortly after 2017 begins. Consider the following sessions: Winter I: Jan. 9 - Feb. 25; Winter II: Feb. 27 - Apr. 15; Spring: Apr. 17 - June 3.

These classes are available for many ages and advancement will vary depending on how each gymnast develops. Some may only need a few months in a class before moving up, while others may take a couple of years. Either way, children will develop motor skills through activities that increase strength, balance and body control.

Preschool classes are for ages 2-5, Girls Instructional classes include Beginner (ages 6+).

Another offering is Co-ed Tumbling with several variations, including Special Needs, Homeschool, Beginner, Advanced Tumbling, Boys Tumbling and Cheer Tumbling. There’s also the Fox Valley Flyers team.

Knights sink Foxes at the buzzer

There probably were many Yorkville fans scratching their heads after the Foxes’ game against Kaneland on Tuesday in Plano’s 54th annual Christmas Classic.

The Foxes blanked the Knights in the first quarter, outrebounded them 29-11 overall and held them to 35 percent shooting, but somehow came up short of a victory, falling on a last-second layup, 39-37. Coincidentally, the Knights also edged the Foxes, 35-32 on Dec. 2, as their two games this season have gone down to the wire. They’ll meet again on Jan. 27.

“We took some really poor shots in the third and fourth quarter,” Yorkville coach Mike Dunn said. “Their pressure gave us fits. Give them credit though.

They made plays and we didn’t, but I tell you, for three quarters we were as good as we’ve been defensively all season.”

Yorkville seemingly was in command late in the third quarter, taking a 32-15 lead with 2:01 left after Jake Eberhart’s three-pointer. The Knights closed the quarter with a pair of baskets to cut

their deficit, but they still trailed by 12 points heading into the final quarter.

They wouldn’t go away though and their defensive pressure caused all sorts of problems for Yorkville. They forced 18 turnovers overall, including a handful in the fourth quarter that proved to be huge.

“We scrambled and scrapped more and caused some problems for them,” Kaneland coach Joe Conroy said. “They made some errors and I just thought our defensive intensity changed from the first to the second half and made a big difference.”

Jake Hed’s layup off a turnover came with 3:14 left and cut Yorkville’s lead to 34-30. Kyle Stuart’s three-pointer from the corner with 1:42 remaining made it a 34-33.

A technical on a Kaneland player helped the Foxes increase their lead to 35-33 with 1:30 left, but it wouldn’t be enough as Kaneland’s Daniel Franck answered. He was fouled on his successful layup and then sank the ensuing free throw to give the Knights their first lead of the game at 36-35 with only 45.8 seconds remaining.

Franck (12 points) would later split two free throws to make it 37-35, but the

Foxes responded with a putback from Jonathan Suarez to tie it up with 7 seconds remaining.

While the game appeared destined for overtime, Franck had other ideas, taking a crisp pass from Rhett Espe and laying it in as the buzzer sounded.

“That play wasn’t even designed for me, but Rhett drove the floor and there was a big opening,” Franck said.

“I truthfully thought that big kid [Jason Lewan] was going to swat me, but it got over the rim and was exciting.”

While Dunn was disappointed to see the game end they way it did, he was pleased with how his Foxes had rallied to tie it, especially after giving up a 17-point lead in 10 minutes.

“We did not execute on the last play of the game and they made a play when they had to,” he said. “I loved though how in our last possession we missed a three, but our smallest kid on the floor got it and tied the game. We could’ve given up, but didn’t so I give our kids a lot of credit.”

Once upon a time, long before Snapchat and Twitter, I kept myself entertained with chain letters.

With a piece of paper and a pencil, I’d write a letter to the person listed at the top of the original sheet and then copy that note three times, moving the names ahead and adding mine to the bottom.

As my list of penpals grew, so did my love of writing. By the time I was 13, I was addressing letters to Japan, France and the former Yugoslavia, and one summer I met a girl from Alaska while camping in South Dakota with my family. She was added to my address book too.

This week, I am writing my final letter to you, the readers, as I prepare to step away from my pad of paper and my role as Kendall County Record Newspapers sports editor to begin a new chapter outside of journalism.

You have kept our chain of weekly correspondences going for a long time, turning page after page – and for that I am forever grateful.

By CHRIS WALKER sports@kendallcountynow.com Newark had to shake off the rust when it hit the hardwood on Tuesday to take on Princeton in the Plano Christmas Classic.

The rust might not be entirely knocked off just yet, but there wasn’t any falling from the rim after Will Clausel netted the game winner with 0.5 seconds left to lift the Norsemen to a 60-59 come-from-behind victory.

Newark (7-1) had trailed 59-55 with under a minute left the final outcome appeared bleak for the Norsemen. Then, Dylan Patrick’s 3-pointer with 44 seconds left cut their deficit to 59-58.

“I knew I had to hit one for our team,” Patrick said. “That was good and then Will [Clausel] followed with a big shot.”

After forcing a turnover, Patrick once again decided it was a good time to bomb away, but his shot was off target. Fortunately, teammate Corey Jacobson was there to grab the offensive rebound and then send a quick pass to Clausel, who hammered home the jumper near the free throw line for the win.

“Corey got a big rebound and I would not have been able to do that without him,” Clausel said. “I found myself open and knocked it down.”

Tuesday’s game marked Newark’s first time on the court since Dec. 9 after a pair of game cancellations and a first-round tournament bye. Some teams don’t show any negative signs from a long layoff from playing, but Newark struggled all morning. For one thing, not many teams are accustomed to playing at 10:30 in the morning. Making things even more difficult is playing for the first time in 18 days.

“Our rhythm was off,” Clausel said. “We were dysfunctional offensively. We couldn’t make anything, but we have to figure it out. It’s not an excuse.

We battled and hung around long enough and finally figured it out at the end.”

Princeton was dominant on the glass and punished the Norsemen with a strong inside presence from Colby Robbins (19 points), Colton Youngren (16 points) and Jacob Farraher (10 points).

“We were having trouble rebounding,” Clausel said. “We just kind of came out and they kicked us at the start, but we battled. Our shooting was bad. It was just a weird game all in all.”

Unlike Newark, Princeton had just played, defeating Lisle in their tournament opener on Dec. 26.

“Our big guys battled hard underneath and played well while helping open things up for our guards,” Princeton coach Michael Fredericks said. “But Newark is a really good team. We knew we’d play them hard and fight them tooth and nail, and we’ve been in close games like this. Once again it came down to a big play at the end, and their guys made it.”
