By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Yorkville Mayor Gary Golinski told the City Council Tuesday that he recently approved a study of quiet zones for areas in the city near railroad tracks, but that he now wants the study to go through the City Council’s committee process.

The City Council has discussed the issue of quiet zones in the past, but voted against spending the money on such a study in June 2015.

Golinski said he gave City Administrator Bart Olson the go-ahead to begin a study using the city’s engineering consulting firm, Engineering Enterprises Inc., because of recent complaints about train horns from residents.

“Over the last few months we’ve been getting a lot of complaints about train horns,” Golinski said.

“I think probably back in October, Bart and I were talking about all the complaints, and the fact that Sugar Grove and Big Rock and Plano all have quiet zones.”

Golinski said economic development was another reason he considered the study.

“I thought it was a good idea to look at it, not just because of the complaints of the residents, but also as a function of the redevelopment of our downtown,” he said.

“Someone mentioned to me that they were looking at maybe doing something downtown with a residential component, and one of the things that was mentioned was that train

horns could be an obstacle. So I told Bart, I said go ahead and do the study just to see what it would take to establish quiet zones.”

But Golinski said it was pointed out to him that the council rejected doing a study just last year.

“I didn’t give it much thought,” he said. “But then it was pointed out to me that in the last (city) legislative session, we voted on this and voted not to move forward on it. It should go back to committee.”

Golinski said the issue would be sent back to the City Council’s Public Works Committee.

“Bart’s going to do some legwork as far as talking to other communities to see when they got their quiet zones, how they went about it, but it’s worth revisiting,” he said.

Council unanimously OKs annual levy

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com The Yorkville City Council unanimously approved the city’s tax levy Tuesday evening, and city officials are asking for no more than they levied last year.

The council approved a levy of $3,101,185, along with a library levy of $692,000.

The council approved the following fund levies as part of the overall levy. Last year’s levy amount is in parenthesis: General Corporate Tax: $1,002,536 ($1,043,200 in 2015); Social Security: $150,000 ($150,000); Police Pension: $966,211 ($825,413); Police Protection Tax: $912,438 ($1,088,449); Audit, $30,000 ($30,000); Liability Insurance Tax: $40,000 ($40,000); Library: $692,000 ($692,000).

The library also collects $760,396 to pay bonds, but that is not included in the annual city levy ordinance. The

bonds were approved via referendum in 2005 to pay for the library expansion.

Aldermen also unanimously approved a resolution instructing the County Clerk to calculate the levies of the city and the library separately in relation to PTELL, or the Property Tax Extension Limitation Law. “As an alternative to keeping the library under the city’s tax umbrella, the city does have the option of instructing the County Clerk to calculate the levies separately for the city and the library,” City Administrator Bart Olson wrote in a memo to aldermen. “This would essentially ‘level the playing field’ by applying the same rules for growth to both entities. In other words, both entities would be subject to PTELL, which limits growth the lessor of CPI or 5 percent plus an additional amount for new construction. This would mean that the total city levy would be flat, and the library would still see an increase

in their levy by 2.20 percent.”

Olson wrote that a resident shouldn’t see much of a change on the city’s portion of their tax bill.

“The property tax bill lists the city and the library as two distinct itemized charges,” Olson wrote. “Assuming the city levies separately from the library, the city’s (capped and uncapped) estimated levy extension is projected as 0 percent change as compared to the 2015 levy year (payable in 2016). The library (capped and uncapped) levy is projected to be 1.55 percent higher than the 2015 levy year extension (payable in 2016). Based on these two statements, the amount that each property owner pays to the city should be similar to the prior year and the amount paid to the library should be approximately $6 higher than the prior year’s tax bill, assuming that their individual property’s EAV does not exceed the overall increase in aggregate EAV (currently projected at 9.95 percent).”

Filing for Ward 1 alderman Monday were Ken Koch, 532 Buckthorn Court, and Bob Allen, 511 Blaine St. Koch currently is the Ward 1 alderman, and will be running for his second full term on the council.

Allen is Yorkville’s former city treasurer.

Filing for Ward 2 alderman Monday was Arden Plocher, 107 E. Washington St. Plocher served on the City Council for one term, between 2007 and 2011.

Filing for Ward 3 alderman Monday was Joel Frieders, 462 Twinleaf Trail. Frieders is running for his second term on the council.

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Yorkville resident John Shaw’s term as a Kendall County Board member, and board chairman, ended this month.

Shaw, 78, had been chairman since 2012 and a board member since 2008.

He plans on running for Kendall Township trustee in the April election.

Shaw, who peppered his County Board meetings with jokes and asides, said the key to being a good board chairman is getting independent people to work together. He has likened the chairmanship to “herding cats.”

“The goal of the chairman of the County Board, how I like to characterize it, is to get enough of the cats that are very independent to go in the same direction so we can get something done,” he said. “It was interesting.”

Shaw said his background in running a limestone business helped him

with being a successful chairman.

“My experience in trying to sell limestone products helped a lot, in that, when you approach people to sell something, a product, you have to listen to them,” he said. “You can’t be dogmatic.”

Shaw said he also previously served as an elected Lisbon Township clerk and a member of the Lisbon-Seward Fire Protection District Board, and said those experiences helped him as a board chairman as well.

John Shaw that it is another layer of unnecessary government. But Shaw said townships serve a purpose, and that it could cost the county money to hire staff, for example, to handle the additional road maintenance.

“People are not aware or don’t stop to think about the fact that every township handles the tax assessment in the township, and I think they figured they would have to hire [in the county Supervisor of Assessments Office] at least

11 or maybe 12 new employees,” he said. “Those could very easily be union employees. Then you’d have to hire, I would say 15 new people to work in the Highway Department. And the further south you get and west, it would be the same way. So I think townships are very necessary.”

Looking back on his time as chairman, Shaw said the attempt to change the County Board’s pay from per diem, or per-day, to a straight annual salary, along with eliminating the mileage reimbursement and health insurance benefits for board members, was a “failed accomplishment.”

“This is an ongoing argument that you should not get rid of per diems because that way you can tell who’s coming to meetings and who isn’t,” he said. “That’s an argument that [former Chairman] Anne [Vickery] and I had.”

Shaw said he didn’t have any regrets from his time as chairman.

“I enjoyed it,” he said.

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com New Kendall County Board Chairman Scott Gryder said this week that the new board will be dealing with a variety of issues, including road projects, union contracts and economic development.

Gryder, who has been on the board since 2012 and was previously a trustee for the Oswego Public Library District and a member of the village of Oswego Plan Commission, was unanimously selected by board members to be chairman at a Dec. 5 organization meeting. The chairman serves a two-year term.

In addition to Gryder, board member Judy Gilmour was named president of the Forest Preserve District Board, replacing Jeff Wehrli, who has retired from the board.

In all, there are three new members joining the board this month: Matt Kellogg of Yorkville, Audra Hendrix of Yorkville and Tony Giles of Oswego. Gryder said there will be some learning to go along with the new leadership and new board members.

“There’s going to be some growing pains, I’d guess, but we’ll try to get it down,” Gryder said.

“Our infrastructure needs, I don’t think we were able to address as quickly as the growth came,” he said.

Gryder said east-west corridors have been addressed, such as Route 34, but now the county needs to look to north-south routes, such as the proposed Wikaduke Trail at the Kendall-Will County line, Orchard Road and Eldamain Road.

“There’s a study that’s going to be done in the fall as to the Wikaduke Trail,” he said. “That’s something that’s been in the 20, 25 years discussion. Right now there’s a centerline recorded by the county, and the village of Oswego shows a different route on their comprehensive plan. So we thought it would make sense for us to decide [on the route]. Should we align with Oswego? That’s the kind of stuff we’re looking at.”

The Eldamain Road bridge over the Fox River between Yorkville and Plano is still in the long-term plans, Gryder said.

The road has seen improvements over the last two years, thanks in part to grant funding via the Kane-Kendall Council of Mayors.

New year should bring push to improve Rt. 47 We praised Kendall County Board member Scott Gryder back in 2014 when he joined with fellow board member Lynn Cullick to lead an effort to jump-start the planning effort to widen traffic-snarled Wolf’s Crossing Road in Oswego. Now, we would like to see Gryder, in his new role as county board chairman, organize a similar effort to spur the Illinois Department of Transportation to expedite the widening of Route 47 between Yorkville and Sugar Grove.

Anyone who regularly drives Route 47 will understand the need to widen the highway from its current two-lane

configuration to four lanes. Traffic backs up in the northbound lanes of the highway every weekday morning, especially at Galena Road and at Route 30 and Jericho Road at the county line.

Meanwhile, traffic is usually a solid, continuous line of slowly creeping vehicles every weekday evening from Sugar Grove south to Yorkville.

The traffic back-ups are, at minimum, a daily annoyance for thousands of county residents, but also pose a public safety hazard and a hindrance to county and local economic development efforts.

It’s interesting to note that con-

tractors for IDOT are now proceeding with the widening of Route 34 between Yorkville and Oswego, even though the traffic volume on the segment of Route 34 set for improvement is significantly less than the traffic on Route 47 between Yorkville and Sugar Grove. According to IDOT’s own Average Daily Traffic (ADT) figures, traffic volume on the segment of Route 34 set for widening ranges from 13,700 to 14,100 vehicles, while the ADT on Route 47 between Yorkville and Sugar Grove ranges from a low of 14,400 to 16,000.

The coming year may prove to be

a good time for county, other local officials and area state and federal lawmakers to take up the more-lanesfor-Route 47 cause.

President-elect Donald Trump has proposed cutting taxes while at the same time borrowing $1 trillion dollars over the next 10 years to fund a nationwide infrastructure improvement program. If that program ever gets off the ground, U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, should work to bring some of those funds to his district to improve Route 47 and, while he’s at it, Route 30 between Route 47 and Route 31 in Montgomery.

It just isn’t right

To the Editor: The proposal to fund the Morgan Creek Drainage District was taxes on each residential and agricultural property. Taxes would be based on the properties’ impact to the district. Residential properties would be taxed at a rate of $10 per lot (a typical lot is about 1/3 acre), agricultural at a rate of $3 per acre. Hmmmm.

Most residential developments have retention and detention ponds to both control and filter water before it’s released into the creek. Developments have wetlands designed to do the same as well as to replenish our aquifer. These retention, detention and wetlands didn’t happen by chance, nor were they free. The developers built these control areas to specifications set forth by our governing bodies and added the cost to the sale price of the lots.

We already paid to protect this district.

Regarding the agricultural property, farmland can typically absorb approximately 3 inches of rain after which it runs off carrying dirt, fertilizers and crop residue. Without the use of on-property grass waterways, the silt and debris collect in the ditches and pipes under the roads and eventually restrict water flow, which in turn can potentially obstruct further drainage. The township and county highway departments often clean these ditches along the roads (our tax dollars at work). These ditches ultimately drain into the creek. In some locations, Morgan Creek has park property on both sides; thus, the park district maintains this portion of the creek with our tax dollars.

The tax proposal for residential property at $10 per 1/3 acre ($30 per acre rate) provides little to no benefit to residential property owners. However, agricultural property owners taxed

Although the $10 per year tax may seem insignificant, it just isn’t right. I attended a couple of hearings on this matter. Although the judge hearing this case initially listened to all individuals present, the attorneys for the district promptly requested that only those with filed motions be heard before the court. To file a motion, research all parties, send each your intentions, file with the court along with $144, and you’re in. That’s 14-plus years of taxes.

They got me.

An added note, the Kendall County Forest Preserve District has already agreed to pay a yearly fee (our money).

Our police are under siege. Protesters can have protests in areas where they do not interfere with foot or vehicle traffic. If they don’t follow the rules, they do six months community service.

Too much to include at once

To the Editor: We all forget things, but a promise to the American people by the incoming president about how he would save jobs at Carrier in Indianapolis, Indiana, should have been a high priority to show his good intent for the future.

He said that he would raise the tariff on American companies sending our manufacturing jobs overseas for cheap labor, then bringing their product back without a consequence. Instead he saved (I use that word loosely) less than half the jobs that were set to go to Mexico by paying off the company with $7 million in tax breaks and who knows what else to its parent company United Technologies who already makes billions off defense contracts. Adding insult to the workers who will still lose their jobs right before Christmas, he said they make air conditioners there when it’s actually furnaces.

So few promises kept, so many tweets to make. If I was a tweeter, I’d remind us how President Obama had saved the auto industry when he came into power

saving one million jobs, not just 800 or so.

When he took office we were bleeding 800,000 jobs a month and on the brink of a depression. Instead he created a momentum of job creation culminating in 74 months of consecutive job growth and lowest unemployment rate in nine years, all while Mitch McConnell and at least seven other Republicans vowed from the night of his inauguration that they would block every proposal he would make despite how it would help the country.

On top of that, he was still able to lower the debt that had been increased

by Bush’s illegal war on Iraq, whose cost was never added to the budget until Obama took office.

It’s bad when the president-elect tweets lies about having won the popular vote over Hillary because of the millions of illegal votes cast in California without any proof, when there is proof of voter suppression and other voter fiddling in Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, just to name a few.

It gets worse when the Republican Speaker of the House Paul Ryan won’t quash those lies. Paul, it appears, will

go along with anything Trump wants because he is so anxious to get rid of our Social Security, Medicare, Obamacare and environmental regulations, just to name a few.

Stay tuned. We are in for some very interesting times ahead.

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com The Illinois House and Senate approved a bill earlier this month that has been characterized as an Exelon bailout by those opposed to it and a job-saving, renewable-energy-promoting bill by those in favor of it.

The Senate passed the bill with a 3218 vote and the House passed it with a 63-38 vote. Gov. Bruce Rauner signed the bill Dec. 7.

Exelon stated in June that it would close two nuclear plants – one in June 2017 in Clinton and one in June 2018 in Cordova – if the state did not act on the legislation.

The legislation, which has been

modified during the past two years, would give $235 million each year to utilities and allow ComEd to increase spending on energy efficiency. Monthly rates will increase for ComEd customers, but the increase will be limited to 25 cents a month.

State Rep. Mark Batinick, R-Plainfield, came out strongly against the bill when given the chance to speak last week on the house floor. Batinick’s district includes a portion of Oswego Township and the village of Oswego.

Batinick said he spent much of his Thanksgiving weekend trying to get information about the bill because it’s been changed so many times. Several changes were made to it on the day it passed.

On principle alone, Batinick said he was against the legislation and that the state budget and essential services need to be the first priority over a bailout of a profitable, multibillion-dollar company.

Batinick said that Illinois ratepayers, with the increase, will be subsidizing electricity for residents of many other states. The power grid that Exelon nuclear plants provide energy for stretches from Texas and Louisiana at the south, all the way north to Manitoba, Canada, he said.

Other Republicans, such as state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, and state Rep. David Welter, R-Morris, voted in favor of the bill. Many employees of Exelon’s Dresden, Braidwood and

LaSalle nuclear stations live in their respective districts. Rezin’s district includes a large portion of southern and western Kendall County.

“My belief is that supporting this legislation will protect small, medium and large energy users greater than doing nothing,” Welter stated in a news release.

Rezin stated in a news release that the legislation will keep nuclear power plants in Cordova and Clinton in operation, saving thousands of jobs and keeping those communities from economic devastation.

Batinick said the bill was the only big piece of legislation the General Assembly has really worked on since a stop-gap budget was approved in June.

45 YHS students named Illinois State Scholars KENDALL COUNTY RECORD A total of 45 members of the Yorkville High School Class of 2017 have been named Illinois State Scholars.

This year’s 45 state scholars is the largest in the school’s history and four more than last year’s prior record of 41 set by the Class of 2016.

As Illinois State Scholars they represent approximately the top ten percent of high school seniors from 765 high schools across the state. State scholars possess strong academic potential and are chosen based on a combination of exemplary ACT or SAT test scores and sixth semester class rank.

Gryder said he recently attended a meeting of the Chicago Metropolitan Area for Planning, of which Kendall County is a member, and that the topic of regional truck permitting was discussed.

“It’s not something that sounds real exciting and it’s not something that people are probably even aware of unless you’re directly involved in the industry,” he said. “But there are 300 municipalities in the Chicagoland region and many of them have different ways that they permit trucks to drive on their roads. So it can be quite a cumbersome process for truckers to navigate through the Chicagoland area. There’s a new study that came out with some recommendations and we’re going to take a look at that. The question is, is there a way for us to streamline that process in the Chicagoland area?

“That’s something that could help our manufacturing here, like Caterpillar or Plano Molding, or whoever else that relies on logistics.”

Gryder said Kendall County will also be hosting a regional economic outlook meeting in March. He said the meeting will include all the County Board chairmen in the Chicago region.

“It’s exciting to be able to showcase Kendall County a little bit,” he said.

Continued from page 3 “That bridge is gonna need to go in there at some point,” he said. “We need to figure out how to make that happen.

“There’s not going to be a bucket full of money from Washington like there used to be so, what do we do and how to we make that happen?”

Regarding Metra commuter rail service, the study on bringing such service out to Kendall County is “in process,” Gryder said.

“I know the Metra staff has spoken with county officials ... just trying to get all the stakeholders’ input on it,” he said. “So I expect that to be coming out in the next probably six months or so. That will provide a roadmap to what really needs to happen if that’s ever going to happen.”

Economic development in areas of the county that aren’t within municipal boundaries is another issue the board will need to tackle, Gryder said.

“The county has historically not been real involved in that,” he said.

“Overall, it’s been more of a village/ city-pushed idea. I don’t know how involved or how deep the county can get.

Some of it is out there cheerleading and supporting our municipalities, but it’s also looking at some of the unincorporated areas as well. We should

Julie Schlichting, an attorney and spokesman for Imperial Investments, said the buildings were part of the former Grainco FS grain operations and gas station. Part of the gas station property still has underground tanks.

Schlichting noted that the city of Yorkville had been citing the buildings for code violations, and that it made more financial sense to knock them down.

“It didn’t make any economic sense to repair those buildings,” she said. “The decision was made, until we have the right future plans to just take them down to the foundations so we don’t have the code issues and no danger issues, anything like that.”

YORKVILLE POLICE REPORTS Domestic battery Yorkville police arrested Moriah A. Dietzman, 21, of the 1400 block of Orchid Street, Yorkville, for domestic battery Dec. 7 at 5:40 a.m. following a fight. Police say a family member called them to the Orchid Street address because two adult females who live at the residence were physically fighting outside of the home; police separated the two and one remained inside the house. The fight ended and a short period of time had gone by when one of the females entered the residence with a box cutter intending on continuing the fight, police said. A male in the house took the box cutter, police

said. The male and one of the females each had one minor cut, police said. No medical attention was needed, police said.

Retail theft Yorkville police cited Joal M. Kunz, 52, of the 1300 block of Washington Street, Marseilles, with a city ordinance violation for retail theft, for stealing earrings worth $39.15 from a business in the 900 block of Erica Lane Dec. 5.

Police say a Ford Taurus driven by Michael Romano of the 4700 block of Lees Court, Oswego, rear-ended a Honda Odessy driven by Sebastine Nwainwn, 1600 W. Touhy Avenue, Chicago, as they were both eastbound on Route 34. Both vehicles were towed, and the Honda driver and their three passengers were transported to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora with injuries, police said. Romano was cited for

failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and operation of an uninsured vehicle.

A total of 25 YHS seniors, selected by a panel of faculty members and a junior Student Council representative, will be recognized throughout the school year in the Record.

Seniors applied for consideration through the high school guidance office.

Co-Sponsored by First National Bank and the Kendall County Record, the $4,000 Student of the Year Scholarship will provide $1,000 each year for four years to the college of the recipient’s choice.

The 2017 Student of the Year will be announced in May. A panel of community leaders will choose the finalists and the winner based on their transcripts, applications and an interview. Nomination and the final selection will be based on scholastic achievement, involvement in school and community, leadership and responsibility, ambition and citizenship. Financial need is not a consideration.

Activities and Honors Maddie is the daughter of Derek and Jackie Dearborn.

A dedicated runner, Maddie was named the Team Captain of both the YHS Varsity Cross Country and Indoor and Outdoor Track teams for the year 2016. She spends several hours a day making sure she’s in tip-top shape for competition, which has earned her a spot as a state qualifier, and a position on the 2013 and 2015 Cross Country State Champion Teams.

“Although being a captain requires sacrifice, the experiences and values I have taken away from it far outweigh the sacrifices,” Maddie said of her hard work.

Off the track, Maddie has been a member of the YHS TRY Club, a Student Ambassador, a member of the Math Team, WYSE Team, KEY Club, National Honor Society and a tutor at the writing center. She has taken classes at Waubonsee Community College to further her education and catapult her engineering dreams.

“From my involvement in these activities, I have gained responsibility, leadership and a new appreciation for volunteers and the hard-working people they help,” she said. “I have learned how to be responsible with my choices and time management, while also being responsible for leading a team.”

Through her participation in all of these activities, Maddie has been afforded to opportunity to volunteer her time to help others. She volunteered at the Chicago Marathon, Operation Santa and Feed My Starving Children with her cross country team. She helped organize a suicide prevention event with the TRY Club and welcomed new students as a YHS Student Ambassador.

This past summer, you might have seen Maddie working in a supervisory role at Foxy’s Ice Cream in Yorkville where she added a job to her list of credentials.

“In the future I hope to be a leader in my career which will require great sacrifice, responsibility and assistance to my coworkers,” she said. “ Working with various groups of people in my athletics and clubs has prepared me to be able to work well with future classmates and coworkers.”

Newark stays on track in conference play Norsemen move to 4-0 in Little Ten with 54-43 win over Hinckley-Big Rock

With starting point guard Meggie Scott benched with her arm in a sling, the Newark girls basketball team made some offensive changes that took Hinckley-Big Rock by surprise.

The Royals (4-6, 3-1 LTC) were able to keep the game within reach through the early part of Friday’s Little Ten Conference meeting, but Newark’s Riane Tomsa stepped up in Scott’s absence to play a key role in the win. Tomsa hit a three-pointer just before halftime on her way to a nine-point night, and the Norsemen shifted gears to a dominant 54-43 win.

“We changed our defense from the first time we played them, and we’re down a point guard right now so we look a little different right now,” Newark coach Barb Scott said.

“I was pleased. Alyssa Gittins gave us great minutes tonight and Riane Tomsa really stepped up.”

Newark (10-1, 4-0) built a 10-2 lead early, but H-BR chipped away at its deficit. Emily Southern (21 points) sparked a 6-0 run in the second quarter to bring the Royals within four, 16-12.

The Yorkville boys bowling team prepares to enter a two-week schedule laps and refocus before the final phase of the season begins in January.

The Foxes close out December at the Rockford tournament on Saturday and will not face competition until they host Ottawa on Jan. 3.

“It’s a good time to gauge what we have and gauge where we are right now in the season,” Yorkville coach Alvin Lewis said.

“Throughout break we practice a few times and keep the guys together and be bowling. It’ll also give us time off to spend time with family and friends. It’s a good time for us. For a lot of my kids, they look at where our regional site is and they go there to bowl a few times, understand the lanes and understand what we’re going to be in

for. It’s also a good time to rest and reassess where we are.”

Yorkville expects to learn its postseason assignments this week, as the IHSA is set to release the information on Dec. 15.

The Foxes dropped their fourth straight dual meet on Monday, as their score of 3,208 wasn’t enough to catch Plainfield Central. Yorkville rolled a 3,521 in a loss to Lockport on Jan. 8, and the Foxes were led by Kyle Krumme (691) and Dante Gashi (618).

“We’re up and down. We have to find the time when we all can do it together,” Lewis said. “We won the Plainfield tournament [Nov. 25] and everyone did their job, encouraged each other and did what they needed to do as a team.

We need to get back to the point where it’s a ‘we’ thing and we’re working together to be successful thing. We’ll get to that point, and we’ll be ready when January rolls around.”

“They came out and gave us a different look than we expected and it was unfortunate that we did not get comfortable at any point until the final minutes when we were getting after it and playing a little more aggressively.

“We played on pins and needles and never got aggressive.”

Gittins helped Newark to a 46-32 lead with 2:40 to play in the game, and Tomsa went 4-for-4 at the foul line in the final frame to help Newark lock down the win.

Yorkville approaches December gauntlet Foxes host elite quad Saturday before 2-day Dvorak tourney begins

While the Yorkville wrestling team may not be competing at full strength, the Foxes will grind out the rest of December with those who are able to step onto the mats. “We’ve been wrestling alright, but we haven’t had our full lineup yet.

We’ve had illnesses and injuries, so we’re competing with who we have out there,� Yorkville coach Jake Oster said. “From 152 up, we’re very solid.

That’s where we score a lot of our wins, and we have some guys down low who can get wins too.�

The Foxes enter the final week of the 2016 schedule with a 3-8 dual meet record and will host St. Rita, defending Class 1A state champion Washington and Class 2A elite Crystal Lake Central. Yorkville will then travel to the Dvorak Tournament Dec. 22-23 to close the month, and will return to the mats on Jan. 5. “It’s a pretty tough weekend, and then we go right to the Dvorak before we can take a break and let some guys heal up,� Oster said. “It’s a pretty brutal first half of the year. Very tough.�

Yorkville had three wrestlers with a perfect 3-0 day. At 132, Joe Roberts won an 18-6 major decision over H-F and won a 5-2 decision over Edwardsville with a 13-0 major over L-W East.

Cale Reeder went 3-0 at 138 pounds, pinning H-F in 3:03 before taking a 9-5 decision over Edwardsville and pinned L-W East in just 49 seconds. At 182, Nick Stemmet went 3-0, pinning H-F in 3:06 and winning by tech fall (16-0) against Edwardsville. He also pinned L-W East in 3:23.

Brady Fisher picked up a pair of wins at 195 by fall to go 2-1 on the day and Julian Vasquez won twice at 120. “Throughout the day we wrestled well,� Oster said. “We were missing three starters who were out sick, but we wrestled well against H-F. Edwardsville was a close one and we had some opportunities, but Edwardsville fought off their back. If we would have had gotten some pins, that would have tightened things up.�

H-BR tried to hold on, with Seth Misukanis (12 points) kicking in four points late in the first quarter to cut the Norsemen lead, 19-11, but Myre (24 points) hit a three-pointer at the close of the period and scored seven more points over the next three minutes to create a 31-13 game. “You try to take timeouts to throw them off their balance, and try and make some adjustments. We were making adjustments, but they’re just so good. They’ve been running that press for years with guys who have been here for years. They’re just so good,� Royals coach Bill Sambrookes said. “We’re going to look at film and find out why we had so many turnovers. Sometimes when you’re on the floor with all that length and pressure, you don’t see the opportunities and film can allow us to look at it from the top.�

Dylan Patrick (18 points) knocked down a long jumper out of a H-BR timeout to help continue a 10-0 run as Newark took a 45-15 lead and led by 29 points at halftime. Beau Brown (18 points) had a strong third quarter with six points, and Patrick converted on a three-point play in the fourth quarter to give Newark a 77-44 lead as the Norsemen cleared its bench with substitutions in the final six minutes.

Newark will continue LTC play at LaMoille on Friday before hosting a state-ranked Annawan squad that holds the No. 3 slot in Class 1A polls.

That non-conference game will lead Newark into the Plano Christmas Classic, which takes place Dec. 26-30. “We have high hopes for this year,� Tollefson said. “We have some big goals.�

Sycamore girls basketball coach Adam Wickness wanted to throw something different at Yorkville, and for almost three quarters it worked.

Eventually, the Foxes figured out the 2-3 zone of the Spartans and went on an 18-5 run in a 54-47 win. “I thought we came out in the first half and executed our game plan exactly the way we drew it up,� Wickness said. “We knew this was a talented Yorkville team and we wanted to limit what they could do inside.�

That meant a 2-3 zone to try to limit the inside presence of the 6-foot, 1-inch Katie Nolan and the 6-0 Lindsay Harrison. For most of the first three quarters, the Spartans (6-3 overall, 1-2 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) kept the Foxes (8-1, 3-0) at bay.

They led as much as six in the third quarter, but after Darely Duarte hit a jumper with 2:08 left in the frame, Yorkville responded by scoring eight straight to close the quarter. The Foxes never trailed again.

The Spartans trailed 46-41 in the final 3 minutes when Kate Majerus came up with a steal as they looked to make it a one-possession game. But after Taryn Mathey missed a 3-pointer – the Spartans were 0 for 18 from beyond the arc to finish the game – Hayley Farren connected on a 3-pointer to expand the lead back to eight. Sycamore didn’t get within five the rest of the way. “You could hear us just take a big breath and relax after that,� Yorkville coach Kim Wensits said. “It was get-

ting tense, but that kind of changed a lot. And it was good to see Hayley make that shot. She’s missed a long stretch – this was her first game of the year.

So for her to come back and contribute five big points is great to see.�

Wensits said this was the first zone the Foxes have seen for the length of a game, adding that she expected the Spartans to switch out of late. Wickness said he somewhat second-guessed himself about staying in the zone for too long.

It was effective early. After Yorkville built up a 13-7 lead in the first, Sycamore scored nine straight to take the lead. They’d hold the lead until the run by the Foxes to close the third quarter.

One of the players to take advantage of the zone, Wensits said, was 5-foot-1 Audrey Macciomei. She hit the bucket that drew the Foxes to within 36-34 late in the third, assisted on the tying bucket, and hit the 3-pointer on the next possession that put Yorkville ahead for good.

Kylie Fuererbach led all scorers with 21 points. The 5-foot-11 freshman was effective driving into the lane for layups even against the large Yorkville defense. Mathey led the Spartans with six rebounds.

Lauren Daffenberg led the Foxes with 15 points, Harrison scored 12 and Nolan 11 to go with a game-high eight rebounds.

The Foxes will begin play in the Ottawa Christmas Classic on Saturday, opening with a 10:30 a.m. game against LaSalle-Peru before facing Newark at 4:30 p.m.

NEWEST SCORING THREAT Cam Myre knocks down game-high 24 points in win for Norsemen

The 6-foot-7 Norsemen starting center is averaging 18.4 points per game – a stark contrast after averaging 9.6 ppg as a junior – Myre got to work early in Friday’s Little Ten Conference game against visiting Hinckley-Big Rock.

Myre scored the first two baskets of the game and had 20 points before halftime as Newark (6-1, 2-0 LTC) built a sizeable lead on the Royals (1-6, 0-2) and cruised to an 81-54 win.

“Cam is just playing in-

credible. He’s on fire,” Newark coach Rick Tollefson said.

“It’s nice to know that we’ve got a kid who’s shooting, lately, about 75 percent. It’s very, very nice.

“He’s grown 11 inches since his freshman year. Last year we had the two seniors in the middle, so that eliminated some of the opportunities for him, but now he’s court-wide.

He’s going inside, he’s going outside – he’s just done a lot.

As a player, his confidence has developed.”

Newark quickly turned a 6-4 lead into an untouchable advantage in the first half.
