KENDALL COUNTY RECORD Yorkville Mayor Gary Golinski is seeking applications from Yorkville residents in Ward 2 to serve on the City Council as an appointed alderman through the end of April.

The person would temporarily replace Alderman Larry Kot, who is resigning at the end of this month and whose term in office ends in April.

According to city officials, to be eligible to serve on the City Council, applicants must meet the following criteria: be a registered voter of the city, have resided within the municipal boundaries of the city of Yorkville for at least

one year preceding the date of appointment, and must not owe the city any money, nor have been convicted in any court of any infamous crime, bribery, perjury Larry Kot or other felony.

The City Council consists of the mayor and eight aldermen who represent the four wards within the city. In addition to making policy, the City Council is responsible for approving the budget, determining the tax levy, setting goals and formulating long-term policies that shape the city’s public function. Legion Auxiliary announces Americanism Essay Contest KENDALL COUNTY RECORD The subject and title of the 2017 American Legion Auxiliary Americanism Essay Contest is “What the American Flag Means to Me.” The American Legion Department of Illinois, the American Legion Auxiliary, and Sons of the American Legion are co-sponsors of the contest. Its purpose is to aid the schools of Illinois in the teaching of Americanism and good citizenship.

The contest is divided into the following three classes: Class I for seventh and eighth grades, Class II for ninth and 10th grades, and Class III for 11th and 12th grades.

All Illinois students in the seventh and eighth grades and junior and senior high school are invited to participate in this contest. All contestants must be a lawful permanent resident of the United States of America and a bona fide student in a junior or senior high school. Home-schooled students will be competing at their own grade level according to age. Eligible participants in the contest shall be citizens or lawful permanent residents of the United States. Competition will be on a Post, Unit or Squadron level and continue on to the Auxiliary District and Division level.

Division 1st place winners in each class will compete for the following State Awards.

CLASS III: First place $1,200 scholarship; second place $700 scholarship; third place $400 scholarship; fourth place $375 scholarship; fifth place $300 scholarship.

CLASS II: First place $200 cash award; second place $175 cash award; third place $150 cash award; fourth place $125 cash award; fifth place $100 cash award.

The Oswego Presbyterian Church will provide polystyrene/Styrofoam recycling for the holidays in an effort to keep the popular packing materials out of landfills.

As investigation goes on, clients are served, finances stay stable

Law enforcement sources estimated that between $150,000 and $200,000 was taken from the pantry, but a criminal investigation is still ongoing and Witek said pantry officials are still sorting through documents to determine how much was missing.

A week after the raid, the former executive director of the pantry, Maria Spaeth, and the pantry’s treasurer, Maria’s husband Kenneth Spaeth, both of Yorkville, resigned from their positions at the pantry. On June 21, Maria Spaeth was found dead in her vacation home in Lake Holiday of a prescription drug overdose, according to DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Miller.

A Kendall County judge appointed a special prosecutor to the case in July.

State’s Attorney Eric Weis, who previously served on the pantry’s board, said he could be called as a witness in the case. In September, the Yorkville police handed over their completed investigation to Charles Colburn of the Illinois Office of the State’s Attorneys Appellate Prosecutor’s Special Prosecution Unit.

No criminal charges have been filed in the case.

Asked for any progress on the case this week, Colburn wrote in an email,

“Nothing I can release at this time.”

Grant Wegner of Yorkville, an attorney and retired judge who sits on the food pantry board, has been acting as legal counsel and liaison between the pantry board and Colburn, Witek said. “[Wegner] has been in close contact with the special prosecutor, and my understanding is it’s on his list of to-dos, and he’s just got a lot of to-dos,” Witek said. “So he’s getting through the process but he’s not there yet.”

Wegner said the police and prosecutors had all of the organization’s documents, which made it hard for them to begin building a case for civil litigation.

“What initially happened was they went in with a search warrant and took all of our records and documents,” he said. “So before we could pursue any other avenues of recovery, we had to get access to that. So, Colburn and I worked out an agreed court order, where we have some material they can turn over to us and then there are two other boxes of material that they’re going to hold onto because they have evidentiary value, but we’ll have access, we can look at them and things of that sort.”

Six months after Yorkville police searched the offices of the Kendall County Food Pantry in Yorkville as part of a theft investigation, leaders at the renamed Kendall County Community Food Pantry say they are slowly but surely picking up the pieces.

During a recent distribution day at the pantry, located at 208 Beaver Street in Yorkville’s Fox Industrial Park, families and individuals crowded into a waiting area and then patiently browsed the many food staples available, including meat and produce donated by local grocery stores and other businesses.

Greg Witek, the Little Rock-Fox Fire Protection District fire chief and KenCom dispatch executive board chairman who was named chairman of the new food pantry board when the new board and leadership took over Aug. 11, said 300 to 350 families representing between 900 and 1,200 households walk through the pantry’s doors every month in need of everyday items.

Witek said the issues that occurred six months ago did not impact the clients of the pantry.

“Throughout the entire process, if they didn’t read the papers, they would not know anything had happened,” he said. “So even in the darkest days when there was red ink in the checkbook and the volunteers were barely getting by, they were here every Thursday and the clients came and got food and it all worked out.”

“The third side of it is completely up to Colburn, and if they do have some criminal charges that develop, obviously one of the things that we’ll be pushing for in any kind of plea agreement or sentencing would be that we get some restitution money,” he said.

However, he said it’s “going to take us some time to figure out who and when and how.”

Wegner said the pantry officials have no estimates right now of how much was stolen, just “ideas,” but that there’s “definitely enough to pursue, I can tell you that.”

Wegner said he understands why the criminal investigation has taken so long, noting that the appellate prosecutor’s office covers cases all over the state when a local prosecutor cannot take the case. He said Colburn has “a lot on his plate, and I get that.”

“Colburn’s all over the state; I get it, it takes a bit longer than if it was local,” he said. “Hopefully they’ll move forward on it and we’ll see what happens.”

Witek said the volunteers stuck with the pantry even during the controversies. He said that according to pantry Director Tandy Pinter, volunteer inquiries through its new website, including those who want to do temporary volunteer shifts, have been more than steady.

“There is a record high in terms of people who want to help,” he said.

Witek said church groups, school groups and others will take temporary shifts, and then there are those who come to the pantry and just say they want to help. He gave the example of a 50-something couple who stopped in the pantry in July.

“He had recently retired and they live in Oswego, and said we want to help, and they have been here every single Thursday like clockwork since the beginning of July,” he said. “They’re a part of the family now.”

Make office security measures a priority The Kendall County clerk and treasurer and their respective office staffs have asked for more security measures for their offices at the County Office Building at 111 W. Fox St. in downtown Yorkville.

As our news editor Tony Scott reported last week, county board members discussed the request during a meeting last month. Robert “H.D.” Davidson, chairman of the board’s Facilities Management Committee, told his board colleagues that County Clerk Debbie Gillette and County Treasurer Jill Ferko have requested the increased security measures following some incidents with the public in their respective offices that made them “a little uncomfortable.”

discussed potential remedies, including a committee recommendation to install glass shields across counters in the two offices. Another proposal calls for the installation of metal detectors or X-ray machines at entrances to the building and the hiring of security guards. The board, however, made no final decision.

We believe new County Board Chairman Scott Gryder and the newly sworn-in board should make improving security at the county office building an immediate priority. The board should have its newly reconstituted Facilities Management Committee work with the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office to develop a workable and economically feasible plan to boost security in the 41-year-old building and

present that plan to the board for final action within the next few months.

The committee should carefully examine the possible use of metal detectors, panic alarms and security guards. While full-time security guards might prove cost-prohibitive, perhaps they could be utilized at select times of the year, such as when property tax bills are due in June and September or when new property assessments are published.

We would remind the board, too, that it would be helpful to find out how other area counties have dealt with the need for increased security in recent years. For example, what, if any, extra security measures have been taken at county offices in Kane, DeKalb, LaSalle and Grundy counties and at what

cost? Assuming that those counties have beefed up their security, have they found it effective and can any of the ideas work here? Which measures are ineffective and should be avoided?

The preamble to the Constitution states that “we the people” are the government. But a succession of national leaders dating back to Ronald Reagan has championed the idea that government is not the solution to our problem but the problem itself. Sadly we have seen the animus and cynicism such comments foster toward the federal government trickle down from Washington, D.C., to government at the local level. In a difficult time for our nation, security measures at the county office building have become a necessary precaution.

How grain shipments shaped Chicago and St. Louis This year’s harvest season is largely ended, but truckloads of grain still stream from area farms to grain elevators or directly to Illinois River terminals as the end of the crop goes to market.

This “Golden Stream,” as author William Cronon described it, moves corn and soybeans from field to temporary storage to market in a smooth flow that is a marvel of efficiency, one that would astonish our pioneer farmer ancestors.

In the first half of the 19th century, grain traveled to market in burlap bags and cloth sacks. Before it could be shipped off the farm, corn had to be shelled, and small grains – oats, wheat, rye, and barley – had to be threshed (removed from the stalks) and winnowed to separate the grain from the chaff. Then it was placed in cloth sacks, which were sewn shut, loaded aboard wagons and hauled to the nearest market.

Before railroads pushed west of Chicago to the Fox Valley in the late 1840s, that meant taking horse-drawn wagonloads of full grain sacks over the terrible roads of the era to the South Water Street market. There it was inspected and stored in warehouses until it was sold, either to a local user or to be loaded aboard a ship and sent to the eastern markets.

Farmers nearer to the Illinois River hauled their wagonloads of bulging grain sacks over to the Illinois River, where it could be stored in warehous-

In 1831, a young Abraham Lincoln signed on as a crewman to sail a flatboat owned by New Salem merchant Denton Offutt down the Sangamon River to the Illinois and then on to New Orleans.

Among the flatboat’s cargo were “bags of corn.”

At each point on its journey from northern Illinois to grain markets, either south to St. Louis or New Orleans, or east to New York, sacks of grain had to be handled numerous times, making grain shipment an extremely labor-intensive business.

Individual sacks had to be moved from farm to wagon to Chicago or St. Louis warehouse to steamboat or flatboat to New Orleans or Buffalo warehouse to sailing ship or Erie Canal boat to the grain’s final destination, where it had to be unloaded yet again.

And then the railroads arrived, along with drastic effects, both positive and negative, on Chicago and St. Louis. St. Louis – the Gateway to the West – knew its prominence depended on its access to the Mississippi River’s steamboat traffic. Hundreds

The city’s merchants quickly realized that railroads were antithetical to steamboat shipping on which the

city relied. They were so opposed to railroads, in fact, that they forbade bridging the river at their city. As a result, the first bridge across the Mississippi was at Rock Island, which was immediately opposed in court by steamboat interests. Successfully

By its opposition to a rail link with the east coupled with geographic problems that didn’t affect Chicago plus rapid advances in grain shipping technology, St. Louis was quickly surpassed as a major grain shipping point.

The main advance in technology that had the biggest impact on grain shipment was the invention of practical grain elevators, which allowed grain to be removed from all those sacks, slashing labor costs. Joseph Dart, a Buffalo, New York, warehouse owner, is credited with inventing the grain elevator in 1842. Essentially, the

range of abilities, sexual orientation, gender identity, financial means, education and political perspective.

To the Editor: The holiday season is here. There’s no better way to celebrate this special time of year than attending the annual Yorkville High School Music Department’s Christmas “Prism” Concert, held this past weekend. The YHS Prism Concert has become a Yorkville holiday tradition, a “must attend family event.”

Now “one of the hottest tickets in town,” [it draws] more public attendance than a home-1st round, Class 6A high school football game. Making the IHSA football playoffs is a big deal here. Yet, the CUSD 115 music department is the best kept secret in our town.

This year, the eighth annual Prism Concert added yet another performance, its fourth performance session, held last Friday night. The CUSD 115 music department is under the direction of department chairman Victor Anderson, who continues to produce excellence. Victor Anderson is also our YHS band director.

Victor was a young musician who grew up in the Fox Valley, chased his dream of performing and was found teaching in Galesburg. Victor was recruited over a decade ago to come to Yorkville and be great.

He was given the opportunity to build a meaningful music department, under his guidance; Victor earned the unofficial title of being the YHS “Music Man.” You may not fully know about our old CUSD 115 music department, but can relate to this old movie about a gifted promoter.

Many of Victor’s trombone students have never seen that movie, but know the drill.

Over these past five years, one of Victor’s YHS bands has consistently been judged to be the best in the state by his music educator (Illinois Music Educators Association) peers, an equivalent to a state championship. Like our YHS girls cross country team repeating these past few years, but only in the field of music.

Routinely we now have music students who excel, who attain IMEA recognition for being one of the most accomplished music performers in the state in their field, either playing their chosen instrument or using the voice God gave them to sing.

Currently there are 1,700+ music students in CUSD 115; these music kids

commercial grain elevator was a collection of vertical grain bins in which grain of various kinds and quality could be separately stored outside of sacks until shipment. The grain was elevated using steam power to the upper bins, where gravity allowed it to flow through chutes aboard anything from canal boats to rail cars.

While the grain elevator was invented in Buffalo, it was really perfected in Chicago.

There, huge grain elevators were quickly built along the Chicago River on South Water Street. Grain from Chicago’s hinterland was transported to the elevators by wagon, rail, and canal boat, where it was graded by quality and then loaded into the elevated bins, all by machinery instead of on the backs of stevedores.

Which is where geography comes in. Because the Chicago River and Lake Michigan are both pretty much

immune to floods, those huge grain elevators could be built right on the riverbank. The Mississippi floods on a regular basis, meaning elevators at St. Louis could not be built along the river or they’d be flooded one or more times every year. Geography, coupled with the city’s disdain for railroads, meant St. Louis was quickly supplanted as a major grain transshipment point. Cut off from rail lines heading east, the rest of its economy was harmed, too.

Meanwhile, Chicago’s economy, based on roads, canals, railroads and lake shipping exploded, making it the premier city in the nation’s Middle West.

Thanks to its extensive transportation web, Chicago’s hinterland underwent a massive expansion that, in economic terms at least, eventually took in entire states including Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa. The

routinely are also some of our most gifted academic learners and leaders. These kids learn early on the concept of hard work, through practicing, and then learn to perform under pressure. It just gets better each year. For a decade Yorkville Music Booster parent volunteers have performed meaningful supporting work which will endure for many lifetimes.

Dems play the blame game

To the Editor: Now that the election is over it’s amusing watching the Dems play the blame game. They just cannot seem to bring themselves to accept that this election was not only about the messenger but the message.

They have preached their “everything is free from the government” and “only the left knows best what is good for the country” so much that they have lost touch with the working class that is paying for their “everything is free” nonsense.

When the left and their idol Obama hijacked the party and the Dems started losing governorships and state legislatures they didn’t make the connection.

Now that they have lost the U.S. House and U.S. Senate and finally the White House they still don’t realize it’s the message. They want to blame everyone but themselves and their agenda. The only argument that they seem to be able to • Continued on page 6

If you’re this kind of person and find yourself sitting around waiting for your next heroes to come along, then my simple advice to you would be to let these heroes fulfill their sworn duty without your constant criticism, without your protest, without your persecution or prosecution before the facts are known, and most certainly without taking their lives from them while they’re having lunch in their squad car.

Unless you’re fully ready to replace them, swear their oath, accept the consequences of that oath, deal with the danger they face every waking moment, or leave the comfort of your sideline existence and join them in their fight, then I politely ask you to stop labeling them as inherently and systematically racist on the basis that a few bad people are able to slip into their ranks from time to time.

I would suggest that you leave the womb of your group think, and start using your own two eyes to see what they see every day. See oppression where it really exists. See the places where human life has no value and where human dignity is reserved only to the powerful. Until you’ve actually seen and done these things, you have no standing for your outrage. You should just remain on the sidelines and quietly wait for them to do what needs to be done to keep you free and safe.

The Kendall County Board unanimously chose Scott Gryder of Oswego as its chairman Monday evening during an organizational meeting at the county’s Historic Courthouse in Yorkville.

In addition to Gryder being named chairman, replacing former Chairman John Shaw, newly elected and re-elected board members were sworn into office by Judge Melissa Barnhart.

New board members Matt Kellogg of Yorkville, Tony Giles of Oswego and Audra Hendrix of Yorkville, as well as board member John Purcell of Yorkville, were sworn into office. New Coroner Jacquie Purcell was sworn into office last Wednesday along with State’s Attorney Eric Weis and Circuit Court Clerk Robyn Ingemunson.

Also during Monday’s meeting, board member Lynn Cullick was chosen unanimously as the board’s vice chairman. Board member Judy Gilmour was chosen as the Forest Preserve District president, Matthew Prochaska as the district vice president, and Eliz-

There is still pain from the incidents, however, Witek said.

“We’ve got 91 volunteers who are all hurting from that whole process,” he said.

Witek said that Maria Spaeth did good work in the county, but that there is a “black mark” on that work now.

“No doubt, over the course of almost 30 years she did some wonderful things for the county, no doubt, and I never want to take that away from her,” he said. “It doesn’t make the bad any less bad. Wonderful stuff got done, but unfortunately it’s got a black mark on it.”

When reached via cellphone this week, Kenneth Spaeth said he could not comment on the investigation or other aspects of the case, but that he wished the organization well.

“All I can say is that I wish nothing but the best for the food pantry,” he said. “It’s just a terrific organization, and I wish nothing but the best for the people that are running it as well as for the patrons. That was something that was near and dear to Maria’s heart and I know she’d want to see it prosper and continue on without her.”

A Kendall County zoning panel has declined to recommend approval of a special use for a shooting range in the southern part of the county.

Landowner Robert Delaney has requested turning his property at 16502 Church Road in Lisbon Township into a full-time gun range called Dirt Road Range, requiring a special use zoning from the county. The land is currently zoned for agricultural use, according to county documents.

The county’s Regional Plan Commission voted 3-2 at a Nov. 30 meeting against recommending approval of the zoning to the County Board. Commission members Tom Casey, Roger Bledsoe and Claire Wilson voted against recommending approval, while members Larry Nelson and Budd Wormley voted in favor of approval. Chairman Bill Ashton voted “present.”

The proposal will now go before a special use hearing officer on March 27 at 7 p.m. Following that process, the proposal will be reviewed by the County Board’s Planning, Building and Zoning Committee and then the full county board.

The proposal faced fierce opposition by neighbors at a July 27 commission meeting. The issue was continued, changes were made to the proposal and it

locked, and Kramer suggested that the best way to access the site is using a private drive that is shared with the landowner to the west of the shooting range property. That access would be initially gravel, but the commission recommended it be tar and chip or hard surface.

Kramer said they looked into going east, but that it’s “not in the picture” as they would have to get easement permission from ComEd. It would be “cost prohibitive” to build a road all the way to Church Road to the west, Kramer said.

Greg Peterson, the landowner to the west of the property, told the commission that he did not want a hard surface road on his property. Peterson pointed out that Delaney owns the property north of his and could use that to access Church Road.

“What they wanna do is use my driveway,” Peterson said.

Tim Wallace, a Whitewillow Road resident and the chief of the Lisbon-Seward Fire Protection District, said the district requested the property have a Knox Box, which is a master key system used by fire departments to gain entry to a property during an emergency. He said they also requested fire extinguishers on the property, and an annual fire inspection.

Wallace said he has a business on Whitewillow Road, and has had customers visiting his business on Saturdays who ask about the noise coming from the firing range property.

Kramer said nothing the fire department asked for was “unreasonable.” He said there would also be a defibrillator on site.

Yorkville City Council OKs street improvement plan

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Yorkville aldermen recently unanimously approved an updated five-year street improvement plan.

The Road to Better Roads program includes improvements to streets as well as parking lots over the next five years.

Streets included in the program for next year include: Madison Court; Madison Street, from the west end of the street to Morgan Street; South Main Street, from West Van Emmon Street to West Hydraulic Avenue, and from South Bridge Street to West Ridge Street; Washington Street, from West Morgan Street to South Main Street; Pavilion Road, from Fox Road to the city limit; East Ridge Street, from the east end to Mill Street; and Tower Lane from Somonauk Street to

the city public works lot.

Parking lots included in next year’s program include paving the lots at City Hall and at the Public Works Department building, and sealing and striping the lots at the Beecher Center, Yorkville Public Library, Parks and Recreation building, and Bridge Park. Paving the Riverfront Park parking lot and the east alley parking lot are also included, and are eligible for downtown TIF district funds, according to information from Brad Sanderson, the city’s engineering consultant with Engineering Enterprises Inc. Sanderson said the city aims to bid the projects by March and that construction is generally performed between May and the end of September.

Depression is common in seniors and most of the elderly population that suffers from it unfortunately doesn’t share that information with others.

The Yorkville CUSD 115 Board of Education were recognized during American Education Week.

District 115 board members recognized for leadership KENDALL COUNTY RECORD Individuals who volunteer to serve on boards of education dedicate hundreds of hours of their personal time working to ensure the students who live in their community receive a proper education. In appreciation of their unselfish, and too often unrecognized, efforts, Yorkville CUSD 115 is joining communities throughout the state to say “thank you” to local school board members during American Education Week and recognize these public servants for their commitment and contributions to public education.

Boards of Education consist of seven school district residents elected to serve four-year terms without pay.

Yorkville CUSD 115 Board of Education members are: Dr. Robert Brenart, Dr. Lynn Burks, Dave Dockstader, Dean Fisher, Tom Kozlowicz, Jason Senffner and Ashley Shields.

Each school board member is responsible to comply with mandatory training laws, review hundreds of educational documents and proposals, adopt goals and policies to meet state and local requirements, ensure the

district has the necessary resources to pursue its goals, and monitor the district’s performance so students remain on track for college or careers.

“Board of education members must make tough decisions that affect not only our school, but the entire community,” said Yorkville District 115 Superintendent Timothy Shimp. “Their choices impact our daily lives and help our community grow and thrive.”

As community trustees for the schools, District 115 school board members have oversight of an annual budget of approximately $80 million, approximately 6,000 students in pre-kindergarten through high school, more than 850 employees and nine schools.

“Board members give up their personal and family time to advocate for greater student opportunities, and to provide local governance to our educational system. Through their dedication and ongoing support for school community, the District 115 Board of Education models servant leadership, and sacrifice a great deal on behalf of the community, staff and students,” Shimp said.

Scoring a goal in soccer is one of the most difficult things to do in sports.

That’s nothing compared to building a robot from scratch.

Yorkville High School senior Spencer Snider, who helped the Foxes compile an impressive 15-2-2 record on the soccer field this fall, was recognized at the Nov. 21 Board of Education meeting for creating a BB-8 robot from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”

“It actually kind of started off as a joke,” Snider said. “I saw the trailer for the movie and was intrigued by the design of it and thought to myself that I could build something like that. I talked to some of my friends and said I bet I could make one of those and then I became obsessed with doing it.”

With students from Circle Center Grade School attending the meeting as part of the Heart of the Fox monthly recognition, Snider had a great audience to show his creation in action.

Snider estimates that he spent over 1,000 hours to complete his project, which he began working on in the summer of 2014.

He finished the first version of BB-8 the day before the movie premiered.

He then missed a day of school and worked on it for 17 hours straight to complete it.

“It was around 2 in the morning and I had tears of joy that I finished it,” he said. “It was such a good feeling.”

He’s been accepted at Iowa State and is looking into a mechanical engineering program.

What one would be surprised to learn is that he’s not a way-out-there Star Wars fanatic.

“A friend of mine got me into it a bit,” he said. “I didn’t know much about it, but there was something about the robot that got my attention, but I do like Star Wars.”

Perhaps as amazing of an accomplishment as it was to create something like the BB-8 is that he found the time to do it.

Snider continues to keep extremely busy. He’s a talented trumpeter and was a captain on the soccer team.

Andrew Johnson, who coached him in soccer as a freshman, junior and this past fall, has been extremely impressed with his accomplishments.

“Spencer is an outstanding young man on the field, in the classroom, as a leader, and as a teammate and friend,” Johnson said. “His character is the best thing about him because he was raised well and displays that character at all times for others to see.”

On the subject of the difficulty of scoring, Snider didn’t have many opportunities as the anchor of a defense that only surrendered 19 goals after giving up 51 the year before when he was injured.

During the final regular season game against Morris, Johnson designed a handful of corner kick plays to set up Snider with some opportunities and he scored on the first chance he had.

“For some reason, I celebrated that goal more than perhaps any other goal I can think of,” Johnson said.

“That just goes to show you what I think of that kid.”

He plans to study Business Management at an undetermined university.

A total of 25 YHS seniors, selected by a panel of faculty members and a junior Student Council representative, will be recognized throughout the school year in the Record.

Seniors applied for consideration through the high school guidance office.

Co-Sponsored by First National Bank and the Kendall County Record, the $4,000 Student of the Year Scholarship will provide $1,000 each year for four years to the college of the recipient’s choice.

The 2017 Student of the Year will be announced in May. A panel of community leaders will choose the finalists and the winner based on their transcripts, applications and an interview. Nomination and the final selection will be based on scholastic achievement, involvement in school and community, leadership and responsibility, ambition and citizenship. Financial need is not a consideration.

Activities and Honors Chase is the son of Rod and Sandy Aulis.

During his four years at YHS, he has participated in more than 10 different clubs and activities, in addition to his rigorous academic work schedule of AP and honors classes.

“I would say I have sacrificed a majority of my time to Yorkville High School, but sacrificed is the wrong word because I have loved every second of it,” Chase said. “I have instead donated my time to the place that is home to so many great teachers and role models I look up to.”

As class president, a member of the National Honor Society, the Student Council, the football team, the tennis team, and many additional clubs, Chase said he knows what it takes to persevere. He is a member of T.A.L.K, Student Advisory Board, T.R.Y, and the school’s writing center.

“It takes a lot of commitment to not give up or fold in,” he said. “I chose to be so committed because I love being part of a bigger picture.”

On winter days, Chase arrives to school at 5 a.m. for weightlifting. He said he doesn’t leave until 9 p.m. after robotic club.

He is a tutor, who spends time helping other students fulfill their academic goals. He helped organize the school’s blood drive, and works at Raging Waves in the summer.

“My goal at YHS was to create a path that would propel me into a four-year university and I could grow up to be running my own business or be higherup at a corporate company,” he said. “High school has been the perfect precursor to college and my business career.”

Through his activities and involvement, Chase said he’s learned to ask for help, prioritize his efforts, and become self-sufficient.

“The most important thing high school has taught me about my future is that if you do not try something you will never know if you like it,” he said. “I have tried so many different things in the past four years and found out what makes me tick.”

Newark Varsity: The Norsemen improved to 8-1 with a 53-33 win over Ottawa Marquette on Saturday. One night earlier, Newark topped Kirkland Hiawatha 76-27. Jasmine Mitchell led with 21 points, Alyssa Schofield had 16 points and Alyssa Gittins added 10 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.

Meggie Scott led the Norsemen from the point with eight points and 17 assists.

Yorkville Sophomore: The Foxes defeated Plano 55-38 in a non-conference game on Saturday. Yorkville started the game with a 19-point first quarter and never trailed from the game’s first basket. Haylee Reyes had game scoring honors with 14 points and also contributed six rebounds. Olivia Ross added 10 points and Jayshawna Smith had a double double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Naya Campbell and Delaney Seeman each dished out four assists.

Delaney made six steals out of a team total of 24. The win improved the team record to 6-1.

Yorkville defeated Kaneland 43-38 on Dec. 1. The Knights held a 24-23 half-

time lead, but the Foxes put together their final push, outscoring the Knights 12-4 down the stretch. Olivia Ross hit a three-pointer and a conventional field goal, Naya Campball hit a three-point bomb and Jayshawna Smith put in a field goal off a rebound for a 41-38 lead.

Olivia made 2 free throws for insurance and the Foxes held on. Ross was high scorer with 13 points and had 4 steals.

Claudia Grunwald scored 10 points.

Yorkville Freshman: The Lady Foxes had a hard fought battle against Lasalle-­ Peru, winning 47-44. When it came down to it, the Lady Foxes made their free throws and some key shots down the stretch to secure the win. Dana Malinowski and Lexi Meyer led the Lady Foxes with 11 points each. Halle Jones was right behind them with 10 and Ava Hanson had six.

BOYS BOWLING

Yorkville Varsity: The Foxes fell to Plainfield South on Dec. 1, 3,381-3,639.

The Foxes were led by Zachary Bianchi (645), Evan Jaros (629), and Kyle Krumme (605). With a score of 3,243, Yorkville defeated DeKalb by 14 pins on Nov. 29. The Foxes were led by Zachary Bianchi (599).

The Norsemen (5-0) opened Little Ten Conference play on Friday with a 33-point win over Leland-Earlville, 7542. Cameron Myre hit nine of 10 from the field, including 5 of 6 from downtown to score a game-high 25 points.

He also had four steals, four blocked shots and three boards. Steve McGrath chipped in 15 points while have five assists and five steals. Will Clausel had eight points, but tossed 9 assists and corralled eight rebounds.

Yorkville Christian: The Mustangs opened the season with an 0-6 start, falling to defending Class 2A state champion St. Joseph-Ogden, 102-49 on Friday at Olivet Nazarene University. Yorkville Christian is currently without center Dimitri Milakis and guard Jadon Pryor (ankle sprain). Noah Lewis led the team with a school record 30 points and Austin Wisniowicz followed with 19.

On Saturday, Yorkville Christian lost to Universal School (Bridgeview), 61-57.

Lewis led with 27 points and Christian Sovern chipped in with 15, including five three-pointers.

Parkview Christian: Parkview Christian lost two Illinois Christian Confer-

ence games last week. On Nov. 28, the Falcons lost to Cornerstone Christian from Sycamore by a score of 56-53. Austin West contributed 23 points and nine rebounds while Stephen Brennwald added nine rebounds and seven assists. On Dec. 1, Parkview journeyed to Kankakee to play Kankakee Trinity.

They lost a hard-fought battle by a score of 71-64. Three Falcons scored nearly all of the points with Jake Angelo leading the way with 25 and Austin West and Josiah Finnestad each adding 18.

Yorkville Sophomore: The Foxes picked up a dramatic 76-72 win over visiting Plano in four overtimes last Saturday. Jimmy Eberhart came up big beyond the arc in multiple overtime periods for the Foxes and Mason Klass led the way with 26 points as Yorkville improved to 6-0 with the win. Plano tied the game at 64 points at the end of the third overtime, but Yorkville hit a three-pointer and later was fouled on a successful layup to add three more points and take a 72-70 lead on the way to a victory.

Yorkville Freshman: The Foxes came out to an energetic first half and never looked back, winning 55-47 over Plano.

Yorkville looks for big gain at Strikefest

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com After rolling some impressive scores in the early weeks of the season, the Yorkville girls bowling team will find out just how it stacks up against the state’s elite at Plainfield North’s Strikefest Invite at Town and Country Lanes in Joliet on Saturday.

The Foxes head into the prestigious tournament after a big start to December that includes a runner-up finish at Joliet West’s Grind Fest – also held at Town and Country Lanes – and a Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference win over Kaneland.

Last Saturday, Yorkville finished second behind the efforts of Hannah Jaros, Kelsey Fairless, Emma Lacey, Allison Nape and Alyah Palomino, who all medaled.

“I always see consistency with Hannah; she’s our rock. It’s her senior year and we’re going to miss her,” Yorkville coach Julie Renda said.

“Grind Fest is on a sport pattern, which is an oil pattern that they see in colleges so that’s why it’s called Grind Fest – the girls really have to work for it. It’s a very difficult oil pattern, but it prepares the girls for what they’ll see in college. The scores were a little lower, even out of our top bowlers, but still to place second, I was very, very happy and very proud of them.”

On Tuesday, Yorkville continued its momentum with a win over Kaneland, 3,451-2,119 behind an 806 series from Jaros.

Now, Yorkville looks ahead to meets with Sycamore and DeKalb before tournaments by Rockford East and Plainfield South close the month.

“We see the best of the best in Rockford, so we always enjoy bowling there to see if we step up our game with the competition,” Renda said.

“When we start off on such a high note, it motivates them to work on those spares. It’s a great group of girls and they try really hard.”

Morris comes through for Foxes Squad drops conference opener

By EDDIE CARIFIO ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Yorkville wrestling coach Jake Oster gave Ryan Morris a simple mission – get four takedowns before going for a pin.

When Morris’ turn in the rotation came up in dual against DeKalb on Thursday, the heavyweight stuck to the plan.

Morris got his four takedowns then recorded his pin – the only pin of the night for the Foxes in a 41-24 loss to the Barbs in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East opener for both teams.

“I told him before the match to work on some takedowns.

We got to get four takedowns before we can go for the pin,” Oster said. “He went out, got four takedowns, and got the pin. So he did what I asked him to do.”

At that point, Morris’ pin cut the DeKalb lead to 29-21.

But the Barbs (2-0, 1-0) responded with a pin in the next match to secure the win over the Foxes (0-3, 0-1).

The Foxes fell down 20-0 after the first four battles of the night. At 132 pounds, Austin Johnson of DeKalb turned a scoreless match against Austin Collins into a 17-1 tech fall thanks to 14 points in the second period, all on nearfalls.

At 138, Cale Reeder had a 2-0 lead after two periods but was pinned by Jakob Norman.

comes down. If you keep giving up bonus points... I thought we lost a couple matches we could have won, but got pinned at the end of periods or giving up points at the end of periods. You’re not going to win a lot of duel meets like that.”

Brady Fisher picked up a 16-1 tech fall at 193 as the Foxes started to eat into a 29-7 DeKalb lead.

“They got the momentum and they kept it going,” Oster said. “We tried to get it back at the end of the duel, but it was a little too late for that. I think if we wrestle again it’s a little closer than 41-24.”

On paper, a meeting between two of the area’s top girls basketball teams should have been a competitive game on the hardwood.

In reality, Yorkville (6-1) staged an 18-0 lead against Plano (5-2) and cruised to a 7515 victory over the Reapers on Saturday night.

Plano was without its top two scorers, as sisters Makayli Vann and Makenzie Vann were out of state for a family wedding.

“I was hoping it was really just a ploy on Plano’s part and that they were actually going to be here, but we knew ahead of time,” Yorkville coach Kim Wentsis said. “They really add a lot that team and without them it was tough for them.”

“Most of our offense runs through those two. Makenzie has been our point guard all year and Makayli is such a scoring threat,” Plano coach Greg Gould said. “When you have playmakers like that, it allows other girls to get open because defense puts so much focus on them. I don’t want to dwell on who’s not here. Our kids played hard, and I’m as proud of them as I’ve ever been.

“It’s not easy when you’re losing and it’s not easy when nothing seems to be going right, to continue to play hard. Our girls played 84 feet of defense the whole time, and that’s all you can ask.”

Lindsay Harrison (14 points) and Jasmine Bracero (14 points) helped get Yorkville out to a fast start as both scored seven points in the opening quarter. Bracero’s three-pointer pushed Yorkville’s lead to 18-0 before Plano’s Bradi Gann put the Reapers on the scoreboard at the 2:14 mark.

through the next two periods.

The Foxes stretched their lead to 29-2 as Katie Nolan and Lily Guerra opened the second quarter scoring, and Yorkville built a 47-13 halftime lead.

“In the first half, we were trying to give a lot of people a bunch of minutes, and in the second half we tried to switch things up because you never know down the line when someone is going to get in foul trouble and we’ll have different lineups,” Wentsis said.

Plano opted for a running clock in the second half, did not score in the third quarter and added two more points in the fourth period to close the night.

“Give the credit to Yorkville; they’re probably one of the top 20 teams in the state right now. They knocked off West Aurora and beat Kaneland easily in the last week,” Gould said.

Reapers hit eight 3-pointers to knock off Yorkville

Nothing could compare to the thrilling sophomore boys basketball game that took four overtime periods to settle, but the varsity boys game between Yorkville and visiting Plano had its moments.

The Reapers (2-0) withstood a third-quarter run by the Foxes (2-4) which tied the game at 34, but Plano closed out the period on an 8-2 stretch to build momentum toward a 57-52 victory on Saturday afternoon.

“It felt like we were in control, even when they came back and tied it. We took a deep breath and got back to doing what we’re doing,” Plano coach Kyle Kee said. “I really see us developing a confident team. It’s nice to see a bunch of seniors out there play like seniors.”

Although Yorkville established an early 4-2 lead off a pair of baskets by Austin Avery, the Foxes fell behind 7-5 and trailed for the remainder of the night.

Plano’s Anthony Martinez and Nathan Shead hit a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter to give the Reapers momentum on the way to a 16-7 lead.

“In the first quarter when we gave up 16 right off the bat, we were digging ourselves a hole,” Yorkville coach Mike Dunn said. “We’re giving up long threes.”

Ethan Kee opened the second quarter with his own long-range shot – Plano’s fourth of the game – to start the second quarter and extend the Reapers’ lead, 19-7.

Will Benson knocked in four points for Plano as the Reapers showed a diverse offense with seven different players reaching the scoring column, and Shead (13 points) knocked in a total of three 3-pointers in the second period.

Yorkville’s Logan Habada (12 points) stepped up for the Foxes and hit a pair of 3-pointers and two free throws, and Javell Moore broke out late in the second quarter to score six points and bring Yorkville within three, 26-23.

Plano went into halftime holding a five-point lead after Israel Adeoti found Maisonet (19 points) inside for a successful layup.

Back-to-back baskets from Moore (20 points) helped Yorkville tie the game with 2:54 remaining in the third quarter, but following a Plano timeout, the Reapers got to work.
