There will be contested races in three of the four Yorkville aldermanic wards in the April election.

The deadline to file as a candidate in the spring election was 5 p.m. Monday.

Ward 1 Alderman Ken Koch will be facing two challengers in his bid for re-election: former City Treasurer Bob Allen and former Kendall County Board member Amy Cesich.

Three people filed for election in Ward 2, which was represented most recently by Larry Kot, who retired this month. Former Alderman Arden Plocher, Yorkville Park Board President Deborah Horaz, and Robert Gryder filed for election in Ward 2.

Alderman Joel Frieders filed for re-election. He represents Ward 3, and has no opponents in the April election.

Andrew Graham and Alejandro Hernandez filed for alderman in Ward 4, which currently is being represented

by Alderman Diane Teeling. Teeling is not running for re-election.

One seat from each of the four City Council wards is up for election in April. The other four will be up for election in 2019.

The following is the list of candidates for the City of Yorkville alderman.

Bristol Township man charged with trespassing at County Clerk’s Office

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com A Bristol Township man was arrested Dec. 14 for criminal trespass at the County Office Building in Yorkville.

Kendall County sheriff’s deputies arrested Carl Bodnar, 72, of the 7000 block of Galena Road, Bristol, for criminal trespass to land Carl Bodnar following a dispute with the County Clerk’s Office.

Sheriff’s deputies said he had been asked to leave the premises earlier this year.

“Earlier in the year, he had an incident with some discrepancies with the

County Clerk’s Office, and they had asked that he be trespassed from the property,” sheriff’s office spokesman Deputy Michael Mrozek said. “He was back there the other day, and he was violating that trespass, and that’s why he was arrested.”

Mrozek said once a person is served with a trespass violation, they are not allowed to come back to the property for one year.

If the victim decides to extend that trespass order beyond that year, they need to contact the sheriff’s office, he said.

The Kendall County Board has been discussing increasing security at the County Office Building following requests from County Clerk Debbie Gillette and County Treasurer Jill Ferko.

Pinter said the food pantry staff sees these families every Thursday, which allows them to get to know them on a more personal basis, which makes the wish for a nice Christmas stronger.

“If they can’t afford food, they can’t afford gifts. We get to know these kids and we don’t want to leave anybody out at Christmas. Christmas is all about the kids,” Pinter added.

Wedeen said it was convenient to go through the food pantry because most of the people in need are there, they know the needs of the families and they don’t have to do any of the verification of children because that was done by

the food pantry. Families also came to them through schools and churches.

Wedeen along with other Yorkville Junior Women’s Club members, residents, Yorkville High School clubs and Yorkville Boy Scout Pack 350 were among the 50 volunteers who worked the four-hour shopping day.

Young and old alike volunteered their Saturday morning, some with a wish to teach their children the true meaning of Christmas.

“Right now when it seems like everything in the world is about taking, we wanted to show the importance of giving and how to support our community. My youngest son wanted to shop for himself, but I had to remind him that these toys are for those people who are having hard times,” Yorkville Boy Scout Pack 350 Committee Chair Craig Emmert said.

Anabel Chavez of Yorkville walked into the Kendall County Community Food Pantry which was transformed into Santa’s workshop, filled with toys for girls and boys of all ages. Chavez, like so many this time of year, felt the financial crunch of the holidays and reached out for help.

“I am short on income, so I came to the food pantry today. It’s a lot of help with presents for my five kids. My children would not have enough presents – I appreciate all of the help they gave us,” Chavez said.

On Saturday, Dec. 17, 430 families waited patiently for their turn to shop at the annual “Operation Santa” event sponsored by the Yorkville Junior Women’s Club, hosted at the Kendall County Community Food Pantry at 208 Beaver St. Event chairperson and Yorkville Junior Women’s Club member Teresa Wedeen said this was year 25 for “Operation Santa,” which fits in with the mission of the club.

“When the club started, it focused on woman and children. We saw a need several years ago and it started with a couple families, and it has enlarged as the community and the food pantry enlarged,” Wedeen said.

Wedeen said this was the first time the event was held at the food pantry, and the first year that the gifts were arranged on tables by age and gender, which allowed the parents to shop specifically for the likes of their child. In the past, the clients would just take an age appropriate bag, but Wedeen said they never knew if the child liked what they received.

The event began at 10 a.m. with a line out the door shortly after. The need was evident and the larger 10,000 square-foot space made a warm place for most to wait until their number was called to shop.

Food pantry director Tandy Pinter said the food pantry was happy to house the event for several reasons.

“First, we knew the last several years Teresa would run around town trying to find an empty building for the

Tables were set out with toys, which were donated by people in the community along with churches, businesses and schools. Volunteers were at each table to assist the families. Runners, usually the younger children, went back and forth from the storage area to replenish the toys so the first and last family had the same shopping experience. Personal shoppers sat at the door and when a new shopper came in, they handed them bags for their gifts and guided them through the process.

Wedeen said each child receives a large and small gift, as well as a book, hat and gloves, one board game per family and wrapping paper. Teen bags were created by the food pantry for children 13-17 and included candy, snacks, hats, gloves, and scarves and jewelry and nail polish for girls, as well as pocket tool sets for the boys.

Shawanna Townsend of Plano came to shop for her three children aged 13, 7, and 3.

“I came here for this blessing to get gifts for my children. This is such a blessing. To get these gifts saves me money, which is a big help,” Townsend said.

Yorkville Junior Women’s Club member Dana Wood said every year she has volunteered she sees so much emotion from the volunteers, as well as the recipients of the gifts.

“My favorite part is connecting – seeing what all of this work is for and see the families react to what they are getting. Every year we have families in tears and [they] tell us if we had not done this, they would not have had anything for their kids,” Wood said.

In all, 1200 children now will have gifts to open Christmas morning due to the efforts of the Yorkville Junior Women’s Club and the support of the Yorkville community.

“When I was a child Christmas was a magical time. These people don’t have money for the basics, so we want to give these children an image of what everyone else gets – presents from Santa,” Wedeen said.

Rail quiet zone worth further consideration The proposed establishment of a railroad quiet zone in downtown Yorkville is again an issue for the city council.

Last year the city council considered, but then, citing costs concerns, chose not to pursue the completion of an engineering study which would be the first step in the creation of a quiet zone. But responding to continuing complaints from downtown-area residents about the loud train horns, Mayor Gary Golinski has asked the council’s public works committee to consider the issue. If the committee can reach a consensus, they will bring the issue back to the full city council for further consideration and possible action.

Railroad quiet zones have been established in recent years in neighboring Plano and in nearby

Aurora and Sugar Grove townships in Kane County.

And responding to complaints from residents, the Montgomery Village Board voted last year to proceed with a quiet zone study for the village’s downtown.

In asking for further committee study of the issue, Golinski suggested the loud train horns could pose a hindrance to future residential development in the city’s downtown area.

We believe the quiet zone issue is worth further study by city officials, but remain wary of the potential cost to the city. In order for a quiet zone to be established, it is likely that multiple railroad crossings in the city’s downtown area will require significant safety improvements. It’s important to note, too, that the quiet zones established in nearby

communities in recent years have all been along rail lines with significantly higher volumes of daily train traffic than the line that extends through downtown Yorkville.

In considering the issue once again, city officials also should explore the possibility of requiring future downtown-area developers to help pay for the necessary rail crossing improvements that a quiet zone will need.

The city could require and negotiate contributions to a rail quiet zone fund from individual developers as part of their project development agreements. In the meantime, now is an opportune time for residents interested the in the quiet zone issue to share their views with Golinski and their aldermen.

Recalling the long-ago winter of perfect sledding REFLECTIONS Roger Matile When December rolled around, us kids knew two things: Christmas was getting close, and good sledding was a definite possibility – with a little help from Mother Nature.

Like so many French fur traders greasing their traps in preparation for gathering furs or farmers putting the finishing touches on repairing and storing their machinery until spring, we started making our preparations for sledding success to come.

Some of us had toboggans, but not many. Toboggans are unwieldy and relatively unmaneuverable, and they take quite a bit of care. But for those who had them, they were taken down from where they were hanging in garages and barns, dusted off, the grab ropes along the side checked to make sure they were sound and wouldn’t break during an exciting downhill run, and the pull rope in front inspected for wear. Then the bottom was given a good coat of wax pilfered from the parents’ car cleaning supplies.

Most of us, though, had our trusty coasting sleds with a wooden deck and steel runners. Getting them ready for action meant wiping off the dust and cobwebs, and sandpapering or steel wooling the runners to remove months of rust. Applying wax to the runners from the candle nub many of us kept handy in a pocket for emergencies made everything ready for action.

VIEWS Tony Scott Monday was the deadline to apply for Affordable Care Act marketplace insurance during the open enrollment period. And it may be the last deadline for that program, if certain politicians get their way.

Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has said repealing the ACA, also known as Obamacare, will be the first item on the Senate’s agenda in the new year. Hopefully, the politicians will have a plan to replace the Act, so the millions of people covered under it don’t have the rug pulled out from under them, but I wouldn’t hold your breath.

The Affordable Care Act insurance isn’t perfect.

There were 28.5 million people still uninsured as of the end of 2015, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation, mostly because they can’t afford to pay the premiums even after factoring in subsidies, aren’t eligible for subsidized rates, or other reasons.

It can also be ridiculously complex to sign up for coverage. I know of several friends who support the coverage but voiced to me frustration in trying to sign up for coverage. Some coverage is inadequate, with the only “affordable” option a high-deductible plan.

I get it. I have a personal relationship with Obamacare. I was freelancing and working part-time for a year before returning full-time to the newspaper industry. While signing up for the exchanges was relatively easy, switching coverage could get confusing and, again, I was faced with a monthly premium that I could afford but only if I joined a plan with a $6,000 or so deductible.

And yet, I support the ACA wholeheartedly. The ACA insurance was my only option as someone who was self-employed and also had pre-existing medical conditions. Without it, I would have most likely been uninsured and headed for financial disaster had I encountered a serious medical problem during my tenure as a freelancer.

In the end, we need to find a solution, and that solution may be in the dreaded socialist plans of Germany, France, Canada, Norway, or any number of civilized

countries that have found that a single-payer or Medicare-for-all style of system is the way to go. The only parties who should be stomping their feet and challenging such an idea are the big insurance companies, and you can bet that they have the ears, and the pocketbooks, of the politicians in Washington.

I’ve never understood the resistance to this idea of Medicare-for-all, except that certain politicians use it as a piece of red meat in which to bait their base and trick them into thinking that something that could save them from medical bankruptcy is somehow bad for them.

Among the arguments is that it will raise your taxes. Look at your tax bills, your receipts. Do you think we have low taxes now? What are we getting out of them? We have trillions of tax dollars to spend on wars, billions to spend on defense contracts, but when it comes to insuring the nation’s middle class? Whoa, whoa, pump the brakes, Stalin.

Look around your communities. How many pork chop suppers, pizza fundraisers, and other events are held just so that a family can raise a few thousand dollars to pay for their kid’s cancer treatment? Is that your idea of freedom? What about the cost of drugs that a family has to pay for upfront so their son or daughter can get that experimental treatment that could potentially save their life? Is that liberty?

And while the politicians in Washington like to tell people “Oh no, not health care for all, that’s bad, this is not for you,” they get premium health care themselves, bought and paid for with your tax dollars, while they stuff their campaign coffers with contributions from Big Insurance.

To paraphrase the great George Carlin, it’s a big club, and you and I are not in it.

They say that the election of Trump was a sign of growing anger in this country about the elites in Washington not understanding the working class.

Well, will the working class at last stand up to those elites and demand a basic, fair health care system for all? Or will we continue to delude ourselves that we “can’t afford” a true health care system, as people die because they literally can’t afford to get better.

To the Editor: While Congress prepares to “repeal and replace” the Affordable Care Act, it’s important to remember what’s really at stake – the health and well-being of people – including over 1 million Illinoisans who depend on coverage under the ACA. We can’t afford to take action that disrupts health care coverage and the Illinois economy.

Any repeal of ACA coverage should not take effect until the replacement plan takes effect.

If Congress does not make repeal of coverage contingent on adoption of a replacement plan, then Congress should also repeal the hospital payment cuts that help pay for ACA coverage.

Illinois hospitals have experienced over $1 billion in ACA payment cuts.

Otherwise, people won’t be able to get the care they need, local economies will suffer and jobs will be lost. Facing revenue losses, hospitals will be forced to cut spending by reducing services and staff, delaying new technology and facilities or shifting costs to privately insured patients.

If Congress repeals coverage and does not replace it, the preliminary estimate is that the loss of this revenue in Illinois will result in a potential loss of $11.6 billion to $13.1 billion in annual economic activity which translates to a potential loss of 84,000 to 95,000 jobs.

On behalf of our 200 hospitals and 50 health systems, and the patients and communities they serve, IHA looks forward to working in a bipartisan manner with our state and federal officials to improve our health system. Remember the first lesson of medicine – First, do no harm.

Kendall County Board approves property tax levies

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com The Kendall County Board unanimously approved all of its property tax levies for the coming year at its meeting Tuesday.

The levies included one for the Health Department, which was initially reduced to allow the county to help pay its employee benefits.

The levies will be reflected on the county portion of local property tax bills that will be mailed to all county property owners of record in late April or early May. Board member John Purcell, the board’s finance chairman, explained after the meeting that there were issues related to the Health Department’s benefits being paid by the county’s funds.

The County Board a year ago approved a budget which asked the Health Department to contribute $350,000 toward the cost of Health Department employee benefits, including IMRF and Social Security, Purcell said. The cost of the benefits last year was a little more than $900,000 and, this fiscal year, the amount of benefits was almost $1 million, he said.

The health department’s entire budget is approximately $4.5 million,

but only $1.6 million of that revenue comes from tax levies, Purcell said.

They get the balance of those funds from grants, fees and other revenue, he said.

Purcell said the county asked the health department to contribute $350,000 last fiscal year and $375,000 this fiscal year from its budget to the General Fund to help the county pay for those benefits.

As part of an agreement with the county, the Health Department agreed to contribute $350,000 this past budget year to the county’s coffers to help the county pay for the department’s employee benefits, but Purcell said the department had only contributed $125,000 of that amount by the end of the fiscal year in November.

“When we were finalizing the budget [this year] we realized we were $225,000 short, so we said we have to get that from somewhere, so what we did is we reduced their levy request by $225,000,” he said.

Purcell said the department had agreed to pay that $225,000 from its coffers, as long as the county didn’t reduce its levy, but that there still was the issue of the $375,000 that would be coming from the Health Department funds to the county coffers in this budget year.

Dr. Amaal Tokars, executive director of the Health Department, spoke to the board Tuesday morning stating that the department would pay that money through its funds if the board didn’t reduce the department’s levy for the coming year.

As a result, Purcell said he supported a levy that was originally proposed, rather than a reduced levy for the Health Department.

The County Board approved the Health Department’s tax levy of $757,000 in a unanimous vote.

In addition, the board approved the following maximum fund levy amounts unanimously: General Fund: $11,208,725; Veteran’s Assistance Commission: $403,789; Tuberculosis Fund: $15,000; Liability Insurance Fund: $1.1 million; Social Security Fund, $1,535,000; Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund: $3 million; County Bridge Fund: $500,000; County Highway Fund: $1.5 million; Extension Education Fund: $187,527; Senior Citizen Social Services Fund: $350,000; 708 Mental Health Fund: $930,000.

The state gets back 75 cents per dollar for what it pays in federal taxes, he said.

“Business and income taxes is about $25 billion,” Foster said. “If we got rid of the ‘payer’ state problem … we could eliminate all state taxes in Illinois.”

But Illinois Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, took Foster to task.

“Which side of the moon have you been living on?” Oberweis said. “Certainly not in Kane County. We are in

an incredibly difficult financial situation. We are the family that goes out and spends and spends and spends … and all of a sudden the credit card runs out.”

Oberweis advocated supporting Rauner’s initiatives to reform workman’s compensation and to encourage business to build the state’s tax base.

Then state Sen. Linda Chapa LaVia, D-Aurora, took Oberweis to task for his comments about Foster.

“That was uncalled for,” Chapa LaVia said. “We don’t do that. That’s bullying. That does not get us anywhere.”

ST. CHARLES – Illinois’ continuing budget issues and delay in paying service providers puts agencies that care for senior citizens and those with disabilities at risk of cutting services – or closing entirely.

Marla Fronczak, the community planning division manager for the Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging, and others painted a dire picture for agencies that serve the elderly and those with disabilities.

“The notion that government cannot afford these programs really misses a huge reality,” Fronczak said. “This is the most cost-effective way to do it – with nonprofits – rather than hospitals or nursing homes or prisons.”

Fronczak, other service providers and several elected officials participated in the 28th annual Kane County Legislative Forum on Aging and Disability Issues, held at the Pottawatomie Community Center in St. Charles, with about 65 people in attendance.

Local agencies that provide in-home care are nearing a “tipping point,” where many may never recover, if lawmakers and Gov. Bruce Rauner do not address budget issues, Fronczak said.

The stop-gap budget appropriation

bill will end on Dec. 31, she said.

“Without these programs, tens of thousands of Illinoisans will not receive services … threatening the life and well-being of Illinois’ most vulnerable residents,” Fronczak said.”

Without a state budget, funding can only be released through appropriations bills, court mandates or consent decrees, Fronczak said.

“We are slowly dismantling human services,” Fronczak said. ”Our providers will shut down, and some will never open again.”

Bette Schoenholtz, executive director for Senior Services Associates, described six seniors who receive care – from a few hours a week to 35 hours a week.

Cutting those services to place those individuals in nursing homes would cost at least $106,000 a year – an increase of $70,000 to $90,000 a year per person, Schoenholtz said.

Schoenholtz said with a stop-gap budget and no budget, it leaves these agencies not knowing what money is coming in.

U.S. Rep. Bill Foster D-Naperville, warned that the state faces the risk of real cuts to funding for human services.

“The cuts will be called ‘reforms,’ but they will be cuts,” Foster said.

A group of business owners and community leaders crowded the Yorkville High School library Thursday morning to learn more about a new YHS program linking students to local businesses for real-world work experiences.

The Field Experience Program is open to junior and senior students. YHS teacher Melissa Wojowski, the coordinator for the program, told the audience that there were currently 12 students signed up for the program but expects there will be more.

In a presentation to the group, Wojowski said the program will give students the “opportunity to prepare for career success outside high school through personalized, realistic learning experiences.”

“Students will gain valuable work experience in an area of their interest, create a network of contacts, and learn valuable, transferable, self-management, and job-related skills while earning school credit towards graduation,” she said.

Yorkville High School principal David Travis said they realize high school education is “not enough.”

“We know that education is going to continue past high school graduation,” he said. “We really adopt the mindset here that graduation is simply a milestone for kids, not a capstone; it’s going to continue.

What it looks like in the 21st century for our kids is going to be very different. Some are two-year [college] students, some are four-year students, some are military, some are technical school, whatever that may be.”

“That really is a problem for us, and when we look at why, some of it’s academic readiness, some of it is they’re not sure, but a lot of the reason is they just don’t know why they’re pursuing that plan,” he said.

“They just don’t know.”

Travis said the Field Experience Program will give students real life, real world experience to help them determine a path.

“So you can help us change that statistic,” he told the crowd. “We need to do better for our kids, for our community.”

Wojowski said she and a working group conducted research into similar programs at other schools and created a team to develop a proposal. She said they visited other districts including Crystal Lake and Arlington Heights to learn about those districts’ programs.

Typically in the program, students will undergo an application process and, if accepted into the program, will work with Wojowski to find a business to partner with. The business will then interview the student, just as they would for a job, Wojowski said.

The students will work for five hours a week, she said.

The students will initially work with the coordinator and will begin their field experience in the second week of the program, she said.

Students will be evaluated by the business mentor and the field experience coordinator to receive a grade, Wojowski said.

Once lauded as hero, Plano woman faces drug, gun charges

By BRETT ROWLAND browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A Plano woman who was heralded as a local hero in 2015 faces drug and gun charges after being arrested Saturday near Sandwich.

Heather C. Adamcyk, 28, of the 3200 block of Veronica Street, Plano, was charged with armed violence, possession of 4 grams of cocaine, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, obstruction of identification and possession of drug paraphernalia. Heather If convicted of the most Adamcyk serious charge, armed violence, she could face six to 30 years in prison.

A DeKalb County sheriff’s deputy stopped the vehicle Adamcyk was driving for not having insurance after a registration check about 4 p.m. Friday near the intersection of East Sandwich Road and Wagner Road, according to a police synopsis included in court documents.

Adamcyk first gave the deputy a false name and birth date. When asked

whose car she was driving, she was unable to answer without help from a passenger, according to the police report.

A Sandwich police dog flagged the vehicle as one of the passengers was being arrested on an outstanding warrant.

Police found a 9mm handgun under the driver’s seat near Adamcyk’s feet, according to the report. In her purse, police said they found several hypodermic needles, and they also found a clear glass pipe in the car. She told the police she used the pipe to smoke methamphetamine, according to police reports.

During a strip search at the DeKalb County Jail, deputies found a clear plastic bag with 4 grams of cocaine hidden on Adamcyk’s person.

In November, Adamcyk was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of a hypodermic needle and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to court records.

Adamcyk remained at the DeKalb County Jail as of Monday evening in lieu of $100,000 bond.

In 2015, Little Rock-Fox Fire Protection District officials called Adamcyk a hero after she helped save the life of a 2-and-a-half-year-old boy in the Lakewood Creek subdivision.

Food dyes in colored candy and sweetened drinks (including sports drinks) also create stains.

To help avoid staining your teeth, brush right away after consuming the offending foods or drinks. Use toothpaste with a whitening agent. If you can’t brush, try to rinse your mouth with water. When drinking, use a straw if possible. Visit your dentist regularly to keep teeth polished and to avoid buildup of tough stains.

Julia Megazzini is a candidate for the 2017 Student of the Year scholarship award.

She plans to attend Augustana University or the University of St. Thomas, double majoring in Political Science and International Studies. Her hope is to become an Ambassador for the United States.

Activities and Honors Julia is the daughter of Steven and Geannine Megazzini.

During her four years at Yorkville High School, Julia has made it a point to be involved in a variety of activities in hopes of furthering her passion for helping others as a leader, coach, teammate and mentor.

She has participated in varsity-level Cross County and Track and Field during each year, dedicating hours upon hours to the sport.

In addition, Julia is a member of the school’s T.R.Y. Club, Student Council, National Honor Society, Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society, the Student Ambassadors, and was one of five students chosen to participate in the Student Leadership Initiative Program.

In the SLIP Program, Julia and others work on building communication, leadership and teamwork through conducting service learning projects.

When she’s not involved in school activities, Julia can be seen volunteering for outside organizations. She’s spent time volunteering at Feed My Starving Children, and spent time as a summer school teacher’s aid. She has also put on theatrical shows with the Yorkville Educators Association.

“I had to master how to manage my time in order to balance all of the activities I’m involved in and a rigorous course load,” Julia said.

She credits multiple teachers, counselors, coaches and friends who have helped support her goals. Through her participation Julia has acquired teamwork skills, resilience, open-mindedness and a strong work ethic, as well as learned how to collaborate with others.

Julia’s dream is to become an ambassador for the United States, and she said she believes the strong leadership skills she’s developed in school will help with that.

“The reason I want to pursue a career in diplomacy is because I want to work with other countries in trying to develop peaceful relations,” she said. “I see there is hope for a better future if we can set realistic goals and work together as nations to create a better life for all of mankind.”

Sloier, 53, of the 16100 block of Howard Avenue, Plainfield, for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident following an accident at the intersection of Route 47 and Baseline Road Dec. 13 at 5:40 a.m. Police said Sloier’s vehicle struck the rear of another vehicle in the westbound lane of Baseline Road. Sloier was also cited for not having insurance.

• Yorkville police cited Valerie Pierson of the 100 block of Center Street, Yorkville, following an accident Dec. 12 for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Police say her vehicle was slowing or stopping in the northbound lane of Route 47 at Boombah Boulevard when it struck the rear bumper of a vehicle stopped in traffic. Pierson’s vehicle then swerved right, went into the ditch, struck a snowplow for sale on the property and crashed through a homeowner’s fence. Her vehicle was towed from the scene.

Hit and run Yorkville police reported that the owner of a 2008 Kia parked in the 100 block of Colonial Parkway reported that an unknown dark colored vehicle traveling westbound on Colonial struck the Kia. The vehicle then continued westbound and made a left on to Route 47. The Kia sustained major damage and was towed, police said.

Beck, 18, of the 100 block of West Wall Street, Ancona, and a juvenile passenger in her vehicle were injured when the vehicle they were riding in on Route 47 left the roadway near Helmar Road in Kendall Township Dec. 12 at 10:32 p.m. and overturned in a ditch.

KENDALL COUNTY RECORD Free suicide prevention training will be offered to Yorkville School District 115 parents and staff at a program Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. the Yorkville Middle School auditorium.

This presentation will cover important risk factors and warning signs for suicide as well as how parents can talk to their children about this often difficult topic and where to find help when needed. Presenter Katie Baker, LCPC, is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and director at Elyssa’s Mission.

She has extensive experience in suicide prevention education.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death for young people ages 10-34 years old.

For the first time ever, middle school students ages 10-14 years old are dying more by suicide than automobile accidents. The suicide rates for girls in this age range have

tripled since 1999.

Elyssa’s Mission provides resources to help prevent teen suicide. The community-based organization was founded in 2006 in honor of Elyssa, a bright, gifted and outgoing Chicago-area girl who bravely battled post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. Elyssa’s Mission provides hands-on support to area public and private schools and community organizations in order to educate students, staff and parents on how to recognize and assist those teens most at-risk.

Elyssa’s Mission fully funds and implements the evidence-based SOS Signs of Suicide Prevention Program in over 100 middle and high schools in Illinois. Learn more at elyssasmission.org.

Spirit Cheer teams win in St. Louis, Milwaukee KENDALL COUNTY RECORD Spirit Cheer brought five of their full season All-Star teams to Athletic Championships in St. Louis on Nov. 19-20. The Spirit teams battled it out over this two-day national event and four Spirit teams came out in the top three.

Vengeance Junior Level 2 was named the gold champion. Inspire Youth Level 2 was named the Silver Champion and D2 champion. Passion

Junior Level 1 earned Bronze Champion and Best Stunts. Envy Senior Level 4 co-ed was named Bronze Champions and Int3nsity Junior Level 3 was eighth overall.

Spirit then traveled to Wisconsin on Dec. 3 to compete at the UCA Milwaukee Championship. Intensity performed a brand new routine and Spirit’s first ever Level 5 team, ObesS5ion – a Senior Level 5R team – competed for the first time. Three teams took home Division Champion banners.

Inspire, Passion and Obsession were named champions. Pride and Envy took third, Intensity was fourth and Vengeance took 14th.

Spirit hosted their 8th annual Winter Competition at Yorkville Middle School on Dec. 11. Seven of Spirit’s recreational teams from Yorkville, Coal City, Oswego and Sannauk (Sandwich & Somonauk co-op) competed at this event. There were also exhibition performances from Team Energy (Recreational Tiny team, 6yrs and under),

Team Frenzy (All Star Prep Tiny Level 1), Team Unity (All Star Prep Youth Level 2) and Team Ambition (All Star Prep Junior Level 1). All of the teams did an outstanding job.

In the JV Division, the Oswego Cougars finished first, Coal City Gems second, Sannauk Stars third and Yorkville Pups fourth. In the SV Division, the Yorkville Pups took first and were named Grand Champions. Oswego Cougars were second and Sannauk Stars were third.

Newark girls basketball falls to Annawan, LaSalle-Peru KENDALL COUNTY RECORD On Dec. 13, the Norsemen lost to Annawan 47-39. Jasmine Mitchell led Newark with 15 points and eight rebounds.

Alyssa Gittins added eight points and seven rebounds. Riane Tomsa and Meggie Scott each added seven points. Annawan was led by Jade Vanhyfte with 28 points.

Newark (10-4) opened the Ottawa Christmas Classic earlier than expected when Yorkville’s games were postponed by weather conditions. Originally scheduled for Dec. 21, the Norsemen faced LaSalle-Peru on Saturday and fell 57-37 in pool play. Newark will face

Yorkville on Thursday before wrapping up the tournament Friday and Saturday in championship bracket play.

“We could not match up against their post players and they hurt us on the offensive boards,” Newark coach Barb Scott said of LaSalle-Peru. “I was not pleased with our rebounding effort.

“We are a young team and are working to improve defensively, as well as becoming more efficient in our offensive sets. The competition in this tournament is really good for us as we move into the second half of our season,” Scott added.

Yorkville Sophomore: On Dec. 13, the Foxes trailed Sycamore 23-19 early in

the third quarter. From that point on, they outscored the Spartans 22-3 resulting in a 42-26 final score. Claudia Grunwald led the team with a double double – 15 points and 13 rebounds – and also had six steals. Olivia Ross contributed 13 points. Jayshawna Smith pulled down 11 rebounds. Delaney Seeman, Jayshawna and Calli Bishop each made three steals and Delaney and Calli each contributed three assists.

The Lady Foxes jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start the game but lost 3825 to Geneseo in a crossover game for their first conference loss of the year.

The Yorkville girls basketball team endured an unexpected schedule change on Saturday.

The Foxes (9-1) were originally slated to play two of their three pool play games in the Ottawa Christmas Classic, but Yorkville made the decision to cancel all Saturday events due to the anticipated snowfall.

Ottawa shuffled its schedule, with Newark facing LaSalle-Peru on Saturday in Pool B action. The Norsemen lost 57-37 to the Cavaliers to start the tournament.

Yorkville was scheduled to face LaSalle-Peru on Dec. 21 and Newark (10-4) on Thursday, Dec. 22 to complete the pool play games. The 12-team tournament continues through Friday with

championship play.

“The weather was going to be questionable and icy, and we have finals, so we decided to stay home and study for finals and rest up because we had Geneseo rescheduled and two pretty physical games last week,” Yorkville coach Kim Wentsis said.

“We have high goals going into Ottawa. We have to take care of Newark and LaSalle first, and we’d like to get a rematch with Lincoln-Way West.

We’ve seen them the last two or three years and we have yet to beat them, so I know the girls are looking forward to that chance.”

Yorkville enters the tournament on a six-game win streak after wins over Sycamore and Geneseo last week. On Dec. 15, the Foxes hosted Geneseo in a rescheduled game and secured a 51-32 win.

YORKVILLE’S JENSEN COMMITS TO ISU

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com Brooke Jensen has grown accustomed to change.

From YMCA swim meets to club competition, she moved into high school as one of four swimmers at Yorkville. As a sophomore, Yorkville joined IMSA as a co-op program and she spent three seasons as team captain.

Now, Jensen will make her next transition to Division I swimming, committing to Illinois State University’s women’s program last month.

“ISU has always been my dream school. I knew I wanted to go into education, and it was whether I wanted to swim or not. I did want to swim, and it was one of my top choices,” Jensen said.

Her final decision came down to Illinois State, Indiana State and Youngstown State.

“I went on my official visit at Illinois State and I fell in love with it – the coaches, the girls, the way they train, the campus – literally everything,” Jensen said. “I committed two days later. It was a very good fit for me. It was the perfect combination.”

She recognized a few familiar faces at the Redbird pool, including DeKalb alum Jensen Keck, Joliet Catholic alum Savannah Rubocki and former Naperville North swimmer Sarah Thomas from her days at club swim meets.

Jensen started swimming at a young age, first with the Fox Valley YMCA in Plano before moving to Delta Aquatics in Oswego four years ago where she currently swims. As a Yorkville freshman, she was an independent sectional competitor and now leaves high school as a state qualifier, school record holder and two-time Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference Most Valuable Swimmer.

We only had about four girls, and one of our Yorkville teachers came with us as a representative.

“I’ve swam on the Yorkville-IMSA co-op for three years and it was a really cool experience being able to be around people in a different culture. IMSA isn’t a traditional public high school, so it was really cool to be around that type of atmosphere.

It definitely taught me a lot, swimming-wise, academically and socially.”

Jensen was part of the 200-free relay team, which set a school record at the Metea Valley Sectional (1:37.32) to qualify for state. Individually, she also set a new school record in the 200 free with her sectional finish in 1:56.18, and did it again in the 100 free when she finished in 53.59 seconds.

The IMSA-Yorkville co-op girls’ swim team won its fourth consecutive championship at the Northern Illinois Independent Conference Invite. Jen-

sen won the 200 free event. On Oct. 15, the team also competed in the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference race in Sterling and took first place. Jensen earned All-Conference honors and also received the Most Valuable Swimmer Award.

She plans to continue in the sprint freestyle events at ISU, and will continue swimming with Delta Aquatics through March.

“The 50, 100 and 200 free are my specialties,” Jensen said. “That’s definitely what I’m hoping to continue next year.”
